Jesse Eisenberg and Jeff Bridges chat MINIONS & MONSTERS — Jul 2, 2026 — starts at 0:00
As a host of this show and someone who's on the internet quite extensively with video content, it's been important to me over the years to start looking better and making sure my fashion's up to speed. and Quince has been a great partner in helping that They sent us a bunch of great clothes and I got to say One of my favorite pieces I've gotten this entire year just in general Is this incredible Denim jacket that I love to rock and go denim on denim Cowboy Tuxedo. It's one hundred percent cotton and it's ridiculously comfortable. I can speak on behalf of Anthony who loves linen. I tell them all the time. All you wear is linen. You're always on a vacation in Europe, even if you're in LA. and Quintince is one hundred percent European linen pants and shirts are incredibly breathable. He loves them so much. He's literally wearing them right now on his amazing Eur old trip that he's been on And Quint has so much to offer that two guys with totally different styles can find plenty of options for wardrobe and clothing Their tees are also soft enough to literally live in all day And somehow everything at Quince is literally fifty to eighty percent cheaper than similar brands They work directly with ethical factories and cut out the middlemen so you're paying for exceptional quality, not the brand markup Make your summer wardrobe easier. High school was harder. From the world of legally blonde, watch Al, a new original series only on Prime videoide. Watch now. How did you get George Lucas involved in his fun, hilarious cameo on this movie? It was't me, was a producer, because it's Hollywood, you know Do you guys remember your first movie theater experience? I remember seeing Forest Gum very specifically. We wanted to go as a family and my sister was two years old, but we decided to go anyway and just I was kind of asked to like she'll sit on my lap and kind of be quiet. thinkink I was watching it feeling like an adult So I was watching it with a more sophisticated because I was holding a kid. And so I felt like, o I'm watch this, I'm with the parents. It's like, when you finally leave the kids table at a barbecue, that's it. And then suddenly the food is richer. Time's up, let's flipem. Let's show the camera. The eyelash That's great, That's great stuff.. M potatoy, but I like it. It's nice I was very shy in. I'm just gonna to do a little one. I know what you're thinking. Why is Raiders of the Lost Podcast covering a minions movie? I've never even seen a minions movie until Minions and Monsters, but guys I'm telling you This movie was outstanding. It was basically Babylon with minions. It's about filmmaking. The minions are set in the nineteen twenties at first they're trying to find their new villain to follow. But then it's about making movies and minions making a monster movie. and I had such a delightful. Its much fun. It's ridiculous and that's the voice of Sarah Hello in the background, who's going to help break this down with me because man, I'm shocked. We also have amazing interviews with the cast in this episode. We have Jesse Isisenberg, Zoe Deutsch, Jeff Bridges, Allison Janny, Bobby Moynahan and the director Pier Kofffin. There's two Oscars in there and Emmy. it's like the talent in this movie was absurd. Yeah. plus Tay Parker from South Park Voices the kind of villain in this movie in. This movie, Sarah. We went to their press screeting last week. Like within two minutes, we were losing our mind. It was so freaking. I can't believe. I've never seen a minions movie. I've seen desespicable M Yeah.. I've never seen an actual minions movie. And I think they're funny and they're cute. I get how popular they are. The boys and the kids go to the theaters with bananas and they have a really good time Guys, this is like a genuinely a really, really great film, especially people who love filmmaking. it felt so nostalgic too moovies like like Babylon or movies about filmmaking, even like Daster As, but movies I like movies that have the backdrop of making a movie at the same time. And this really captures that so well. What's unique about this mininions movie is new minion characters. They're not the other minions who I think I've been in all of them. Original characters and the humor I swear this movie was geared more towards adults than kids. It's got a lot of dark jokes. I think that they did a really good job of gearing towards both. Be there was a lot of stuff that was for the kids for sure. But then like the adults could have a great time. I don't think you and I stopp laughing for more than a minute possible. There are some jokes that Within five minutes of the movie They were so funny and so far out there in terms of like the mature rating that there were gasps in the crowd. I remember screaming like o my f like a joke within five minutes of a minions movie. But overall, this film's great quick synopsis It showcases minions who They've been around forever since like the Earths existed and they're always you an official one? Okay.. And they're always trying to find their next villain, their next master to follow, whether it's an evil wizard or giant cyclops, but they're trying to find their next boss because minions love nothing more than to serve a villain However, there are a couple of minions that have bigger dreams than just serving a villain. There's this minion named James, who I believe was modeled after me. whose dream is to tell stories and make movies and he's the lone Wolf, he's kind of an outcast amongst the other minions. They all look down on him because he's always inside of his books. He's always drawing photos. He's always telling stories And eventually the minions after a lot of mishaps of trying to serve other masters which go horribly wrong in very funny ways They stumble upon Hollywood Land and they stumble upon a director in filmmaking. The director is voiced by Christoph Faultz, which is crazy. There's two o Oscars right there. Yeah And They start making movies and they become these world famous silent film stars, which is hysterical. And the movie has so many references, whether it's Casab Blanca or Charlie Chaplin films, Buster Keene movies. movie Citizen Kane did E Oh my gosh. I stop I lost count of how many movie references are in this actual film. George Lucas has a cameo G Lucas is in the movie. That was His camo was hilarious. said camo Yes. Sam. George Lucas is this movie, because he's a big fan of the minions. It's hilarious. I asked the director, Pier Coffin about getting George Lucas involved and he told a very funny story. If you listen to the rest of the episode, we'll get to the interview with Pier Coffin and he'll break down how he got George Lucas involved in the film to voice I won't spoil who he's playing But he has a very funny role in this Mions movie and it's very camp But overall, hundreds and hundreds of movie references that almost all of you will get. you'll get almost every single one. plus the rest of the voice cast is great. I mean Pier Koufin, the director voices every single minion, which was so impressive. Yeah. And he talked about how Mostly he does all the voices, but then they alter them with some effects here and there. They change they change the octave, they change the little effects to make them all sound a little different different A little different and a little unique, but also in addition to Jeff Bridges who plays two characters in this movie, he's sort of a good cop, bad cop of studio executives. So good. He's great Jesse Eisenberg. is amazing this movie. He plays an alien robot alien robot named Dort. Yes. veryer funny voice. He talked about the inspiration behind that voice in our interview which we'll get to in just a minute who was inspired by A comedian friend of his took his voice to create Dort Zoe Deutche is in this film as well. They have a great collaboration history. They were in Zombie land two double taap together. and she's just a scene steer in that movie. But she's great in this movie. as well as Alsin Janni. Alsin Janny iss an oscar winner. She's born in Boston kid. I believe she grew up in the Midwest But she is terrific. She's more of the narrator of the movie in a lot of ways. Y. So she brings that tone in the strong creative force behind the events that are going on Christopher Alaltts again we didn' get to talk to him unfortunately, but he plays a movie director in this movie expertly. It's sort of like a blend of Scorsese and Spielberg. That was a good way to put it. Yeah. And then Jeff Bobby Boynahan, he plays a really funny monster and Bobby's great, just a legend from SNL for so many years on that show seeping into movies He was super fun to talk to. He was a delight to talk to. So they were all delight to. Jeff Bridges is exactly who I expected it to be. He was wearing sandals. He was like Yeahah man of the dude. Oh we're gonna draw photos. Let's go. Hey, man, how are you He actually took our whiteboard and kept it, which was very funny. We played a game where we gave them all a whiteboard we made them all draw themselves as minions. And Jeff kept the board. Hilarious. Can I keep this min? We're like yeah. I mean you're Jeff I don't get to keep this. I'm not say no to Jeff Bridges. Yeah. How can you say no to? That was a lot of fun as well as who else was in the cast then I'm not Oh, Trey Parker. Yes. he wasn't at the junket, but Trey Parker, one of the creators and voice artists and an and everything for South Park Ky voices This little green dude right here. What's his name again Goomy, Goomy. who is a very sinister character Yes. So yeah, we've got little Goomy there and then I've also fun little game for you guys listening. I've also hidden F other minions on the set. So if you can find them call them out in the comments. Good. I don't know where they all. I was likem like, where are they? I'm like, you can probably f one over there. you're like there is one over there. Oh I don't even see it. But again, like I don't We don't cover animated movies that often. I still like animated movies. I see as many as I can, but I've never seen a minions movie, Sarah And I've just seen the one desespicable me the first one. It was so. I was floored. It was so funny. Lots of emotion too And then it turns into this big Monster movie reference of like the blob And Frankenstein and all these great monster movies are just like thrown in there. The mummy, It's such a delight. I do I do have to take credit for this because I did push you to see this and you were Yeah, because you were on the fence a bit like, oh, I don't know if we should do this and, But I had a feeling it was going to be good because I knew it was about movie making And so yeah, well this is not well this is not the typical thing that you guys would think of raaiders to cover, I think it's just so up your alley too. Yeah. and the cast is amazing. And how they coveres and M movie making was just so funny. It was an absolute blast and set in the twenties so it is literally Babylon except mininions, and I can't recommend it more. So let's get into some interviews First up we're going to do the Jesse Eisenberg oe Deutsch. We' got about ten minutes with them. tons of great nuggets of information from the film and their careers. So Listen up, stay tuned right now and we're going to get into our interview with Jesse and Zoe from Minions and Monsters All right, let's show the cameras. Yeah. awwful. Are youready yours is square. Mine has curly hair. Yeahah. You got it. Amazing job, guys. Mine looks like a rabbi. All right, so don't worry about erasing them or anything.geob That's it for darwing. What do you think about mine? Yours is the best one, but not by a lot Well, thank you for humoring us guys. Now Jesse, ye, as the robot Dort a very intentionally deceptive character. Yes. For the voice and tone, do you take any influence from Android cyborgs from the past? Obviously Gort possibly, but C three PO, maybe health nine thousand? I took inspiration from a comedian friend of m named Mike O'Connell, who is a genius comedian from Chicago. and when I met Mike He sounded exactly like Dortart. And I remember about two days after meeting, I was like, wait, are you English? Are you British? And he was like, No, of course not. Of course, I'm not British. And I was like, Ohh, what is that? And he was like, It's a voice I do all the time like a Mid Atlantic. Just Yes, it' like this mid Alantic thing, likeike he would learn in acting school in the sixties. Do you fare against a similar attack? Tiny insurgent Hey! Y you , no, you can't kick that kid! He must be taught a lesson. And it was just I knew exactly how this guy should sound and I should have called Mike and asked, Hey, can I steal your voice? But I didt finding out right now. What that? Isas he finding out That's the voice no? This is yes, exactly. Yeah. like the nicest man you could meet and I'm sure he'd be very happy. Zoe, was Debbie inspired by any specific film characters or real life character or person No, No, not necessarily. I didn't to be honest, it was a wonderful and kind of intimidating challenge just it felt like a little bit like a cold read, which is like when you go into an audition you don't get the sides, have to you read them right there and say them right in front of them. I didn't know much about it or what it was They were they just encouraged me to use my real voice a little bit more heightened and a little bit maybe a little higher. I did pitch a Minnesotan accent. That was Good Minnesotan accent. Sh we get you get a glimpse of it or no? Oh yeah, don't yall know? Oh Oh my God. All right, well I did ask them. I said, you want a Minnesotan? And they said, no, but no problem. It's all good 're good. Thank you,. I really I love it. I love it. Anytime somebody does a good accent, you're like, e's.'t know. I don't know it's good but it obviously wasn't good enough. That's what I'll say. Well, it's fantastic. and the movie' outstanding. and's such a great celebration for filmmaking and cinema of the past. They traveled every kind of genre, so many references, do you guys have any favorite homages or references in the film from cinema History Yeah, but I don't know if I'm right about this, but when I saw the movie, again, not knowing a lot about it, because I only knew my scenes and I wasn't in this particular scene. But there's this amazing train sequence, of course, which is obviously a throwback to those kind of those westerns. But the train coming right at the audience is what I always remembered from, you hearing the original movie, right? Exactly where the audience in the You know like I was probably a hundred years ago jumped out of the way because I thought the train was going hit them they'd never seen that kind of experience before. And so I was watching that just going, God, this is just so endlessly clever. And my kid who I was watching it with didn't get the reference, but loved it for its own you know, on its own terms. What about you? Any Hj's references? Gosh, I've only seen the movie once and I can't wait to see it again tomorrow Quite frankly, blown away by how many there are, I how the thing that touched me the most is that I could feel the director's love and passion for cinema in like a true cineophile and that he had this opportunity and this trust from the studio to kind of do this version of the movie It's miraculous and inspired and like experimental and filled with references. So I don't have one particular one, just a general respect and admiration. Lo it. Do you guys have any characters in your career from the past that you would have loved to see in this movie or in a minions' version of You have so many like iconic Characters Sure, where to start, you know, Well, I did another animated movie where I played a bird who could fly from Minnesota. I never picked in a Minnesota accent because I wouldn't be able to follow through on it. But that would be adorable. Minnesotan animated Animated characters in Minnesota. I think yeah, what is it? Wh? I think they're just They're just lovely lovely people L Western sweetness. Yes. They really are lovely people It'd be sweet to see that character, a bird, a macaw, an endangered macaw in minions's land. I think the bird would get stepped on in five seconds, you know. Any for you, oe, from your career? I'm here with you, so I'm gonna say the character I did in Zombieand too. Genius. How was the chemistry like coming off that movie then bringing it to hear you guys recording together at all? get I record it all together, but I was just so we did. I think it would haveve been so funny. Did' you think would have been nice? It would' have been great. You record these in total isolation. Yeah, but I had the knowing that the spirit of Jesie was on the other side had a photo of was very exciting to me because I just a very strong spirit. You have a very strong spirit.ate it is Is there something you guys enjoyed about voice acting versus live action? Depends on the actor. you know, some actors you want to do voice acting with. But no she I mean she's so modest about this movie, but Zombie Land was two, double tap. She plays one of the great performances I've ever seen live. It's pretty fun. It's such a genius rendering. Her improvs were brilliant. We were all crying the whole cast and we all thought we were like hotshots because it was our sequel You know, And we were just every day going, oh my Godd. And so like so I forgot what even the question was, but I lik what I talked about instead Yeah. She stole every scene from you guys bab. She did. abbsolutely.utely. the crack character transformation just like's beh the scenes writing everything Of course, of course. Really were. And I did a lot of the lighting too, but again, she was just great So this movie made me feel so muchost nostalgia for movies from the past movies I loved. Do you guys remember your first movie theater experience? God theaters For one that was like a big impact. I do remember seeing please yes, please. No, please please, please But you know m, because I just did it.. Oh I remember seeing Forerest Gum very specifically because we wanted to go as a family and my sister was two years old, but we decided to go anyway and just I was kind of asked to let she' sit on my lap and kind of be quiet. But I remember thinking the movie was so amazing. I actually just recalling now, I think I was watching it feeleling like an adult. So I was watching it with a more sophisticated palete because I was holding a kid. And so I felt like, oh, I'm watching this. I'm with the parents. And maybe I appreciated it in that way even more. It's like when you finally leave the kids table at a barbecue, that's it. And then suddenly the food is richer. That's really sweet. What about you Zoe? Do you remember? I was honestly for the first time in my life listening. So I wasn't thinking about next. I think you were reacting Unfortunately, it is a foreign feeling. I think you enjoyed Anchoran. You enjoyed Anchor Man many times. Yeah But that wasn't the first. I know, but I was kind of just opening up for. Maybe spice W. Spice worldld anger. Right don't know Spice workor? What? Was Spicewor for kids? No. No, okay. I mean, it was like PG, right? Was it? But I was the second kid, so I was seeing like horror movies and Everything that I shouldn't be seeing at a young age, which explains a lot. Same for me. You two My brothers and it's just like five Are you the youngest of five? Tied for the youngest I have a twin. and so I grew up like sneaking downstairs to watch everything with them. so strong plete. Y,ong p.s being the youngest that's wow. My mom was not expecting that No plann at all, so but hey, I'm here, which is great. One final quick one. What's the best part of working on a minions' movie in with Pierre Oh my gosh, what's the best part of working with? Just knowing that your director is a more talented voice actor than you is very odd. You know, because you think you're coming in and you're the actor and everything. And then you find out, which I didn't know, that you didn't know that? I did not know that. Oh my God, that he does every minion's voice. Yeah. You're like, o, those are so much more. So, doesn't that make sense because how do you explain that? That's true you as the visionary as the creed. He's such a timid, sweet, apologetic man at all time.' okay if we do one more time? I would do one hundred tes. I'm such a freak when I'm around him. I'm like, close I have like touttees. I'm like close to asking him like to do it. You know, I'm like, can you do it? and then I stop myself. Does he can he actually do those voices? I think he can. I know I think they filter it somehow speed it up a little I think he can I think he can do it. He must be very good. You you ask for me, please. Yes I gotta last you. I have no shame in that. Okay. So we're gonna ask him. I'm gonna ask him too. I'm curious. Yeah. I just wan to hear him speak minionese. Yeah once. All right, I'm done with my time. Thanks so much for chatting. It's my pleasure. Thank you so much. Oh, look at that. That's great. Mines in monsters July the d twenty twenty six All right, welcome back to the show. Did you enjoy that interview? That was a fun one. So nice and delightful. Both of them very sweet, articulate and really passionate about cinema. and they seem like they just had so much fun on this movie. They were so smiley and excited. Even that junks, you never know what you're going to get from the actor. Sometimes it's like, oh, they've been traveling a lot. They're a little tired, maybe a little grumpies. You never know, but Jesie and Zoe were locked in. they were very funny, very gracious with their time. And Jesse's new film the debut, which dropped a trailer the other day looks fantastic. and so I was happy to talk with him before that movie comes out because I've been a fan of Justseie's for a long time Yeah Zoe was great. and I've only seen her in double tap Zombie Land, but Jesse, I mean, It's been Lex Luther, social network American ultra. He's in so many fun movies and great films. And he's a great actor and a great director. He's a great director. Multi talented. Yeah, I still can't believe sometimes how he didn't win for social Network. I cant remember who he was up against for an Oscar. So social Network that would have been two thousand nine or ten, I believe Yeah, he's a terrific performer and such a great actor. But his voice was so fun as Dort, this cyborg alien robot who's sort of intentionally vague and ambiguous about his intentions. Yeah. We got to be careful here because we don't want to spoil in exactly because was that was such a good part of the movie. The movie' very mysterious about Dort's origins and very misleading about his intentions in a very funny and camp way. Oh, he was it was twenty eleven. He was up against Colin Firth who won for the King speech. Javier Bardem, Jeffid He was up against Jeff Bridges for true grit. Wow. James Franco for one hundred twenty seven hours then He himself Justse Assenberg. for movies. Colin Furth running for the King's speech was like everyone was surprised but he's amazing in it But I was surprised that Jesse didn't win for Social Network Yeah because in terms of you can't always just cherry pick years of the Osh because it'd be like, no one remembers this movie, but they remember that movie of the actor who lost. No one remembers the Kings speech. No one watches the King spepeech again. It's a great movie, but it's like a one and done kind of film It's terrific. so, but it's never like higher rewatch value for me, at don't Yeah. I social network. I've seen the movie like ten times, twelve times. I can't believe true grit didn't Jeff Bridges didn't win. He's great in that movie too. It was a competitive year for sure. That was, yeah. But it was a blast to talk to them. So let's gear up another interview. and why don't we do our most chaotic one? Oh man. It was where we got four minutes with three Three people. whichich was pretty tough to get a sound bite out of. We had Jeff Bridges, Allison Janny, and Bobby Moynahan all at the same time For four minutes for this junket And it was a bit chaotic, but that made it very fun. I had I had a blast and this is when you watch for Jeff Bridges decides and as Y us if you could keep the whiteboard. And we had an exchange where we got to take a photo of him holding it. So enjoy this interview with the three of them I'd love to do a drawing contest to start off. Perfect. we're gonna give you guys thirty seconds to draw yourself as a minion and see who does the best job. Oh boy go thirty seconds starting now. But Overall, the film's amazing as I love the love letters, cinema hilarious performances. We have a narrator character with Allison here. Jeff you're hilarious and Bobby Always bringing so much magic, I love it. Thank you. You're welcome. It's hard to concentrate and draw m. You guys do your. do your thing. gosh. I'm so curious who's gonna win? Time's up, let's flipem. Let's show the camera. The eyash. That's great, That's great stuff. Oh my God. M potatoy, but I like it. It's nice. I was very shy Im just gonnaa do a little one. Now this movie, it's such an incredible love letter to cinema. Did you have any favorite references in the movie or genre references in the film specifically I love just when they're like walking around the back lotots, like I don't know. there's something about the back lotots of those know studios and stuff that it's very you feel romanticized, but for me it was like, I don't know if you guys do this, but Peeewe's big adventure when he's just going through the back of the backlots and all that stuff and there's all this crazy stuff happening. like that's what I assumed is always going on in those Hollywood backlots. So like seeing that in the movie and just going like, P part of this crazy thing that's still going on now. having my kids see that and kind of being interested in the movie business now It's just insane that it's still going. Love it. Any references or homages for you guys there were favorites in the movie?, I know there were Casablanco ones, I love them not. Buster Keaton. That' that was the one I I s. just pass it from your own m. Which one the How The clock hang too. No.. What kind of thing. What a master he was. That was my favorite Like I made a little drawing of him. But yeah, I mean, God, Buster Keaton, man These is the best. And then one quick last one, if you could have one of your characters from your careers appear in a minions movie like this, what character would you pick? Would we pick some of Jeff's characters? I mean, the dude, obviously the dude. Yeah, An dude needs to be a minion. The dude. I don't think a lot of my characters would fare wellell. I don'tiverse Mine would Maybe Loretta from Drop Dead Gorgeous or something like that. Wow. That's a deep thing. I would go with Starman. I. Okay. I would likek to see it. And then did you guys have any input on your character designs at all or creature designs? No. None. No, but I love it. Yeah. That's my favorite part of his job is when they send you a picture of You go in your bathroom and start talking to ide All right guys, thank you so much for the time. loveove the movies... Nice hanging man. Oh look turtle man.. He's turtle That was that was chaos. Yeah, but so fun. It was fun. It's so fun to think that Jeff Bridges kept something that that we gave him. Yeah. But he probably gave it to his like I'm sure he didn't take it home. Yeah. He probably just they probably just kept it. I can't wait to see everybody else's interviews come out because he probably just kept it for the rest of the interviews and was like doodling while he got bored or something. I feel bad for the other interviewes now. because there's no way anyone's going to ask Jeff Bridges. canan we take that away from you? dont you don't do that Yeah Jeff Bridges. Jeff Bridges does what he wants But it was a lot of fun. Allison She's such a talented performer as well. And And Boby, I can't wait to see what he does with the rest of his career. He's a great voice actor too with this film. He had a ton of fun obviously. But we have one interview left and that is with the director, Pierre Koufin, who also co wrote the film. Now Pierre is a very special talent because in addition to directing and writing, he voices every single minion in the film Which is nothing short of an incredible feat because there's got to be thirty voiced minions in this movie. they all sound very similar. Okay. and not only that, but also he was speaking in Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Japanese. Like if you listen into what how the minions are talking now, like it's a mix every single language. It's always been a mix of languages Yeah. It's gibberish with English or gibberish with Spanish And it's it's very impressive. But it was cool to hear him talk about his process, what he needs to do to find those voices as well as just great nuggets of information about the film. You know, I was so curious how they got George Lucas in talking about how like yeah One of the producers his friends and texted him and he comes in Paris to a hotel room and we filmed him voice audio for twenty minutes and he was gone. and it's like was that did George Lucas just come here? L he's in and out in twenty minutes doing his voice role We won't spoil what the voice role is, but it it's very funny. It's quick in the film too Real quick, before we get back into the minions, check out this amazing poster over my right shoulder of the last Samurai It's a double sided prints inside this beautiful light boox. bothoth. provide to us by our great friends at movieposters. com. Oh, myself? As a minion. As a minion. w to personalize it. You ready? Yeah Yes.,. And I'll go against you. We'll see who has the best one. Oh. I do not like that. But I love the movie. It was so freaking funny I tri, I tried. I really tried. This time I tried. It's just this one. This is the one. It' a little bit lazy on the other ones, but What second Oh my go,'s going my f H? It's going by fast. Wow Wait w? Waitait. All right, let's reveal it to the cameras. Oh man, I just ruined mine. That's pretty good. I expected it to be good, ye, it's great. Fantastic. I wanted to put glasses on mine, but it doesn't make any sense putting glasses on the goggles. Now don't worry about erasing it. So the film was just so delightful, celebrating cinema in the past, the history of filmmaking. C you talk about using the backdrop of film history as a main motif and storytelling device for the rest of the film For every movie, I need a backdrop just because I need the minions to be I need inspiration for the minions to live. like I need them to create mayhem with lights, with mics, with you know so there is a context It's a little bit like the first minion movie, ourur context was England in the sixties. so I had the music, I had the architecture, I had you know the fashion minions too. I didn't do anything on it, but there was the idea of having kung fu in the seventies in San Francisco. So you know, the backdrop of there. hereere having a central character wanting to make a movie, there was no better place than toplace than to place it in history in Hollywood in the twenties when cinema became this sort of a big industry when all these people were fleeing Nazi Germany and then coming over to create big studios in Los Angeles or become famous directors, Fritz Lang, Michael Curtis, Billy Wilder And so on. So there there was a lot of texture to be and substance to be you know to help the minions sort of live their adventure in there. Because when you look at the story of the minions in this movie, it's really simple. It's about friendship and it's about one being super passionate about what he does. and then because of his passion, his friendship goes like to help. then But then you know friendship you know they become friends again and in the process of re beccoming friends, they save the earth and the universe. So you know so there's this big ridiculousness around that core idea of just friendship. There's so many genres explored. You're traversing everything, monsters, western, science fiction, and so many references to characters and actors of the past, Buster Keat and Charlie Chaplin. Do you have a favorite reference specifically? Obviously there's like a hundred in the movie. Is there one though that's like this is my number one reference that I put in the film? I'd like Citizen Kane because it's sure. It's just ridiculous The movie itself, you know is when you look at it now without having the keys to understand why it became a classic, then it's just some guy dying saying a word, rosebud and then you know a journalist searching like, what is the meaning of that word? And having a mininion just say, oh poop instead of It's so funny. I know. And I think it's stupid because I think as a kid, you find it funny because there's a character on screen saying, oh poop. But as an adult, having all the references and stuff, maybe, then it becomes funny because you know that yeah, that's not'viously more entertaining for adults. honestly. I had such a blast. withithin the first few secondgs of the film, I was just talking to Jessse and Zoe and we were talking about how you do all the voices for the minions. What's the trick to doing them all? Are there like effects added and just kind of do different A acccentuations on words with different characters? Well, there are two things. One of them is technical, which is I need to perform in slow motion, and I record stuff at a slower frame rate. And when I put it back at the correct frame rate, it speeds up my voice and pitches it. So I need to perform like in slow motion And the hardest thing though is not that, that's a button to push. The hardest thing is just to find the correct melody that will make the sentence that I'm saying with random words understandable, like, o, he's asking a question. Oh, he's not mad. Oh, he's telling a joke that the other guy is not finding funny. All that meaning, that little song is actually where I pull my hair out because sometimes I just can't find, you know, I do stuff, I try and it doesn't work Ultimately, when that doesn't work, since I write the script now, I just rewrite the thing so that it happens elsewhere so that there's a prop that helps me, so that there's maybe a human character that says like, oh, are you saying this? Or another character that understands the meanion, like Gumi magically understands the meanion, where he just repeats what the meanans have been saying all along. So there are tricks But it's horrible and fun at the same time, but it's always daunting. It's like, am I going to manage that? A people are going understand. And I don't know until I th it actually to Pull it off. I can tell you, it's great. Thank you. Powerhouse cast. How did you get George Lucas involved in his fun, hilarious cameo on this movie? It was a me, It was a producer,s because it's Hollywood You know So it's my producer knowing he had the idea of like, oh, maybe we should put George Lucas in that third box. You know, it's a statue statue and then oh, another statue, but no, it's the real George being stuck in there. And yeah, and he knew George and he just You texted him, George said, yes, two weeks later, we're in this very small recording studio in Paris. twenty minutes later, he was gone. It was like surreal. It like that George? Thatorge L, my gosh. That's hilarious. Now, I love the opening sequence and it reminded me of Fororest Gump. You know, you're splicing forest with the old real footage splicing minions with old real footage. Was that inspiration? and what was that process like? Well technically the process today is very easy. I mean, it's just like putting minions and matching grading and stuff, everything. You're talking about all the black and white creds. So the process is sort of easy But we just needed the choice of the vignettes, like going from the Mewbridge horse, which it all started by a bet actually of some rich guy, I think Stanford, the guy from the University, who his obsession was to show to the world that at some point a horse running was not touching the ground anymore. All off the ground, ye. Exactly. So that image slash animation became iconic because Mewbridge came up with a system of actually photographing like a string of cameras, right? totallyah withith strings the horse broke. Yeah And so it's the father of animation, of cinema, of everything. So it made sense that the minions would crash into those images and it made sense also that they would crash into those very iconic train arriving at Dyoda from the brother Lumers. and the Melias thing also, you know. Have you always wanted to explore the origins of the overalls No, because we've done it before. Like we were doing it I think in the first minions, they were arriving in New York and then seeing those things dangling. and then that's how they would dress up with overalls. I don't think we're doing it in the second minion. And this one, I mean, was you know it just came about like, oh, maybe there Maybe they' you know, they're becoming fashion victims and maybe fashion. Yeah Theres janor over there and say like, o, we want that stuff. One more question. I love the universal logos in the opening. Every movie, whenever they experiment, it's always a blast, but you did like fifteen, like all the way to the past. It was the process like getting all and is it easy to get approval for all? I mean, I markcked it up because I had, you know so I marked it up I pulled it into Da Vinci. And just like did it myself. In the end didn but I pulled them off YouTube, I think. So amazing. And then we asked obviously Universal to have all the correct footage and to do it. But you know, it was fairly easy. Once you have the idea, you just like do it yourself. Yeah. Well, the movie was hilarious. It made me feel pain stepping on Legos too, just like so many fun references, so many great jokes. I was just blown away as I was saying, Thankk you so much for the time, and congratulations on the film. No, thank you, Thankk you so much But overall, it was great to talk to him.'s a very p. It's so funny to like having met him and talking to him, it's so funny to think that this was the guy that was sitting in a voice booth going about Phil. Yeah, movie stars. Poop. The amount of times they say poop. They do. I mean, they make a great Casablanca joke about poop like Pierre has made. No No, that was that wasn't Casablanca. That was what was Citizen Kane? Citizen Kane, sorry, Rosebud, poop was a Rosebud. Yeah. But this movie, that's kind of not really a spoiler because there's a hundred of these movie references where they're putting the minions and basically what they're doing is making it seem like the minions were a part of all these great films. The minions were in Citizen Kane, The minions were in Casablanca The minions were Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton and all these great char They didn't know. they had a sequence where they ran past all those guys. that was super fun to see all those old bits happening. Yeah. So it was so fun to explore revisionist history. You know, a lot of great directors do this often, you know, Tarantinos It's kind of as bread and butter revisionist history mixed with Westerns, but I loved going back in this Babylon era of golden times of Hollywood, but also a great nod to what happened in the past of going from Silent film to talkies and how so many actors kind of lost their careers because of it. once you know Mary Pickford, you hear her voice for the first time. her career starts to plummet. The ticket sales go down. Not everyone could convert from silent film to talkies like someone like Charlie Chaplin could. And it was great to kind of juxtapose that with the minions and how the minions It's great. It's not really a spoiler, but like they're great sound the film stars. But once the talkies come out and they introduce sound, it's like, a and everyone' What the fuck are they saying? Yeah. obviously. It's very funny.. It's very c. Speaking of let me see this thing. So this is what a fk gun? Yeah. put that to the mike It's pretty funny. Is it supposed to shoot out? Yeah, here, let me see if see it work. Well I mean you don't have to get the Fark gun to work. I mean we're in a closed environment right now. so it wouldn't be the It wouldn't be the worst thing the world if it didn't work. Let just see here. How's it worked? Do you charge it up? Yeah, it's gott to charge up. So maybe let's roll the next interview and well Well we're out of interviews We've done. We did it. We did all three. Oh my goodness. Yeah we're out of inter. Wow. Where was I? You weren't paying attention. You were too focused on the fart gun. I guess I was. But guys I wouldn't do an episode on this if I didn't think the film was great. Yeah, seriously, hear us out. Just give it a shot. It's genuinely outstanding. I was I had such a blast
