I gotta say, I think this week has the most trailers releaseed than I've had I've seen in recent memory. We, We have trailers and we'll break all these down. Trailers four How to rob a bank Fall to deadpoint Lucky, Evil Dead Burn, the invite by any means ice cream man Onslaught and Avatar the Last Airbender, an insane amount of major release trailers. so we'll break all those down on this episode, but James, take it away with the still extremely healthy summer Bock box office. It's a very healthy box office in a specific way because we're seeing big blockbusters IP driven movies really takeaking the back seat Except for Scary Movie six, which had a huge juggernaut opening weekend. How much How much money does this movie costs to make? thirty million dollars budget. fifty six million opening weekend, Domestic. It's already green. Domestic, That's absurd for Scary Movie six. I'm seeing it tomorrow. I cannot wait to check it out. one hundred million dollars global opening, so it's already way in the green making a lot of money for Paramount. and I got to say The reviews are so absurdly critical. It's a scary movie. I know I keeping. I know you told me it was great. Yeah, I love the scary movies. They're not supposed to be refined cinema guys. Yeah These are This is a hilarious movie. It's irreverent. It's ridiculous and it's made that way. You're not watching this movie for a good story. I see people complaining about the story. I'm like, it's scography iss not great. You guys do this is a scary movie. This is just to sit back, relax and have some fun And they knocked out the park. I think you're going to love it. I think anybody who loves the scary movies. will enjoy this film proud I saw with We were laughing our asses off. and I think this is really millennial centric It's a movie made for us and I it's a blast. If you want to just laugh your ass off, go see Scary Mvie. Huge, huge opening weekend that's abcurertain. You know they're going to green lightight seven right now. They probably green light it today. And I guarantee you that comes out in twenty twenty seven and it's going to be obsession in backrooms focus. Well, Scary Movie doubled the box office of the next new release Jam. Practically, masters of the Universe from Amazon Big expensive movie, two hundred million dollars production budget plus the marketing campaign was massive as well. So you could probably estimate three hundred, three hundred fifty million dollars spent on this movie to make and then market only pulled in twenty nine million dollars in its opening weekend at the domestic box office globally matched Scary mooies's domestic total at fifty six million do basically Yeah. So that was a huge Huge underperformer for Amazon. Yes, there's a lot of competition in the theaters as well. mayaybe we'll have better word of mouth because we're seeing backrooms and obsession have ridiculous legs this year. But at the end of the day, this is a movie that really needed to hit somewhere around seventy five million opening weekend domestic. Yeah, ultimately, you know, they I think they spent too much money on this film. It's an IP that, you know, it's It's not a guaranteed hit to all these eighties nostalgia IPs and They should have gone with a much more modest scale to see how it did So to spend two hundred million on this, I think was way too much way too risky. If they did a hundred million dollars movie it did pretty well. thenen okay, a sequel maybe two hundred million, but it spent way too much on this. So because the need to break even is so high, you have to make five hundred million. And Masters it was a pretty good movie. You know, for a two hundred million dollar IP engine starter, reinvigorator for a beloved toy and TV show from the eighties I think it could have been better. I think what was shocking about Masters of the Universe was Jared Letto was hands down the best part of Masters of the Universe. His performance is Skeletor is iconic. It's one of my favorite vocal performances I've seen in a film. It's sort of like a Shakespearean bane. It's very funny, very camp. The voice he came up with, what he was doing with his with his accent was incredible. And the marketing really didn't do that justice in terms of letting people know that, you know, Jired L was in this movie, but also If they teased Skeletor more in the marketing sooner on personality and the charisma that that character brought to that film, I think would have done a lot better. People would have been more excited to see it. It's kind of like the last dual marketing not showing Ben Affleck's performance in that film. Exactly how colorful it was. Exactly the same. And ifatour is outstanding. Objectively, if I'm putting myself in the perspective of a you know, a young person who's never heard of masters I wouldn't even know who the villain of the movie is because they showed two shots of him. Sure yeah. And you're like, wait, mostly just fighting. Yeah, whoo is this guy? What exactly is the conflict so They released a clip a few days ago showing The humor and the charisma of Skeletor in the film, but it was I think it was a little too little too late. I thought it looked good. I was like, this looks really fun. It's him and Allison Briree like haming it up. Evil Lind. He's like Skeletor is worth the price of admission for this movie. I swear to Also that score fucking ripped. Oh my kill's such a good. absolutely killed it. Backrooms twenty six million dollars in its second Wekend the domestic box offffice, it's already pasted two hundred million dollars, the first A twenty four film to do that globally, which is outstanding Absolutely outstanding. It passed Maro Supreme, which was the previous top earner for eight twenty four at around one hundred ninety one million dollars a global total. It didn't need that giant marketing campaign.idn't need one Yeah. And it did such a great job. We're obviously going to get another one very soon I'm short. And then obsession. Obsession is still Killing. twenty five million dollars in its fourth weekend at the domestic box office. twenty five million do. It's only a seven percent drop from last week. That is crazy. Masters barely beat obsession in its opening weekend and Obsession has been in theaters for four weeks. And it's obsession is absolutely on track to hit two hundred million easily. Oh hundred It'll clear that in two weeks. I'm pretty sure it's gonna is that like once every? They're projecting it'll hit two hundred fifty pretty easy. Yeah It's easily going to hit two hundred like no problem by the end of like next week or middle of next week. There's also Another new release this week. It came out of like for us, I' never even heard of this thing, a new film made twenty two million dollars in the opening weekend. This is the amazing digital circus, the last act So this is a very, very popular YouTube series that has its final two episodes put together as a film and they put it in theaters through Fathom events And this movie made twenty two million dollars at the domestic box office. I never heard of this thing, but fans clearly adore it and they came out to see it. Yeah, it's u it's not horror is it it's sort of I don't know. what it is Yeah. It's anime tragic real world identities of trapped humans and delivers a bearweet heavily It's like a it looks like coraline vibes in a way Either way, I mean, look at this YouTubers What I like about it is it's not a horror film. You know I love the fact that YouTubers are making films and specifically making horror. But I think I'm afraid that content creators are going to get pigeonholed into only making horror films. But I think this is a great example of it doesn't have to be horror You know, they can make any they can make animated mov animated movies and also thrillers comedies success without giant marketing tours because obsession It didn't have a worldwide press tour. And it wasn't until Indy Navaret went on Kimel last the other night Yeah because of the success of the film, like focus We didn't have the money to put out a huge international tour in talk shows. I mean, all the actors went on podcasts like ours if you want to check out our obsession podcast. But since the film is becoming so successful, now they're doing like a press tour in a way. And she was on Kimel the other night promoting the film. It's pretty incredible. It's very smart, but also like you never know what you're going to get lightning in a bottle of that film for sure. And to contrast that Mandalorian and Grogu in its third weekend, mind you, dropped to a paltry nine point five million this past weekend. itss third weekend with a global global box office haul onlyn two hundred fifty six million dollars after three weeks of release around the world. Keep in mind, its budget was two hundred ninety millionars maybe even upwards of three hundred million doars as well. Well, its production budget was one hundred sixty five million. But then when you added marketing, it's two hundred ninety million.. It was a huge marketing campaign And the it shows to it goes to show you that You know, Mark The marketing of this film alone was more than the budget of obsessions backroom Scary movie combined. But the thing is that's fine because it's a Disney Star Wars movie. So they they're going Yeah loobe trotting marketing campaign. L it doesn't Yeah, I'm saying it doesn't mean it's gonna to work It used to. Yeah. But at the end of the day, it shows you that there's something wrong with Star Wars. you know we've all been saying it for a while. Men Ling and Grogu getting Star Wars back in theaters. It's a good thing. Can Star Fighter reignite The fashion the passion that people have for Star Wars again for casual audience members, of course, We're going to always turn out. Star Wars fans are always going to turn out for whatever product there is. But at the end of the day Has Star Wars been damaged so much in the last fifteen years Even a Star Wars movie in theaters has struggled to pull in three hundred million dollars at the box office. It might not even make Th hundred and fifty million It's possible. It might not. It's possible it will finish before hits three hundred fifty million. Possible it won't break three hundred. I mean, it probably will, but that's that's terrifying news You know, is it Too far gone. I think Starfighter will bring it back M it cool again better. Get the quality back there, but obviously there's something wrong with Star Wars. Only the star power of Ryan Gostlin can resuscitate the franchise right now. I think so. They're relying on that. I think so, especially coming off Project Haille Mary and he's the man. He doesn't make any he doesn' make bad movies that man. I would rather watch Project Haail Mary than every day for the rest of my life and watch Mel Lure and Grogu again. I mean, it's fair point. it's that enjoyable of a film. Now let's talk about the Odysy The second time of pres sales for tickets went on for seventy millimMeter in large formats Did you get your tickets? AMC was crashing like crazy, Fandango was crashing, the IMX website was crashing. You could have gone straight to some theaters to get them directly through their websites if they had websites, but seventy millimeter tickets went on sale For showhowtimes going all the way up to the twenty third of July, I believe. Wow. There's also a new seventy millimeter post to releasase, as well as a new Dolby post to release all from the Battle of Odysseus and his men versus the Giants. And did you see the popcorn bucket brilliant popcorn bucket. It's this great The Keeey IMac camera. and a lot of people are confused. why is this the popcorn bucket for the Ozsie? Why is't it the Trojan horse or sword or a helmet? Because this camera was invented for this film specifically is the first camera used for a film. it's the first camera ever used in a movie, but also it's the first film ever shot entirely with IMAax cameras in IMAax film. So this camera was invented for this camera for this movie specifically with David Keey who passed away last year, pioneer in IMAX who helped bring this popular format now to the forefront with Christopher Nolan for Theatrical Film and Narrative feature filmmaking. and I think it's a perfect popcorn bucket. Also very practical. It's a big square. M. Iagine could you have imaginine without Nolan and Keeley the fact that a Giant movie releases promoting its camera for imagery. That's yeah, it's amazing. Now let's talk about David Lach Latest film, the director of The Fall Guy and Bullet Train, new film starring Nicholas Holt's How to Rob A bank finally dropped a trailer. This looks really good. It's about a bunch of young tech savvy social media savvy criminals who go on a string of bank robberies as a way of gettinget back at the corrupt system in our government and in our banking industry And they post online. creating a YouTube channel grows a huge fan base, which I think is really it's a great way to connect How we communicate now online to the classic genre of crimes and cops and robbers and Nicholas Holt leads the crew. opposite them is John C. Rilly and Zoe Krabit who I didn't realize was the comedic pair that we needed because they look great together on screen going off each other. It's a pretty smart concept because Heist movies traditional format. haven't been performing well. You know, you look at Cime on hundred one, which is I will say a pretty okay movie. I was not super impressed with the story. Filmmaking was great, but I just didn't love that film cllassic heist movie id didn't do very well at the box office, Honestly was quite the flop. I don't even think it broke fifty million dollars on a pretty expensive budget But You make a film where you take the classic heist. Get some young blood in there, but also use it in a way with storytelling to communicate with younger audiences Gen Z, Jen Alpha, who are on YouTube constantly. The biggest video platform on the planet, the biggest media platform on Earth is YouTube. So use that to T tell your story. I think it's pretty smart It looks fun It looks like a lot of fun. I love it the cold, so I can' wit to it. Yeah. Supergirl guys, we saw Supergirl the other night. We've seen the film. We cannot legally say Any besides that or else it'll be a red dot right around here somewhere Cite will strangle you. We cannot say anything about the film. I bet you it's the opening scene of the movie it's definitely first act definitely they a team up because they yeah, they do have a team up to fight together Yeah Um, All right or maybe they're getting in an argument. Who knows? We have some news of another remake. This is a little interesting though. We talked about this, I think a couple episodes ago of movie News Escape from New York is getting remade. However Zach Snyder is set to direct this film. now Zack Snyder has a pretty good pedigree, I think when it comes to remakes. I think Dawn of the Dead was a really solid remake. I enjoyed the hell out of that film and obviously that kickstarted his career. So I think that this is a pretty good choice. and now when I first heard of the news of a remake, I was not very excited, but now that Zack Snyder's attached. I'm pretty intrigued by this and he's obviously going to reinvent it. The original version. If you've never seen it, definitely check it out. Kurt Russell Stars and this one of his most iconic roles, John Carpenter directing. nineteen eighty one, it set in a future from then, nineteen ninety seven, where Manhattan had been turned into an island sized maximum security prison, the president of the United States crashed lands into the decaying city with sensitive information that could change the world Former military hero turned outlaw Pliskin is coerced into rescuing the man and has to face gangs, the army and ex associates in order to survive. Coerced is one way to put it a fucking bomb poison thing is put into his neck, so he has like no choice. but I wasn't excited about this news just a couple weeks ago when it was announced. with Zach Snyder I think it's interesting. I think it has a lot of potential then smallaller scale kind of story, you know, we're talking about a story that You could go very big, but you know, I think that if you set it in just like a big maximum prison keep it contained for the most part I think Snyder can pull it off for sure. I think this is actually a good move Next up There's so many trail is a breakdown. Let's go through a bunch of these trailers Unbelievable stuff this week. So I want to talk about the lucky trailer which we saw a few months ago at an Apple event. Now this is one of Apple's most anticipated films of the summer, mostost anticipated shows of the summer which hits screens july fifteenth on Apple TV, starring Ana Taylor Joyce, Drew Starking, Timothy Olifin and Annette Benning Now Ana plays this woman named Lucky who was raised by her Con Ater father, played by Olipant. who gets caught up in some kind of crime conspiracy Looks like great action. I love the world builduilding. It looks like a jolt of adrenaline that Apple, I think, needs something like this in their library and catalogue of shows And they're in the business of Ana, Taylor Joy because they just did the movie last year with thir Gorge and Miles Teller the Gorge That was that a pretty good time I actually watched it twice and I liked it even better the second time time. But we also got a trailer for fall too. Fall one came out a couple of years ago was a big hit and fall two is just raising the stakes. It's bigger, it's bolder. It looks higher production value, of course. And I think this looks pretty damn good. We have some fun sequences that kind of harken back to a pet detective and cliffhanger cross a rope bridge. That's all I could think of. so I think that'll be fun. but this is going to hit theaters septtember second, fall to deadpoint. I think the settings good to cliff side and one of those hiking like really intense hiking trails It looks like the steps along the cliff face broke so now they're trapped on this platform. It looks good Next up, H h Before you get to more trailers, I found this or I heard about this fun fact about obsession. What is it So The great scene, obviously I'm sure everyone listening a scene obsession, but this isn't really a spoiler. but there's a really important scene in the first act where Be drops off Niki at her house and they have this interaction where He's so nervous. He's trying to ask her out. He's got this huge crush on her and You kind of interpret it a few different ways because Nikki is sort of like asking, do you like me? also his friends owning him at the same time. So as an audience member, you're not exactly sure. and it makes a lot of sense because for this scene Kury Barker had Indy Naverette filmed two different takes. one where she was interested in Bear and one where she wasn't. And the final cut merges both, so Niickki's true feelings towards Bear are ambiguous And I thought that was really interesting. A similar kind of thing where this happened in a previous movie is not a love interest thing, but an American psycho where J Willam Defoe was has a scene with Patrick Bateman as the detective, the first time the interact And he's starting to question Bateman about, you know, random things involving Paul Allen And he was directed by Mary Harron to do two different versions. One. where he suspects Patrick Bateman and one where he doesn't suspect Patrick Bateman, and it gives the audienceces great feeling of unease and ambiguity of like is he suspicious of him? or no, he's not suspicious of him. or wait he's not I thought it was really interesting. Love that fact. It's great. And also one more thing about Paramount and Warner Bothers. So obviously the big murgers startarting to happen Paramount is prepared to sell some of their children's TV assets to secure EU approval for their Warren Brothers acquisition. And this would include Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, which are huge properties for Paramount. Well, maybe cards and Network willll find a home somewhere. Maybe hopefully. We'll More trailers. There's a bunch more left But first, a clip from Evil Dead Burn was released. I like how they're showing little nuggets of the film rather than a bunch of trailers. So little chicken nugies. Yeah, a little nugies. This shows the family battling what looks to be the first person to turn into a deadite And they're fighting this young woman who looks to be either the daughter in the family or what have you And they subdue her get her to the basement And just and I like this. the family' about to leave this house. They're like, fuck this, let's get out of here But then they encounter another deadite who's either another family member or someone they know really well. who's standing outside, keeping them trapped in the house. And it looks like this is just the beginning of an army of deeadites coming to invade the home. An army. whichich I like. I like how it's gonna be, It looks like it's gonna to be a bunch of deeadites in this movie. We've also got a new trailer for the invites starring a great cast of Olivia Wild, Teth Rogan Pily Crz and Edward Norton This is about a couple whose marriage is on thin ice, Seth Rogan and Olivia Wild's characters, but they invite their enigmatic upstairs neighbors for a dinner party and the night spirals into unexpected places, including group sex Group sex for sex. It looks like a good adult film. I like it Al not adult film, but like a mature film Ault centry Yeah. adult theme film There's a new trailer for by any means. This stars Mark Wahhberg and Yaabbdul Matine II Based on a true story, it looks pretty interesting. It's about a notorious mafia hit man played by Wahlberg and a young black FBI agent played by Mine Adul Matine II, who team up to investigate murders by the KKK And yeah, it looks cool. Wabbert's got got a fake nose, this big ass fake nose. You know what didn't look cool was was the man on Fire TV show that he did with Netlix.'s doing well Netlix. Is it really? Yeah It's been in there becausecause it's new. But it only has eleven thousand ratings on IMDB and it's already been out for over a month I'm not watching it. I love talking to a lot of people about it and no one's happy about that being remake. I love Tony Scotts. Well, Tonycotts was a remake No, I mean, well, Tony's being remade. Yeah. Yes. yeah, that's a remake for But that was a remake that was deserved because the original version was pretty old and very camp at times. It wasn't quite the visceral experience that Tony was able to craft with Denzel. That's a great point. But also there's such different interpretations. This one's just generic Netflix action movie turn into a series. I started Widows Bay How great is an apppple and it's awesome. People keep saying it's made. youve got to watch it. It's it the full season out There are six episodes in. so you can catch up before it finishes. But I watched the first two episodes last night And I'm hooked. It's really great classic ghost story horror done right And it's really well made. The cast is awesome. Matthew Reese leaves it And it's a fantastic New England story. Oh, I gott to check this out because it's all over the social peopleople keep talking. I keep seeing this clip of this lady with a shock and I'm like, who is? It lives up to the hight. All right.'m I'm gonna to give a shot because I want to watch I want to watch Cpe Fair too. Yeah. The first episode' great. the second one's next week. It's a really good slow build. They're doing a great job with it. Do you see Iice cream in the trailer for Elon? No, I didn't learn abouts next film. It looks pretty fun. So it follows an ice cream man who serves kids ice cream that turns them into murdering sociopaths in theaters august seventh. It looks hilarious and brutal at the same time. It looks like a very fun tone. What's he putting in that ice cream? Honestly. Adam Wingard's new film Oslaught dropped a trailer. This is an action movie starring Sorry. Adria Aja. rgano, Alex Piera Jrew Starkke. Jrew Starkkey a couple of things this week. Rebecca Hall And Reginald Ville Johnson and a bunch of other great actors. M Dan Stven, Dan Steven. Michael Bean, Michael Bean This is about a mother living in a trailer park who uses her skills to protect her loved ones from a threat that escaped I'm a secret military base. It looks like a bunch of super soldiers who were experimented on by the government, escaped their confines or are now in a killing spree Kind of like the guest. Yeahah Kind of like the guess back to his roots. Yeah. I mean, it looks like a ton of fun. herer character It seems to be like an ex military. she's got a purple heart. So it looks like a ton of fun.
