As a host of this show and someone who's on the internet quite extensively with video content, it's been important to me over the years to start looking better and making sure my fashion's up to speed. and Quince has been a great partner in helping that They sent us a bunch of great clothes and I got to say One of my favorite pieces I've gotten this entire year just in general Is this incredible Denim jacket that I love to rock and go denim on denim Cowboy Tuxedo. It's one hundred percent cotton and it's ridiculously comfortable. I can speak on behalf of Anthony who loves linen. I tell them all the time. All you wear is linen. You're always on a vacation in Europe, even if you're in LA. and Quintince is one hundred percent European linen pants and shirts are incredibly breathable. He loves them so much. He's literally wearing them right now on his amazing Eur old trip that he's been on And Quint has so much to offer that two guys with totally different styles can find plenty of options for wardrobe and clothing Their tees are also soft enough to literally live in all day And somehow everything at Quince is literally fifty to eighty percent cheaper than similar brands They work directly with ethical factories and cut out the middlemen so you're paying for exceptional quality, not the brand markup Make your summer wardrobe easier. That's Q U I N C E . com slash Riders for free shipping and three hundred and sixty five day returns. Qince d. com slash Raiders Supergirl falls back to earth with a poor box office performance. The Odyssey canceled all influencers screenings. A twenty four is partnering with AI, the first image of Robert Eggar's werewolf drop and there's so much more to break down In this episode of Movie News. Let's begin with the box office. A again, Anthony is out of the studio today. He's on his bureau trip with his lady friend. So screw him. he's having a great time in Italy, but we're here in Los Angeles, but I do have voice of Sarah in the background who will be helping me break down stories, makeake sure I don't mess up or say anything incorrect, right? Yeah, exactly. Thank you for joining the show. Now first of all, big weekend of the box office Supergirl, which was projected to come in around fifty million dollars projections the last few weeks ended up flopping even harder than that. Big underperformer. I couldn't even top the box office because toy story five is still dominating.ill seconde weekend Sarah pulled seventy million domestic inssane. crazy. Already over three hundred million dollars domestic. It's going to be projected to be the biggest performer of the entire Toy Story franchise. Of course, adjusted for inflation, all that blah, blah, blah, But' still a very big performer. They're predicting about one point two billion after its's run. but suupergirl bigest story of the weekend because this movie on a budget of around one hundred eighty million dollars plus an extensive marketing campaign Big under performance here at under forty million dollars in its opening domestic weekend. Yes again stiff competition with Toy Story five. Yes, Jackass six is playing in theaters to that open, but that wasn't a huge film This opened lower than the marvels and lower than Morbius and I haven't even heard of the marbles Exactly. That's Wow. And the audience, sixty percent was male audience, forty percent was female audience. So a lot of the girls didn't turn out for Supergirl. Wow. Sarah, why didn't the girlies turn out? Oh man, I don't know. I don't know. I don't wantan to be the voice of the women here. So the thing with Supergirl is It was a pretty it was a pretty good movie to an extent We're doing a big breakdown tomorrow, our full thoughts I think he had a lot of issues mostly script related overall, I think Millie Alcock was a great casting. Mamoa was great, whatever scenes he was in I mean, visually it looked just like Superman in so many ways. A lot of great practical creature effects, which I thought was the best parts The needle drops were sometimes questionable, but overall, the script was bigest the biggest letdown for this film A story that really didn't have much going for it, not much to root for Kind of a very, very bland generic villain, which really held it back. When it comes to big blockbusters like this and superhero movies, your movie can only be really as good as your villain. And this villain is a nothing burger of a villain. Do doesn't really do much. I think that's the biggest problem of the movie. but More breakown tomorrow on the episode as we extensively review Supergirl. Anthony will be in that episode as well. So suupergirl, huge underperformance at the box office. You can anticipate a huge drop off for its second week and next week. Obsession. This movie just won't go away. People are obsessed. Seventh weekend And it pulled nine point four million and it's seven fucking weekend. That's crazy. This is like top gun maverick, man. This is insane.. Mvie theaters and exhibitors are just like loving this movie because every time passes with the movie in theaters, the ticket to sales ratios goes into movie theaters favor. starts heavy with the studios, but then as the weeks go on, the favor goes to the theaters, the exhibitors get more and more of a cut of every ticket sale. so they're making a good amount of money off obsession, which is fantastic Jack ass, best and last, which we went to the premiere for. I gott to say Absolute blast. So good. And like nostalgic too. L we were almost crying at the end. I was crying Yeah. I cried up almost two or three times like getting very emotional because They're calling it the last. We'll see. that's what they about that. But it was really cool because they all the Jackass movies, they always splice in stuff from the TV show in the old movies. and what this one did was released original things that they never were able to air. Wh on the show After seeing it, I understand why they weren't able to air it. crazy that they were. Dangerous they were. Yeah. I think the it opened with the most dangerous stunt I've ever seen I was like on the edge of my seat cringing. I like didn't want to look at times. It was yeah, I was like, I can't believe they're showing this right now. And this opening scene was wasn't even in the show. This is what they used to do. They'd go around f around doing crazy stuff. and's the most dangerous thing I've seen Johny Knoxfield do. And that's talking about a guy who gets in the ring with blls with no protection at all. like it was a crazy jarring opening. It' something they were never able to release. There's a few more gags and sketches that We in the movie that they never had permission to release because they were so dangerous, which is really fun to see because they're like, fuck it, let's do it. It's been long enough. peopleeople are desensitized to our actions But it was really good, really funny And on a budget of just eight point five million dollars, these mov I mean we ten Yeah ten million dollars budget. These are cheap to make. Yeah. yeep It pulled eight point five million do. We were talking to the special effects guy, Elia Popov, who did our car explosion. and I was like, I called it. I was like, you know, I bet you E' Elia's bill was probably the highest thing in their budget and he confirmed that it was indeed the highest thing in the budget. You don't need a ton of money to make these movies. No You just need some stupid people to do things. They do have some bombastic sequences though Yeah The book ends with obviously the iconic jackass, great opening and great closing, but the biggest they've ever done. Yeah. And that's where the budget went. Y It's a ton of fun though. Disclosure dayay Doing pretty pretty okay. Not an amazing performer overall so far, the box office in its third weekend seven point eight million domestically. It's about to break a one hundred million dollars domestic, which is pretty okay for a Spielberg movie, one hundred fifty million dollars budgets It'll probably maybe break even eventually This film has skewed heavily older, with Obviously most Spielberg movies, The under seventeen attendance was basically virtually non existent for this film in u Even just fourteen percent of its audience was aged eighteen to twenty four, which is odd because Spielberg's always been great at capturing youth. and capturing a young audience. But I mean, he's geared more towards adult more mature films the last ten years, fifteen years I mean Fablman's kind of Westide story sort of, but, you know, the post movies like that It seems like the younger kids aren't too familiar with his game. Right. Well, I don't mean they didn't grow up with him. You know, we grew up with him. so we'll follow him off a cliff if we I was off a cliff, we're going off. St even jumpps. I gott to go. Y, Eactly. Something's down there. Something important's happening. Yeah. So yeah, it's interesting that Spielberg His film Disclosure D could not pull really anyone under twenty four. ing. We're going to see it today. I'm seeing it for the first time. It'll be my second time It's a great movie. I really enjoyed it. I'm excited. It's fucking Spielberg. Spielberg Itlast. Come on. Backroom's still doing pretty good. This movie was the first A twenty four film to break two hundred million dollars, then three hundred million dollars the box office. They are paying the bills for the next five years with this single movie alone. and you guarantee they'll probably have a sequel ing pretty pretty quickly. Stay with Scaryovie six, the biggest performer in the franchise still pulled in two point seven five domestically in its fifth weekend, I think, prettytty solid performer broke one hundred million dollars domestically. Garantee Scary Movie seven next year with obsession and backrooms is the back. Yeah. have to. have to Ghost face in the backrooms. Yes. have to do that. That'd be great I need that like by April next year. I want that Somebody needs to break a one wish Willow Exactly. Some crazy shit in But they'll do like something funny like a breakaking dildo with. Oh my gosh. 'cause that's what they do over there. There's a couple of new releases coming out this upcoming week. Can we talk about minions and monsters? 'cause oh my gosh. What a fucking blast. That was so much fun. We went to a press greeting last week And saw Mions and monsters. I haven't seen all the minions movies. I haven't seen all the despicable me movies. I know they're fun and cute. Yeah and We did the junk it yesterday, gotot to interview the cast, Jesse Isisenberg, Jeff Bridges, Allison Janny, Freaking insane. Oscar winning cast Yeah Um, two Oscars just between those two and This movie is delightful. It was a wonderful story about Filmmaking is the backtop. It was Babylon with minions. It was great. Set in the nineteen twenties, basically for the most part of minions, new characters trying to figure out how to tell stories how to become filmmakers make a monster movie but they go through every genre using that to spice as a motif throughout the stories and the sequences. It's freaking hilarious it's so well made. Yeah ye. It's such a good time. Highly recommend you go watch it. I couldn't believe how good it was honestly. And then the invite, the new film from Olivia Wilde starring her as well as Seth Rogan. And who else in this movie? Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton and it's a CQuart quartet movie Two couples that are gonna get it on. Yeah, a quartet movie. sure. quuartet? We'll go with it.Quartet I'll ask my resident friend who does that. All right, let's get into the oddyssey guys I have to admit sometimes the workload of the podcast can get overwhelming with All the recording, the editing, we go to a lot of events, travel a lot and I get burnt out quite a bit. and I think that's where it's important to consider therapy and talking to somebody And finding a therapist, it's already hard enough Eespecially when the takes your insurance and that's where Rula comes into play because other therapy platforms fall short, but Rula doesn't. They do things differently. That's RuLA. com slash riders You deserve mental health care that works with you, not against your budget Big, big news, The Odyssey is not doing influencer screenings. And man, the videos are pretty funny I'm very fortunate. I get invited to a lot of screenings and over the last few years it's been Pretty much every week there's something going on, which I'm very grateful for I understand the obviousy not wanting to do this They don't need to do it. Exactly. First of all, they don't need influential screens. Christopher Nolan's name carries enough weight where it's going every movie he puts out It's going to generate six hundred million dollars to the box offffice minimum just because it's a Christherolan film. That's guaranteed. Internationally, he is he's the biggest director alive The No influencer screenings thing It's fine with me. It's no big deal. I already got early tickets well not early tickets, the day of onn the seventeenth, we're gonna to go see it So I'll see it date, it comes out, which will be fine New influenza screensings, hopefully's not sign of the tides to change. I think that there have been a few campaigns recently that have led to this. I think that most notably some bigig ten pole films from Disney have turn people away from wanting to watch the marketing of creators on social media. Am I a part of that? I don't know It is what it is. The industry is always changing. I don't think that this is going to be a big change for marketing, I still think creators will be key to marketing films, but I think there's going to be more nuanced involve in how creators and quote unquote, influencers are involved in marketing campaigns because I think if I'm on a marketing team for a film And I'm looking at the last several years, what kinds of people am I inviting to these screenings? Obviously my show, our show is film centric which makes sense, but Sometimes I'm at events and there's people that don't really know anything about movies and their content' totally different, which is fine. You want mass appeal. Are you more concerned with getting engagement on hashtags and views and clicks on Instagram and TikTok versus actually converting ticket sales with audiences that you can take advantage of with social creators. Right, exactly. Yeah. I think I think studios are definitely just going to like re think about how they're doing it. But I mean, marketing, everybody's on their phonone. Eact. That's where everybody's looking to get their news, to get their like what's going on in the world. So I don't think it's going to go away But it just might be like for people like Christopher Nolan You don't need it because everybody's going to generate all that buzz and stuff anyway. You don't need to pay people or invite people out to do stuff to generate that buzz. There's no denying that. creators like ourselves and other film creators, we get more views than like sccreenramp, Collider, Empire, Variety. We get more views than these outlets on social media. Yeah. mayaybe not necessarily in terms of clicks on articles and stuff like that, but There's some hybrid I think that will be figured out, but I don't think this is a sign that it's going to end. but Like you said, no one doesn't have to do it. Yeah. I mean, and especially for like indndie movies and stuff like that. like you still heavily are going to need to rely on marketing and stuff like that. one hundred percent independent film needs social creators more than ever, but big blockbusters probably don't need it, especially when Nolan's involved with this kind of like Nolan is the biggest star in Hollywood. hands down. L it's like him and Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise Three other guys we'd follow off a cliff. Yes, exactly. If any of those three guys jump, I am jumping with. Christher Nolan also said with the Ozzy coming up very soon. firstirst of all, the Giant Trojan horse, the third foot tall ones. There's two that have been placed O one in Miami, one in Los Angeles at the Universal Citywalk, which is really cool And then no one also talked about the Cyclops and the team for the Odyssey real sixty foot contraption, which was used for the Cyclops on the set of the Odyssey. too quote him everything about the Cyclops sequence is aimed at trying to imagine what would this be like in real life. Obviously I'm sure there'll be visual effects in this film, but they are heavily leaning into practical filmmaking like Christopher Nll always does. I think the cyclops will be a combination of this sixty foot contraption. They also made a thirteen foot puppet as well as I'm sure they'll be doing a lot of camera tricks you know, u perception did, you know The way you place the camera, the way you place the lens, what kind of lens you're doing, You can affect perception Really effectively, practically in camera. Did you watch that Force perserspective is the official term? What was how the movies we love or how movies made or something There was a documentary about they break down movies Yeahah, and elf was one of the el And Lord of the Rings are two great examples of force perspective where I think I guarantee they're doing this in the odyssey. First of all, an elf, obviously all of the elves are played by people that are of average height mostly. and Will Farre a tall guy, but he's still an average height human a little taller. So force perspective, he's closer to lens at specific sequences you put the other characters away with the lens type crushing in the space with the lens zooming in, whatever you want to do. It makes them look like they're standing next to them. sameame thing with Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings is way more complex where they have Elijah Wood, who's five foot six. Ian McKellenan who's probably six foot tall. notot a huge height difference, but force perspective on locations on those sets and building set specifically on the Lord of the Rings and feellllowship of the Ring and also on the hobby with Bilbo And with Ian Holan Fellllowship in the Ring, the sets are moving with the cameras. So the cameras' moving at the same time the sets are moving. so like Gandalf and Bilbo's chairs are moving further away from each other or closer away to each other while the camera's moving as well to maintain the force perspective. It's very complex, but it's seamless. Yeah It's all done on camera. If you haven't seen BTS of that, it's incredible to watch how they did that because it's so like technical. So clever. Yeah smart. and simple. That's why it's timeless. It's blue screen and green screen And then they did the hobbit and then that's a lot blue screen and green screen. But the Odyssey I guarantee is doing stuff like that. It's projecting to also open to about eighty to one hundred million dollars domestically, which is right on par for the average Christian Nolan film. that's not a Dark Knight film. The Chroge Norris popcorn bucket also got revealed and it's pretty massive. It's got to be one of the biggest popcorn buckets I've seen And that's pretty exciting stuff. Yeah. I'm gonna have to get one withith the IMAX camera that we're still waiting on. St still wait on two of those cameras That one's cool. I like that. Let's get to some more news. Spidererman, brand new days coming up. Tw weeks after Odyssey, this comes out in theaters. The marketing press has begun Zenda Tom Holland and the rest of the cast are doing marketing around the world. A couple new clips and teasers out. so go ahead and check those out if you want some stuff and some more action sequences. A really big story Another AI partnership with a big studio. This time, A twenty four partnering with Google and AI. Under the deal, Google is investing around seventy five million dollars to collaborate on multiy year R and D projects aimed at creating AI workflows that support filmmaking creativity, with A twenty four providing direct input from its filmmakers. A twenty four has released a statements defending their AI research partnership quote A twenty four Our relationship with our audience is something we don't take for granted. This partnership exists because we want to dictate what tools get built for artists. And so they have a voice in shaping them rather than having tools handed to them. We'd rather have a seat at the table than on the sidelines. Let's have an adult conversation here. Once the floodgates of AI opened, it was only a matter of a time before all the chips fell. all the dominals come undone A lot of more studios are partnering now and now When it comes to AI filmmaking Generative AI, I don't think will ever work for film What this sounds like and what I'm guessing it will be like with Ben Afflex company that he sold to Netflix is using AI to develop tools mostly in the pre production process. You know, this sounds like it's going to be helping creators or independent filmmakers do storyboarding, do location scouting Any that can help expedite the pre production process at minimal cost, where something like even location scouting, you have to put tens of thousands, sometimes hundreds of thousand dollars into that kind of a budget. just for that. Y. Just to send your location person and your location scout to different locations around the world, where you have to shoot doing test shots there. So It's just one of those things that we have to deal with. It's going it's existing. it's going to keep existing I think we'll be heading in a direction where we're going to have Th thingsings in the beginning of movies, this movie is not made with generative AI But it's not going to say it wasn't made without AI. in the pre production process. And so it seems like every studio is just dipping their toes in. Yeah And again, it's been here for a while, but last year was the year where everyone's like, Ohh yeah,'re today Yeah, we're going We're start to come out. Yeah.. I was talking to an animator who from the TV show Ted They did this episode where they did a Bill Clinton guy. They put Seth McFarlane in as Bill Clinton.pl his face. Theyplac his face. Yeah. and they they AI to track and follow all the dots on his face to figure out where all the placements needed to go. That would have normally taken somebody like weeks to mark every single dot and Excuse me, trace out the face and like do that. But AI, using AI, they were able to do that in like two days So it cuts down on time significantly. But you still need that person to do that Somebody still has to feed the AI all the information. Somebody still has to make sure that the AI is doing it right and keep it on track and all that stuff. Anway I don't know, man. It's just Generally I put my foot down completely But the AI entering workflow is inevitable and it's here Um teach their own, you know? Yeah to each their own. We'll see. But anyways, people are not happy about it. Real quick, cheheck out this amazing V for vendetta poster over my right shoulder inside this beautiful light boox, looks like a movie theater, right? We finally got our first look at Robert Eggers, wereerewolf, starring Aaron Taylor Johnson, what happened there. A, I almost said A A Ron, I think. Almost want Ke and Peel on here. Starring Aaron Taylor Johnson as a werewolf in theaters Christmas Day this year I am so excited about this film. Obviously Dun'ess like my number one most anticipated, the Odyssey as well. I forgot Dune was coming out this year because of eighteen going on. What a week after Dune werewolf comes out. And the first still is grades thirteenthentury Aaron Taylor Johnson looks like he's hunting with his wife. wolves and his dogs as hounds with a spear And It's got a really interesting aesthetic. So Robert Egars and his DP Yarn Blas, who's amazing best DPs alive They shot this medieval film on Cor thirty five million Color thirty five MillMeter film. originally they were going to do color I mean black and white and sorry. But they utilize post production techniques to emulate in Orthrochromatic aesthetic and incorporate authentic black and white brain rthchromatic Orthochromatic Orthoromatics. Now that's a word. And I got it. Yep. said it correctly to incorporate authentic black and white grain structure to achieve a grungy historical raw look. And they push the bounds of what you can do with film in this era with Nosferatu and I can' wait to what this movie is going to look like, but also This upcoming trailer for Motor City that I just watched This movie looks awesome. You were telling me about this. This movie, Motor City, Best trarailer of the week, is an action film starring Alan Richson Jack Reacher with no dialogue. There's no dialogue spoken in this film But there' sound, of course. None of the actors speak dialogue. They scream and grunt to obviously all that and cry But there's no words The film follows a working class man who goes after revenge against a gangster who framed him for a crime he didn't commit This looks awesome. The stunts, the practical filmmaking, you got Richson hanging on the back of a convertible, driving down a city street. Heck yeah. It looks so cool. I'm excited. July twenty fourth, Motor City like'ry the fuck up. There's something really cool about non verbal movies that rely just on the action and the emotion. So that's something AI will never be able to do is create emotion Exactly, ye. You can never do a AI, can never make a non verbal film. No. Nope, there's something about the eyes. There's something about the eyes that you can just tell that's not human right away. It's the eyes Chico. they never lie Scarface. Nices about Netflix. Millie Bobby Brown, another Netflix film or show N're gonna to leave that streamer, man Millie Bobby Brown and David Mill Bob Brown. Millie Bobby Brown. Bown And David Harbor. gonna starars father and daughter, kind of again. Ag Netflix series from Jack Thorne, who did adolescence. When the money's right, the money's right. Y. The film follows an FBI agent who was forced back into the field when his estranged daughter vanishes on a mission Okay, cool. Let's stay on Netflix firstirst of all One piece The remake dropped its first trailer. Now this obviously one piece is still ongoing twenty three years into the show, but Netflix, we've talked about this a few episodes ago, is remaking the whole show because there are over a thousand episodes It's a very jarring thing to start and it deters a our viewers from even beginning. So Netflix is doing a condensed version of the show. Okay. And this starts on february feebruary twenty twenty seven is the first episode of Netflix's one piece remake. Interesting. Yes, very, very That has a very strong fan base. so I'm curious to see how the fan base will react I'm sure they oneon' even watch it Maybe go' find out. And one more story on Netflix Have you Seeen the stills from Ray Gunn The new film from Brad Bird, who did the Incredibles. I haven't. So he has a new film coming out following Ray Gunn, a private investigator, drawn into a case involving aliens and murder all in an alternate futuristic city Matropia very Film newewir nineteen fifties sixties style. Oh Releases december eighteenth on Netflix and Pm pretty disappointed about this because it looks awesome And it's just going to disappear after a week of streaming and no one's really going to talk about it But this already looks like a movie that should have been a theatrical release. And I wonder how Brad Byird couldn't get a budget from an animation studio that has theatrical distribution You had to go to Netflix. This looks cool. I know. Can you believe that? What the heck? Like who would to what studio wouldn't wantan to make that and put it in theaters But I'm sure Netflix was like his last resort. Like they're the only ones who would give me a budget. Yeah is too bad Tal talk about some DC stuff outside Supergirl. A couple new animated series are in the works, A Joker anime series whichich will follow Joker as he launes a ruthless crusade through Gotham's underworld to discover Batman's killer creat by Sola Eterainment, who did War of the Roy Ho And absolute Batman, the comic is getting an animated series as well. Scott Snyder will serve as showrunner U oh Speaking of Jesse Eisenberg who we just interview yester His new film, which is a musical, a theatrical musical ot obviously it's like theatrical music, but it's about theater P called The debut just dropped its first trailer, stars Julian Moore, Pul Giomati Hallie Bailey and Havannah Rose Leu It follows a shy woman played by Julianne Moore, who was cast in a local production of an original musical and it looks outstanding. look Standing. I'm excited for this. Jesse just won a bafterter for screenwriting for his first film which was excellent Kinn Colk won the Oscar for Best S supportpporting Actor for that film as well. But man, this movie looks fantastic. I'm excited about it It looks very funny. Julian Moore basically like this This woman who's never, it seems like pursu her creativity wants to act and the way they treat local theater like they're on Broadway, it seems very funny and Paul Giimani plays very Power hungry, domineering theater director, it seems great. Which is kind of on brand. I come from a theater background from a small small community theater background and it's They get really into their theater. Yeahta. Yeah. Yeahta Let's talk about a new An announcement for an animated film starring Timothy Chalamne and Selena Gomez Illumination's new ROMC, not alone. I think this is this is the second time Chalam hass done a voice acting for an animated film He did it on what was that Kid Cutty movie year or two ago. You voiced a character on that camera was called, but All right, All right, Iillumination. tellelling you guys, minions and monsters is great. We got Oscar winners and Emmy winners here. The film follows a religious hit man who struggles to balance work, faith and fatherhood in theaters october ninth. looks awesome. Handsome Haog. Handsome Haog tos my guy. Falls a prisoner in nineteen thirty three, Oregon Oreonon A who must smuggle gold through the deadly wilderness in order to gain his freedom. Theaters september eighteenth looks pretty good. We have a new film from Tako Waititi first trailer for Clara in the Sn Drop, starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams. The film follows a robot. who is bought by a family to help them heal physically and mentally in a dystopian future. in theaters october twenty third. I think this is going to be a big boom of kind of movies. We've always We recently had compompanion, which is a horror movie sort of like this.. as well as there are a few Black Meror episodes that are similar to this In Theatater' october twenty third, this is a more of an interesting take about kind of like Treating these androids sortve as a metaphor for Orphans. that are looking for a home to be adopted But somewhere between in the film, they depict them like it's a joke of like somewhere between like a child and a dog. like, oh, they' treat you treat you great and like they're trying to get adopted but bought. Yeah, but it it's mixing them both, like both of those worlds. adoption in orphans which is an interesting perspective because they're not human Right, But I'm sure the hum manuals shine through and they're going to be more human than humans themselves. And that's the moral of the story, that humans are robots And robots are humans. Yeah, That's what like every movie does these days. Yeah, yeah, no, it is such a trend. Yeah.
