Today's episode is about a reality show that is already surpassed overver eight hundred million watching minutes And we're really early into the season This show is filmed in Fiji pretty much in real time, and it's with people in bikinis. I'm talking about season eight of Love Island USA which premiered on Peacock on june second. It is already broken records in the first few days alone Now, Love Island originated in the UK where it became an absolute cultural phenomenon the kind of show that people called in sick from work to watch It caused genuine national debate and it launched more Instagram careers than probably a Kardashian collab. Now the American version landed on Pacock and it had a quiet couple of seasons And then season six happened and it became Peacock's most watched original series in the history of the platform. Season seven racked up fifteen point four billion minutes of watch time That's what would be, like a billion, like the GDP of a small nation but with eyeballs. And here iss the format. It's deceptively simple, which is why it's absolutely diabolical. You've got a group of attractive singles and they're called Islanders. They move into this villa in Fiji, they are cut off from the outside world No phones, no news, no escape And they must be coupled up at all times or they risk being voted off the show So new people called bombshells are periodically dropped into the villa, like grenades and linen shorts and bikinis Existing couples must decide whether to stay loyal or recouple with somebody new There's also something called Casa amor which I can only describe as a psychological stress test So essentially, all the women go to a second villa All the men get a new set of women dropped on them and everybody is left to be either faithful or spectacularly blow up the relationship on national TV. So it's basically where trust goes to die. Now the host is Ariana Madtox. The show is narrated by a British comedian by the name of Ian Sterling who provides a running dead pan commentary over everything that happens, and that alone is worth It is so funny This season's cast is already having major problems and hookups. And within days of the premiere, there was already recouplings, stolen partners and at least one situation where I was actually watching with an open mouth. It is the hot show of the summer. and what did I do? Of course, I had to ask Chrisa Rosa to watch it. Now, as you know, Chris is a reality TV producer and podcast host And I've made him watch a number of shows. and when he doesn't really get it It makes me laugh even more. I need you to understand how hard I was laughing through this entire episode and I just watched it back and I had eyeliner like running to my face and he never even told me. I look insane So You're going to love this show because it's so easy to binge. It's going to be a conversation starter. It is not complex in the way that some of the other reality shows are where you're wondering someone's origin story. likeike this is just Go back in time to when you just graduated from college and all you did was like go and meet people in bars. It's like that. and that is the reason younger people in your life are watching, you can talk to them about it. I'm fine, but I'm not great because the wasting two hours of my life watching this show was not fun Doid you feel like you've lost brain cells? one hundred a million percent Have you ever watched the show before? Nope, notot one frame. Not one Not one frame, never once Not even the UK version. Nope Okay, is this going into it like, oh Lordy, because you are not straight Well, I'm like, what' the what's the buzz about? Everyone like is falling over themselves to like love the show. So let's see what we got. Yeah, ye yeah. And I saw what we got and it's not great Well, let's start from the top I'm interested into what you think given that you do work on these type of shows with me through aesthetically what it looks like, what you think has to go into pre production findinding the right cast members and the beginning setup of the show. you were as you begin to watch it, what's running through your brain? It's like very big the place they're at is like huge. Like it's like a big set. so They do have that going for them. Like when I'm watching it, I'm like, wow, it's like so big And I would presume they have cameras all over the place. When you can see them in the of the shots, you see the little Rbo cams. Yeah. But seemingly it's like mostly I really wasn't paying that much attention to it, but it's seemingly like a lot of it is Roboc cam footage O the way, does that lessen the amount of people that are on set? Does that cut cost? And there's like Rboc cams? It's not even that like, yes, if there's never any big cameras that are like on like a camera operator, but like there's always someone that has to operate those cameras. so there's still people But it's like then there's just like you never see anyone. L it's just truly them in the house walking around with like no big cameras walked like Like the producers could just be off the floor seemingly there's not much producing that happens on the show, hence why it's so boring. So Well, I'm wondering, well, that's a good point. I'm wondering if that makes them a little bit more likely to hook up because you know the the in yester year when you had not like standing there being like R with a gigantic camera like next to the hot tub like or so you're not going to get it on or what? Like that's not happening because Do they even like hook up? Yeah, I hereere's what I watched Burns at night. I think I'm Here's what I watched. I watched The episode where thirty minutes in we get to that like bed where they like all are on that bed together with the paint. Yes. And then like the aftermath of the bed is the one I watched Well, first when you when they begin the show, they do the packaging you know, like This is Kenzie. She's from Georgia But what they do, which you would lose your mind about is remember that Nicole Kidman movie that was set in like the Hamptons or something, or like Nantucket, where they had the dance routine in the beginning of the show They kind of did that. ye where it's like a musical each person And the camera work, it's like quick shots, pull away, quick shot, pull away. And they're all in bikinis and the girls have to wear heels And they have them do all of these scenes where you basically they're like, we w wantna show you how hot this person is. Yeah, like you're just like on the beach like flinging your hair and like they're ye No, even worse It used to be just like that, or they would put them in a room with like neon lights Now they have to look like they are participating in a musical, but it's like not always in a group shot. So a lot of individual shots where they're like pretreend you are on center stage at Madison Square Garden in a Bikini with the heels on. and it's a tropical feel And we just want you to dance, dance like no one's watching, but also the rest of Madison Square Garden is watching So I don't know what music they're actually playing, but of course, they have the soundtrack for the show, which is often like In later scenes, it's like a made up song Aa seell in the sunset. But in the beginning shot, it's some song that they've obviously given to them and they've listened to it like fourteen times to know the words So you have the girls and the guys both lip syncing to that song, which is I hate this. Happy and summy. And the guys of course have the mic packs on with the bathing suits and they're sort of dancing. And then there's one girl they had her actually laying on the ground with an overhead shot in the bikini. and shes sort of like Dancing on the ground. You know when you're at home or maybe at a restaurant and there's like a good song on and you're kind of dancing in your chair and you really start to believe like I probably have really good rhythm. Like I'm a good chair dancer Well, they had a girl laying on the ground and she's sort of like Ground dancing, sort of You ask yourself, will she regt this decision? But then of course you are reminded that each of them are without a job and they really want to be famous. So they don't care what they have to do, right? Well, they have to do something to kind energy because through then once the show actually starts, it's all them like laying on Chay's lounges being like, yeah, like we're connecting. And it's like and they're just it's like and the girls are like, yeah, like I can be myself around you Like it's like I'm like, is has everyone been drugged that's in this? Like it looks like an ambian commercial. Like they're like That's the craziest part because Kenzie in the beginning shot, I actually thought someone needs to pull her aside and tell her like this is not a good look for you So she's got gigantic breasts and she's Anna B. I mean, body be banging. Body be banging, as we say. But they have across the board, honestly, but yeah, she's like those big knockers as we go She looks. She's gorgeous. They're having her film. like a package scene where she's dancing on a bed. And she's one of the girls You know, Like a pal dancer, like a song dancer like Mia, where you can just kind of like drop into a split. Well, she keeps doing that in a bikini. onto the bed, like Okay love that, honestly Well, like any guy would love it, but I mean that's flying. likeike, you know what I mean? at least there's at least there's performance happening here. And the boobs are like flying flying everywhere. put her in a bikini where it's like the cameraan probably an editor seem to do a lot of work about like strategy, like we can her nipple out in this. Yeah, No not even that. like the bottom part of it b wherere like something's gonna pop out and I don't know what's gonna happen. We can between Menora and Majora. like and so we have to make sure that we're 'ause no one's wearing any clothing. Like there's never No, oh, no. L ever. like until at night when they're like which like the first episode I watched their at night ep thing. They were like Oh my god, we're all gonna be in lingerie and like, Oh my go, that's like crazy. And they gave all the guys like silk boxers and they're like, I want to see them all in sil in boxers, just in just boxers. I'm like, How is that at all different from the bathing suits they've been wearing all day Well, at least with a bathing suit with a meatball hugger, you have a lot more fabric to withhold the boner, but a silk one like You know what I mean? Oh, that can't air on CBS. but think got they're on Pacock. I'tt even the whole thing anyway Okay, so beginning package, they have them do all of these dance. So it'll go from like a scene in a bed or at the beach or like a sequence where there are a lot of backup dancers and the girls like an overhead shot lying on the ground sort of dancing like in one place U and it made me think This must be exhausting for them But maybe they're just so happy about the opportunity they love. They don't want to have a job back home, but they but they must have taken hours and hours to make those shots happen What do you say to someone to get them excited for that. Okay. This is what we need you to do. We need you to pretend Funny enough you're on vacation. There's actually one h. Different usually different crews that come in and do those kinds of things. Oh, that's a different crew. Like when they do all the like, when they do all the like Promo stuff, that's usually always like a network situation versus like me It's usually run by the network. L I wouldn't come in there and be like telling them what to do it. It's like a network Like Yeah For Project Horway the season that just got announced, like all those photos of the designers, like that was in the middle of us doing a challenge. And it was like, okay, every fifteen minutes we're pulling someone for fifteen minutes so it's fair so that they all have the same amount of content away that they like or like Okay, like for fifteen minutes, you're gonna to go do that shot. like or whatever it was. It was more than that. But it's like I pull someone be like o Okay, you have to go to your promo now And then like they all did those And I was like no we were not a part of it at all. Like we were just like, you have to go now go by. J just you're out. aesthetically, it's a very bright show the colors it almost looks like Real House was in Miami. You can you know you can tell when you watch Miami that the color mixing is different than like real housewise of like something else. When it's so coming into the like tropical like it's just so funny because it's like Yeah. But then after the open opening sequence where they all have to lip sync and know the song, then you're having scenes where it's like selling sunset with the made upp songs They did have like big songs though. when I was watching. It was like They were playing like real music. Yeah, but like if they're sitting in a corner, it'll be like Like, let's say he's like Dancing the night with my love. Dancing the night night night, like yeah. But sometimes it is specific to their situation. like I don't know this could be a red flag. Red flags. Red flags are everywhere. Yeah I don't know, this guy, this this new girl that came in looks like my guy that I likes X, so like, I'm nervous and it's like X effect, the X is here now. Yeah, it get Stakes couldn't be lower by You tell me why, okay, what is okay? I know like I'm sorry for everything about you What is the point of this TV show D they are they trying to be together so that at the end if they're together, they win something. I they' like of course, they win some money. likeike if they're like in Nally could they start a startup maybe? No. No. no It's like two hundred fifty Yeah, I mean, what are they going to do with that? They're going to okay, when you take it's like it like it wasment for being on the show. Yeah. Yeah. What do you think they spend that money on procedures No no, they're gonna get it for free. They're going crredes for free C a credit card. procedures they paid for before they got to Love Island, maybe. Yeah. That's like I will say though, they're not as like they like facially, I'm not like scared of the women. L they're not coming in like injected to the hs, which I like. That's true. What else is this show That is the point is the slow mo. When that new girls soul came in in the seventh episode or whatever one I watched, they were like shooting her booty from the back and from the front and from the side. and I was like, whoa And I was like You know what I mean? It was like what else do they have if they don't have that That's true becausecause there's no story Like non There's nothing Do you think it's the right host for a job like this, or it doesn't even matter? But it doesn't matter. Who else like what does it matter I did think that the easiest job in hosting was Nick Cannon on the Mas singer. I think that guy has a really easy job too. I know but he at least hasays a gu that like be energetic. Yeah. She like was there and was like Oh my Godd. Like she lives in Yeah. Like like the worst bad gas that you would do in in like a And like an audition and the person would be like okay, we've seen enough. Like goodbe You know what I mean?ike like Because the whole thing is you want a couple to just all of a sudden start making out. That's literally the whole point of the show, I guess By the way, how do we get this job? We could do it? I don't want to do this this job. It's going to be a no for me do Do you think I could do this job if I showed up in regular clothes or you have to have a host Well you have to Yeah, you have to be like in like a thong bikini like crazy, Like the outfits are, although like that's the thing the bodies are banging. It's like'ird. It's so weird No Yes. No, it is weird. Yeah. Like grown men that like shave their pubic hair, I'm like, what is this Am I wrong? I don't know Like these prople cubes. Like I'm like, what is what's happening? I saw this a package without any pubic withithout any pubic hair. wouldn't you be like What's where am I Right? amm I wrong? I don't know That would that would be I feel like straight people I feel like straight people do that And I don't I don't know. I've been off the market for a while. I mean it's disturbing What What you've just informed me of is very upsetting I know, right What is that about? There's like not a body hair to be found on any of these men. not one Do they think that they like an Olympic swimmer, they maybe can run faster if they're without any? No they just like they think that that's like the hottest thing ever Okay It is because the guysy's bodies are great, but like It's just so strange as like a folk fludge adol to like Imagine like being with someone and in they're like, o, I shave my chest every day. They'd like what Do you think they get sick of just these wearing the bikinis and the bathing suits all day long? The show is so violently straight also, that so it bores me so much Why they make it less violently straight? They can't. They're locked into this, like Maybe they need to make an alternative show. Here's what, hereere's my notes Here's my note. I wrote, Okay, thirty minutes in, I get what this show is porn for straight women that can't be as sexually liberated as they wish they could be. Oh, all right p Because when they go to this bed, did you see this bed scene where they have the paint on this? Yeah Like The one girl that goes around and is like findinds her guy, but then is like goes to the next guy to make sure and then goes back to him and then goes back to the other one then back to the the guy that she's with that is like The girls watching this like, this is their dream that they could do this and they would never ever act on it. And so they're like, you're right Is says am I wrong? No, that sounds right. Y. And like there's absolutely zer judgment in that at all. I'm just saying like that's what it is Yeah Well two super guys super hot guys in the situation. Yeah, because when you're in your early twenties, which is the, you know, all of the cast members, like You don't really have any idea who the kind of person you want to be with for the rest of your life. You just w to like hook up and have a good time. And that which is fine. Andes. it's so importanting. We should do that. Yeah. You should absolutely do that. I want to recend this highly one hundred percent But it's annoying when they're liked It's so funny when they try to act like they're like trying to look for something deeper and then their deeper thing is like, they both like one direction And then the guy who is like truly one of the hottest people I've ever seen and like anyone has ever seen is like, I got my nose pierce because Zane had his nose pierers. And she's like like walks away with like stars in her eyes because they both like one of the most famous boy bands to ever exist Also, the circumstances are so funny Like you just met somebody and the question is immediately like, okay, well, what are some of your red flags? Like don't even beat around the bush. Like let's get right into it. And then of course, they're so absurd Like the one girl actually said, well, a red flag for me is if a guy Bically shames me because I listen to a lot of Taylor Swift. It's like, your boyfriend was an assho Do you know what I mean? That's the other part of it is that it's like Every single one of them just has a story about how they were in like a very toxic relationship. And they're like I'm so broken. And I'm like, Yeahah, ' because you were really hot and then you walk out with someone else that was really hot and you have nothing in common. and like You just all want to fight with each other. That's what do you know what I mean? like as to example of this is like when they do the bed challenge where like the guys' get like chained up to the bed. likeike Oh onm like what is this? nineteen ninety seven? Like what is happening And they're like chained up to the bed, like with their little boxers on I mean, the girls are like blindfolded and have like paint on their hands and they like to feel around, wink to all the guys and like figure out which one'es their like guy And then what are they what is the first girl do? She like crawls essentially, which I was like, I mean, honestly, it was hot. L you know they all are so beautiful that it was like, I was like, ooh, like so kinky. like, you know then The first body she finds, she just mounts him and starts macking out.ad. And then goes like down the line to each guy and does the exact same thing. until she finds the guy that she Nos is hers. Y p I was like, oh shit, this is gonna be like so much drama that she did this. and then Every single girl after her does that or worse. Yes. and it's like And they're all trying to pretend like they're in these like relationships that mean nothing like that they're like paired up, but it's like, you've known each other for what seven days, like you don't. Do you don't have a relationship You don't have any yet And But then they w they this too. It's like a real tongue throt. No they're like going in. Yeah. Which again Do it. Like let it let it all hang out quite literally. You know what I mean L they must be like just so you know, the audience is super hot into like just go full, full throttle. Yes. they're all, you know what I mean? Like I thought it was going to be the biggest drama ever that one girl kissed everyone and then every single one of them did theact same thing And like didn't know that they were doing it. Do you know what I mean? Like like they were all blindfolded, so they like on their own volition did the same thing And then then there's these two new girls that come in, wow, which was actually a good twist that while it was happening, these two new like slutty girls came in and were like making out with guys un bllindfolded fun.. So three days before the season aired The Vasana Montgomery was pulled from the original lineup after videos of her using a racial slur surfaced online So as a result, Gabriel entered as a bombshell instead due to uneven numbers And that mirrored what happened in season seven with Ulyssa was removed for the same reason That is like its own thing. But like none of them are like, being monsters to each other on the No. It gets all dumb and they're all making out and they have no loyalty to each other anyway. so what it matter?
