I have to first talk about my favorite story of the week and honestly, maybe my favorite story of the entire year so far And if you've been on social media at all in the last few days, you probably have seen this So this guy named Mike Morrison, a regular dad, lives outside Boston, wakes up at six thirty in the morning to the sound of bagpipes pipes It's sububurban, Massachusetts. He walks across the street and discovers a group of Scottish soccer fans have rented the Airbnb across the street for the World Cup. So they've derraped flags from the windows, there's one guy in a hilt and they're piping it dawn like it's the Highlands Now instead of calling the police or filing a noise complaint like a normal American would He does the most beautiful thing. He films it post it to acts and basically writes. and so it begins Well, the video gets nine million views and the next morning he's pulling into his driveway and the Sots spot him and wave him over So immediately it's hugs and backs slaps and come in for a beer By that night, he and his neighbors are hanging out with this group And they started what's up chat. And the next day, the Scottish guys show up at his house for breakfast, carrying gifts for his wife and his kids. like hats, candy, a Scottish flag that is now flying outside this man's home in Wakefield, Massachusetts It gets better A Scottish woman named Helen McDonald sees the whole thing go viral, reaches out and buys him a ticket to Scotland's next World Cup match against Morocco So he puts on a tart and scarf and says, I'm going to fake it until I make it. Now he's been on Good Morning Britain The Red Sox hosted Helen at Fenway in return And meanwhile, the Tartan Army, which is what the Scottish bands call themselves, have essentially taken over the entire city of Boston They drank the Sam Adams tap room dry They need in emergency beer deliveries. It's unbelievable. It's just one of those stories that reminds you what sports are supposed to be You show up for a game and you leave with a friendship and that's the whole point And speaking of international fandom and what happens when cameras capture something real about a community people didn't know they wanted to be part of. that brings me to today's guest and today's show Thrilled to have Christosa back We have been talking each season about America Sweetheart's Dallas Cowboy cheheerladers On Netflix and the new season dropped on the sixteenth, All seven episodes. And if you haven't started it yet, clear your evening because it's a great show to binge watch. For anybody who doesn't know, America Sweethearts is the Netflix doocu series from an Emmy award winning team that goes behind the scenes of the Dallas Cowboys Chillitterers. And I don't mean behind the scenes in this fluffy access journalism kind of way This show gets into the audition process, the cuts, the ruling training camp, the politics of who gets on The emotional toll of performing at this level, the pay, all of it And understand why the show hit the way it did, you have to understand the institution The DCC has been around since the early nineteen sixties. They started out as a co end group called the Cowbells and Bow And if you can believe it, using high school students tole cheers at the cotton bowl But in the early seventies, Cowboy president Tex Shram had a vision. He'd seen a performer named Bubbles Cash, That was her actual name, walk down the stands at a game carrying cotton candy in a short skirt And the crowd absolutely went wild. So we realized the entertainment value was enormous. So we brought in a New York choreographer named Taxi Waterman. shhifted the squad to an all adult women, redesigned the uniforms into that now iconic blue crop top. white hot pants and white cowboy boots and turned the sideline into a stage and that was nineteen seventy two. And what happened next was a cultural phenomenon By nineteen seventy six, CBS was shooting close ups of the Trillitterers during Super Bowl tenen the so called honey shots and the country forgot that there was a football game happening And then of course, their nineteen seventy seven poster outsold Ferrah Fawood. So they have become iconic. Then from two thousand six to twenty twenty one, they had making the team on CMT, sixteen seasons, the network's longest running show which gave fans this annual ritual of then watching the audition process So when CMT canceled it, a lot of people thought it was the end of the DCC on TV, and that's when Netflix came in. It has become huge Huge hit for the network The show won the Critics Choice Documentary Award for Best Sports Documentary. it earned an Emmy nomination And the reason it connected is the same reason the best documentary storytelling always does. It's really about people. It's not always about the cheerleader. it's about the cost. want something so badly. It's about perfection and sisterhood and institutional power and whether the system that built you is the same system that can break you down So here we are in season three and Chris watched the first, I guess four episodes. Of course, I watch all of them in like two days because I'm crazy person And if you are going love this show as much as we do that you're going to love this episode. So here is my interview with Chris Hello from I'm on the East coast. You're on the West cooast. We're We're trading spaces is what we're doing. We're trading ples. Did you ever watch that home renovation show? Yeah. Trading spaces? I did Did you ever think that you would want to do that show No We can need her I'm good, I think I feel like Hilde Santa Tamas would get my house and destroy it. and I would have to pretend on screen that I was happy with it. But it would be like one wall would be fur and the other one would have like spikes. And they like this was made out of like corn husks. And then and you'd be like, okay? Yeah Yeah, I know. And then remember the host, Paige Davis? Honestly, I don't. I'm not gonna lie to you It was like so long ago, but yeah, that was my first foray into the home improvement space I just Those shows kind of give me agita. But anyway, suffice to say, I'm on the East Coast in Maryland and you are in California and we are all topsy turvy here Yeah, we really are our time zones are are fucked up. Where like Like the two of us are not on the right wavelength with each other, let alone, yeah U Our girls are back I amm happy that although I'm in California, I'm really in Texas Your hearts in Texas. I. Yeahah, yeah I was there a couple weeks ago and Having now watched the show, it does make sense how into The cowboys and the Dask she learular dancers people get because It does feel like a city where everybody's obsessed with whatever the sports team is doing. And I I kind of like that. I like that. When I like us finding out that now like the people love like like our girls are getting more recognition than like any cowboys player I'm going ask for that. Yeah. do you find that pisses off Jerry Jones? Probably. I'm good. Right? Good. And I'm like, good, it should You know What do you think Charlotte Jones is feeling now? Oh God, the lizard woman She thinks she's thrilled that they're in a position where they have more money or that she had to give them more money. I feel that this season is like an apology for them having to give them like for like them using the show as a platform to like give them more money. For real. For real. for real. It's like all about Kelly and Judy Yes. which like I'm I'm at peace with them for the most part, but like It's not about the, you know, there's about it's about a few girls, but like, Our OGs are nowhere to be found in this show. Nowhere to be found. And I'm upset about it. Okay Thank you for bringing this up so so far, so quickly into this because I typically think with like realal Housewoys for example, like give me new people all the time. I don't want to hear about the same people over and over and over again. And this is so on the opposite spectrum. Yeah. where you meet a couple new girls and then You never see them again. like Abby from last season, the girl from Ohio State who had been lifting weights in college and then ended tolivering it out. Like where is she And from what I understand on social media, I think that she's got like a real fun life. I think she goes on lots of dates with people that are very famous. Why are we not seeing any of that Why are we not? I want to check in with like, remember the leader from like season one, the girl with the dark hair that was like, K Kelsey? Why aren't we just popping in with her? She's supped to have a baby. I know I saw. I saw it on Instagram. She's like so pregnant. I'm like Can't we just see like O OG girls like at her like Baby shower? I know, I would like love to see them doing like a whole dance routine just for the baby Yeah It's just se just to pop in Okay, the other thing be overarching thing is Rese. Where is Rese? What's going on with Reeese? And in the top the top of the episodes, you're feeling it like She's the favorite I think they don't want them to be too famous. I don't think they do either. wrote because I wrote my first note is Oh Brother with the beginning of the season being Reis doing a modern lyrical dance. I wass like, hereere we fucking go. And then you don't see Hyd nor Har ofver while you do it later in the episodes. Did you see any of the later episodes? I got to the point where they finally have the team So I think that's like episode five. So like we get to like we have, we have the team and then at the very end of it, they're like, Judy's like cracking down. She's like, all right, now that you're in this, like time to really actually work, you little bitches. and then they're like shake it in their boots, you know their Luesy boots. If you if you will. I do I do want you to spend some time looking frame by frame at all of the scenes with Rehese and her husband becausecause I had some initial concerns that they were very young getting married and maybe he wasn't the right partner for her. And then I spend some time this season thinking, no, maybe he is great for her. because she's sort of They're both sort of dorky in a in like a Alabama small town kind of way. Simple. simimple and So they're kind of fished out of water actually in Dallas And But Reef has become a major influencer because of this show. Yeah Will has had to quit his job at the at the parts company Power washer company. Yeah a power washer company. He's like, ye, well, yeah, he's like My wife's famous. Why am I doing? Why am I like Rotating lug nuts. I don't mean to be you know what I mean? Like he's like, I don't mean need to be renting renting a power washer to like some like You know, Betty Bowling alley over here But then he became our manager I know well that I mean typical. And then they have to make Typical Hollywood story as. toally. They have to make these videos where they're making, you know the salad dressings and Deviled eggs So there are scenes where you can see she's starting to resent him and They go on a walk together and she doesn't want to hold his hand. He says, Do you want to hold hands? And she says, No, it's too hot out. I don't want to do that The Refs of season one would have Obviously steering onto his hand. I think that there's some trouble in paradise I also just think like She's like, I don't you all like what what do we need to do here? You know what I mean Do you think that's more she's sick of filming a show? I probably not sick of filming the show, but she doesn't need to perform as much as she did before. Do you know what I mean? If She's probably more comfortable with filming And she's probably just like, yeah, they're just to follow us. Like what am I? I don't need to be like God's chosen child again, you know what I mean? Well, that makes me wonder if she's a people pleaser. And she felt like she I think so. And I think so. Yeah, ye I remember when I was a kid and we would have like a substitute teacher, you know, like everybody does at some point. and then the substitute teacher' professor or whatever would come in to evaluate them And I would want to do them a solid I would never discuss it with a substitute teacher, but I was like, eyeball to eyeball L like I got your back. And so when when they're professor would come in, I would go over the top with raising my hand. and acting like I was super interested in whatever they were teaching with the hope that they would get some sort of extra credit because I'm insane. That to me is Reese Reese is like, I'm going to sell the shit out of the Dallas Cowboy shoelitterers for you. And then maybe what you're saying is true that by season three, she's like, I have I don't have a I did in the tank. No, she's like, I did it And she knows she's going to be the number one main one and she's in her fifth year. She knows she's going to be the like, you know what I mean? when they like announce the like the leaders, she's going to be number one. No, she doesn't come back. What? Yeah So this is the last we see of her She got an ankle injury at the end of the season. like a sprain ankle and she had to dip out. But the overarching feeling she's having is she can't take the social media pressure. So in the beginning, it's like, who's your favorite? Reese, Reese, Reese. And then you see her in her home in Frisco, and she's got all these blankets around her And she's just like, I this is a lot O husband quit her quit his job for the social media. So that's u yeah Okay, I'm glad because my second note is, I love how the beginning of this is discussing the double edgeed sort of unscripted fame And like I thought that's what the whole season was going to be about is like now that these girls are like huge superstars, what it like what is it life like? which it's not what it's about for the first five episodes which I'm upset about. That was disappointing. They wait way too long to get into that. That's interesting. That makes another season. like I didn't really need to watch four episodes of like them continuing to talk about the new girls and like their hair Which I have a type forty five on what's wrong with everyone's hair because it was driving us crazy when we were watching it Yeah. They do show them on the bus where they're, you know, they perform And then they're all looking through their social media feeds and checking the hashtags. It's a montage. I need it to be more Yeah. mean I have to say, I even dipped into a little of the social media to see what's up, what's up. There are a lot of people who probably have never danced a day in their life who've got solid opinions about their technique. That must drive them insane. When they're talking about like, oh yeah on Reddit, they all say this, this and this and whenever they do talk about it a little bit, but I want to like see more of it Well, I want to see the person on Reddit, who's commenting on the technique. likeike get me a shot of that person. Have they ever danced before? Everyone's in their life? Yeah. Meanwhile, they're like these insane athletes like you can like go seriously screw off. Well, that's like when the one girl the Australian girl, the kiwi is like getting yelled out about her social media And Kelly and Judy are like this photo And she just goes No of that's a screenshot of like me dancing That's a video. actually, that's a screenshot of a video. So like, I would never post that picture And they're all like Okay. And you know that they want her to be like I'm horrified. Like what? Like I'm so sorry. Like I'm so sorry I'm so sorry Bolva. And she's like, no, that's actually, I didn't post that picture. That's actually some someone else took that from my Instagram and like made it look like that's a picture I posted That's actually not me at all, but like, Thank you for the concern That was a getab Well she tellelly does say publicly like this whole social media stuff, it's like completely new to her. is going to change the way people perceive the show, but also the way they are choosing the dancers. I mean, they do say in the beginning, this was the first season where you see candidates that are the result of Watch a show. Yeah Hence why faith has flown another continent. Well that's I said that while we were watching it and Flee was like, oh, youre you're so right. because I was like, they love that she's from like the other side of the world. so they can be like, Girls fly from all over the world to come be a part of Dallas Cubature. You know what I mean? And so I was like, she's gonna get in And not that she doesn't deserve it because she's a really good dancer and her Her being able to like twist her like, that way kind of that way that way. It was a jarring. I didn't I know it was. I didn't either It's good for her to be a performer. but I was like, what, I was like even if she was bad, they would put her in because she like they they're like jizzing their pants over the fact that like some girl from the other side of the world in a different hemisphere Yeah although I think they I think they come I think that's a double edged sword though, because When that happens, you don't have I think they like the girl that grew up in Texas and it was always her dream. hundred percent. hundred percent. So when she's like, yeah, that's a screenshot. you know, I do this and I do that, they're like,, no, no, no, that's not the way We do it here in Texas. Yeah, like you need to repent. And she's like, Well, no I don't. She's like, for what? For someone else doing something that has nothing to do with me? Yeah For me being a victim of a social media crime? Yeah But you're right, they do have more power than they ever did before God bless Jada for all that she did and Harlie did a lot last season too. Where is she? She didn't make a team? I don't know. But even when we have our Ana Kates getting like nominated and stuff like that, I'm like, why are they're not even following any? But here's the thing. I think that they are following all of them And But then like They don't use it We do have our thing of like Kally and Charlie in there some friends and they're like eating everything. and they're like, Oh my God, it's wed whenever we're like, Okay, like we're done practicing. Let me like go to social media and like all the social media stuff was about me It's like trying out again like that. was interesting and they're clearly filming them Yes But it's like they just choose the stories that they. I mean, much like all television They choose what's like coming to the forefront for the episode, but like It's really not about our OG girls and I'm sad. build these why build these stars to not at least pop in with them once an episode? Well, Anna Kate, they show her at the end of the season, but they have her reading through social media and she's talking about how it's overwhelming for her. I'm sure. And then another dancer sis to Kelly, you got to check in on Anna Kate. L she's not doing well You know, these s are like, you don't deserve to be on the team. Okaykay, well, she did make the team. So What do you want? It's really bad They're already like the first two seasons were us like truly being like horrified by what these girls have to go through to become a Dallas Cupbach cheerleader. And then to think that that then goes onto an international scale Yeah. of every person who's not even real Mhm Not, you know what I mean? Someone that's not even real or like ome morbidly obese person that like has never left their house. Right. And that's what it is. It's like, here's why Anicate shouldn't be on the team. And by the way, they had up the full time jobs and dance in season one and now you have even more. And then I read that Kelly said that Dua Lpa came to a game and love the cheerleaders So she was performing the next night and had them perform Stop with her Yeah which is like amazing, but also like again, another layer of like, oh my God, now I'm like with an international pop superstar and I' on stage on stage. Also had to learn the routine in like in fifteen minutes So they have full time jobs too be fair do a like Famously, they make fun of Dueliba for being a bad dancer. so I don't think that the don't you they was too tough have blast ack in the day when she was first coming on the scene like with like Um One kiss is all it takes.. She did like, they called it the C opener dance where she just let I like popped her hip and like would just ask me, she'll show you. M, I will show you it Oh, I thought you meant like she just zippers like, I would do that on stage. just zipping up and down your top. Basically it was basically that and then it was like It was just like a bad choreographer that like it was it was bad. Now she's much better, but like o yeah Well, I mean, all these singers, they're expected to have these complex dance routines too, which is insane. And some of them aren't dancers. L sorry you're not so.ome people aren't dancers.s not every To dance like a karaoke joint, like I can't do it. You we do steperobics. I don't know If they were talking about a residency, like a Vegas residency for these girls would be really smart I know But again, how much are they paid? I'm h worried I know what I know but I want them to have the money. But that makes the most sense because I just again, full time jobs still have to do all of this. So they have two full time jobs. Yeah But again, their full time job when they're not doing this could be Vegas the America Sweet Hearts Vegas show. I'll see him in Cesar'salace. Does that come on the old older Yeah, the girls are come back. Yeah. wouldouldn't that be funine I bet the chillers of the seventies are like, I'll just come back and do a hot number too. That Don't give me we're gonna get to Dayton's mom. Wea we'll get. Oh my God But okay, here's the argument we were having Flee Fasana, who I'm staying with right now. Legendary casting director. Legendary When she's like, Well, when I casted the Re worldor season one, we had to pay them for their life rights. And I was like, that was forty years ago. So like we got in the big fight being like, I was like We I am positive that none of them are being paid to be on the show I don't think so either. It's a documentary. Like they' just following them. And I said it's a conflict of interest for them to that for them to be paid. That's right. according to again be shouldh they be making all the money in the world off this?
