This week it's the turn of two thousand two's Resident Evil, an adaptation of the survival horror video game that spawned a series of actually quite successful films, despite never really being that good, kind of like fast and the Furious, but with zombies instead of cars Did the first movie convince us, however, Is the liquor actually scary? And just who is Mila Govovic supposed to be? I' your host, Rob Pearson and we are joined today by David Jackson. Hello. Hello Nathan Diter. Hello, We are rounding out at least our first wave of video game adaptation movies with two thousand two's resesident Evil starring Milaoovich Directed by Paul W S. Anderson, who for Captains and commanders will be Rembered from our Mortal Combat episode, never forgotten. Yes. so as as is has been tradition for this series, we'll start with a little Recap on our history with the games first U Ri probably the series that of all of the movies we've watched so far the one that we have most experience with, Dave, what's your Resident evil experperienceQuite a lot actually, surprising even myself. Not so much with the original games, so Rident Evil I never owned. My friend had it and I remember distinctly going around to his one day and him and his brother. making a big joke about me playing the game. They were like let me just just have a go.ll have a go at the final boss. We'll just set it up. and I just watched them go into a save room everything but a knife into the storage box. I just set up for you. They thought it was hilarious. How? I guess I was twenty ten. Yeah But never played. It always seems terrifying They said it was terrifying and you know, I knew from an early age that I was not a brave man Did I did rent Wereas an evil too? And I think I spent about an hour playing that, found it slightly difficult and again too scary. so just that's. That's all that I got out of that one and then just didn't return to the series until The remakes started coming around, specifically Resie I remake, which Nith, I remember you and I went on a on a day into London to play the game. U for the first time. in like a sort of it was a very cool location actually, it was very He was very RCPD styled. You've got the look on your face like you have no idea what I'm talking about. It's amazing that that's come through onto my face because I was remembering two things which is They did a thing in the market where they had a human body made out of like that was Ri six, I think for Rie six. That was absolutely horrible. And it was during EGX And they did an activation, that's quite a. word Ive just used activate which was they just created like a human body out of itual animal meat. It was the shape of a human body. a pork pie because' some jelly around it too. Yeah. And it wasn't just a human body. there were all kinds of human organs that have been like molded And I just I can remember now the smell The smell was not nice. D you go to that Rob? No. It was in London in like a covered market I didn't go to that note. notot good. That was for Resi six, I think I remember playing Ready two at a trade show So I don't remember this event necessarily. Yeah, it was just we basically played a middle section, the mrter X section of Resy too. Well we did like a let's play It is probably on the channel. of this section where we were chased, we were hunted by Mr. X through RCPD. And it was terrifying, but brilliant. and I I realized I ed to know a bit more And and So that was my entry point back into the series. And since then I went back and played Resident Evil remake, the first game remake Which is much more true to the original. It's still like the fixed cameras And the one that originally came out on GameCube and then came out of PlayStation four. I don't know Right and I couldn't get through that. I found it too scary. That game is really? Yeah. I think it's the fixed camera angles. It just wears you down like I I found myself playing for shorter and shorter sort of like stints and just being like, I can't I can't keep coming back here. I just don't know if I can and it's a tough game as well. But then all the others, two, three, four. And now and also village and Requiem, I've finished all of them. I was going to say in a way the newer games, even though there's so much more going on terms of I Gameplay and looks and imagination There is something about the accessibility of new games which probably stops them from being as scary as the old games Yeahah, I think that's I do think that's true. Like moving from a fixed camera angle instantly, I think makes things a little bit more Um, palatable a little less scary because fixed camera angles are just mean, but then also just the controls as well. there's nothing like king you know, across the sort of the camera change point of a room when you've been able to hear a noise and you're like, what is it? and it suddenly cuts, and you see the thing and you like are desperately trying to turn around You know, like, but you end up walking forward slightly towards the thing and just let t control necessarily reveal the thing you hope it will. No, exactly. but then you're not able to quickly move in the direction you want to move. in that corner and I can't face it. It is all quite scary. but yeah, so quite a lot of Ri for me I played Rzi I a little bit at University againgain with Matthew Elliot and it was kind of rather than So games were like part of a wider sort of group of things that we were doing and interested in, I guess, like So it was as much about like we watched all of the Romero movies. Matt was like super into horror and so we watched yeah, we watched all of those and it was more like and these games are kind of part of that or U hugely influenced by that. And at the same time there were like swirls of rumors about this film that George Romero was in the running to make it. so it was kind of like just zombies movies having a moment and I guess on the back of there's an episode of space, which maybe you've mention on the podcast last time Well, I mentioned the Tombaider one, there's also a resident evil one where I think Tim just stays up and then imagines his house being full of zombies and he's shooting them And and then she one of the dead. so kind of like all of a similar moment. So I didn't gets super into the games. I enjoyed them. I've got way more into sideil and Hill, which arere basically playing at the same time. Um, and I and then like I think three was weirdly the one that we play we hired from all days in crooks and in Sheffield and played all the way through. and never I never thought it was that good. I thought it was fine. reallyally fucking hated Nemesis obviously. You weird used to say before Rosie was probably born We used to say stars in voice. I mean, I guess a lots of people play that game did the same thing. And then yeah, the modern ones didn't play R resident ev before. And I just it was always like a weird point of contention People I was working in the industry by that point and people would say you' got to play that game. The game's amazing. It was on GameCube and I was a PlayStation purist and U I guess didn't play it for four years between two thousand four and two thousand eight, Deadpace came out and I fell in love with Dadspace instead, which is Basically a lot of the same ideas but in a setting I prefer. so I've still never played Rident E before any of the remakes or anything. Just to set you back a little further, it does feel like the one you'd enjoy the most maybe just because there's it's much more about shooting than it is about interesting. Cerving. Yeah, although I know Serving is difficult. It is like it is scary. I love the atmosphere of of the original PS one games, I guess. and I've dipped into the new ones I think I played six all the way through R, what about you The worst one The worst' one all the way through. Oh Is that right? You wouldn't like Ril, I don't think? I think you'd like it. I didn't play any of the original trilogy I was too scared and too young I played Dino Crisis though when that came out and really liked that, but never graduated to the actual reszies. The first one I played was Reesi four wasn't very good at it. O PS two. o. Yeah. and Yeah, I was always aware of it. It's like this massive massive cultural thing that everyone loved. I didn't really have any friends that played it either. so the first three games passed me by and then obviously through the job that we do eventually went B Cup. I've played all of them. I've finished only four though. fourour's the only one I've finished U of the old one, off the yes Five and six are in the middle then that we haven't even talked about. Five I did play a lot of five. I loveved the Mercenaries mode in five, I remember. There was a big hype around five, I remember, because it was, you know, following on from one of the greatest games of all time. Yeah. Wasn't it C op for the first time as well? Isas it five thates? A five anwer. C op. have there's like Chris Redfield And Sva Shiva, who's the other character you can play as. I can't rememberether it's an actual carp or not there. Or is it more like you can have an AI companion who's sort of like there like, you know, I just seem to remember there was puzzle solving or you need someone on the other side of a thing to throw a switch, that kind of stuff. But maybe that's not c op. It's funny that one's recent enough recent enough, holy shit it's twenty years old, but I remember the conversations people were having in the office about it And it coming in and everyone ye, all the excitement about it being the follow up to four, all of the oh, this isn't really what we thought it was going to be. But then some people just It happens all the time with games now persisting with it and going, actually there's some stuff in here which is quite interesting. Yeah But people talk about the pIS filter, right? withith five? The pIS filter. Like it's just got that specific area yellow. Yeahah, it's got that kind of visual overlay Piss over me I've not heard that before, but I can see what you mean. It's got like a greasy grimy sheen to it. I thought it looked amazing at the time, Resi five. Resi six. I remember thinking, oh, this is just you play as loads of characters in Rie sixix quite have the magic. and then Resy seven came along and changed everything again. Yeah That's how we where we are with the sort of new modern strend. I've still not played any of requum So So my peers five ready to go. I really want to play it. Five and six are a weird little just cold asack are't they? They are. Would we get seven without and like the series willing to just do weird stuff get off in I think Resy five and six are like the latter The latter Brosn and Bond movies where it all just went shape. And then Resi seven is like Casino where I am where the Capcom Rub is like, o, we need to we need to start again everyone and they made it. Ecept they've just had hit after hit after hit since then. seven, eight, nine and remakes of two, three and four. The original just is an ammo for the version of Reie which is now The dominant one. What about codeen Veronica? I've never played that. was that a dream cast? Weve tried that well I' I played on Pce too, but right Again, just hired. I heard that was great though. likeike people loved that one I think at the time But I've not played it. We should talk about the movie, which interestingly comes out after the initial PS one trilogy. So Resident Evil in ninety six, Resident Evil two in ninety eight Residentil three neemesis in nineteen ninety nine And then there's a big gap to Resident Evil four, which doesn't come out until two thousand four In between that time, obviously, the game that was originally supposed to be resident four became Devil May Cry, which came out in two thousand one on PS two. But this movie two thousand two. So we are like halfway between Residident evil three and resesidident evil four at this point. Yeah like a big sort of black hole in terms of the games. Code Veronica is out two thousand. Code eronica two in two thousand one But Rei fans, they're waiting for the next actual resesident evil. And along comes this Movie in two thousand two and Star with with none of the actual main characters in it I remember distinctly watching this film. I think I saw it at the cinema withith enough of an understanding of the series, I didn't have when you speak to people who love the original reses and you mention any of that those original like Leon, Chris, whatever, they go they go when that new trailer came out for that new one, this is how much I've been paying attention to the Resi games. then I can do this right. Resident Evil Requem has got Leo or Chris in it, Chris Leon. Leon. how much I didn't get a code, right? So fuck everyone And everyone went nuts and they were holding it back as a moment for a specific like trader drop and all of that. so this film, like all those characters have always had that Cache And I was watching this like screen gems movie. So it's kind of not total bullshit this film. And like I think from the films that we've watched We're not in the era of the street fighter where you're looking at people going, you're really supposed to be that guy. Yeah really and Javovich is like a Kind of the fifth element was huge Yeah for peopleeople of our age, young age But I was watching the film I remember the first time around just going, are you going to become one of the people in especially the amnesiac characters It's like are you supposed to be one of And I was quite annoyed. They make a point of not saying her name as well. as in It was my understanding that the other the rest of the team know who she is Um And at one point They're talking about her behind her back and theyall they refer to her as the other one whichich you just wouldn't do if you know someone's name. you know, like and I thought, oh, this is because it's a whole thing. I was like, this is quite poorly done U But not only she doesn't get named throughout the whole movie I'm not sure if her name is in the credits. But I know thats she's not a character, Is Alice. I knowew it from the late movie. I knew that her name was Alice, but I get noticed. They haveven not she said her name in this film. They don't say it And I think I read that they don't say it in any of the movies. It's only ever in the credits. and so she is known it's known that she's Alice but she's a brand new character. But it's just a strange thing to do because you're also her like outfit is extremely Um like It just feels like you're based on someone. it's a bit Aida Wong. Aid Wong is it? But it's not obviously because she's not, well, she's not she isn't Aida Wong. So it's just like it's a strange one. It's that they do they kind of set you up for the whole movie thinking just who is it? Who is this person? And it's actually just a completely new invention. I watched it this time with an eye on whether it's like a how consistent with or compatible with the kind of video games it is and I guess in a way, like the film's first decision is we're not just going to tell the story of the game which is a disappointment to many, kind of disappointing to me. and the way it's funny, but it's not then It doesn't do anything which stops the game from being true, I don't think. Maybe like the motivations for umbrella quite the same. and it focuses on umbrella. Umbrella is like the big thing. there is an outbreak, there is a raccoon city and there is an umbrella. So the game be happen the games could be happening kind of around what's happening in this movie then becausecause it's successful because it's successful with Alice is the main character is's kind of like from that point forward, you cannot then like around. You're on a sort of path Yeah you kind of have to follow. Although sometimes movies don't, they just go, ye, we're just reset. But but I guess it's like it's I don't know, it's like an interesting kind of third way of doing stuff. It isn't just like the mario let's just take these characters and make them completely fucking different because we don't really care about games. and it isn't let's just slavishly make movie version of this game. it's something else I don't know. know if you guys hate it. I felt like it was before people worried as much as they do now about universes and canons and yeah. Where is this like there'd be a whole sort of But where is it Where does it sit? What part the story is it from? It because Chris Redfield exist in this world. And people' doing an impression about me on this podcast? impression of just my a straw man perception of the audience Yeah getting getting confused about And it's just, I guess it's just another's just another vision of Rident Eil, is it? I I've already seen this film once before R remember being quite underwhelmed by it, but much the same as with Tomb Rider. I just enjoyed my time watching this. I didn't go going with big expectations. I really like the corridor laser scene. Yes You may have loved that scene. I was thinking about you as that scene as on. Oh, so good It's so memorable. It is I mean, I really the only thing I remember just a bit of that woman's like, o my Godd. Is she? o my god a head's full off. Right. Oh his hand just his fingers is just, you know, quite bad. Colin Salmon are poor Colin. Well, he has that, he's so good. He is He great. He's great. Do you think Mate just Go right to the end. just step back a couple of steps Yeah he's like inches away from being There's that horrible moment when you first watch it, where you're like A you right? I still disintegrates. Oh, poor Colin. I was I was W watching this with my wife who just said, if that wanted to be a security thing, why didn't it just do the net laser all the time? hundred percent C it It's having fun. Yeah. Yeah It's a mo. It's evil. just the movie Alice sorry, not Alice, the Red C's having fun I don't know that the Queen has fun. Oh, she does. Later on, she's like, I was in a bad bad girl a bad bad girl. And she also deliberately says she's been saving the liquor. That's true. For saving that. Yeah. for the end. My I'm not sure for I'm not certain I've seen this movie before. I think I have. I can't remember much about it. But it wouldn't have been when it came out, it would have been a few years later. But I used to watch loads and loads of music TV and u The song that plays over the creditits is My Plague by Slipknot. had a video that just had loads of clips from the movie in it And it was quite a good video actually. It was sort of like they kind of compared the mosh pit to to a zombie horde. and they would like cut between the film and this like gig and it seemed quite It worked quite well, but anyway, it just had all the best scenes And the laser scene is like say for the sort of breakdown bit where he I just remember it so well. He like where he jumps, that guy jumps You know, he tries to jump over it and it goes up with him and it just cuts him in half. And the look on the look on his face. just and I just It's indelibly linked with this particular part of this song for me, which I loved this song as well. It reminds me of like Is it like Super Meat Boy? or things like Super Meat Boy? like rage bait games that watch little bits of where they anticipate what you're going to do and they change the level of. I'm really hoping that I can describe it well enough that one of our audience members will be able to tell me what it's called, but there's a game like that which I remember watching on YouTube and it's just so funny. Yeah, just so funny. like really basic looking two D platformer Yeah And it's just everything you would think to do. the gy's like, nope Noope, no, no. But the cool thing the funny thing about this for me is This is we fac things like this in video games before. We're like, o died, I'll learn that the laser does that next time. So instead of jumping it, you duck under it but unfortunately If it was for the man for the man, he he can't he's not played a video game in his real life. so he's got wild lifeife and he's dead. Yeah T Another connection with the I think I've seen this like picked up on either social media or maybe as IDB, but Colin Salmon being in this and he plays Dror Moon in the Doctor Wh episode of Science in the library, which I can't remember. we did watch, right? We watch it Yeah part of the b like it. And But the story of the att the center of the library is very similar to the Red Queen. is a family member who has been placed inside a computer running a facility. Yeah. It's just funny. What Is it that Katherine Takes face says over and over again Um remember something about people being say, still saying that Don't D'tor Oh yeah. We all belong outside. Come see our knowledgeable salespeople to help get you the right air conditioner today No longer in the library Something like that. thingy. What's her name? D Dononna Nol. Dononna Noble has been saved Literally saved like on a computer. So did everyone enjoy it this time around? I enjoy myself. No. No. No. Not really. I've seen really when I was like doing more film reviews in the earlier part of my writing career and one of the things I would do is like DVD reviews for games mags or sometimes DVD mags when DVD mags were a thing. And so I've seen looads of these, they're like a real spine of and the kind of thing that people would get me to write about because I knew a little bit about video games. So I've like dipped in and out of this series and it's like we sometimes talk about things like fast and Furious just series which You wouldn't expect to, but just grab hold of an audience and then actually sometimes increase like their takings every film. And this is very much one of them. So I'm sort of broadly affectionately disposed towards this series and it's sort of insane that it's kept going I just thought that the human performances in this film were really terrible. And all of them. Pretty much, you know, James Purefooy, I Yeah Yeah I've got a lot of time for James Ser. I think which one does he? He's the bad guy. Spence. Spence, yees. Spence. goodness. I couldn't I don't I don't know what I've seen him in before. I recognizeed him, but I just at some point thought he looked like, is it Nick Nulty Nick Nolty Maybe it's not Nick Nolty, Nick who's that guy, the TV guy? I know who you're thinking about I' see what. Nick Nolty's in like another twenty four hours. N And he's also no Fucuckking hell nate It's forty eight hours. Okay. And the first one is Nick Knowlesool Nick Knowles Nick Knowles, you're thinking of. Oh N there he is. Oh no, Nick Knowles from o. From Telly. Fr Telly. Yeah. sixty three years old, No, Nick Knowles. Yeah.. He's tried to have a career in music. And I could just I just that just amused me. I just kept thinking it was Nick Knowles. he in Davis Purefer is in Well loads of really good British movies and some bad in the Nuies. He's in film, which is set in Rochester Castle. like about the historic siege of Rochester Castle. Okay, which I'm sure we all know about. Yeah no needs to going into. King John's war against the Barons and I think the Barons are holding the castle and King John's forces.'s It's the square Norman Ke. Oh good. Rochester Castle. Right. And you used to be a tour guide there. I didn't. I just love it. I've just you were a tour guide somewhere, whereere were you a tour? Chathamistoric. com. Not the castle, not Rach. notot castle. It's a different part of the river entirely. They Anyway they tunnelled underneath one of the towers on the corner of the Kep and they propped it up with extremely strong wood and then laid the corpses of it's like there's a specific number. It's like forty two really fat pigs. because they burn extremely hot burn all the fat supports toer came down. That's great. That's in the film, which is called Iron Shanks. I mean that's very cool It is cool I see it is cool. And when they re a tactic Yeah. I mean, it just Hear me out. L I's in that's what the guy saying is that the plan. Hear me out, rightight? This is going to work. This is going to work. Wh not just that if you're in the castle, you're going I think we're fucked, but God So this smells on. He smells at Yeah. This is our doom And when they rebuilt the castle, which they did in the decades afterwards, they rebuilt the tower round because I think it's harder to ha to undermine a round tower. Yeah. Pig fat can't melt round towers. Exactly. If you want to You got to knock down a castle? You've got to knock down some castle. that just reminded me of Sean Locke singing the tpeworm song. Where this? No I don't know the tapeworm s talking about that you can you get tapeworm for pork. Oh I didn't know that. They were just the cadeness of where you said the last sentence right. Okay. he's there singing. You could only get a tape word for support. Then the producers say that you can actually get it from Bef as well. A. that's yeah. But he's in that film and he's in maybe more talk to this kind of genre film. He's in a movie called Solomon Solomon Cane, I think it is, which is a bit of a he's just like a badass A meanain guy whoseoul' like a comic book adaptation which I saw recently at the Forbidden Wales Festival last year, which I talk about all the time in Bristol, and Jame Pureford was there. just seems like one of those guys who was there He did in Q and. Yeah, it did a Q andish cool. And he's he's from the West country because he was on this morning and there's a I can't remember her name, but the blonde lady he does this morning now. she's got a very strong West countountry accent and then his accent came out and they were just talking about it. And then he actually teared up a little bit and I was like, oh no, it' James Puref an alcoholic. Why is he crying on television? But he was just like, I don't get to hear the accent much. It's really nice toar It was a lovely moment. And he just seemed so He's got that look of he must be around sixty now, an extremely handsome man who just seems happy. Yeah. J just happy to talk about this movie that you made in Budapestol, wherever it was, Romania. Yeah know I know' de pested in hungry. Yeah, he didn't mention Nick Knowles, but I imagine it was on his mind. I reckon Nick Knowles mentioned James Purefoy.. K of like Hollywood Esemblance, isn't it? I could been I could have been in Resident Evil. And this is where he's just like he's really good looking in this film U yeah, is. and 're luck enough to be evil Like he's, you know what I mean? Like he's got good he's maybe not good looking enough to be a genuine hero, but as soon as he was I revealed these's evil I was like yeah, trucks. that's exactly. It's interesting that youd say that all the performananceces are bad because I think you're right But I didn't think that until you said it. And it's almost like the badness kind of suits the movie. It's like, Yeah, ag You know it's like say they're being faithful to the source material Yes, I mean, that ever heard a good acting performance at a Resident evil game? That is a weirdness of Rident evvil's probably quite quite a mean thing to say. Like it's deliberately there's like a hammy a stiltedness ridiculousness to it I think fair I think they play up to it now, obviously, but voice acting in the ninetyies in video games is very different to what it's like now. Oh yeah hundred. But also I've always wondered about the translation process as well. L are the scripts as haammy in Japanese? was I which I assume they were written in as they are, you know, or is there does the translation add something or take something away? It's interesting. like there's definitely a part of those games, the dialogue is unusual and at times funny at points when you wouldn't expect it to be funny. It is is interesting in knowing a little bit about localization And I guess most of the games that people talk about things like the Soul series and how how delicately they translate those and also like the source of like some of the wonder of those series is Mazaki talking about reading Things like Lord of the Rings and reading them in English. Only half understanding. And then but that tantalizing sense of like, oh, there's a whole world slightly behind these words that I'm not quite accessing. Yeah. and wanting to invest his games with that sense. thenen retranslating that into English and trying to get that same sense of Yeah because they all sound Similar, do' they? A. I think I see you're here doing a thing. Yes, very much so. I think translating is just mad, isn't it? How How do we even start learning other languages? How do we even start learning languages? God, I don't know. It's just crazy. I do. You you've got no internet, you've got all the time in the world.ve got you've got no TV. you're in say let's say Japan.' you're Will Adams. you're from Gillingham. and you've gone all the way to Japan. 're you may be lightly imprisoned peoplee keep pointing at stuff and then just telling you the word for it But the thing is, right? Yeah yeah, no I get that, but my son is currently learning to speak and ' been learning, obviously his whole life, I guess, I don't know. but seeeeing him like we started with a few little signs so that he could communicate us with with us sooner. and one of them is more Right And is' that just grabbing? No, that's milk you're doing. Oh this this This is more and um Did you make that up or is that? No, it's a real real It's a real one forbe sign language. Yeah. Just I realized quite soon that he would do it. It didn't mean more to him. Often it meant food, right. Sometimes it meant drink It didn't usually mean more. like now he understands it's more, but it's like pointing at a thing and saying it's a word is not enough because there's so much nuance. This is a great bit and Picard does a great bit with this in Star Trek. Actually it's Picard it's Danna Troy who has to she has to at the last minute do some negotiations in a language she doesn't speak No, and Picard's like the universal translator willll do it. And she was explaining the nuance of a thing. and she just pointed at like a cup said and made up a word for it, like Saz Bj. And she's like, what did I just say? And he was like, cup. And she was like, wasas it cup or was it tea or was it drink? or was it are you thirsty? And it was like, o God It's just crazy. I know we've done it kind of, but I feel like there is still there must still like even the best translators in the world They're having to localize. That's the thing isn't it? It's not just translate. It's like I was at a little talk yesterday for I only mentioned this earlier on. Samir Ahmed who's like a BBC journalist, who has written a book about the little BFI monograph book about Hard Dayayss Night, the Beatles moovie And I've seen that? It's a fucking great film. I've not seen it. I've always went seen. It' So good. It's like unbelievable there' it's sixty four. I think they ye, they filmed at sixty four and they're just so you just wouldn't expect them to. And I think that it is directed by a guy called Richard Lester who went on his like three musketeers and Robin and Marian with Sean Cony and For whatever reason, you'd think it would be terrible and they'd be all stilted and mad. but it's a really funny story. It's kind of like Nuveal Vaggi, like's so playful. They never say the word Beatles anywayere, I was like in the film. It's like seen a couple of times, but it's like similar to never saying Alice. but she was talking Samira Ama was talking about the the German translation and which apparently takes just huge they cannot replicate for like kids from Liverpool chat about sort of being famous sort of running and playing versions of themselves. So they just Apparently like loads of the time, they're just having conversations about films are music like and it's kind of funny and light, but it was reviewed in Germany like it reviewed well everywhere, but I think they were like, this is a real sinenyastt Wh, why are the Beles talking about all this high min and stuff? There's one bit where John is in the bath doing L just playing with a submarine talking about U boats, which apparently they call sort of semi translated herear them. justust don't worry about this bit. It's just on the phone Yeah, anyway, I just think that that's really interesting. and I would love to I'd love to know how funny or hammy the games are in As I said, I am aacho that they were written in Japanese, but the biohazard games. Yeah. As theyre called in Japan, is that right? Yeah, that's right biohazard? b. I don't know if they're called bohazard. Was't of them called Biohazard resident evil. Or is it that There is a game resident evil biohazard. I couldn't say. That is number seven Resolidential seven biohazard I did I actually really enjoyed watching this movie and I do think again it's partly the journey. For me it feels the most I think it f Tomb Rid. I think it feels better than Tomb Raider. Yeah. I think so. I just it holds it feels like a ho in a way that two Mor still felt like bits kind of sewn together a little bit Um, And I think that Two Raider was very much Can we get this character on screen Yeah like maintain her Yeah. And this is not like that. No, this is more like And that's interesting that it doesn't use any of the characters, although I think maybe Jason Isaacs is actually playing a canon character right at the end He's got a cameo. you wouldn't know unless you read the credits. Well I saw his eyes. I saw his eyes.. J Isaac. Oh J Isa. Isaac. Yes. whatas he Weska? What Yes U ye but apart from that, you know, it's more like the kind of the vibes that some of the As you said, like umbrella, Raccoon City, that stuff. they've kind of taken and they're moving that forwards, which is kind of cool. But yeah, I enjoyed it. I thought that the intro was really good. And me they wereing This is a big corporation. They do milk sweets. but really their money sure killing baby Mby. Not that bit so much. No, but I just thought the bit in the hive I love In the hive, everyone who works in the hive is twenty seven and really good looking. Yeah. I was thinking I work in the hive. L It seems like everyone's having a great time. Like when all the scientists doing the experiment and it's got like their age on a thing. and like where are the old scientists? Where are the people who know loads of stuff they' hot wanted fresh perspectives in the hive. They're all wise and they're like, o don I'm not going down there No chance. maybe that's it. I wondered like I was enjoying thinking about the whole thing. like did that I guess they went on that train, they went through the mansion to get on the train Did everyone know that they were underground? Was there you know, were they sort of tricked into it? Buty anyway, I really liked the intro, the setup. I thought that the scenes in the lift were truly quite terrifying. The idea of like hearing another lift car fall Right next to yours and the screams like I thought it was like really quite. And just the whole idea of just if you're in that sort of lab situation and an alarm goes off That is scary shit. I mean, those situations exist in our actual world where people are working with deadly diseases and things And like You know, they must You're a coronavirus truther. What's gonna to come out? No, I'm just saying, I just think it is that is that is a scary idea and and You know, they're locked down. they all are like, notothing's wrong. We're all innocent. Let us out. And you know, just I think it's a horrible situation, which was quite well realized. I really enjoy the quite nineties, even though this is now nies like hud on all the cameras, which is just ridiculous. Like I don't know who is supposed to be ingesting that information apart from the Red Queen, but you know, it's just like where it's like we need information like zooming in on guns and stuff and people's names and like Pulse rate and what's the makeup of the a terminator really, isnt it? like Yeah Or even before that, but I guess Westworld compomputers haven't really gone in that direction or CCTV, unfortunately. We don't get as. People walking around wearing metag glasses. That's true. Then watchdogs came along in two thousand eight That's true. I guess I guess you buy meta glasses if you werere a really big fan of this movie or maybe watchatchdogs. W watchatch Do doogs? No it wasn't two thousand No, Watchdogs was twenty fourteen No, eight Ohest, it was goingt be a school game. Yeah I'm trying pinning it on the wrong generation. Yeah But yeah, I thought the setup is really good and like the I like the kind of amnesac storytelling ish, that the little bits that you slowly start piecing together as you go throughout the movie I thought was quite nice and And then just the rest of it kind of ticks along quite nicely. There's like one really slow scene where where Nick Knowles is revealed to be evil It was like this scene is really dragging. But apart from that, I thought I think it's sort of quite kind of ips along I was there. I was there for it. I enjoyed my time with this movie. Ag, not something I tend to watch again, but yeah. I liked the How from two thousand one coded visual language of the of the blinking red dot on the camera There's something really sinister about that before you get actually introduced to the creepy little girl red silhouette. the Red Queen. Yeah. something I thought you know it was far more terrifying when it's just a voiceless camera with a red dot. That little red dot comes on and you're like, oh shit. There's something's something really sinister about that. Yeah, the red queen, visualization of her is not sinister her the little girl version is just and her awful voice Yeah, which again is quite reszy. It's like I have you're a pig Yeah Yeah. Do you remember that the new peepper pig was in Netflix Cora Really what the haunting the voice of. Yeah, the right, not what the follow up to the haunting of Hill House, the Bly Manor. Yeah, Bly Manor. I think she's the I think she walks around and she says over and over again practically perfect in every way. I think that's. Anyway, it's creepy You know forty two pecker pigs could be used to bring down a castle. Just one corner. If you were going to bring down every tower, then you would need one hundred and sixty eight pepper pig. Yeah, too be fair there might be daddy pigs that you need. you might need a few more special? Daddy pig. What an all time. great character he is. I've not reached my the pepper pig phase of having a child yet, so they're still just names. I don't I've never seen any pepper pig media as yet, but looking forward to it It's so funny's what an empire Pepper pick has because my daughter just turned twenty Yeah and she You know, when she was three four, Ppper Pick all day every day Yeah bedtime story, Pepper Pick Did you ever go to Ppper Pig worldor? No, I didn't have a car while Pepper Pig was in the ascendancy, so we only went once No sad asked Ella if she wanted to go again. She was too old. wasn't interesting. Well you enjoyed it? I got to go to for Pepper Pig just the one time. Did you enjoy it? Yeah There are loads of I got to go on Grandpa pig's train Miss Rabbit's helicopter So this all sounds good. Where in the country is it? It's like near. It's attached to Poulton's Park, I believe. near Southampton, Nar Southampton. What I like is when we get very specific geographic podcast and there's most of the people listening just have no idea what the fuck we're talking about. I'm just planning my future trip to Pepper Pig World whereere I grew up because I went back recently which is why my memories of Rochester Castle are so fresh. There is a diggerand . And I've never been but I can picture it. Yeah. Our friend Kiran's been with his son. Oh wow. I remember and I think he sent some photos to sllack or something. Yeah I do ye. And I just it looked it does look amazing. Diggers. You could just drive diggers Yeah and just bits of diggers, climb on diggers. anything you can do with a digger, they've done it Yeah. I think they've got some dumper trucks as well. The whole construction Kind of family is? A you telling me about the tank museum Bovington. I don't know if I told you about it, but I lived near it and I used to go there with my family soly often. Someone recently was telling me that they've been there. You can drive yeah, you can drive a tank and there's a tank simulator where you pretend to drive a tank. Well, why would you choose that? Be I thinkank driving the tank's quite expensive. the tank simulator, I think is either free or like a pound or something. With this bear in mind we are talking about or something I just loveved the idea that loads of Soviet tanks were decommissioned and someone somewhere in Bovington was like, holy shit. Yeah. Exactly. I've got an idea at Lads. I've got an idea. It reminds me in the nineties, at the end of the nineties, super fairy animals, the Welsh band just started turning up to festivals with a tank that they owned with super fury animals written down the side I think that's great marketing, I think. I mean, I still feel I remember it, so ye. G goinging back to the movie. I thought it was very brave and a bit sad but good that they got rid of Colin Salmon so early I thought I thought he's actually pretty good. He is in this movie. He is not good. He's like al right. He's good at some stuff comparatively.'s. American accent is falling out of his mouth. I thought it was alright. I actually was gonna say I thought it was quite good. He he's I think he's brilliant. and the right thing and Yeah I would hazard that he's slumming it slightly here. Right Well he is and doesn't necessarily look like a sort of a tactical team leader. 's doing's doing he can pull it off. He's doing his best. I think maybe we've entered an era of like extraordinary physiques in Hollywood You don't think he's got the physique for a tactical. I think he's got the physique of a really good looking actor. Right is what I think. I don't think he's got the ye, I don't think he does. No. I don't think he looks generic. They not be up. I think movies have lied to you about what a tactical officer really looks like. You're right We're talking about Johny Cage in Mortal combat. That guy can obviously actually do martial arts, but he looked like a postman I bet if you saw a man from the SAS, you'd be a little bit disappointed in this are all look I'm not saying Abss but they look They look like they have seen through time. They look like. They've all got beards, they all look and they love heavy metal and they're all Scottish. Yeah, there are a lot of Scots in the SAS. that's true. H I thought I liked that they get rid of him early Yeah, like throw the team into that sort of disarrayull death. Yes, isn't it It is and like, you know, the sort of more junior members of the team having to pick up the piece. It kind well it kind of goes from Oh my god. How many of these people are going to die in this? This is terrible. like and it's a shock because you expect one or two to maybe and they all get wiped out. And it goes from that and then actually my second thought was are theyre just thinning it down to the people who they can actually tell a story about. Yeah quite quickly. Just get rid of all those extras. Yeah, well, I thought it was quite brave and good, but whatever. Bra Hey before that because they they rescue Well they don't really rescue Alice That whole thing. I mean, like why pull apart this plot this movie? but it's a bit strange that will one the tactical team break into the house in that way? Company property? Extremely aggressively. like do you guys not know the codes? It reminded me it's so funny that Tomb Raider has a scene almost exactly the same. just people top to bottom tactical gear jumping through windows in ropes. We mashing up a mansion Yes Um And yeah, it is weird that if they know that these people work for the company that they would be so in their face with guns and torches, but I quite like that that mansion it had like reszy vibes because in my mind, resesident evil is There's like a real like, as I said, Gege Romero kind of just like in Raccoon city in towns with people. and that's like I love that. That's why I enjoy about the games the most And then there's a kind of corporate veryious side and then attached to that is the sort of the Um, like family, hereditary, like there's there's like a decadent sort of aristocracy vibe to it. and that was sort of picked up in the glimpses of the house that we saw I just thought what an odd job it is that they have to pretend to be a married couple in a massive mansion. It's a bit of a reach. and just to protect the door, basically I don't know why they need such a big mansion for to hide the door but That was strange. No idea why the police officer was there He kind of like grabs Alice, you know, so she she wakes up. Um and is wandering around going, whereere am I? And she goes out the front door. And this is like quite a thing, I thought because I can remember from Resident Evil, do you remember from the first game if you went out the front door There was like a cutscene where dogs would like, I think it was dogs or wolves or something would chase you back in. And so Because that's what, you know, it's quite a funny thing. It's like just what you probably should do. Od sleve. And she goes out the front door and obviously there's just the birds scare her and then the wirind scares her and then the policeman grabs her and drags her back in. Not really sure why he's there. if he knows who she is. I think no, I don't think he knows who shet know she is. He's just vaguely come looking for his sister. Yeah I guess or is outside waiting to with her after she's gotten the That was all quite strange, but I thought that was quite a nice throwback or nod anyway to the first game. It definitely felt like and again, it's the Resident Eil movie It felt like lots of things were happening to make Askar, Oh my go, what's happening Rather than because in retrospect you go, that makes sense. Right.ere's a series of events that yeah. I'm glad all of that happened and told me a story. One led to the other I yeah, I I it's that classic case though, isn't it of the order in which information is revealed to the audience just when you know everything, the reveals are seem weird, but at the time it's dramatic and exciting. Yeah. I don't know why they chose to take two people who'd forgotten who they were with them to the high. think they could have said, whyy don't you guys just lie down? Yeah and we'll go and do our job inide. O job which has nothing to do with you and we don't need you for Yeah having you along might be worse bring you into this quarantined virus zone I quite enjoyed the sort of the whole thing that he had basically escaped with with all the goods as well And then had just forgotten and had gone back with. I don't think he's forgotten. No he had forgotten. Dfinitely. Definitely because he got knocked out by the same because he says in his kind of reveal. I didn't realize that the Red een had security systems outside of the hive as well. So he is genuinely knocked out. He did nice for the beginning Yeah, he remembers more than he lets on, I think sooner. but it's a little bit total ral, isn't it? It's like if you get your memories back, you're going turn into a bad person. Yeah. had you Pce of yourself back together. I think we've done we've worst bit of the movie for me, unfortunately is the liquor You just can't get past the terrible, terrible graphics. I could Yeah. I didn't find it scary. No, but I It's exciting to see it, right? as a Ri fan. Yeah, all the liquor. cool. And I did feel a bit sad that I thought when it was out And it's the red Qeen who explains, oh now it's eaten that man. that's going to mutate something There's something a bit xenomorphy about it. Yeah. about being in this locked off underground facility and the liquor could just be anywhere. Yeah. I like that. but obviously it was You only get about twenty minutes of that, if anything Wh that's the where that's the scenario. Yeah. Gess like like a level way of being hunted by mis. X in in the games. Yes tr the lick a bit now. But I enjoy seeitting the licker. Yeah, it looks it looks terrible Yeah, it's sort of laughable, I think. I don't think it was laughable, but it' early days. I really enjoyed how they killed it. I think' death is good. metetal stick through its tongue. It's a very strong tongue It is which is able to hold up the entire weight of the creature as it's being dragged along that road. you may be wonder whether my tongue could hold me up I reckon it could. But then the doors close and the tongue snap That's the that's how much it can take V very sharp doors. That's how I want to go I think it's I think it's a good death, a good satisfying death. that kind of make sense in the you know, the environment that they've got, the sort of having it burn as it's dragged along the electric line Quite cool The It's so funny. watching the first scene where people shoot, so they're in some kind of generic basement area Michelle Rodriguez and her partner, JD. Yeah, JD. I'm a big, Miche Rodery, guess f They're ambushed by zombies. and this first time that they don't say the wordzombies do they know they don't say the wor zombies. They never say it And I was thinking that the policeman, I'd forgot, I've seen this film, but I' forgotten. He's trying to get his handcuffs off. Yeah. And it just seemed to me the two things like watching him fumble and almost like there's a real tantalizing sense of like just fucking get the handcuffs off. Yeah going on there. Everyone was shooting the zombies in the chest or leg. I know. And it was like rage bait. I was getting so angry can headshot these bastards, please. Yeah. And I thought that he might know more than the character had suggested so far. might get the handcuffs off, grab a gun and then just start popping people in the head. That's going to be so satisfying And instead none of that happens. It's someone play a game terribly. You'd assume that they are like the highly the most highly trained, you know, sort of special forces of umbrella Like so it was in like they have the skill to to shoot someone in the head. then maybe they they're thinking these are survivors, so let's do non fatal shot. to begin with, Yeah, I thought it was that was quite a good thing. He shot that zombie in the leg to begin with and then, you know And then again and then shoots her in the chest a few times. But with Michelle absolutely blast. Yes with an automatic rifle. as soon as it gets back up. But the thing is it's like compounded because then they go back to the Red Queen and they're like, how do we kill these things? And she's like, She basically sayso them shoot them in the head. And Why has no one thought of that? Like that's the surefire way to kill a human. Yeah. So if you're not sure if these are humans, it's probably a good place to st And every time anyone in a zombie movie now talks about that, all I can think about is the lion. Who's that guy from the Sky News, but he's in Shun of the Dead and just have the refrain over and over again. Oh yeah. What is it Destroy the head. Remove the head Yeah, Destroy the brain. Yes It is good. Yeah that was that was silly. and frustrating to be fair. I really thought the film knew what it was doing and it was going payoff Yeah but it wasn't especially as a a video game adaptation. where, you know, people have learned this lesson in the game. Like it's literally based on something. It's not like this is a new take on zombies where maybe, you know, or whatever or even that they I think they do know what they are because they say You know what these are or something, you know, it's not even like what what is this thing we're seeing? It's like they are aware of these as an idea. A little bit of science to justify them coming back from the dead. That was good. Yeah, that was quite good Electrical charge cells are going, but they can't rememberuff I enjoyed that Yeah, I think thinking about it Despite the fact I enjoyed watching this film I think more than two Raor It's not as good an adaptation as Tombotor is I was wondering about that too. I was wondering about that too. but it's tricky because The games are so slow. because of the way that they control and the whole idea. they didn't take on any of that slowness. No this is quite an action mov. It was Resie four before Resie four came up. Yeah there's loads of sort of instinctively you remembers her her expert melee moves. Yeah. she's dropping a bunch of moves that you'd see Leon doing in Resie four like drop kicking zombies in the face I like kicking their neck. I like kicking the dog. Roundhouse are the dog. That was good. The dog bit. The dogs are just covered in bacon. Yeah. That' right Most of are day it works like holy shit, please. Yeah. please Nope Those dogs were scary. Mony? I wouldn't lik to film that. You se first. Yeah. You can eat the bacon. But I thought her kicking the dog was cool the bit where she jumped off the wall like Trinityes in the Matrix. I' wr it down because this is obviously there is Matrix has got a lot to answer for when the action gets going. It's got a lot to answer for. But it it's too The Matrix still holds up and it's so fucking good. And then so many of the things that came afterwards have got like just a couple of drops of matrix. Yeah. And yeah, you can really tell. I guess the budget for making, I mean, even the late latter Matrix films I guess whatever the resource was to do proper bullet time L in all the sequels that at times just pretend, isn't it?'s CG going slow. I think they just moved on. Yeah It was probably' not a budget thing, it's probably like an easier thing and they probably thought it was cooler. Yeah. I enjoy he you get like a, you know The slowbow is can see the frame rate chugging along with sllomer in this film. Yeah, you can. But in terms of like whether it's a good adaptation, can I agree with you. It's about the directness of it and I think that It saids an interesting one in terms of deciding that Animated dead people and umbrellas. the most important thing or at least is like something you can base an adaptation and bring us into that world with and Qite like that And I don't know if it's if it then I think they They almost te up The first or second game with The ending of this film. Yes. I want to talk about the ending. I really I love When I was about eighteen, I used to love films that ended in this way You know, the trope where you think it's done. Yeah and something else behind the scenes comes in and like when the princess comes back and tells Mario and Luisi they've got to come back to the mushroom kingdom. Yeah, just like that. Exactly He'd imagine being in the cinema as a die hard Rezi fan and hearing just someone you don't know. is Wesker at this point saying. We could use him for the Nemesis program or whatever it'. Oh yeah the Oh my god, Nemesis. And stuff starts coming out of his shoulder. Yeah Oh man, that guy's fucked. Yeah And you don't know how much movie you've got when when she wakes up, you know and it's quite slow, again, you're like, Oh my god, it'll be weird. more more movie to come. because and I thought whatever teasing they wanted to do about nemesis and her being in Raccoon City came at the expense of it being a good ending. The characters are not really There's not a nice ending to this film, really? No, no, especially for man. you don't like it's aice ending. it's like 'syaleian Cvant all over again. I don't mind it yeah, I think maybe in a horror setting I prefer A little bit of hope. Yeah, like if you' try to escape for the whole like they would never just kill Alice. but or that dude, but yeah, it seemed a bit grim to just just be n Watch for the next movie and I'm not sure that the next movie follows it up particularly directly. I can't remember what happens and I'm not going watch it. I've never seen any of the other Rzi films, only this one. same. So maybe mean I won't Oh yeah, Amazon did offer me the opportunity to buy all six for fourteen pounds. a good deal. It's on six. There are all six of them. They're all on Disney. Yeah, but I cancellled my Disney subscription. Oh my go. To save money then spent more than the subscription to I' was gonna say mate, ust get back on it. By this movie. But you've done yourself a wrongin Yeah, I I'm not sure it's a good adaptation. the at the adaptation of I'm thinking very much, I suppose of the first game because this movie is called Resident Evil, but like you know it would be much Sower much more scary. this is quite an action film, I think. It is It is scary ish. There was a resident evil series wasn't that a Netflix? There was. I don't know anything about it. I watched two or three episodes. I thought it was not very good, but it's much quicker. Yeah. But I think you do you get that hint of the mansion. I would likes more mansion
