Welcome to Real Talk, with me Honey Ross. I'm me Jonathan Ross and is where the two of us chat about the films and TV that we've been watching over the last week or so new release in the cinema, thingsings on all the streaming platforms, anything that you can watch where words and pictures combine moving images. And if you want to catch our latest episode two, weve covered two films out in cinemas now, Backrooms, which we both love Obsession, we both love and I also wented a little bit about Ladies first and Attack of the Mh Gata both available for your viewing pleasure. if indeed you will take pleasure from them on Netflix. Thank you so much if you've been in touch and please do give us a follow on Instagram. You can get in touch with us via DM. We are at Real Tal Ros Now let's get into some of the extra bits watching this week because you went to see Masters of the Universe, the preremiere. We couldn't have talk better on my embargo. The embargo has now been lifted I suspect I know why it was embargoed I wait toar what you have to say Look, I was really open to it. I was really excited about it and also the premier was veryery fun and lovely. But One, I mean, I was sat there, I was like, you hated it because it took ages for it to start. as it always does because there's a lot of like you know, they come out and they do a speech which took like forty five minutes after it. I was just sat there going, Dad would I hated this. But we had a really nice time. and you know, obviously it was very nice to be invited. The film, however This is obviously Mattel's first offering since Barbie. So they've got a lot riding on this because Barbie was such a hit Really not It's so generic It's bloated, It's long, it's two hours and fifteen minutes and I was just waiting for some kind of I don't know, some self awareness and something self referential, anything It felt like a million films I'd seen before, it felt kind of the tone they were going for was Guardians of the Galaxy. So kind of knowing, playful f but lacking in any of that kind of real authentic charm that that film Right. who played Adam, Prince Adam of Eternia is Nicholas Galatine, who's like It's so funny being really heavily pushed by Amazon. and I was saying that to my partner. And then at the end of the film, we saw that it's an Amazon film. Right. So like, well, of course they put Nicolas Gale and he's a very handsome young man. I'm sure a lovely person They didn't give him much to do. It's interesting because, you know, he's obviously had to go through this major physical transformation to play He Man. He's got absolutely shredded ripped.ripped. In the first half they're acting like he's you know, some kind of like scrowny little We cling they just put an oversized pink shirt on him. See that's a mistake because when they did that, when they did the first Captain America film the Russell Brothers, the idea is that Steve Rogers was this weak guy who was turned down from the arrmy, evenough wanted to enlist because he was physically inable. and then he takes the super serum, the super soldier serum, they see GI his body, Which was the right thing to do. It was the right thing to do because you go Oh this sweet little baby boy, Teniny tiny scrwy boy.lease me a sweet ser., sweet serum. Skeletor, any good in it? Skeletor, you know what? One of the things that did work, Skeletor, great, looks amazing. He's one of the only characters that kind of got a single little bit of laughter from me. Allison breathing it. I mean, look, everyone looks amazing, The costume's amazing They clearly spent tune on it? Do they play around in the inherent silliness of the Motu world? I think they try to and there's a lot of him basically when he's banished from Eternia comes to earth and so there's a lot of him telling people about Eony and people going, what are you talking about man and that kind of thing. Do they do they have any of the sillier characters? Be you know, I used to I don't really collect Han toys even though I I find them funny And I love the Eternia playays set. I keep having to wrestle with myself about whether or not I will spend the many thousands of pounds it will cost to buy the Eternneia Plet buy the Eternia No. I know, I won't buy. But some of the sillier characters that people hate at the time because it was a really successful toy line. Um there was snout spout They've got all of your favorite little freaky guys. So snspouts in.nspout, I reckonnize in it. He' a bigig man? He' sort of he's got an elephant head on a very muscular body where they all have muscular bodies. He was nicknamed Hoseenose by some people. Oh, I don't know if I saw her. What about? Is Twistoid in? Who's Twistoid? Tistoid and Rotor with these two spinning top figures that you pull the ripord and they just knock each other over So they were like, yeah, they became like little whirlwinds. I mean, they've got a lot of little freaky guys. They got fistos there. Fisto. they put fisto in Fistos on a stake. Anyone called Fisto. and they make a lot of jokes about him being called Fisto. they go rot one with the fisto. They go root one with the fisto jokes. What about Mosquito Mosquito you know, I think there's a lot of references to the toy collection and I think if you're a real he manan fan, you'll love it. And that was one thing that was lovely about going to the preremier was There was so many H men fans that were all dressed up. There was a couple of skeletors in the audiences. There were a couple of he men there. Mos men Mos man o Oh, yeah, they like give that, you know, They I think do a lot of fan service and I think if you're a big fan of the Ty collollection or the cartoons, won't be disappointed in the sense that they' You know, really tried that. Thene toy I really would like seeing is Stinkle ink W was Stinkle in it? st What a stinkle look like? Stinkle was a toy that had a little patch on his body that was meant to smell bad as well.itally It was a toy that literally could make it stink, even though it was like patouli oil, I think they put on the toy itself. Why would you want a stinky little mat? I mean, I love the smell of patchouli bad. There's so many. I love the way they used to always end with like o was what there was like spike ore well. That's they didn't even really try with the names, did they? Spike or. But I love that you're on a first name basis with all of them. W, man Ramaneth. Oh good. Ramanz. I mean, for me, it sounds like maybe I should go and see this. I think you are more likely to be the demographic than I am. and I love that. I think I really was rooting for it and I wanted it to be this punchy, brilliant, funny campy film because that's, you know, an aesthetically, it's very campy. They really try with the humor. It just, you know didn't hit the mark for. it's a shame because I get the feeling, the fact that it was embargoed until the day before release, Normally that is a studio knowing that it's going to get critically slammed And it's a shame because you think about films which were so much better, than they needed to be. L the first of the Lego films, Unbelievable f, which was an amazing film Minecraft movie, which I still don't fully understand I can see why it captures the joy of those who love Minecraft. and it's kind of a very modern piece of cinema in a way And I get the feeling that they didn't have that approach here. No, but even Barbie you know, Barbie's so good. Barbie's a great And I came away from this thinking, God, we got so lucky with Barbie. Barbie's so brilliant. I suppose that's tough becausecause Barbie had that kind of blliant idea of taking the Tum and putting in the real world. You can't do that again. That would have worked for him. do it again. Oh they do it again. He basically you know, he's in Eonia for a few minutes, then he goes to earth for far too long and then he comes back to Enia. Well, look, I will give it a look obviously because I love seeing Skeletor on screen. Skeletor iss a great villain. Skeletor is brilliant in this and it's one of the few things that does really work. Okay, well that's out now if you'd like to go and see it and let us know if you agree or disagree with Honey. We got some questions in. Soall we read this one out from Donal first? Yeah, let's do it. We have a question from Donal and Donal White saying Hi Jonathan Honey wouldould love to hear both your opinions on Steve Correll. I loved him in the patient airing here on RTE in Ireland, but I've started watching his news series Rustart on HBO and find it all a bit stuffy in old fashioned Your thoughts, cheers, don'tal I ha't watched the rooster yet and it's been offered to me a few times and it did look to me I didn't feel particularly excited about watching it, which is why I haven't given it the chance here because it looked to me somewhat predictable Like I would be able to see what was coming. It looked like it was a fairly well traveveled road Yeah, and a lot of people have recommended it to me because I think it's quite far the doaorghter heavy and for obvious reasons people recommend that to me a lot. I do love Steve Correll and I've heard people say it's interesting, so I might give it a look It's interesting that I felt the same way. I saw the trailer for it and I saw the still of it on my whatever streaming service it's on. just went. I don't know if I fancy it. I felt like I've seen it already weird. Yeah. But I do love Steve Creell. He's a really lovely man. I've met him a few times, I've interviewed him a few times. and I loved seeing him move from being like you know, an out and out comedy actor. Obviously the office was a huge hit with him in the US office and like Fully old Virgin, he was great in and Anchoran, he was great in. But then he made that transition very successfully to kind of like serious heavier roles. Yeah. I mean, he's so good in Foxcatcher. Foxcatchch is amazing in. So he has that great range as well.. So overall, like you know, I would always welcome seeing him in something. But weirdly, I have I suppose D like picked up on what you've said there. It did seem a little bit old fashioned already. it felt to me like it was an idea that was from twenty years ago It looked somewhat formulaic, but I would love to be proved wrong and I would love to kind of give it a go. Well let's try and both give it a go Yeah. then we'll get back to Donal, but thank you for witing in. We have a couple more. We've got a couple of our DMs on Instagram and on Instagram, we're at Weeel talkal Well. if you follow us then, you want to send us any questions or thoughts that we can read out, then that's an easy way to do it Do want to read this one at home? I would love to. We've got a lovely DM from Joanna. Joanna says Dear Honey and Jonathan, or J Roe, as you were affectionately known in our house.ice. We all share a love for horror and being shocked or scared from our viewing experience. My question for you is regarding the moment you found spookiest within a film or TV show. These are the scenes that made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and possibly even gave you nightmares or kept you awake at night I find certain characters particularly terrifying as they dig deep into my soul The Dwarf killer in Don't L Now is an obvious one, but I was also scared stiff of the priest in pololtergeist too The actor was actually dying of cancer whilst filming the movie and his realistic ghostly appearance added to his otherworldly aesthetic Bob from Twin Paks was another character who gave me chills. I had to close my eyes whenever he made a rare appearance on screen, but not because he looked particularly frightening but due to the genius of Lynch's directing and Bobs sketchy backstory. Okay, yeah, and that's interesting that there are moments that really stick with you. I mean, I don't want to give them away, but there's a particular moment in Xis three. Oh my God, that's such a good pres.uch such a jolt so kindind of It's hard to pin by down why it's as scary as it is. I mean, you can kind of I guess because it so unexpected? exxpected the direction of where the scare comes from? Well, that's a brilliant directed film. that was directed by William Peter Blatty, who wrote exorcist and I don't know if he doirect it before that. It's really that whole sequence you really doirect it because it goes on for a long while. And it's one shot. And it's one shot. I mean something happens in the background of the shot once you've been lulled into a false sense of security, which is so alarming. But speaking of peaks, of course, in Malholland Drive, there's a moment where the guy appears fromhind the dumps or the back of the twwinkie' diner. Is it his diner? Oh my God, that's an amazing and terrifying moment. That's a horrifying scare You know one scare recently that I really loved. There's actually a couple that come to mind, but one from TV is on Widows Bay in the how to planl a party episode. Why where cut in the mirror and you see what's actually going on in the room Everybody has stood there with their mouths open. Yes that's good. Haunting, horrifying, really creepy. just like sets your skin alight with terror Also, you know what, even though I didn't particularly love the film, there was a Scare and Hocb that really stayed with me. Um where he's walking and suddenly his mother appears right behind him and is walking like in a really kind of haunting way, really close behind him. It's just so jarring. Well, there's a moment in obsession that we're waving around in this week's episode of the podcast where The lead woman suddly walks in a slightly strange way. The one she walks backward. Yeah yeah really great really shocking moment. But often it's just those little moments where something just twists something unexpected happens. Yeah. But you're right. I think in terms of the characters, certainly the dwarf character in Dolot now is Really quite terrifying I mean the old lady and drag me to hell Yep, that's a great thing. but that's more fun Yeah, but like there's something about the injustice of the situation thatough I feel so rough. Yeah. I mean, I think we slightly disagree in Drakemail because I kind of think she kind of had it coming. You said this the other day when I was like, you're crazy for that day. Because no because she did not act in the way that she was meant that she wanted to act She betrayed her true self to do something which was sort of a career move. She still get dragged to hell. Maybe not, but you know gota do the right thing. got to do got to do the right. Wow, okay. That's it, you know. Judgi. So thank you for that. Yeah, there's so many moments up. We should think of some more. And if you've got any you could send in as well, please do. because I love talking about those moments but I don't want to give anything too much away about that. That's the problem is you don't to give too much away. No, exactly. you know, I do think obsession just reccently is a horror film that has really stayed with me and is one where I'm like, I don't want to talk about that at night. I love that. There is one moment which is more real world horror, but it was very progressive at the time, which is, I think, was it sixty eight or sixty nine that the very first George Romero zombie film came out Night of the Living Dead. And there's a moment the very end sequence when something happens, which is more to do with the way society is. Yes which is just so horrific. Yeah and so brutal and so real. And so clever because you know, after a movie which is about supernatural thing, then something happens which is a real life hle, which really grounds it in an interesting way. you know, one thing aus me as well as the bring her back sequence when the young booyys possessed for the first time? Yeah that which is I think one of the early examples of someone smashing their head against things There's a moment in There's a moment Hreditry. There's a moment in the dead zone as well when someone uses scissors in a way which wouldn't be advised And there's a load of moments in Italian horror films, which I find genuinely great. even Even some which aren't particularly good, but there's a moment in Don't Trture the Duckling. I've not seen that one, I will admit. Don't Trture the Duckling is quite a good film, but there's a moment involving someone falls off a cliff in a really horrible way I don't know I don't know whether it does it's also quite funny, but it certainly stayed with me I do think a lot of moments in hereditary are things that I like don't want to think about Yeah too late at night again, similarly like really kept me up. Yeah Hreditry And also it follows. Oh my god, it follows. because also you find yourself doing that thought experiment of like What would you do get out of that situation. I think what's suating for is the whole film is kind of a thing that stays with you in a jarring way Rather than just a moment for it. And there are so many moments in it that do work that way. But the overall concept of the film and the premise of the film is so terrifying completely. You know one This is actually quite a niche pull but do you remember Sinister? Sinister was that al with the home movies in the attic? The home movies in the attic up until that point they show you all of the home movies and they' horrible. It's like, you know various ways that families are getting murdered and it's so nasty And then there's one, I don't want to give away too much, but with a lawn mower and a horrid sound Yes that shit me up in the cinema. I remember seeing that going No, no, no, don't show me that. don't want tona see that. it's great. That cinema I've been to see some films where the moments which I really wish I hadn't seen and they didn't stay with me in a good way. No. And that's different though, because you can put stuff in for sort of shock or grotesque value sometimes, but what I love about Sem is, they do cut. Yeah. and you're going please cut, please cut, please cut and then they do. and you're like, than God But it's really good storytelling. But that's made me think of the moment that everyone thinks he is in Rosemy's baby, but isn't The eyes. Yeah. Is it not Is it Mandala effect? It'sandala effect. You don't the baby Yeah, 'use they just what did you do to his eyes? It's so good.. That's about it for this week though.
