Mom, can you tell me a story? Sure. Once upon a time, a mom needed a new car. Was she brave? She was tired mostly. But she went to Carvana.com and found a great car at a great price. No secret treasure map required. Did you have to find a dragon? Nope, she bought it 100% online. From her bed actually. Was it scary? Honey, it was as unscar buying could be. Did the car have a sunroof? It did actually. Okay, good story. Car buying you'll want to tell stories about. Buy your car today on Car vana. Delivery fees may apply. Parle-tu français. It's the amazing rico bronya podcast with your host Evan Roberts walk off rico bronya i hope everybody's in a wonderful mood. I hope everybody is warm. Welcome to a landmark episode of Rico Brownia, episode 66 6 . Apparently, that's some kind of major number. 666 of the Rico Brunha. The New York Mets defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks in 10. Walk it off in frozen weather in a game that was moved up by three hours because the New York Mets said we are not going to make our fans sit out in very cold conditions. We'll make you sit in cold conditions, but we're going to do it in late afternoon instead of early evening. Welcome into the Rico . I would n't call this an instant reaction. I would call this a I finished the game about a half hour ago reaction. Uh I watched this game a little bit later on the D VR so I could tend to some family matters. Good matters, just family stuff. And the Mets are able to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks by a final score of four to three. Let me clear my voice real quick. Let me start from the very end. And we'll work our way backwards. This is a confession. A little confessional for you. In the bottom of the tenth inning, with Francisco Lindor as the ghost runner, as it's called, the Manfred Man on second base, and Bo Bichette at the plate, I thought that Arizona and Torrey Lovello would walk Bo Bachet. Seemed to make the most sense, especially with Tyrone Taylor, Luis Robert Jr., and Brett Beatty due to hit. I was surprised when they decided to attack him. The former Met Paul Seawald attacked him. Like I always say when I disagree with an opponent, it ain't my problem . That's what I would have done, but it ain't my problem. And Bo Bach et came very close to getting the game winning hit, but Cattel Marte made that great diving play. That led to Tyrone Taylor being the scheduled hitter with a runner on third base and less than two outs . I would not. I repeat, I would not, as a confessional, I would not have used Ronnie Mauricio . In fact, I'll argue, even though it worked, that using Ronnie M auricio made little to no sense. Why? Because you wanted a left-handed bat against Paul Seawold? How about the fact that Ronnie Mauricio at times, certainly not in this at bat, but at times has been an easy person to pitch to as a guy that you could get to chase. And when Mauricio fell behind Owen, too, I I didn't think there was a chance in hell that he was putting the bat on the ball, let alone ripping a line drive for a walk-off hit. So I would like every Met fan currently listening to this Rico Brunia, every Met fan in their car on a Wednesday morning driving to work, or every MetFan consuming this bad boy live on YouTube to admit it. Raise your hand. You did not like the idea at all of using Ronnie Mauricio to pinch hit for Tyrone Taylor. Tyrone Taylor in a lot of ways was the perfect guy to have up in a spot like that. Because think about what you need with a runner on third base and less than two outs. You need contact. Diamondbacks are going to bring the infield in, so sure. You hit a ground ball right at somebody, unless it's a contact play. Uh, either there's a play at the plate or there's an easy out runner on third two out. But either way, contact is a good thing. Because contact could A lead to a miscue, as we've seen plenty of defensively over the last couple of days. Or it can just be a bloop that falls in. The Diamondbacks certainly had those. I keep thinking back to Nolan Arenado's blue pit in the fifth inning that gave the diamondbacks the lead . So if you are asking me with a runner on third base and less than two outs, who's the better bat to have up? Ronnie Mauricio or Tyrone Taylor? I I mean I could lie to you. I could say, oh, I was with Mendy. That was a right decision. No, it wasn't. Didn't make any sense. But it worked . And here's the saying about history and about the world. It's written by the winners. And so in this game, Carlos Mendoza was a winner. The New York Mets were a winner. So me sitting here analyzing how I would have let Tyrone Taylor hit, I'm a loser. And Ronnie Mauricio is the winner. You feel great for Ronnie. You know, it's funny, Mauricio's been up here at times over three of the last four seasons. Kind of crazy to think about, but we saw him at the end of 23. We obviously did not see him in 24 due to the injury. We saw him mostly ride the bench in 2025, and obviously now with his being called up with Juan Soto going on the injured list . And he's had big moments . Like in his defense, while I didn't like him in this sequence, I didn't like him in this situation. I think about the home running hit against I guess it was San Diego or San Francisco. Like he had some pretty big moments on that West Coast trip last season. He's had some big moments. Like it hasn't been, you know, nothing from Ronnie . So he's had that, they call it the clutch gene. I think that's a stupid term. So let's think of something else. He's had clutch moments as a New York man. It's not like he's incapable of it, but I think in a sequence in which you're looking for contact, it doesn't make as much sense . The other th ing that I didn't like , and I guess you could argue it definitely worked, was pinch hitting for Mark Vientos with Jared Young. That's right. I'm gonna cleanse myself on this walk-off victory with all the things I didn't like that actually worked. Like I'm not telling you things that I didn't like and it's I'm just finding things to complain about. No, all of these things worked. So consider this my apology to Carlos Mendoza. I wouldn't even say it's an apology. Let this be the cleans ing. Where we could admit that there were things that Mendy did in this game that you didn't like, that didn't make a lot of sense, but by God it worked. So the sequence with Jared Young was the eighth in ning. We are breaking down this game backwards. I like that. We're doing it's like the backwards Seinfeld edition. We're going, we're going backwards. All right. We start off in the 10th. We'll get to some of the pitching stuff with Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. But let's get to the eighth inning. Because this is where the Mets are still trailing in this game three to two. They get the leadoff hit by Jorge Polanco. They use Tyrone Taylor as a pinch runner, which turned out to be key because when Brett Beatty behind in the count, and that is a big thing to recognize. Behind in the county, pounds of base hit the center field. Tyrone Taylor aggressively goes first to third. And I thought that the center fielder, I think Alec Thomas was out of his game at this point because the Diamondbacks had gone to their bench. Let me see. Uh yeah. So the center fielder was Jorge Barrosa. I thought he had to play at third base. And I was surprised that he didn't come up throwing. And so Taylor was able to go first to third. But you had first and third, one out, Jonathan Lewiziga, tough righty on the mound, and instead of letting Vientos hit over three at this point, he goes Jared Young . And I I guess the reason I didn't like it, more so than any disrespect of Jared Young, because I don't mean it as disrespect of Jared Young, was probably more of a confidence in Vientos . That Mark Vientos has done a really nice job over these last few days, granted, over three in his first three plate appearances in this game, that I thought he had earned the opportunity to get this at bat. And very similarly to what we were talking about in the 10th inning with the Mauricio Taylor decision, you just needed contact, which is what Jared Young supplied when he hit the fly ball to right field for the sacrifice fly. You needed good contact, because if you hit a ground ball right at somebody, it's a double play and the inning is over. And I think we'd all agree the game would be done if the Mets didn't score in the bottom of the eighth inning. So you needed contact , but you needed hit the ball in the air contact. It worked out. I think unlike the other move, I think this was a sound decision. Like I get it, getting the left-hander. I get it that Vientos, when you date back to last year, has not exactly done all that much. So what are we basing on the fact that Mark Vientos deserves this app at? I think going young over Vientos, again, not something I agreed with, but made more sense than going Mauricio over Tyrone Taylor. But again, it worked out. And credit to Jared Young, because Jared Young had one job. You have to find a way to drive that run in. And he had a deep fly ball to right field and drove that run in. So great job by him . Let's get to the pitching in this game. Now we'll go all the way back to the very beginning. Look, Freddie Peralta was sharp. He did his normal thing where he gets into trouble in the first inning, which is kind of common with Freddie. He's not the great first inning pitcher, but usually settles in. And he was able to make the big pitch when he needed to. Two on, two out. There was some loud contact for Dumble one real hard, but right at Luis Robert Jr., he gets the ground out to get out of the inning. He works through the error by Lindor. That was a bad error by Lindor. We all have that dream trip we've been wishing we could go on, but too often life or usually price gets in the way. I said that on the air on Tuesday when we were talking about the time change and what the players think and if there's some kind of advantage over making the diamondbacks play at night. And what I reminded that caller was that Lindor does not appear like someone who loves April. Not just because he struggles in April, but because if you go back to last year, and I appreciate Dan sent this into me, the official archivist of Rico Brunia and Ed and Tiki . When Lindor had his wolf home run last year, the question was: what were you thinking? And Lindor said that we won the game and I get to get out of the cold . So every joke there is some truth, at least that's what they say. So Lindor doesn't like the cold. He's all bungled up, and with one out and nobody on, an easy ground ball off the bat of Argus, he just flat out boots in. I know the ball came up a little bit on his glove side, but an inexcusable error by Francisco Lindor, and then an inexcusable bunt by Barroso with two on and one out. I don't know , but Peralta gets a big strike out of Catel Marte, pitches a one, two, three-third, pitches a fairly easy fourth that featured a bunt hit with two outs, and then you get to the fifth inning. And this is where Freddie disappointed me . I will deal with the five inning Freddie jokes because until proven otherwise that's what he is. And I would have been content with five innings from Freddie Peralta. He gets the first two outs without a problem, back-to-back strikeouts. And this is where I take the blame. His pitch count after the back-to-back strikeouts was at about 8 3 . And I looked at that pitch count and I said, boy, I wonder if if he could get this last out quick. Do you push Peralta for a sixth ? And as soon as that thought went through my mind, Fred die couldn't even get through the fifth. He gives up the base hit to Corbin Carroll. He has the long at bat to Geraldo Perdoma . And he walks him. His pitch count is at now, it's at 91 . And you can sense after that walk that Freddie wanted to stay in this game and was gonna give Mendy an earful if he came out. And I like the fact. I do, I is where I'm gonna compliment Carlos Mendo za, the opposite, because it didn't work out. Where I appreciate that he gave his ace, because that's what he is for now, the opportunity to get through that fifth inning and face Gabriel Moreno after he put two guys on base and his pitch count was 91 . But you got to get him out . If you're Freddie Peralta , you have to find a way to get this last out. And he gets ahead of him one and two, and then he hits him of all things. And at that point , as much as there was a thought of can you give him one more batter, bases loaded two out, it's a walk. It's a hit batsman . Like he's not getting pounded. Can you give him one shot? You have a two-nothing lead, so there's like a tiny cushion . And the other reason I thought about giving him another batter is that warming up in the bullpen was Was kar Brazzaban. And we have pointed this out that Brazaban's numbers against lefties not nearly as good as it is against righties. And so we've seen, and I've given these examples in recent RICOS as I'm gonna swive another little bit of water, excuse me for a second . Taste good. I try to do it less awkward than Rubio did that one time at the State of the Union . But I thought, all right, you're not gonna like the Braz ban del Castillo matchup. So why not give Freddie one more battery? He's at 97. You know, the longest this at bat could go, maybe it's 103, 104, 105 , but this is truly it. Mendy did not agree. He goes to Braz ban, and we see the Mets for the first time, really. I know there have been challenges that have been made by the opponent that has worked out for them, but this was your first, like game-changing challenge. When Braz oban strikes out Del Castillo, gets him, but wait a second, let me pound my helmet to challenge this. And it's rule the ball. And then a bat, I think it was a pitch or two pitches later is when Del Castillo pounds the base hit to right to tie the game up at two . And there's no one to complain about with that regard. It's the new rule. It is what it is. They got it right . He was challenging. He was right to challenge. I mean, it's pretty straightforward, unlike you know, out and save calls at second base or first base. Like these balls and strike calls are pretty straightforward. It's either a strike or a ball. You see it right in front of you. It really comes down to the player and when they decide to challenge. Because there's been a lot of examples of players just not doing it, of players saying, hey, I'm not going to challenge in this spot. I think we've had a lot of that. I could sit here and give you examples every single game where players could have challenged and have decided not to . You got to pick your spot. And in a case like this, fifth inning , two-nothing game, the difference between strike three and two-and-two with bases loaded , no-brainer challenge by Del Castillo. But then, you know, Razabaum still has a chance to send him out, and he doesn't. And then he gives up the blue pit to Nolan Arenado. And so it did start to feel like this was going to be a bad day. You have a two-nothing lead. You missed out on an opportunity to score more runs in the second inning. You missed out on an opportunity to score runs in the fourth inning with guys on base. Like they had some chances here. They didn't come through. Freddie Peralta had two outs and nobody on and couldn't get that last out of the fifth inning. It it sort of felt in that moment like this was shaping up to be a bad loss . But here's where this Met bullpen deserves an immense amount of credit. While Braz ban gave up the two hits that allowed those three inherited runners to score, Is gar cia, who has not done anything good as a Met yet? Finally gave you that pretty good underrated performance when he comes in and gets six valuable outs. And they were valuable because you bridge Brazzabon finishing the fifth to your late-inning relievers . The relievers that you trust. The circle of trust. I think this is the first time I've used that term of 2026. And I think it's pretty obvious who's in that circle of trust. I think Huasgar Brazzaban is still in it, despite giving up the back-to-back base hits and the fact that he has struggled with an inherited runners this season. I would still say there's a level of trust with Brazzabon, but then you've got Brooks Rayleigh, who we saw pitch the seventh, even in an very n or pitch the eighth, I should say, in a very non-sharp inning. Probably the least sharpest we've seen Brooks Rayleigh this season , and yet he strikes out back to back guys and gets through the eighth inning . We see Devin Williams and make things exciting, put a couple of guys on base and get the huge strikeout of Del Castillo to end the ninth inning. We see Devin Williams again show poise. And I feel really good because I had a superstition going where every time Devin Williams would come in, I would text Hoff and say, This is the Devin Williams implosion edition of the Rico . I have done it numerous times. I didn't do it this time because I was on DVR. So how can I what am I what am I doing? First of all, my phone is completely checked out when I'm on DVR. And how am I supposed to do that? The game's probably over by the time I'm I'm texting th him that. And by the way, quick aside on DVR, I was saying this off air to Big Mac, Chris McMonagle. One of the things I love about DVR is it's an easy excuse to unconnect from the outside world. And I think a lot of us have a tough time doing that. I I'm one of them. I raise my hand where you got your phone near you, you got you got something near you. You have some kind of technology near you . And when you DVR a game , it's like a a fir mer way to take that technology and take it away from you. So I kind of like the fact that on Tuesday and then again on Wednesday, I'm D V Ring the Mets, which forces me to completely disconnect from the outside world. With that said, what I was trying to get to is that we don't have to worry about superstitious anymore. Like I don't have to text off every time Devin Williams comes into a game that this is about to be the Devin Williams implosion edition of the Rico Bronya. Cause I didn't it and Devin Williams was able to not implode and pitch a scoreless ninth inning. Then you get to Luke Weaver. And it's amazing, man, these Yankee relievers. I know we've been mocked for bringing in the two guys that helped contribute to the Yankees, not winning the American League East last year. But Luke Weaver comes in, not the easiest spot, the runner on second, Manfred Mann in the tenth inning, and pitches a clean one, two, three inning. Great job by Luke Weaver. And great job by the Met Bullpen. Good things come in force. Like ukulele strings, boy band members and PayPal pay in four. No fees , no interest, no impact on your credit score. Book your spring break now if you add it up, it adds up to five and a third innings of scoreless baseball. But not only that, I'll give you a stat about this Met Bullpen and maybe we give credit to the new administration, the new pitching lab, since Jeremy Hefner is gone. Zero walks . Zero . There were three walks in this game. They came from Freddie Peralta. The Met Bullpen, pitched five and a third innings, did give up six hits , zero runs, zero walks . So excellent work all the way around. And I think when you get to extra innings at home. And you also use your bullpen, like the circle of trust part of your bullpen, which questi ons their availability for game two and potentially game three, especially if they're used again in game. That's a game you want to win. You don't want to lose that game. You don't want to give that game away . So great job by the New York Mets Pullpen. As far as the offense is concerned, Lindor had two good at-bats early in the game, the leadoff hit, which led to the Mets getting their first run of the game. He had a double in the second inning, which really should have been caught by Corbin Carroll. I don't know if it was the sun or if it was the wind, but he missed that ball and then committed a real error, but in my opinion, his second miscue of the play when he made the bad throw into the cutoff man, which allowed Francisco Al varez to score from first . So that's where the Mets again get the benefit of some shoddy defense. We know the Giants certainly had a lot of that in the series in San Francisco, and we saw a little bit of that in this against Arizona. We saw pretty much look a quiet offensive performance. They get the run in the first inning on the sack fly by Beatty. And I mentioned earlier they had a lot of opportunities. They had bases loaded, nobody out . Scoring one run when you have bases loaded, nobody out with your four, five, and six hitters coming up, it's that is a disappointment. I mean, it's better than nothing, but it's a disappointment. So the first run, they should have scored more. The second run was a gift by the Arizona defense. And their next run didn't come till the eighth inning. But it was contact that made it happen. A sack fly by Jared Young. Contact was very important in this game. They ended up striking out seven times in the nine and a third innings that they played, which is, I guess, this day and age, like a pretty good number , but contact matters. We saw it. Their first run was on a sack fly. Their second run was on contact. That guy back that got miss kind of judged by the right fielder. Their third run came on a sacrifice fly, and their fourth run was a hit, but it was just make contact with a runner on third and less than two out. Contact matters . And the Mets were able to do it. So nice victory. I can't believe it's four in a row. Doesn't it doesn't even feel like four in a row? I don't know why. I don't know if it's that they're missing Soto , which is obviously there's a level of concern. I talked about this a little bit on Evident Tiki. I'll give you some of it here too. When you look into what calf injuries can turn into , and the recent examples of guys missing three, four weeks because of it, sometimes more , coming back and then having a re-injury. Uh, it's a scary proposition, which is why the Mets need to be really careful . And look, this lineup, I as soon as I wrote the lineup down. You know, I'm scoring the game. I I'm still perfect this season, by the way, ten for 11 for 11 in scoring games, but you write the lineup down, and while it's a deep lineup, because it has Marcus Simeon batting seventh. It has Francisco Alvarez batting ninth. It's a deep lineup . It's just missing the things that are going to make the other team scared. Right now, there is nothing in this lineup that would scare your opponent. I think Bo Bachet will eventually get there and he continues to hit into some hard luck. He was one for five, and that last one could have been a walk-off, could have been his moment that he talked about. Lindor has two hits, but his last three at bats were so bad that you don't feel as if he's broken out of this April slump . So what scares you? Where hit Polanco's not scaring you. Luis Robert Jr.'s not scaring you. Brett Beatty's not scaring you. Hopefully, Mark Vientos, if he becomes the guy we hope from 2024, maybe he scares you. So they miss that without Soto. And it's going to be a couple of weeks . I I am very impressed by Robert Jr. He's done such a great job of drawing walks. We've even seen him confidently challenge plays , pitches that are close , and he's challenged them. He had two more walks in this game on base two more times. I still would like to see him be a little bit more aggressive running the bases. We haven't seen that . And defensively , he's been I'd say average, but it's a small sample size. It's 11 games. I thought we saw one real positive out of Carson bench. I know Carson continues to be in this over . He did have a two-out walk in this game in the fourth, but more than that, in the ninth inning, he came up leading off the ninth against Kevin Ginkle. And off the bat, I thought he was going to hit it out. I thought Benge was going to get a walk-off home run, and that would have been pretty cool for him this early in his career, especially the break out of the Ofer. But then it looked like it was going to die by the wall, but okay, no problem. It'll be a leadoff double. Or maybe a leadoff triple. And then Jorge Barossa made this incredible catch, especially in the winter conditions that they're playing in. A really impressive sliding catch. So for every one ready to send down bench , let's at least acknowledge that that ninth inning at bat had a chance to be spe cial . Want some emails? Think I can get through some emails with my uh crappie voice. Not sure what this is. I don't think it's a cold or anything. Maybe it's allergies. Maybe the pollen is starting to hit . Anyhow, Sean writes, Evan, I hope many who doubted Stern's moves now start to have some patience with him. You simply can't judge the offseason this early. I'm not saying he should be praised either, but to be saying his moves suck six games into the season is absurd. Also , shout out to Carlos Mendoza, who continues to make perfect pinch hitting decisions. Only thing I would say is I would have taken Peralta out one batter earlier. When to pull a starter should never be determined based on trying to get a win . You're right that he factored in the pitcher trying to get the win, and that should not be how you make that determination. The reason I, and I disagree with Sean, obviously, the reason I wanted to push him even more was not about getting him a win. I don't think I ever even mentioned that. It was about getting him through five, not because that qualifies him for a win, but because I want to get as many outs from my starters as I can . You take your starting pitcher out prior to finishing the fifth inning. You're asking your bullpen to pitch more than your starter did . So maybe it has sounded as if I cared about the win. I don't. I think you're right that Mendy probably did, or at least Mendy knows Peralta does. Like I still think that matters to pitchers. I would eliminate that by getting rid of the five-inning rule. I think it's past its kind of service . But my want for Peralta to go deep was more about kind of just getting as many outs as I can from my starter . Nick writes, Evan, I was elated for Mauricio coming through in the 10th inning, but I'm curious how you felt about his pinch hitting decision. Tell the veteran seemed like man for the moment facing a veteran pitcher with a low nineties fastball. He doesn't overswing with runners in scoring position. Mauricio absolutely torched the baseball, but it was a fastball down the middle. So perhaps a teeny bit fortunate. I guess if these lefty right wyriting matchupss with glases Mendoza has pulled have been through baseball. Hold on, let me read this again. I wonder if these lefty writing matchups that Glasses Mendoza has pulled have been strong baseball intuition or simply going with traditional numbers. If the former, I'm excited to see what unfolds in 2026. And a bonus two-parter, if I listen to two of your episodes in a day, would I be consuming two rico broni as or two ricos bronya ? I'm gonna go with two rico broni as . That would be my final answer . And yes, I agree with you. I agree with you. I would have not used Ronnie Mauricio, as I mentioned at the top. Joseph writes, a lot of people that looked unprepared left around the sixth and seventh inning. I'd say 40% of the people left by the 10th. I came prepared in a winter jacket, wool sock, and long johns, and it was very comfortable. My Yankee fan friend who came with us said the Mets moving up the time was amazing, but this is just anecdotal. P.S. Mendy Magic with Ronnie Pinch It. You are the GOAT. Well, I am not the goat, but thank you very much. Yeah, when you go to a cold weather game , whether it's at four o'clock during the day or eight o'clock at night, it's all about being prepared. My advice, you take a baggie and you put that around your foot and then the socks on top of it that'll keep your feet warm and yeah you gotta go multi-layer it was cold over the weekend this past weekend or the weekend before that when the Mets were home but yeah, it felt like Tuesday was bad. And Wednesday is gonna be bad too. So if you're heading out there and you're able to make the game, good for you. I talked about this on episode six five. If you want to go back to the game time changes, uh, I think that you probably have less people able to come to the game by a start time change, even if you are making it a little bit easier to sit through nine or ten in this case, because of the weather. They'll do it again on Wednesday, and then they'll have a regular night game on Thursday. But a win is a win, baby. Four straight for the New York Mets.
