A drive home from what was an absolutely disgraceful , embarrassing LD times 10 performance as the Mets lose to the A's by a final score of 4-0. I mean, there's there's certainly a lot to talk about, but really the number one thing is they're not hitting. It is the most obvious statement that one can make. It's the statement that I will start off with because you can't win baseball games when you don't score runs. You can't win baseball games when you have the most extreme L of an LD offense that we have seen in a long time. And I know that this isn't new. The Mets went through slumps last year, so I don't want to act like this is only something that this new lineup could do. We saw plenty of LD offensive performances from Mets teams have passed, but in the early going of this season, we have seen a couple of incredible streaks from this offense. And I think what 's very depressing is not only if you you know spent two and a half hours in the cold, which is what I did, and I do want to apologize to my son Jed. Jet, I'm sorry, for making you sit in forty-five degree weather to watch that garbage offense. Do you accept my apology? He did. He said yes if you didn't hear it. But you look at this lineup. You look at Jared Young batting third. Jared Young batting th ird . You look up and down this lineup, and it looks LD even before the game starts. You know, it's not like this is a lineup that you look at and say, ah, we're gonna break out of it. I feel good . I mean up and down are just bats that you don't trust. Marcus Simeon. I know he's only been here for two weeks. Does anybody trust him? Is anybody Jared Young batting third, which I mentioned at the top? And then obviously you've got your veterans. And that's where I want to start. I want to start with Lindor because we said it on the last Rico . I've said it on Evident Tiki. I think we've all said it. We accept, we understand that the man gets off the bad starts. This is not new. Uh, we expect that Lindor will eventually put up the numbers that he always puts up. He will eventually get hot. He will eventually get clutch hits. I am not saying he's washed up. I'm not saying he's done. There's no extreme crazy opinions on Francisco Lindor . But they need him. They need him to do more than what we've seen. And even when he comes through with a base hit in this game. In the one inning where the Met offense actually showed something, the one inning where they put together a rally down one-nothing and they're set up with first and third and nobody out. And you've got Lindor committing a base running gaffe that took such a promising inning in which it should have been a lock for the Mets to tie this game. It should have been a lock to tie this game. And instead it short circuits an inning immediately. It cannot happen. It is happening. It is a problem . If you're not gonna hit and you're the best player on the team and, he is the best player on the team as long as Juan Soto is out. You cannot have the base running miscue that we saw and I forget the inning, the sixth inning of this game, the seventh inning of this game, whatever inning it was. And look, top to bottom , you're not exactly getting shut down by Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder in their prime. This wasn't Barry Zito. This was JT Ginn for forwardings, and then a very mediocre bullpen of the A's that fe atures guys coming in with ERA's near seven. I understand small sample size, but this should not have been a six-hit shuto ut . It can't happen. And again, as much as I say it can't happen, it's happening. But Francisco Lindor right now, if I had to rank the problems and and pretty much everybody in this lineup is a problem, Francisco L indor is number one because he is their best player and he has to be better than this. He has to. Look, he wasn't the only one. Bo Bachet came up in a big opportunity a few innings later, right after Lindor hit that weak round ball to his old buddy, Jeff McNeil. And Bob ette came up with a chance to have his moment, to have that moment he so desperately wants to have. And Bobachette has shown a pulse. Unlike Francisco Lindor, Bichette has given you a little bit over the last week or so. And what does he do? He strikes out in a huge spot. So it's a top-to-bottom problem. And look, after Lindor has the base running gaff that short circuited the first and third nobody out spot that they were in, Luis Roberts Jr. doesn't have to ground into a double play. And he does. Bounces into a very easy stra, ightforward 6-4-3 double play. And I don't want to kill Luis Robert Jr. But that was a huge moment. And he ended up getting booed. And look, I was in the ballpark. I don't think he necessarily got booed. I think what you heard from this crowd, from the people that actually showed up, is you just heard a booing of the team, a booing, a collective boo over the LD offense. And while Luis Robert Jr. still has presentable stats, he's one of the few guys in this lineup that has presentable stats, and he has shown a pulse offensively. When he grounds into a double play to short circuit that golden opportunity that the Mets had, it wasn't about him, it was about everybody. It was about the state of this offense right now that is just abysmal. And I I understand, I think we all know if we can be rational for a second that they're going to hit, like eventually this Met offense will score a run or two . Eventually they will break out. They are not this bad. I guess what I'm scared about fourteen games into the season, and this is a very fair question that I'm going to ask because this is such a new team. There's an ambulance coming, so I think I need to wait and let the ambulance go by. Um as I talk to myself, I want to be a responsible driver, so sometimes conversing with yourself helps. But what scares me about this offense, and obviously they missed one soda, we know that. Is I look at it, we all look at it and we wonder w what's it gonna actually be? You know, it's funny over the last couple of years with a familiar team , with a team that we were used to, despite the negatives, there would be that confidence of, oh, don't worry, they'll score runs. They'll be fine. I don't know if I could have that about this offense. I think that's one of the issues of a new team . Like, why should I be confident? Why should I believe this team's going to be fine? Or this offense is going to be fine? I actually have a level of confidence in the pitching, which I'll get to in a minute. But when it comes to the offense, it's tough to actually be that calm about it and feel like it's going to be completely okay. Like it'll be better than this. I understand. Like they'll score some runs, but eventually when Juan Soto is healthy and God knows they miss him, what does it look like? And that is something to be fearful about. Now, few other things I do want to get to. Let's get to the pitching because Clay Holmes was good. Obviously there were some concerns about Clay who left this game early. It looked like it was some kind of leg issue. I'm not sure if I'll be able to hear you Hoff. I apologize. I'm trying new equipment, which I try a lot with these drive home Ricos. But if there's an update on Clay Holmes, just give me a finger to shut up. And even if I can't hear you, you can at least update everybody else. But Klay was good. Like bottom line was Clay Holmes pitched well. And this rotation outside of David Peterson has pitched well. And I know sometimes in these losses, we all just want to bitch and whine about why they lost. And I think I've spent the first few minutes of this podcast doing that about this offense, rightfully so. But I do want to acknowledge the aspect of the team that has been playing well, but I also have a level of confidence in, which is the pitching. Clay Holmes was able to work through his mini issues. He really made one mistake in this game, and that was the base that he gave up to Shea Langaliers. That was it. I mean, outside of that, this was a real quality performance from Clay Holmes. And Clay continues to to prove to us, hopefully he's healthy and he's gonna be okay, but he continues to prove to us that he is a capable starting pitcher. And by the way, that's the thing about this team that even in the midst of this losing streak that they're involved in right now, that still gives me confidence, which is I really like the rotation, even with David Peterson struggling. I mean, Nolan McClain, obviously, we talked about Picture this. A curve in the road. A change in plans. Well, what do you say? With the all-new Audi Q3, the answer is always yes. Yes to adventure. Yes to escape. Yes to performance. Yes to comfort. Yes to right now . Because saying yes without hesitation, that's real lux ury. The all-new Audi Q3 made for the Yes Life . NMLS910457 . Freddie Peralta hasn't been great, but I think there's still a level of confidence in what he'll continue to be. Clay Holmes gave you a good performance as we've talked about. So I do believe in the pitching. It sucks when you waste these good starts. I mean, even with Clay coming out early, five and a third innings, one run, a pitch count of about eighty-.one I mean in all likelihood, maybe he would have gotten through that sixth inning with one out and one on, I think, is when he came out. Like maybe he gets the last two outs and that's it. So you're talking about a six inning, one run performance, which should be good enough to win. Should be good enough for you to say, I'm taking him out with a lead . So really solid performance by Clay Holmes, and Tobias Harris was odd because Tobias Harris, Jesus Christ, I'm stuck in basketball land. My apologies. Tobias Myers, I guess when I hear a Tobias, I I go to Harris, but Tobias Myers, despite his impression in the ninth inning , pitched well. Like he comes in and he gets out of that sixth inning. I think I missed his first pitch, the line drive by Jeff McNeil. We were, I forget if we were getting ice cream or not, because yeah, I give Jed a lot of credit. Ice cream on a 48-degree day. I I I even turned it down. And I'm a big Mr. Softie guy. We went in there to get the ice cream. He's like, You're going to get your chocolate? I was like, I can't do it. But if you want to go van illa on a 48-degree day, why the hell not? I mean, anything to make that LD offense and overall performance entertaining. But Myers gets those outs in the sixth thing. Gets the outs in the seventh, gets the outs in the eighth inning, continues to look really sharp. And I know there were people in 318, my section, really screaming at Carlos Mendoza. I don't think he did anything wrong with Tobias Myers. Like he pitched well, and I have been a proponent. I've said it on the RICO that when Myers comes into a game, similarly to Shaw Mania , I would maximize when he comes in. You know, this is a guy capable of being a starting pitcher, he's been a starting pitcher. So when he comes into a game, as opposed to just getting the sixth and seventh out of him and then maybe going to a high leverage reliever or two, let him finish the game. So I was all for giving Myers the chance to pitch the ninth inning. And look, he just I I I I don't know if it's he ran out of gas, like his pitch count was still low, and you're trying to keep him relatively stretched out in case you need him and who knows you may, especially with the questions around Clay Holmes coming out of this start, and certainly David Peterson's struggles . And who knows about Mania I know he'll be the first man up, but who knows about him with his velocity down ? But he just completely ran out of gas. And I give the Met fan a lot of credit because in that ninth inning there were a lot of boos. But when Myers was taken out of the game, he was not booed. There was a silence because I think the Met fan is smart enough to realize that again, we're not booing this player, we're booing the overall performance, we're booing the team. So when there are booze raining down at City Field in the ninth inning as the A's are blowing the game open, it isn't about necessarily the A's blowing open the game. It's the fact that this offense was so bad that you let a run being scored in the ninth, two being scored in the ninth, three being scored in the ninth, take a close game and essentially make it a blowout . You're booing the overall performance. But obviously, I don't blame Tobias Myers. It comes again back, much like it did in game three of the series against Arizona, as much as people wanted to make it about beatting right fielder, Vientos still at first base. It's always the offense, or at least right now it is . Do the math. Seventeen consecutive innings without scoring a run. And I'm sorry they weren't shut down by elite level starters. That's the part that makes it very frustrating. They were shut down, especially in this game, by, I'm trying to think of the guys that came in. Obviously JT getting started. Mark Leiter pitched a scoreless inning. Jack Perkins with his per first performance of the year throws two and a third scoreless innings, whatever it was. Elvis Alvarado , I mean, that's embarrassing. Who shut you down? That's embarrassing . Getting worked up thinking about it. And let me jump to some other thoughts. Uh Jeff McNeil. I listened to what Jeff McNeil said uh before the game and I I think the Met fans did a good job cheering him. He deserved to be cheered. I know that there's been a lot of discourse over the last few weeks and months and even years about trading Jeff McNeil, about his the puss on his face and you know, throwing his helmet and being upset and unhappy Jeff McNeil. Look, sometimes breakups are necessary. I think we all agree that it was time to move on from Jeff McNeil. No one is complaining about that. But we can admit that Jeff McN eil was a good Met. He wasn't a great Met. He wasn't an all-time Met, but he was a good Met. I thought the Met fans treated him well. They gave him an ISO ovation a few times. There was a tribute video, which I was able to see was a good video. He got a nice hand. Then they awkwardly put him on the camera for him to wave. And then even when he came up for his first at bat, he got a very loud, sustained ovation with a few people standing up. I don't know if I would have stood up necessarily. Uh, and I didn't. I gave him a golf clap like I said I would, but I thought the Met fans treated him well. Jeff McNeil was a fine Met, and look, he had a fine game. He had uh an extra base hit. I think he had two hits in this game. He made a great diving play to end an inning. So overall, you know, it wasn't an unbelievable game. It wasn't a three home run legendary game, but it was certainly a solid performance against his former team. They also played a very brief, very brief, not like McNeil, but a brief tribute video for Luis Severino, who I have to admit, I completely forgot about. You know, when when I'm coming to the ballpark tonight and I'm thinking about McNeil's return, I didn't even think about Luis Severino, probably because he's two years removed from being here. And also, let's face it, while Luis was a good Met and I appreciate his year here. It was a year. That was it. It was one year. But it's funny you think back to the decision that was made to let him go, and the decision to keep Sean Mania h. They kept him. They let Sevi go. They left Quintana go. Despite Severino's struggles, and he has struggled since the Mets let him go. I don't know. Wouldn't you guys rather have kept Severino than kept Manaya? Obviously, hindsight twenty-two. I know I was on record as being supportive of Maniah coming back. So I I understand I'm not trying to change history or change what I said, but I will freely raise my hand and say I was wrong. But don't we all kind of agree about that? Thinking about Sevi here and not being in Sacramento and not being with the A's, that maybe the results would be different. But hey, we can't go back into history, unfortunately. As far as the night was concerned, uh it was a very small crowd to be expected. It almost felt as small as the previous few days against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was not nearly as cold, but it was cold. Uh I would say it was relatively chilly, at least where I was sitting. There wasn't a constant breeze. But I guess it wasn't cold enough to to get my son jet from getting ice cream and then 'cause I I I I'm going through this route, I'm gonna let him make certain decis ions. Not all decisions, not the important ones, but small decisions. So I say to Jet in the fourth inning of this game when we get him the ice cream, I say, Would you like to sit inside? The Piazza Club still had a few empty seats if you wanted to sit inside, warm up, watch an inning or two on the TV. And he said, No, I want to go back outside. And I said, All right. Okay . I think that's a horrible decision. But all right, you know what? I'm going to let you make that decision so you can learn from your mistakes and uh yeah anything later he's like can we go can we go inside uh oh boy but overall my, fellow Met fans, let me give you a brief State of the Union . It's not good right now. It is early. It is cold out. Uh my level of concerns is not a DEF CON five by any stretch, DEF CON 5, DEF CON 5, whatever the hell it is . But I don't have the same confidence. This is the way I'll phrase it to everybody. I don't have the same confidence that the offense will just be fine . That maybe I would have had last year. And a lot of that is the newness. A lot of that is the uncertainty. Uh there are a lot of questions around this lineup. Obviously Jorge Polanco was not in the lineup yet again . The Mets announced before the game he's not going to go on the injured list. I heard David Stearns refer to him as Polo. That was his nickname, which I thought was weak. But Jorge Polanco has been a nothing. Let's just be honest. He's one of the additions. He has been a nothing. Is he going to be healthy? Is this Achilles going to affect him? I mean, when they signed him, one of the first things we talked about was the uncertainty of his health. Marcus Simeon was one of the other veterans they brought in. He's 35, 36. Like, he looks bad right now. You know, I'll tell you with Lindor, he'll be fine. That this is your typical bad start for Francisco. As frustrating as it is, he'll be fine. I can't say that about Marcus Simeon. Can any of us say that about Marcus Sime on? I think I can say that with more confidence about Bo Bach et, and he's had his moments of signs of life, but overall is still not hitting. I've been encouraged by Luis Robert Jr., but you're relying on Brett Beatty. They continue to rely on Carson Bench. Oh, uh thoughts pop into my head, especially when I'm driving and I don't have my scorebook in front of me. Big mistake by Bench not being able to advance on that dirt ball read. Well, other than going back to college and obtaining a bachelor's degree in accounting with a minor in finance, then interning somewhere and becoming fluent in all tax forms, but that might be hard to accomplish before tax day. So maybe just stick with Tax Act. Tax Act, let's get them over with I think Lindor was up. It was when Lindor hit the weak ground ball to second in the eighth inning that advanced bench to second before the Bachetapat . And I don't know, it may not necessarily change the inning, but right now, when you're Carson Bench and you're hitt noting a lot, though he did have some good at bats in this game, you can't make that mistake. And that was a big little mistake. Big little mistake. That's how I'd phrase that one. Big little mistake by Carson Bench. So my worry meter is kind of at a a four and a half to five. I'm more annoyed than I am worried, but none of us can really trust this offense until we see it. The pitching I feel good about. Hopefully, they get a good performance from Kodai Senga, who will get the extra day of rest because of the off day the Mets had on Monday. But the offense has to wake up. We need to see a sign of life. Oh, and I should brag, humble brag, that I nailed it with this lineup. Yesterday on the Rico, or an episode ago on the RICO, I predicted that Vientos would sit and we would get our first Ronnie Mauricio start and Jared Young would get a start at first base. The only thing I got wrong is I thought Mauricio DH Beshet would play third, but we obviously saw Bo Bobashek get his first DH day today with Mauricio playing third base. Mauricio was not impressive. I mean honestly, who was? You go up and down this lineup. Like, I guess Alvarez had some good at bats. I think he drew dra aw walk walk and had a clean single to center . Oh, I give you another little positive, tiny one. Tiny itsy bitsy positive on a three-game losing streak. The bunting. On the last Rico, we played that Steve Gelbs report that he filed about how the Mets are really working on bunting, and we saw Jared Young break up the no-hitter in the fourth inning with a little bunt roller up the third baseline that was fo ul and then veered back into fair territory for a base hit. So we are seeing the Mets effectively bunt. Oh, let me do a little uh new microphone check. I I don't know why, Hoff. I have a feeling I'm not going to be able to hear you. So what we'll do is uh why don't you pop on, give us a quick minute or so on how you feel about the team. And if I don't hear you, I will give you like a thumb down that shows you I cannot hear you, but keep talking and then give me some kind of signal when you're done, I guess. That that's how I would say it uh visually. So Hoff, take it away. Uh I'm here. Do you got me? I do hear you. All right.. This is wrong Uh first of all, let's get the update on Clay Holmes. He says he's very optimistic that he'll be able to make his next start, but again, they really won't be able to tell till tomorrow when he wakes up. Um but it doesn't seem too serious. So that that that's good news. What was the other part that you were wanted me to uh answer for you? I think it was just Clay Holmes, to be honest with you. Really, how do you feel about this team? I know you're as negative as anybody. Oh, yeah. I'm still negative. I mean, but the here's the thing is that this is what I saw for majority of the first couple weeks, like the first week of the season. Their offense is so nothing right now. And and I you know what the biggest thing is that's frustrating ? It's not even the offense. It's the defense hasn't been great. And then I see, yes, you could sit there and say Francisco Lindore can't get picked off at third base like he did. But Nick Kurtz made a perfect play. Like he did got a good scoop, was able to like look back Lindor, didn't worry about first or second, and made a perfect throw to third base to get Lindor. I that's the best defensive play I've seen all season long in any Met game whatsoever. Mets haven't played any tight defense like that. So to me, that that's the frustrating part . All right, let me let me address this defense thing. I know David Stearns met the media before the game. Uh we talked about how he usually does maybe one media session for a homestand, so it's not a surprise that he met the media. I don't know why he picked today. I guess the middle of the homestand, maybe the Mets on a little bit of a losing streak. But David addressed the defense, and I want to address the defense in that fielding Bible is saying that the Mets have been a top three defense in Major League Baseball. According to defensive runs saved, the Mets have been an elite defensive team. According to uh defensive runs saved, Brett Beatty has been actually a really good right fielder in a very small sample size. I am going to meet you in the middle and meet everybody in the middle by saying I haven't watched this team this year and felt they're an elite defensive team. But I also haven't felt that they're the mess that I don't want to say you're describing, but others have described. I think what's going on right now is a little bit of anger at David Stearns, which I have some levels of too. Do not get me wrong, especially as this season goes on if the offense doesn't show the fight that it needs to show. And this offense isn't productive. But I think people are so clinging to the comment he made about run prevention that anytime there's any kind of play in question, we go back to this kind of tired narrative of but they got all these guys out of position to f this is a lie. What's he talking about? When the reality is it's somewhere in the middle, Feldiing Bible is basically saying the Mets are an elite defensive team. And yet we are harping on their defense as it's their main issue. It is not their main issue. Again, I don't think they've been an elite defensive team. I also don't think it's been their biggest problem. I talked about it yesterday or two days ago or whenever the hell we did the last Rico . Too much was made out of the play by Beatty in right field. Too much of it was made. Too much of it was even made on the Vientos play. Yes, Zach Kurtz made a great throw on a defense or a base running miscue by Francisco Lindor. And you're gonna night, you're gonna want to see elite defensive plays from this defense. They're not scoring runs. That is the problem. Their defense has not really been a problem. Has there been some moments like the drop by Carson Benz, the ball that dropped in in St. Louis? Yeah. Yes, that play should have been made. Absolutely. But I think because of anger at David Stearns, which a lot of it is rightfully so, e even if it's too early necessarily to to rush to judgments about the offense, but it's about the offense. That's what it should be about right now. So I think at times we are making way too much about the defense. This game that they played on Friday night against the A's was not about the defense. Jared Young made some good plays at first base. He did. Uh Marcus Simeon has been very solid at second. There was one kind of issue with Lindor throwing flat footed on a double play attempt that I would have some quipples about. But outside of that, this was a clean defensive game. They are not hitting. So when I see the defensive run save stat, I'm mixed about it because I do not think that I at least my eye test has told me they're elite, but my eye test has also told me they're not bad. It hasn't been the problem. And I think that the anger that a lot of Met fans have at David Stearns and the usage of the term run prevention is now being used aga inst them all the time. As far as what David said at his press conference, uh the only takeaway I really had was that they are planning on being very patient with Carson Bench. That was my biggest takeaway. I I didn't really learn much else from the ten minutes of uh conversation that he had with the media. Uh I I would actually argue most of the questions were about Carson Bench in terms of what kind of runway he has, how patient they'll be. I I thought he was showed some signs in this game on Friday against the A's, but the message you got from David Stearns is that we are a ways away. Not that it can't happen, but we are a ways away from the Mets making some kind of decision on Carson Benjamin . Uh and should be the headline. They really miss Juan Soto. He they they do. He is an elite bat that changes so much about this offense. Not that he is an elixir for everything. He is one guy , but he constantly gets on base. So you're giving guys behind or are behind they miss him. And right now the Mets have to find a way to survive. Uh they're on a three-game losing streak. It's not a full crisis yet , but it could get there. Lose another one. Lose a one after that. Remember, they're going to Los Angeles next week. They are going to Chicago. This is not an easy road trip that they are facing. So it is important for them to find ways, especially against mediocre pitching, to get this offense going and scratch out a couple of victories. So that's where things stand. Let me check if uh Jet is still up. Jed are you still up? He's out. Much like the Met Bats, he fell asleep. Luckily he was able to make it through night innings.
