We have just lived through the eleven hottest years ever recorded Today this city and far beyond are experiencing the hottest day of the year with higher temperatures to come Peter Murrell, the former SNP chief executive, is jailed for embezzlement. Recordings of his police interviews show their shock at his spending Over nineteen thousand pounds is exclusively of pens alone. frrankly an outrageous amount of money to be spended on pens Wh happen you Sakkia Starmer and Andy Burnham meet for the first time since the Makerfield B election Nigel Farage concedes the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner may disagree with him on his five million pound gift. I believe it to be a wholly private matter The status commommissioner may take a different view. And a murky business will look at the row in Washington over the reflecting pool Many schools across England and Wales are partially or fully closed today with more set to shut tomorrow as temperatures continue to rise. Britain's biggest train operator has warned against all but essential travel tomorrow when a Met office red warning for extreme heat comes into force Temperatures today did not surpass the all time June record of thirty five point six Celsius, set in nineteen seventy six, but forecastters warn that it's likely to be overtaken in the coming days In a moment, we'll hear from our correspondents across Europe, where dozens of people have died And our climate editor will look at how we can adapt to higher temperatures But first, here's Jonah Fisher with the latest on the impact of the heat wave dayay at Wyinthorpe Primary in Nottinghamshire and a tight finish in the sprint An event that might have fallen foul of the rising temperatures saved by a last minute timing change, as headadmaster Rob Cook explains. We had a sort look at the weather forecast and saw it was hot temperatures this afternoon, so we moved this morning, moved Sports dayay to an early kickoff to try and beat the sunshine and the rays Successful morning With even hotter weather on its way, hundreds more schools plan to close completely or finish early Today an amber weather warning was in place across much of southern England and Wales, whilst Scotland and Northern Ireland recorded their hottest days of the year so far But as BBC weather forecaster Ben Rich explains, More records are likely to be broken over the next few days. The thunderstorms that swept across parts of the UK last night took some of the energy out of the atmosphere and lowered temperatures slightly compared with what we were forecasting. But they are set to rise again tomorrow to around thirty seven or thirty eight Celsius about fifteen degrees higher than average Tomorrow, a red alert comes into effect for a large part of southern England and South Wales. Robin May from the UK Health Security Agency says that means the weather is considered to be dangerous and a threat to life. Stay very well hydrated, so plenty of water, Avoid caffeine, alcohol, those kind of drinks that dehydrate you. Stay out of the sunshine, especially during the middle of the day And wherever possible, do what you can to keep your building, your home as cool as you can. So draw the curtains to keep the sun out Temperatures in the high thirties Celsius are expected, with a severe impact on transport and possibly power infrastructure Britain's largest train operator Govia Thameslink, which runs southern, Thameslink, the Gatwick Express, and Great Northern has warned people not to travel for the next two days unless absolutely necessary with speed restrictions and short notice cancellations likely. Some of those lucky enough not to be on the trains or at school Enjoyed a cooling dip at the London Fields Lido in Hackney this morning Oinions were mixed on the coming high temperatures. I find it quite unbearable and I think it is a sign of climate change and I just think that London is not a city that's meant to be hot. The weather's really hot, but ultimately it's not good for a lot of people and I think we need to be more aware. It looks like we're all having fun here. but there's lots of people living in homes which are overheating They've got health problems. I mean, I think we wait all year for some sun so we should stop complaining right The high temperatures aren't confined to the UK. a heat wave is being experienced across Western Europe, causing disruption and claiming lives In a moment, we'll hear from Bethany Bell in the German city of Leipzig and Guy Hedgeko in Madrid But first, here's our Paris correspondent, Hugh Schofield After sweating through its hottest night, France has had its hottest day ever recorded. a nationwide average of nearly thirty degrees Celsius, but with some places breaking forty. The Prime Minister Sebastian Lacornu, chaired a cabinet meeting dedicated to the heat and announced that hospitals would to be placed on a higher emergency footing. He also revealed that since Saturday, around forty, mainly young people have died of drowning as they sought to cool off in rivers and canals Near Touls in the south, a nuclear power station has stopped producing electricity because the waters of the river goon, which it uses for cooling, have become too warm In the city of Lillons, authorities have allowed access to some museums to be free of charge to encourage people to come into the air conditioned buildings. But at the Louvre in Paris, the opposite has happened. There, some galleries risk overheating, so the museum is closing early. Now here's Bethany Bell in Leipzig In Germany, people are bracing for record breaking June temperatures on Friday when it could get as hot as forty Celsius in the west and southwest of the country Like in France, many Germans have been swimming to cool off sometimes with fatal consequences. Six people are believed to have drowned this weekend, including a teenager who lost his life while swimming in a canal in Gzenkirchen Police are currently investigating the deaths of three people whose bodies were recovered from the Rhine iver on Monday. The deaths are not believed to be suspicious. The German Lifesaving Association has urged people not to underestimate the dangers of swimming. The authorities say water temperatures in the Rhine and Moseelle rivers are increasing and could reach up to twenty seven degrees in places over the coming days. Such temperatures lead to falling oxygen levels which could hurt fish and other aquatic life. Now over to Guy Hedcoo, in Madrid Most areas of mainland Spain are seeing temperatures in the high thirties or low forties Celsius The hottest part of the country today is the southern region of Andalusa, with temperatures of forty four Celsius near the city of Corodoma That kind of heat in the south is not that unusual in midsummer. But it is very rare in June Another unusual feature of this heat wave has been the extremely high temperatures in northern Spain, which is normally relatively cool The Basqu country, which is on a red weather alert, is seeing temperatures of forty Celsius Local authorities in some towns and cities have reduced the cost of entry to public swimming pools And in the northern city of Log Rono, water sprinklers have been switched on for the public to stand under Tonight is the festival of San Juan, when traditionally fireworks are let off and bonfires lit in many towns across Spain But this year, with concerns about the fire risk posed by the extremely dry conditions, celebrations will be restrained. Record breaking temperatures are likely to test Britain's preparedness to deal with the worst consequences of a warming planet, as our climate editor Justin Roolat reports It was a weather double whammy for parts of the UK today. First came the storms heat. in London, a community centre has been converted into a cool space, an air conditioned sanctuary where local people can find respite from the soaring temperatures. Walking from out there to here was just a relief. Especially with half of us like menopausal, It's not good to be around us It peace tran tranquility. On little fridge everyverybody wants to step into the fridge when it's really hot outside. so I think that's really important, especially for some of our elder. The fact such spaces are deemed necessary is a sign of the UK's new climate reality. Our homes, schools, hospitals, roads and drains tested by extremes they were never designed to endure Emma Howard Boyd is the co chair of the National Heat Risk Commission When we experienced forty degrees back in twenty twenty two, key parts of our infrastructure were not fit to operate. So we saw railway lines closed down, hospitals shut down, widespread impacts across our school networks. and we need to start making both short term exations but longer term. The UN Secretary General Antonio Gutere was in London today warning as he so often has before of the need for the world to take action to tackle the root of the problem Our world is facing a tale of two crises cllimate crisis pushing us toward higher temperature and closer to catastrophic dipping points. And an energy crisis exposing the folly of a world hooked or hydrocarbons This crisis may seem separate, but they share the same destructive origin Fossil fuels Meteorologists say the most striking aspect of this heat wave is its timing. Temperatures close to are all time high in June, well before the usual peak in July and August. It seems that in a warming climate, the extremes are not just getting hotter They are arriving sooner The former chief executive of the SNP, Peter Murrell, has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison A he admitted embezzling more than four hundred thousand pounds from the party. His lawyer told the High Court in Edinburgh that Murrell had enough funds to repay the sum He showed no emotion as he was sentenced and then handcuffed to a prison officer and led out of the courtroom Here's our Scotland editor, James Cook For more than twelve years, Peter Murll spent the SNP's money on vehicles including a motor home, luxuries such as coffee machines and watches, and mundane household goods including super gllue and curry paste. Prosecutors have released a recording of detectives interviewing Mudel, asking why he had spent thousands of pounds on fountain pens. Over nineteen thousand pounds is exclusively of pens alone frrankly, an outrageous amount of money spend them on ps? Even the detective in the room could barely hear Murll's repeated, whispered replies, No comment A the highigh courourt in Edinburgh today, the judge Lord Young said the sixty one year old had committed a calculated crime of dishonesty He noted that Murll had cooperated with social workers as they had prepared a report on his offending but said it did not shed much light on why he had done it. You identified possible factors arising from your background, working life and personal circumstances But in truth, it is very difficult to get a clear picture for what drove your actions Many of the high value items acquired by you were not even used Lord Young said the prison sentence of five years and three months should act as a deterrent to any senior officials and other large organizations who might be tempted to abuse their position Moddel's lawyer, Joh Sully in KC, said his client felt guilt and remorse and he accepted causing psychological, emotional and financial harm to the SNP and others. The accused is now an individual whelmed by feelings of embarrassment and shame Since his arrest on fifth april twenty twenty three, He has gradually withdrawn from social contact and for many months prior to the tendering of his plea He lived in almost total isolation at times to the detriment of his health. Mr. Scullion said Marle would pay back the money and appeared to have the personal means to do so. Nicolas Sturgeon was not in court for the sentencing of her estranged husband and her name was not mentioned. But the former First Mister still faces difficult questions about how the SNP under her leadership failed to spot the crimes being committed by the man she loved. The goovernment has announced that there will be no major new policies or spending decisions during the transition to a new Prime Minister Sakir Starmer has also held talks with Andy Burnham, the only candidate currently vying to replace him Meanwhile, the Chancellor has said that she's confident the government's defense investment plan will be published before the NATO summit in July, before the Prime Minister stands down Here's our political correspondent Im Watson Adiburn Metzakir Starm up face to face today. Both men know that Makerfield's MP could become the nation's PM in a matter of weeks K Kir has said that any Labour leadership contender should get access to the civil serervice to set out their plans Andnt he's undertaken not to launch any new policy initiatives or make major spending decisions before his successor Iin Situ But there is one significant and contentious policy that will be delivered before then nominations for Labour Leader and therefore Prime Minister closose on july sixteenth, and if Mr. Burnham is the only candidate, he'll move into number ten the day after But today, the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves suggested that the defeence investment plan will be unveiled before july the seventh the date of the next NATO summit. The Ministry of Defence are producing the deffence investment plan that will meet the scale of the challenges and meet the moment with increased readiness I am confident that the new defence investment plan will be published before the NATO Anchoror suummit. It will involve more money, spent more effectively and will meet the scale of challenges facing our country. forormer Deence Secretary John Hey resigned over the draft plan, which he denounced as inadequate Burnham's team hasn't commented on the timing of the plan or whether he'd revise its contents Mr. Burnham intends to set out his own stall for the Labor leadership next week with a speech on the economy. Iran says no such plans exist and that substantive negotiations on nuclear issues have yet to begin For all the claim and counter claim, a process is underway As promised, the U.S. has already issued waivers to allow Iran to export oil. Both sides are speaking of progress with the US. Nigel Farage has defended receiving a five million pound gift from a billionaire donor in the months before he was elected as an MP Telling the BBC it was not the public's business to know how much of it he had spent. The issue is the subject of an ongoing investigation by Parliament's standard Watchdog The reform UK leader has defended receiving the money, insisting it was unconnected to his current political roles L correspondent, Phil Kemp reports The reformed UK leader has described the five million pounds he personally received from the billionaire Christopher Harbourne in early twenty twenty four as an unconditional gift to pay for his security and a reward for campaigning for Brexit In addition, the Thailand based businessman gave a total of twelve million pounds to the party last year and has also donated to the Conservative Party in the past cash given to Mr. Farage is currently being investigated by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner And in a testy exchange with Sally Nuent on BBC Breakfast this morning, Mr. Farll said it was not the public's business to know how much of the five million he'd already spent He said he could have spent the money on cars if he'd wanted to, but spending it on his security meant he could get on with his job and not worry about it in the long term. No one cares. Apart from the media, no one cares. No one cares at all. The parliamentary standards watchdog care because they are investigating. Well they are, you're right. There's been a complaint received compomlaint from the Conservative Party chairman They're investigating it. We'll see what they say. I'm absolutely convinced I've done nothing wrong in any way at all. I also know But since I was elected as an MP, I've taken zero in personal expenses I'm very careful and very cautious about these things. I believe it to be a wholly private matter. The Standards Commissioner may take a different view. Opposition parties have questioned whether under the parliamentary rules, Mr Farard should have declared the cash because it was given in the twelve months before he was elected an MP He says he's absolutely convinced he's done nothing wrong A fourteen year old boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the body of a girl was found in South Wales. Gwent Police say formal identification is yet to take place, but the family of the fourteen year old, named only as Lily, has been informed She was reported missing and was last seen on the high street in Bliner in South Wales last weekend nineteen people have been injured after a bus overturned in Cararthenshire. But problems emerged within days of it being reopened to the public, with algae blooms turning the water green and large chunks of blue coating peeling off The president has blamed the pool's problems on vandals, claiming that someone cut a long gash and poured fertilizer into the heavily patrolled public landmark by CBS News if he had any proof these incidents took place, President Trump responded. Who would think that somebody would go into a pool and take a knife and start cutting it? you proof of that? Well, let's put it this way When you have a three hundred and fifty, I think it's three hundred fifty, not two hundred fifty, a three hundred and fifty foot slit From one end to the other You think that's proof? You think that's proof. Pys have been down there today looking for that slit that you mentioned. and there' no ev. All you'd have to do is see the parks department. they'll show it to you see see The Secretary But I it So far, at least five people have been arrested in connection with the vandalism, with several others issued federal citations. It will now be drained again for repairs on an unclear timeline, with considerable controversy swirling over a no bid contract for the work given to a company run by a Trump donor and neighbor of the president's Mar a Lago property in Florida The President of Europe's airports lobby has said concerns about the EU's new digital border control system are keeping him and other industry leaders awake at night The so called entry exit system, or EES has already been blamed for extensive delays, which in some cases have led to passengers missing their planes. Here's our business correspondent Theo Legget The entry exit system requires most passengers from outside the EU to register facial scans and fingerprints when they first cross into the Schengen free travel area Further biometric checks are meant to take place each time they cross the border after that In some areas, the system has been working well But in others, it's been blamed for queues and long delays On occasion, aircraft have left half empty, because passengers have been unable to get through border control on time. Mr. Shulter told a conference that politicians should stop pretending that the system was working just fine when it wasn't He added that he didn't know how airports would cope as traffic increased over the summer Speaking to radio four, he said passengers would face lengthy waits. In general, I would say it's in between one and a half to three hours, but sometimes even more. and even one and a half to three hours would not be acceptable at all. We would lose our passengers. European countries are allowed to suspend biometric controls if queues become too long until early September But after that, they'll be unable to do so. Mrter Schulter warned this could cause the system to collapse, and he said border authorities should be allowed more flexibility in order to avoid future chaos Campaigners have lost two high court challenges against the expansion of Gatwick airport The two point two billion pounds scheme will bring Gatwick's standby runway into routine use, adding around one hundred thousand flights a year Ppponents argued the government had failed to properly assess the climate impact, but a high court judge ruled ministers lawfully weighed the environmental effects against the economic benefits pains say they're considering an appeal The government is considering whether it can make reliable news sources more visible on social media With a growing number of people relying on the online platforms for news, there are concerns about what sources are appearing at the top of people's feeds. More from our media correspondent, David Silito. In the UK, around forty percent of people get some or most of their news from social media globally It is now the number one source for news. But what that news is is determined by algorithms devised by tech firms the Gvernment is today launching a consultation on ways of giving greater prominence to what it describes as trustworthy news content, which might include, amongst others, local news websites and public service broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV, and Channel four, answering questions from children on BBC Newsound Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy explained. She feels there's a generational information golf There's lots of things on the internet that you can't trust. There's people putting things onto the internet that are not true. and it can be very difficult to find the good things that you know that you can trust. Now we think it's wrong that parents and grandparents can find things they trust because they're watching it on the television, but children can't because they're watching it on their tablets and phones. The process for deciding what content providers are to be deemed trustworthy has yet to be determined The proposals also include looking at how to ensure the survival of public service broadcasters such as the BBC, ITV and Channel four And also the question of whether traditional TV transmission be replaced with an internet only system It's been revealed that a second ransom note sent days after the eighty four year old mother of a high profile American TV presenter was abducted, claimed that she had died Nancy Guthrie, whose daughter, Savannah Guthrie presents on NBC, went missing after she was dropped off at her home by relatives in January Speaking on NBC in March, the presenter said that she believed a number of ransom notes about her mother's disappearance were false But she also said that her family believed the two initial notes were authentic Here's our North America correspondent, Shima K Little The full contents of two ransom notes sent to Nancy Guthrie's family following her abduction haven't been officially revealed Savannah Guthrie has said that she and her family believe them to be genuine An initial ransom note was sent the day after Nancy Guthrie went missing in late January, demanding millions of dollars in Bitcoin for her release U. S. media outlets are now reporting that a second note was sent in the days after her kidnapping, saying that she died It apologized for Nancy's death, stating it was unintentional. This morning, Savannah Guthrie addressed the latest news on NBC's Today show becoming visibly emotional and begging people with information to come forward. You know I don't have any comment on this story and' not involved in our coverage U But I can't pretend I'm not here And so since I am, I wanted to just take the opportunity to too ask people to really to beg people to come forward. Somebody knows something We are in agony We cannot be at peace. The local shheriff's department declined to comment on the latest reports, saying that the investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance remains active and ongoing Now football.
