Nigel Farraage, who's facing scrutiny over money and benefits he received before he became an MP, resigns his seat, but says he'll fight on and run again. This will be versus the establishment by election It's a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment. He's cracking under the pressure, says Kemmy Badenock, as for the soon to go prrime Minister This is a desperate stunt from Nigel Farage And it's obvious why he' doing it he is up to his neck in slez. We'll have details of the reform leadeer's announcement, reaction from his constituency and the analysis of our political editor Prince Ary loses his high court privacy case against the Daily Mail's publisher. The presidential ambitions of France's hard right leader, Marine L Pen hang in the balance after a court upholds her conviction for misusing EU funds President Trump arrives at the NATO summit in Ankara and immediately berates his allies for their stance on Iran. In the case of the United Kingdom, the prrime mininister, I guess he's no longer there. Maybe because of this. It was a very unpopular thing he did. He said No we'll help after the war is over Ukraine's intelligence serervice says the body of a woman suspected of having carried out a bomb attack in Monaco has been found near Kyiv And it's an absolutely unbelievable amount of money, especially to raise on one but The first edition making waves and more than twenty five thousand pounds for an Oxfan bookshop The leader of Reform UK, Nigel Farage has announced he'll be standing down as the member of Parliament for Clackton. tririggering a by election, he'll stand in He' been facing intense scrutiny over financial support he received from a convicted fraudster before he became an MP Labour has asked the electoral Commission to investigate the funding. He's already facing a parliamentary investigation over a separate five million pound gift from a reform UK donor before he was elected Mr. Farage said he'd done nothing wrong Political correspondent Jack Femwick reports. Ngel Farge is already being investigated by Parliament's standards Commissioner for an undeclared five million pound payment given to him by the crypto billionaire and reformed donor Christopher Harborne He's always insisted the money was an unconditional personal gift, which did not need to be declared. At the weekend, the Sunday Times reported that George Cotrell, a close ally who was once convicted of fraud in the US, had provided financial support to Mrter Farage for security and social media staff It's not known whether the Standards Commissioner will widen his investigation But if he was to issue a serious punishment, that could trigger a by election in Mr. Faralg's Clackton constituency In a statement today, mister Farroge said he would trigger a by election himself, which he said would be the people versus the establishment. It's a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment So frankly tell them Where to go And that is why I will putting my name forward to stand in this by election. I will fight to win, I will fight to continue the political revolution that reform has started. And I would say this to you, the voters of Clackton. If I win, you win. becausecause if I lose, they win. He said he was the most attacked politician of modern times accused the media of haranging his family and insisted he'd done nothing wrong The Standards Commissioner's investigation will now be paused, but can then resume if he is re elected. If he is then found to have broken the rules and receives a lengthy suspension from the House of Commons, it could mean a second by election in Clackton is possible Speaking the NATO summit in Turkey, Sakiistama described Nigel Farraroji's announcement as a desperate stunt. It's obvious why he's doing it. he is up to his neck in slez politics It should be about improving the lives of millions of people, not about personal gain, not about hiding dodgy donations. And I think the public will see this for exactly what it is The liiberal Democrat leadeader Sre Davavey has called on other parties to stand aside and refuseed to give oxygen to what he described as Mr. Farraage's vanity project Restore Britain's roup at low when the conservative leader Kemmy Badenoch confirmed their parties would not put forward candidates Ms Badenoock said Nigel Farage was cracking under the pressure of scrutiny of his finances, and the Green Party leader Zach Polansky described Mr. Farage as a grifter Reform have offered to pay for the by election from their own party coffers, though it's not clear whether electoral rules would allow that to happen Some formal parliamentary procedure needs to take place before Nigel Farage officially steps down as an MP, but his party hopes the by election will happen next month Our reporter Harry Lowe has been speaking to Mr Farage's constituents in Clackton on the sea Front At a general election two years ago, Nigel Farage was returned here with forty six percent of the vote But on the sunny seafront in Clapton The decision to run again so soon has caught most people by surprise S' ever be scasty. I didn't even know. it's crazy, isn't it? I didn't even know. So what happens now? I couldn't care less. I don't do politics endnd of Some here also have a view on whether he should have declared the five million pounds he received from the businessman, Christopher Harborne before he became an MP. You can't actually say where he's going from or he's just making up so much stories about it is I just think it's unbelievable to be honest with you that you can stand for MP again. I'm very disappointed because he's promised all these things he's gone back on his promise and basically he just is another one in it for himself, money. I think it's a shame. I think he started the reform thing. Everyone trusted him, all the area liked him. He was pretty straight talking other than the other normal politicians And let's face it, they're all trying to get money somewhere or another. They just I think they just slurred him. I'd like to him have him to stand again and we vote for him again Ultimately, what will matter though, is how the people of Clapton vote when the by election is held. Our political editor, Chris Mason, has this assessment on Mr Farage's strategy in calling this by election We are in for a split screen summer Andy Burnham in all likelihood on one side as the new Prime Minister, and Nigel Farage on the other as the contender in Clackton The two men who will shape more than most of the political tussle of the coming years vying for attention coming weeks. For Mr. Farage, a master of political theatre, this move, widely derided as a stunt by his critics, lets him seize attention and the initiative His rivals are now forced to respond tenor of their reactions so far suggests many, including labour may choose not to stand, avoiding as they may see it, offering walk on actors that reforms pantomime By election was a possible consequence of the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards inquiry anyway. this way the reform leader embraces that challenge rather than having it forced upon him He's also attempting to frame it as a question about where power, sovereignty really lies with the people or with those he pejoratively labels the establishment, including those who have long been widely seen by many as part of the architecture of checks and balances at the heart of our democracy, such as the adjudicators of parliamentary rules and robust journalism Ajil Farraage hasn't escaped scrutiny about his conduct But not for the first time He's grabb the agenda Prince Harry and six other defendants, including Sir Elton John, have lost their privacy case against the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday newspapers. The High Court in London dismissed all the claims, saying the claimants had failed to prove their allegations, which included claims of phone hacking and other methods of illegal information gathering. Our correspondent Tom Simons has been at the High Court Prince Harry joined forces in twenty twenty two with Sir Elton John, his husband, David Furnish, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, the actors Elizabeth Hurley, and Sadie Frost, and the former Lberal Democrat Minister Sir Simon Hughes, to Sue Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail on Sunday The case came to a head during ten weeks in court earlier this year hearings attended in part by the prince. Dozens of stories were discussed. Good journalism, newspaper reporters told the court. Intrusive and unlawful, the claimant said. The judge broadly agreed with the reporters Discussing one article about Prince Harry, Mr. Justice Nicklin said, I accept he found the article intrusive and was genuinely concerned by how journalists appeared to know private information concerning his relationships. But suspicion, he said, even understandable suspicion, is not proof The Daily Mail's former editor, Paul Daker, who the BBC asked to interview, released this video statement The truth is that this trumped up action whichich has cost well over fifty million pounds and wasted a huge amount of valuable court time should never have been brought to trial The judge refused to let the claimants make general allegations against the mail newspapers. They had to produce specific evidence of every claim. They tried and they failed. Baroness Doreen Lawrence made the most damaging allegations that she was bugged and had her phone tapped by the Daily Mail reporter who was campaigning in print to try to secure justice for her murdered son Stepevenen. The BBC's been told she was approached by Prince Harry and his lawyers who suggested she take legal action But the journalist Graham Johson, closely associated with the claimant's legal team, rejects any suggestion it wasn't her decision She's a very highly respected figure spent her life fighting the judiciary And the political bodies for justice for her son. You know she's not going to be persuaded by me to bring a phony case or some hot shot lawyers. It's beyond the realms. And she wasn't. It didn't happen. This is a verdict which has exonerated dozens of male journalists accused in court. The publisher says it has vindicated their work The High Court's decision came as Prince Harry was in London for the first of a series of events and meetings to do with the Invictus Games, a sporting tournament for injured veterans which he founded That visit has been somewhat overshadowed as our culture reporter Noranji reports For Prince Harry and his team, the timing of this judgment cannot have been worse The Duke was speaking at an Invictus games event in central London this afternoon, exactly as the news of his defeat in court was being announced with journalists checking their phones to try and work out what had happened His speech at Chatham House celebrated the injured veterans taking part in the Invictus games and the powers of their recovery. That unconquered spirit isn't unique to one nation It belongs to all of us And recognizing that shared humanity is what has allowed this community to grow beyond an event into a global movement The Invictus games are a cause he cares deeply about This event was totally overshadowed by the judgment How are you feeling, Harry Are you going to appeal Leaving the venue, Prince Harry didn't make any statement to the assembled media But there's no doubt the court ruling is a devastating result for him and one that he will feel personally as well His crusade against the press has defined so much of what he's done in recent years. And this was also widely expected to be his last major campaign against the newspapers whether that remains the case in light of this judgment is now unclear The case brings to an end the long running claims made about phone hacking our media editor Katie Razzle, reflects on the original scandal and its impact The hacking scandal shone a light into the darkest corners of British journalism But more than twenty years after it first began to emerge, the end of this case is a moment of closure Police first discovered that news of the W journalists had intercepted voicemail messages of members of the royal family back in two thousand five. Arrests and convictions of the paper's royal correspondent and a private investigator followed The rogue reporter defence, claimed by the paper's publishers, was later blown apart, With the real dynamite coming in twenty eleven, with the news that people working for the tabloid had accessed the messages of the murdered schoolgirl Millie Dowler giving her parents false hope that she was alive It shocked the nation profoundly, forcing the paper's owner, Rupert Murdoch to shut it down That same month, july twenty eleven, he said sorry to a committee of MPs before being attacked with a cream pie. This is the most humble day of my career I would like all the victims Phone hacking to know how completely and deeply sorry I am then for campaigners and people whose lives had been invaded for stories, it signaled real change was coming, with police investigations and more arrests, and the inquiry chaired by Lord Levison was established to examine media ethics and the relationships between politicians, the police, and the press The former editor of the paper, Rebecca Brooks, was tried and acquitted. H colleague Andy Coulson was convicted of conspiracy to intercept voicemails and sentenced to prison in twenty fourteen, the most high profile scout News UK, which owns the sun, has paid out hundreds of millions of pounds in compensation and legal costs Only last year, Prince Harry settled his civil claim, with its owners issuing its first apology relating to the son did not admit that papers's journalists themselves hacked phones or intercepted voicemails Mirror Group newewspapers had already accepted its journalists' hacked phones in the late nineteen nineties and two thousands. and the Prince's civil case in twenty twenty three saw the judge find that it was widespread and habitual for many years The media landscape has changed dramatically. In the twenty years this scandal has rumbled on. Newsroom practices have changed. But it will be difficult for campaigners to accept this is the end when much of the press didn't join the regulator suggested by Lord Leison, instead opting for self regulation, and the second stage of the inquiry, which was supposed to look at who knew what, when, and whether there had been institutional wrongdoing or cover ups, has never taken place How is TD making banking more human Easy withith less bank talk and more real talk Less, your call is important to us, and more, how can we help? Less confusion and more clarity. It's things like tapping your phone to use your TD card and getting your paycheck two business days early. It's getting more of what you want, and less of what you don't. That's how TDs making banking more human Are we humans Think about it. When it comes to your own food, you can walk into a restaurant, see what's being made, and know exactly what you're getting With dog food, most brands keep that completely hidden. Just food for dogs does the opposite build their entire brand around open kitchens. You can actually walk in and watch them prepare your dog's meals with real human grade ingredients like chicken, beef, carrots, and peas cooked right there in front of you No mystery, no behind the scenes you're not allowed to see This kind of transparency is rare in the pet food world And it's a big reason they've become the number one vet recommended fresh dog food, earning trust from pet parents who want to feel confident in what they're feeding. When a brand is willing to show you exactly how your dog's food is made, it says a lot about the care, quality, and standards behind every meal they produce. Nothing to hide, everything to love just foodfdogs. com and get fifty percent off your first order The Court of Appeal in Paris has upheld the conviction of the French hard right politician Marine Le Pen for misusing public funds but left a path open for her to run for the presidency next year gave her a three year jail term, but suspended it for two years and ordered her to serve the remainder with an electronic tag. The court also shortened her ban on holding public office, which will now run out before voters go to the polls next year. Maarine Le Pen is expected to announce this evening whether she'll run as the national rally candidate to succeed President Macron. Here's our Paris correspondent, Hugh Scofield Will she won't she? Can she? canan't she The uncertainty over Marina Penn's presidential candidacy next spring remains tantalizingly in place despite an appeal court verdict that broadly went her way Yes, the court said she was guilty of a serious offence, supervising a system in which EU parliamentary funds were used to pay national rally staff members But in its sentencing, the court also, in effect removed the bar imposed at the original trial on Marine L Pen's standing for the presidency in twenty twenty seven Marine Lepeen's lawyer Rodolf Bosilu said it was a major change because in lifting her ineligibility, the court was recognising the constitutional right of voters to have a candidate in the election, an election which polls say she would have a good chance of winning There's a complication, because the court also imposed a year's deprivation of liberty on Marin L Penn to be served at home with an electronic bracelet. But she herself has said many times that in such conditions she would not be at full liberty and therefore could not be a candidate But there's also a possibility that that year could be reduced with good behaviour, so then she could be a candidate. The confusion won't be dispelled until Marine Le Pen declares what her intentions are, which should be on national television news this evening. Developments in France are being keenly watched in other European capitals. ourur Europe editor Katia Adler, gives her assessment of what today's court decision could mean In the UK, in recent weeks and months, we've begun re examamining our relationship with the EU. But in Brussels, minds are very much focused elsewhere, namely on next year's French presidential election France is the European Union's second largest economy, a political heavyweight in a turbulent world where Europe feels under threat from Russia and China and increasingly isolated from its former best buddy, the United States. France is a nuclear power with a significant military Whether Marine Le Pen or Jordan Bardella stand, both are seen as having a good chance of winning Both are Eurosceptic and hardly NATO enthusiasts. And remember, the President of France is a very powerful figure that dominates foreign policy. Added to European allies' concerns is that twenty twenty seven is what's described as a super election year, with a strong possibility that parties on the Eurosceptic nationalist right will do well in big EU players Poland Italy and Spain as well None of them is calling to leave the EU, but like Marine Le Pen's national rally partarty, they say their aim is to radically change the bloc from the inside in favour of nation states over Brussels President Trump has reiterated his criticism of NATO allies at a summit of the Alliance's leaders in Turkey. He said he hadn' not been treated well by Member States during the war with Iran. European countries are also coming under pressure from the United States to honour commitments to increase defence spending. Our security correspondent Frank Gardner reports from the summit in Ankara There was always the risk that Donald Trump would be something of a disruptor at this summit And sure enough, his inflammatory words have punctuated the carefully crafted image of unity at this crucial gathering. After the ceremonial welcome from Turkey's President Erdwan playing the stars and stripes, and a Turkish air Force fly past came a throwaay line that the U.S. should really take over Greenland from Denmark. A fellow NATO member Mr. Trump is also clearly still bitter that NATO countries did not join in his war of choice against Iran this year conflict launched without consulting allies that played havoc with the global economy. You would think that they'd be very willing to do something to help us And they really weren't in the case of the United Kingdom, the prrime mininister, I guess he's no longer there. Maybe because of this. It was a very unpopular thing he did. He said, No we'll help after the war is over I said, I don't need that kind of help. We didn't need any help at all. And in a way, I was testing people. I was testing to see whether or not they'd be there because I've long said that we help them, but I'm not sure that they'd be there for us The British delegation here has being keen to promote its defence collaboration with European partners But Skyo Stalmmer has come to Anchor, his final native summit with the defense investment plan derided for being billions a pound short of the requirements set out in last year's much praised strategic defense review For much of the day, NATO delegates have been getting down to the serious business of re arming Europe and seeing how their defense industries can best cooperate President Zelensky, of Ukraine is here He knows all too well what can happen to a country that lacks sufficient air defense Europe needs its own effective anti ballistic systems and missiles. And this work is already underway and I urge all of you and all our partners to give it the attention it deserves. and this cannot wait until twenty Sty or beyond Europe needs affordable mess produced anti ballistic systems as soon as possible He's right As America steadily reduces its defence commitments to Europe The race is on to build up credible air defenses against Russia's growing arsenal powerful missiles and drones Ukraine's intelligence Service, the SBU says the body of a fugitive Ukrainian woman suspected of carrying out a bomb attack in Monaco has been found near Kyiv. Three people, including the wealthy Ukrainian born businessman Vadimyo Molayov, were wounded in last week's attack. Our correspondent Sarah Rainsford sent this report from Kyiv A week ago, Anastasia Brezovska allegedly planted a bomb in Monaco, injuring a former Ukrainian businessman. She then went on the run The target was Vadim Mrmalayv who'd been placed under Ukrainian sanctions, suspected of continuing his business interests in Crimea after the peninsula was seized by Russia. He had denied that Now, Alastas Berzvska's body has been found near Kiev The General Prosecutor's office has told the BBC she was buried in a forest with gunshot wounds to the head. They say she was driven there on july the third by two men who've been detained on suspicion of her murder. Uncomfortably for the government here, onean is a serving officer with Ukrainian military intelligence. He is said to have confessed to the killing. Although in a statement, Ukraine's main intelligence agency, the SBU stresses that he acted on his own initiative and not on orders. Both suspects are said to have transferred money and cryptocurrency to Anasasia Birzovska repeatedly But if they were paying her to attack Mr. O Malliath, there is as yet, no obvious motive Political parties in Northern Ireland say the Democratic Unionist Party has further questions to answer about the behavior of its former leader Jeffrey Donaldson A further allegation about him has been published by the Belfast Tlegraph, Donaldson is currently in custody, waiting to be sentenced for sex offences. Our island correspondent Sarah Gervin reports Last month, Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted of eighteen counts of sex abuse, including one count of rape against two women when they were children Since then a number of separate allegations have emerged about his past behaviour. A BBC spotlight programe has revealed that two senior DUP figures were made aware in twenty twenty one of claims from a woman who said she'd been exploited by Donaldson The Belfast Telegraph newewspaper has reported that a woman had alleged Donaldson had sexually assaulted her at Westminster in twenty sixteen The Police Service of Northern Ireland said it had received a report about an allegation of a non recent offence and was assessing the information. A party spokesperson said the DUP had never received any report or complaint regarding these allegations Northern Ireland's First Minister Michelle O'Neill, said the party must be open and transparent about what it knew Increasingly, we have lots of questions for the DUP to answer because it's very clear for us all to say that there was a culture in the DUP. Theurn a blind day to actually what was happening, that their leader was engaged in this type of behaviour and nobody knew about it. I don't think anybody believes that. In a statement, the DUP accused Shin Fin of playing politics with selective outrage and said Ms O'Neill should await the outcome of an independent review rather than prejudging that process. Donaldson is currently in custody and is due to be sentenced later this year The Bank of England has said the impact of the Iran warar means that one million more homeowners face higher mortgage bills than six months ago According to its forecast, just over five million homeowners should expect their monthly mortgage repayments to increase by the end of twenty twenty eight, compared with four million projected by the bank in December. But it said the increases would be smaller than in recent years Spending online gamblers will have to undergo financial checks under new measures confirmed by the industry regulator. The Gambling Commission says the risk assessments are part of efforts to try to spot customers who may be spending more than they can afford details from our business correspondent, Emma Simpson When new proposals on gambling regulation were published more than three years ago, they recommended adhanced checks on customers experiencing very high losses. This is now going to take the form of a financial risk assessment, beginning with over twenty five s, who deposit five thousand pounds or more over a twenty four hour window with the industry's largest operators. But once the new measures are fully implemented, this will be extended to gamblers who spend more than a thousand pounds in a day, or three thousand pounds in a rolling ninety day period be lower thresholds for under twenty fiveives. The Czechs will use data from credit reference agencies The gambling Commission said there was evidence that some high spending gamblers were experiencing financial difficulties but weren't being identified and therefore couldn't access support. The Bting and Gambling Council, which represents operators said the changes risk pushing customers towards the black market One of the last remaining D day veterans has died at the age of one hundred Jim Glenny, a private in the Gordon Highlanders was eighteen when he arrived on Sd Beach during the Normandy Landings in june nineteen forty four He was shot and captured and went on to survive one of Germany's largest prisoner of war camps. His family has described him as a hero At Wimbledon, on day nine of the championships, several key names, including Yanixinner and Coco Glf have secured their places in the respective semifinals. For the latest from the Allingland Cub, we can cross now to our sports correspondent Lester McGregor Yeah currently watching a match involving Novak Djokovic a man who's no stranger to reac in this stage of the tournament and beyond.
