The Ninth Jedi First Episode Reaction - Last Week In Star Wars — Jul 4, 2026 — starts at 0:00
That's kind of the most fun thing about Saw is when he's all crazy You have no idea where I am. Uh hh H's just buttering you up What do you have to say Pippin? How an think about Suarrea, huh? What's up everyone and welcome to Last Week in Star Wars. I'm Alex. I'm Molly, and this is Pippin. And we're going to talk about the Ninth Jedi. The Suera onene shot comic. And we're gonna to answer a couple of questions. But before we get to any of that, I wanted to shout out that for this weekend, we have a twenty percent off sale on our store. We're actually working on getting a restock of our best and most popular designs back in there, but shirts like this are available on our store at the link in the description, and it's twenty percent off until july fifth. But for now, let's get into last week's news. So on Thursday, the trailer for Star Wars Visions presents the Ninth Jedi came out. We're recording this on Thursday before the trailer came out, so we can't exactly talk about it, but I think we could imagine it pretty well. We thought for sure it was going to drop at noon like the announcement did yesterday, but turns out it might be dropping around the same time as the anime Expo panel, which is later tonight. Which makes sense. But we can still talk about the Ninth Jedi because they showed the first episode at that panel And we were fortunate enough to see the screener of the episode as well. So we can give our general spoiler free reaction to the first episode And we liked it a lot. I really liked it. I was shocked at how much I liked it. I mean I liked first short a lot. The second short I also liked a lot but was devastated by the destruction of Teto You were kind of like, that's unforgivable. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm just gonna pretend like that didn't happen and doesn't exist. I loved the first short from volume one I didn't really care for Child of Hope. I did love Tedo I was also devastated It was done by a different team and you could just kind of tell. like I think they've said is they were working on the series They still wanted a ninth Jedi short in volume three. to kind of peopleeople excited. about the upcoming series But it did feel like a bit of a side quest, it just felt a little different to me. But the first episode of the series that first short like Yes. If I had just gone from that first short into the first episode of the series, I would have been like Yes, this is great. Yeah, Cara was in Child of Hope and it was an interesting little kind of like side story for her specifically After seeing the first episode of the show We're immediately brought back to like who she is, who her father is and what he does, which is build lightsabers And so it connects much better to the first short. Yeah, I mean, what I loved about the first short is how well they played with this concept of The lightsaber color will change depending on who is holding it. like the length can change, the color can change. It'll have a stronger core if the wielder is more connected to the force. like All that was really fun to play with and provided a really cool twist in the first short. So I was like, I want to see more of that And Child of Hope didn't really do it, but The first episode, like yeah, much more focused on the things that I liked about the ninth Jedi first short. It's hard to talk about this. Yeah. I think they did a really good job at just setting up the story for people who have seen the short, but also people who are seeing this for the first time They do a lot of setup in the first episode to like get you prepared for what's to come. and The story itself feeles very familiar in Star Wars. Yeah, I've kind of been saying it feels to me like a mash up between the prequels, the sequels and high fantasy. L I think it leans way more towards high fantasy which I like a lot. I feel similarly except I see elements of every trilogy, like the original trilogy the prequel trilogy Sequel trilogy But especially the sequel trilogy, I feel like there's a lot of elements in this first episode that remind me of that, spepecifically like the villain is kind of like a Kylo Rin esque type Yeah the villain who was set up for the first time in the second short. they named him Noam He is really interesting. just like from what little we get to see of him in the first episode, I was like, what is this guy's deal Also the episode ends with a really solid of like what's going to happen next. Yeah. we were immediately hooked by the first episode and wanted to watch more And I mean, I was going into this really wanting to like it because I think the ninth Jedi short is so good. I walked away from Visions Volume one being like That was all enjoyable But I would love to see more Ninth Jedi. And then when they announced it last year, it's celebration in Japan, I was like So happy. att first I was just happy that it was getting a sequel short in volume three And then they were like, we're doing a full on series. I was like, It makes a lot of sense to me Yeah, everything felt very cohesive just in that first episode. Like I said, there's a lot of familiarities there There's a lot about Jedi and Sith and lightsabers specifically And like there's a bunch of cool ships and there's like a big kind of galactic threat and you've got the small group of Jedi who are like trying to stop big threat. you know, it's a lot of like very semi familiar tropes but done in a way that is going to feel completely new and fresh for Star Wars fans. Yeah, I think it's a great choice to make a series of not just because the first short was so good, but because yeah, it's not two wildly different People who are maybe dipping their toes into Star Wars visions for the first time are going to be like, yeah I can follow what's happening. It's very star Warsy things, but with a different twist and people who are always asking about like, will Star Wars ever do a what if? I'm like, this is kind of a If lightsabers acted this way and the universe were this way. It does feel What ify to me? It really is Star Wars' answer to what if But like It's almost like instead of a what if scenario, it's just This is Star Wars in a different universe. Like it's going to feel like Star Wars, but everything is just like a little bit different. And just not talking about the episode, but visions in general It's a project that I enjoy because it's so much easier for me who sometimes gets overly oronizing with like, well what does all this mean for like the rest of Star Wars canon And it's like you can just Turn all that off and be like, all that matters is the ninth Jedi as this story Yeah, we don't have to connect it to anything. it doesn't connect to anything specifically in what we know to be canon. It's its own thing and we can have our separate hopes and dreams for that that have nothing to do with franchise that we already know about The animation style is still great. It feels kind of old school, but I mean that in a very good way The lightsaber if I mean this story is so centered around lightsabers and so the fights have to be good. and what we've seen so far I really dug. Yes. there is a lightsaber fight in the first episode and it is awesome and it's just like a taste of what we might see more of But if you've watched any kind of anime, but even if you've just watched like the Clone Wars You know that the animated lightsaber fights are insane. They're so much fun to watch and you can just do so much more in animation. I mean, it's anime. like they're going to go a little harder. Yeah. But yeah, all eight episodes are going to drop on august fifth. so we're just about a month away and I'm excited to see the rest. Me too. Moving on to last week in Canon, we did get one new comic issue this week. It was Sw Guerrera Rogue one one shot So he's a tongue twister to say those. This followed Suerira as he went on a mission against the emmpire wound up sacrificing six of his friends to accomplish what he did He also had to shut down a hospital, which caused people in surgery or on life support to die if everything could at least it had to Yeah U That made Bail Organa upset. And you know, saw was being saw about it of like you won't go far enough and blah, blah, blah. Yeah. basasically what you said, this is just saw being saw And it's kind of like, if you don't already know that this guy is like kind of crazy and just off the rails and like willing to go too far, to accomplish his goals That is what this comic shows you like even more so. I did I think this is my favorite of the Rogue O one shots that have come out so far. I thought the art style was really good But Hasu Gerrera is one of those characters that has been explored quite a bit. He's been in animated series, live action series, movies, , comics, video games, like He is someone that I'm like There's only so much we can say about the guy before it gets a little repetitive Yeah I really did enjoy that it felt like it was connected to The Mask of Fear novel that came out by Alexander Fried because that's when we saw Bay Organa working with Sagarrea for the first time Also the end shows saw picking up the Erso family from Coruscant Yeah during All spepecies Wek, which that's from the Catalyst novel by James Lacino. So it had some good iv that I enjoyed there. I think Star Wars likes to go back and really focus on these like cautionary tale stories of like saaw was a good guy and then something really bad happened to him and he kind of like never recovered from it. and simimilar to like Luthan, he's just positioned himself in a way where he's like, I'll just never be happy again and I have to do this. I'm responsible of doing all the super hard stuff and no one can do it but me and I'm sad all the time, but that's just my lot in life and it's kind of like It just shows you like when someone just snaps and goes too far to like Good guys in turn he's just kind of like, ruining lives where he thinks he's doing a good thing Uh hh Hven's just buttering you up. What do you have to say Pippin? Half an hour about Sagarrera, huh? Half an hour away from dinnerim he's like, hello. I was surprised to see that like the Air shows were at the end because I think the Cassian and the Gen comic were both right before Rogue one So I was kind of, even though his hair was shaved short I was like, o, how early before Rogue one is this? Then I was like, o, it's seventeen years before Yeah Rogue one. Okay. Yeah, she's still just a k. Yeah Yeah, it was cool to see saw and Bveil kind of like at each other's wits and arguing about stuff. I always like seeing him arguing with other. That's kind of the most fun thing about Saw is when he's all crazy You have no idea where I am. It all kind of adds to like whenever you watch Rogue O again. and you see like Mon Mothma's reaction to hearing about Suerrea and her and like you understand it more and more of like why she would be hesitant to work with him and like worried about what he's doing now because he's just kind of like causing a lot of chaos and calling it help. Yeah I like that.'m helpping. Stop helping We don't need any more help all. How many people need to die for your help? Moving on to last week in questions, Ello Asty asks how he would feel if Captain Phasma was revealed to be alive after the last Jedi. indicated I figured you would like this question I don't know why I have vicated. I don't know I would be excited for sure. I loved the book Phasma by Delilah Dawson. I thought it was super unique for a Star Wars book and I think there's there could potentially be more story to tell for her. My initial reaction would be like here we go again. Star Wars resurrecting characters that were thought to be dead But because of Delilah Dawson and knowing that I think she has said she has an idea for how Pasma would come back and how her story would go. I'm like, okay I trust Eilah Phasma was a great novel, very unique, like you said. So getting a sequel to that and following up on her I would be goingo into it with an open mind at least. I get the feeling, I could be wrong about this, but I get the feeling that R checks took over potential storyline that she may have had for Pasma But I would like to see PAasma get redeemed and start fighting for the good guys. Really I don't want that at all. I don't think that that. She was a great villain, but like, and I would be fine if she stayed a villain to, but I don't know. Star Wars loves redemption. Of course. So. I mean she would have a long, long journey to redemption. like her whole thing in Phasma is being So selfish to the like she has to survive and will do anything for her survival So I think that would be a difficult road for her. and I'd be fine if she just stayed a villain. but yeah I'd like to see maybe what She would be like outside of the first order. outside of the armor I'm curious to know what ilah's idea is. Well I keep thinking about if we get to see a continuation of Finn's story and the other ex stormtroopers with who were with Janna at the time, like imagine if asthma were to do all the work and be redeemed and then to work with them specifically and like take orders from Finn S I'm that is interesting if they could get there, but my I went to the opposite side and I think it would be fun if the stormtroopers, the former stormtroopers found out PAasma was alive. They triered. It's a story of it's following PAasma But it's a cat and mouse game where she's trying to stay away And think I don't think they would hunt her down and kill her, but like bring her to justice and getting to follow her while she's trying to get away and ultimately has to go and answer for her crimes. and then yeah maybe She is locked up in It turns over a new leaf years later, or something like that. I'm down, I'm down for anything Delilah Dawson might have in the future. If nothing else, getting Gwenlyn Christie back in Star Wars would be awesome Yeah. I mean, that The last Jedi and the way she went out where we get to see just her eye I was like, oh, that did feel like a bit of a waste of Gwendlyn Christie. She's so great in Game of Thrones. and after reading the PAasma novel I remember being like, o my go, she's gonna go so hard and last Jedi. and she's barely in it and she falls to her supposed death. Yeah. She would get along with Mando, maybe. They both have shiny armor. Grogu would get confused. Wh one is or maybe she'd become Grogu's mom? Oh his mom But that's it for last week in Star Wars.
