Why Horror Movies Are Crushing At The Box Office - Last Week In Star WarsJun 13, 2026 — starts at 0:00

I want to go through The planlanet Core. What's up everyone and welcome to Last weeek in Star Wars. I'm Alex. I'm Molly. And this week we're gonna talk about why horror is doing so well at the box office. What Star Wars character would survive the backrooms? The two gaming trailers that we missed while we were on vacation. Catching up on two weeks' worth of comics. But before we get to all that, we are doing a giveaway this week. We've been sent a lot of Mando and Grogu PR over the past month or so, so we're gonna put together a box and give some of it away. I have a lot of grogus, but at this point I need to give some of them away. I need to. This is big for you. This is huge. This is big. So there's a gleam link down in the description to enter And that's going to run up until Tuesday night and we will announce the winner on next week's video. Starting off with last weekend news, we took last week off, so we're kind of playing some catch upp, but something I wanted to talk about for the past week why horror is doing so well at the box office with movies like Obsession and Backrooms. Yeah, it's wild to see these indie horror films blowing a Star Wars movie out of the water. Yeah, and that's what I've seen people talking about how it did so well against the Mandalorian and Grogu and how it's doing better than a lot of Marvel movies and just What's the deal here? And I mean, the deal is obsession specifically is phhenomenal. We loved that. saaw that one first, saw backrooms recently I didn't like that one as much, but I really appreciated just how different it was. And I think that is really is difference and surprises and just going in not knowing what to expect. and this is by the way, not meant to against each other. I'm not saying that if you loved The Mandalorian and Grogu more than obsession or what like great And I'm not really trying to say like the Mandalorid and Grogu should have done better at the box office I don't really care about the box office, but it is a good indicator of what audiences are interested in. Yeah, we knew next to nothing about these movies Like I don't remember really seeing any trailers or previews or like clips online about them it was all word of mouth hearing it from our friends, seeing it on our like algorithms, like you know, as soon as you read one article You get a thousand more in your feet or whatever. It's wild how that spread through everyone, just people being like, o my God, had you seen this movie? It's crazy. Obsession, especially is one that one of our friends told us about and we were like, he was like Don't look up anything about it. justust go watch it. And I was like, great I was in the mood for a good horror movie. And that, I think is something that's been new for me the past few years, I wouldn't say that I grew up being into horror movies, even when we like first started dating, I wasn't obsessed with them or anything. You were much more into horror, but like, You got me into them And it's gotten to a point where like every year I really want to find like one great new horror movie, I think obsession is it. The thing with horror is like it can be really wild and c'ampy you know, it doesn't have to make perfect sense. can take a lot of story risks And it has the advantage of suspense and jumps scare moments really driving the audience to stay engaged and paying attention. And I think going into a movie and not knowing what to expect at all is a big thing. where we've had so many Marvel movies the past few years Not as many Star Wars movies, but People know what they're getting when they go to it. I mean One of the main things we saw people saying about Mando and Grogu is, yep, that's what I expected. And you know, I expected a really fun time and I got it And to be clear like I liked Mando and Grogu more than the backrooms. But I liked obsession the most because It was just so engaging. I had no idea what to expect it had something real to say. Yeah But like there is a world where if we didn't do the channel, we could have stayed away from most of the trailers and clips if we wanted to of Mando and Grogu and probably gone into the movie being a little more surprised about a lot that happened. but we had seen everything, talked about it, broken it down, you know, we have a unique perspective because of that. but I still think there's something to these like indie horror films that is like sparking something in people that I love to see. And this isn't me saying Star Wars needs to make a horror movie. That isn't really what Star Wars is or what it's about. We could make a Star Wars horror movie, but that would take a lot of time and effort to really figure out what it wants to say Is it going to be PG thirteen? Like can we can we still there's plenty of G thirteen horror movies that are fantastic. We looked up a bunch the other day. I'd be interested to see a Star Wars horror movie, but I don't necessarily think that is the answer to any of this? Oh yeah. and I don't really either. I'd be open to it, but I think it's just that when you're going to see a brand new horror movie, which first of all, horror just seems to be they have their franchises for sure but also That seems to be where a lot of the original ideas are coming from And sometimes it's a swing and a miss, but sometimes it's just something you've never seen before. And I think franchises especially owned by mega corporations like Disney Disney wants to find that perfect formula where you can just like put a movie on an assembly line and people are going to go see it over and over and over. But that's not like people are going to get tired of that So when I think of that's not what Disney used to be. It is kind of what it is now. But when I think of Andor. that was different from the usual Star Wars formula. And I think it like surprised some people. And that I just think some people are looking to be surprised when they go to the movies instead of like checking off a list. Yeah. I'm going to get on my talks about Disney again just because I feel like that really is the culprit behind all of this because we keep talking about these horror movies and how they're unique and different and they're taking risks And they're super low budget and the production companies that are making these movies are willing to take the risk. Disney is not willing to take any risks. Lucasvilm might, but I don't think Disney is going to allow a lot of risks being taken in their Star Wars movies. Yeah. And I think that's a huge problem. Well, my hope is that, you know, when Marvel became such a big thing when Marvel, the MCU first started and that kind of like got all of Hollywood excited for these shared cinematic universes and The Dark universe never took off and every studio wanted that and every studio wanted their movies to be making a billion dollars when They really could be making lower budget movies that are less risky. Yeah. And now that's a lot more difficult with Star Wars, I will admit. It is. but there's like I got to be like a ton of CGI and like practical effects that cost a lot of money. there's just a lot more involved, but Obsessions was made for less than a million dollars, and it's made over two hundred million at the box office at this point. Backrooms was over a million, but still is making insane money at the box office and they've both been held in the theater rotation longer than they were originally going to be. And I think just a lot of the big studios got so fixated on only making big budget stuff as if like that's what audiences cared about is like As long as it's got a big budget It's going to make it bad. But like audiences want a great story and great characters and I think something newew I don't mind Star Wars having a formula every once in a while. Like I said, I liked the Mandalorian and Grogu very much what I expected as long as like Star Fighter isn't also exactly well like I hope that is riskier and surprises me I want to continue to be surprised by Star Wars If occasionally they just have fun dumping the toy box out, I'm like, I'm allright with that. It's really depressing to see much money goes into some of these huge budget films and then just see them flop. Yeah weekend after weekend after weekend at the box office. L no people are inundated in like too much of that stuff and it's too much to keep up with It's too expensive to go to the theater multiple times a month. There's so many factors keeping people away from the theater nowadays, but they hear all their friends talking about word of mouth, Hey, obsessions was really wild and crazy. You gott to go see it. Don't look up anything about it I mean, that has to pie your curiosity. Yeah. I mean, that made us go like, well, then let's not wait for streaming. Let's go right now. Yeah. We're rewatching Battle Star Galactica right now. so the phrase all of this has happened before and all of it will happen again is in my head. But it This happens in Hollywood. like the big studios just find the thing that works and then they do it until All of a sudden it doesn't work anymore and people are like we want to be engaged with our art. We want to be surprised by it. And I think that's partially what's happening right now. And sometimes it takes a really long time for movies to get made. so sometimes these trends will take too long and by the time the movie is out, the trend is like, well gone by then But I remember when the Barbie movie was doing so amazing, we kept hearing rumors about all these other like toy related movies that were being put into production. I mean, Masters of the Universe is one of them. Yeah.ike I think that is a Hasbro movie. Yeah So I don't know. coming next year, maybe we'll see a movie about sllinkies. Right. And that's again, like Hollywood takes the wrong lessons often where they're like People love toy movies quick. And I mean I've heard Masters of the Universe is fun, at least. I don't know anything more about it. but I heard similar things to Mando and Grogu. Critics didn't like it I think a lot of just general audience responses were good. But also Barbie had like a lot to say and it wasn't just like Barbie going around doing Barbie things. It was a smart movie that was well written. It really was. And like Hollywood doesn't think about that part, they're like, quick, makeake a No movie. Yeah. Don't wake daddy. hereere it comes Actually like, isn't there a movie about a magic Eball? If there's a moie I mean, Ouiji has a couple Yeah movies like But like A twenty four could make a sick magic eightball movie and it would probably do crazy numbers. I bet it would. But moving on, we also have to catch up on some gaming news that happened because we went on vacation. so of course Two trailers came out while we were gone. Of course. It always happens. But we got new trailers for Galactic Racer and Zero Company, and we got a release date for Zero Company, august twenty seventh, which. I don't know. I was surprised by how soon that was. So yeah, that one's coming out first and then a couple months later racing game Only because we had known about the Galactic racer date. I was like, o, okay, so Zero compompany is probably coming out later. But anyway we got a story trailer for Galactic Racer, which really I would call it more like the pod racing trailer. They kind of held back on pod racing and teased it, but this one just had a lot of pod racing stuff in it Yeah, when they say story trailer, like This is a racing game and play a lot of video games, but I did play a lot of crwise in the USA growing up. so that's the only real racing game that I have to compare this to But in that, there is kind of a story mode where you go race by race and like as you win the races you like unlock new vehicles and new stuff. so it's similar here. We're just going through each race at each location and you're probably just going to be unlocking new stuff to add to your cars or whatever. Yeah, new racers, new pods, new characters and I do think it sounds like you're trying to kind of build up your fame and your notoriety until you were good enough to race Solba. It said something like only Legends are able to face Sula. Yeah. So I think he might be the top boss Or it could be Ben Cuadanios because he was the last thing you unlocked in episode one racer. So there's really not a whole lot to the story, but there is this character named Kester Bouool, who is like the current star of the outer Rim Galactic League and He seems to be like rich and snobby Just kind of an all around jerk probably. And then Shade is like the up and coming character. He has like a personal beef with This guy's family, the Ble family. Is this the player character shadeadeade? I think they've got a helmet on and then they like get on Sulba's good side or something like that and work together to like try to take this other guy. Oh, okay, so Ble is more the villain Yes. Okay. seeee, I haven't read this article. I just watched the trailer. I'll be interested to see the trailer showed his classic orange pod from episode one, but he also has a newer one from that beyond victory VR thing where it was like made out of tie interceptor parts. So I'm like, I wouldn't mind seeing that too. Yeah, that'sool Something else I noticed was Griff Hallerin from Star Wars Resistance is one of the racers. I'm like that is a nice touch. Hop for hype P phaizon. Yeah. Let's get Donald Phaizon back. Hopefully Stehven Stanton voices him. Yeah. So it looks fun. Another big focus of the trailer was just all the crashes those looked phenomenal. Like this it looks like a lot of fun. I'm excited to see some of the different locations because we know what like the Beggars Canyon Bnta race location looks like. We've had a couple more race areas pop up in Star Wars, but not a ton. I'm hoping that they do an underwater bongo I don't think that's going to be on there, but that's kind of like my They haven't mentioned anything about like submarine racing yet. so it's all been pretty much land based, but you never know fingers crossed I want to go through Planet Core Having Mall Shadow Lord, May fourourth, and the Mandalorian and Grogu all going on at the same time has made our lives busy. We also got a gameplay trailer for Zero Company And that's we got the august twenty seventh release date It was cool to see just how this game is going to play and feel which I still I bought Xcom and I still haven't just sat down and played it. So I still feel like I'm on the outside of this kind of gameplay. I was grasping what they were showing. Yeah This sort of game is really outside of my wheelhouse. It's nothing like I've played before There's a lot going on, a lot of mechanics, a lot to remember. So I was reading all these articles and like really trying to understand as much as I could about the game It does sound really interesting. And I am going to give it a shot and We'll see how it goes, but there's a ton of customization. Well I need to just recognize that I love single player, like one person controlling Calcestist or something. I also love real time strategy games, which is controlling huge armies. So this is just in between where you're controlling like five people at a time. Yeah, so you have some specific missions that are story driven So those missions will be required to like finish the game.. They'll kind of start out with you in third person and you'll be able to walk around and it chat with NPCs and kind of interact with the environment a little bit. Otherwise it will shift into like an isometric battlefield view, which is common for these kinds of games. Yeah, that's what we saw most of the trailer was doing. To go over some just general story bullet points, it takes place in twenty BBI.ar the end of the Clone Wars Yay They gave us an exact date. Yeah, that's always fun. Imagine if Mando did that. There's a group of players that are like specific non negotiable operators that you can choose from to play and then you can also have fully customizable ones. But the main character is Hawks and they will be fully customizable by gender species and overall appearance. so you can make Hwockks anyone. I'm really glad that Lucas Film is open to doing that. I think early on in like the twenty fifteen times I think they were a little wary of too much customization in video games The villain sounds interesting, newew group that like a cult or something. Yeah, they're called the Infinite Cil and it's a dark side cult working with the Separatists. The leader of the cult is this woman named Fathom. and basically they want to spread this thing called the shadow plague and you can kind of see what that looks like in the trailer. The wispy stuff. Yeah, it's like wispy magic or whatever, it's a plague can make people stronger and fight harder. and Yeah, it gives them abilities and physical resilience That's all it really just makes the enemies you have to fight tougher. Yeah. I'll be interested to see actually what it is exactly. Is it magic? Is it some kind of scientific disease that can spread? Wh knows, but it makes the villains like look a specific way and yeah, they get stronger and harder to kill. I'm glad to see that because this feels very like grounded and gritty and real, but you know, I like Star Wars being weird also. So there is going to be this fantastical strange pulpy thing happening. So the authored operators which are like the kind of set Con players. You've got Trick or CT three three one, who's a clone trooper. He and Hawks have been together the longest and they've had the most history together. Tell Reya Vokas, I hope I'm saying that right. That's the Jedi character who is a Tognath and she is a padawan who recently lost her master. Ki Kalervo is one of the last surviving members of the ancient Mandalorian clan Verminoth And she's joined the team in her quest for revenge. She says in the trailer like I'm not in this for the credits She wants some kind of revenge. Bermminutoth is interesting. Her clan name, I tweeted this the other day because I was like Does this mean her clan took down Assuma Vermanov? at one point. I mean, that would be my guess if the if Den and Grogu's clan is named after the mudhorn because they ought a mud horn together. I love that. That's such a cool connection. Or they just thought it was cool. Or they name But I like to think that they took down a Vermmanoth back in the day. Or maybe there is such a thing as a regular Vermmanoth and what we saw in solo is a suma Vermanoth, which is like huge and unkillable They took a mini ermanoth. Yeah. Luko Bron is a sharp tongued sniper who defended his homeworld of Umbara during the Republic's invasion He's not loyal to the Republic, but he is willing to fight alongside you. I have been intrigued by that character since we saw him in the first trailer back in Japan. Yeah celebration. And there is a mechanic in this game where you can kind of like improve the relationships of these characters so you could have the Imbaran and the Clone Trooper like be better friends or you can really make them hate each other even more. Jay Morden is a noble from House Morden of Shoot turon. Toran. She Toran? That's from the Vader comics in twenty fifteen. I was excited to read about her. This is a crazy like for me, I feel like this is a crazy deep cut. This Sutoran plan on this mining planet has only ever been in the Darth Vader comic. Yeah. I mean, anything from comics, I would say, is a fairly deep cut, but that planet was significant in that twenty fifteen run. And we kind of see the fall of the noble houses in comic, but since this is the Clone Wars era, we're going to get to see them being a little more at the height of their power. Yeah. So she has been instrumental in getting Zero Company hired by the Republic and it says she will not rest until she's taken back her mining citadel from the Separatists. Okay And then we've got cabney cab 's a real therm scissor punch name. A great Star Wars video game name former prize fighter and seasoned crooook known for his cybernetic arm, fighting ability, and distinctive rhyming dialect Cab is a Felsi, and an original species created specifically for Zero Company. He looks a lot like Barriio from Mall Shadow Lord simimilar species, but b here Okay I'm interested in this rhyming dialect though. That makes me think he just sings all the time. He's just rapping. Yeah. So that's your like core members that you will see in like the story. That's probably who I'm going to wind up just playing with. I don't know. I don't like play these games for a whole lot of the customizability personally, but I know that's huge. You're not going to make like a D squad I do think I will eventually All droid. Lets I want to play through the story with like the characters that are given to me first And then if I really dig the gameplay I might go back and try yeah, a D squad run Yeah, because like I think this game has great replayability because once you play through it, you'll be able to say Oh, I wish I had a character who did more of this, or I wish I had a character with the ability to do this So then you can go through and play it again Fully kitting out and customizing all your players. We're moving into last week in Canon. We're still playing some catch upps, so we're going to talk about the last two weeks in Canon because last week, last last week we had The Rogue one Jin Erso one shot comic which kindind of like the Cassian one. I was just like Okay, yeah, this is fine. My main takeaway from this because it is basically just like retelling Jin. it does add some stuff about why she's on Wilbani and like what she's up to on Wilbani, which is like the prison planet. There's a couple of flashbacks of her with Saw and the Partisans and it does talk about how She kind of taught herself how to be more of like a slicer, kind of like a hacker type person so that she would be useful. for the partisans. So a lot of this comic, which this is what I really liked about it was taken from Beth Revis's Rebel Rising novel And we got some stuff like that, which is building off of the novel, but also visualizations. for characters from that book that we had never seen before. So I really did appreciate that I liked this one way more than the Cassian one shot that we got It was just like this very short kind of like little story that takes place on Wobani right before Rogue O It also made me think about like the future of AI and robots and if they take over because There's a section where the KXroids are kind of like the security force on this prison planet And like someone, one of the workers, one of the prisoners who's working like gets wounded. And the KX droids are like This worker is of no use to us anymore. Kill them. So I was like, that could happen. Yeah, it's Terminator, Matrix. That could happen to anybody. Old hat. Those little delivery droids Yeah, little gun pops out. You don't know what they're packing. I have no idea. This previous week we got the fourth issue of Shadow of Maul. And this is The prelude comic to the upcoming series, as it still says on the cover This was a fun issue. I really liked this one. Yeah, I feel like this one was a good example of like, it doesn't matter that we're reading this after the fact. It doesn't have much to do until maybe the end. It doesn't have a whole lot to do with the story that we saw in Maul Shadow Lord. It was more about yeah, Demas and Vario and I really liked just learning more about their interactions beforehand because we know that they're in some sort of hence war or standoff at the start of the series But this shows us why. and that they're like betting on this pod race and there's a double cross and a triple cross and then a quadruple cross, which still kind of felt like the Dark Knight. The Joker Double crot like having all of his heist people kill one another and then he kills the last one that They reminded me of that again. I especially liked that this pod race that happens every year on Janx like Technically it's illegal But it brings in so much money to the city and like jobs and stuff that they just let it happen. And I love that The cops are kind of in on it. they're there keeping an eye on things, but The casino does huge numbers and like I don't know, all the businesses in that area are probably doing great Yeah, money rules the galaxy as usual The only thing that kind of gave me pause which isn't a big deal is the fact that we get to see arena, which I love that. But she gets robbed of tens of millions of credits, or her casino does It might not necessarily be her money, but still she just didn't seem phazed by that like in the show. You'd think that she'd be a little on edge or something. I feel like They said something in the comic about like the amount of money that you know has at that time is like huge compared to normally. so I don't think that's all her money. Yeah, I think it's people placing bets. So all of her clients probably lost money But that would at least ding her reputation. I guess the casino did look fairly empty when we should it? in Shadow Lord. So maybe maybe she's just playing it real cool. She's trying to build up her reputation again. Yeah. But we also got to see her and Brander in their younger days, that was. We got to see a flashback of the two of them like bounty hunting Yeah Yeah. so That was ne. I can't remember the artist of this series, but it's the same person that did the Jedi Kight series, and I really dig their style. I think they do good solid Star Wars art. I agree. Moving on to last week in questions, we took a few from our Patreon and Spider Man of Earth one hundred twenty one eight asks which Star Wars character we think would handle being lost in the back rooms the best, whichich is appropriate, considering what we talked about earlier. Yeah, I don't know how much of our audience is such like big horror fans as we are and who's seen backrooms or not. So this might not make sense if you haven't seen it, but it's kind of like people getting lost in literally just a weird looking room that goes on forever and it's kind of made out of your own memories and it's a very trippy strange place to be. Yeah. the first character that I thought of was Yoda because he kind of goes on this trippy adventure in the Clone Wars and he meets like the Force priestesses and he meets his like evil versions of hisself The second you said that I was like, yeah, that's the answer because especially meeting the evil self, the shadow self kind of thing because There's a character in backrooms who like his shadow self is wandering around these holes. So seems like exactly the kind of thing Yoda would excel at. And I feel like Yoda might handle it the best? I mean no one I don't think anyone can handle a situation like that well because it's so bizarre, but Yoda's been around for a lot of stuff. He's tried a lot of things. and trippy vision quest. feels like something that he'd be like Yeah, I actually do think he'd handle it pretty well. and there are the occasional like there's a tiny door that someone has to recle. all the little small spaces, Yoda's just walking straight through. That's true. I didn't think about that. Yoda's gonna do great in the back room. If there's anything spooky in there, he's small enough to get into the small tight spaces to hide. He's gonna get away. He's also going gonna mentally be ready to handle whatever he sees, Yod is good If we're considering that the force might be cheating, I'll throw out Boba Fett because we've also seen him go on. like a spirit quest journey when he got high off that nose lizard. good lizard but just jumps in his nose. Yeah. So I think that he has kind of faced some of his demons and some of his past and he made it out the other side just fine. So And you know, if worst comes to worst, he can just fight his way out. Yeah These also had experience being stuck in a Sarlac pit He can find his way out difficult situations. True. mr. JD Rice asks, what does it mean to be weak minded in Star Wars? I kind of think the answers are the same in Star Wars and in the real world. Yeah, I guess so. I mean, I would think that if you're gullible, my thought went to just easily influenced I think Obi Wan says the Force can have a strong influence on the weak minded. And that to me just means anyone who doesn't really think for themselves that sees something on Facebook or Twitter and is just like, well, that must be true. They see AI babies and they're like, how'd they get those babies to do that Yeah, just the way news is nowadays, you can't really believe anything you read. You have to Double check. things you have to fact check because everything is so sensationalized that what you're reading could be entirely false. Right. I mean, just in the world of debate even before AI, you know, it was just people reading headlines and just deciding, well, that must be the full truth of it and not actually reading articles which I mean, we can also just be upset at the news outlets that do that that are willing to prey on people that way Right. And it's gotten so competitive that you know, these outlets say, oh, we have to do that to to get people's attention That drives me crazy because it's like, no, you don't. The only reason you feel like you have to is because other people do it And if everyone just agreed to not lie to each other, which I know is a tall order. but That's the reason people are like, well, it just has to be done on the internet. Right. People consume information at such a rapid pace nowadays. I can't tell you how many times someone has been like, Hey, did you see XYZ? And I'll be like That sounds not true? Did you read the article? and they're like, no. And it's like, well, okay, let's look it up. Let's read the article and whatever they thought it said, it didn't say that. Right. That's kind of like the problem of social media now. Yeah, I think that all of us are more susceptible to being mind tricked. like we're all a little more weak minded because we're just being blasted in the face with headlines and clickbait and misinformation constantly. Going back to the force, I don't know. yeah, like I would like to think that I wouldn't be easily mine tricked, but who's to say? That's like everyone has been tricked by clickbait at some point. can't say that I've never fallen for or seen a video that I thought was neat and found out later it was AI and I wanted to break my phone like It happens. but I think just the willingness to not by everything that you are told and the willingness to look into in research the things that people are telling you and not just hear something on the news and be like, well, that's true. I'm trying to think of specific moments in Star Wars where people get mind trcked and I had a funny thought of like, It could also be a situation where Maybe you're a stormtrooper and you hate your job and you're really phoning it in And you're just like barely there paying attention. to what's going on And in that way you might be easily mind tricked because you're just miserable and you don't like your job. For sure. I think that is part of it But the stormtroopers are very often portrayed as weak minded. because I think they are easily influenced. They signed up to to wear the helmet Yeah and fight for the evil Dark wizards, so they're easily influenced for sure. But that's it for last week in Star Wars.
