Has anyone else heard this slang word for then O is it a North Easn? It's a slang word for a penis, isn't it? Is it Yeah Have you heard it? Yeah I' re it. Yeah. o I thought I was wick Have you've never heard that. Aantom wick prick, inn't it Oh what's happen to Wick Wherever Aampton Wick is but what is Hampton Wick though?' some pl place isn' it? Yeah It's a place, isn't? Aampton Wick' a place. Yeah. Yeah. Be I always hear like he's got a rightite Hampton N, David, I thought He were talking about me again. that's what is a right hter. No, I've definitely heard it. What about the challenge J How was your body it? Well done jail You know what? I didn't get emotional the whole way and then I seen your little clip of it and I nearly cried. Thanks for your kind words. W must have been tough. It must have been easy enough though, wasn it? You know what was No, you know what was so good It bit. I tore my hamstring on the second day. Wow So that like running obviously On the bike. You know when you stand up on the bike it was right in the of money that like that's h tore it. You carry on. Yeah I had b in it. if you sleep, if you do it wrong and yeah, yeah there is a bikeking you can get in there But by the time I did it, so the first day after the first two days, I'd done two hundred and twenty miles on the bike So I think it was like a new thing and then how to run the thirty eight miles a day after. But what happened was I was running, if you ever ride your hamstrings, so you run like on the front of your foot so my toe Oh gotutol inect's horrible. horrible. And I've got like because I was sat on the bike seat for so long and no comments but I'm still numb in places like three weeks later id you have one of those soft seats, J, those was jilled seats. Did't you get Yeah still when you' st when you're long so many miles What was the hardest bit Jill was to get through. Well, the thirty eight miles I got I had twelve miles left and I stopped at like this pit stop. so you're finished Yeah, Is that like you finished like a marathon Jess Enis walks out and she's like, I'm running with you now. And I was like, all my I was so happy she was there. but that is one person you don't want to be greeted by when you're absolutely knackered to do How long did you have to run for another what? twelve miles and then I think it was the bike again a hundred, which was through the Yorkshire Dales, which was quite an incline and then finish with a marathon. But you know what? You know see like you see a lot of bad stuff in the news and I know there is bad things going on in the world, but everyone was so lovely that I' going through these villages and old women are giving us like satumers, all the schools ad made posters. like I was actually enjoying it in a wird way It's called like type two fun when you're in pain, but you're enjoy. Yes He doesn't know about it I mean, Roy doesn't we don't know about a ty too fun This episode of Stick to Football is brought to you by Skybet. Before we kick off the show, I want to say huge thank you to our partners, Sky Bet, who' helped bring you stick to foootball throughout this tournament. Make sure you've liked and subscribed, you do not want to miss what's coming next Of course you look at him he's not going to be the ment as well as physicallyoy but it is something because I think that this guy needs a rest break. I think Declland's not a million miles away from the same thing. Absolutely no chance to send it beat now Grgina to be in the semis. I just can't see it. That is a worry going into a knockout. You could got have it worked out by a user. It's a big worry. Who's the next culture of Scotland? He's just thrown it right in a deepnder because need Dunan you can do it They can for if the. Wh is an actually? If we go to Brazil, I think we can beat Brazil and then I think we'll probably have problems after that. I always hear like he's got a V Humpton. No I do, but I thought. He would talk about me again. No that would be he is a V Hampton We've got a Pack show, we' got England, and then we've got Duncan Fergson coming in. Dun's coming good. I'ad to talk about Scotland. I like Duncan. I've just seen him in a reception. So England, where are we? We've come out of a group, we're top of the group and I feel like at the moment everyone's in that position Are we good? Are we bad? Are we in a good place? Are we always in placeen We're always a little bit like that, aren't we And which just feels like we don't want to commit to I'm not sure this is right and I'm not sure that is right. So let's do glass half full and glass half empty. The glass half full what are the positives out of the group? Probably Jude and Harry' Yeah. Yeah little dudes. Harry scoring and the top the group And the top the group. But like I can't remember too many tournaments where England play where you're not feeling like or on the edge's ye I feel like that's that's normal but it is What I would say right, there's a lot of people that are not to be like H wingers at the moment And the way that we depend on the wing is doing well they're not playing well enough and that needs to happen quickly. You' have thought at least one of them would be like rightight he's playing for definite But like there's none of them at the moment. St in the positivive now though, in terms of Jude, think about Jude particularly And I know Harry scores, but Harry does score. We take it for granted these scores. But you think about Dude like before the tournement Yeah. I mean I go back six, seven, eight months when we were doing that show and there was sort of a massive There wass a massive issue with Jude Broom with Thomas Tull with the media. It was a massive story. I mean, it seems ridiculous, doesn't it the sort of suggestion? Yeah but he's embarrassed them now is embarrassed is embarrassed especially all those journists that were coming is embarrassed because we were talking about the fact that what he brings to that team and his confidence and how would lift the team up and he will be that guy when you need him to step up and he's done that. L is B? I just think some lad's are just confirming what what we knew we knew' it's the discourse that they were trying to how many around How many times has that happened with England players over the last twenty thirty years They will may go after somebody for different reasons. Jude was a bit's too cocky, he's a bit full of himself. There was it an element to that kind of criticism, but O on really top players really just J just torn up? Yeah.ight I struck me in the first half watching the game with you yesterday was that you kept saying in the first half when England weren't playing very well to be fair, you kept saying that Jw Bellingam the map tackles he was putting in and you were impressed with him in. I was. Yeah, because I think sometimes you can lead in different ways So we automatically talkk course and he done the business in the second half with his quality play in possession as we know the important part of football is what you do older possession And I think he just kept that momentum and I think that will lift players I even a manager, I guarantee a manager halfime would be looking him going, but you me know your talent to play But you would have been loving seeen that side to it. And we've seen a few clips in the other games that as well, but particularly yesterday, there was two or three times where he hunted somebody down and got the ball at you ow You look like you are your qualities dear. that will come up in the second half. But to show out bit yeah, you look like he's joyined being more in think so You't Ry, take the responsibility, I think. kindind of gring with it. whereere you go dt a few months ago about your obvy mood or whatever it be in the camp and all of a sudden you turn up and you go, yeah,s Well Thomas Tukeal created a bit of that himself, didn't it I wonder by the words he used about to be fair. I mean was it wasn't just a sort of note smoke without fire. There was some that But I think the managers also man managers can fire you up in different ways And I think that fired what I obviously would do And we left him out while he left the by and what happens to managers to players Even the great players were talking about where people were talking about Ronaldo last week. All of a sudden people criticizing these lies just just respond. But he looks a real deal, Jude Yeah fld. I think at the national level, you need somebody. The one thing that I was worrying about was if Anderson was playing that wall on his own with obviously Morgan Rogers and Bellingham a bit higher, but I think he was doing kind of both jobs. And what I liked about Jude was is one's kind of in behind as well just stretching them Yeah we mentioned that. And I think that role rebelling yesterday Anderson because sometimes when Anderson or Rice are in there getting haven't the pass between them. was Anders yesday he was getting his head up and obviously be Bellingam staking I'm getting a f. Oh yeah. so we sa off for the first gun You can't beat the midfielder if he sees a bit of space where they can link up but there's no one to link up with go put in into space. Yeah. And I think Anderson was enjoying that a little bit more not going because him and Rice sometimes take four, five too many touches and it slows the game down. or sometimes if you have one on it icularly it's a poor team like Panamagon, No, I just I see that space When I think of Jew Bellingam before this tournament and I think of him I think of him predominantly as A number ten arriving in the box If I look at him yesterday, if you think about a young Roy Keny who used to obviously compete in midfield do the defensive wh but they wouldd also run forward constantly make runs in behind and then they'd have that little bit of quality in the final third. and you think of that sort of he actually has they look like a complete midfield player. Yeah. he looks a very's He looked like he went up a different level yesterday, almost like a bit like I didn't expect that but expected the second half bit the cross, maybe the finish, which was unbelievable by I'm saying Yeah, we know he's that quality, but he's just yeah again gu, he's mature and he's getting a bit older He's takaking responsibility and that role we mentionured before the game yesterday is deeper. It might be slightly easier for him because you see the space Hes not afraid to running. He's not one of these lazy pairs go all has to be my feet. he's going. Oh look at the first go prime example plenty of space and a lot of players see the space, they hear it or they don't see it or they see it and they don't want to do it? he's gone Yeah just put it in there. And he' done a few times in the first time. he's the one he won the corner for the goal. Of course for the corner, but I think that he's like I said,' sorry for the second one I'm talking about when you made the run your cour. Yeah againain for the He was the only one that would make that run. He's made he's made things happen He made things happen for us to get the corner and then scores the corner and he creates the goal for Harry I' thought that The way led L Royce in the whole game He was leading by example And I think that he wants to play in that road where when he's playing at the ten He's waiting for the ball to come to him. That's That's I don't think that's what he wants. I think he wants to be that guy tackling back last stitch tackles winning the ball because you you think good after that right I think he's one of those. I think makes you think better. So he keeps he just keeps progressing in the game. I think that they've got to see that now. He's been England's best player by an absolute street in the group in the group games. I mean, not I think To be fair, the questionions that you mentioned about obviously people said about him off the pitch or on the pitch, all that nonsense. I'd never heard anything bad about him actually specifically, but you know, you just say the rums He's actually turned up every after every single game done the interviews. And I don't know I Bino. remember be on the bnce. I there was that element of Oh, we won't do interviews He has to do interviews because to be fair when you're leading a team like he is and you're the one that basically everybody's looking at You have to carry the team. Youbody's been aller on Gary. I think it's hard when the players a younger to go Its sometes task for players to front up to the media here. It's easier if you're winning games he's got a I think that's part of his role now. and that goes back to the tackling back obviously getting doubt about Willie Stattin, which all seems a bit silly now And I think he's getting a bit old. He's grown but he's had another year at Madrid. It looks like he's embracing on. you know is it not like he's're not shoving him out. he's gone. No, no, Step up to the plate. I think him and Harby Kane when I watched him in the previous tournament, I felt like they were almost fighting to be kind of that mean guy at times. whereereas now I think they've realised If the work together they can both do what like little bits where if one's gone off or they've gone over and they've picked them up, I feel like maybe they're to give it a. Yeah, yeah, I feel like they've done a bit of work on that. And this way you give the manager credit because the managers constantly said, I have to get the players to rely It's all about the bigger picture. And certain players go through certain stages, particularly the players you've mentioned P players can look after ourselves, attackking players can be selfish. and I would knock for that. You have to be selfish So the manager maybe thought I' fire him up in a different way by leaving him out to start looking it maybe is, de Peny' dropping going It is the bigger picture. They're speaking nicely about each other in interviews as well where like d to yes they harry is the best, I think in sort of So there's a bit of love being shown I think off camera. Yeah. I think as well. Two clean cheatets have been good as well. I know obviously people have said we're being a bit open and we' give up chances, but you would have took two clean cheats in the last two games as well. Yeah kind of more p I think it's just good to see that Jude like because he's young, he's still young. wasas he still twenty two? justust I think Because of how he is and he's always been like that, that confidence, I think he's growing into it now, peopleople are saying, oh, that's the confidence you have when you're a great player. When you're younger, people say, Oh, he's too flash but when you're growing into it, people say, oh, that's why he's like that. Be perception of him has changed. I think so, I think people accepting, oh he's that guy, he could be that guy This episode of St to Football is brought to you by Skybet If you said that You've got two players that look like they've hit form and they're doing well. How do we now construct or how does Thomas Skeal construct A group of eight players and a goalkeeper that can feed that machine up top, which is Bellingham and Cane you will deliver. We know they'll deliver. How How is he now constructed I must admit it was his biggest challenge. We're moving into now glass half empty a little bit The eight behind doesn't look like it's connected. It looks like they're delivering in moments. There's no real combinations or patterns or rhythm in the eight behind right now is it's almost a little bit like it's. So how does he get that right? Because there are concerns aren't there in terms of those sort of other eight positions? All of them, I'd say, to be fair I liked what you said about keeping the wingers wide, especially when you've got the two hundred tenens because at times when I'm watching, I think players are taking too many touches. like you can't run faster than you can pass the ball and sometimes to break down that low block, I think we need better ball speed and if the wingers stay out wide, you're going to obviously stretch them a lot more. So I did like your obviously I've loved all your analysis. but I did like that bit because If the wingers come inside as a eight of a ten it's justink your spein but he's not he's not picked those wingers. The wingers that would do that the sort of Gibbs Whites Fold's palmers are not in the squad. So he's got wingers that are a bit wider. Let's just talk about the wingers right now in terms of sort of where they're at because when you're looking in a negative way you could also try and spin that and go Well one of them will get up the speed soon. cross. The four of them can just continue with their doing All you need is one or two N for them to get a little bit better to get closer to Kane in Bellingham They need a bit more support at the moment you think the to alone won't be enough. No I mean, look at France and you think of Turkey coming on as almost like fourth sub, you've got Barcly, Due, you've got Dembelle they're so good, aren't they? I mean fact their wing their wide players Denbell the other day scoring with both his left and his right foot Yeah. I know that we haven't got wingers of that quality And I want to come on to Saker short to talk specifically about it. but what does he do in those wide areas I'm not sure what more he cans to go. He can only pick them and they perform s that's what we're waiting for now because he's showing faith in Gorden a couple though it's not quite happen for him You know,'s played Mad. if we're going to be totally honest all of them up to this point apart from Rashwood's goal U Madauee looks like he's tried but then the final final balls not being great I don't think it's on the manager that. No, that's on the players great just not perform. We always say to players, if you get an opportunity, you've got to take it. it. And these players haven't quite gbbed the yet. beauty with sport, you'll always get another chance But obviously there's more importance on in these games in the group games, you go, o, right, we could maybe slip up one and do the games Certainly at least one of them has to start turning up She ss with two white pers have I still think Rashford st which I still like Rashford. I still le you think Rashford for all his even even yesterday, There was a few bits where youone I still reckon if you' a full bat and you're upst Rashford. I' still thinking Listen, is end product is always a question mark over all attacking players. Ily hes still a hard guy to kind of that's where. Even the first half, he kept running behind You' obviously defender I think when are stretch all the time it is That's where I got to. I thought who would I want to play against? I think they' want to probably play again. Id probably I wouldn't want to play against R because it to be fair to him, as many times as he was a little bit clumsy on the ball or he might have overrun it or the defender might have took it off him. He does keep doing it Yeah. And he does at some point he will may or may get something to happen On the right We couldn't have shown any more, L loved Oaka I don't think over the last three or four years and rightly so because he used to be fair, been an absolute Well, and the warriorors probably too strong a word, but he to be fair delivers for arsenal week in week out. He's been the equivalent of Salad, not in terms of the goals, but he's there every single week. He's had this injury, this severe hamstring injury doesn't look right at all. I mean for him, he's usually the boy that's bubbling, he's smiling, he's got sort of that competitive edge to him He just doesn He does look sh. He's not right and that's a real concern for us, I think. And I think it's sorry right. Well I think we were talking about attacking players You know, if you've had an injury, if you come back in the defendnder or a midfielder, you can get away with it. You can, because you're just shiftting and you're stopping people from playing When your whole game is about sharpness, people decision making. So physically again, we mention is he trust in his body? And if he's off a little bit with all the top players It's huge in it? you know the's not hiding place. And the thing is, when do you know as a foot You need that sharp move and you're not confident enough to do it And then when we watch Sacrit mom, he is, he's going, he's going, but then Stop he's coming back and he's playing inside. You know, is you're looking for that sharp blast and I think the Arsenal fans know as well and been looking And we can see that has this been for longer than six yearsth Austrready? Have gone back as far as six month? I think we can go you can probably go further. I think go you can maybe go like to the Amstring injury coming back from that and it was always going to be and worry about arsenal and what we're trying to achieve and the rush that we're going to need him back. every remember As soon as Sak is not in the team Winsackerb back, Winsacker back. So No matter how long they're trying to drag outself he needs to rest. As them trying to win it pressure Arenal under all the discourse about Arsenal with him not playing, us needing him back. Has he been rushed back I'm asking, I don't know. you know I, I'm asking is he being rushed? as he pushed? Because we're talking about getting into a worldorld Cup. and still not starting the first few games then starting a game when we're what freeing now, freeing and he still he's not looking like the sacker up We know that sharp sucker. I think that he's somebody that probably You know, the amount of gamees Whats his body man which like Does he look does he when you look at I think then players have to trust their bodies, they have to believe He's got to be explosive doneuny if you want to go past somebody you have to have a sharpness. And if he's if he's constantlyinking we won' play with injuries, we just got to be careful. but when you're it's about reaction and speecheduff string I think it's com down to I think When we look at how he's playing at the moment and it's not the same side, that guy has given everything to Arsenal are now ask to have done that And at the moment, Roy is not is not the player that we've that we've seen before because I still think that he probably needs He needs a couple of months or he needs to So rest Beause we're talking about from the age of seventeen, all the way through to here with all the pressure of Arsenal, all the games he's played for England, he's played in all the tournaments. There's not been rest anyt time from that time to now. Of course you look at him is's not going be the. Could it be mental as well as physical, it could it be been mentally's something because I think this guy needs a rest break. I think Decklin's not million miles away from the same thing. him in Decklin I think I do remember this happening with England in the past where players have had three or four, five years of constant sort of high level performance demands. they play every week. They obviously they' good professionals and they just get to that point where they just drop off the edge of a cliff. It feels like dececklining him And it's understandable by the way, because I think if I've seen it before in England've seen the pressure arrsenle being on the to have been a maj play L pressure Champions League pressure then international to C get a lot bad G on G. I was going to say is it bad for him to be classed as like a game changer though? like because he is a player that can come on, cut in, make a moment out and nothing be a bad thing. to be a player of that com. might be good It's a good point, Joe, because even we saw when Maduueke played and started the game and then he came in at the end and then just that little bit of quality in class where he passes it through and Rashford scores, maybe at the moment, maybe that might be a role for him because I would like to see him rested And if you could come on and be in a role where he doesn't have to blast through but he can get on it late through to somebody' it's a concern I see that. to say that your number one right winger is got to be rested and he's got to come on as a sub is already a sort of a concern If we see that with just I agree with you though by the way. You're talking about the demands of playing for England and obviously, but that's the demands of being a football Yeah. You've got to be robust what you can't play if you're not right, Roy. I think he's being pushed into suc. Oviously But but if you could look at loads of other countries players who played and lots of players go no, I play all them games, right Some players play fifty sixty gamesease for other clubs to go the Chapm' League play international football. So we're saying Sack has been under huge pressures 's you got to be robust to be a footballer. I'm saying' I'm agreeing with you, but is that part of a football's journey? we go you got to get trud theseays. I'm just thinking back to two players who were explosive players who did pull a lot of hamstrings when they're younger in Michael Owen Ryan Gigs. Jim Mc Gigs at the start of his United career, pulled a lot of hamstrings I remember Gigs saying to me once, how could he stop pulling ham strrings all of a sudden when he was like twenty six, twenty seven I think don't sprint anymore thought it was really st it's likeike I seem spr every week.'sucky because he's gotility know Well what I'm saying Yeah, I remember him saying to me I don't run at a hundred percent anymore. He said, I pull it back to sort like ninety five percent and make sure I just you know imbalance defendnder. And he still played on. He said when I go hundred percent where you really like every he said that's when I pull it And I remember Michael Micha Owen coming back from his and he wasn't quite just got that sharpness when you do when you hamstring badly, he's had an operation on the that hamstring, by the way, as well, when you have that operation on it And you just wonder whether he's going to have to not just necessarily in the short term But in the longer term, you just have to look after that, because it's a bad one, isn't it that for And the thing iss changing his game. means literally changing his game. Yeah. The thing is I think even can you imagine Because we know what an Achilles injury is like and how bad that can be Imagine it is now, is he's Ailles, Yeah. and I think can you imagine you're nurth trying to nurse through that where Yeah. If we're talking about sprinting and sharpness, you're Achilles at now' the most canan I tell you something component you need? What could it be what's the ben if he's having all these issues and you're looking at the bigger picture? Well he shouldn't be here and should he really? you should be resting. Roy that's I suppose that's we're going to come on to that in a minute in terms of Reast James, L Remento. Yeah, but didn did't not play as much football as sac. No no, my point is though, the injury they are injury prone and they've lost them both. So my point is when you pick players who have, you know, socer with had an injury coming into this tourament So he's definitely not in the Reast James Lverremento camp because he's played a lot of thatotball. but he's got he's carrying a knock. Decklland' obviously been carrying this issue for quite a bit on it which he obsolutely they brought him with But just, you know, you said, should we abroad Saka? shouldhould he be here if he's like ninety six percent, ninety percent I used to as a football player, if you're two, three, four percent off your nothing. You're either one hundred percent or not it for for the attackking players for the attacking players, I mean? Yeah for the attack. If you lose a sharp this is an attacking player You can just and if you know it, Nev, if you know in your head, you're not at your sharpest, you will stop taking people on. You will do what's maybe sack and up. I'll just go back in and maybe the next time I'll do it instead of you're not going to play your natural game Obsly not Could you be overthinking manage your look and go like I'd rather have a Dcklan rice at eighty percent than say another player with a hundred if you think the right for midfielder, I think, again, we go back to I think the attacking players physically and mentally if they're not at their best or sharp. there was an inc yes. I remember he was kind of played through You know like he was favoreite to get a sack and he just Again, if he's not trusting his body I'm worried. I'm worried for him for now he's in this World Cup U he's trying to play through this World Cup, wherever, but then the season starts again. Yeah. The season starts again. So when is this guy going to get the rest that For me, he looks like he needs Yeah, I think look, I think it's a concern. I think it's a big concern with him that he basically is in this position because I don't think when you know, Rooney's come to tournent when he wasn't quite right and I Beckon comes to tournent when they weren't quite it right Becks comes to tournent They don't get right. You can't get your fitness. People like to Brian Robson getet your fit in a tournament. No this is not this is not preseason training. This is a World Cup where everyone's at the absolute sort of height of concentration. and I do think you're right. I do think he's going to have to be a sub playayer. I you know, he's going to have to play he's going to have to come off the bench. And yeah, the games can just take a massive toll as well. obbviously if you win the World Cup this year to eight games That's a lot, isn't it? It is a lot to be available because people were saying, I think it was Jamie Caraga actually did an article on Holland being rested. I think it was and they were like, o should he have been rested? But I think if they can afford to rest the big players like Declan Rice, if you could potentially Mess solast eight games. I think I remember playing seven games in a World Cup and I ran seventy seven K in that time I was dead by the end of it and I just think to keep your players fresh for the latter stages is especially not physically, again, it's mentally I think this could be the first time I don't know with you guys as well that I've seen a manager that hass picked players that I They have been prone to injury And I've had injuries during the se and they've still gone. Well, let's come on to that now, Ry, because we're going to get to write back in the It's a position that gets mocks quite a lot on this. get aall.' next game. my image of soccer is in tournaments. in being sharp on the pitch in beaming with a smile and being on those inflatables in the pool the day I mean just the happiest person in the camp and I've not seen that in this tournament, you know what I mean? It's that coming to full backack, which look yesterday We got the team news through and obviously Gerald Kanzer was at right, Mac and Look actually you thinking did okay. in the game I thought he was quite sort of you know, it was a six out of ten performers I thought he did his job well against poor opposition. and his poor opposition. Bad thoughts to myself How have we got to a situation can't be what Thomas Tool's planned. Hes picked two players that you say are basically they are injury prone Reese James and Livermento. they get injuries they are They're not robust. You talk about robustness this Rroy, they've been robust. And to be fair, I have A lot of sympathy for players who were injury prone because I had the lads at United to be fair were injurred used to feel sorry for them because they don't want that. They feel like they're helpless. they feel like they're not supporting the team We've now got a situation whereby General anzy is playing right back Andrentxand in a squad of twenty six, we haven't got Trent Alexander Arnold. I did say that program we did before the World Cup How can we not have a place in a squad of twenty six Tre down Rle, even against the Ghana or Panama or Deep line. It is wrong is It's a head scratch. It is wrong that one isn't it? I mean you can't say it's right when Joeal Kuand' is playing right back in again. Yes. But this is why Gary when when that happens, you have to go well Well, we'll see how it pans out because, you know, and now we're at a place where it's panning out. This is where the question can be asked because quand is out now as well. iss out. He's done his out Yeah. And so now whatens God forbid anything happens to Jed Spence? what do we do? Is Shallibar going to play right back? Back to us C complained, but at the same time, he's brought Shallibar in But then you're changing the two c a half, you know we just just it just feels like the planning. Did it say James might be, I think they said James also He said hamstrings. Of course. Oh we just be speaking about hamstrings now a hamstring. What are I say a week? So then if it's a week, you got a risk then you got to try and train and you get yourself then it's not like, oh, in a week, o, you just jump back on the pitch and you're fine. You're still worried because it's a week Well mine's two weeks after the bike and I'm just walking, so he might be alright. Is there. Have you definitely got a hamstring? Yeahah, Well I got one. Have you got a hamstring? Yeah, it's just becausecause I talk like sprinters I know more. Ive never pulled my hamstring when I played football because I wasn't quick enough to do use have hamstring. I never pulled my.ing I didt, especially when I did We did because we were explosive. explosive. But the thing with you was actually She's sitting down and then all of a sudden when you're getting up, you're doing something else So then bam, you've gone to another place with your hamstring. Buter to get back in how long, like a week? would it be? I never I've never heard of a hamstring take a week. Yeah. know we should I'm on the show today? physio Is what we you have underh today. G's a head j up on these injuries? Yeah. This medical experts. that It takes your blood out of your body. when that gets you back quicker. to be fair, looking at it now, Thomas Tkool, look at end of the day're in we're in this position at England or They're done everything that you would ask them to do. Finish up with the group you know, playing against Kongo in the second round. in that sense, you know absolutely snamp everyone's hand off. but there are some sort of there are some things that are just little bit But does it happen to every squadronb? Is there always a bit of no You don't want to lose or four right backs obviously. But when when you when you name a squad at twenty six, Can you be a bit blsy about, you know, the Certain players, you got twenty six surely would be fine. I bet your deser squads going're hard arbor issues with. You saides there Roy, He doesn't know his best to leven. you said that after game. So I'm looking at this now I'minking about okay, who's playing right back? who's playing left backack, who the wingers is he' going choose and's decling rightice fit in midfield You've got you've got question marks over all positions really. I think so dude and the goalkeeper maybe. the goalkeeper Yeah ye Yeah. So what'm saying is that isn't that is a worry going into a knockout. You' have it worked out by you What's a big worry. Usually you have you might have you a solid nine or ten you got question mark little winger. Yeah. but he's got that over far too many posions Pition Anderson. he's a Yes, right You know thing is you know, can to be honest with Anderson now, especially when you see Jude playing like that Ding to come backack. Now you're thinking Okay, Yes, Anderson and we's good' a good play' been a good player under too cool Th you're thinking now Do you move Jude from that position and put into ten and you know, when he's being so influential there canan Delland come in and play six And so you're thinking now all of a sudden Anderson do we change what we've just done because we've got the best out of Jude Because if Decklan comes his play do this place I'd be a one hundred percent not. I mean, personally, I think what he may do is put Anderson he'll never drop Anderson. So Anderson will be here and Decklan and Jude might be a little bit because Dckan can do that for arsal, hasn't? he He's done that before. And Zuber Mend's been like here and got Ed to Gard and Rise. Deckan can go forward a bit. And what So Rogers would come out And it would be Jude and just I agree with you, maybe a little bit deeper than a ten. but maybe it's decl sorry's decckling Jude in front of Anderson. I think might be where he ends up. He's not going to lead Anderson out. You need them all doing the hard yards anyway, especially if we're going to play an or the other side, but if you come up against some big nations, you can't just be a ten that wantces a fancy wall. You need to be Hards. It' the full backs yeah you're breaking it down, but it's the whide players maybe the full backs you're thinking. T the ones probably give them sleepless nights because we know rice and Anderson, they can produce The thing about the fullbacks and the wide players for me are that it's not just a case of knowing which ones to pick, it's the fact that very unlikely they're going to be able to develop combinations and sort of patterns with each other. I used to think if you playing with the right winger It's very important the right winger and the right So the right back and the right winger have that combetation. I'm not sure now with So yesterday, we were talking for the. I think Rashford and Rilly could I think there could be chemistry between them. I think there's more potential for them to have a bit of Rashford cutting in or Ry is comfortable going forward Yeah outside or inside and we saw onn the right I think it's look when yterday, we said sacer in the right one's a big problem. I said it'll be a problem for sccer because I saw Kans are playing the Carabal final it right back and he use he does a steady job there But you're talking about the fact that that subtlety of like the Ben White sacker combinations or the timimber sacaer combinations, you don't only get that because you're not going to get that with Kanza or Jed Spence and sacer. Yeah But the thing is I think that Jed Spence could play and go around saccer because he knows saccer is coming inside. So why are you then gettingetting somebody who's not going to either support him by going outside him Someone like that who know Yeah. It doesn't make sense. It didn't make sense, you know Even if you're saying, let, you know, I'm going to play quQum but Let me play J to Jed, I want you to get up. Saka's going to come inside, we know that. I want you to get outside and get crosses. Why didn't that happen does Spence have the quality of like I think he producce cr. you know what? You know something, Roy? No because everyone says he's in the team because he's a good defender. a good defender. but we saw in which game was it where he blast came up much approacure trying to get forward. So it's not like he's afraid to get forull. He should haveore it would have been a great qu he? I think when Jed Spence gets forward, I agree with you. he can sprint forward. and I think he's got great energy I thinking that I don't think it's combination with his wide player. I think it's just a sprint forward. I don't think it's like I don't think he's dovetailing with his right winger at that point personally. as I see, I don't think the subtle pass is being played with his and combinations. I don't see that developing. Jed Spent, I think I think will do a very good job against potentially like a Vidicius Junior or a I think that's why Tkle tried to probably he was looking at Ben White Pro exactly the reason why he was because he wants somebody for a combination like that. Yeah, I think that's right. It was It was people saying why now you could see you wanted him and soccer to makebe Well, then why to be fair does play quite well with soccer that you have a little bit of an understanding and probably Madwy as well because obviously played the same blowback mean Right backack has been such a rich position for England over this last six seven years and we're almost like scrambling. You know, Kyle Walker, Tripia, Reese James. He's like now Livermmento, Trent. He's like we're now scrambling and the kid that's playing for real Madrid He's not here. But why is think Trent play like it can't be football in Reasons, It can't be truly I must admit if look yesterday if I was watching that game, And I was Trent Alexander Arnold armer Fold sat home Gbs. Gibbs White. I've been looking at that game, what have I done wrong? What have I How have I not impressed enough to beat in this squad? You know, for me that I willll be asking myself that question Harry McGuire also went public on it. I do think personally, if you've got twenty three players in a squad, which is what historically managers have always had, if you've got three on the end of that, which we now have I would have thought there would be a space for Trent, Palmer and probably Mcuire because McGuire on corners by the way in free kicks is a massive threat Yeah. Yeah we got through that game yesterday through unlocking it from a corner. And MagGuire is the best at that to be fair to. So I do think those three selections at the end. But when he gets this job the manager, there has to be an element of like they've given him the job for a reason Yeah. So you can't you just there has to come a point. It's not norm one having a debate about it can We can keep talking about players who aren't here. The beauty of international football. sometometimes when you can people go you go, I can walk with this twenty six playing with ands right back. you do talk about. I don't not Of course.. Yeah, you can talk about it and go listen Will he do a job from and talk about his pluses and minuses for the players who are here Yeah. But you can't keep talking about players who aren't here today. R the thing is that Be when he made that decision, we were like, allright right the manager made it clear I want I want it the bigger picture I want He said it from The first time we got the job, I've never heard a manager talk so much about I want a group of players who've got the same aims, who were good travelers, who were good to sit in the bench, wh it be the Hendersons very train every time you spoke to the media, yeah, I liked their attitude train him was exllent. He talks about the little details. So he's gone with this group of players Sometes we can analze the Licos, but he's the one who sits around a bus, sees him in the training ground. Obviously So there's no question about these lads are are good players. Maguire and Trent, they played hundreds of games experienced international players, but he's seen something in these l that he didn't fancy in. And the thing is right is that he's seen something and all that's all that's fine what you're saying, but like now wearing a quest When a sit judge you're questioning what he done then because he couldn't question it. Yeah but're saying you question England top the group They've got a game coming up, you expect them to win. J say Spence does play right well. And this happens in lots of international teams You kind of fall into a system, you fall into a right bat you go, Do you think he' be starting three mons go? No, no. Spencer was down to pecking order. But what happens in football players? no you know what you've ended up getting Be of far and injuries. you can fall into a system of play. I'm sure you happen when you in England, players traveling you got, didn't they keep you playing And you land on a system. I fully expect England to win the next game comfortably And then you're going, hold on a second, something might happen here. This episode of Stick to Football is brought to you by Skybet. Okay, let's cs the chase Right now, we are in this tipping moment where is it good? Is it bad? Are we right? Are we wrong? Who do we pick? That point that England always gets to in at tonement and obviously it'll work itself out in the next two or three weeks Where now in your mind, Ian, Roy, Jill, and I'll answer it as well. Where do we think England are getting right now? The likely route and we know this can change. The likely route is Dia Congo Mexico or Ecuador in Mexico in the Azteaka. one. Brazil or Japan in's a tough one. In Miami. I've been in Press with. And then Argentina, I think it is in the semi. So it'sil you know Brail Japan's play tomorrow, don't they?ight? So who did it play after that didn it? I don't know, but we're talking likely rooutes here, but what I'm saying to is now Roy, where where let's start you in because I'm going go around this way. Where are England getting to with what you've seen so far? Where do you think England are and after an assessment of the group? Where are they getting to this tourament? interesting to I think that u You know, if we get if we get to Brazil I think we can beat Brazil and then I think we'll probably have problems after that. So beating semifinal I said semiinal from the start, but like I can't offer what I've seen up to this point Banking putting everything, all my chips on harrying and Dude saying that we can get to the semis right now So what do you think then from where you are now, from what you've seen so far, Where do you think England are getting to Sis I'm going to probably say seis because I said that at a start. It could be Argentine in the semies. Well w they won't go beyond that. like you know what, I have to say the seems because again You know, there's players us here that when you're first starting to talk about where England gonna to get in the World Cup that are not here. Just answer the question. So the fact is it's not still say still say ses because seem is with a bit of doubt Without doubt. S' with a bitb. Yeah se iss a bit ofoubt without a doubt What' doubt. Roy U best semies No I How long? You took five minutes down They definitely won't go I can't see beyond the semifal and I've got me doubts about the qualterifying So what could be last sixteen So are you saying qual final So you're saying they beat Congo and Mexico, Ecuador.. And then you think we could trip up against Brazil. Yeah. Butite could do. and if they win but absolutely no chance to win beat Argentine, if they play in the semies, I just can't see it I'm going to go a final. I see us in the final. Wow. Yeah a big sh awome. I think we'll get a bit of momentum though as it goes on as well. I think the last two teams like no disrespect and allgan have obviously Nil Nil, but you can only play what you're up against as well. I think I think will hit another level when the opposition gets. Do you believe that th? I need a lot of players to A lot of managers said that two could said that yesday he said, we will get better about it was J Jioson, did I said at the beginning like what the other eight players that So when you think of like Messi and Alvarez as they example, right you think, okay them two are going to wins the game The other eight Argentinian players look like a massive tight compact unit that are going they're going to die to give them the ball to win the game. That's what I'm thinking. These eight players that are going to serve Jude and Harry that are going to win us the games obviously, you narry fantastic players Have you got the confidence that these eight players can come together as a unit I've not seen it right now, I'll be honest with you. In terms of team structure, I do know what you mean. like going into the tournament you would have like to have had like a set eleven that you can work on, but I think we've got a lot of players that can produce moments out of nothing. And I think that is inter national football. So I do get what you mean. what's the structure looking like behind? haveave we got players in set positions? There's going to be a lot of changes, which isn't ideal, but I do think we've got a lot of players with individual brilliance. So maybe it's not going to come from a strong structure, but I think we'll get over the line in the Its a final. I'm going to say a final Yeah I'm I'm semiinal Maximum with doubts on the quarter Okay, as we are now As we are now. What does that sentence mean th or quarters I just I think them win can be Brazil's fit Brazil Brail fifty if we got to Brazil the quarters That is like honestly it's fiftycent Yeah they've got Kunya, they've got Venes and they've got Iucking's the other one Rafenia Raf. Yeah So they've got three players similar to ours that can go and win them the game Yeah, but you're not sure about what's behind it. I think similar that's where we are right now. You got you're pretty sure about Bellingham and Cane quite sure once behind it. And I think can that win a Wor Cup? I think Angelotti would you give Angeloti? could he Would you look to him a little bit for when it's a fifty fifty game, would you think Antibati is going Antati will just go to He'll just narrow the fours and then he'll just leave two players up there win in the game. He'll have Vin and Kuna and just say that you two there. He's done that for B Madrriibin. Thatusts my point. you think he's got to That's what I'm thinking now right about us in terms of, you know, we're talking about Anderson I say we're talking about Gordon and Rashford and we're talking about Sakara and Madwaki, but do we just narrow a little bit. We've got really good players in midfield with sort of Bellingham Rice Anderson. I think actually those three are decent. If you can get one more you want to Do you want to handbraak back on When did they want the handbreak?? No No, but not you but everyone was saying with the Croatia game, the chat at half timee. but I wasn't upset I wasn'tlly upset after I gar. I was upset with the way we were on of the Croatia game. Yeah he was supposed to, take the handbreak. You remember my reaction after the Croatia game, I said there were a few problems in that game. I wasn't fully comfortable with that because there were things in that game that were for me were a bit Chaotic was the word I think. But you should be we're talking about the defensive. I'd rather about two clean cheets, so you're not g giveing them credit for that We look at the opposition something. If you had a clean sheet? you you be happ with a clean sheet? Do you know? y? I wanted two clean sheets after the That's exactly what you got. got I don't mean negative against the clean sheet. They were D you get They weren't great clean she.ble good on the record I thought they will. But Panamas to be fair, if they had anything about them, they were poor I mean, they would have st.ot a great clean sheet like with a few stains on And on that point, ITV seven England are back in action and another fifty thousand jackpot is up for grabs It's completely free to play. Simply make your predictions now on the ITV seven app or website for your chance to win. Good luck, eighteen plus and TNCs appied I to introduce Ian who's come me with slide just to at home and away with for the last fifteen years, I think Well done, Ian What do you think Ian? where do you think we'll get to of what you've seen?ve se semif final. Not Mexico. Okay, Argentina. Gaso. Mexico In interesting Interesting. pull this go G We' do it? Will it support you of me even if you're wrong Mexico great. I'm back in it. Mexico or Argentina.ing Gary? Mexico It's not electical answer. Well the Conantwell C is aricle This Argentina. That's ridiculous of you g. You ever seen it Right? Well, we messed up on that one This episode of S Football is brought to you by Skybet Duncan. I mean, the place to start probably before we get into the Scotland performance, obviously them going out is the fact that Steve Clark it's never nice when a manager loses the job after a tournament or hands his resignation. What's your first thoughts on that when you heard that yesterday? Shocked on ait. It's just se the four your deals, you know? Yeah. So is it a bit of a knee jerk reaction I thought maybe. I thought it'll be back like that, Mbe he's been getting me bit of stick. And he's maybe just in good enough That's what I thought originally, you know what I mean? whyy were they So in his resignation So quickly after the game So quickly how did he know get in a plane? go home Walk the dog they whatever and the decision happen then is he beating it like? Is he beating himself? obviously there's lot of scrutiny on every manager at the world Cup Scotland, obviously had a very tough group. Is it a case of sometimes when you're a manager, you beat yourself up so hard that you just think everyone wants me out. And ye. I remember Kevin Keegan just resigneding after the end of a game once with England And he just didn't give himself sh any games't? Yeah, Yeahah and he just said I've taken it as far as I can. Is the element that? I think it looks like that, doesn't it? I don't. you think it looks like that. just he just signed a contract. I know, but it was so quiet it was so I know that, but why would we sign it if you had intentionally Be Scotland want' to going to win the World Cup where they't going to win the World Cup. so you know, so why would they walk out because we've been beating Brazil. Do you know what I think theyough Duncan I think when you come away with a group of players for four or five weeks, he's on a brilliant job in terms of qualifying. Yeahah, you signed a contract int that Listen People sign contracts with different reasons they come over here three Tournus is involved with. there'll also be an element because he looks a pretty decentonest guy The way the games have panned out. you t it only window one game Rob is up against it way I kind of I think you probably I've done my bit with these players. I think sometimes I can hit you as a manager going I can and then the three tournaments they qualified for, which is fantastic finished had one win, I think, four goals in the were the nine games. I bet he's and another manager' you could reflect sure would know that you would know that before he say signing the contract. he's got to the players he's going. Why would if you' got players he's whyy would they say you'd have your minds up yourself have gone it'll be different this time. In the last two tourums before he came over he said, his interview's gone I'm a bit more older. I'm older I and'm wiser. I'm going to enjoy this a bit more And the one thing he didn't look even with the way Yeah, it didn't like enjoyed it No was that tape any but he's about that tape any he's not a smile of m or is he? Yeah. No, I know that Yeahah, but even now I He looked emotional after that interview, you know when he was even when he had a win in his first game, you going a big win for Scotland even after like that it was a struggle.' it was absolute you only be in oneill. He just seemed a bit downbeat. posossible Whats I just think he' spite's dummy tight with me. That's what I think enemy. That's what I think he's done. I think it's a reb of criticism es himself down And and he's done such a great job getting the getting Scotland to the tournaments. I think he's been I don't deserve this stick. me look what I've done Be' been he's I think I don't know, I don't not a guy Well I know maybe but he's an assistant at Newcastle. But he. I don't know what he's thinking, but just looks like chair,. It J justs chair squeaky. Is it so. It just looks like it's one that big ris saw that I d there is it? I tell you saw that? Did you? It like that it was running Norway. L What floor were you on? You're to see if you in New York? Yeahah. What floor are you on? I'm not staying in this posh hotel. This is too posh. Duncan just quit s change. Now you't school Sy is sorry'm sy I don't understand you just spoted on tooough. He's had enough of to criticism manager. Surely' had a lot of criticism being the Scotland manager I think for him to It is the work cu, but like for him to do it then after signing four years, it would be I think you'd regret that after a while. We had sort of a little bit of an argument bon at the end of the show yesterday, because I was like from my side, looking at the players that Scotland have. Did everybody expect against Morocco and Brazil were in the top eight teams in the world They were so narrowly beaten by Morocco in a they could have had a penalty. and then they got obviously beaten up, beaten up by Brazil, which I don't think was a surprise I didn't expect anything other than what I saw. Maybe they could have got that little bit over the line against Morocco and got that penalty, but what more could he have done? What I know there was now Royan Ian said yesterday they should have more of a go, but I was like, who are they going to have more of a goal with? Which players are they whichich players have they got that are going to have more of a goal? you know what I mean Whatas Scotland? Yeah. was Scotland identity the way they played the team was Is it high pression? Is it Well sa the hources for courses in the way and obviously the other team would m the position, didn't they so he was going to sit back. So wouldn't be high pressing? would' it be shankling and all that? Because I know that type of player. So he probably would be in his race to sit back and defend a bit more. againgst against against Moroko and counter' try to countert for a set play point good But the way you're describing it Nev is our teams come off after the World Cup. So youre thoughtau it was the best they could have done. You think no team should ever done over a cheap No, my point is that do the best team we ever get before Fr Scotland. If you said to me, how can they get a result against Morocco as an example, right I would have said sit in, stay in the game and try and get a moment where you can either win one nail or near really happened. I thought it nearly happened. I thought I thought you cant be going on after seventy seconds. look too be fair the boy handley steps up. It's a bad decision for him. but look to be fair he's playing at a level that you know, the can't that's a point. The guy can't run. My point is is that with the players at Scotland have I think against Morocco, the tactic that he deployed was the one that I think probably ninety nine percent of coaches would have deployed. sit deep Try and have a little bit of a go towards the end and try and get something get us overight, it didn't quite work. but I don't think I don't think he could have had he could have high press Morocco. No but he would look at he would look at his nine games in tournament football and they've just come up short in loads of ways like that. When we're in a mindset, we're not se for Scotland to go gong home. but you also against Brazil. don't want you're too send a house player or in the back and get the players. but you got people closing you down. That's where you might say to certain players, your identity might be going And go back to when I played with Ireland, don't be afraid't don't be a football snob here and go we can play around the bat and all let's get forward when we get up there. There's nothing wrong with it. What was the expectation of them coming into this tournament Eactly to get get the gp be that would have been good idea There's not wrong with that. Yeah. You know, maybe if they scored another couple of goals, I mean a the group I don't know the points went with the goals if it didn't help h I it.. I hate it. Yeah. Maybe they got a couple of goals or something. you know me the se P points get you through then No Did anybody got three points in meant three four points was deaful, why not. But they haven't massively underachieved, have that? A get out of the group would have been a big Has you had that stick, Ch I't seen any that stick. I mean, I know these have been getting them stick, not I mean, but I' not seen that much st of stick right I'mum N me when you look at when I look at you at a group of players and you think right, okay 're probably going to have to play a big deep because we've got no pace at the back. We're not going to high press because we haven't got possession players. Younger players to keep the ball You haven't got a Duncan Fergon that we can lump it up to or an Nile Quinn that Iland had and they had runners for midfield. So what has he got? He's got two players in midfield who are basically M McGinnon and Mac Tominy. He's got an aging backline with Grant Hanley and Hanley, Robert Stroy.age team on that road of an experience Gary becauseide country If if we're young you' be to an experxience. What do you want? You can't compare Croatia's players with Scotland's players. I not I'm just asking about the ages of them Now but my point is they've got an aging back four. They've got a midfield. they've got an experienceced back Okay. they've got an experienceced back for. they're going to play deeper. you've got a midfield, you've got a little bit of quality theginning match on it and you've got very little upfront. Is that fair But that doesn't mean said you can't get results. I think they getre qual qualified How did they quality? nearly did got D was' bad Moracle was ne bad can I say it don't good. thinkking bad something his groups sorry. Rob Moraco was't not a bad bad performance field I I mean I know we lost what It wasn't it. It wasn't our Tonkin. was it wasn't before we bought a for Brazil. We're green on the same thing here but I'm sureort of the manager's job is you Howood did a manager's job is to find a way. I'm happy to press Steaveve Cacked the course come up, but I'm trying to visualize a picture why he would say I've come back.ve done I've done as much as canam his. Its could have been the criticism qualify for treat of course. Its could have been the criticism why' through his visignation But where do what criticism come from, Duncan? I'm not sure because I don't really keep it update. It must have been for the Scottish press or the press or wh whoever it' been obviously if I've ham them, ven't in the fact that maybe they lacked goals or they lack on the front foot or something that people would just sayve becausecause of've lost a few games. but wouldn't say that because we say maybe they say set in a low block say get because gos against Denmark. in handed, right? I know playing that hand in a tournament full play thats in ten degrees in the middle of February is different That's Of course But it can produce results. Scotland can produce results. Look, I think to be fair, it's the fine lines of Morocco with that penalty stroke not penalty on Mat Tom and A and it was always going to be a case of can they get a point against scrap a point against Morocco? That was always going to be damn thep. I think they're always to get beat by Brazil and they did do the job against Haiti. so I think if he said Would the Scottish FA be putting pressure on him You't think so, I don't thinks so much just give a contact on me. Iife that' st for years You know, he's gven a contract and you' think you'd been seeing that contract too. Like a month ago he signed it or three weeks ago he signed it didn't they? So what's chang since then? But he's done a good job, hasn't he? Qalifying for three tournament. Oviously the next st the next step is to try and get it, unluck he's not done it, but. But a lot of managers leave a job because they will work with a group of players and he's been there for seven years. But seven years he's had eighty one games. he's not with the players for three hundred games It it and what he's ob comeing this tournament and the whole been look of the tournament history, can they get a big win? Can they get a big group And when they come up short, the manager has to reflect. And we said never never affected long long way longong day I never reflected too long. reflected for an hour. L he resigned. Nobody knew for three or four days they were goingone out He waited to officially do a gun. He to be off in two or three days in the hotel, in in with all the players sitting around reflecting. That's what managers do. And he has to look at himself going three tournaments now which is fantastic. My goodness I can't praise the man enough. But in the torreantee, we look at A lot of managers will leave a job and go, Wh, I've too these sccares as far as I can And I guarantee that'll be one of his main reasons. There might be something around the background. And he said with all his experience he said he's not thata he in The last two tournaments, I said I didn't enjoy. I'm going to join us a bit more. He did that a few weeks ago. What's something? Fr day one, even with a wonder againame we go it was fun, even afterwards was criticising go the way you' played and he probably just thought, I've had enough. The last three or four days would have been a horrible three or four days for him waiting for that sort of what would be that And Gary when you're waing, what do you think you're doing? You're thinking and you're reflecting. That percentage was just going down, wasn't it? It was like they've got sort what It was like I agree with, Duncan. I think maybe after the last game where youre on you're out and if flew straight back, you would have had breating space with his family would have gone for nice walks in chilla but he's sitting in at our hotel for three or four days and it's all Do you think is the Duncan appoint that you say you think it's because of the criticism that he's received in this tournament But obviously with him being in the job for seven years, do you think he's looked at likes of TNA Robertson an and thought there's no one coming through. I actually think this is as far as I can actually take thisam this team probably is going to struggle a little bit in the next few years because I'm going to come go to the Scottish talent Bank in a minute and what Scotland's talent looks like in the future. If I was looking at that team and I said this should be on the show twenty six players there's some of them that I don't even know. Now I know I know some I don't even know don't out the twenty six Yeah. And going back sort of twenty thirty years like what Scotland the talent that Scotland had what what what is happening in Scotland I'm going to read these now don't that these two these two happen've we've got four or five in the Premier League. we've got three or four S h has in Italy But not that bad we've got no bad we pool of players. I mean, there's four or five in the Pmier League, There's three or four in this area and there's a few playing for rangers. It's not that bad. Is it strength and dips though. It's' going be the case for Scotland, isn't it really? I mean, There's long as to be a small nation,n't? But there's many's many people playing football is woke smoke smoke. Yeah maybe there's many people playing footb. I've been I've lived in Mi Yorka for few years right and it's completely different. It's completely different if you playing football in your country. They've got football pitches everyhereind and the sun thinkatia give used amount of like qualified coaches. Yeah. And the thing is, Roy, when you look at the size of Croatia and and this and and the same is as Scotland Croatia and Scotland are footballing nations. Croatia have totally invested in that. Why do you think they're continually produce that player. I have Scotland done the same. It't' that time. And there may be more people in playing football in Croatia. there may be less people playing football in Scotland, which I'm sure there will be. It's the weather, it's theictures, it's the facilities,'s all that stuff. you know not meember I wasn't living in New York I told you P peopleople play football fored Dusty Don. Theres twel o'cock n they playing football I mean, back at your company in N,ver misted the companies and there's a lot people playing football. used So kids are not playing football. No, I would say them there's less and less people playing football than there's ever been. Dg it is a amaz design when the team gets knocked out of a torn like Scottish Scotland did And all of a sudden people are asking questions about Scottish football and academies and they don't really care about Scottish football because everyone just is interested in theirraw own team. It's amazing that teams get n not fill for everyone st. People don't follow Sot Scottish football, they would' never clue what the Sottish league. then go. What's happen to Scottish football reason why I' go Scottish foot?, not really. The reason why Roy is because when you do look back on the past of Scotland They produced continually and they've always had that support and theyve always produced I play something Yeah, but something's happened right where it's not happening now because we're going to talk we're to talk I have toression I talked about this over many tournaments over the last ten, fifteen years about the Northern Irish players, Republic of Ireland players, welles players, Scottish players that when I was growing up in the seventeen eighties were basically infiltrating the top clubs in England. What's happened? What's changed either in those countries or in Pmier Lague is that where the ch at D't need the sculpt more has got bigger. These cubs are on sculpting back in the day. They were just I'm going back to the manion ees I just for back in the eighties didn't always have an Irish connection, but no the scope world. They're looking Afica they're looking everywhere. But these players played for Manchester United Arsen, Liverpool in the nineteen seventies and eighties Duncan. I've not even got to the Ya, but this was nineteen seventy eight Martin Book and, Brianclair, Joe Jordan Arthur Albestost and Jim Layton Gordon McQueen, Gordon Stracen Charlie Nicholas, Kenny Algves, Graham Son, Stehven Nicol Steven Nichol Al Hansson, Gary Glb Johnalkon were in games the Wor Cup No, I'm not saying they were, but to a fairoy back then it was a lot harder to get to a World Cup for a start. It was like a tournament of sixteen or like it was harder. It wasn't afftty. thoseose players now would be getting into last thirty two and last sixteen Dunan Th players right were great players in any generation. Why have Scotland look, you've got Andy Roberers who's done a great job Liverpool, You've got Mcuinn's doing a job at Ville,'ve got. Yeah. you' got three or four, but you used to have a plethora of players there that played At the highest level of just the top three clubs in England, manan United Liverpool and Arsenal in the seventiesread the spread there on ten, ten, fifteen years so big Thatots of generation. What's a different era of playing football g don I'm asking a question. What's changed that Scotland over the last ten to fifteen years are not infiltrating the very top of the Premer League the same way Premereague ch, or is it the Scott kids not playing? It was toughern' it? It was tougher to getting the Premeragueit W wasmb back in her day. Ms much tougher, Don't we fore players in Pmi League now? Isn't there my fantistic' be bring pools in the world class players aren't any the team. so the Scottishland make nobody getting a chance? Well the O Englishland hass no quick getting a chance. Why is less Scottish kids playing football in your words than they were? Well, I remember back in the day, we used to play football in the studre, didn't? Yeah. And before you know what the signs come up didn't they no ball games allowed in or that used to be usedually to batatter the bff of the boys who season everything ring And used to put the signs up in the nose to play the ball game. that started it. We used to play in the street at the time. there was always pitches available for you go playing. there was always people wanting to take the teams. I was I got through the Byss Brigade, I come through the Bys Brigade. there's always people willing to take lads to go and play football and girls. But that's may be changed. The people aren't willing to volunteer to take it because foratever reason But Duncan Scotland have produced some of the greatest coaches in the history of British football and some of the most fantastic players. That's a fact. That's just the fact you'm not going back to Dennis Law and players like that. point is a long' get that That's. if you're Scotland and you're trying to reinvigorate this country into a Croatia which is, you know, four or five million people. You've got aot, you've got a football passion up there and so. How what askerred to England Duncan About fifteen years ago, there was a reset we sent George's Park. Right? And whatever you say from that moment The women's team had gone on w one tournaments, the under twenty ones have gone on and won tournaments. The actual national team have gone on and produced more better technical players than they get into semifiles and five. There was a big reset in English football ten, fifteen years ago from the FA that to be fair has brought reward. It has. I mean, there's been that's all I was saying when I was saying that Scotland their vision isn't boningough. What's Scotland doing know There's probably that funded it begin, I would think And also like it's like everywhere, peoplee are building on pitches isn't us? Like there's a lot of development going on in the country. People are building hses and things that so you know you know that the facililityities to go and play football have y Yeah They've no go up backs in George's Park or these academies or whatever you've got in England. Money does come into it doesn't it? mean be put lot of funding in there Kep in fies of tell me playing f. You can still find I talk about when you get to the tournament, still find an identity where you might go where Y. You're up against it. We had it with Ireland a little bit a bit like Scotland, you're always up against it prodroucing Harry Kaynes and these type of players But you find you find something what Scotland have done to their credit in terms of qualifying It missed that last bitch. so wouldn't have come over here. What if Whatever success they've had in terms of qualifying, they've just come up short So I don't think it's a big major major thing is it really? Well Well bey Brazil I think we're going back to point with Steve Clark. I mean, you know I don't really know why he's through the toling, but I think it's going to be better needj react. What's next? What's next's the Who's the next cult of Scotland? That's when I read it. I thought He's justrown. He's just thrown it right in the deep end there because isn't ne it there? Who is next? Duncan you can do it. Well They can phone if they one. Wh is next Who is the next Scottish coach? We sayay loads of good Scottish coach's new all of a sudden because again, we're not getting opportunities. English coaches you making big get opportunities Scotish coaches are going to get opportunities. Who is the next guy? It great job for somebody. That' a fantastic job. Wh who is that guy It should be yours' coming up. It's a chance for Scotland to qualify for you. So if you if you're some topough managers out there looking for a war Scotland's a great job. the. I knowob I would like to see a Scottish feell in char Scotland. I'd like to see an English guy in charge England. I'd like to see a Brazilian guy in Chsday to Brazil. That's just the way I am at. I'd like to see a Scottish fell in M Scotland. Is that a guy because sucks No, it doesn't know but Well the players have got to be Scottish. So how come the man's no Scottish That's way I look at it for For the players have got to be Scottish, other players got to English You you't anl lot to be manager of Brazil then.ag I think Brazil su say their aint Brazilian manager But they' going to be cp but they won't be worri about. All That's a different point. Im just see person had Jack Chatten trapp a tournent. I get that. I think the Irish fans when they were singing a tournament which were worried about they were like done a job I'm arguing that. I'm just saying our map performance would be for a sc. So who? That is all Wh which got us who's out in the idea becausecause there's nameedav. The only one I could think about is David Mysby' in a job Scott Gam Scottam was to twenty one. he's been there for a long time. If that was a progressionot's beream soon.s Gream soon.s can we get Gream back? You may play as well if we're getting me play in the midfield for us. sometimes it's good though for a national team to be introduced to someone who's maybe not from the nation as well. like to introduce them to a different way of thinking the women's team. they've tried a German coach, shouldn't it? I think they' tried everyverybody's tried different coaches That just me a preference If you won the World Cup I't won the World Cup, she even you be b. would' no be better to win the the World Cup English fellow But you know dot think that'd be a bit better. Oh no. L I No a winner Well I've been in a job. I've been in a jress with people who aren't boughtom. Jack Chaton, neverever an issue if I thought he's really good for the job and he can moreotiv the team again. You're not worried about he's from Cork, Dublin or Duny Go. But W if he wish for Dungo and Cork or not, would you preferred that? If he was doing a good job But I must have I preferr Engish coach being Charer England, Duncan. Duncan, I preferngish coach be Cher England. but know I played under Sengor and Eson had a couple of squads withello waso Capello. So I've seen it from both sides I've never seen the benefit yet really of a foreign coach managed in England. Can I ask you somethingsool won it? Therety of teams here. How many countries are managers who are ' a lot b. money. I' a guess or a forty year. I don't know. I have a guess. I don't know. I a guess one five. twentyenty five moreore than fifty percent What was that? What did you say that? Or the forty eight teams are at the World Cup? Yeah many managers are here who are managing a team that they wantt born in. More than fifty percent twenty seven Dy S of. I think there's only one managerers ever winner There is no One' w the qual companies of different nationality. I kind of knowt know who has been somebody toen There's no.' seen this Lordge Jnglland win' it we are a genuine coach minusu. I't know what' made you know what I mean There There's not many people havev have ever done it. I mean, looks English coaching struggled now for a long time. English coaching saw of in the seventies and eighties with li of you know, Terry Eennibles, Bobby Robson at Barcelona and PSyhind overver and Roy Hodsummers International. They they all went overseas and did very well obviously know English coaches has struggled in the last twenty years. What What would happen? What would happen is right? If see the Preier League hired all British coaches or English coaches? What would happen I w in would w in the league. Whenne they would win the FA cup one they would win the Lague cup, whatever it was. No the then they'd all then become winners So youid all he English a British coach he's winning winners and the te who's going to do it? The only difference is then is That Kennidate in the Champions League, that was the only thing I bit. The thing is Duncan, the reason that to be fairred that isite dreaming's not you fall on. fall ony would clubs? Wh would clubs appoint English coaches if the England national team want appoint English coach C but that's that is That's a big one, isn't it? It's not the great. It's not a great sign and a signal to English coaches when you' saying that baseb don't like you We want more coaches in the Premier League from England, but actually you won't even put one in the threeree out of the last five or six England coaches have been obviously foreign cultures. and look I think the Premer League has been rewarded and we've loved it enormously for the introduction of foreign players and foreign players fign players. I think it's been unbelievable. but you know we can't we're struggling to get footing. mean, Eddie How has done a decent job in the last seven or eight years. Harry Red Kap did a good job obviously at Spurs but it's been it's been British coishes did get tough jobs, didn't they? mean they were handed the big jobs really. The tough jobs't good jobs Dough done.ood did. they did good opport J Fr. got Chelsea job obviously Stehen got the vill job.' come good newew back. Yeah, but I'm saying is we have had We have had moments where English coaches have had decent jobs. Eddie got the Newcastle job, obviously. there has been moments it's few and far between's few. So on your reflection, Duncan, obviously, the first week of the World Cup, the Scottish fans Almost like they were sort of almost like they were marching across America into every baseball stage. It's not the first time marched across America. This' the first thing a master Cs anyemy in fight. W you know something D They ab obviously they're a joy. They're absolutely incredible I mean, just watch's your reflection for them of the fact that the money that they' spent, the time that they spent. I don't know how to do it, man. It's incredible. I't how any fan can do it, you know what I mean? But Scotland fans have always been fantastic, haven't they Whatever turn on the wentter I don't know how they find the money, but they tept to find it didn't they? They'd been incredible. And I think I think they would be there is that an issue where you saw with the fans? again, I go back to like Ireland over the years where T have a great crack to enjoy it But no there's a bit of likeame right No know the stillillid element of our supportor is Oh go. We just want a bit more. We want a bit more than the sn song. Ire of are like that and they want your team to have a right go and give everything win or lose and all that to carry on. have a go. And I think there's just been a bit on this trip where I think I'm sure if you speak to Scotland Fans gun, we just wanted to touch more, he's done a brilliant job L like everybody else watch thing. everyveryone wants a bit more I think that's all we all all do done. we all want to be bit how different I do I mean, I want toay I want to stay here. I want to stay here bit longer but unfortunately I''t be ha' tot get a againame g gameananda. But thank you. There' that many games coming isn't there that? And doct the final reflection from you on Scotland in terms of O Bonnie Scotland? It one sing along what is that there' Scotland. Come on, right toent. I' singing. pooor Diny boy their face. Final reflection, Duncan. is it a is it a big reset moment or is it just a case of no mean this could have happened the momention thats launed to That's too far. No ignore your le. I think the manager to me was a bit of shock, I'm leaving his contract and leaving Scotland So knew they're going to find another manager It's going to be difficult, isn't it and and it And and as you said, the pool of players might not quite be there, but I've got no bad bas. No, come on it's two years to the Eururos is it? Scotland've got a hard time to be Italy out here. There's a lot to. I'm talking here aboutryc. Pase give you some more support. So ye Yeah well that's a v, isn't it? There res. I don't need you manag,'t such the same problems. he's going to come the same G see points, Keen, But you most jobs had problems rightready? for Der. I think it's a great job. Winter Scott Can I leave with Winter Scott and F? when theyre going to have a reset For the fans so the fans can have likely say a little bit more. It's got to come from somewhere ase keep thinking that the managerers going to come from somewhere and then cajole these players to do it. It's a great job, Roy, in the sense that managing a national team to be fair a tough Scotland is a proud but what I would say is if you look at the pool of talent that that manager has got to go in and work with You know, it is tough. He's not a big pool of talent. I just say the one of just you see in p all of them M Bundy, is it W at Hull He could have been in this squad He was the top go in the championship for Hull. They're not in the Premier Lague. The boy George Hurst M Burny at Hull on it he scored in the playoff final Yes. He scored fifteen, twenty goals in the championship new. He's up to the Pmer League new. They' a good boy called George Hurst who is at upswitch who scored about fifteen goals for Eswitch. He's up to the premiership new. So there's two strikers there that willll be in the premiership next year this should have been maybe playing or in this sard, you what mean? But this There will be a lot of people in for our Scottish job. A lot of top managers will fancy that job I wish them well. Duncan help you get up Yeah done much D. I'd sort em break too, that's for sure. Thanks the point. Duncan I'm speing you s sls of the basketball club. Did they tell you beat me the basketball? I say not told everybody, isn't it?, thanks you very much I believe I believe' cross the road and did this thing. Duncan This episode of St Football is brought to you by Sky Bet I'm amazed when te get knocked of a tom and everyone's worried about their grassroots and Everyone looks after themselves. But England to be Fairrooy did have a massive reset with a big investment and a big sort of play around sort of coaches and stuff and to be fair, they have improved I know but every's worried about Scottish football and nobody watches Scottish football. Nobody watches Aberdeen or R I'm sating it purely because Scotland have gone out of a tournament it's obviously a big news story. the managers said that I won't be g evening Well we shouldn't just be concern about team when they get beaten in a tournament. No, not that money infr structure of Sfolk, Ireland. I know that come just talking all of us come to a point where you think, what's g wrong, like we're saying what's gone wrong because now it's going to a place where They've done well, they've qualified, but then it's just completely stuck. The managers just resigned just like that. We're speaking about them now you say we don't watch them on a regular basis in that because I don'tot I mean the Scottish League is the structure of it. becausecause I said the Scottish feder they need to do more to build that league. Like he's saying don't play footb and they ha't got nowhere to play football They've got to look back on the that's the SFA, but they' they the politics ofs because Celtic and Ranges obviously Celtic are only interested in Celtic Sulfur don't interest in sulfur. there's a selfish side to sport. Oh they should to do some because then f Ireland not brought up Ireland's problems. Wales haven't qualified. Northern Ireland all these like smaller countries, these battles are constant And a lot of it will comeount to the dollar. Staint George', How much was Saint George's now? Back in the day, it was hundred and od million, but it'd be now probably two, three hundred million if you built Right. So you were talking about that. Where do you think these countries are going to find when they've all got real issues going on? Ireland is stayain? whereere you going to find one, two, three hundred million pounds? But I just think if you've got look, it depends what you' pulation dec population. Yeah, depends what you'. If you've got sort of like health, wellbeing, mental health, physical health and you want to drive sort of outcomes on impact those things in a country, spport and football, particularly in the likes of Scotland and Ireland could be huge drivers for those types of things. But in Ireland, for example, again, we go on to to money. I mean you've challenges were about kids. But what happened to kids back in the day playing football? You got iPad. you got different challenges now. Kids are going away from Ireland a competition for other sports, rugby, harrelland football, for such a small country These are ongoing challenges and you just have to wait, hopefully every a few years a Robbie Keen will turn up, somebody will talk Wales a Garre Bay a Ramseay. That's what they other footb they're not going to produce eight nineteen. But if you're a football association of a country, for me, your only job really is probably two or three things. One is to make football accessible for every kid in the country. makeake sure the infrastructure is there in the facilities and make sure you've got coaching programs that are a good quality. to me That's your job as an association. So England to is fair to them. I'm not saying the outcomes have been amazing because obviously we' not w a tournament with the men, but the women seem have won two tournaments. The under twenty ones the under they've all wonournaments' been a big So it's actually happening that you can see were they doing for thirty for years before?? No no, but I get that. But at what point are the Irish FA and the Scottish FA and the Welsh F going to do this where they literally put football at the heart of what it is? And I guarantee if someone sat here from these associations, the SFA, the FA, we' haveve done battles every single day trying to get facilities We go back, we're trying to get more quotes coming through But there's that many distractions in people's lives now and different It's easy to do, Roy. That's the things easy to do but someone had a long time to get to that academy at. George's. Why did they do it thirty five years ago? They tried that with inish thirty four years. didn't work. It didnn't quite work Yeah. But England to be fair have tried. and look the FA takes. England there are a lot richer countries in Scotland and Ireland. And look they go with the Wembley revenues, they get a big crows, they obviously get sponsorship, which is more because obviously there's But you know in the last twenty years, the production of English technical players, the likes of Morgh Gibbs White, Palmer Fold and Bellingham, Rogers Essay You know, Madwk is Sa. We producce more Yeah I think we've what England coaches but a lot of these lines are walking under farm coaches and Banningham. they've gone abroad Kane. He's gone to Baron Munich. They're learning new experiences. So when they turn off for an international football match you put yourself there is Ding the manager. When we were in Ireland Steve Clacks with Scotland and you're watching your players come to your hotel and it's sometimes as simple as this is. when you're sitting there and you're watching Harry Kanwalkagea Hotel. They're bringing Spurse traits in terms of amount the golds he's got. you're bringing Berm Munit traits. you're bringing them to the building Bellingam walking in the room you gun, wow I think we've a chance to win in. Scotland, Ireland, Wales, unless you've got a bale You're wealcking playerson coming from the chap. My point is they're bringing their traits to your international team. go back to the IrishFA, go back to even the women's team with England where Jill talks about her experiences of being flying in sort of what will be terrible sort of conditions, not having good hotels, notving facilities. You had it with Ireland obviously in the Worldup R. But my point is now the women's team do get, you know they get looked after a lot more. Theyve got a facility at Stain George's Park So now they're winning because they' got but I guarantee if you spoke to theen's the England manager or the women's team cil battleles going on the background. That's probably they ha'ts always going to be as people people so much better. you left the tourent because of the standards were nowhere near the acceptable level of a country. the FAI is a bit more than that as well. I know it was right. The FI. And the Scottish Fe, what I think what Ry is saying the other is, when are they going to put football first and start to start to build these sort of center of excellences in these coaching programses and these Do you want to sit here all day and criticize the F I'll join in. But they're also good people at these arent. But that's my point, but it's just ongoing battles It's politics as com team members working for different councils and' your b They obviously want order to do. of course they want national to team do well But again, I think we all do we maybe sometimes we live in a different world, we're live in a bubble, sometometimes you have to reflect and go particularly when we're talking about Scotland today There's a lot of people in the background doing massive work it's challenging And it'll come down to money. and England will have ongoing battles.. I don't think money's the answer for everything, but I tell you what, it's a big help If you can help get coaches, Ka, these countries you go, no we are a step ahead of everybody and our kids are coming through moderate. you look at all these pers careers, I, but they're all they're used to qualifying for tournaments under sixteen youth twenty one. They' tournament train players look, I'm riffing here'm making it. I'd love to be interested. Scotland is a good example in Ireland I look at how many these Scotland players have played under twenty one tournaments, underrating tournament where their tournament ready. But let let's say Roy from now on, right, They're going to basically sort of a big investment into what will be four G pitches up Scotland because you need to make Ashetur because of the traditions And then you've got a massive investment into a a center of excellence. and let's say then they're going to fund Let's say forty coaches a year Up in Scotland No fund forty coach to go and do the German pro license, to go and do thepanish. The Spanish pro license, the Italian prorol license. I'm saying just and giving them are they doing the things thousandousands of coaches, forty is not the answ? I know, but I'm saying just let's start with the top forty coaches. The prime example, you mentioned Croatia I' been bring up Croatia. You look at their record of producing porches Yeah Thousands. Yeah. Not forty. I know. My point is not four hundred hundred then or one hundred and fifty coaches a year in Scotland and Ireland, seend them to the best pro licenses in the world and say, look, we just train you up and get the intelligence from other countries. right. I wouldn't finish on this. So you're on about these coaches. seend them on under pro licens. Brilliant example. Brilliant example Have you done your pro license? Yeahah? How much should the cars cost a lot of money? it costs a lot No they have tound it they have to fund it. That's what That's my point. But you have if you' about thousands of coaches, that's hundredundreds and hundreds of a millions at some stage where someone' have Soere do you think they're going to produce these countries have sacrifed these. These countries have got problems with the government trying to get funding and people are trying to get houses Football is near the bottom of the pance importanting hospital, schools then com send foing coaches toly on a coachhing and b ifve got people you're the street. If you're a government and you put physical wellbeing and pee at schools and sport at the bottom of your list, not thinking it can help with antis social behaviour of mental and physical health and wellbe and all these outcomes. know the health, the NHS in England is overrun, the NHS in Scotland is overrun. And if you don't think football and sport and physical activity is at the heart of that and inspiring the new generation through football or wom'en's Fantastic. I think that' to me fantastic. If you don't talk about England, I was an addressing you with twenty five years ago, thirty years ago. All you ever spoke about were you sed you when you came back from England Best it did We did. Private jets, the best medical stuff. did. Best Hort to England will be one of the best prepared teams of this World Cup. Absolutely. And what does that come down to It's money. P is money. I know, why don't the Scottish and Irish goovernments invest they' got money ' they got lots of money?. the Irish gonment. what I' was saying. That's what I was saying. Republic of Ireland isange's But you know about our country it's not Republic of Iland. You you know happens to all of us sometimes we do. It happens to us. We're in a studio. Sometimes you don't li in the real world we chat about. Oh, they've got get hundreds of coaches. They've got to get pitchures might be in Ireland Rockwind, they're battling to they're battling to stay alive. Yeah Survival lights. You't of these some of these smaller clubs, rooyal team Cub ramblers. I go back to the ground s the same ground I left thirty years ago. I know it It'sst right. the Republic of Ireland is a quite wealthy country right now. It's doing well ecomically challenges It's got cour. It's got But if you want to divert your funding to something, I wouldn't put football or sport at the bottom mayaybe not in the bottom. But there's other stuffisten there's other of stuff more important than sports sometimes in life. Is we sit and go The sports like, all of a sudden today we're talking about Scotland's problems tomorroworrow we' be talk about Sotlandops. absolly.'. Lets go toanattan go shp.' feel go made down. Scottish fans feel thiss theoo Why does that have to be when you're knocked out of a tournament next That's when you notice it more But that's notady, ith or is it reidady?ight we're not sating telling Scotland now how to run. I know. We're just asking a question. I know a lack of disappintment. I get it. We're coming in a sense from a kind of a good place. But I'd love if somebody was sitting there going L you don't own the half of it. I can imagine the challenges of getting funding of his priorities of funding and the Irish goovernment and the Scottish goovernment have got to surely look at health and wellbe outcomes through sport as being a big fact and get more kids into sport. If you said to me, what would the be advice I would give to parents up and down the country, give your children a sporting upbringing because it'll keep them out of trouble. It'll keep them healthy, it'll keep them competitive. youll learn about discipline, losing, winning friendriendshipsious level. I' app you of that. You have so much to go to. you need coach you, you need someone to give you a lift to g. Exactly. That's all proud of sport England's success the last few years ago. England have done really well. A lot of it us on the back of Harry Kanaine. It's great if you have a world class striker, then that can l can lift your country and carry bail bail don't know what wheels of a sudden Bale retires what happen to Wales, all of a sudden Well it' strange enough, they're not getting the results they used to be getting. Ireland had some really good players a gold score, Robby Kink helped the team for years. When you a gold score does help Scotland's enough for this tournament without a top class striker And if they had they probably would have got that drag against Morocco. you wouldn't be sitting there worried about Aberdeen Academy, you wouldn't be But whales who Fair produced Us and Rush and they never qualified for tournaments. No no. It was harder to qualify by then, right? You keep saying that guy was a lot harder than it was. You keeping Wh was Scotland's last World Cup though? ninet that's one like what did we expect from this one? Surely, it's a process. They've made the World Cup okay. they didn't get out of the group. The next one they've got and then obviously look together done to getting back Well they've done okay, haven't? they qualifying for the past three tournaments and nowolute I agree, go back. What's the next step in making it better, but I don't what happens in life over the last few years, it football, snobbery or were watching the Brilliant Man Cities or And everyone wants a bit more from their team and Scotland's fans will be the same. Irish fans will be the same. listen G all these pubs and have a sing songs fantastic and they've been classed, Scott Ireland the best, the best in the world. But there comes a point where they're looking going, Listen, we love all that, but we want our team to just more But does that point on this World Cup? or do you know what I mean? just prep in definitely the last few years is a bit of from what they've been watching on the TV and they watched all this tippy tap. Scotland gave up a couple of calls against Brazil. Guess what they were' doing? Plingo from the back. No that's another side too you go, Hey lance we know you can play it Let're in a cush against Brazil, did I think they might close you down Yeah Anyway, I'm talking about. the chief execive or chair of Scottish avable to come on sit to football, please come sit with us and Are you going to pay for him to come to st st's come and challenge us in terms of you knowm the massive challengge. Anway, veryy good section on Scotland. It's nice to talk about Scotland with a bit of passion. You're right. You only talk about these countries actually when there's something goes wrong to be honest with you, or something goes wr. Be we at play place side is that's when it's more polariseds There's microscopes on it and you realize, well, why is this happening to him? Sly since ninety eight, Scotland ain't been here You know, you think, well, what's going on all that time? What are they doing? Why Scotland there when the fans start wanting so badly Battlland. but survive. But I know that there's this thing like Scotland all like England and Ireland all like all that s, but actually from an English perspective genuinely want it's better for us a tournament. I generually want Ireland, Wales here. I generally I genuinely want them may. N not saying I want to go ahead of England or anything that I don't. I want England to look with you know guarantee to your is in two years' time, hopefully what obviously Ireland and Wales and Norn, all are you trying qualified I guarantee they qualify you go players coming through or one of our top players has stepped up, it'll be I wouldon't necessarily be going back to like academies and grassroots stuff. we just produced one or two players at this but. It's timing. And remember a throw the history of the World Cup England a number of times didn't qualify for the W Cp. and what was going on there? so you might look at that Ireland se. The history will tell you but Ireland England didn't qualify in ninety four So know, that's not sixty years back. I did a game earlier on the tournament and it was with An and And Anne' obviously worked one hundred year plan. He said they got a hundred year plan follow No, they're thirty five fo. but you look look at improvements of Japan in terms of their play. They beat England up at Weembley in Mars and you see the way they're developing their coaches, their game and you think, okay, have the Scottish FA have they got twenty year plan. Have they got a fifteen years plan Have they got a vision What is the vision for the next fifteen years of Scottish football to get to a point whereby infrastructure coaches, players get to a high level. What's helping Japan do that I reckon Of course the money R right, but it's priority of funding is the Irish government and the Scottish government, maybe the UK government. They know important sport is to them as well is why they've got a hundred year plan. They're not even doing it for themselves., They're doing it for a people in a hundred years de. Yeah. what is the vision y? To be fair to England, they did put I think a twenty twenty five year plan in place when they built Staint George's Park and it was, I think it I can't remember the name of the chur. they of fund, wouldn't it Obviously I' agree with you. Andi Gont and said, we do have a plan and we will start producing players and the women's team doing well and's obviously that's good for the country and good for the economy, of course there. They will have a plan, no onender they may be just sting Yeah we found the FAI and I'm seeing Roy Keeene Satday and I'm thinking about a twenty five year vision for football. what does excellence look like and where do we want to get to? And how can we bring the great Irish players that are now in football at sort of what exX players How did we bring those minds together to create what would be a system of working for the next twenty five years to get a center of excellence, a coaching program that's wor. tried that? That's what' say. what are these people doing? H haven't tried that? Yeah To me, it doesn't happen. so anyway, o This episode of Stick to Football is brought to you by Skybet.
