Download it for free And we're back. We've all been toying with the idea of dabbling and kidnapping. Well now you too can. It's as easy as using a chatbot u to, you know, forge a video of a kidnapping victim and essentially, you know, cat fish or whatever you want to call it, there're loved ones and convince them that they've been kidnapped only to realize that they haven't after they've paid up. It's not that much different than actually doing the thing, you know, if you think about it. It's just sort of it's the future. Now we can kidnap without putting anyone in harm's way. Thank say 'ilar similar to child exploitation, right That's a thing. you get all you can handle of that over on Grock. Did you see that inflatable that was in Times Square recently Yeah,' a giant inflatable like Macy's Thanksgiving they parade Syle Inflatable of Elon with his little mantets out and a hat and on his, you know, his guty written some of the effect of Grock creates What you just said. childild sexual materials. cororrect. These are a different terms. But it was he also Very sarcastic congratulations to the world's first official trillionaire. Love that What are we gonna do with all that all them trillions? Probably good stuff, right Yeah, nah,'s good stuff. sorry. This one comes to us from onene Eyed Cyclops, which is a delightfully redundant name, and I think that therein lies the joke. One eyed cyclops here, I left a message tonight about AI kidnappings in which I was quote held for ransom and my parents were tricked into paying thousands for my Release. This is unfortunately a seemingly very effective scam in which parents are confronted with pleading screams for help. and in my parents' case, it arrested all critical thinking well put, because they were terrified for me in that moment as they would be. They're good parents. So also parents sometimes they just don't understand AI. So they did whatever they were told to do in order to Save me ese scams are designed to apply enough pressure to force people out of their rationality into a panickic state in which one cannot be expected to think clearly. I was less than a half mile away from their home when this happened, safely playing video games in the loving care of my partner Meanwhile, my parents were frantically driving around town wiring money to God knows who, money they most likely will never see again. Fortunately, I am safe, but unfortunately my parents are out money that was supposed to fund their emminent retirement. Even worse I think they will be permanently traumatized after being led to believe that their only child was being hurt or worse did. I know, this is intense. We did file a police report and the local PD informed us that this has happened numerous times in our town just over the past couple of days in our community alone God knows how many other families have been through this elsewhere. I hate to send them the sob story, but I also hope others can be spared this trauma. One ey, cyclops, I hadn't heard of this at all. So you're certainly hipping surely a lot of folks out there to this seemingly pretty new and cutting edge ish scam Whenne I cyclopse goes on, my mother and father just faced the possibility of their daughter being taken away. To them, it was very real. Even though I'm still here, the loss of their child was very real to them for over an hour as they did everything they were told to do in order to save me. again in quotes It's hard to Grock LOL if you haven't been through it I have been through it now and I still can't quite come to terms with what happened. But what I can say is that I have never seen my mother so distressed, so panicked. She really thought she lost her only child I fear this trauma will be permanent for her and if awareness could have saved a single parent from this experience, then I think it's worth talking about. Use my story if you wish or don't But I really hope this can be a topic of discussion. Well, we sure did and we sure thank you for sharing this experience as traamatic and awful as it is as it was for your parents. And then after the fact, surely, I mean, you concern for your parents mental state and how this could haveed you know ramifications for them, not only that with their mental health, but also of course their retirement savings. Truly, we appreciate the openness and the candor. And this certainly can be something that could help a lot of folks. You know, it is one of these things where we it's all fun and games with this AI stuff. It's like, okay, you know, certainly there's some fake news, there's jokes about boomers reposting AI stories on Facebook, et cetera, being misled, rabbit holed, you know, radicalized, things like that. And all of that is scary, of course. but now we're talking about actionable real world uses of this stuff that ain't just calling and delivering a bunch of pizzas to somebody as a prank. I mean, this is like Serious business. I've actually heard other stories regarding similar use of AI technology. I think there was a TikTok streamer that actually is facing some pretty serious consequences for his actions. and I don't think it even matters to name this person because it's not really worth our time or giving them a platform, but they were doing some of the effect of creating AI generated videos of a policeman's vehicle damaged by kids by teenagers or something like that, and then showing the policeman this trrumped up AI video, at which point, same thing happened to the policeman. All rational thought kind of goes out the window and all of a sudden he rushes out. And the point that I've seen made in reporting this particular version of this kind of use or misuse of this technology is that rationality out the window could have gotten someone shot Yeah you know, likeike if there's someone just happens to be hanging around the car And again, this is not even like an indictment of the police. This is literally just an example of that like you know, panic brain that can be brought on by seeing something like this Let's guys. I think it might be helpful to go over I like plan for us to do if we get a message like this, specifically one that's being described here by one eyed cyclops So in Let's imagine for a moment We get a message that appears to clearly show Tennessee Powell in distress being held somewhere What what are our what's like, what's the first step we should do Contact him, try to, and then contact the authorities That's is that really all that's like Yeah. Well, that's like that's going to be the immediate reaction. and one ey'd cyclops greatly appreciate this correspondence. But in in this thing, one aspect of of this horrifying experience that you and your parents encountered is wereere they, you know, what's the substance of the AI phishing scam that was sent to you. Did it say something specifically like don't try to contact your kid one eyed cyclops, did it say don't contact the authorities. Usually kidnappers will say something like that, but logically, you would want to see if there was real habeas corpus if the kidnappers did have the body. And just really quickly, we just have to remember that this is just another example of preying on older folks who are just not hpp to this kind of thing, who just not don't have experience with this kind of thing. I mean, the old trope of a trope, I guess at this point of boomers posting stories on Facebook and getting radicalized to this kind of thing, but this is obviously a much more direct you know, real world use of this kind of tech. So I mean, I guess what I was getting at is like if it were happened to me or you or Ben Matt or Tennessee Pell, we would probably give it a second thought But then the question becomes like, where did they even get that voice prrint? How do they even like How do they even like have access to that to generate such a very easy. There's a great and frightening article from june fifth, just like ten days ago as we record on june fifteenth, out of PC Mag by Kem Ky. This nightmare AI scam is making parents believe their child has been abducted and it hits on something. to which actually Nat Dylan, myself and Noel are pretty vulnerable because we have a large footprint of audio and visual data along with a very easily breadcrumbed connection in a lot of our cases with relationships and the nature of those relationships. So AI cloning tools only need about ten seconds of clear audio to create an effective voice glow dude up Just quickly, recently I was out of town with my whole family And my dad got two separate emails Uh while we were, we were just hanging out at this place He got two separate phishing scams from two separate alleged banks in the Midwest while we're there just hanging out And we we were recording an episode. You guys remember we did one where I had a weird background pretty recently. numerology, I. Nerology and dude I walked out and he had already been dealing with it for roughly an hour, but kind of just on his own. And it was my parents who were Both older trying to figure out how to deal with the situation, trying tryrying to understand which phone number do they actually call? do they contact? They knew not to click anything. But it was still super confusing trying to understand like what actions do I take now Do I need to take action? Do I ignore this? I think we were all sort of dancing around it a little bit or we were getting close to getting to this recommendation that I saw on a Fox Houston article about this particular type of scam. Some local law enforcement were interviewed and recommended establishing a safe word with your family and asking the caller for that word. and if they can't give it, then of course that's a sign is fake. Also, you know, it's the old hold up today's newspaper kind of situation. But again, these aren't designed to for you to go through these rational steps Like they're designed for you to panic in the moment and not be prepared for this kind of scam being even on the table So I think, you know, in general, if you know about it, there's lots of ways that you can protect yourself and your loved ones from being scammed like this. I would just say it's a good thing to talk to your parents about. Yeah. For real. Absolutely The existence of how deep and weird and accurate and convincing these kinds of things have gotten. We need a new poster It says C confirm everything Talk to your parents about artificial intelligence. Do you ever, especially as your parents age, do you ever find yourself wondering what you can talk about with them in your weekly call or your check in, Well, here's one and it is going to be impactful. I totally agree with that. And what I'd cyclops were We're so glad that you and your parents are safe hundred percent. Um I'd say I think we got to the heart of this one. Hughes, thanks again for giving us that detailed rundown of someone who's experienced this. directly. I haven't even heard this one or catalogued it yet It's a response from somebody we know. about something we discussed last Listener Mail So here we go. That was Jheef Ben responding to your by name, which I appreciate call out about food. You know, I'm always here for you I'm always here for you guys. Brzia Im in Im in, it's not a traditional for a quesadilla, which I'm automatically going to go away from quesadilla traditional flavorings and such and I'm going to try to make it a little bit trickier for myself. papers My immediate thought is Bagels and locks. So here's what I'm going to do. theoretically, I'm not going to make this Unless you guys come over to my house the cheese for this quesadilla is everything bagel seasoned cream cheese You got smoke locks on there, you got red onions on there, you got capers in there. You got dill in there Now what you do is to complete the bagels part of the Cesadilla, the Caeredilla is you serve it with instead of salsa. A cucumber and tomato salad, fresh salad with lemon juice and parsley, more capers And then you're good to go Happy to make that for you. if you guys happen to stop by Chicago As always, feel free to use this on your show and I'm just honored to be involved Yes, chehef. I remember reading the transcript when that one came in Oh man, Cerea So it's the new Fita bir. little They're a little controversial though. Some people are that's not their jam. I really only I know I enjoy them in a pasta situation. They could be good in a pasta and really do like them of bagels in locks. You gott to have it. I don't think it's the same without it. No wait, hold on, Dylan, what is your idea here You've written something in the chat I think the chehef Ben's idea is much better than mine where I was thinking just putting chicken picotta inside of a tortilla and maybe like the cheese is a ton of Parmesan Oh bad. okay, bad You know I' tell you, I had a sandwich in Queens other week that I'd never had before. It was like a hagie, like like a you know, a sub, but it was with a fried chicken cutlet and like peppers and Balsamic Whoa Gotta get one of those muffle letders can't stand those things. Yeah What's it called? You don't like a movev of that. It's a oflive too much. You don't like olives. Very olivees. For some reason when I think about capapers, I think about olives. Okay,, guys, let's jump to the meat of this sandwich. It's a message we got from Frog Daddy after some other discussions, about maybe some privacy issues. I was gonna say issues. All right here we go. Hey, this is Frog Daddy again I just listened to your last listener mail episode and you were talking about flock cameras Cameras aren't really on my radar, so I don't know a whole lot about them, but they reminded me of something that I'm not entirely sure you guys have really talked about at least recently the metalasses that are coming out. see them advertised everywhere on social media and streaming services and They seem like they're going to be pretty big and I think the implications for those are a pretty big deal. I mean, you're being filmed without your consent like all these other cameras and also they'll be used to train AI, undoubtedly. So I think there's a lot that can probably be explored. the metaglasses The more and more I think about them, the more I u Don't like them and think about how they can be used for all kinds of different things what happens with private spaces where those kinds of things aren't allowed like bathrooms or private businesses or things like that. So some to check out These guys are great. keep up the good work Dude, Frog Daddy. Love it. The good news, Matt and Frog Daddy is that they're still so damn clunky looking that you can spot them a mile away. Really? Maybe I don't know these new I mean w Terminators It does feel that way. I mean, like I think I've mentioned that I've become gotten into a watch it lately. So there's a lot of YouTube content that I'm getting served up whereereas people like going into like a Rolex store to expose what a scam Rolex is and how they'll like lie to you about like whether they have the thing in stock or not and try to make you spend money on something you don't want to get the thing you do want and put you on a waiting list. So a lot of these videos are people wearing these glasses and going in trying to do a little covert neaky and they get called out instantly almost every time. This is what I recall guys. Last time we went on the Virge of Voyages cruise, we met a friend that we're not gonna to name and we were on an excursion with this person and he was wearing what I thought were just some regular Rayband sunglasses. And then he revealed to us, oh, no, they're metaglasses And then later on, we got videos of ourselves on that excursion with him from his perspective. And just how freaked out I was that that happened. Yeah. And I know you're listening now and you're a really cool dude. and we' loveang out with you. Yeah. And and yeah, no problem with you, but just imagine somebody who is not well intentioned who is doing that, right? Dude I could I gott to tell you guys real quickly because I don't think I mentioned it on air I was guessing on a show with some really awesome folks and we were filming in person so it's a video show. and I had been talking about the growing controversy of meta glasses, like how frog daddy, this is going Frog daddy, Matt, this is going to be used by police later if it's not being used already. as doing a coffee fueled rant about this, I looked across where we were recording and I saw a guy that I tremendously respect nodding And then I clocked, yeah. Those are the metaglasses And I asked him what he thought about them. And he said he after our conversation, he didn't want to weigh in on air just yet So I don't think people are fully aware what they're buying sometimes It was Ramsey, wasn't it? It was not Ramsey, but good Okay. all right. It was not Ramsey, our good friend of the show who who has a sick glass spectacles and sneaker game. But Yes, exactly. But I imagined he would be somebody who would brock them and you be like, wait. Oh, okay. Well he looks handsome in a thick frame Yes. I guess I'm thinking back to like the first time this whole conversation really hit was with Google Glass. And it was like you had to be sort of an influencer or get in on the beta of it all. And of course our good pal, Jonathan Strickland, who had a tech stuff teuff a podcast called teech Stuff. he did get them and they were so dumb looking and they didn't really do very much. They were a really, you know, early adopter version of this thing. And obviously Google doesn't really seem to be pushing that tech anymore. they've moved on. so now the metaglasses are more of the thing. I am curious to see how this does figure into because it has to be so widely adopted It's sort of like VR, you know, it's like if it doesn't take off, then it's not really a problem. How many people are actually buying andite these things? Is it a scale kick in and shout out to Tennessee. You're bringing back you say we bring back one of my favorite derogatory terms for this phenomenon. Could you give it to us on air? Glass holes, Yeahah, that's what people used to call Google Glass users Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow. That's right. That was in the early days Lassoles because they were some kind of actuallyual Yeah, they were there were be informative too. were't doing the things that Meta wants to do, which is blending in, but you've got to, you've got to know here, Frog Daddy that we've, I think, separately at least spent a lot of time thinking about this and I learned just thirty five minutes ago as right around as we began recording, Gizmoto did verify the prediction. Yes, Meta is testing police surveillance tech for its smart classes Beautiful. Pokemon go all over again. But then the question becomes like, is this bad or is this good in terms of accountability Yeah like for police. like, you know, obviously, they often are able to turn off their You know, it'd be great if it was just immediately uploaded somewhere that the public could just view Right or some body that is a third party to whatever law enforcement agency or Jice deepartment could just view that stuff. but we know that Th that footage gets lost all the time or misplaced or oh, it wasn't working or whatever. And It becomes like it just the addendum here for anybody who wants to read that article by James Perrow is that the company is developing these tools for facial recognition. Yes, which is precisely what we're talking about today and why we are listening to Frog Daddy's message here U hereere is some well and but before we get into that, we have to do this. in twenty twenty three and twenty twenty four, around two million of these AI empowered glasses were sold, which isn't a ton, right But then according to CNBC, around seven million of these glasses were sold in twenty twenty five So it does mean there are way more of them around, right? So I mean, again, that's not an incredible number considering the number of human beings on the planet, but you think about the number of human beings in the United States, that's a pretty significant number of these glasses floating around depending on we don't have the numbers for the US in particular, right But that's a lot of glasses. Here's why the privacy thing and why facial recognition is the problem Here's some reporting from Wired from june fourth Meta silently added face recognition code for its smart glasses to millions of phones 're going read just a tiny bit of this Code reiew by Wired uncovered an unreleased face recognition system embedded in Meta Smart Glasses platform. It's designed to identify people via biometric data stored on users' phones And that's all I can read because according to Wired, quote, you've read your last free article. But But Is want to tell the people. But I know it's true. It doesn. We can go to reporting from futurism becausecause they talked about this reporting had wired Here we go. This is Maggie Harrison Dupri, june eighth, meteta furious over bombshell smmart gllasses Revelation I'm going to read quite a bit of this guys, and then I'd love to comment on it. And I'm just ranting because it's part of the article and it's info I think people need. Last week, Wired reported that Meta discreetly moved to infuse facial recognition tech into his popular smart glasses as evidenced by a piece of code discovered in the Meta AI app by the magazine's journalists. The unreleased feature internally dubbed name tag That's one word, name tag would quote transform faces captured by Meta's glasses into unique biometric signatures commonly known as face prints and check each one against face prrints stored on the user's phone. This is a database currently configured to receive updates from Meta The report made clear that N tag is not yet activated nor is it accessible to consumers in its current form In an initial response to Wired, Meta referred to the discovery as, quote sensational and characterized name tag as exploratory you guys This isn't the first time in recent months that this name tag thing has been in the news because in February, the New York Times reported on an internal memo in which Meta discussed plans to install N tag into its smart glasses Here's the crazy part guys In the memo Meta noted that the ethically fraught feature should ideally be launched. Listen to this, quote During a dynamic political environment where many civil society groups that we would expect to attack us would have their resources focused on other concerns Unquote So like Well they're not being real worse stuff. Yeah. They know how bad it is internally and they know it's going to be a huge fight when they release it. So we need to do it when they're not paying attention. That's insane. And it gives us an insight into, I would argue, the motives here, Frog Daddy, not just the PR sensitivities becausecause they don't just know that there would be outcry, but they know what they will inevitably do with this technology. Oh yeah. And what we know about meta? All that data is for sale. That's like the main thing Yeah, I think I mentioned this onstrange News a while back, but the group Massive atttack, who I think we're all fans of, did a thing in their live concerts on this recent tour that I actually had tickets to in Atlanta, but then they canceled it for whatever reason. I was really sad about that. But they have a moment where there's a thing that happens where it literally flashes up little squares, hundreds of little squares showing facial recognition of members of the audience, along with captions saying creator of content, propagandist, hacker, analyzer, organizer. The idea being that you know they are in some way tapping into some database that is then tagging these individuals in the crowd for whatever anti government thing that they're They do in their free time. And they have they got a lot of flack for this because a lot of websites kind of circulated the idea that they were doing this for real they were actually pulling from public databases and you know, correlating the images, the face recognition data from members of their audiences with stuff from their background and creating this thing. So they actually had to come out and make a statement, which I just thought the way they put it was really interesting. They said As a provocation on the hyper expansion of surveillance capitalism with a bit of mirth, it works quite well with recent emphasis placed on ice repression and targeting of students and student suppression in Serbia, depicted via face tags that describe specific roles in student protests. They're just talking about the live effect using simple face detection stuff, and then it combined it with these fictional overlays that had nothing to do the actual This is the part that I thought was interesting and especially regarding what we're talking about. The irony of an artistic political satire being used to evidence the same controversial activity being used by the artistic satirists is very twenty twenty. And they specifically go into how Palantir is affecting their lives in the UK. An investigation by the human Rights Group, Liberty revealed that several UK police forces have refused to disclose details of agreements or contracts with U.S spyech firm and Gaza genocide profiteer Palantir. In fact, it was only via Freedom of Information act request we learned that British police forces are working with Palantier, quote to develop a surveillance network that will incorporate data about citizens' political opinions, philosophical beliefs, health records, and other sensitive personal information. Remember voting for that? neeither do we M And Matt, on the follow up here with what we're talking about with what very much appears to be a sneaky, spoopy doopy move by Meta. Could we talk a little bit about rank one computing Oh, dude, yes. Okaykay So The original wired piece came out on june fourth. Then it was talked about by a lot of folks. Awards, the one we read from Futurism about that article was june eighth on that same day on june eighth Wired put out another article. Meta deletes face recognition system from its smmart gllasses app after wired report And just again, I can read basically the subtitle to every wired article. So this one is the code wired identified is gone from the latest version of Meta AI, the companion app for the company's smart glasses. Ma won't say whether it's coming back But that's all I know Again, too many articles.. But there's another article that came out on june fifteenth, again from Wired under their security banner Meta tapped a Pentagon supplier to prototype face recognition for its glasses. That's where rank one that you mentioned, Ben comes in It's more commonly known as rank one computing or rock V ROC shout says Jehobvah Yeah Eactly. It says Rank one, whose board includes a former CIA deputy director and a former FBI science chief supplied face recognition to metap for internal development of its smart Glasses app which leads us over to ROC. Ai Rock AI. It says, The proof is in the pixels. Rock high fidelity algorithms decode identities with maximum accuracy and near zero bias for missions where speed, precision, and fairness matter Number one ranks by NIST two hundred million powering identity for the world's most demanding organizations. Yeah, and listen to where they said near. Perfect Because they this was formed in twenty fifteen by a bunch of very smart engineers who worked for a nonprofit called Nobless and rank one, I believe first got into hot water in twenty twenty because their facial recognition software was a big part of the first known wrongful arrest in the U.S based on face wreack. They they targeted incorrectly An African American man named Robert Williams for a shoplifting incident and he was jammed up in Detroit PD custody until some reasonable person was able to say, Hey, this is totally a different guy. So rank one is can say they're near perfect, but near perfect is not the same thing as, you know. Perfect And Matt, I think eighty percent of Rank one, revenue comes directly from government clients So it's got like shadows in tell almost That's where the money is, baby. The money is in them contracts contontracts we're not supposed to really know too much about, at least according to Rge againainst the machine. if you believe them Yeah. You know what I say guys, belieelve rage. Belve rage. It is so funny to see all of these weapons contractors we've looked at Over just what? a month two months maybe, we've been looking at so many different ones. You go to everyone's website, you see the same kind of blustery language on everyone. You go to the about section on every look board. You look at the team in the board, all these folks in their nice looking suits We're talking be Scott Swan in this corner in the other corner you got Josh Ks. you got Blake Moore and Tony Brown And it's just so crazy to see all these Dudes in suits And yeah, but don't the Trump kids haven't they benefited from some of these compations as. But a couple of them can't even rig a UFC game to save their lives. You guys saw dude. What do you think about that? Yeah, I did. And did you see that the guy that posted it now said that he was hacked? Sure. I would Wait what was this? And that it was all AI. So a guy gu posted briefly on Twitter, which some folks call X. UFC commentated. He had posted what appeared to be a series of text messages between himself and Eric Trump Jr., wherein Eric Trump was asking for for any side bets on rigged matches UFC Inider information it started off as him being like, are any of the fighters injured? And then the guy was like, why are you asking me that? No, as far as I know, they're all good. And then he said, I'm just going to cut to the chase. these are any of these fights rigged because I'm looking to make some money. I will say it's a little like too hand in the cookie jar. I wouldn't be surprised if it maybe was AI. And that's the problem with all this stuff because you know It's it just muddies the waters to such an alarming degree that now the bad actors can say and that's I don't w want to derail us too much here but that's that's no think for Oh, Daniel Corne. I really like him. But he's now saying You know because mean there's two ways you could look at it. You can look at it that he did this thing, tried to expose something, and then the pressure was put on him. Maybe his career was threatened, and then he, you had to delete the tweet and then come up with another version of events. But I could also see it totally being AI and him happy But it seems unlikely they miss It. It does seem likely folks that if you're enjoying this, you're going to tune into our episode on Raytheon, which itself might become a two part series Speaking of the big defense contracts and the incestuous nature of these surveillance and weapons companies boards You know what I mean? You see the same recurring characters pop up. And That's right,. I did not expect Justin Gateci to win that And you know, it makes me wonder all the things we've covered about sports fixing and things. I don't know, guys Oh was Eic Eric Trump regular, not Eric Trump junior. exxcuse me. I have a hard time keeping track on of which one's the junior Oh, that understood. But yeah, just sometimes you see these guys going and trying to win multiple you know, multiple titles at different way classes. You just don't expect them to win. seemeems like maybe a thing that's happening there, but can't prove it. Anyway, hey, thank you so much Frog Daddy for putting this into our attention sphere. We will keep an eye and maybe some AI empowered optics on this going forward We'll be right back with more messages from you This july fourth, comes celebrate at America's Block Party, hosted by America two hundred fifty. We're hearing from Kay. Kay, you wrote to us and you say, hello Hello. I'm not sure how to do the voice. And you say, I've just listened to your brilliant interview segment on Lucy Letepby, and I feel I can give you a bit more insight into our National Health Service or NHS and the context within which LL was practicing as a nurse. bit of info about me. I'm a crown servant who investigates avoidable deaths in NHS services. Kay, this makes you the perfect person to weigh in on this and we're grateful for your time You say, I've done this for the past ten years. Alas, I can only share information within the public domain because my role is covered by the Official Secrets Act nineteen eighty nine. And I can I believe we talked about the Official Secrets Act in an episode recently, didn't we It was something I genuinely can't remember at least not with regards to NHS. Yeah. Okaykay. Okaykay. we did mention the we did mention Ohh, you know what? It was Alistter We mentioned the official Cs Act and spying with Alistter. because we're on a first name basis with them now. K you continue AC AC, Big AC. Okay, you continue. You say I could go to prison for sharing information outside of the public domain. As we noted, even us yanks are aware that the official Secrets Act in all its forms is pretty serious business K you say, I mention this because I have a decade of experience investigating the intricacies, nuances and failings of our NHS O NHS is amazing I would take it in its current underfunded and crumbling form right now over most, if not all, private health carere models. Now Okay the four of us are thoroughly American. So I got to ask I got to ask the crew here Personally, I agree with Kay. What do you guys think Give me anything, any any kind of Nationalized health care. No, I know we talked about that in the episode though too about how we do kind of have this romanticized notion here in the states of what nationalized healthcare looks like and it ain't Perfect No, I would argue that even imfect an imperfect version of that is better than what we have here, which is either make the choice between getting medical attention or being Poverty is the when you think about it, I said this before, but poverty is the leading cause of death in the United States because of private health carere Do you guys ever wonder? if we've been in some way led to believe any of these things because I I fully am on board with everything you're saying. like I think That is all true, right? And I've seen instances of human beings being placed in that debt because of health care issues right in a privatized system. So I believe in my heart of hearts, I believe that a public system is better I would I'm so glad we're hearing from somebody who is actually inside it who can give us this insight Yeah, yeah, absolutely. you know, before we get back to K, we we do have to acknowledge Ths It shouldn't work for free, obviously, it's a very stressful, very high skilled job. And we have to acknowledge that in a lot of places that do have more of a public healthca model and treat it more like national security, which it very much is, people still have to wait sometimes for an astonishing length of time to get life saving care. And if you lived in a place that is more or less entirely privatized like the United States and you have enough money then you can get that organ you need. You can get that heart surgery and you don't have to wait in line with the poors and the public Yeah, you just gota find someone with a viable liver S our episode about the Red Market Oh my gosh, the pricing, the markup on those things is insane those things being human organs. Damnit. Okay. So K Continuing with you, you say, I've had extensive care and treatment over the years at no cost at the point of access, meaning know, if you're in the UK, you're paying taxes. So you are paying for your health carere. And K, you say, there's still a private sector here you can access at your own expense if you want to with the NHS, you get choice rather than restriction. neeither the NHS nor the private sector is forced upon you I have personally chosen, says K, to self fund one aspect of my care, but I rely on the NHS for all other care One thing to point out here is I'm going to focus on England The reason being that the Lety case happened in England Scotland and other developed nations have their NHS run differently. They get a set budget and those countries can divvy up that funding as they see fit So for example, in Scotland prescriptions are entirely free, and so is training to become a nurse or a doctor. That's not the case in England And that's cool. I didn't know that you could just become a doctor for free in some countries. Uh Scotland Let's go. Hey, Scotland, you up Hit us up in. I'm not opposed to haggis. I've tried it Hey, man. I'd love to gosh, man, can you imagine just being able to get that training for free? Exact out of like secondary like college or whatever, you know Good Lord. There's gota, I mean, it's It's got to be like some scholarships here, right? You have to sign something saying you're going to work for Scotland's public health serervice for X amount of time, right? Yeah. They're not just going to let you scoot in. And then learn cardiology Yeah. Gy You know, there's so much concept of incentive in at least that's what you hear in in a privatized world How are you going to incentivize folks to become the best doctor in their field and all that other stuff. and you do it through competition. so you got to get that grant or you got to get that scholarship, you got to get these things and be the best I do wonder how many more doctors you would have in that situation. Are there too many doctors in Scotland I would love it if there was a place that had too many doctors You know what I mean Like you got to get out of here guys Too many doctors, T many doctors get weirded out. This guy knows too much about my bones They're just crawling out of the the cracks, man. Yeah Somebody's tinder in Edinburgh like the one of their lines in their caption is no doctors. No more doctors swipe left So this letter, we're going to paraphrase some of it, but we are aware of the vast disparities in contrast here, even in Canada versus the United States. and Kate You point out some of the very troubling things about the NHS, which do apply to the Lety case You say the first major reason our NHS is in trouble is that we have an aging population and old people get sick more often. We also largely privatized our social care sector, which has been an absolute disaster and now we're trying to nationalize it again at an eye watering cost because now you have to persuade those private companies to lose money. So they want they're vigorish This impacts the NHS because when the older folks get stuck in hospital due to lack of community social care, the number of available hospital beds stay static So it's kind of for like comparison, it's kind of like if you go to a mall and you try to park your car on a Tuesday night, can be way easier than going on Saturday afternoon because everybody else is taking those parking spots Hi This is apparently guys, this is so prolific and frequent that now it has a street name Bed blocking They call it bed blogging, which is terrible because it makes old people sound like the villains I don't love it That's really bad It's kind of cold, right?? The next major reason says that is that we began privatizing parts of the NHS from the nineteen nineties. This is another big reason NHS is in trouble. You say one, we outsourced some aspects of the health service to private providers And now we're paying more money for worse service shadows of private equity. We talk about that in so many industries here in the states and then two Tony Blair ruled out something called Private finance Initiatives, PFIs. Tpe ofon incentives. Yeah. These PFIs use private capital to fund infrastructure And, you know, that includes hospitals
