I'ma Dobvin and This this is the big Picture Conversation showh about auctioning Chris Ryan sits between us. He! It's a big ball up here. No there's no auctioning that goes on here. Jack is Listen, the clock is back up. on the display. The cllock will be up. We've done one auction this year. G a hot lunch date back there Who cares about the clock? You want to hear Jack doing the doing the bidding call accepting the bids in real time? It would be fun. Well, okay, mayaybe we'll explore that for twenty twenty seven, but this is twenty twenty six. this is part two of our movie auction. And we're gonna to start selecting movies right after this This episode of the Big Picture is presented by Amazon Prime. One of the best things about streaming is that you never just pick a title, you pick a feeling. And Prime makes that easy. With great entertainment and fast shipping that brings the moment to life, Prime helps you experience the feeling you're craving Shs you can't wait for in deliveries you don't wait for, one click away from streaming to fast shipping on prime Okay. We're back. Now This relevant to what we're going to discuss here on this auction episode since we're at the halfwaymarket of the year. Butould anybody watch the wereerewolf trailer? I watched part of it And I knew we were going to talk about it, but it's a real it's important It's important to me to know when things are for me and when things are not for me and things are for you and meaningful to you. So delete your name from me right now on the schedule for december twenty fourth. But you know the PNCR R monk you me and Rob as I think so. Yeah Mster. I think topop five Werewolf movies done dealure, you know, like that episode writes itself the film Robert Eggers is adaptation of the Werewolf story The trailer looks shockingly similar to the Nosfratu trailer. Now, is that a good thing or a bad thing? because that movie is a big hit? veryery well reviewed Iterative And as someone who did actually both see Nasferatu and listen to your episode with Rob Mahoney, the villain of the Big Picture, three and a half Ye running. You guys walked out of it. admiring but not enthusiastic. was Yeah, there was a distance from Nosferratu. So to then remake a thing that you already felt at to remove from How are you feeling? Can I'll jp in and say not to paraphrase myself from that podcast, but we discussed whether or not Eggers was Wes Andersoning At least in terms of the perception of him as a filmmaker, that like he a to work in these little dioramas, but I would say, even in the marketing of his films pererhaps is now leaning into a If it ain't bro, don' Fix it kind of don't change it. Don't cure this raar man. Yeah. D don't let him be a demon. guys want D D dig into another classic monster? I did Yeah. I noted on a text chain, which Chris is a part of this morning that like it did feel to me like the witch, the lighthouse and the Northern was like a progression differentiffere kinds of movies similar register, but some funnier than others, some in different time periods, some with different emmotional construction Nosferatu felt a little more like the witch Werewolf looks a lot like Nosfratu. Yeah. You know, it's just the trailer We don't know, but Nospati was such a big hit that it does make sense to just try to run it back. Iron Taylor Johnson is back. He was one of the stars of Nosferatu Um, William Defe of course is' in it. he's in every movie that Eggers makes I' generally a big fan Eggers. He's been on the show like nine times, absolutely miserable every time he speaks to me And u I look forward to the film. Miserable because he doesn't want to be a part of the promotion process. No, becauseuse I'm just like Rob Tell me like in your heart, what are the thematic core elements of project My job here was to like recreate what is it fifteenth century English or whatever he's doing Yeah. Much like Wes Anderson where I think everybody is like, looks like another fucking Wes Anderson movie And then five years later I' like, actually This one had a lot of pathos. It's like I wonder if that will start to happen for Ereg's movies. I think that'sful. Yeahah, I think that's insightful. The movies are obviously incredibly well made and beautiful in the sound design and the score and the costumes. Production design, everything he does in that respect is top top shelf. He's doing his thing in like in his room with his toys and does it very well. as you said, noose Fraud who did extremely well at the box office. Yeah. So like if it's not broke Do not fix it. I get it. I just putut that on the poster. and I shall see it for professional reasons, but, you know, is if you sh', you sh't you know So yeah Channeling the werewolfves English there. Yeah. Okay. nice. Wh Did you have to do Beowwolf in oldld English old English. No, I don't Middle English. Sorry Middle English Oh my god, please don't the academics don't come for me. That's what you think is good insane response. U Okay, I bring that up because I'm curious if where' Wolf will get picked up in this in this movie auction today. We are you want to look at the slate, Do you want to address your your outstandingcern. Where is this episode com now July second Can I just say a triller that I did think rocked? Is a wait Ethan Haw. Yeah, Ethan Haw R alsosorow mov. Yeah, Yeah, sure. I have a link to that film right now. That looks like treasures is here Madre. It it was awesome. It was a Sundance film and got very niceviews out of Sundance. So you're saying you like the idea of an adventure movie starring Ethan Hawk. Yeah,. I mean, don't spoil what you may want to grab that one. You may want to acquire it. this brings up a really great point Sean, I think you did a wonderful job adding triggers And like, you know, a different layer of texture to this auction this year. But nothing I think you do. Isolate that. How would you describe the modulation and your tone of voice just there Deep respect for a fellow podcaster. And friend. Sure. Yeah. I I'll give him ac kidney right now if youell a podcast your first friends Do you change the texture of the films that I'm considering drafting because I have things I need I need. Yeah. I gott to do stuff. That is true. Do you have any general thoughts on the first half of the movie year how you both grabbed films because We didn't grab too many movies that have come out already which I find kind of fascinating. I was an idiot. I think I could Well, I think I could have chronologically broken the Europe up a lot more, but then I guess it's dependent on you two as well. Yeah. I have a lot to I still have all like I have three films that need to like perform basically in the second half the year. What do you think Well of my feelings or of the I did okay. And even the choices that I made that are sort of cringe worthy to myself and to myself, you know, identity are going to work out. For example, I got the Mandalorian and Grogu for nineteen dollars. Is anyone happy with what happened there? No, but did it meet the box office threshold? It did. So I'm good and now I can get a little frisky Yeah, there are upsides and downsides to that. If you've never listened to an auction episode before Welcome. This is an odd one to start with. I would encourage to go back to January, maybe and listen to the first one that we did. but We each attempt to acquire five titles And we have a thousand dollars to spend on those five titles, which is an arbitrary number that makes a lot of sense when you really think about it Uh That's for the first half and then the second half. I don't know if'veet I've yet to spend a thousand dollars correctly And the money does not roll over, or did we decide last time that it could roll over? The money does not roll over and that's no It sas for taxpayers. Okay, that's right. C Amanda spent one thousand dollars last January. I spent a thousand dollars, and Chris somehow has six hundred and seventy nine dollars remaining, which will now be dispersed to the masses of this confined country Um Happy birthdays I'll explain those triggers really quickly first. And those are new, just if people are did them last year, I think, as well. Yeah. twenty twenty five ish is they you on board. But if people are gonna start at the beginning of the auction history, things were a lot looser, a lot crazier. You Really, you soared so close to the sun. And it was this is a format close to my heart. Yeah, because it's all speculative. and it's all about betting on the future. I'm gambling again. R thirty seconds per bid, which we never abide by, but we'll try to do that today U movies that were previously auctioned off last year are once again eligible for future auctions. So if your movie if you grabbed a movie last year, you can grab it again this year if it hasn't yet taken. The category triggers are at least two films from the total slate of ten films across the whole year U gross one hundred million dollars domestically, att least one film must receive at least two Oscar nominations, and at least one of your films must hit an eighty five metacritic score Now that's very hard to do. only thirteen films released in twenty twenty Five did that Um No more than two sequels on your slate. And that is where taking something like the Manda Ln in Grogu is a very strategic choice with upsides and downsides. You're almost assured, one hundred million dollars domestically, but then a sequel is off the board for you. Yeah, you've only got one left. So let's go through our slates. Sure from January quickly I mean since you already teased one. why don't you go three years? So I have doing part three, which I paid seven hundred and seventy. seven hundred and seventy five dollars. sorry, I guess I forgot numbers for a minute there. That was my disclosure day happening. Product Hell Mary for two hundred dollars. Thank you. Thanks. It was, you know, that was laybreaking, but thank you. The social reckoning for one dollar. Wh whichich means that you guys were just like you left me hanging and that's fine. I deserve it. Verity five dollars and Mandalorian and Grogu for nineteen dollars. So so far, you've hit what what did you get any metacritic? None of us have metacric yet. So You do yours num wealll do through all the thresholds we've hit already. Okay. I picked Wuthering Heights for do seventy five dollars and also talked about My experienceces Romantically You did. How many Land acknowledgements have you given? Oh Is that what that was? Okay, I forgotten. Yeah Just count it down for us. I's go night by night I your journal Once I have done one somewhere, like Southern California is blessed. Oh know what I mean? Oh. So like you're going regionally. I'm looking forward I'm possibly going to Florida in September and I can't wait to commune with my seminole brothers, you know? like You've never spread your seed in that part of the land Think really carefy.' really good question. I think I actually have. Okay. Okay. Yeah. When was that? Florida I was young As a you kid, like six, seven, got here. sh You said young. I was younger. I'm fmost fifty. Oh. Okay. Are youorida yesterday y Yeah? What' for five minutes? No one's paying attention. A couple of hds yes C in Miami.'s Raleigh Hotel. It's a great time. All London was in the mix for five o Kanalian dance party is in the mix Where would that take place Los Angeles, I thought we were doing London. I'd like to go to London for my fiftieth. Yeah.. I'd like tos. I'm like, I'm trying to get sy to the point where he could fly. You. I thought maybe like you were like, Oh I just hit three. so. O I guess I could get a babysitter. Yeah. We could talk it out. I think Knox would like it so much though. you got him so much London stuff now. He knows all that he wants to go see big Ben, you know That's Amanda, invited You're the only person meet you. I got Wathering Ks Resident evvil I took for seventy two dollars. Devil Wars prodra two for twenty six dollars. The Adventures of Cliff Booth for seventy six dollars and Disclosure dayay for seventy two dollars I think you's six hundred and sev nine million. I think your slate is fascinating. Interesting. My slate is a bit more lopsided financially. I got the Odyssey for nine hundred and twenty six dollars be doing that strategy again, I'll just let you know right now. Toy Story for one dollar Narny, the magician's nephew for eighteen dollars which has now been punted to twenty twenty seven by Netflix. And I read the whole book for nothing You know? Yeah. read the whole book. Do you think you're going to forget everything by the time it comes out Uh Not ideal when you read it to a four year old and then you just gott to sit in your hands for a year and wait. And twenty twenty seven Award season, twenty twenty No it's like February March. I I'm gets get nervous. I'm good yeah. know it's it's that that was kind of buried because everyone was like, oh, wow. it's getting a full release and they're doing it. But yeah, it's it's like early April. that's alarm bells are going off. We can talk about this more over the next nine months, I guess. but Alice watched The Lion in the Witch in the wardrobe adaptation from the two thousands yesterday ennjoyed it, but it's weird and The Narnia material, having read it is very strange And obviously very Christian coded. February twelfth, twenty seven in theaters, april second on Netflix for Easter week and So you can celebrate. as a part of your holy week Yeah, well, we'll see where I'm at on my spiritual journey by then. I got Digger for five dollars. Yeah, interesting gamble And Jack of Sades for fifty dollars a movie that still does yet a release date. Jel It's the Joel Cohen film, which I suspect will be a fall film festival movie, but we just don't know about that. Now, you got Cliff Booth, which slid into Greta Gerwig the spot. Yeah it is opening on one thousand net IMAac screens, but I think only has a limited engagement. Are you surprised? there hass not been a single whisper about like, man, it's really good. Close booth. Yeah It's been lock and key I've not heard a single thing about it. a single thing Yeahah, I mean, I would like to see it. I would like to know more. It seems like it's not going to be at the Venice Film Festival, even though Netflix has ye. Whatakes you say that report Yeah, the most recent reports are that it was It's not on the list. And then but the Denzel Rubber Patensson. hereere comes the flood. Yes, here comes the flood will be one of the netfl. I'm excited about selections at Venice instead. But that movie is on board. That that's the movie I've been pointing to the most this year where I'm like, why is this movie going straight to Netflix? Five Is it five Patinson's this year I believe so be the drama Yeah I saying in part three Prime timee and here comes the flood s killer, quuite a year from the guy. So threshold check in SQel. I've got one whichich was tooy story five Amena's got two. So you're capped out. Yep. Chris has got two you're kepped out Now you took Dune partart three and the Mandalorian Grogu, both of which are going cross the one hundred million dollars threshold. Wise choices on your part If Dune Part three doesn't cost one hundred millionllars domestically, we' a big problem CR You've got Cliff Booth and DeilWorst Prd too Now Devor wasroud too, huge hit. Yeah G's going to be tough to get to one hundred. G be real tough. So disclosure Day It's currently at I believe, ninety four point eight million dollars domestic box office, and I would like to say this. Yeah I personally guarantee it's one hundred fif dollars If no one goes to see Disclosure Day for the rest of its theatrical run I will guarantee it. that will wipe me out. I am assuring you that will wipe me. total But I don't understand So are you going to go to a local AMC and donate five million dollars on behalf of Disclosure Day Is that something one can do? I don't know. I don't know. But like, did you know that Donald Trump could be president? L just try. And those are just similar acts, I would say, in terms of their lifetime consequence Stopping Dclosure Day is what I'm saying. So I am going and then be operating as if it has crossed the it's going to make six more million dollars, right I believe so. I think so. we didn't really get into where you are on the Alien podcast U on the because Van signed immediately I don't know that he's heard it because he hasn'ten the film. Oh, Oh, we haven't seen probably't listen. I should probably do that for the I was gonna say. so that's listen That's fifteen bucks Yeah.'re go We're getting there, Steve. Sean is considering rededicating his life to the study. No of alien interactions That isn't what was said. Okay. What was said was in the event that this was revealed to be true. Okay which is one of the orienting ideas of the movie. I said I would turn I would transform this show into a show about ali. big picture. Yes. And what did she want to do Well, I was I was surprised by that Yeah mean that's always answered. Do you think aliens like the beach Not explored in Steven Fpielberg's Dclosure Day. Memnight Chamal's alians do not like the water. Yeah, right. We know that. But that's that's a different, you know A race of aliens that we know. D they get in the water and war with the worlds sure ye Yeah, becausecause they're out on the boat. Oh yeah, they're out on the ferry. And then the ships come up from underneath the water.. It's a very upseting scene. traumatizing. You're you're avoiding disisclosure dayay. Why Um This is just fellt right in the middle of a tremendous amount of travel. and a tremendous amount of television for me And I feel really bad about it Especially like when I keep knocking out things like sheep detective, which is just sl you like that. You know what I found it quite pleasant to watch No Yeah It wasn't unpleasant. Yeah, those Rams, they were pretty funny. Yeah. I feel bad, but I haven't seen it. I will. Which RAM is more powerful? the RAM that Rams Jasper and Jack last or the Rams thousand percent team jackass in terms of the usage of Rams in cinema in twenty twenty six. Yeah. With respect to sheep detectives, which is quite nice. But I guess my. So wait, do you want to do your triggers or what you did or did you do the Mi Well, for the one hundred million dollars threshold, you pointed out that you've al got one and you're about to get a second. almost certainly D disclosure dayay will cross one hundred million doll.llars Given the way the winds are blowing, I think Resident evvil has a shot. It's absolutely possible. Amanda has already got two on her sleate because she also has project he Mary, which was a very smart pickup And I've got one right now, so I need to get one more choiceree five soaring right past. I just did the math and you would need to see disclosure day three hundred thousand and thirty three times in order to single handandedly get it over. Th hundred thousand and thirty three times three, three, three, three, three, three dot. If anybody back behind the glass would like to do the math on how much time that would take Mhm I would love to know How How many hours? Yeah I think it'd be long dead. Yeah. I guess before you could clock You haven't seen Disclos day once. You're gonna see it twenty five thousand times? Yeah I wish you luck Here's's the here's the sticky wicket. None of us have have unlocked the medical eighty five score. This is always the hardest thing to do However, I'm almost certainly going to get a one hundred million dollars threshold with the Odyssey, which means we'll all have that. You guys don't have a seQquel to play with what I saw of a sequel to play with, but that's actually fine because SQels very rarelyy five threshold anyway. So we have a lot of open terrain here. So I think what this could be is What are you pumped about? Wh you is that now that're you're basically like now we're in it for art Mhm. you know, and that's what this whole thing is anyway. Many people are saying. Has anything gotten to eighty five on Metacritic this year? Yes, but I don't know about any mainstream. Its like wide rel Harren get eighty five? I would guess it did I would guess it did. Let's look it up right now You guys can vampple, I look this. The other the other complicating thing here is that a number of the films that are M likely to make it to eighty five or above werere screen at the Cann film Festival. So me that they are ineligible for two of the three people on this draft. I'm going to talk through that as well. You're going need you're going you've got some shortcuts. That's right. You have to make good decisions. I'll give you a quick list of films that have already crossed it. And this is very helpful for you in terms of your bidding here Once upon timee in Harlem is a documentary premi here at Sundance that a man and I saw at Can Blue Herin, in fact has a ninety two right now You know, The next film of the ninety two is Ross Mclewee's remake I don't know if you're familiar with him. documarian who famously explores his own life. particular frameworks I watched this movie this weekend and it is absolutely devastating. So I just want to recommend when it comes out in July that people check out rememake. It's a beautiful. really, really sad movie Teenenage sex and death a Camp Myasm We've seen that, notnable to us Oh what but what is that's sitting at ninety one right now? Oh good. That's a little bit of a red herring because it's not wide release. And I do think that that number on that movie because that movie I think is gonna be a little more divisive and will come down a bit Fatherland. We saw it Can, Pavvel Publakkowski's new movie Silent Friend, which is a movie starring Tony Lunong that came out in April Sound of Falling, which was a Can twenty twenty five film, Magellan, which came out earlier this year. Pay Below the cllouds, Rland, Epic, the Elvis Presley movie, Blue film, which I've not yet seen My father's shhadow And coming in at number fifteen. The furious The furious sitting at eighty five, which I find to be fascinating Um eighty five is a little trickier for us because Amanda and I have seen so many movies that we know are going to be critically acclaimed for example, Fjord paper tiger. Sure. Yeah I've seen Joseph eating out of Sundance So those are all off the table for us in addition to the ones we just mentioned. How do you feel about How much attention do you pay to festival Chatter? Beause this is the first year really ever where I'm in and I get to be like, well, we saw the Can movies. That mean, it's bad for the auction. s probably good for me. and I do pay attention to it because I think it's I'm kind of fascinated by like what's in it for the movies at this point because it just feels like I don't know if those festivals necessarily are making an impact oututside of their bubble It does feel like if things go bad It starts a moveent, a snowball rolling downhill of Jokers' a turkey. is this is, you know. So it's it feels like to a man's point of out Booth's not going to be at Venice I don't know if it's going to be New York or whatever but like why bother? you know? likeike why not just be like, Yeahah, one battle after another and siners skipped festivalstogether And that certainly didn't hurt them in the Oscar race. Yeah I was thinking last night as a and this is a completely self serving proposal, but like maybe they should think about it. Someone should buy artificial and take it to Venice. Why Why? Because all they have on their side now is noise and this is not what you wanted to see. and like and they have movie stars and they have a big premiere and this like, o, I love this idea. I'm unfortunately a little cash poor down because I have a note against my headold You're down five point two million unfortunately, so you can't chip in on this Yeah Let's, let's try to unpack a little bit because you would like to see the film I would like to see the film on the Lito? Yes. Well, I'd like to see the film. I'm a fan of the work of Luca Guadanino and also free speech. And interesting will you be as Is passionate about Jonah Hill's cut off being released? Good point. Where is that film? Sure, I would like to see that also.. Just making sure, you know, both sides. How many of your pods are considered unreleased Jun Yang One onene episode. has never made it off off the computer. I was on that one too. Yeah We sh't speak of it again. Okay. That's a lore drop for you with no lore Okay, so you want to see it in Venice or you want to see it in general, Venice would be nice. I feel like it's a good launch pad. like La makes it, you know, it's a home base for him. I want to do something Italy. but let's just play it out Let's say for the sake of this conversation Yeah that the film is not strong and not received well critically. Right. And a distributor has paid thirty million dollars or fifty million dollars to take the movie off of Amazon's hands. and then the movie That was very poorly at the festival Is that right it's Chris's point. Is that dramatically worse for it? because that it really, I think it wounded after the hunt you getting a very poor reception in Venice. I do think that's true. though I think it also They knew ahead of time, like it was not in competition, which is them you just shouldn't be going. you shouldn't do it. So I guess if Venice is not willing to put it in competition, but I think it's a win for everybody. and I do also think unless the critics are going to be Critics will probably be softer to this movie, given the history and given the fact that it got pulled because of corporate reasons rather than any artistic reasons and would be willing to forgive at faults that maybe they were not willing to forgive in after the hunt. Also just for the record, you know, after the hunt, they just left us out in the rain for an hour in a thunderstorm, which once again, I would encourage people to not do that if you want a positive critical reception. These things do matter And also I liked what I saw in Venice. It was when I saw the end that I maxed out It just seems like they don't have a lot of good options and that could be a funny one. And I do think that making a spectacle and leaning into this was like canceled from you and taken from you is the only way to get it off the ground Okay, I agree. that's just my p. But you won't be contributing to the fund I'm just stretched in right now Understandable. Any other thoughts? I mean, you know, eighty five is going to be tough to hit, but you know you know that there are some titles out there that are critically There's some pretty obvious layups there. and I also still will be oxing from the heart There's a couple of that's beautiful. no one this sceneet that I am still a big believer in and also for the sake of the auction, would love to get them out in open competition. Okay I think it's safe to say that Amanda and I will already have the two two Oscar nominations locked up between the Odyssey and Project Hail Mary and probably Dune Par three as well I'm not sure if I can say the same yet for your sleep. Do you think that Emily Blunt will be nominated for Dclosure Day I think it's possible I would really like for it to happen I think the movie has a very mixed reception And the sheo is almost universally She does not have a mixed reception. Yeah. but it is a June movie. and You got to consider that universal will probably be putting most of its energies behind the Odyssey when it comes to this sort of thing. I would encourage them to I think people people really like Emily Blunt. It's very obvious that she is very liked within the industry. She's very liked. she has fans. She's made not very many good movies in the last ten years and it doesn't really matter. She's having a huge year because Dvware's Prada two is also massive I think it'd be wise to, but it's not a guarantee She she got nominated for smashing machine? This is or not I do think also They can sit tight for a while, get through the Odyssey. And that's just a very classic. put her back on the trail in October or November. People love to see her. It is a really good performance. you know, and it could also she could be in best actress and Odyssey is probably going to have only supporting nominations when you're thinking about it in terms of the way they're putting things together. So there's Elane. It's interesteresting I mean,' obviously I already have the movie on my sleep, but we're having this conversation before having seen the Odyssey and hopefully we'll see it soon. I think that dictates a lot of the thresholds and a lot of the expectations for the rest of the year. U I do not anticipate being an Oscar movie, I don't anticipate Resonident Evil getting the weapons ump It seems far more gory, but who knows makeakeup There there you go, bro Makeup is in play. Do they have an intimacy coordinator Oscar that for weathering heights. Do you think they did a good job I didn't see weatheringheads It just didn't ye Yeah, sorry My wife't choo like I don't think' like that much. I will see iting the end of the year. Yeah. It's at home. I HBM. I like going to the movie theater, it's not that What's in love with you guys, you know? Because we' adirected by woman is that the issue Don't No, no What if I zagged on weathering heights?, What if I went back to it and I found something in it that's for me? That would be great. We welcome you with open Ar. I we watch it. Okay. I don't Fenel. I'm trying toigure We know. I've heard it. I like I like that it exists. What does she doing ex? Yeah Sometome crazy, right Uh, yes. o my god, what is it I'm Re Fennell,' she doing? Transformers?. Honestly, I would like to see you deal with that. And I feel like they would have some pretty clothose. Yeah, I mean, autobots and Decepticons fucking, I would be really intrigued by that. Next movie, did you find it? There were rumors of a basic instinct re. But she shot them down. Okay. I'm totally sure. Okay. Okay Well, whatever she does, I'm sure it She has not received with an open mind Any thoughts before we get into the auction You ready to do it? Yeah. Yeahah. Do you have any procedural thoughts about how we've been doing these over the last four years. I honestly can't remember what because they do They've evolved and there are new kind of rules. And I didn't remember that we did the clock. in January. We tried. There was a lot of like oh, I'll bid one dollar so that I can keep prattling on Yeahah, but that's part of the fun, real These are always great to do when I haven't seen you over a weekend, so we haven't run through any of our stuff. Yeah. You know what I mean? No, I'm looking forward to that. I have said to you guys off mic, it was a weekend of extremes and I'm just I'm glad to be back with my bros. Let's mix it up. Okay How do we determine who goes first Here we go, shaking up the dungeons and Dragons die For the record, Chris Ryan would need to spend ninety two years to get that disclosure day, money. You know what? that is producing. Thank you guys. Well done Should then Maatfies What starts me down my wellness journey of prolonging well? Is your wellness journey going? What But like what are the focuses these days? This is this is my reuction. Yeah. Chris Ryan is selecting first Fantasy seconde, Amanda thir. Okay. Interesting. Do you want to think about what you're doing? or do you w want to tell me about your macros? I I'm trying to live as healthily, but also as happily as I can. It's important to have balance. So just kind of like a blue zone diet. I think what's hard about weightlifting is you have to be consistent with it. and I've been traveling a lot Okay. And so being consistent with my My lifting has been difficult. You don't go to the hotel gym? Well, I w want to come to the hotel gym with me in Toronto. Oh God. In some ways, I think that that would give me an incredible insight into who you are. We could do one of the videos together. That was the time when I was most scared because there was the most violent stuff happening, the most fighting. And that was the thingback. And I felt that watching the movie, I was seeing this movie is really chaotic Tenth and not kid friendly evenven though it's marketed directly at kids. And we talked about it a little bit on our epe. I was very nervous when we saw the early footage because I was like my four year old knows about this movie and this seems like really You know just way too many blasters and or guns and, you know, yucky And He was just so you know, smooth brained about the experience that it turned out to be okay. I don't think he remembers anything of it, which is depressing in its own way. Yeah. But yeah, I found it pretty gnarly. I did ask him what his favorite Star Wars film was and he said Mandalorian. Yeah. It's really funny. It fell a little bit victim to the moment I also was there were like seven psychopaths I'd be too. So I've heard that this movie is more like Seven psychopaths than it is like Banshees, that it is a little bit more of a hyper violent absurdist comedy than it is a sort of mournful treatise on relationships and friendships,ge or They're moving the cursor around the clock in a way that suggests to me that they want you to know. You guys have microphones? Yeah. have You want me to speak up. I have this phone. So here's here's great procedural. Yeah, Chris has it. And to like a specific generation of AI. five million dollars in the whole. Yeah that's turning. And obviously I think the technology of like computers helping us and like computers doing math for us and whatever else they're doing with it is going to continue. But I do sort of feel I do feel that Big AI is in like kind of a bubble phase right now and they aren't figuring everything out. And if you're stuck And some that if like if it's pets dot com, but it didn't really matter to like Matt Damon with crypto dot com, right D'tick That straight didn't stick him, but it does, Where is whereere's your girl Larson? It's hard for me to imagine making a hundred million dollars, but I've been wrong before. I agree. It's a little bit of a risk venture, eighty five dollars I just love the idea of this movie existing. The episode that I want to do around this movie is Twilight Zone movies. I love Twilight sone premises in movies. where super high concept, extravagant, more than likely metaphorical allegorical ideas. Maybe this isn't an allegory movie, but I suspect it is because it's from David Robert Mitell who made it Follows, who made u under the Silver Lake. He works L frames. ninety five Um, You and McGregor Would you say you like him as a leading man now I'd putting him on this spot. I'll say one hundred and five dollars I'm stoked this moie I hope it's good one hundred and twenty Any a mov Gotta get some movies. This also raises point I made on the blank check Jurassic Park episode, which is if you go back and you look at the history of movies, especially movies since Jurassic Park There are very few dinosaur movies. I'm very curious to see if the dinosaurs in this film are drastically different than the Jassic world rebirth Like where are we at with how shared is that dra is that dinosaur tech I was watching Alice watched asked to watch the Jurassic Park trarailer I to watch it. and I was just marveling just watching this trailer and so magic. This is thirty two years ag thirty three years ago. Yeah, one thirty And it's still that combination of CGI and the practical, you know the models that they built good, but they've not really iterated on it that much in our dinosaur movies canan you name ten dinosaur movies off top of your head made since nineteen ninety? No That's because you guys don't remember any of the Jurassic movies besides dress. Thats what was aside. Name fine. set asidees to the Jurastic movies. question about Jurassic. No. No d No one spontaneously combusted the movie. No one dies in the traic part of the problem with that. Yeah. You guys love it. There's aershally do battle with like a dinosaur all the land, Air and sea, you know? Yeah, he survives. He survives at the end Real like should have killed chewy vibes in that way. like we got to bring them all back to the sequel What will the sequel of that movie happen One seventy five. Yeah, it will with Gar Jo Vversa. I don't Scar Jo's doing forty five other franchises So lookingoo. Yeah What's next on the docket for? Well,s Ary Astor, Batman and exxorcist. Oh man, that's fucking awesome. She I'm sorry to say, she's the chosen one. Who are why are you sorry to her about? Becauseuse she's mix mixed on sccar. I admire her And I like some of her films and sometimes I'm like, is this acting? It would be great if she was still's like one woman it was all print and adandage about Elizabeth Tlor. That's true.er autor photo was just like And it was like skeptical with a C about Scarjo. and it's just like One lady's opinion is like, Are we sure she's good? You let me have this one Yeah. No two hundred. shoot. We's had it Um she's good. I think sometimes she's not used the way I You know, we would. Ary Astor Batman, paper Tiger. Paper Tiger and exxorcist. And that's yeah. I saw that's the balance And that the balance we're looking for. That is still from Exorcist today and I was James Grantam. Ari Aster superhero movie And what's the other one that don'm forget Exorcist. I hope that ex. What's the suuper She plays Gilda Dent. Well, we don't know. Wh is Gilda Den? Harvey Dent's wife. She does some bad stuff or some okay. mixed stuff. The thing you don't know is that this movie is not called The Batman I. It's called Gilda Den. And it's a character piece about what happened If it's a remake of Gilda,'s g starring Scarjo, that I would be interest. Is she not named after the titular Gilda from the film Gilda Gilda? I watched that in a hotel room with my wife and we both felt like we were going back in time Like we were like this is the fucking crazy longest movie we've ever seen. I like Rachel Zegler a lot. I don't know why she was asked to perform Luminier' songs for three hours. a really. I also, despite the title being the ballot of songbirds and Snakes was not prepared for the level of performance. Not a songbirding. Yeah. This one does look cool. Yeah. 's what I'm putting putting up Do it Wh was I gonna put up whalefall? Good That's when dollars I Yeah there we go she said. Yeah, we can't do better. It's one hundred and fifty. It's entirely possible that this movie is honestly unintelligible, that it is so dark that the whale's stomach is not supporting I think that you what are you gonna do if when he goes into the whale's stomach? Yeah, it's all flashbacks of his trauma. I' upset I will feel betrayed. one hundred seventy five. Be I do feel like I've put in a lot of work. Okay a little bit of footage. No, what we didn't see We have not seen drafted. Nobody's Yeah sa the footage. No, but it's not it's not based I'm trying to figure out, like what children's book Or what illustration of like the book of Donah or wherever the Jonahas around?. Well, I know, but there's but it's a very, very specific image where It's a large, it's in brown inside the whale. And there's there nothing in Pinocchio? A small window? No, and then there's like a little stool And then Jonah is in there this movie? No, that's what my head. Okay. If I were storyboarding it, it's just like thirty you know, a play set and it's like a little stool and it's all brown and then he's just hanging around. But I don't actually know what happens inside the whale. Many compartments. When is this in a whale your stomach? September Oct Oober n, It's October. What are we going to do when we're here with tears in our eyes talking about how whale fall is propelling Hollywood tos new hood We're going to be like we told you that. We told people there's a movie where a guy gets swallowed by a whale and the people said yes and the people said. I know you don't want to relive this too much, but The image of Larry David, we're at thirty seconds thirty five, The image of Larry David in game four of the NBA finals when Josh misses the lay I'm done reloading this. I'm not No no, it's a negative moment. It's a negative moment. Josh Hard misses the layup on the breakaway in the fourth quarter and there's a wide shot of Larry David in the front row and he starts to fall down and he does the full he's looking for someone to brace him while he's falling forty That was me when the whale fall footage hit at Cinemacon. I was just like, I didn't know how much I needed this. Yeah. So I was during an otherwise fairly grim present Disney presentation. Yes And it was before they brought Aan Jfield who was making two hundred fifty. He made Whalefaw is now writing the alien sequel. Ver encouraging. Ver encouraging. Ridley meddling. That's what they say. Ridley's meddling with the script. Ridley's meddling with the franchise is the word on the street. Is that out the street on Romulus as well And then so Fetty left and then it was going to be evvil dead burn guy was gonna to make it. I was thinking about maybe trying to grab it here. But that I just I don't really know what I'm going to do with myself in October I'm going to stay strong. I'm gonna you know Ke seeing the sun, keep doing my exercises, mindfulness, try to keep my eye on the ball. Mindfulness is something you practice on. I would find that hard to believe I learned a little bit about mindfulness. I learn what mindfulness was. I learn a lot about it. And then I was like, that seems unnecessary. I'm just gonna put everything in a box over here. You know, mindfulness is about silence Yeah which is obviously not achievement. Is it my turn Is I one Yes it is and I have, what you'm gonna to call it And now we're starting to get into the like, well I hate to do it to you guys, but You got to grab one of. I'm gonna go for paper Tiger. because it's a personal. It represents me personally as a cooast guy a crime film and loves James Gray and loves Miles Teller and loves Adam Dryver, lovescarlet Johansson U and I'll bid five dollars for that out of herself to paper Tiger. but why not just bid one hundred? Why not bid one? You guys can't bid on it, right That's true. F dollars is actually more insulting than one dollar. dollar, somebody looks at the board and they're like, oh he ran out of money, but there was one movie left on the board. five dollars. It iss like no one else bid on it I don't know. I would encourage people I would say bid five hundred. No. I'm gonna bid five dollars and we can talk about paper Tiger though. Yeah Well it's just a terrific movie. I loved it. We were there at the premiere Scarlet, Johs was not, but they faceetimed her during the of. Yeah. But I mean, listen, time zones are very comp say One of the very best Adam Driver performances of all time, and also the most Miles Teller has tried hard to be good in a film in about a decade. Like since when, when's the last time you think you did that U Sctacular now. I, that's my favorite seller performance Whiplash is spectacular now that's an amazing. That was when I was like Oh, is this guy like John Voy or something? andbe it's not that ultimately. John Void This is like a really sensitive but masculine presence on screen, you know Not John Vooyid now. not John Vooyid advising President Trump on how to save. try to rehure Hollywood production? No, John Void from Midnight Cowboy and As Carer's accent. Are you allowed to say that without breaking No, it it's perfectly accurate. It is exxactly I from there sound like Sure. It sounds like my grandmother. I think I would like to have it voice my AI agent. I't can. I don't think you'd enjoy that Yeah My AI can someone who is raised with those voices Very closely And you know what what I get excited by You told us Brie Larson. No, I didn't mean that. I just didn't know what she was talking about. Yeah, five bucks. I love James Gray. It's gonna likely hit eighty five, I mean, it's currently at eighty five, right? Who knows Who knows? It was very well reviewed by the French The European critics loved it The U.S. critics thought it was his best in some time I would say the US pundits that we knew that we talked to at the festival But it did not win any prizes it can, right So I don't know what that. And the French newspapers were very upset about. They were. Le Mon said a masterpiece. What did keep saying Did't catch with that one. I also don't read French. Lake K is the Sports magazine. Yeah. We know They said goal. What is the French word for goal? U, is it? I think so It's pretty universal. Really I mean, there might be a French word for goal, but I think when they score they're like goal. Okay. Well congratulations. Son. Damn son, you scored a goal So I get paper tigers. Yeah I can never tell like, is this podcast supposed go on for like six hours or we Yeah As you told me many moons ago, it's all one podcast. So now I have Wild Horse nine and I have Paper Tiger And I have Wellfall. 's That's your ideal epode length For this as a host or as listening to a podcast? Well, let's do both. Good question Do you find that something magical happens at the two hour mark? C too. You know either are focused you know, one to one, fifteen, mayaybe like a focus one plus then you have a good interview.. Uh and and or two hours and things can get like really frisky. I will say this is how we've been able to do it together for so long. Yeah I agree with you. But every once in a while, there are exceptions where It's Where if you and I just like have an hour and a half, but like no real structure or nothing that we have to get done, then we can get to the two hour energy at about an hour and that's also beautiful. But that's where I'm trying to go. I wonder if that's gonna to get easier or harder as I get older You mean the the loopiness or the conjuring that energy because you, you know You used to say like five years ago, you'd be like, you guys like to go long. You know I'm more used to different rhythms. I mean, I'm more of a fifty five minute Yeah we know hour in five minute guy. then what happens at one hour in five minutes? Well, usually I have to come do another podcast. Oh schedulle. excuse that Yeah very I like to be support of very probablyably after to this, what show you have to go do Uh Rogan? I know I have to prepare for the beautiful pod. Oh There are many matches today. There are three four maybe. I four Um, I have to Nominate another film. please do And I don't like doing this, but I do need to shore up my Oscar campaign. Okay. And so I will be nominating Fjord. Oh, wow She. Okay. two in row they're ineligible for Amanda and I. I'm sorry It's okay. But I wasn't really sure if I had like great confidence like this Oscars is yet to coalesce for me to the extent that I pay attention. I would say too and I looked at I looked at you paying A dollar to wow to mirror Sean's Shots fired at Christian Munju. the great Romanian filmmaker. This movie I'm really curious to see what happens with this because I think it's going to hit here and people are going to be like masterpiece couldould be wrong It was mixed at Ken. It did win the palm and the jury loved it But it was very mixed. It was and there was pushes towards other films Minotora Bola Negra that people preferred to this movie because it is in keeping with the kind of movie that he makes. But I loved it And you liked it you liked a I really I think I think they will get an Oscar nomination. They absolutely about they'll get to, I think in at least for the performances and then best picture I think so This is a movie about him a couple, a Norwegian woman and a Romanian man who were living in Romania and moveoved to Norway, to get a better life for their families, A Christian family who encounter some unusual progressive structures in place in Norway around their family, and it becomes a real cultural clash, literally a cultural clash. And Sebastian Stan and Ronota Rinzva are both amazing in the movie. is it's going to be a bit of a political time, though. It's going to reveal, I think a lot of about how people feel about this kind of thing. when it is released, I guess I don't want to say more than that. I'm very curious for your take as a thoughtful consumer of political content. And maker onene of the makers of JMO's true It's a true JMO movie You I I think in similar ways that we were talking about Scarjo doing the right, I think shhout out to Sebastian Stan, who seems to gotten the same memo and is like I did all the Marvel movies and those two people probably will be ahead of the curve as I wonder whether or not less and less Hollywood actors are interested in going through what Millie Alcock just went through And they're just like, is it really worth it? to If this doesn't go right, I get blamed and if it goes Well Like I'm locked into this for nine years. Elegant segway for my next nomination, which is Spiderm Man Brand new day. Okay. put on the board for five bucks I don't know if you guys care about this. I don't know if it makes sense even in the auction in the aftermath of the Supergirl thing and the way that We talked about it and that I wrote about it and all that. It doesn't change the fact that I still remain very in Spidererman. Do you think this will make more money than Odysy and Dune In all likelihood, it should. I mean, based on what the subject matter is and how it's performed before. And Spider Man is not really subject to the whims of Morbius and suupergirl. Spider Man has always been successful. fifteen bucks Wait, what's on the board? F Fireman, Brandy Day? What do you need? What do you need? I'm sorry, I want. I was focusing on what I need and like, you know, kind of trying to plot myself Lity. But you start talking about Spider Man, which I like. I had a great time at the one where they point at each other, you know? No way home. Sure. that was beautiful. and new director. Okay. Dustin Daniel Creton coming in John Watts out J Krisky's writing doing a pass on the screenplay. Tom Tam tellelling Zach Barron that you learned a lot from the Odyssey and that's what he brought that energy to Brandy D. Yeah, of course. mee too. But I'm one of those people who's like, you're not seeing W Anderson now. It was Anderson. No, I wasn't an insult. W Anderson is more excited to talk to on podcasts though. So that is one thing. He was lovely to talk to on podast. T you. He was to you. He was a great guest. and he'd been somebody I'd always wanted to talk to Rob Bankers is a really nice guy. It's not about that. It's more just he's like C clearly annoying Do you think it would be insane if in this auction we started opening it up to like multiple years and we were like drafting like the next Corsese movie and shit Oh J 't like a twenty. I was reading about how this movie is gonna feature early modern English, so I wasn't listening. So what did you say about Spes? Like what if we started bidding on things that were also twenty seven, like opening up the drafting? Well, Okaykay, Oh is what happens at night be this come out this year It's been A production It's june thirtieth And they say that it's a it's like smaller in scope, right? And who's putting that out? App Apple over thirty seconds. A five. Apple has two other films coming out. They have a San What's her face, Koda Seun Vader being human I was just ready Okay, great. May is coming out with Ryan Reynolds You know what we didn't do And maybe we can revisit it when Amanda goes on vacation. is into the gray You know, I haven't seen. I think it's not that bad That's a great place to start. We're at thirty seconds.. ninety five. What What's a what is it is there a garbage nomenclature that we could What if we did in the gray? Gate Late Richie Garbage Richie? What if we just did late Richie? I feel like we've done that probably like five times. I'll do it again.. always do it with you. If I need to revisit Gay Rich's the coovenant, I will revisit it. It wasasn't there another one that came out this year that we didn't. there was an Alen Richson movie that came out last year. There's one coming out later this year, I think called Wife and Dog A hundred bucks. Okay wife and dog. Yeah is u That's the name of your modern literary podcast. Bife in book one hundred five This is not a guy Richie movie How much money does Sean have left five hundred eighty more than you. And how much money do I have left I believe five hundred seventy four This is a normal way to spend it I just, you know what it is? I just I thought I would get more out of drafting things that you guys had seen and being like, nah Yeah It really doesn't it doesn't hit like it doesn't hit the same. No it's not ye, it's not as fun two hundred dollars. Oh, okay. I'm going to think about that for a minute Where what are you saving your money for I don't know I have a movie that's gonna get it to eighty five. Oh, and you don't think wereerewolf will, you think that everyone will appreciate the technical achievements. But this is the problem. is he seen too many things? Yeah. is the problem? Mhm What do you think Nosferatu's better a critic score is seventy two you thinkink U seventy four. I think it's probably right around there. seventy eight. Yeah We're think thirty seconds I think you can take it So we need just one movie with Metacritic overE five. Okay. And I gott to figure out what that is Now is the odyssey getting over eighty five? That's the thing we don't Yeah. I think so I don't know I want to throw this out there chance for a backlash with the Odysse I'm not saying it's not going to do well, I'm not saying it's not to be good But there's a chance for a backlash. They tried already. No that was like that was like a anti woke thing. Oh you just think people are going to see it and be like, nah. Try again There's just so much hype. Snooze. Now, obviously Oppenheimer defeated that fascinatingly. That was a historical drama Yeah that he drove to nine hundred eighty million dollars or whatever. That was amazing that that happened. And this is not me wearing my like Molan hatater hat. I'm actually just kind of curious I was just like this a week after six six Six out of ten It's like an interesting test for you of like, I know you want to be right, but you also want to, you know No, it's's it's more like If I'm considering can it get to eighty five. He's also now will be like critically as acclaim. But it's also At this point in the year we're always like there are five that we're sure of and five we have no idea. And so that's That seems like some decent guessing. Some of those will, some of those won't. This is a fascinating podcast. Do you think Does he have a pick now? Do I have what's happening? I have a pick becausecause Chris doesn't need to take another Yeah Yeahah yeah So but my question is do I take the debut as my bid for a chance at A five. which is likely to be an mov anybody you' seen it Do you know any word on it? I know you guys don't care about stop motion animation, but the trailer is just breathtaking. I it's going be a great. I think it has a chance to be great film. Okay. I know you don't care. Well, do you think that people will hold Masters of Universe and other things against Travis Knight? I don't think so. I don't think people even know whoo Travis Knight is ally Don't you think the critics though though who are registered on metacritic now I'm just trying to honey bear. I'm not gonna get in the mix with you on this. have more money than me. they have a Br Larson for. You're talking about you're trying to decide between wildwood and I think thanks And the debut. I can't believe I'm in the position of defending animation critics being like, that's rude. No know, of course, they know who Travis Nnight is because he you know, what led the Haaika for a long time in his directed animated features for sure I don't know. There's got to be another movie out there, like Clarissa whichich was it. Yeah, but we didn't see it is a movie I'm curious about You mentioned tasing. I think that you should pick the debut. I'm Team Eisenberg. Yeah I think I'm also Tam Eisenberg. Jesse. Yeah. I want to see him continue to make films. this Out of respect to Jesse Eisenberg, I'll pay one hundred dollars for the debut. Okay And then you just leave the other four hundred and eighty on the table out of respect for Jussie Isisenberg also. That's right. Okay. may we may need to eventually address the thousand dollars. Be it took a bunch of stuff off the table that I look forward to. I catch up a lot of theann movies historically movies tell you right. So now I'm not going to have to watch those movies which makes conquering tell you write easier, but it makes the year a little bit less like like the seecret agent was one of my favorite movies of last year. And I had to wait many months after that movie premiered at a festival to see it and then I saw it and then I was able to watch again I like that and maybe there'll be a ton of great stuff at the fall film festivals this year. I do think that there's a couple things that are kind of make or breaky on the year. likeike Digger a lot is riding on that movie and if it's not, if we don't love it Or all, even if only one of us likes it Yeah it makes it a little less fun to talk. I think if Cliff Booth was coming out in theaters that would make it feel a little bit different, there's something strangely not anticlimactic, but I think it's like It'll just feel like it's gone in a weekend, no matter what it is. Yeah, it's two weeks, but I know what you mean. Oh it's two weeks. And is it going wide or is it just in select? It is in a thousand MAac screens. Okay.
