Hey, I'm Amara, host of Black Girl G on I True Crime podcast. Over four years and more than two hundred episodes, I've been telling the stories of missing and murdderered bllack women and girls, stories that are too often ignored. These are real lives, real families, and real cases that deserve the spotlight If you're looking for true crime with heart, purpose and a mission for justice This is it Listen to Black Girro Gon on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcast. Their stories matter and I won't stop telling them. Hello every, welcome back to another episode of the Casual Crimalist. Today we're talking about the Yoseemite, or if you're Mr. Donald Trump, sorry President Donald Trump, the Yemes where they gaze upon itich was one of my favourite gaffs since what did Bush say about G to war against Bh Yo seite A the Yosemite Yosemite sorry Park killer twwisted Family termil turns murderers. Alright then. Let's jump into it, shall we? Thank you Matt for writing today's script. and yeah, the forat of the show, if you're new herear. I've never read this before and I'm gonna read it And we're gonna to react to it together to your audience. A the forest, for many it could be a calming place a place one could go for hiking and camping, someomewhere that you go to clear your head and just take in the sights, the sounds, the smells of nature A the smells of nature The feces of animals. No I love nature. I love being out of the forest. I live in the city and I find it so calming just to G out and be in nature and you're just like, air tastes better You're probably not getting all sorts of horrible city diseases. Personally, I miss the days where my family and I took a long drive up to Maine to meet with my aunt and would rent out a lakeside cabin for the week. obviously not me, I don't have an aunt who lives in Maine This is Matt, who wrote this obviously. The tranquil calm of it all, the presence of nature all around surrounded by tall trees and the vast lake, it was nice. For some though, the forest can be a place of unease and worry. Who's worried in the forest? I mean, unless you're lost in the forest, unless you're by the forest, you're in the forest by yourself at night and there are wolves Then you should be worried about the forest. I saw a bear the other day. No she I was on a big trip, an overlanding trip, sort of doing a bit of off roading in Romania with a mate of mine And we were driving up the mountain to this big famous road, which I'm not going to try and pronounce. They featured it on top gear and wanted to drive along it and we did We're driving up, there's all these signs say don't feed the bears and We're driving up and then a car ahead of us is just kind of slowing down a little bit they put the hazards on. and it's like, well, what you doing? there's what are you doing? Wh are you stopping here? Like come on And then I look to my left and there is a goddamn brown bear I'd never seen a bear before in my life I mean outside of the zoo, and there's just a bear. Just standing there, maybe like five foot tall Just like chilling out And I'm like, holy shit, there's a bear right there rightate? And he's like, no Oh yeah Fun story Simon, let'sry on. You never know what or who could be lurking around every bush and tree. That brings us to nineteen ninety nine, the turning points of the Millennium, to Yosemite National Park in California Inern. I had no idea Y sevententy National Park was in California. For some reason I thought he was up in the north somewhere. For seven months, a fiend was loose in the woods of this beautiful and expansive biome, one who wanted his deeds to make headlines, and in the end, four women would end up paying the price. So, Simon, and dear audience, as the darkness encroaches us again, let us venture into the woods together and tell the tale of this heinous man. One who is as selfish as he is demented. This is the tale of the Yosemite Park Killer Blood in the woods Let's set the scene for the misery to come. Yosemite National Park was established one hundred and thirty five years ago on october first, eighteen ninety before being designated a World Heritage site in nineteen eighty four. With a radius of one thousand one hundred eighty seven square miles or three thousand seventy square kilometers, it spreads through four different counties of California, most of it centered T alume. T alumn bl bl, bl, bl bl. They' I always like Son, how do you not how pronounce too ' alumn.? I'm like, this A county in California that I'd ever heard of. It'd be like asking you to pronounce like, I don't know shet I mean, look at the spelling of that and tell me it's pronounced to Berkshire, not Berkshire. It's Berkshire should be Berkshire Okay whyy do' you look it up? Can't be bothered. A Mariposa, well spreading north and east to Mono and then Madeera in the south It's a place called Mono. Isn't there a disease called Mono? And to say that it's popular with visitors and tourists is an understatement. With a plethora of natural sights, like the massive forests of sequoia trees, large mountains, and beautif or granite cliffs, to its rushing waterfalls, lovely streams and large lakes, it's a gorgeous location, one that millions of people come to see every. I'm beginning to think that matter has been paid by the California Tourism Department. Whether it be for camping, hiking, or even skiing down the huge snow covered glaciers pristine vacation location vacation location I like that. And undoubtedly, that's what forty two year old Carol Evans soned and her daughter, fifteen year old Juliana, Julie sonned, had in mind. february fifteenth, nineteen ninety nine. The loving mother and daughter had arrived in Yosemite along with a friend and Argentine exchange student, sixteen year old Sylvia Polasso, to hike, ski and create great memories together. The friendship between the families actually went back decades as Carol and sol the S Sillvina's mum had been friends for thirty years back when Carol herself was an exchange student down in Argentina They kept in touch ever since and their daughters practically grew up together. The three of them had gone to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California Okay, so I'm assuming at some point they moveved to America. Because otherwise growing up together would be rather different becausecause Argentina is at the wrong end of that continent Not the wrong end, the other end, I should say. I mean, the wrong end for someone living in California. not. sounds vague racist, doesn't it? Yeah, yeah, the wrong half of the continent of America, the one you should be scared of. they should because there's statistically more crime down there, exxcept for in mybilly's country where he's put all the criminals in prison along with loads of innocent people Holy shit El Salvador The three of them had gone to the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where Juli hadted competed sorry, in a cheerleading competition Finishing that, the three of them headed to the park, excited for good times in the forest, surrounded by nature. They hiked, they skied, they took pictures. It was a perfect time And as the sun dipped lower in the sky and the evening started to creep in, the three ladies made their way to Cedar Lodge Motel, settling in for the night. They were set to meet Carol's husband and Julie's father, Jen Sund the next morning at the San Francisco airport, so renting out a few movies from the front desk, they all wanted to simply relax and unwind, pleased with how the day went happy at all the great memories they made. ye, remember when hotels you could go to they'd have like DVD's or videos that you could borrow I don't anymore I don't think I even turn on the TV in hotel rooms I go to. I say I was on that trip in Romania with my may I say in a bunch of like random hotels and a bit of camping. I don't think I turned on a single TV in any of those hotel rooms because I'll just go to bed and watch something on my tablet or my laptop. or my phone then came a knock at the cabin door And everything went to hell The next day, february sixteenth, nineteen ninety nine came along, and Jenens arrived at the airport, patiently anticipating meeting up with Carol and the girls And so we waited. and waited. and waited. And yet they never came. They never made it back home. Now scared, Jens called the police and an investigation was quickly underway. At first they thought maybe the ladies had accidentally driven off the road and off one of the many steep cliffsides in the park. It was winter after all, and it had been snowing, so it isn't exactly the most outlandish idea. And as days turned into weeks And the search expanded more and more, the accident idea started to fade quicker, and the idea that someone had taken and likely murdered the free women started to gain traction, especially when Carol's wallllet was found miles away in Medesto. No idea why, but I have heard of Medesto, California It's probably been featured in previous episode or something. but like, I haven't heard of all the other places. I mean, other than Yoseemite of course made famous by the big man. It had been turned in by a good Samaritan, and with it came even further raised suspicions. Carol's parents came to aid in the search, peeering on the news and asking for any information anyone might have that might aid in bringing their daughter and granddaughter home Slvina's parents even flew in from Argentina. Wait they grew up together her daughts grew up together but they live in Argentina, so they're very confusing. I probably missed something, did I? in order to help however they could. Unfortunately, it was all for nothing. On march the eighteenth, nineteen ninety nine, an abandoned car was found within Yosemite A pontiac, rented out to Carrolsund, and upon investigation, the charred remains of two women were discovered within the car, burned so badly that they were utterly unrecognizable Once the authorities cross referenced the dental records though, any hope anyone had evaporated. It was Carol and Sylina. Both women had been shot on february fifteenth, the same day that they'd arrived at the cabin with ligature marks on Carol's neck suggesting she'd also been strangled with a rope, but the biggest difference was that Sylvina had been sexually violated But what about Julie? They searched the surrounding area, but there were no signs of the missing fifteen year old. Perhaps, there was still a chance just a sliver of hope that she could somehow be alive. And if not, they at least wanted to find her body so that she could be brought home to her father and grandparents. Jesus Christ It was a week later that the authorities received a fresh clue, one delivered right to them A crudely ded old map with a single location marked and within a note, one carrying a single sentence We had fun with this one. Though the map was hand drawn and poorly done at that, the markings were enough for the police to reach the objective. And sadly, with it died any hope Julie's family had of returning her home safely. Miles away, from where her mother and friend had been found near Lake Pedro in Tolomnei County, Julie's body was recovered. She had been killed on the sixteenth the day after the others Her throat had been slashed, but not before she too had been sexually violated, by whoever this man was. Three innocent women were dead, and the cops officially had a serial killer on the loose. Isn't this a spree killer? Isn't someone who kills like within a short term like that called a spree killer? rather than like cereal, but I'm not sure As nature watches Unfortunately, the cops here do what most cops do on this show and show just how incompetent they can be in the worst of times. You see, the authorities did take this seriously, at least on the surface. They did interviews of all the employees at the Cedar Lodge Motel, trying to weed out anyone they deemed suspicious. After all was concluded, They cleared every employee, letting them know that they'd all been relieved of suspicion Apparently, these officers had no real sense of threat of any kind when the killer was sitting across from them, looking them dead in the face. Oh wow, so we one hundred percent know we already know it was someone who worked at the lodge or the motel, that's kind of wild. I'm getting an eerie reminder here of the case of the Yorkshire ripper Peter Sutcliffe, who was interviewed an unbelievable nine times by the police before he was captured And so, days turned into weeks and weeks swiftly became months. and still, there was no real movement in catching the killer. In fact, after going over what little evidence they had and without any clear momentum in the case, the proper authorities came up with quite the excellent idea that they'd actually caught their man and that he was already in custody. This was of course, bullshit, and they wouldn't even Pice any name or information on the person they suspected might have been caught by them by accident, but they were confident enough to announce this theory to the media Why? So whether to get the press and the grieving angry families of the victim off their backs, they said what they'd wished was true and they let things ride from there Job well done There's not a job well done and then another body was found. This was twenty six year old Joey Ruth Armstrong, a naturalist, under the employment of the Yosemite Institute Passionate and driven, her loved ones would describe her as someone who gave all for the causes that she believed in, particularly nature and the environment. She loved plants and animals, she recycled every day and made sure her friends and family did the same, and she adored being in the great outdoors, surrounded by trees and fresh air. That summer, she spent much of her time at Yosemite National Park Shed even climbed to the summit of Mount Shastter part wayay up the notorious walls of El Capitan. Well, that's pretty that's an impressive climb I don't know what Parway up means, M maybe she just like, you know scrambled up a little bit at the bottom. You guys seen that Free s soo film with Alex Holl That's crazy. That's a crazy movie And really good, so check it out, That's all I've got to say. For reference, the peak elevation of Mount Chastter is a staggering fourteen thousand one hundred and seventy nine feet, and the cliffside of El Capatan goes up to three thousand feet. That's pretty tall That mountain I drove up in Roman, f feel like my recent trip to Romania has having a lot of anecdotes this episode. Just wait till I talk about my adventures with Andrew Tate while there. It's a bit of a twat Commendable, relatable, and with a clear driving sense for adventure, it sounds like Joey was a real peach, to say the least, which makes what happened all the more sad During that summer, Joey had been living in the park itself in the Foresta region, renting a remote cabin in a meadowed area with views of the Yosemite Valley and the Sierra Nevada. I feel like I know how these places look because they've been the the backgrounds of Apple computers for ages, right with their releases, they name them after this sort of stuff G know a fun fact, Windows XP had the codename Windows Whistler which I always found quite fun. It was which is my surname just in case you don't know and I think it was named after Whistler in in Columbia in British Columbia, in Canada, right? A lovely place, one that many would say could be considered paradise until it wasn't. You see, Joe' meant to meet a friend in the Bay Area, and her truck was all packed for the trip. But when her friend arrived, and Joe' nowhere to be found, she started getting worried and so she phoned the park to report her missing. Upon sending someone to check the cabin, it didn't take long to find Joe or what was left of her The body was found outside the cabin in the grass, bound and missing her head. What the f And like Julian and Syilvina before her, she too had been sexually assaulted before she was killed hate it As with the location of a missing head it was found discarded in a stream nearby, as if the killer had taken it as a trophy or to use for his own disgusting means later only to change his mind and throw it away Now with egg firmly on their face police had a problem. Yeah, you rubbish policeman, allegedly. They had shouted from the rooftops that the people were safe to traverse the trails of Yosemite again, that the killer was already likely behind bars, that everything was going to be A o. So when another victim was found, and it was determined to be the same killer, they doubled their efforts, including going over every detail from the first three killings in conjunction with the fourth Youd think when three people are dead, they'd make more of an effort wouldouldn't you But alas, as is so often the case, the police everybody. As soon as the investigation was once more well underway though, the cops caught a break When it came to Joe, there were witnesses, and while they didn't see either Joe or the killer, they did catch sight of something rather important, a vehicle, namely a blue nineteen seventy two international scout. and it was parked right outside Joy's cabin during the time frame in which her death fell Wouldn't you know it? There was an employee of the motel that just happened to own and drive that exact make and model of Khan Oh, what really Just like that they had a suspect. He was a handy man at the motel, designated with fixing any and all kinds of issues that arose for the guests, and as stated earlier, they had questioned him the very first time around in regard to the previous three murders, but since he had a clean record, no criminal activity to speak of they dismissed him. They matched thear track to his car, they detained and questioned him, confiscated his backpack, but let him go for the time being, warning him not to leave town What he's a He's being questioned for a quQuadruple murder Sorry a triple murder at the time. Why they let him go while he was their prime suspect I'll never know, especially when they found what could only be described as a murder kit in his backpack Please What are you up to What did is keep him in jail? What the fuck They went to arrest him, only to find that he'd left his lodgings. It didn't take long to find him though, only an extra day, and he was located and arrested in the Laguna D Sol Nudest Resort in Wilton, California by FBI agents John Bowles and Jeff Rinick. He was transported back to Sacramento for further interrogation, but in a surprising twist, he outright confessed, though not before, he made time for a visitor while on a break in questioning The I had got the man and that man's name was Carry Stainer. You got to leave the country You got to get to Lebanon ASAP Botherly envy So, Simon You and our lovely audience have probably had something nagging in the back of your mind since this episode started Matt, I hear you saying. Why does the title of this episode talk about family turmoil? Well, let's get into obviously Matt had completely forgotten about the title of the episode, but let's get into it, shall we? Well, let's get into one of the most interesting aspects of this whole story, and frankly, it doesn't even directly involve this deranged douche bag Carry Anthony Stayer was born, the first of five children on august thirteenth, nineteen sixty one to Delbert Foy and Kay Stayer in Mercid, California. He had three younger sisters, but he also had a younger brother, Stephen Gregory Stayer, with whom he shared a room Right off the bat, things weren't exactly peachy for young Care, and things only got worse as he got older First off, when the lad was only three years old, he was diagnosed with, oh my Tle till trrickillaania can tell like, we is that the hair? Yeah compulsive hair bulling I've heard that for some reason. Ever since the boy could walk, he was forcefully pulling out his own hair in clumps, getting so bad that he needed to be put on medication to make him stop That didn't help much for the already existing bald spots though, and as we know, kids could be nasty little shits. He was bullied relentlessly. It also got to the point in high school that he had to wear a baseball cap at all times to hide the notable patches. But even without the hair pulling and the bullying, there was clearly something wrong with Carrie's head. Ever since he was young, seven years old, in fact, he had fantasized about kidnapping and killing women. bro since you were seven You got get you gotta get to a psychiatrist ASAP, my dude, holyit. The very thought of it excited him greatly, a symptom of the evil to come, and something we've encountered quite a bit on this channel in the past It's like, you need that that what's the what's Dexter's dad's name? like you've got to You've got to What's it called? You got you got to use your inner passeng Dark passenger. You gott to use your dark passenger for good Dxter You got to kill the bad guys Great show that was Dext was a cr does that hold up? I feel like I really enjoyed that when it was coming out, but then recently I've tried watching some older shows that I really enjoyed back in the day And I've just been a bit disappointed with how cheheesy Dext is not that old, right? Was Dxtter a before breaking bat Probably right And those dark thoughts and wishes probably only intensified into adolescence, especially when Stoneer claimed that when he was eleven, his uncle Jesse sexually abused him. More on that later But I hear you're all wondering, why did I give particular attention to his brother Stephven earlier I don't know about our dear audience now who are listening, but I'm like, noope completely glossed over me. He had three sisters, one brother who he shared a room with and he pulled out his hair. but I did not think about why you mentioned the brother other than the fact that you mentioned the sisters as well, but okay simple Because arguably, that boy could have an entire episode of this show dedicated to him alone and what he went through. That's because at only seven years old Stephven Stayer was taken from his home Punged right into hell. It was december fourth, nineteen seventy two and Stehen was walking home from school on Yosemite Park Way It was then that he was approached by a man named Irvin Edward Murphy, an employee of the Yosemite Lodge. Going up to Stephen, the man claimed to be a representative of the local church seeking any kind of donations. He asked Stephen if his mother might have some old items that she might be willing to part with, and when Stephen said yes, Murphy asked where he lived and if he could give him a lift. Stephen agreed, and just then a white Bureet pulled up, whisking them both away. You see, Murphy was just a simple minded man, very trusting and naive When he was at all being used by an even worse monster I don't think he's a monster then he's just like a bit dim, isn't he They're simple minded s being manipulated by someone he's actually bad. Although let's see, maybe he's piece ofit as. well let's find out. A monster by the name of Kenneth Parnell. And upon being given over to Parnell, Stephven didn't make it home for seven long years For those seven years, he was nothing more than Parnell's playth used to satisfy his pervert sexual wants Parnell already had a history of kidnapping and molesting young boys, having previously raped a child in nineteen fifty one using a spake sheriff's badge to lure the child into his clutches His reasoning, his wife at the time was pregnant, and he needed another out there for his sexual wants wish I was joking. what the actual He ended up getting caught, and what do you think his sentence was for the young boy impersonating a police officer Ten years, fifteen You'd sadly be giving the courts too much credit in this case as Parnell was given him easily four years for the offence. He raped a fuck Kids stuff. So when he saw there's that the guy from Lost Profits whoom I refuseed to cover on this channel because his crimes are truly unspeakable. But like that guy was sent to prison as he deserves. And then he got stabbed to death a couple of months ago by inmates. and I'm like, Hey, finally, how did it take so long I hope his stay in prison was like pretty f horrible before that as well. I bet it was because that guy was a fuck and I'm glad he's dead and I hope it was slow. So when he saw Stephen out and about, he thought he was perfect. Ponneell also worked at the Yosemite Lodge as a night auditor, so he knew Irvin Murphy and knew how dope and trusting he was. And so he manipulated the man, convincing him that along with being a night auditor, he was also an aspiring pastor and wanted to raise the boy properly in a religious household Yes, because pastors just go around scooping up random kids off the street to teach them the good worord and the ways of the Lord. I mean, obviously not, but he wasat described him as simple minded, so it's not his fault, he's just not right. He told Stephen that his parents had given him up and that they didn't love him anymore and just couldn't afford to take care of him. He forced the boy to act as his son, said a judge had given him legal custody of him, changed his name to Dennis Gregory Parnell, and even had the boy enrolled in school too scared to speak up about what was happening to him. Damn He did all he could to brainwash Stepven, making him believe that there was no escape, that his life was his now, and he should just accept it. Oh, did I mention the Panll had a girlfriend at the time Wait, no, you mentioned Oh sorry, this was later. hisis wife was pregnant, now he has a girlfriend Christ. He was b in marriages by then, and he was shacking up with a woman named Barbara Mathias, who was more than happy to let him indulge in his sick needs, even aiding him in doing so stuff is happening People are just fuck demons, dude And to think, they hadn't even left the state, living in the nearby Maraposo in Mendatino counties, only a short drive away from the Stainer home. In fact, Parnell's cabin in the park was only a few hundred fereet from Stehen's grandpa's house. They were rather nonchalant about the whole thing. Meanwhile, Stehven's parents and siblings were worried sick, working with the police and doing all they could to try and find Stehven. Care seemed to be taking it heart. but after a time That worry for his brother would shift Tright jealousy and loathing. Oh no, is he jealous of the attention that his brother's getting because he's been fucked npped by a P worord R wordist Bro, that is not the right reaction, but he is a kid at this point, right? How old is he? You see, Gary grew to hate the grief laden attention his parents were giving to Stephen, who wasn't even here anymore. To him that attention should be focused more on him mate, and they should get over it and move on. G get over there missing led. Jesus All of this was undoubtedly compounded by the fact that his father, Delbert often blamed him for Stephven's disappearance, saying how he should have been looking out for him how Steve was the one who he truly loved and helped pressure Carrie to watch over his sister so they wouldn't share the same fate. But Steven ended up coming back. Whoa You see in those seven years, Stephen started going through puberty as all children do, and by the time he'd reached fourteen years old, Puners started losing interest in him. Stepen had gotten too old for Parneell's particular tastes, so Parneell decided it would be a good idea to try and use Stephen to learn Nuth play things in for him. This didn't go well for a while, as Stephven actively did all he could to dissuade any child from having anything to do with Parneel consonsidering that he's been brainwashing you as a kid for the last seven years between the ages of seven and fourteen It's remarkable that good for you, mate. That was until february fourteenth, nineteen eighty. That day, Parnell had recruited Randall Sean Pormman A friend of Stehven's from school, and together they kidnapped a five year old Timothy White in Yukia, California. Young Timothy was obviously terrified with the whole situation, and seeing this it motivated Stehven Seven years of pain, seeven years of lies and manipulations Enough was enough, it was clear, more than ever, that nothing Parnell ever told him was true, and he would do all he could to not only help this boy but also go home himself Time came on march first, nineteen eighty While Ponnell was away at work, Stephen collected Timothy, and the boys made a break for it into the night Hitchi into to Yukyia with no idea how to get to Timothy's house, they instead went to a nearby police station Please tell me that this guy gets the death penalty I mean, he hasn't killed anyone. God or life without parole at the very least probablyper stab you off in prison as you deserve As soon as they were safe, Stephen told the police everything, recounting every last detail that he could remember about his previous life My name is Stephven Stainer. I'm fourteen And I don't know my true birth date, but I use april eighteenth, nineteen sixty five. I know my first name is Stephen. I'm pretty sure my last name is Stayainer, and if I have a middle name I don't know it. By the very next morning, Kenneth Parnell was in handcuffs, arrested for rape and kidnapping, and both boys were returned to their families The stainers were obviously, oh, by the way, just in the statement he misspelled his surname with an I instead of a Y The stainers were overjrooyed to have their son a brother back. carry anyway. If anything, his feelings of jealousy and inferiority to his now returned brother only intensified. Stephen was treated as a hero, the boy who escaped his kidnapper and saved a young child while doing it made a two part miniseries about his story in nineteen eighty nine, titled I knownow My first nameame is Stephven The show received four Ey nominations. Wow, godamn. To quote frames crrinologist Dr. Elizabeth Yardley, he's not known for being Care. He's known for being the brother of the boy who went missing That's not going to have a good impact on you. That is going to really devastate your own sense of identity. Here's a man who is spiraling out of control. He's going towards something, but we don't know quite what that is yet It wasn't uil sunshine and rainbows after Stephen came back home though No, he's going to be traumatized the shit out of. So much time had passed, it changed so much, and it took a while for both he and his family to adjust to being together again I returned almost to grown man. And yet my parents saw me as their seven year old After they stopped trying to teach me the fundamentals all over again, it got better Why doesn't my dad hug me anym Everything has changed Sometimes I blame myself. I don't know, sometimes if I should have come home Would I have been better off if I didn't end quote Stephen did land on his feet though, and in nineteen eighty five, he married seventeen year old Jodie Edmundson. The two were happy together, and they even had kids a daughter and a son. He worked at a pizza shop, joined a local church, and was even working with children abduction groups, giving interviews and giving talks to kids about his experiences and how to be safe Good for you Things were looking up But it wouldn't last long. On september sixteenth, nineteen eighty nine, age twenty four, Stephven Stainer was involved in a fatal hit and run accident, suffering severe head trawa on his way home from work on its motorcycle He passed away that day barely ten years after his escape from Pardell. And over five hundred people attended his funeral with Timothy White At time, fourteen years old, acting as a pwbearer for the man who'd saved him you'd think you already had a lifetime of bad luck. I don't know, it's not how things work, but It's still really sad Anyway At school, Carry was considered intelligent, and he had a talent for cartoons, his art appearing regularly in the school newspaper. He graduated from Merard Highchool and started working as a window installer at a glass company. However, he clearly despised his job, as he started having fantasies about killing everyone working there by driving his truck through the building and lighting it on fire His unstable mind was only growing more unstable Then something curious happens. Remember I said earlier that Carry claimed to have been molested by his uncle Jessse Well, it was on december twenty sixth, nineteen ninety the forty two year old Jessie Stayin was found dead inside his home The man had been shot and by his own shotgun no less. murder remains unsolved to this day, but when you think about it and look at the facts of it, it seems rather clear Carriry had allegedly been hurt terribly by his uncle, and this was around the time that Stephen was taken. And on top of that, Care was actually living with Jessie at the time of the murder. Yeah. I want to be like, o no. Oh uncle Jessse died. in fact, that's fine. Or was it just alleged against Uncle Jessse? Maybe there was no definitive evidence to charge him, but Care was at the top of the suspect list and remains so to this day sometimes a spade is just a spade and sometimes it's clear as day that he shot that man allegedly Regardless, everver the attention seeker Carerey attempted to off himself in nineteen ninety one by way of carbon monoxide guilt over killing his uncle, guilt over his deplorable envious feelings over his now deceased brother. It remains unclear, but whatever the reason Sadly, he failed, being placed in a psych hospital in nineteen ninety five after suffering a nervous breakdown Eventually, he was released to his own devices, and by nineteen ninety seven, he found himself employed as a handyman the Cedar Lodge Motel in Elportal, California, receiving a room right above the diner are you know it? The motel just happened to be located just outside the Highway one hundred and forty entrance Yosemite National Park Do yes becoming a well recognized and well liked face around the place. Coworkers liked him, customers liked him, and he seemed rather good at his job, whether it be fixing electrical issues throughout the motel or to basic cleaning duties. When he wasn't working. He'd be out hiking in the woods, smoking marijuana, and sunbathing in nothing but his birthday suit. Well that is of course when he wasn't trying to hunt down Bigfoot Yes, you heard that right, Carry Stainner not only believed the Big Foot exists, but that he was determined to track it down and prove it. The Oddities never seemed to case in this case. But the darkness wasn't through with Carry. I'm surprised he's so likable, people is this just a mask? Because he seems like someone who likes the idea of murder is possibly a murderer and fantasises about burning his previous place of employment down It had planted the seed within him long ago, and nurtured by his own evil thoughts his petty jealousy of his brother and the subsequent need for attention He eventually acted on them Over those handful of months in nineteen ninety nine, four innocent women. were lost by his hands O more brutal. Lost While he had always had fantasies about killing and hurting women, perhaps seeing Carol and the girls what appeared to be a loving family dynamic, something he simply never had in his life It sent him over the edge at last I mean Very much speculation, but possibly And the rest, as they say, is history. Tension gone wrong So who was that visitor that Carry had asked to see before talking to the FBI? Well, that was local news reporter Ted Rowlands. Conducted in a visitation room via Bone Behind Glass, Carry told his story, his version of the truth, in a full twenty five minute interview He wanted his spin on events out in the public and he wanted it to be well documented that while he did kill those women, he wanted the sexual assault to be left out, as if he found it distasteful and didn't want to be remembered as the sexual miscreant that he was bro, you're going like. He also wanted certain conditions met in regard to his story, as Rowllands later recalled, The interview was conducted in a room. We were separated by glass and used telephones. He picked up the phone, and the first thing he said to me was, I want you to contact Hollywood producers, and I would like a movie of the week made about my story. And I thought, Movie of the Week This is the same thing that his brother Stehven made about his story It immediately struck me as well, okay, this guy's thinking about his brother. He immediately went asking for the movie of the Week, to a full confession end quote Yeah, this is pretty weird. Like he's just, is this really just because he wants attention because he's jealous of the attention his brother got? I mean, he's also like definitely fucked up in the head. but Chr The reporter continues, quoting again From the moment he walked in, he was rigid, very clinical, the way he spoke. his voice didn't goble down. There was little to no emotion even when he talked about them. mean I was Detached He admitted to the murders, but he glossed over the details. in fact, he lied. He lied about some other the story to me. He told me that he never physically abused or tortured any of his victims I think he lied to me because he wanted to take credit for the murders, but he was embarrassed about the torture and the sexual assault, and he didn't want the public to know about So after this, he was brought into the interrogation room again by the FBI sat down by agents Rinak and Bowles and Care sang like a canary. He told them about how much he wanted to be given the things his brother had gotten. He wanted all the media coverage. He wanted books written about him. He wanted movies and TV shows made on his bloody exploits. O I hate now I kind of hate the fact that we're making an episode about him because this is what he would have wanted Brak He confessed to killing all four women, and if there was any doubt about his guilt, he proceeded to go into great detail about each one. The night that Carol, Julie and Slvvena all arrived at their cabin We're ready for a nice relaxing evening Then a knock came at the door And when they opened it, they were met with Carrie Stayer. He introduced himself as the handyman of the motel, saying he was stopping by to fix a leak in the bathroom They didn't think anything of it, letting him in, leading him to the sink As soon as their guard was down When they began to settle in again, he pounced. Gun drawn, he proceeded to lock Sylvinia and Julie in the bathroom, and then strangled Carool unconscious before assaulting the two teenagers. after he had satisfied himself in the ation of these two defenseless girls, he shot both Carol and Sylvvena dead and stuff them into their rented reed Pontiac Grand Prix He then returned to Julia and began assaulting her all over again before driving with her to Lake Don Pedro. There he picked her up out of the car, brideor style took her to a hillside overlooking the lake, sat her down, and M her watch the sunrise with him It was as if she was his blushing bride and this was the day of their honeymoon Once the sun peakksed over the horizon He slit her throat and left her there to bleed out. He called a cab to drive him back to the lodge as if nothing had happened. On the way back to the lodge, Carry began making conversation with the cab driver, and to quote, British crime author and investigative journalist, Jeffrey Wansell, When the cab driver later gave a statement to the police, he said something rather curious He says the FMac c driver Do you believe in big fotes? on the way back to the motel. She says, No, and he says Wh you should And in my view, that's an indication, a firm indication that Bigfoot Dark side of Care Stayer I mean again very, very speculative and feels very crime author rather than the journalist in O Jeffrey coming out there. but interesting point. After that it was like nothing had happened. Carry simply went back to work, fulfilling his usual daily duties at the motel. He made sure to clean the room, made sure no stone was unturned, so that no one would know he was there But, just to be on the safe side, a few days after the murder, he returned to the Pontiac, removed some things from the car, doused it with gasoline and set it ablaze Then to confuse the authorities even more he took Carol's wallet, drove it to Modesto, and left it there for anyone to find someone did. It was then that upon it being turned into the police, they instantly felt something was wrong The case was changing from simply a missing persons case one of suspected homicide When it came to Joe, it was simply rinse and repeat. He was trusted, he was liked, he was familiar So when the well respected handyman arrived at her door, saying he was there for basic repairs, She let him in without hesitation once she was comfortable Once more he grabbed her, overpowered her. He then started preparing for her transport much like he had with Julie duct taping her mouth and binding her hands. However, unlike Julie, Joe managed to fight him off and started running for her life. Sadly, she didn't get very far as Carrie quickly caught up to her, and in a rage slashed her throat so deeply and violently that he ended up decapitating her He then simply dumped both parts of her outside, thinking nearby animals would take care of the rest When talking about the case and particularly the attack on Joey, pathologist Stuart Hamilton had this to say, quoting, We have an escalation of what he's doing He's abducted her. he's bound her. He's gagged her. Behead, sir, att least we can say it would be a very rapid death at the end, and a very brave young woman to try and escape from such horrible circumstances While talking to the FBI agents, namely Jeff Rinick, Stainer was calm and collected, as if remorse was the furthest thing from his mind quoting So weird Jeff, I love life so much. I can breathe, I can wake up and see the sun. I like my friends I could tell you why this happened One minute I'm thinking great thoughts and world peace and the next minute is like I could kill every person on the face of the earth Once the news of the arrest of Stainer was released employers and fellow employees at the motel were mortified They were quick to release a statement, wishing all the best the famil is affected by his actions, quoting We treat our guests as we would our own families and any harm to them Distresses us The management and employees extend their healf hell sympathy to the families of the victims in these cases. With all of this in their hands, the authorities charged Care Stayer with premeditated first degree murder, felony first degree murder, kidnapping resulting in death and attempted aggravated sexual abuse against Joey Armstrong He was taken to trial in November of two thousand two, but in order to avoid the death penalty, Care, then thirty nine, pled guilty to all counts, being sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Shame In the aftermath of his sentencing, Carry surprisingly broke down in tears before the court. And I suppose we should say crocodilears as he never showed any shred of remorse before that That clearly was a play for sympathy for those in attendance. Wait, why he's just been sentenced. So I think he's more crying because He might be a psychope, but he still like even people who murdder people can still he's not sad about what he did. He's sad about the fact that he's never going leave a prison cell. quoting him I wish I could take it back, but I can't. I wish I could tell you why I did such a thing, but I don't even know myself. I'm so sorry. I wish there was a reason, but there isn't. It's senseless. His time in the courtroom wasn't over though, as he also had to face additional murder charges in regard to Carol, Julie and Sylvina He was back before the judge and jury in two thousand two, and perhaps he felt more confident at his chances this time as he pled not guilty by reason of insanity, taking these charges to trial. His whole defense was that his childhood was fraught with tragedy from his brother's kidnapping to his uncle sexually assaulting him around the same time I mean look Fine, you had a shitty upbringing. But there's a lot of people who have shitty upbringings who don't go on to do a caduple murder. okay Never an excuse This would of course, disregard his dark and harmful thoughts before any of that even took place, though it's safe to say that these factors exacerbated what was already growing within. To quote Fred Berlin, an associate professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who specializes in sexual offenders, quote, There's no doubt Carrie Stayer had a troubled childhood. But it wasn't just the thing about his brother M children who were sexually abused are damaged in their sexual development. Thankfully it was all for naught. The judge a jury bought none of it, and he was found to be completely sane. On the twenty seventh of august two thousand two, Care Stone at the Yosemite Parklular was found guilty of three counts of first degree murder, with special circumstances as one count of kidnapping As for his sentence Ohh It brings me great joy to say he was unable to avoid it any longer, and this pathetic beast was thankfully sentenced to death Oh Brilliant Wait, so he cut a deal the first time. He didn't want to cut a deal the second time. broke because you're already in prison for life What youre doing Why what are you doing? but Hey Sadly, this waste of space is still stealing oxygen from the rest of us on death row currently sixty four, with no end definitively in sight, given how there hasn't been an execution in California since two thousand six, shame Hopefully, they'll eventually get that turned around because there's plenty of monsters awaiting their last judgment And that ass hat is certainly at the front of the line And just like that, our storyies at an end. We' had a fill of selfish killers here on this channel over the years, but frankly, I think this one ranks right near the top. You will notice that I took every chance I reasonably could to tear down this pathetic excuse of a man, and frankly, I don't even think that's enough Jealousy over his brother starred him over seven years of hell and misery, the nerve to think their parents loved him less simply because they were grateful to have their other son back. Did he have dark thoughts and twisted fantasies? Yes And on this show, Those are a dime a dozen We've also seen people who go through terrible things think awful thoughts, but they don't act on any of them. They don't become horrible murdering monsters Carry Stayner ironically lives up to his last name, a stain on the canvas of humanity acting only on his own envious whims and evil desires. And to do that for women. Die None of them, deserving even a second of the pain the suffering that they endured at his hands. And the worst part The last one didn't need to. Had the cops actually done their jobs properly? Yeah don't forget about that Had they not rested on their laurels and stuck to the idea that the culprit was already behind bars, they might have found him sooner, but instead, they got cocky, they got lazy, complacent. And because of that, another woman lost her life in brutal fashion. I'm sure there's also one burning question as we near the end today What became of Kenneth Parnell U I guess they m if I rememberered C Parnell was Was he the guy? wasas he the predator He was, right? Well, for what he did to Stephen and Timothy, he was tried for the kidnapping. But not the sexual abuse. Broke, he has sexually abused him for seven years I have no idea why the justice system seems to be just broken The good news is that he was found guilty. The bad news is that it was only for seven years And he ended up serving just five That's right, they couldn't even keep this putrid chip bag in jail for the same length of time that he had held Stehen Steiner hostage That is insane America. That is The same As for his accomplices, both willing and otherwise, they had varying sentences as well, with Murphy manipulated R Norswa getting a five year sentence, paroled after two Barbara, who aided him every chance she got, not even being charged ough Who got paid off allegedly probably don't believe someone got paid off but this is insane. But even with such a lenient sentence and a chance at freedom, he still couldn't help himself. In january two thousand three, seventy one year old Kenneth Parnell was arrested again, this time for trying to coerce his caregiver's sister, Diane Stevens into Buying him a four year old boy for five hundred dollars One of his demands for the boy. God No, no, no. I'm just not going to talk about that. That's just Rim U Anyway, he I'm just skipping the bit that I don't want to read because it's just fuck Gross But at this point he was already nearing the end of his life, needing round the clock care and suffering from diabetes and emphena . O february ninth, two thousand four, he was found guilty on all charges of attempting to purchase a child and attempted child molestation Another California's three strike Rleallyy was sentenced to twenty five years to life in prison He wouldn't last long though dying on january twenty first two thousand eight, aged seventy six a piece of sheet W that as we close out the case today I asked that we remember the victims, women who simply wanted to spend time in the park, on all the way from South America to be with her friend, all taken from this world far too soon by an evil man who cared for nothing beside his own fame and fulfillment Carol sons, Juliana sons, Sylvina Pelosso Joy Armstrong May they all rest in peace. and as a special bit of remembrance for Stephven Stayer, the brutality fear and violation he went through only to end up as a piece of motive for his twisted brother He deserves to be remembered better than brother. gets forgotten, even more so once they eventually, hopefully, stick the needle in his arm Dismemember dependencies To leave us all on a lighter note, I have some good news to share.
