Hello everyone and welcome to the filmcast, a podcast about movies I'm David Chen and eventually we will be seeing Supergirl use her superpowers in this movie called Supergirl, perhaps, I hope oin me today is Dndra H hardware We at the studio want an antihero with attitude. He's edgy. He's in your face You've heard the expression, let's get busy Well, this is an ant her that gets busy Ando joining us today is also Jeff Kanada. Oh, today, I'm just joining you today. I'm Jeff Kanada and today I learned that the girl from Epanema is an intergalactic hit. They listen to it everywhere Those are vague oblique references to the fact that today at the podcast, we're going to be reviewing Craig Gillespie's new movie, Supergirl The second entry in James Gunn's DC universe Is it any good We will find out. You can find more episodes of the show at the filmcastot comot email us at slashfilmcast at Gmail d. comot Of course, we got some what we've been watching, some film news for you before we get to our review U But before we do that, I do want to mention like a couple of items of film news, right? Like before we get to like the rest of the show. Well number one is If you're watching the box office, I don't think guys saw a supergirl bombed disastrously at the box office this weekend. It made around thirty eight million dollars in its opening weekend. It's going that's worse Then the fllash, that's worse than the Marvels movies that everyone thought were huge bombs It's worse than wait wait, wait you mean the superhero IP led by a woman has has basically tanked because of I don't know, weird online press about this too and weird online commentary. I don't actually I don't actually believe that that is the reason the movie's not doing well, but there's a lot of there was a lot of like I agree that the press is like the online not just the press horrible Yeah has been awful and terrible and misogynistic, but U I think there are other broader forces at play here as to why this movie is doing badly. That said, not enough loobo. It's doing worse than this movie opened worse than Morbius. Uh, and that is not good. That's not only that But Appear is like it's going to struggle to reach a hundred million dollars, which means it might not even make it into the top ten for the summer this year Uh, which means Yet another mark against our subper moovment waagers guys. I mean, I don't know how we can take anymore of these hits personally. And by the way, I ranked supergirl o no, no, BJ ranked suupergirl highest at number five. I ranked suupergirl at number six Again, it's look like it might not even make it. We're all under the green sun over here, which is apparently a thing. Yeah Yeah But it's not looking good for. This might be the most disastrous thing wager all time. I was texting with Peter and he was saying, maybe this is the year that we do like literally the worst we've ever done. right? Yeah. I think that's Ver likely. rightight out the gate. There's already multiple things we chose that are probably not going to be the top ten like Mortal comomat two. Supergirl, probablyably not gonna be the top ten. All of us had those in the top ten. Sitting at number two right now is a movie no one had on their list No one N do weons right now. Weapons should have taught us something. Yeah. The thing, you know what's so weird is like every year we say it We say like Yeah. Oh hey, make sure you account for the weapons effect Make sure you choose a small horror ind the horror film, you know, like And then but then we don't actually follow the advice Hindsight is so we say that every hour Hindsight nips you in the ass, you know? Yeah. But yeah, number two and number four on the list right now, no one had Who knows that's other Who knows what other movies of the summer will Naked on there. Maybe that, you know, that new David Robert Mitchell movie, right? Sure. I do you know what we should do next year? I do a um Very, very legal, very on the up and up NFL football. ting thing that I do every year that's just for fun.sust a bunch of guys. I think it's legal now, Jeff. it's okay. Yeah. but I've been doing it for I don't know, since nineteen ninety something with the same group of guys. Um we pick every game every week against the spread And then whoever got the most games right wins money. But the guy who runs it you know, lists everybody's running tally score and there's a you know, the person who got the most right over the entire season also gets a big prize and you get that your name on a trophy and stuff thing he does all year long is lists everybody's running score alongside something he calls Coin. which is literally him just flipping a coin to see. And so it's like literally like if you're doing worse than pure chance. Yes, like feel embarrassed about yourself, right? Yes. We could do the same thing. We could literally just throw darts at a board and see if the dart board version of the Summer moovie Wager does better than we do. Yeah Yeah I mean I have to say my only hope of possibly even not coming in last this year is if Spider Man Brand new Day does really, really well because which it hs like it will. Yeah. I hope so. because Toy Story five has made about three hundred million dollars so far domestically And it's probably heading for like five to six hundred million dollars by the end of its run, rightight? And so ye Yeah, Spider Man Brand new D make more than five or six hundred million dollars Which it very well may, but man, this is Well, supposedly I was reading that it broke a record for pres sales. Yeah, so That's encouraging for you. You're not de. you're telling me there's a chance me. You and Diner both want that to happen Absolutely, absolutely U acccording to Deadline, the movie has the best pres sales in five years Yeah so that is Spider RM brand new day is doing. And hopefully it will continue to do well. but I look. I want to talk to you guys a little bit about the implications of this for DC Universe like James Guns DC Univer, but I was thinking we could say that for the afternark Regardless, just wanted people to know that Um, Supergirl And also all of our summer movie wagers doing super well this weekend, sadly, not doing super well Uh, All right, yeah Another piece of film news. that I think is worth discussing. And this is this is a really special one, okay Here's the headline for variety. com. Freddie the thirteenth Animated movie setet at Paramount with Predator Badlands director Dan Trachenberg Hey, I know him Hey. According to the story, Preditator Badl's director Dan Trackberg is developing Freddy the thirteenth, animated movie based on the indie comic about the fictional Freddie Van Winkle hapless thirteenth born son who seems to fail at everything he does. Though Freddie XIteIh sounds scary The studio promises a wholesome PG rated movie that will deliver laughs to the whole family Okay story follows a family vacation that turns into a nightmare after fun Uncle Freddy accidentally kills the boogeyman and takes on his powers and c The post then quotes Dan Trachtenberg's Instagram post announcing this saying, I've spent most of my career making movies that parents probably shouldn't show their kids happay to announce, along with suuper Mercoto comics and Paramount Pictures, I'm finally making one that they can Question mark That's what Dad trracked proposed to go this story now If you are a longtim film cast host such as myself You might have thought to yourself, wait a second, I recognize that name. Yahouti Mercadto. I feel like I've seen that name in emails to slash filmcast atgeail. com or to like like patron lists and so on and so forth. And it turns out Yahoti Mercado The creator of Friday the thirteenth. the indie comic is not only a listener of the filmcast for many, many years He has been a money horse patron day one w of the patroon Amazing I reached out to Yahouti and said, you know, congratulations on this news and you know tell me about what it was like. I'll read I'll read any message you want me to read on the air on the next episode withithin Reason. He said, how did you get this number How dare you speak to me? Yahudi wrote to me last year I was writing and directing an original feature at DreamWorks. And I kept daydreaming about the day my favorite film podcasts would review it Then in August, the project was canceled For a while, I genuinely thought my career in movies might be open. That feeling of being unlucky of feeling like a failure became the seed for Freddy thirteenth So when I heard Dan on the Predator Badlands episode talking about how he wanted to make horror that his kids could watch, it felt like fate Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my project would somehow find its way in front of him honestly feels like a dream come true Oh and also since the main character is a Disney adult, I used the screenshot of Peter Sreta's Ordinary Adventures YouTube page in my pitch deck. I think that's what Wan Dan over So that's from Yahoti Ricadto The author of Freddy the thirirteenth Indie comic The basis for Dan Trachtenberg's US animated its own Also maybe the first movie about a Disney adult Like a that is a it's a template, you know, we love Peter But, you know, that person has not been in movies before M's interesting I think it's also interesting Dan Trackenberg has already shown he can do animated films, right? He directed the Predor, Kill of killer Kill of Killers. Yeahah. Really great animated film And It is also, you know, as we've heard, what he expressed in his Instagram post is a true fact that He has wanted to make films that his kids could watch And so this seems like a wonderful combination of the two things where he can Continue exploring his love love of genre cinema, but in a new way where it can finally be family friendly. I think it's pretty interesting Jeff Kanada, I assume you've heard some things about this project that you probably can't talk about, but any reaction publicly to Dan Track we're taking on Friday the thirteenth Wellow, what a heartwarming tale and you know, if ladies and gentlemen If you want achieve success in Hollywood. I think the first step is listening to this year pod Listen to the film. I mean Listeners of the film cast have gone on to win. Best director and best picture at the Oscars You know, they've gotten their projects made by Dan Trachtenberg. Wh knows What else could happen if you become a little coincidence? I absolutely Yes, don't take credit Absolutely Absolutely Yeahah, this is pretty exciting and u I I just what a what a cool comombo of great human beings. Really cool. And everybody needs to go see this when it comes out. so that we can retain another money horse patron I think what's also interesting about this is the Friday of the thirteenth Franchise has been in a terrible state for many years. L legally, I believe it's been tied up with all these conflicts. The last Friday of the thirteenth mainline movie was made in two thousand nine Right And this isnt Friday the thirteenth. It's completely different, right? This is not real but it's I understand. I understand, but it's like inspired by that concept. Yeah, you know what I mean? It's not the title is very close to five Nights at Freddy two. likeike it's you're going to get the kids. They're going think it's something t for them. Yeah. Yeah, you know, I know it's not it's not mainline Friday their Deam, But but, you know, it's I think it's clearly when you look at the the iconography on Yahoi's website and stuff, it's clearly inspired by it. And so it's like, oh, hey, nice that like that genre back in our lives again in some way, you know what I mean? Um So anyway I think that's pretty cool Cool stuff So congrats to them and we hope this project makes it into theaters and that everyone can check it out when they have a chance Again, that's Freddy the thirteenth, the new Dan Trachtenberg, Yahoti Micardo joint I mean, I think We should also mention it's probably a ways off. Yes. It's just been announced. It's not like you can go see it right now. Wek at the theater. Yeah he out Freddy the thirteent. That is some film news from the week. Let's take a break for a sponsor. We'll be back with what we've been watching right after this Corevadazzona It's got a word? In the twenty twenty six KSportage Turbo hybrid, it might as well be, because it can be one road trip. It's all about turbocharged power and hybrid efficiency working together. So you get the thrill of quick acceleration and the satisfaction of fuel efficiency. Book a test drive and keep the adventure going Kia. Mvement then inspires. Call eight hundred three three threety four Ka for details. Al drive safely Deveendor hardwire Tell us about something you have been watching this week Yeah, I was out last week, I was in New York for a while, so I got to check out some of my favorite theaters. And I got to see the Death of Robin Hood, the new Michael Seronnosski movie. He o man. I don't know what to make of this movie. I love Michael Sernvski. We've talked about Pig, which I think is an incredible movie. I was the one out here championing a Quiet Place Day onene, which I think is a genuinely great movie and a good entry to the Quiet Place franchise This movie is a really grim and slow and brutal sort of like retelling of the death of Robin Hood as a legend, but also it's just Logan. u act just made a loogan. It's really, really weird This is it The basic premise of this movie is that you know, Robin Hood is old veryery old and he was a bastard. likeike he stole, but it's not like he's somebody stealing for people. He was just A brutal person stole and pillaged and murdered. And now at his at the towards the end of his life, as he's very old, he's sort of reckoning with his legacy in what he did And it's a brutal sort of u exploration of that. It's an exploration of guilt. of trying to redeem yourself, it is Logan This movie is Logan. It's kind of, it's kind of funny. And also this movie is so brutal. I saw the Alama Draft house in Brooklyn whichich I will say, has gone way downhill thanks to Sony I did the you're ordering with your phone now the order online thing order online with your phone now at the Alma Draft House at which point they're like, donon't use your phone during the movie, but also if you need to order food, please use your phone. It's very confusing Um I saw this movie there And I struggle to stay awake Like this movie is slow, it's laborious and it's so brutal. L I woke up at the points where it was very brutal where other people in my audience were like, oh my God. ' there are there are child killings or brutal limb slaughterings. There's like this is a brutal movie. And I think the message of it, likeernovski makes sllow methodical movies that I think are often more interesting than you expect them to be I don't know what was going on here because essentially Robin Hood is the guy who was the best at what he did and what he did wasn't very nice B He is the Wolverine. He is the Wolverine of that time, but he's got a beard this time. He's got a beard and he's got a bow and arrow You know, that's that's very different I don't, I don't quite know what to make of this movie. There are some I think like Theatically it's interesting. Jordy Comer is very interesting in this. the sort of like exploration Of a legend of like a folk hero legend, And the reality of that could be interesting and the idea of redemption for somebody who is just irreddeemable. I think these are all interesting topics I would rather see it explored through the lens of a man with cllaws Basically like this I feel like Logan is such a good movie. We don't talk about like how great that movie is. but this movie is doing a Logan. I don't know why Hugh Jackman decided to do this. There is one scene where he is buck naked spreading like dirt over himself. so his scent does he doesn't give away his scent to his enemies. I feel like maybe he made that he made this movie just for that like ten second shot because he's like crouched down, just rubbing his muscled self with dirt. And I was like, o, you can still do that, you Jack man. That's cool. But beyond that, I found this movie to be kind of a slog, kind of brittle, kind of a mess. and it's a shame And I hope, I hope Michael Sernovski I don't know, comes back with something like a little more interesting. I just thought this one really missed the mark for me This I thought this was DeVindra Hardware Katnip, honestly one should heard of the death ofatn Sski. Yeah, exactly. It felt like two great tastes that go great together for DVindra Hardware. So I'm I'm sorry you didn't like this one. I've also heard it's slow I have to be honest, even after your negative review, though, I'm still kind of intrigued by this. I was gott to wait for VOD on this one I like how my negative because I'm going to give a very positive review soon too. it's going go way over your heads. It's going fly right by you. But this movie that I was disappointed by you're like, hh Well, no interesterest I already was interested to be like and then your your review has your interest. No no No it has blunted it slightly and therefore Okaykay, maybe I don't need to go see this in theater. You can wait VOD for this one. Yeah It is a pretty movie. It's it's like they there it's doing cool things. There's a lot of the Northman in here too, except the Northmen I think was like a wild ride that also kind of was just a fun action movie that took some really interesting twists and turns. I don't think this one has any It's not really twisty, it's really ponderous, It's really slow. Go watch the Northman, go watch Logan and you'll have basically the experience of watching this movie. Its better It seems like an odd movie to put out summer You know, it feels like this this feels like a March movie or something. know for like a November awwards baby movie. Yeah. I think they saw they saw Robin Hood in the title that were like Bockbuster question mark. It's Jackman and you see Jackman playing Robin Hood. That's a that sounds like fourour quuadrant action We haven't seen a major star play Robin Hood since Russell Crow, right? I think there was another one after that, But the Russell Crow one was the last one I mean, I think you're forgetting the Tarn Edgerton Yeah hood guys. I am forgetting that one Robin Haway. twenty eighteen Otto Batterurst director. anyyway. Yeah that was fun. It was kind of fun movie. All I don't think I saw it Tu Jackman has been going viral on social media. I've seen of his clips where he talks about his fitness regime Dudy, Dude is fit. Let me tell you that, old Robin Hood When he he's crouching down. So he's doing almost like it's the pose when the terminator lands. It's the crouching pose I so naked. Also naked, but it like if you're if you're buff, that is a great way to show off every every like moral of toned muscle that you have and Hugh Ackman went for it in this mo So why I never squat He said one of the most difficult things about maintaining that physique was eating six thousand calories a day. to prepare for Deadpool and Wolverine. That doesn't seem to help for me. I gonna say my Have you ever met iced cream? He said He said, it's quote, it's six thousand calories and it's not the calories you necessarily want. Yeah. Like half a pizza is six thousand calories, but this is chicken and it's silapia and beans Colapia and beans. I don't know why Colapia It must be some fish that is little happ be beans end quote. So ye. he's eating and he's I think he said like one of the hardest parts is eating tapia and beans when you are completely full. likeike you, you're full, you don't want to eat anymore, but you have to eat shoveling. also tapia working get into your perfect body. But you're also working at hardcore for like three, four hours a day. You need to have the time to do that. That is your job is to get buuff. Here's a question, here's a question. you can have Huge I mean, this is actually cr this is actually true thing that's available to all this. You can have huge aan's physique But You need to work out for four hours a day and eat six thousand calories worth of tilapia and beans. The answer to your question is self evident, David Would you do it? In somey world where working out and eating right can give you a good toned body. Are you gonna do it guys who clearly don't do that? It's only worthwhile when like like if Jeff is the new terminator, right and Jeff has to buff up for the next movie then yeah, you're going to do it. That's your job. Your job is buff, you know? Right? Well, that's what I always fantasized about. you know, when I was Yeah had dreams of being an actor. I was fantasized about getting a the role of like a boxer It's like, Ohh, yeah, you got an excuse. you get to train. I it's the Cumillil Naniani. It's Cumillile Naniani is us. Yeah, right?. He got the job He got the reason Did do it? Yeah ye. And he did it worked that well for him. you know, if you've seen his latest kind of special, he's he's maining it maintaining his physique out of spite. He can't he can't go back now because then it'll save everybody right. can through that. That's right. Al you imagine getting again, it's still it still sounds getting so buuff that movie and then the finale comes you're like, Pace guys, I'm out I'm not big, big final battle. I'm not These muscles are not gonna show. There's not gonna be for eighty per. Wow, That's some good Eternals recall right there. Yeah.. We recall plot of the Eetternals right there for those who are curious what he's tal plot Yes. Thats the death of Robin Hood. It's something different your heart always been watching this week I want to talk about Blades of the Guardians Yes, ye, it's finally happening Blazes of the Guardy is the new Yen Wu Ping movie that is gonna be out in video on deemmand this week Finally had a chance to watch this one and really the primary reason I watched it is to settle a dispute as to whether or not this movie has better action choreography than Mortal club at two. whichich is a statement that theing your hardore made. No, that's not what I said. No, it's not what reiterate that. Reerate what it' saying is I thought it was more fun I thought it was I thought mortal comombat too was doing more interesting things that was at least a little different That's all It Ping, the man knows how to make choreography. I know what he can do You' gonna have to yell Yon though, Ywn Dinger said. Ywn Yonain. And I also remember like y t too. That's what DavVingra said, and not me. I' never Yeah. that' religious And look, here is where I will give some credit to Divindra Hardaar is that I do think looking back on it, even though I think Mortal Combat I is a pretty bad movie that did show us Like probably one of the Bet and more interesting versions of what it's like to adapt video game fighting to the big. that we've ever seen Rightike just like we haven't we haven't had that many examples of that genre, right? of fighting game Fighting games being adapted to movies. We're gonna to get another one this year, by the way, I'm super excited about. I'm exited for. I saw a trailer for Street Fighter in front of Supergirl. and I was like, that looks freicaking awesome. Great, greatreat trailer. Let me tell you. Of this genre movie, I think I've seen all of them. I've seen Coreory UNs dead or alive I've seen like all the major ones at least. Yeah So and hey, like in terms of adapting V game fighting to movie form, Mortal Combat I did some cool stuff with that. So like cred to credits' due Having said that Blades of the Guardians Uh, is retty awesome in terms of Action choreography, I have to say. I think the plot is Kind of nonsense. and that's what I said too. Right Yeah, yeah. moovie as a movie. As a movie, it's only okay. There's this, you know, it's kind of classic throwback Chinese soap opera style tone like you're in the w. Yeah. Very jokey, very kind of wacky tone, very kind of goofball tone that this whole movie has But there's some fun moments plot wise. There's some fun things that happen, but overall That's not what you're going for. That's right. The movie is two hours long and I would say probably about one hour of it is fighting scenes. Right whichich is pretty good ratio. And what is really cool about this film is Yeah, you really feel like, hey, this is like the choreography feels really high quality and effortless, right? It feels like, o, this guy has been doing this his whole life and he knows how to do this in a way that's interesting and he knows how to do it in a way that looks cool and is impressive And also there's he's just like dashing these scenes off left and right. Like there's he can do it in his sleep at this point Yeah. That's right. That's right And I will say that if I'm going to describe what the plot of thisvie is Bles of the Guardians It's not as good as what I'm about to say, but this is close. It's basically Mad Max Fury Road But instead of horses of cars people are using horses. Yeah. and it's all Chinese people instead of white people, basically. That kind of that's what Glades Gardians is now. it's not as good as Mad Max Road They're in the desert. they're riding around a horses offten you see like a scene of like fifty dudes on horseback just like riding down in the spectacular formation Re What not CG dudes. That's cool.. Yeah. Yeah. There's one sequence that is extremely heavily inspired by a sequence in dyx forree road, that I'm not going to reveal what it is, but Suffice to say, you know, like it takes a lot of inspiration, I think from MX Rroad. But yeah, some of the fight scenes are thaking in spectacular. Uh and It is And particularly, here's what I'm going to call out that's special. about B blades of the Gardans Uh They do a lot of stuff on horseback. That's really amazing. Stuff that literally looks like it should be illeg.aybe it's illegal in China, I don't. But like it looks like many horses were grievously injured during the course of this movie And it's like, wow, I don't even know how they pulled that off But it looks incredible and hopefully no horses were harmed and I cannot I cannot vouch for that I was doing backflips when I saw this movie. I feel like your praise is very tempered. Really? I feel like I'm praising I'm praising I'm talking about sim se. I feel like some of those sequences, my jaw was on the floor of just what What I was witnessing, like the audacity of Just the concept of how what the sequence is going to be. Right, right. You know, like and then totally delivers on the promise of what it just like what is that That's insane. they're doing it. You know, I thought And again Not a movie who I didn't care about any of the characters. R. It's not a great movie movie. Man, those sequences are just one after another after another. And they keep going and then it'll be like we're paring off these two to have them the most epic fight. And then we're gonna even one up that epic fight with these other two dude. It's like its I thought it was incredible I'm also going to call out that This movie takes place in the ancient past and all the people are using old timey weapons And they're doing it in a really interest like they're using those weapons in a really interesting way or ways you haven't necessarily seen before And that is also cool. So those are like a couple things that I think that really distinguish this movie from like a normal action movie, right? It's just like the use of horses and the use of all these cool weapons and of course it's like just really excellent choreography throughout and the volume of action is really high. I had a good time with this one. I think if you like these kinds of movies, then you will have a really good time with the Blades of the Guardians And in terms like bllades the Gardians versus Mortal combat too Actually almost don't even feel like comparing them. I feel like what they're trying to do is so different. Yes. You're useless to us, d But they they are doing different things. I was just saying personally, what kind of hit me more was like, I've not seen that before withith moral comat I think there is a scale of ambition in terms of what it's trying to do with Blades of the Guardians that I didn't see in Mortal Combat do, you know, likeike and ye just just the scale of Blades of the Guardians is beyond anything in Mortal Combat do in my opion But Moral Commentu does have some things to recommend it for sure. So I'm not little. I also love that I mean, no spoilers, but the very very end of Blades of the Guardians is kind of like they kind of they show Yan Wooping and he and like It just seems like he's saying, this is it. This is my magnimum Ous. This is the culmination of my. This is my masterpiece, right? Right here. I've left it all on the table Here you go, audience. I've got nothing more to squeeze out of my. Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah And I would say I would say I don't think this is the best movie that Yang Yu Ping has worked on, but it does feel like Hey, if if if'm if I'm to watch a movie that is representative of Yen Yu Ping skills. It's like this is not this is a really solid movie to do that. Also by the way, Jet Lee is in the movie. I know you guys brought this up Jet Lees in the movie Literally worth watching the movie just to see gentlely. Like's back He's doing a podcast now with his daughter. It's lovely. I know lovevely to see. I've been watching the YouTube version where he's just like, Hey, I got some Advice to share, you know? I'm just I'm out here living life.. I'm a master martial artist and I got some stuff to share. I think told me something I had never heard before. Fist of Legend apparently was a failure in China. I did not realize. It was a production he did. It was a failure. It was it was a success internationally because of Tarantino And he kind of like pushed that movie at the time It was Quin Tarantina presents a lot of like Hong Kong action movies. so I didn't know that. I think if you are not a millennial It is It's hard to understand how ubiquitous gently was in the nineties. Yeah. Gently is one of those people that really successfully made the jump from Hong Kong cinema to American cinema. And there was a time when he was seemingly in everybody. I guess, sorry, not the nineties late nineties, early two thousands would be, right Later nineties two thousands. Yeah. When he was in lethal weapon four, That was a big one. He was like one That was first That was the first one. Yeah. That was a He was the one of the main baddies in lethal weapon four. Then he was in Romeo must die, Kiss of the Dragon, the one hero, cradle to grave and unleashed in the course of about five years. Yeah. No It's like ten years. That was like a ten years span. No I literally just read them right now. I just read them up. Romeo must die two thousand unleashed two thousand five, but Davindra, that's an interesting reaction because the point I'm making is he was every for a time, it seemed like every week could go to the theater there's a there's a Jet L movie out there Yeah Yeah for for that span. It's I was watching his stuff in the early nineties too, I guess. so it's like I've been following him forever. But you were looking for like who once upon a time, you know, like it's Yeah obviously like just legendary filmmaker. and I do think that his Hong Kong output was much better overall than that his Ameran output. We should we should at some point Fun project Let's reassess Jet Lee's American movies. Let's just go down the list because I think there are some of them are not N not America. movies. Some of them B but there's shit, there's shit in Birmium Bastay. L I remember being in the theater We like it did this like x ray thing when like bones were broken and people in the theater were like, holy shit, I've never seen that before. But he was just so fast. and it's great to see him back especially in this movie Uh spepeaking of Hong Kong cinema, by the way, random note. Did you hear DeVindra that there is going to be a kung fu soccer coming out this summer Do it. Okay. this is the what you asked for. You spoke into Wh is Sall and soccer? This is the Stephven Cho directed sequel. to shallin soccer That's called kung fu soccer theoretically releasing In July of twenty twenty six. That is that's exciting. In two days, July twenty twenty What? How's that happen? in not here in No Yeah, I don't P probablyably in probably in China and Hong Kong, but you know Anyway. U just something worth noting. But that's what Stehven Tr has been away for a long time. so this is great So point I was making with with Jetleee is like, yeah, he was He was everywhere for a little bit. He made a lot of movies, most of which in my opinion weren't that good Um, but relatively well and they were really well advertised and He became this huge presence and then he's kind of faded away for a little bit Um but Blades of the Guardian shows that he still has got it And I it's a delight like literally if I just got to see Jet Lee do his thing again in Blades of the Guardians and the movie had nothing else would have been worth watching for me. So that go theater for a five, ten minute fight scene, Wth it. Yeah. if it's Jet Lee, abbsolutely. Yeah. if it'set. I mean, and, you know, his American output is not like the stuff that's most beloved to me, right? Fist of Legend, onnce Upon a Time in China, like those are the ones that like really got me into martial arts and jetly and so on forth. So like Uh, I have enjoyed and admired and followed his career for many, many years. So just great to see him again in Blades of the Guardians, which again O video on demand This week That is something I've been watched this wee Let's take a break for a sponsor. We'll be back with more what we've been watching right after this Jff Ganota h us up something of you watch this. I not to spend a ton of time on it. I know you have an entire other podcast devoted to this show, but I wanted to Briefly talk about the return of House of the Dragon on HBO Max, the one to watch for HBO Max Well said because I was blown away by the premiere episode. I felt like the first episode of seeason three of House of the Dragon felt like the season finale of most other shows or ing the season final it started It was like, oh, hey Remember The thing that's in the title of our show Yeah. We got dragons We got dragons And it felt like they spent an entire feature films budget on the first episode of this show. and it was all on the screen There were high profile deaths. there was wall to wall action It felt like the season finale you know, of most seasons of of a, you know, a Game of Thrones style show. But it was the first episode and I just I was blown away. I thought it was epic And so I'm so back on that show. I think that S has I mean, it's been obviously very successful, but I don't feel like people talk about it in the same breath as Game of Thrones and I think it's I think it's better some respects some seasons of Game of Thrones Yeah, but I definitely think it is you know, it has earned place in that And that shows Pantheon I don't think it's the I feel like the sensibility around it is that it's kind of an also rnd to Game of Thrones and I do not think of it that way. I think it is really I'm into it. I really like it a lot I'm going to agree with Jeff Kada that the season three premiere of House of Dragon is probably onene of the most Tnically ambitious episodes of television I've ever seen Yeah just Just in terms of the scale and scope of what they're attempting, the number of Background actors, the number of action moments, just the CG that they used and had to integrate with real life stuff. it is Unbelievable How Grand and ambitious that episode is So I also want to join Jeff in giving episode a shout out. Davindra, have you fallen off the the train Hot Da long time ago, long time ago. U Season one, I recall like there the budget was amazing. like visually looked impressive. They had the dragons everywhere. And then it really started to seem like, huh You really made Dragon seem less special Didn't you? Like they're just right. Everyone like using dragons. They're just Be in because every thrs there's only like a few, right? And then here it's like everyone aal thing. There a finale game thr with baby dragons. Yeah. Yeah Yeah. So I didn't really care for anybody in the show or anything. So I may catch up. I've heard good things, but also I was I just didn't care about these characters. I hope they fixed that because I hear like this show's mostly a slow burn except when it wakes up for action, you know? I will say I did not think the season one was excellent. I thought it was interesting. It had a weird time jump thing that was very I found very jarring and it just didn't the whole season didn't flow. I agree with you DaVinjra. I wasn't super into all the characters I have completely changed my tune on this and I think it has really found its footing seeason three, I am just I hit it hits the ground flying. and u so compelled by these families and particularly the two matriarchs that you know, are are kind of u at the forefront of this Uh, of these two sort of warring parties and I don't know. I'm into it. Dave, are you I feel like you were a little negative on the first season as well. I found the time jumps to be pretty frustrating and also they switched, you know, they did a huge time jump and changed the actors. Yeah for the main two leads like some of the actors Yeah, onlyn some of the actors is right. And honestly, I think that's a result of They didn't know how well the show was going to do, right? Yeah. I think if they knew how well the show was going to do, they would have taken more of their time with those actors. But they're like we have we want to cram a bunch of plot into the first because like we may never get another shot of this because at the time It was a very unproven concept that Game of Thrones could exist beyond the original series, right? Like one no one knew it could still be popular Uh So I struggled with some of the time jump stuff in the first season And but that said, I thought season one overall was quite good And season two was pretty good too except Um I thought, you know, in my opinion, season two ended extremely abruptly and what we now understand is that probably wasn't supposed to end that abruptly. and it's because the writer strike, right? the writer strike and the Sag strike all happened once And really The season three premiere should have been the season two finale. Really, that's kind of what how it should have played out. It feels that way. Yeah. I thought season two was only okay because it really feels like it builds up to a big nothing that happens at the end of season two Uh, but now now the show feels like it's back on track and firing on all cylinders I will say though the show is quite a bummer You know, like it's not a Game of Thones has always been that. Agreed, agreed. But it feels like even more of a bummer because like Oh I don't know, there's very few characters to root like in Game of Thrones there are actually like some decent characters, like a handful of decent characters, right? that you're like, oh, I actually really like them. I root for them. fewew of those in the show. we're coming off of a night of the Seven Kingdoms too, which I think had some really likable characters. Yeah, likekable characters that you're like, o, what that's a pure of Noble Heart. Like I want to rope for that part you know, like very little that going on the House of Dragon. So So I admire it a lot. I like a lot of what it's doing. It is obvious I think it is one of the biggest shows on television and it deserves that. place in our culture. Um, but yeah, it is it is a little bit This is a little bit of a bummer, you know, in terms of watching a show sometimes therefore the Dave Chen stamp of approval. I was just gonna say like that seems like not a negative to you Y confirm. House of the Dragon seeason three is airing right now on HBO MX I've actually taken a step back from a cast of Kings this season because this move my move back to the United States is happening during this whole launch, literally Premiere happened the day before I flew back from from Portugal to the United States. I was like Jesse Earl and Kim Renfer are hosting Cast Kings and doing a wonderful job there. So would recommend you check it out for a deep dive into each episode Uh Okay, let's move on Divingr hardard. Iit us up something you watching this wee Yeah, I've been watching something amazing. I've been watching the Vampire Lestat, the new basically it's a continuation of interview with the Vampire on AMC plus. This is essentially season three of interview with. So this is not technically same show as Interview with the Vampire. It is the same show. It is the same show rununner. It is called It is a different name though. You know how books have different names? One book was called Interview withith the Vampire and the next book was called The Vampire L'ot. They're just doing that. You know how they don't do that on TV 'cause it's very confusing? Yeah. You know how maybe we I don't know, It's not that big of a deal. It's not that hard. You know how it is a big deal The main character's name is still in the title. I think I think he can figure it out. This is the third season of interview with the vampire And I will say tried. failed. to convince my co host to watch it. So I'm going to go a different tactic here. I don't think David Chen and Jeff Kanada will like the Vampireless stot. I don't think this show's for them I don' think like it's just it's just I'm watching. Why not? Why not too sophisticated. too soisticated It's not for them. They won't like it. I think this is one of the best things on TV. I highly suggest the audience check it out. If you have any love for the Anne Rice book or vampire stuff in particular What Roland Jones is doing with these shows is incredible. I gushed about season one and two of the interview with the Vampire. The problem was it was really hard to see because it was only on AMC plus or you could buy it like individually on iTunes or whatever. which that's what I ended up doing Seasons one and two of Interview are now on Netflix You've got no excuse. They're sitting right there. And I think they're some of the best TV shows ever made. like this is This is high level adaptation of Anne Rice's work with a real love for her language. Her language is still in the show. This is like a literary really strong. This is like the game of theirrones level adaptation. of this work essentially. they have made some changes. I didn't I forgot in Anne Rice's books. The vampires actually do not have sex. She kind of erased sex, at least for the men The blood sucking was the sort of like erotic thing, but in Anrice's universe, The vampires don't have sex The universe of this show. E everyone's having sex T all that. it's like it's a more erotically charged version of that Um, And if you don't know what it's just wild that they kept this going. likeike I love the fact Vampire Lestat Lestat becomes a rock star. If you guys don't under if you know interview with the vampire from the Tom Cruise movie Flashwward like a hundred years or like into like modern day, he is a rock star now in modern time. So I almost wish they had the ability to do this with the Tom Cruise like version of the character. But Sam Rese who plays Lestat is now a legit rock star. This show is just having so much fun with it. Daniel Hart is the composer of the series and like he has gone and made a lot of like great songs for it too. So like ites that delicate balance of like really fun In the rock, songs that are genuinely bad at times because Lastad is not a great sing And in fact, I think like a lot of these vampires love human art but are bad at it and it's kind of a fun tension of of the series. But there is that It's him kind of retailing his it's a continuation of his romance with Louis de Pontalac It is the book. It is the book and things that happen in the book happen in this show. So you get more of Lestat's background in his really messed up Family life. That is all, that is all here There are also references to Akasha, which if you've seen the Eia M moie Queen of the Damned That's her, that's her. Eistata is in that movie. So that character will be appearing in the season as well this out guys. If you like If you like Ghic romances, vampire stuff, like This is an incredible series, notot for Davave and Jen not for Dave and Jeff. It's great for everybody else, but Dave and Jeff should not see it. But I think like this is a tremendous work of adaptation. True Blood, I think was the last series It did vampire stuff really well and did some new stuff, but that was like L your camp. Trrouue Blood like was romantic, but also had a lot of camp and was really silly at times. This show can be silly but it is more grounded in likeike a beautiful romanticism that I think evokes what Anne Rice she wrote these characters. That's this universe she's built in. So it's tremendous. And if you want to see Eric Bagoosian do an incredible Anthony Bourdain impression and that character goes through a lot of things by this season It's worth checking out. That's the Vampireless stop. It's on AC plus right now. If you have not don't jump right into this. you have to see seasons one and two of interview with the vampire. Those are on Netflix. thoseose are also not for Jave and Dath Dave and Jeff, but for everybody else, Prob check it out. This is some of the best TV on air right now And you know, email us and tell us how much you like it and how much it's not for Daveid and Jeff. Sash roomcastagejma dot com And yeah, I guess if I want to start, I got to start on Netflix and watch Interview with the vampire seasons one and two before I get to those It's it's not that long. It's not many episodes. You guys are out here watching like many, many episodes of shows that are not nearly as good. I will tell everybody, if you sound vaguely interested, watch the first episode of Interview with the Vampire and I dare you to stop That is something DVinra hardware has been watching with vampireless stock Guys. I don't know about you guys, when I'm traveling I like to choose a very specific type of thing to watch You know Uh it has to be something that is someomewhat interesting enough that it can hold my attention, but not so interesting that I'm going to regret not watching it when I'm more focused or have more time and energy or have a big screen And so this week, I decided to watch the new Army haammer Uve Bowl movie, Citizen Vigilante No really I don't know if you guys heard has basically been banned in Germany. The German Ratings board has declined to rate it which means's essentiallyt you have to see the movie. they saw Ubo and Armyhammer like No, thank you People are still giving U Bow money to make movies. He's also like straight up he's become like Nazi adjacent basically. Well, I mean, that's that's kind of what the Yeah, the thrust of this film is Dave Chen was like, give it to me now. Let's see what this Nazi thinks. Well, I'mlike I' serious this Nazi can't watch this movie with a vampire. The Nazi made something? Wow to be clear, Uveable has denied accusations that he is Pro Dazi. I just want to put that out there. sure. Now Yeah But but that said usually honestly, David is here for the Army hammer of it all because he's a huge completely unprom army hammer fan I'm not going to talk to you much, you know, Arby Hammer obviously was been a part of our culture for several years after accusations of abuse and horrifying text messages surfed. Yeah. And He's kind of trying to rehab his image and integrate himself back into Hollywood Soety's given some interviews where he says that he he literally wants to act more than anything in the world. And if somebody was like, please do this cat food commercial He says he would do it. I'm just going to say a cat food commercial would be an upgrade from this. It would be also very ironic the cat food commercial. Yeah. Can you imagine are hammers selling cat food? N made for girlfriend. U Okay, I'm not going to talk too long about this, but I kind of was curious like why did this movie get banned in Germany? Like what is that all about? That was intriguing to me U Also apparently Elon Musk posted this film on on X. because it really supports his white supremacist worldview Andan's like, thank you, give me more. Yeah Citizen Vigilante is about a an American who inherits a business in Europe And so he goes to Europe and decides to look after his business And it turns out he's also just really mad at undocumented immigrants. like he he hates undocumented migrants who are shown depicting Heinous crimes against white people. They're the chos this film U and it there's actually a real life case in Germany that this is based off like one of the incidents in this movie is based off of, but I will just say this about Citizen Vigilantity. This is one of the worst films I've ever seen in my entire life. H It's not just worse because of The fact that it's extremely racist. It's also poorer just on a technical level. So as an example, Under rare occasions When you're listening to the film cast or some of my other podcasts, I'm just gonna speak for my shows, not you guys Uh sometimes Uh we accidentally leave in a bad take, right? Sometimes like somebody I go off, I say something and then it's like, oh actually shit, like let's go cut that out. like And then I'll make a note, Hey, Dave or whoever's editing this out later And but then sometimes like it actuallyident won't get cut out. It would just be left in There is stuff like that in this movie That is like Literally, I just heard the character say the same line two times again Yeah, and they left both takes it It's like There there is stuff that Uh is just plainly incompetent from like just very basic technical filmmaking level. That sounds like you're watching a Boldld movie. That's right Thats I don't know what else we expect from this man But I think U the movie is also essentially like Imagine a brain Imagine a brain that has been completely cooked off of Fox News and OAN and all of the most like extreme right wing s like news sources in this country. Can I vote for that brain? Can you make that brain president? And imagine if like you made a movie where like, you know, people are just seeped in all this extremely anti immigrant sentiment, right via these news sources. And it's it's foments a lot of this anger. like manan, I wish I could just go and just kill these people. This movie is that fantasy made into a movie There is No plot to speak of really. There's no like arc that any character goes through. It's just Army hammer going and killing a bunch of migrants esssentially is what this is And so it is people around you think, Dave, as you were watching this. I love that Dave is returning to America. And he was like, what is the one piece of media I need to digest on this flight to prepare me to land back in my country of origin Well, I mean, it does really it is kind of really funny that It's an Americane like why is this American care so much about this stuff? Be the movie, by the way The movie opens with a drone shot over like this highway and it says on screen Europe the country of Europe? The country of Europe because they know if they used an actual country, people in that country would be so pissed that they would ban the film. And of course, like Germany actually did functionally ban the film because There's an incident in the film that's heavily inspired by something that actually happened in Germ But like we can't actually name an actual country because then like we'd actually piss off that country. So we're just going to call it Europe Um And you don't I hear Jonathan Majors has a new movie coming out and just make time for in your schedule for that. I'll work on that. But but yeah, it's like this American it's like this American guy Army Hamry, like he's going over to Europe and he just cares a lot about justice in Europe. Like it's like, why do you care so much about what's going? What was what's your life like in America? Maybe you can like it for, you know, it's it's just is like Pure nonsense. It's kind of like the American the stereotype of American tourists going in and like Italy. They're like, don't don't fight the pickpocketers if they pickpocket you and a lot of Americans are like You just stole for me.'m gonna I'm gonna at least try to stop them and maybe give them Right rightight. It's it's like a literal fight back a little more R Literal white power fantasy this movie.. It is terrible on every level. It has basically no redeeming qualities whatsoever It should not be viewed by anyone. It is not a so bad it's good movie And you gave it ninety minutes of your life Good To me be forty minutes of our podcast. Yeah. Okay. It has not been that long, Jeff Anyway The movie's Citizen Vigilante And It is actually available right now a video in deand. And yet he will still not watch Inview with the vampire. Yeah inccredible I mean does kind of truth to what you said about I did. Yeah. This good TV is not for these two guys. you know. As I said, as I said, I was traveling, you know, I didn't have my full faculties, you know, And so I was like, oh, hey, here's an interesting kind of like newsy movie. struck your head and you' just incapable of making good decisions. Now that I'm settled back in, I'm still recovering from jet lag, but now that I'm settled back in It's only going to be good movies from here on out guys No exceptions fifteen years of the film cast To the contrary Jeff Kana, had a su S somethinging you watch a Well, another thing premiered Uh right right after House of the Dragon or right around that. Yeah, there's no times because it's sol dreaming, but on HBO Max the Wind to watchatch for HBO Max And it's a new show from Larry David. What? Larry David? Turb your enthusiasm, you betcha He's got a new show prodroduced by Barack Obama's production company? Incredible Brock and Michelle Obama's production company. Yes, and it's about American history. What Celebrating our two hundred fiftieth year as a country. Oh my goodness. I tuned into life Larry and the pursuit of happiness and almost history of America. Rlls right off the tongue People have described this as Kirby enthusiasm in costumes. that is notot inaccurate Uh, it is it is basically Larry David doing Mel Brooks' History of the Wld partart one M except it's not the world, it's just America It is a series of sketches in the same way that history of the world, part one n too the fair History of the World Part I, which just came out a couple of years ago and I actually really liked But heres the world part one is very near and dear to my heart I love that movie. I watched it many times as a kid Um So in the same way that that movie is just sketches. It is different time periods and we're just popping in, we're doing a funny bit about that famous historical moment or that famous time period Uh And then we're popping out, we're going moveving a different time period That's exactly what Larry David is doing with this show Again, I've only watched the first episode. And I'm a big fan of Karibbey enthusiasm I have been, you know, it' certainly ebbed and flowed that shows quality level. but I love the idea of that show, the sort of improv nature of it, felt very loose and fun. Lots of great side actors and I'm genuinely a fan. I'm going to tune in to see what Larry David is doing next This show is terrible in my opinion. I am shocked at how I hate to use this word, but it just it looked, it felt lazy. It felt really tired and you know, he's getting up there in the years, but he's still a sharp Funny dude who whose comic sensibility I really like generally speaking But man, I mean, it is literally For example, guys, If you were to just pull someone off the street and say, hey Give me a scenario from American history. with Larry David in it You know They would probably go, oh, well I don't know, when we're making the Declaration of Independence, maybe Larry wants to add some new things to it that he's complaining about and they're Dumb Larry David things. Yeah, o, okay. well, that's the most obvious idea. That's where the show starts, right? That's where we start is We're ratifying the Declaration of Independence Larry David stands up as one of the founding fathers and says, but I want to add some things Like It's illegal in their new country that we're forming to share an umbrella A, you shouldn't have to share an umbrella. If I'm going to a dinner party I shouldn't it's like, okay All right budd I get it I get it. We're doing curby enthusiasm jokes in the context of American history, Right It's just the most obvious on the nose There's no Cverness here. Like where's the the kind of oh, unexpected flash of Insightful you know, comedic wit that I would expect It is really I was surprised at how just Um Flat it all felt Uh it felt it felt like the most obvious take. And I was disappointed I was very disappointed. I mean, there's there's a scene where he's sitting next to Rosa Parks on the bus Not the bus that she refuseed to move in an earlier bus before she decided to do that. Uh, and, you know, he's just complaining about other stuff You know? U, And but it's Lar David in a wig You know Playing a different character. Uh, it's just, um Again, I've only seen one episode of this, but I struggled to get through it, frankly. It just it's just dipping into different time periods, doing a sketch isn't particularly It's like The first draft You know, it's it's it's the sketches that Lauren Michaels would throw out and be like, okay, give me something More interesting, guys. Wow Mm I was just saying Lure Michaels because of That's kind of the process of Sat and I liive as they read a bunch of sketches and many of them get thrown out U'm It just felt to me like the the laziest version of this idea and I did not expect that from this creator who I genuinely usually like I also saw the first episode and I have to say I think Your enjoyment of this show will heavily depend on how much you enjoy watchatching and listening to Larry David complain about things, basically. Right? Like If you greatly enjoy that I think you'll have a good time with life Larry in the pursuit of unhappiness. Did you like it I thought it was fine, you know, like I did not hate it as much as you. I agree with you that The s where he says this in parts of American history are like almost completely extraneous.? Like That's right. There's no point to it. There's no they make some like reference to old timey things, but that's about it. right? Like it's not it's not particularly cutting or anything like It's just mean more of the jokes half the jokes are the anachronistic right I'm talking about something like there's a There's a whole sequence of him as Alexander Graham Bell intntroducing the telephone. Yeah. And then, you know, people are like Well, what if we could get a different ring tone? You know, it's like, o, come on It's just so it's like the first draft of any of these ideas. It's the laziest You know, there's no u actual It just doesn't feel like anything clever is added to the pantheon of comedy in it. and it's like what works about Kirby enthusiasm, such as it is, is that It's this incredibly wealthy person in incredibly, you know, sort of elite society, still acting like a child, you know? And there's something very fun about the voyeurism of that of being along for the ride of like these these parties that you would love to be at with very interesting people, but he's still can't get over something that anybody should be able to get over reacing that in the context of these historical moments that playay out like likeike real sketches. I mean real It's real Saturdayight Live here. I mean, it's real like we're all just dressing up in wigs and pretending to be, you know, it's Henry Winkler as John Hancock, you know, it's like Okay I don't know None of it works for me at all. I'm sorry to hear that. But the show is life, Larry and the pursuit of happppiness, unhappiness. Puruit of unhppiness Yeah.ursuit of unhappiness. Jeff Canada not a fan It's on HBOMX You do get a cool monologue from Barack Obama at the beginning th? Yes. Yes, that was nice All right, DaVindra, hit up with one last thing you watch this week Yeah, I finally got to catch up on the movie. I've been to see for a very long time, Brian D Pala's blowout. Have you guys seen this movie Incredibly. yes. I saw it the criteria. I think I have the criterion disk. That's how I watched it. I got that. So Barnes and Noble and other retailers are having their half off criterion sale right now. So I got the four K for this thing This movie absolutely rules. I'm kicking myself for not seeing it up until now because one of my favorite older films is the conversation And I love a film about the process, the process of things like spy work in this case, Joon Travolta plays a sound recording artist who is just like going out and recording sounds in nature to put into a movie that he's working on and ends up being wrapped up into this conspiracy involving a car accident and everything And this movie' just a great, great time. Travolta is great. John Lithgow is in this as a sort of like wiry Why are we, I don't know, soldier slash agent, somebody doing bad things that you know on behalf of the villain and kind of off on their own. And Nancy Allllen's in this too, She's a lot of fun. Nancy Allllen from RoboCop. I really enjoyed the movie, but specifically Damn Brian De Poma. Just like he was just like every shot is just like, oh, this is a incredible split diopter shot. This is an incredible like way of framing this location or something It's fantastic. If you just want to see somebody like at the height of their powers This movie is definitely definitely worth watching I also appreciate just like, oh man, this is such a throwback to old school tech. This movie was made in nineteen eighty one. At one point in this movie, we see John Travolta slowly stitch together Frames of a thing Yeah, frames of images from a book and he captures them in the camera that you use for animation. Then he has to drive over to the film place where they process that and then he gets on the pay phone it's like, Hey, would you like to meet me up for this thing at some point. the old schoolness of it too was like, man This would all happen in like five minutes, wouldn't it right now You just like you have the content, you make the content. makeake a video call to that person in five minutes. This took him a whole day to do all these various tasks as part of this conspiracy. It's just kind of kind of funny. It's a great grip throwback Travolta is great, everyveryone's great in this but specifically man I love watching D Pama just like att the height of his powers, it's incredible It is an amazing film and I'm not going to spoil it, but I will say that Uh I think The ending of that film really sticks with you and it's particularly a good movie to watch around july fourth. Yeah. Yeah. So you know, I would suggest if you have ever been interested in Blowout, which is available in the Criterion colloection Uh the sort of broader themes of that film I think resonate over time. likeike the craft is incredible, but just beyond that, like the broader them. fight. He's fight for truth, ultimately, which is a beautiful thing to see we right now. Absolutely. If you have a four K player, this looks great. This looks like this looks better than if I would go and you know, try to watch it in D theater or something. Blowout, It's something DeVindra Harderar has been watching this week All right, that's gonna bring us to the end of what we've been watching this week. Let's get to weekly plugs. We're gonna to do weekly plugs think G L fs. wee plugs plugs plugs, plugs plugs. Wekly plugs a part of show week weve lookuck something else've been making. Okay. Welcome to the filmcast review of Supergirl. I'm gonna re isolate that clip Save it for proosterity Welcome to the filmast review of Supergirl. I'm going to read the plot summary for this movie from IMDB. Kara Zorl, AK Supergirl joins forces with an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home end quote. This is the second Movie. That has come out in James Gunn's new DC universe Next one that's going to come out Cayface this fall and then the new Superman film next summer I think we all were pretty positive about Superman when it came out last year and I was pretty curious as to whether James Gunn could continue the momentum It seems like from a box office perspective, he has not been able to. obbviously he is only the EP on this one, Craig Gillespie directed this But I am really curious whether we actually liked this movie Kanada, let's start with you this week. What did you think of Super Girl? Dave I guess you could say when I thought a supergirl is best summed up form Let's hear it Je When Craig Gillespie directs thee action and visual effects he gets his money's worth I just wanted more earth Less guardians of the Galaxy Wow Well that. This is like M and M level Limerick rhyming here, right? Like it is You are watching an equivalent of Beethoven Limbericks. Jeff didn't in the do movie. Youre watching the airbud ofim. There's no rule that says you can't rhyme Gallexi Affects he Uh I wanted to love this movie. I wanted to love it. and there's I didn't not like it. I liked it I wanted to love it and There is a lot to like about it I think Millie Alcock is Awesome. Yeah. Awesome in this part. S. so great. L She really has to do a lot of heavy lifting in this movie and she' incredibly charming, incredibly likeable U she she has a real journey as the character. It's There's so much of it resting on her shoulders and she does it. She does it I loved her. and I loved watching her. I think her hair is Magic, like incredible hair in this movie Um And the third act Big set piece action sequence in my opinion, is a banger Banger, like So much going on. It's awesome. There's stuff happening over here and stuff happening over here. There's tension over here. We We got people in peril. We got, you know, Supergirl being awesome. We got Lobo H reallyally fun action sequence to end this movie. I think it ends with a crescendo in a really cool way What couldn't ever sort of get on this movie's wavelength. It takes a long time to rev itself up. And I understand what it's doing. and I think it's got a really cool It's got a really cool take. This is based heavily on Woman of Tmorrow, the I've not read that to be frank with you, to be honest. I should. I've heard it's excellent. I've heard it's better than the movie frankly Yeah I have not read it But It's a cool take on the character and it's very different. I think one of the neat things about watching James Gunn's approach to rebooting the DCU is his embrace of all of the wackiness that comes with comic books. and you know, I'll use the the descriptor comic bookie sometimes, you know, that's very comic bookie. And what I mean to say when I say that as a, you know Huge fan of comic books. Comic books were such a huge part of my life growing up literally my obsession growing up was comic books And I use that term to describe The fact that in comic books bothoth Marvel and DC superhero comics There is sort of there's sort of an acceptance of everything. Everything is happening all at once, right There's vampires and space aliens and Gu who can invent literally anything they want. All of it exists all the same time, all at once. and We don't question any of it. It is there's any kind of explanation for a thing that it pulls from science fiction, that pulls from Ghic horror that pulls from anything you want. It is all a big salad that is all happening at the same time And it is doesn't constrain itself to any one You know, set of rules. All the rules can be different for any at any given time and things bump into all the different rules all the time And there's a certain amount of fund to that Uh usually in Film, for example, trraditionally, if you have a science fiction movie, it can break the rules in like one way, one major way, right? It can ask you to suspend your disbelief for one thing Uh and it's like in this movie, There's aliens or, you know, in this movie, there's vampires. It's not all the same thing all at once But in comic books, that's not the case. and James Gunn's take on this DCU is we're jumping in The train is already moving and it's already this comic book world where everything exists All of the wild weird wackiness of comic books where all these rules can be broken, all the real world rules can be broken at the same time is happening and He had a lot of experience doing that with Guardians of the Galaxy, right? Marvel's cinematic universe did not do that Marvel sort of systematically those blocks from like, hey There's a guy who like is smart enough to build a suit out of iron Right You buy that? Okay, okay, c c c cool cool. There's also a guy Who was a fighter in World War two and got frozen. You buy that? Okay, Okay, you're with us so far. Let's here we go And we worked up to intergalactic space aliens and Cosmic Right Gauntlets of gems James Gun is like, okay, we've already established. Let let's just throw everything in already into this crazy soup And And there's a certain energy that's really fun, and I thought really worked in Superman But with Supergirl, I think that Nion Wors against the movie for me Mhm. I think there's a sequence there's a there's a tiny little flashbacky moment in this movie that flashes back to when Kara first goes to Metropolis. And I was like, o I wish That was our movie because it's grounded, it's human, it's relatable. There's something really Um, I think very, very compelling about it. because you really get insight into her and they're using it to do all that stuff but they're using it in shorthand of like, here's just this quick little reference to that And I think the rest of the movie is this bombastic like, oh there's aliens. We're in Guardians of the galaxy. We're in this intergalactic chaos of Every exists all at once you have you have liked those kinds of movies in the past, including Gardians of Galaxy. like why would saying Yeah. Wh that Gard for you here I love. I love that in the first Superman. The first Superman, the corn sweat S man is that one hundred percent. it's There's already Guy Gardeners already doing super there's giant sppace aliens coming to metropolis and banging into buildings and like It is that And I dig it But I think starting Supergirl in space in the wackiness I think for me works against this movie and the movie has to do such heavy lifting to get us into a place that for me felt relatable and connected me to the character. Like shes she's a lot of fun But The world in which we're in just feels so disorienting to me that I just felt like there was too much going on. Like this character isn't as Well known as G Kent, ight And so you can't shorthand it as much. att least I didn't think so. I think it's a harder Till to swallow to go Here's a new character To most people in this bizarre world that also takes a lot of establishing to even understand the dynamic is of it. And by the time we sort of get to her being supergirl supergirl feel like it's already kind of exhausting And It just felt like there was too much going on. and I wish this first like this kind of could have been The second Supergirl movie maybe. whatever I just wish the first This time we're introduced to the Millie Alcox suupergirl., it's just been a little cleaner and a little easier to get into That said I liked the movie I just L love them I think that with Superman, they did all the stuff that you said and they assumed everything, right? But like And they tried a similar approach here. The problem is Not everyone knows super R Like everyveryone knows Superman. We've all heard that Origin story like ten times There was a whole movie series by a guy named Zack Snyder. You may or may not have heard of him U and so like you don't need earlier that by a guy named Richard Donner you also may not have heard of. And I think they just kind of assumed oh, well people will have that level of knowledge and affection and familarity with Supergirl and that's just not true But they also established her as being very, very, very different from Superman. I love her of the Superman where she just comes in. Yeah. And it's like a totally different energy from the rest of that movie Yeah and it's a different energy and it's a cool that's cool. It's nice have like a contrast, right? Yeahrast It's not just like, oh, a female version of Superman. Yeah. It' It's a real contrast. And I think that could work and does work for the most part. It's just like Well, if If what I know, which is Superman is This is different from that And then we're also in this wild wacky context. It just feels like it felt like too much noise Ding your hardware, your thoughts on super Girl I feel like I'm just aligning right with you, Jeff. Like I like this movie just fine. I think there's a lot of great stuff in here. Milly Alcock is great. the visuals are great. This is not Craig Gillespie would not be my first choice to make a movie like this, but as a as a director, like he's done He's always been very energetic with his visuals. I really liked his Fright night remake, which I think we reviewed way back when Yeah. I movie. That was a fun movie. Ionia. L like his dramas tend to be visually over crranked in a way. that's like, yeah, this guy should just do an action movie. I think there's some of that, but This movie also feels like something that's been like torn apart by studio notes in many ways. likeike it's very confusing. Why is Lobo in this movie? Lobo is in this movie, a character who I only remember as being a parody character in the nineties and now still in this movie And he's still a par but it's also like, We're trying to tell a somewhat grounded story about Supergirl and Lobo' here being the pooucy of this movie. Like it is at all timees the other characters should be asking, what is whereere iss Lobo? What's loo? He doesn't make any sense in this movie. You know, Mamo's fine. Mamo' like has a lot of fun here character doesn't make any dramatic sense. It feels like there are a lot of like decisions around this movie that just don't make sense, right? We don't know who Supergirl is. so they start to like give us a background and give us her sense of trauma. And I think the best part of this movie is a flashback we get to to home planet two crypto And a lot of that stuff is cool. The visuals of kind of what's happens there is cool. We'll talk about more of that in spoilers. I think David Kremoltz. Frein David Kremoldz gives like performance of the film because he's kind of heartbreaking in this U But also this movie feels very, very confused because there's an ongoing sense of it's also very true grit You know, it's about a young girl whose family is killed and she's out seeking revenge. She seeks the helpess super girl Ver trrue grit in that sense. And Supergirl is very is always trying to be almost u her moral angle is like you shouldn't seek revenge. It's bad. And we'll talk about this in spoilers, but I think the movie has no idea what the hell it's talking about. They at least what it's trying to do hundred percent mudle. hundred percent agreed, Davinra, one hundred percent. So that like moral line doesn't make sense Why Why does Supergirl feel the way she does is like a thing that's kind of explored, but also I would like more background there. L I just like more time with her and more time with how she's feeling. And I just feel like we don't quite get that in this movie. So by the end, I think the first two acts of this movie are really good. introducing this world, seeing her character, seeing her in the alien places, even if things seem Congress Why are they singing the girl from Epineema? You know, why why is music from Earth apparently a mainstay around the galaxy in Guardians of the galaxy? That was established because they were coming from the tapes. Right Yeah That was established H it's just like They're out there. Everyone's just listening to the same music and that's sort of stuff where it feels like you just didn't really think about how you're building this world, I think kind of grated at me a little bit. orr the the joke is more important than the, you know, the world buildilding the world buildilding. And those songs meant something too because they're a remembrance of the character from Earth, like in Guardians of Galaxy. they mean something. R. Here, it's just like a whole lot of references, a whole lot of things that just have no like real tonal impact I like the first two acts of this movie quite a bit. I think the ending, I just my eyes glazed over because I just did not I did not care about anything happening here. And it's a shame because like I feel like they have all the great pieces to make a genuinely great movie It's just it feels like this is from a second or third phase of the MCU type of thing where you don't quite know what you're doing and it's really sad to see this being the second film of the gun DCierra. This does feel like a Marvel phhase two. you know, it feels like I would say in my opinion, quality wise, it feels like a middling Marvel phase two film. That's how I would describe it I actually align a lot with Dinder Hardar, which is not something I say very often on this podcast, but like yeah I kind of agree completely. The first two thirds I really enjoyed. Millie Alcockx great in the movie. U And I really liked the take as you said, Jeff, of what They they have her doing. She's not the same as Superman, but also She comes in at the end of the Super Ban film, right? Very mild spoilers for that film as kind of this drunk person who doesn't really know kind of a mess. kind of a call a bitch too? Like she she's she's like something, something. Right, right, right. She calls him that, right That's right. Yeah Yeah. And And so she's kind of this crass rude doesn't know what she's doing. And then what I think is so wonderful about what this movie does is it it gives her a reason to be that way, right? It gives her a very reasonable explanation why she behaves in this fashion, why she decides to inebriate herself all the time and forget about making a new home. And by the way, as somebody who just spent a significant amount of time in another country like I really appreciated this idea of how lonely and isolating and alienating it can be when you are in a place that you aren't familiar with And I thought the movie did such a great job of all those things And all that stuff happens in the first two thirds of the movie, right? Like the sort of background, the flashbacks, all the supergirl backstory In the first two thirds of the movie, I thought were great Uh And so I was like, oh, wow, I don't know why people don't like this movie. What's like I don't know why this movie has suchuch poor ratings. And then we get to the final act of the film And I do think that it was pretty lackluster. I don't agree with Jeff Kona. I thought the final third the final act was kind of a disaster for a variety of reasons The action is okay. A lot of people are complaining about how like visually and editing wise, it's incomprehensible. I didn't have that much of a problem with it, but I do think that the ultimate climactic moments of the film make absolutely no sense. We'll talk about that in spoilers Uh and And also by the way, the villain character. in the fil is pretty weak. On the one side, you have Literally one of the most powerful beings in the universe And on the other side Some guy That' That is some guy who like he loves a snack. He loves a little snack every once in a while. Yeah. That is the that is the sort of dichotomy in what this is like a being of immense unimaginable power and then some dude. And the idea that like The movies making them out to be like somewhat on equal footing is very ludicrous me. Well, there are a lot of conient convenient plot elements thates I hated that. I hated all of that Yeah. abbsolutely, absolutely. So D you see all the shit in his face though? He look pie. He wass like, is that pie? He does look. That was the most relatable moment of the whole movie, Totally, Totally. That pie looks delicious All right folks, let's get the spoilers. Spoilers for Supergirl starting right now I thought up an ending for my book. It makes no damn sense. Compels me though. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. When I buy a new book, I always read the last page first. That way in case I died before I finish, I know how it end. You can't handle the truth. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin All right, so on that point A There are as far as we know in this universe Two Kryptonians that exist..' no goddamn sense that he does anything that he does. But for some reason this guy has tonight available Well no, dude, it's worse than that.' So listen, I know you guys were like, o, Jeff thought that third act was great. I was saying the third act set piece. I thought the action sequence was awesome. Even that I think I would dispute, but go ahead. Yeah. Well, fair. Do not conflate that with me thinking the third act makes any damn sense because it doesn't. S I don't like the fact that she kills the dude, which we'll get in a second. The The I got an idea A I know that Kryptonite works against Kryptonians.. One of whom has not been in a movie anywhere in this galaxy except for Earth, which we're not even talking about. The other one is you It's like I've just met you. makes no damn sense. Yeah. He doesn't know who she is or what He's got her all dialed in like understands exactly what her weakness is. then The The big idea is we'll just put you in this cave next to the green sun. sets. We know sets and rises. is it is so classic like ye You'll just be Bye, Mr. Bond. I'll let the lazer do its work. See you later. And when the green sun sets and the yellow sun rises You don't think maybe That would be a problem Also, you think she's toast. you don't want to put her in any kind of situation with a guard with a with a with a cage, any kind of st or I don't know, finish her off. That'd be probably pretty smart. No, what you'll do instead is assume she's dead but you assumed she's dead so much that you decided to wear your tonight wrist shooters Because ye today I need to have my Kryptonite risk shooters on just in case that lady that I know we defeated is not defeated. I can get over how the entire setup for his base, right too put a base on that planet. You have to assume That the Cryptonian is the thing you're worried about, right? That's like paying for like the extra insulation. Okay's like you're building a house, right? It doesn't make any sense. Why would you pay for that That's it's so true. It's literally like it's like it's like if you and I built a house to prevent Dinosaurs from Aacas H dinosaurs are extinct Let's make sure that we spend all this money to make it dinosaur proof Here's my head canon by the way, like my head canon is they didn't know that the sun would impact because it's not a krypt it's not a kryptonite sun. it's some other kind of sun. But it's a green sun Right It's agree re are b which is not another thing, by the way. Heres hereere's my head cananon is they didn't know about it They didn't know that that would impact her that way. and nothing in the movie really contradicts that as far as I can. Well, they they just leave her right in a h. like, Oh, I guess she didn't show up. All right, that's fine. Anyway, whatever the case, I agree with you that there's a lot of problems with how how much he knows her and all that stuff Um I also want to mention, by the way, that this movie is incredibly dark. L and I'm not just talking about lighting wise. I'm talking about There is a child U what they're doing with the children in this movie is incredibly upsetting and the movie does not really address it in any significant way. Well not like we're trying to make a point about this or you know, whatever. that de that dude straight up murders that family Not at the beginning. the labor family Yeah ye. The later family where that like helps her and brs her in the and then betrays her. like when he murders those people in the alley Yeah, so upsetic It is it's really Harsh. I this is really re talk about either. Yeah When we talked about in Superman, how like that one guy is executed and that was like That was tough. It was like, o, that's really dark for of the Superman. This the character meant something by that character that character Superman way worse than that in my opinion. and we haven't even gotten to the ending. Okaykay? So The climactic moment in this film First of all, U there is that needele drop of the middle Which I don't know whether that worked for you guys or not. No. I would say pretty silly. You mean the the slowed down version of u middle, Yeah, is the theiddle Yeah yeah the Jimmy World song. That's right, That's right, That's. Apparently they tried out forty five different songs for that sequence And that was the best one. This is like in the Simpsons when he's like, we had forty five different takes And that was the best one. But must take some time. In the middle, in the middle. like slow it down and it's awesome. E. No matter what it is, slow it down. So the climactic moment is they get this guy D deead to right. He's lying on the ground. He's probably super traumatized And Uh, the The woman that she's with is like, I'm gonna kill kill this guy. And then Supergirl says, no, like the young girl kill the young girl. Yeah, the young girls Sper Girls like, No, like if you kill him, he's gonna to haunt you forever And please don't kill him. This is a terrible idea. And then she's like, okay, fine, I will kill him. And then Supergirl says, Okaykay, now I'm my turn and then my turn. No but Okay, so but don I think you're framing it incorrectly. Okay. In the context of the movie, it's If you kill him, You will become me I'm already me But also what did what has she been going around killing people? That is yeah, I mean, that is not I mean, I agree with you that that's what the movie want is trying to tell you That's what the movie does also I agree it's a bad choice for Yeahie. But I'm telling you that the It's not fair to say that the movie is what the movie is saying is I'm already damaged. Yes. Don't become damaged. Like you don't want to you don't want to put yourself through the things I've already been put through. But what has you been put are going to help make you feel better? It's going to make you feel worse. I'm already feeling worse. I can do it. Has she been out there murdering bad guys? Like we don't We dot The problem is, Jeff that the movie does not adequately build up to that Like I think I think she would be No, I think she at Dave at one point she basically says I don't want you to become me or something like. She says it out No, I get I get that. But like the the plot of the movie in my opinion does not make that choice a particularly like I understand I've read the interviews of the writer and they said like what Supergirl wants to do in that moment is take the trauma upon herself, right? Like that is what she want you don't, I don't want you to have the trauma. I already have the trauma. I will take that ono myself. I don't think the movie supports that all the way up to the moment where she murders the guy Yeah sureure. Yeah that's what we're saying. Don't do this, donon't do it, step away. All of that works for me. I think that's kind of a beautiful thing like agreed. But again, it's also that The thing we see in stories like this all the time where we've just knocked four hundred guys off the spaceship and sent them out, you know, But this guy don't kill this one. D' this guy that is going that is going to damage you horribly forever. Yeah, right? Yeah. The guy the guy that you killed inside the jail cell, like A that guy like he's All the dudes that we everyone that you led up to this point. all the people that I knocked into the already running space engine and made explode Yeah those guys are just flodder by guys dude' name. Yeah, this guy, we somewhat he has a couple of characteristics as far as we understand Yeah He's not just an NPC, right? Yeah. Yeah Yeah. Yeah. So that is a problem. But but I still think it kind of works that like, hey, revenge is not the answer. But then having her actually do the murder. Yeah. didid not work for me at all. Yeah. if wait I want to hear if the previous thing worked for you, then why did the murder itself not work for you Be because none of it works for me, I have to say, but go ahead. Well, because I think you're right. I don't think it was probably properly built to in that. I don't think we see that she's accepting a necessary Right evil ono yourself. I think. and it's not something that she is She She hasn't like grappled with it throughout the movie. She's not like Oh the by the way, I thought Argo and the David Crumomeellll stuff. David Crumwll's looking good, by the way. Loo good And the Argo stuff was like such a cool concept and like ye. That looked amazing and when the ship like goes up into the air, like super cool stuff. I love all that. But like the idea of losing her home and then she's grappling with like, should I kill people You know, I kill people all the time, but it leaves me empty inside. but I kill to feel something. you know, like something like that that would have given me that, you know, like having That juxtaposition between she and Sperman, where it's like, oh my My goodoody two shoes cousin will never kill people I'll do it. But I kill people R exactly as we learn through the movie, like maybe that's not a good position to take, but think she has to do it one last time. Yeah. something like there's many ways to do it, but like I think the movie just got people have been speculating it's been really badly edited. But I also think fundamentally, like let's rewind all the way to the point where she realizes revenge is bad You need to tell us that story. You can't just have her be like I am damaged. I have felt the damage of revenge already. Do not do this child and then she proceeds to do it. but also All we know about her is that she got ejected from Krypton, She lost her family. She's on earth. She's kind of stranded. We don't know anything else that's happened to her other than the fact that she's lonely. So where is this like whole moral stance ofren revenge coming from because it's not like somebody destroyed Krypton and she's like burning with revenge against them or you know, like none of that, I agree with one hundred percent everything you said, like none of that is like set up in the movie, cannot hang the ultimate decision of the movie on that if you have not built up to that It's very I agree with. It's bizarre. it is a bizarre and For this movie It is bizarre. And then Lobo. let's talk about Lobo. Why is Lobo even here? What is going on? I definitely want to talk about loobo. Yeah First of all, it's extraordinary, extraordinary that there is this Ver high profile A list actor to was born looking like Lobo and actually gets to play Lobo. That is an extraordinary there has never been a person more suited to the drawing of a character in the history of time When whoever it was, I wish I knew the creator, whoever it was invented Lobo It is almost like they time traveled and saw Jason Homoa in twenty twenty six and then drew that in the future. There will be a buff man with hair D with It is wild how exactly spot on. So and, you know, the costuming is great. like he looks exactly like Lobo. That said in the nineties Lobo wasn't a character. Yeah. Lobo was a vibe And this movie is authentic to that. This is not a it's completely in line with everything Lobo has traditionally been, which is barely anything. He's just a vibe and the vibe is is fun But there's no character here. But there never was for Lobo. Lobo was always like, we need a Wolverine Can we have a wolverine please? Wolverine is making Marvel so much money. Can we get one of those, please More accurately, we have Wolverine at home money Yeah, one That's probably that's the vibe of this one. Yeah, But yeah, Lobo honestly this feels like a relic of uh, like u like early marvel or sort sort of some of the worst marvel impulses when it's like, hey, we got to We got to have Th go to the cave so we can set up Th Ragnarok. You know, like Hey, we gott to introduce Lobo so that like Lobo can get his own spino movie later. And it's like This is a character that is completely extraneous to this movie. Yeah. You could remove the character and he has no impact on the film whatsoever. Like I suspect it's it's more pressing than even that. It's more like we can't We can't be sure that a woman can support this movie. We got to put a male superhero to hide out I don't think in this movie sort of Yeah. Yeah. I mean, perhaps, but I think it's more like, hey, we want to make a loobo We're trying to like introduce various pendrils of this DC universe And I don't think it works particularly well. Also, by the way putut this out there like Lobo another person that could have killed that guy at the end And it would have probably made more sense. It would have been Morally It would have been completely fine. It's like it would have been amazing. You would have been amazing. It would have She chs away. She turns away. She's like,, I'm not going to do it. She walks away. and she looks back and literally Lobo is loing his head. Yeah What a hilarious Lobo has killed like a Gjillian guys. Like he doesn't matter's whole thing. That's the whole thing. We kind of so this problem with Batman begins, by the way. I don't have to I don't have to kill you But're right, I'm not going to kill you. I don't have to save you And you can have that moral argument there about that, but at least it was an attempt. be to be true to a philosophy, you know I mean it would was at least the end of Batman begins with Eethos. you. It would have made Lobo's presence in the movie have a reason? Yes. It's literally like refuses to kill the guy walks away and Lobo does it. It would have been a hilarious ending. It would have been You know, it would have retroactively made his presence in the movie mean something. It would have worked. It would have been perfect? My reaction would have literally been, o, so that's why you introduced Lobo. know Right Just a wild part to give everybody complete moral grace, I guess, yeah Indeed, Yeah.s it's unfortunate. because I think the movie has a lot of fun stuff. I'm curious, you guys loved all of the wacky space. Like It is wacky space. It's not I love the wacky space stuff. Yeah. It's not like it's not even like guuardians of the galaxy space. It's like truly wacky. We have Seth Rogan as a tiny little guy. We got You know, we got girl from Epineema I like that scene when she's using the teleportation device and fighting the people on the train. that was kind of c. teeleportation device Physics Super awesome. That scene The goofiness of all the The people on the train and the like I felt like that was such a mess. I have to say the creature effects in the movie are really good though. like they they look like they actually use practical effects for a lot of them and that's kind of rare So again, I thought the first two thirds were like pretty solid. you know, pretty solid. So we found out that Lobo watches SpongeBob square pants, I guess? Yes Does he calls thatude squidwardd? The The only culture is Eth culture Yeah, sh out to the gam. Right American Earth culture, for that matter. An American most badass biker dude in the universe sitting around watching SpongeBob square pants. I believe it. tootally believe SpongeBob is awesome. By the way, you introduce a teleportation device ortation device. You have all the powers in the world except your powers turn off when you're not around Yellow sun The teleportation device could be useful in the future. Yeah. Perhaps. Or maybe give it to the girl that you want to give it to the girl. not you all the time We I mean, we haven't even talked about Eve Ridley who plays Ruthy, the young girl who who kind of is Supergirl sidekick. Like what did you think of that character? I thought It' fine, you know, like there's a I really not care. I thought that was thought there was a really funny moment when she starts giving her a speech and then Supergirl startsar the mouthing the spech love with it. That was very funny. But yeah in general, it's like The dynamic between them didn't really work and I guess U Supergirl is supposed to have grown emotionally and spiritually by the end of the film, but like I didn't really feel it sa for dog. That's all it is. Like I feel like like she comes she comes back to Earth And she's like, I'm ready to stay. It's like Why? Why? What I learned? Well I saved crypto and I killed a guy Yeah, ye I'm okay now And that' it could have it could have been like I like have this bond with this girl Yeah who like has also lost everything But like that didn't quite land for me by the end of the film. That's, you know, So. And yeah, she felt like an albatrage hung around this movie's neck. A little bit. She's no Hiley Steinfeld and Truer. And that's kind of what you need that the actor was fine. I' not I'm not criticizing the actor. I just thought functionally ye, she felt like this kind of vestige of a different kind of movie was just kind of stuck in here to give main character, some other thing to protect And I don't know. didn't love it All right Well Uh kindind of disappointing as a film, but not terrible, not like a Like I said, I was just say this is like middling T lower tier Marvel, I would describe it as Yeah, you know, Like Lillily Alcock is so good. Yeah. She's so good ir the dirt Bag persona like drunk dirtag persona at the beginning of the film. I do think it really works. Yeahah Um You know, I was reflecting Jeff on how dizzying it must be to be one of these characters, right? Like I remember when Brandon Ralph was Superman, right? And it's like The studio like put so much like he was on every poster and every you know, and then the movie comes out and it's it didn't do that well. And then then Brandon Ralph, you know, he still acts sometimes, but it's like, he doesn't have this huge career and it's like O day You are on every poster in every piece of advertising space in the country. and then the next week You're gone I think she's going to be fine. I think shes she's a I mean, she's literally talked about almost quitting acting after House of the Dragon because she could't find it again. So like I don't know. I don't know what's gonna happen. I hope she does okay because she's awesome in this movie. She's awesome. But really good. It's just like men Hollywood is a fickle creature, you know, The thing that she does that I don't think people give enough credit to. like she nails all the acting moments. She really sells, you know being drunk, which is a hard thing to do authentically. She sells that, you know, that she's really kind of charming and funny and she's I loved her. But the thing that I was even more impressed with is She hits all of the poses. in each like each beat of the action sequence is it really works just dynamically body movement wise, when she moves from moment to moment, and that is That's not easy to do And I was, I don't know, I came away thinking she's a huge, huge talent I mean she's on shows already. She's on House of the Dragon, right? So N Not anymore. Yeah None anymore. She's in h. I think she'll be okay Yeah Yeah. I hope that all I'm saying is I hope so. That's all I'm saying But but I do not think it is like as assured as you guys think it is Um And the story I was referring to is she talked about how she felt like she had to apply for she applied to work at a bakery after R afterfter House of Dragon because he was like unsure that she would get anymore But we'll see, I hope she becomes a huge star. Certainly this movie shows that she should be. And at the end of the day, it is extremely impressive that Craig Gillespie made A movie And that is going to bring us the end of this' episode of filmcast.
