Michael Holly, six time New York Time bestselling author, journalism professor at Boston University. all lot of these sports writer guys, they end up university professors.' be pretty smart. Michael Holly's joining us So The world thinks Brad Stevens doesn't know what he's doing, and I'm just going to give you my ninety second take on what I think he was thinking Okay. Brad looked at the Denver nuggets in Milwaukee And they held on to Jamal Murray, maybe or Chris Middleton too long. And he said, I'm not going to fight the new CBA wave I'm going to write it We got a title Brown and Tatum are great assets. One of them though is of an injury Brown is a very good asset Analytically You and I'll get into that. I think it's a bit overstated. I know when I watch the game, he looks all NBA to me that Stevens is viewed as crazy toown, and my take is no Milwaukee waited too long. Denver waited too long. His next iteration is got a title Hatum's injured He doesn't have the market now. Brown does I'm going to make the move today Is that a reasonable take to you It's a reasonable take, Colin. except for what he got in returned for what Brass St' got in return. So I would think If that's his perspective, I think it's a little impulsive especially since Brown and Tatum played together for nineteen games last year. nineteen games, regular season and post season. We know Tatum didn't play in game seven. There were some games in the regular season where Tatum came back and Brown didn't play So nineteen games of these guys together. neeither one is thirty years old yet So you probably have another run or two in them before it gets to be too late. But even if he feels that way Why take back Paul George? just don't understand why you take back Paul George and two drap picks, especially if you see what If you believe the reports, what start what the conversation started how they started and how they ended. Hey, we want VJ Hdgecom. We want got to take Paul George w four or five first round picks. Okay, no VJ Hgecom, no Tie Reese Maxy. All right. We'll take Paul George one of the worst contracts in basketball and two first rounders. It's really a puzzling deal for Brad Stevens. Years ago I remember Earon Rogers also goes to cow, and I think Eron's super bright. But I remember a couple people sources inside Green Bay saying Earon could be heavy and moody And Listen, obviously, Jalen Brown, he may be a genius. He's lecturing at Harvard at twenty one He chose Cal over Carolina and Kansas. At twenty two, players voted him vice president of the NBPA to walk into the league at twenty two and the LeBronons of the leeague are like, that's the guy The kids brilliant Aon's Aon similarly You've probably worked with brilliant people. But is it fair to say that Jalen got heavy? You know, the Nike collusion, the this is my favorite year. It's that he got heavy. Tatanum's light Everybody likes him, He's easy to get along with. He's collaborative. Is that perhaps one of the reasons? Colin, you have got to get out of my head. I'm telling you, I just had this conversation where someone A couple of days ago And but making the argument because you're absolutely right. I think Jayen Brown, if you look at it One guy goes to Duke. O guy went to Duke, one guy went to Cal Berkele JaycGrown is so Cal Berkeley that Cal Berkeley should have him on banners. I mean, he is Cal Berkeley, He's counter culture. He is contontrarian you know, I'm going to do it a little differently than what you'd expect in And Jason Tatum is blue blood corporate, mainstream, duke. So they are that. I'll tell you Conlin, I'll tell you like two personal interactions with both of them I've had in the last year or two, it kind of speaks to who they are So Jalen Brown, there was a There was a conference in Boston on the racial inequality gap. had nothing to do with sports. Jayalen Brown was one of the keynote speakers. I had to moderate the conversation with Jaylen Brown about fifteen minutes before the event started, they have all these questions that would I didn't have the answers to. So I said, okay, I'm going to sit down with Jalen and kind of give him Hey, here's number four. if you want to start thinking about it We talked for about thirty seconds. He said, don't worry about it. I got it. You do And he did. He was great. I mean, these are the things that are on his mind. These yes, these heavy things, these worldly things. Now Jason Tatum When Bill Simmons said his Celtic City documentary on HBO And Ja Brown left early. He was there for the meet and greet, but he left early Tatum was there the entire time just trained on the entire thing. He wants to be Larry Bird. He wants to be that guy. He thinks about hoop all the time. So They're completely different, but this is where I push back on people who say, oh yeah, they're so different. they are There's no question about it. There's no arguing that B They work together very well. There are no issues even though They're so different. It's like Collagues in your building, colleagues in my building, Well, we do well together on the show But there are people I've worked with for eight years, ten years who've never been to my house and I've never been to theirs and it's fine, you know. So you know Michael in our business I mean, you're very accomplished. Six time New York Time best sellinguth. I'm not sure if I've read six New York Times best selling authors. You've written. Thanks, Colin. Thank you. I got copies for you right. But I'll say this. I remember years ago U When I went to FS one, I was asked by a member of the management about he came with a list of people to hire. We were forming the network And I was like, you know, I can remember people. I was like, you know, one of them was, you know, Shannon Sharp. I'm like, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah. And then they got to one person and I said Not a great hang, but brilliant I said, not really a collaborative guy And I think It's not it's not a criticism, but they're I mean, I think Jayen Brown may be the NBA's intellect And he's going to push back. And I always feel like the Celtics with Stevens are a collaborative formula. The Nicks weren't a formula. They tweaked it during the Atlanta series I kind of feel like if you don't go in line with their three point parade And kind of the way they view the world analytically, and I could argue, Brown isn't a great analytics guy Is that' fair? The analytics don't measure Yeah, analytics don't measure up. And and it's interesting that when I think about Jalen Brown over the ten years that he was in Boston, a few things stand out to me And One of them was in the twenty twenty four NBA finals where he determines I gota check Luca at certain times in the game. He took it personally It was a point of pride for him to take on Luca. And so Jalen A lot of times it's the chip on the shoulder. it's personal. it's real enemies. It's imagined enemies. It's that fire. He was the fire of the Celtics For that twenty four teams, that team no longer have Marcus Smart. Marcus Smart used to have that role Now Jalen Brown was at Analytics doesn't respect that. And I don't think anybody in the analytics community would say, Ohh, yes, have a we have a metric for that. No, you don't. And so that's That was kind of the brand for Jayalen Brown. It's the fire. It's some of the it's how he practices. It's what he talks to his players and his teammates about before the game So those are the things that stand out. and I know at times it doesn't look good analytically. I think that's fair to say U I defended Jerry Jones when he traded Micah. I said he's a deal maker. He was an oil maverick And trading Mica gives him as an entrepreneur flexibility I would argue that what trading tatum or brown Now he chose to trade the guy Brown who's coming off a great year, his best And he's healthy. Tatum's not. So if you did tryade Tatum, you would not get You wouldn't get the great number Payem Paul George, Derek White, Payton Richard, Mitchell Robinson And now reportedly, they could go get Trey Murphy. And my take is Brad Stevens wanted Jerry Jones. He just wanted flexibility And Tatum and Brown both limited a really good GM's flexibility. Is it just as simple as that Yeah, it could be. it could be. And he is say despite what people think of Brad Steams mean think about what his perception was as a head coach. You just sit there and you kind of placid at times and he's not going to take a lot of risks, but he is a risk taker. he's been that since he was promoted to this president of basketball operations job. So he does He like you're right. He likes to make these deals. I guess my only issue is I keep getting stuck Cin on Paul George So Paul George Yeah. the reality the reality of Paul George doesn't match the concept of Paul George and he's the same size as Jalen and he's a better of he's more efficient scorer on the wing. It's just, is he gonna to be available? He's thirty six He's had a number of issues The last five, six, seven years Is he going to be available when you really need him? And if he is, you're right If he is, we'll be talking this time next year. say look, everybody thought Brad Stevens was an idiot and look at this He got he got Paul George to play out of his mind and they were in the NBA finals They they won the NBA Championship. I just I just don't think that's gonna happen. and Just watching this deal from Steven is He is the A student. It's like the A student who comes home with like a seventy one and you're like, What happened? What How did this happen to you? I just can't believe the Brad team has made this deal I know, I'm probably giving Brad Stehvens so much credit because You know, there are people like this. It's like for years in where you're at now in Belacheck we trust. And then he hires Matt Patrician. I'm like, I know that's not right. I don't care what anybody says. That's dumb. That's a dumb move. So Brilliant people do unwise things like that Yeah, I know, here's the Paul George theory I have And for our radio audience, Michael Haley is joining us. NBC Boston, Professor Boston University, New York Times, six ofven B bestsellers Is that u Jayen Brown has three years left, about one hundred eighty million, and in three weeks He's eligible for an extension Paul George has two years left, meaning I can trade him at next year's trade deadline. that this really is This is really stomach it until the trade deadline But Brad will be looking October November, December January, February. I think this is really mostly about I can't get out of this Jalen Brown deal And I'm capped out I can get out of Paul George in a year Make sense? Yeahah Yeah, it does make sense. I wonder and all it all comes down to if George is available And if he's playing at a high level, yeah, you'll be able to move that contract. L Colin, I'll tell you in the in the first round Now I was shock. I probably I broke all the rules of, hey, you know, let's just be professional in the press box Game, game one, game two. of the Six Ster Celtic series Paul George is making shots and I'm cutsting up a storm. What What is that Paul George Poulllow George against the Celtics in that series was great I think he made about half of his threes. Yeah. he sh fifty five Yeah, fifty five percent. He was. He was great. He was great took Jayen Brown off the dribble. I mean, he really was a problem for the Celtics. It's not like they were leaving them wide open. They were trying to stop them. they couldn't. If you can get That version of Paul George for A season D didn't get a season a season and a half like that from Paul George. Yeah, you'll be able to trade him I think Philadelphia is ecstatic though to get rid of that contract. And so you go younger, you have who Paul George was in his prime, essentially and Jayalen Brown, a little more grit, a little bit more rugged play And you add that to BJ Edgecom in year two and Tyrese Maxy and MV any form of NB because if MB is not available to play, think about the three guys I mentioned. you've got Edgecom you' got Bown, you got Maxi, you got a really good team. So I think Philadelphia, it's a great day to be a sixixers fan. I'll say that You'll flourish. No question. Are you in your college? Is that your house or are you at school right now This This is my house and you wouldn't know what school looks like becausecause you have not come to class yet. It's funny, I took my son in May. He wanted to see Northwestern. I'm like, you're not going to believe. And Northwestern's great at everything, but there's a lot of You know, Will Bond, Greeny. I think a lot of guys have broadcasters have gone to Northwestern I didn't have the grades, but it was you walking around that It's like I mean, you know, you ever walked around a place and you're like I don't think I'd fit here If I don't think I was very directional schools love me I'll leave it U, All right, In Chago's the herd Be sure to catch live editions of the Hed weeekdays in Non Eastern nine AM Pacific.y It's me, Rob Parker. No know, I'm seeing people criticize country roads. like they' like how is this nobody country roads Folks Certain music works at certain times. Country roads in a stadium when it's very patriotic or a big college football game. it touches you. I don't know what to say. I don't know anybody that listened to John Denver. I really don't. Nothing against him. My wife got me into country music probably ten years ago I've got friends who love it Um It just works. I'm not saying it's the best But I mean, for a long time was didnn't we everybody like who let the dogs out? I mean, I, that's not that wasn't that gigantic for like twenty years. Like certain times, certain songs They work Country roads, it works I of you told me in twenty twenty six, John Denver We'll touch America I'd have been like, noah, it's not I don't see that coming. But it kind of works for me. J Mac with the news No, no turn on the news. Heardline Ns. All right, let's get started, Colin. Have you heard the latest? Aaron Donald is thirty five years old and working out hard, grinding away at a potential comeback. Here he is. interesterestingly posting videos Of him doing, I guess that's called light work, according to the kids K I don't know what to say. He's just gonna keep doing this all summer as I like to say, stay ready I mean, he looks like he could probably eat next to Miles Garre, right Yeah, I mean, you know, rememember when Cam Newton was releasing workout videos and my take at the time was, Cam wants those out ' camaas like E and still funny I mean Kepernick for years, he would show you the videos. Hey, I'm out here. I think Aaron Donald, I think this is intentional. Certainly, yeah I mean, I think Aaron Donald is the strongest NFL player since Reggie White. And Larry All. Larry Allen, Reggie White Aaron Donnell. I think he's always a guy that if you said, can you get in NFL shape Aaron Donald stays in good enough shape that if you told him, hey man. Four weeks. Yeah. fourour to six weeks. Can you get in great shape? I think Aron Donald I think pro athletes, I couldn't do that, but Aaron proro athletes can do that. He retired at thirty two. The guy retired young. Yeah, get him on some Peptides. J justust kiding I'm not endorsing peeptides. I know everybody's doing them. Anyways, let's move to Jaylen Brown in the NBA Coin just because his story is bonkers There is a fascinating quote circulating right now and an NBA GM trashed the trade saying, this is highway robbery. No idea what Brad Stevens is thinking And then quote, the Celtics will be lucky to get in the play in next year. Who whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. R. C on, give me a break. Tatum, Paul George was great last time we saw him in the playoff series. Hayem, Derek White, Brown, Mitchell Robbertson, Payton Prichchard. We think an above average coach workable bench and a formula. againgain, Jalen's going to be great in Philadelphia. He's going He's going to eat in Philadelphia. He's a great player. And I think he'll just sometimes you need to refresh. you need to reboook how many people watching this show He didn't like a boss. He didn't like just it just doesn't quite it gets it gets thick. It gets layered. You leave and you're like a new employee. Jaylen Brown's going to be unbelievable. And he was unbelievable in Boston But when you start leaking stuff about Derek White had a better season, he wore some people out and it's probably best they divorce is probably best for both parties. The one argument I'll say is the Indiana Pacers are coming. That is obvious. They're going to be very, very good. The Kicks are coming off a title. I don't know if they regress, But has anyone else in the East gotten better? I guess Miami got honest I don't think it's a huge move, but that's two teams that got o. Co why Leonard going to Toronto. So you could argue that's three teams. Well, the East will be better this year than last, no question I listen, I think Philadelphia won the trade. I'm not saying that. but this idea that it's like the Lakers overpaid for Walker Kessler. The Lakers added you three point shooting and got big. They needed all three. Paul George is a great player. He's going be a haall of Famer. Yeah. Now, now what I love Paul three years ago, but he's been banged up. He plays hard, he plays both in. Paul gets banged up. So it I mean, Derek White, Derek White on this team will be a three to a four Anyt timee Derek White last year, there were days, he was the two.. I think that's a little much. So I think Derek's going to slot into the three, some nights the four. if they got Trey Murphy It can absolutely within me. So last point on this, somebody was trying to point out that, hey, remember when Jayen Brunson left Luca and he took off Peyton Pritcher not having to play with Jayalen Brown. Peyton Pritchard iss going to take off like a comment Mbe. It's possible. Final story Kon, let's go to mister Balligan' celebration on his goal yesterday. I don't know if you saw this. He hit the LeBronze silencer Pretty good shout out to the king. There's Ballagan doing it. of course, LeBron saw this online and you know, he was very happy. I mean, heck, if he's doing your celebration, that's pretty damn. Don't you love these players? The gratitude, the humility, the toughness. last night was so impressive. Yeah, there's the LeBron tweet. Now let me squeeze in country Rads. I will say I don't know where this song came from. I don't know what the connection is. I mean West Virginia, they're not hosting World Cup games. I'm missing out on something there That the song you're right. It is kind of catchy. It does kind of work I mean, I think a lot of songs would work there But do you know like, what's the origin of this? I could not find that online Who picked that song? Wasn't there a hootie in the blowfish song that like they had a lot of bangers. I mean there' certain bands, they just, it works in with sports. Kenny Chesney I mean, there's just certain guys that a lot of athletes or the sound just works. W sports and you know J just for the record, Who let the Dogs out works in every setting on the planet? Whether it's weddings with a car and you're going up to the drive through blasting in a taco bell. Who let the dogs out? Everybody knows that song. It works everywhere, Colin, J just for the record When I was a kid and growing up in the Northwest, the Huskies Tequila Remember the song Tequila? Dana dana That was literally like that was literally like the fight. Gotcha. All right, Jay Mack with the newews. That's the news. And thanks for stopping by. The Hed Le News. He's saying what I'm saying Jayen Brown got salary dumped And I think they looked at Tatum was coming off an injury. Brown was healthier off his best year. We don't want to get stuck with that salary with a new CBA. It's a salary dump Marcella Balboa, the Iron Man, one hundred and twenty eight appearances, thirteen goals twice our player of the year in a haall of Famer. Dender and the captain previously for the US men's national team is now joining us And all right. I just I'm just going to ask you, I thought going from no yellow card initially Yeah to a suspension is like jumping over the Grand Canyon. It's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa How did sit with you I didn't sit well because The guy on the field made the call. He didn't break out a yellow card. He called a foul. Then Var got involved. Var from two thousand miles away got involved, told the refere to go look at it. And when you look at a still shot, you can find the worst angle possible. And that's what they did. Everybody keeps saying, yeah, it's a foul. Yeah, it's a foul. No doubt, but there was no malice, there was no intent. was They were both going for the ball And he stepped on them. So I'm a little disappointed that there's been a few other tackles, we'll say in this World Cup. that were similar. They were never given a red card or a yellow card Marcelo when VAR was created, I thought it was created for offsides and goals. Yes, no. I didn't think it was created for this, which is how intense was that tackle? How do soccer guys view it Listen, I think if you're American fans, you're thinking it's not a red card. If you're the Bosnian fans, you're thinking it's a red card. You can look at it either way, but we've been listening to a lot of we'll just say proper officials
