Welcome back to another episode of the Mack Rumor Show. I am Dan, Hartley, good afternoon How's it going? Have you been on the betas for the last week or so 've been on some of the basers, so I have IOS twenty seven installed on my iPhone iPad OS twenty seven on my iPad But I haven't been brave enough yet to put it on my Mac because of course I use that for my work, it's essential to me. So I'm not brave enough to run it on my Mac and I would run it on my Apple Watch Bot My Apple Watch doesn't support W O S twenty seven So for an upgrade I mean, it will be this year and I would have kept my watch, but Apple's forced my hand here. So this has been pretty. Do you think this is a reason to get people to upgrade on these like really, you know, minuscule year over year hardware changes? They're like, well, now you kind of want Siri AI because I will say Siri AI on the watch actually kind of makes even more useful in my opinion because now you can have the full landscape of what Siri can do, which I am really enjoying my time with. I don't know about you, but I think it's really good. Um, and it's perfect for my AI needs. Maybe some other people might want something a little more powerful, but like I think for what I want, It's been great. And so now being able to have that on your watch I don't know how much more I'll use it, but it's nice to have What I will say about Watch OS twenty seven support is that there is a lot of truth behind the fact that the S nine chip a newer is a lot more powerful than the chips that came before. And of course, we know that a lot of Apple intntelligence does run on device. Apple's talked a lot about that. So it follows that you need a more powerful hardware to run that The way in which I don't buy that is of course, IOS twenty seven support supports plenty of iPhones that don't support Siri AI. but you still get the latest software otherwise So there's no reason in my mind why they couldn't release a version of WOS twenty seven that doesn't have support for Apple intntelligence and you don't get the SirA app. just like on everything else. So I can't help but think that that is drive upgrades, I'm pretty cynical about the Apple watchatch because The Apple watchatches had been such a stagnant Prouct category in recent years, I would argue even more so Re than the iPad with the sort of scale of changes that we have been seeing And I think that reallyally when you buy an Apple Watch, it is a little bit more like an iPad in that you can just keep that thing until it stops working There are very few features where you really feel compelled to upgrade unless it is a major health feature, but we haven't had what could be considered a major breakthrough health feature on the Apple Watch for many years now Um, and I currently have an Apple Watch series eight I have no desire really to upgrade. And I know I would get a slightly larger display there would be some refinements to the design. It would be faster. I don't know how much I really care about that. It still letting me close my activity rings, tracks my sleep gives me my notifications. It does everything just as a series seven or a series six will continue to do right now This I mean, I actually think this is pretty unprecedented for Apple to cut off this many models. I don't remember the last time Apple has done this. Normally, we're used to Apple products getting F, seven years of support This means that you could have bought an Apple Watch Ultra, the first generation Apple Watch Ultra What would that have been three or four years ago I And now That's it. no more support For something that was marketed as a high end Yeah. so officially it drops series six, seven eight, ultra one and SE two which is a lot of devices like you're saying. And also I guess we should talk about the rest of the platforms compatibilities. So IOS twenty seven supports every device that ran IOS twenty six. so that's iPhone eleven. and SE two U That's the widest compatibility ever. So on the flip side, it's like we've got a whole range of devices there, which is good. I mean, you know, an Apple Watch is lot cheaper than you know, an iPhone, so at least people aren't having to go out there. But yeah, I do kind of agree that is kind of ridiculous that an ultra can't even maintain, which I'm in a Cl. And it just wasn't that long ago. L if you were someone who'd saved up to buy an Apple Watch Ultra, you love that device And now it's just hit the end of the road within a few years That feels pretty unheard of in Apple's ecosystem. I would even argue an SE two, and I know it's an inexpensive device, but it wasn't so long ago that you could buy an Apple Watch SE two. I mean, before September last year Apple still sold that device. So you could have bought that in August last year now I mean it's not like these devices aren't going to run. so they can maybe squeeze out another year or so on just being on continue to get security updates, but it definitely is a departure from the expectation that Apple is set. and there does seem to be a re prettyty striking contrast between IOS twenty seven that supports The iPhone eleven from twenty nineteen. And yet with the watch. We're just cutting off like five years of software support in oneo, what is it? I think four years worth of software support Yeah, which is Pretty incredible Yeah, I'm kind of calling a little bit a Bush leeague there for some of these, but we should get to Maco E Taho really just supports Apple Silicon Max The intnel Mac is a fidly risingy Yeah. He knew that that was coming. It's now been getting on for six years That feels like an appropriate amount of time. and I understand those security upgrades Iagine it probably will for the next year. Usually Apple continues to get provide security updates for about a year. Occasionally, it does go back and release software way earlier if there is a major security issue, but it is unusual And of course, this does make things easier for developers. We are expecting Rosza to to be phased out now and that will also be gone as of macOS twenty eight next year. So then really all of the Intel architecture really will be a thing of the past So that isn't so surprising. I think TVOS is a little bit surprising That drops support for the Apple TV HD and the first generation Apple TV I mean, that was eleven years old and eight years old. Maybe the first four K version, you're kind of like, what has changed really? Like what has dramatically changed from that one to now? probablyrobably not a whole lot that people would truly care about Apple TV the twenty fifteen one, I think I understand Current Apple TV is four years old likeike it's this is a product that already is on on a very large time frame. So it's interesting to me that an Apple TV for in twenty seventeen is now not acceptable, but an Apple TV from twenty twenty two is fine U Are you convinced we're just never getting understand? You know again at this point I understand it's because of the chips that these devices have, but the Apple TV doesn't have Apple intntelligence. What is it that it was able to feature U The update last year, I know we didn't get liquid glass, the older models, but I mean what new features really are there on TVOS that are so integral that we can't continue to support those devices? And Apple TV is not a device that you regularly upgrade. You keep it and probably keep it for for many, many years Nally, people there are people out there using an Apple TB twenty fifteen and it's still going strong eleven years later I truly hope that we do get N Syri and Apple intelligence on on the Apple TV and they're just saving it for this home event, you know? Uh, but because that that would be a real bummer if that all just doesn't happen until maybe next year or at all. but Real quick, before we cut into a break, iPad OS twenty seven hang hang in there with me because this is kind of a lot. drops the fifth gen iPad mini, eighth gen iPad, thirird gen iPad air, first gen eleven inch iPad Pro Third gen twelve point nine inch iPad pro So another way of understanding that is these are the twenty eighteen iPad pros, the first one is going to be so redesigned. the design that pretty much has persisted to today getting rid of Those are probably still pretty good And they have been fantastic. So I don't think it's surprising that they're going. I mean Um been around now for eight years. That's pretty good for iPad support and some of these other devices like the thirird Gen iPad ear, that's an older device with a home button get the iPad Air all on that that new design as well So yeah, that doesn't really surprise me. I think that probably sounds more or less about right All right, so those are all of the platform like compatibilities for the devices. So if you didn't hear any of yours kind of on this list, then you're probably good and you're going to get all the latest updates We'll get into some of the design and system changes because we're in this episode, by the way, if you haven't understood by now, we talked a lot about WWDC, obviously last week when it happened and we talked through a lot of the major changes Now we're going to talk about all of the things that we didn't get a chance to. and there's quite a lot of new things here. So before we get into all of that though, let's just take a quick minute to hear from today's sponsor So one of the biggest parts of my job is researching upcoming Apple products, digging through rumors, comparing reports, and just trying to spot patterns before anyone else does. Normally that means bouncing between a dozen tabs, articles, and notes. Lately, I've been using Claud as a research partner, and it's honestly changed the way I work. Instead of just giving me quick answers, it helps me connect information across sources, organize my thoughts, and get to conclusions much faster. Claud is the AI for minds that don't stop at good enough. It's the collaborator that actually understands your entire workflow and thinks with you. Whether you're debugging code at midnight or strategizing your next business move, Claud extends your thinking to tackle the problems that matter. What I found especially useful is deep research. It can pull together information from dozens of sources, site where it's finding things, and help me uncover connections I probably would have missed on my own It feels less like a chat bot and more like really having a smart research assistant available whenever I need it. And honestly, it helps me a ton when doing scripts and just getting prepped for the pod. For problems worth solving, get started with cllaud at claud. ai slash mac That's claud d. Ai slash max And check out Claud Pro, which includes access to all of the features mentioned in today's episode That's cllaud d. Ai slash map Thanks, Clae for sponsoring this episode. Okay, so some of the design and system changes that we didn't get to last week I feel like Apple did talk a lot about like, oh, here's all of the new liquid glass stuff, especially with like macOS and stuff like that. And like the way notifications come in. like, I don't know. Are these worth mentioning? These are just some things that I don't know that I'd honestly have noticed. If Apple didn't mention any of the stuff, I would I don't know that I wouldd have noticed it. A lot of people are very angry about the notification U new animation where it on the edg just fone the left, it doesn't bother me personally. I actually think it's helpful to kind of retrain people. There are now three gestures at the top of the display I don't know if it's just a Maybe it's just I don't like the animation. and it could be, you know, we have to clarify Th these are all betas. So a lot of things are subject to change. If we complain enough about it, Apple might might very well get rid of that and move back to the way it was but I just don't know if it's just the animation or if it's the combination of like both the beta and the animation, but I feel like it's just not very smooth Like it almost has like a little bit of a stutter lag behind it. I just don't know if my device is not able to handle that animation properly, but I really don't like the way it looks coming in from the left. And again, it could just be because the animation doesn't feel smooth to me Um And it's just weird. Maybe I just need to get used to it, but yeah, I'm not a fan of it, but I don't think I'm gonna Where could you set your liquid glass level on the slider All the way left, baby ultra clear I've been playing around with it and I go some days I go completely clear, some days I go almost completely opaque. Oh so I really do quite like the the frosted look But I really like that we have the choice now. I feel like probably my favorite subtle design change is actually the revised icons because I was one of these people that did not like this sort of blurry look. of the Is items they existed before, but now there's just that extra bit of contrast. they really seem to pop. And they seem to actually sort of take a step back in a way while using more liquid glass. so they have the sort of crispness and saturation that we were used to from the previous icons But with actually it's achieved that through more layers of liquid glass rather than just using a kind of overlay So I think they look fantastic. I really like the refinements to liquid glass across the system that the level of contrast, it's so much easier to see I feel like perfectly refined more so than I actually had expected You know what? just for you and because I'm feeling more of an opaque mood today, I'm gonna to go full blown. I don't know if you guys can see this. I'm going full blown the other way So We'll see how this goes. I don't there should be like an easier way to get to it though. I don't want to have to go into settings Is they there like a control centor say ye. Yeah. I think that's what we need. You could probably ask You could probably just make a shortcut You know, half the day you want to go clear or I don't know. There's there's got to be a way you can do it Um, By the way Is that in here? I haven't fully looked in like all the shortcut stuff I don't want to like go off script too much here, but like have you had a chance to mess around with making a shortcut Yeah, so it handles simpler shortcuts really well to me But it is actually ultimately still limited by app intents and the things that Shortcuts could do before. while it's very handy for constructing those shortcuts in the first place There are still things that I want it to do that it can't do, but the actual system of generating them with natural language is excellent. I was going to say, like so I tried it out for a video when we did a hands on for the iPad. And I wanted to try the new iPad specific one. So like when you attach a keyboard as is a new automation So I just said in plain language, like make me A shortcut so that whenever I attach my iPad to the keyboard, it goes into the Windowed apps mode And then when I take it out, of the keyboard, I wanted to go back to full screen mode. So if I'm holding the iPad, I would want it I'd rather it be in the full screen like a normal iPad and it Understood. I saw the shortcut, listed out everything that I was going to do. I'm like, cool, that was perfect. Actually the first time it said switch to stage manager, but I corrected it and it perfectly went to Windowed apps It's just, you know, again, it's a beta. I think it just struggled a little bit to like understand the full screen apps perspective Be when I would put it on the If I was in full screen apps mode and I hooked onto the keyboard, it did switch to windowed mode and it remembered where all the windows were and it was perfect when I took it off, it just didn't it just didn't want to switch back or at least it was inconsistent in that. Like I think it happened once. you know, it's a it's a beta. We're getting there. I like the idea. I like that it I was just impressed in the fact that it understood exactly what I wanted and that if it didn't understand I could just revise it really quickly and then it picks up on it Um, so yeah, I mean, those were kind of the nice things about shortcuts, but let's get back to the u the changes here, the colorful sidebar icons. I think those are so I don't know. they're so miniscule in my opinion. like especially Apple showcase this or like look at these icons and I'm like, what what changed? thatid I miss it I guess they're a little bit more like bold In colorful, I don'till. Have you tried the extra large widgets No, I didn't even realize that was the thing until we were going through the so plan. Now there is this new widget size that takes up effectively the whole iPhone green. That's kind of cool. O course One might wonder why would they introduce such a thing? But of course know you're about to get an iPhone that will have a display that is twice as large, and it would make sense to have a large vertical widget on that display. So just another little hint toward the foldable iPhone, I think there Yeah, this is cool. I just put the music widget on full screen, that would be nice. L if you have a phone that say has multiple displays or a wider one when you open it up. U I think one side would be cool to have like a full music widget or a couple other things and then Maybe some apps. I like that The other hint was when they were talking about how you can easily switch between different sizes, screen sizes at the keyote. I'm like, oh, And I think I mentioned this Last week's episode, Apple's PR just kind of looked at me. and I was like, whoops, whoops shouldhn't say anything Well I mean, they're the ones that are hinting at it so so clearly.' not going to I mean were there were even references in code strings to devices with multiple displays U it's all in there now. I mean, we all know this thing is happening I mean, I would be absolutely shocked with how many leaks we have, how many rumors there are, all of these hints in the code If it doesn't drop, it's not because it doesn't exist. It's not because we are wrong. It's because something happened terribly but I think we're this is coming. There's no there's no way this thing is not going to last here I can't wait. Is there anything else in the design that you want to mention before we move on to some of the Ci AI stuff that we didn't get a chance to talk about I don't think so. and actually they are related because of course, Siri does have this new design Yeah How do you like think swiping down? I do like it. I still find that I'm not used to doing it U just yet I really do like this new look with the sort of fade from black to clear I do think one of the more interesting rumors which I don't know if you've seen is on every device, Siri is circular when you use it with voice, not when you type to it, but when you use it with voice, whether that's the iPad, the Vision Pro, the Mac. U But not on the iPhone, because on the iPhone it emerges from the dynamic island, so it's a pill shape Yeah. but If the dynamic island was just a little bit slimmer Just that tiny bit narrower then Siri would become a perfect circle, which of course builds perfectly and sw we' expecting from the iPhone eighteen P later this year will have a narrower dynamic island. So just another another little h in there So For me, nothing's really changed from like a home screen perspective to get to Siri because it's still the same thing that I normally do. swippe down from the middle, of anywhere on the home screen. Just swiping down brings up like the spotlight and Siri kind of interaction U But I keep forgetting that you can get to Siri now doing that swipe in any app, but you've got to go all the way to the top screen. Like I still keep forgetting that that's a thing which is fine because if I want to get to Siri specifically I would just use the side button when I'm in kind of one of those things. Yeah, I tend to use the side button, but it's just a habit Ill also add in and maybe it's just a bug, but the lack of auto correct when typing to Siri is really pissing me off. I'm not gonna lie It just does not autocorrect. I don't there should never be a text Some area in the entire UI that you can type into where auto correct is not a thing Why or like the suggestions not, none of that pops up. Is that just a bug or is that deliberate? I mean, it's early in the cycle. so it's hard I know Sies is capable of understanding if I mess up. It doesn't really matter. It's just like all the other chat bots. it knows. Have you noticed that it also corrects or like asks for clarification ' that ises pretty cool. And I found that with music for the first time, which has been a really simple change. It' very useful, where I ask for a song And it will say to me, didid you mean by this artist or this artist or another one And then I can actually respond to it and it understands rather than it doing what Siri always did which is just make the assumption and play the song But now it actually has that extra step, which which is perfect, really. That's exactly what you wanted to do if there's any uncertainty I agree. Mine was when I was asking it in my example for the video, I showed off a script and I said, okay, now make me like a sixty second like YouTube short Instagram version of my script. justust narrow it down And it's like, did you mean sixty seconds or six hundred and two seconds? And I'm like, okay, well, I don't know how you heard that. I must have said it weird, but like sixty is what I meant. But I like that clarification. six hundred two second version would be Not great So yeah, I kind of like that. it does that. It's' it's so much better. just real quick Like, don't you agree that it's just it's nice to finally have something built in, especially the personal context, the on screen awareness. It's been so useful does work really well I will say It's not perfect Of course you're gonna go negative here, Hartley C. I still have had situations where I am getting annoyed with it It's securely when it comes to like navigation in a car while I'm driving I haven't used still like it's still not been fantastic. Yeah. But with other stuff like I've liked it with music. I've enjoyed using it when I can say somethingomething related to my messages. I can say, o, when did I receive that photo last week? Things like that, it seems to work extremely well And I have been using it for basic inquiries that I just would have previously gone straight over to ChGBT or Claord with So it is undoubtedly better U However Is it perfect? Does it still work one hundred percent? Does it work one hundred percent of the time? No, I'd say it's probably about eighty percent of the time. I'm getting from it what I want Previously, I mean Sirri was working ten percent at the time ifuck ten percent is incredibly generous. Yeah, so it's a huge it's a huge improvement A yeah. I mean, I've even heard Apple employees just say series not great. in the past Now You know That's the kind of stuff that It's just I just like I'm finding it to be so much more useful. Like I'm using reminders now. I don't ever use reminders because I just I don't know. I don't want to go in there and try the set of the salt. Now I'm just like dumping whatever's in my brain because I know Siri can actually handle it and do a good job. Like I'm looking at my email and I'm like, you know what I don't have time for this. So I'm just like, hey, Siri, remind me do this tomorrow and it can do that. I don't have to explain everything. likeike that's so much more helpful. One, I'm trying to navigate through some of the bugs in the operating system with Siri. So I have like a persistent message notification that keep saying I have six unreads, but I can't find where these six unread notifications are. So I said, brring up all of my unread messages and it brought up all six. Now I still can't clear all of them. I've gotten it down to two. evenven though I'm tapping on and opening up these other unreads that are apparently there. again, it's just a system bug that will get you squashed at some point. This is why we're in beta. So I've tried to report that and we'll see what happens. but It's just so much more useful. And even when it doesn't quite get there, it's so close Like if I'm asking it to surface something, it's like it's got it, but it can't open it for some reason. L these are just again, some issues that we're trying to work through, but we're getting there. and I really enjoy how useful it is in the personal context and Um you know, even some of these things that I've seen from like the Apple Watch perspective where you can have like it surface. I don't know how that's going to work. I haven't had it. It obviously is not available yet, but like if I'm on the phone with somebody and a confirmation code, like it's just listening, right? Is it just listening to what I'm doing? And if like It says, hey, I need that airline confirmation code. It's going to surface on my watch. That's amazing That's that's good stuff that you can't get with anything else I agree. and I think it will just take some getting used to. and I think there will be many situations in which 're just it won't be so necessary to go over to these third party trapods quite so often. I mean, they definitely still have their place. If you want to do actual work, have a high level of reliability with I don't know like if you're pasting in a script for one of your videos or something like that You're not really going to do that with Siri. You probably are going to want to use a more dependable model in the long run I imagine that our use of those third party models will potentially decrease Yeah. I mean, I guess ifs like If it's not there yet though, we still have the option to like go out to a third party model for some of these things. So U At least that's baked into the system and I don't really need to like go into the chat GPT or cllaud app. Although Where are all the other extensions? Is that just not available yet? I only see Chat GPT. Yeah. so it's kind of there. It's sort of hidden and it looks like This is something that's coming at a later date. So Mark German talked about this and effectively provide a number of explanations for it, but chief among them was that if Apple had led with extensions, this event, it would have really taken the limelight off Siri So it makes sense to talk about that at a later date probablyroably with an update to IOS twenty seven, maybe twenty seven point one point two when we open up this ecosystem of extensions where you can actually pllug, Chat GBT, or Claud, or Gemini, whatever you want. directly in as an option to use for particular things like generation or something I don't think you'll be able to get it in the dynamic island by default, but you would be maybe able to access it through that if you were to request I from Siri to Ask Llud or by a long press or whatever. It looks like there is evidence of this here. You can even bring up a menu related to it. It's there, but we just can't we can't fully access it as it stands Wait, I didn't even realize this though. Are you using Siri AI just on Mac Be you can't use for anything I'm using Siri AI on my iPhone But I thought it's not available for you right now Well, I am not in the European Union So right, I keep forgetting my bad that's right You are so fine So I was happily enjoying Siri AI and have been since sinceide since the keynote dayay, but I feel very sorry for all those users in the European Union who just don't have this and there's no sign of them getting it. I mean, Apple says that It's working on bringing it to those users I'm sure it will eventually, but it just looks like that they're pretty much at an impasse here. And it all comes down to the fact that European regulation says that there has to be a level playing field between Apple and competitors and Apple does not want to hand over all of the u on device personal contacts directly to Google or JatGBT Yeah. I mean, That's tough, especially for like It's only English available first too. So like that's I mean, more languages will come. Is it Is it just the U. S and your area or is it all like Like would Canada, I haven't looked into this. Is Canada also North America? Yeah, it's just it's only available in English. So any English speak your English to be I mean, could you just change your phone to English if you understood English? and get it that way? Absolutely. I imagine you could, but it's inevitable that other languages are going to be added relatively quickly. I don't imagine that will be a long delay at all It'speularally in major markets, you know, China Um Oh actually no, not China. No China. No I was going to say. I was going to say was China and Germany. And then actually no, notough neither of those countries is going to get it, But there will be plenty of others where it can be regionalized around the world I was going to say, if you live in a country where maybe English is not the first speaking language, but it is a part of the, you know, it's not region locked, like if you're not in China or the EU, but you understand English, then you could just switch your language to English and If you don't already, and you could download it Although people are just now, like I got a friend just yesterday get access to the beta for Siri AI. So it's definitely a slow rollout. And u Yeah, I mean, I don't know What else there is? mayaybe we jump right into some of the Apple intntelligence across apps because I don't know about you. I know it's not Siri based, but like I'm just kind of lumping in Siri AI and Apple intntelligence together in my eyes because it's all just AI. So like why I don't like that they separate them. It's confusing I know it's not Sirory that's doing this thing, but my understanding is that Apple intntelligence relates to the models that underpin Siri AI, so Siri AI is an Apple intelligence feature, but not all Apple intelligence features are Siri AI I guess yeah. Coler just, I don't know, whatever. There are some worthwhile features in here. I've noticed the recommended messages in the messages app where it predicts what you want to say have been a huge amount better. They sound far more like something I would say because of course is reading back through those messages now and actually you'reating something a lot more specific and personal So I've been quite impressed by that Um And also I have had a little play around with Image Playground, which does seem a huge amount more powerful now. I mean, it even it's not even close where it is capable of doing Well, the fact that you could do photo realalistic now is Pret helpful Because if like you didn't care about all those weird animation styles beforehand, then you just probably didn't use it I haven't tried Genoji. Has there been any, you know, there's improved quality and speed for that? Have you had any luck with that? Yeah I've tried it. It's got a different UI now. It doesn't generate multiple options I think or at least it didn't on my device. I don't know if that's something to do with the beta. quality does seem to be noticeably improved. used to get weird things with Gen Moji where it would add artifacts and other objects or would misunderstand It does seem to be better. I mean, of course, I haven't done like an intense test of genoji that hasn't been toped top of my priorities. But when I have gone to useer over the last week to try out, it does seem to be a little bit better, yes say that in writing tools I have noticed that the personalized suggestions are a little bit more my style because like I would never write some of the ways that they replace my writing beforehand. I'm like I just don't Not everything is this proper or this casuals. likeike I'm kind of in the middle But where is this more discoverable placement of writing tools? Because I haven't really seen it pop up any more so than it normally does I think it's just in the I think it's when you long press long press or right click on on text, but I don't know I would agree. I have not seen it. be I' to say, but I'm hopping I imagine it's easier to navigate through that UI, but I suren' takaking a closer look at that just yet U Oh also, did you try creating a gen emoji from photos of specific people I ha have not tried that Okay. Didn't couldn't it have done that beforehand? It could do that before, but I think the whole thing it's like would be better yeah. Yeah. Okay Um try to think of what other Apple intelligence stuff we didn't talk about from last week. I don't know. Is there anything that you specifically have like really loved, even if we talked about it last week that you use quite a bit I am thoroughly impressed by the new passwords feature. We touched on this last week Okay, go on. I have some things to say doesnn't always work And I know it's still in beta But when it works, it is amazing I'm just going to keepep saying the usual disclaimer, it's a beta I changed ten passwords. Take a guess how many actually followed through I was impressed. I was like, hell, yeah, that was that was I don't have to do that one The other nine did not work. It failed. So We'll see. I like the idea. It's a good idea. Aolute le the time. Oh, I hope so. We're at out percent It's like old st. T try ten percent new nutrition features as well with visual intelligence That're pretty cool. You can't really get any of it to Apple Health, but at a glance, just to give you a sense of how healthy something is, it's pretty useful. I have used it a couple of times I hope that gets better. I kind of would love to have like been kind of like what you can get with some of these other third party apps, which I guess would cannibalize those apps so that kind of sucks. So it's kind of hard to wish for this, but like I think lose it is an app that I've tried before where you just snap a photo and I don't know how accurate this is, but it seems accurate. You snap a photo of your food and it recognizes everything on the plate and gives you an idea of how many calories you're eating. Like I would want something like that. or at the very least some sort of caloric tracking system in health, maybe that's coming. And then when you do snap, you know, something is able to read that added in automatically We could just be early and You need to be more patient, but yeah I did like that. Some of the other visual intelligence stuff Is there anything there that you, you know, it's on the iPad now. which is beyond nutrition features I haven't I haven't taken a deeper dive into that. Yeah, I don't really use it that much either. It's nice that it's a camera. It's clear that Siri is a star of the show here and It is good enough for now. I think next year, I will be wanting a little more. Let's go a little bit further. Let's really step it up a level. We've got Siri broadly up to its competitors in terms of being a basic chat bot And it is better than its competitors with regards to personal context. Now, let's see what it can do when it actually comes to controlling devices coding accessing the file system. can it do with complex Automations. What can it do with controlling my Mac from my iPhone Um these are the this is the direction that I would like to see it go in And of course Um, you know, visual intelligence and things like that make for a good demo it's still not at the point where it's indispensable to my daily life. and it should eventually be at that stage where I really do point it and put my iPhone at stuff provides me with context for it while it's pretty good in certain situations, like if you've got a, I don't know, a business card or something you've received and you want to get that in the contact app Realistically, I don't even know if I'd remember to do that a lot of the time. We still usees business cards. come on, I mean Someome people do I guess I guess in the business world, I'm not in that world, so what do I know Five Yeah So should we move on to some of the individual platform updates to something to say want to go to to M There's only a few for each platform. It's not a whole lot But the main feature with MacOS Golden Gate is rolling back some of these design changes from last year. and it is rolling them back really because we've gone back to a consistent border radius, which made a lot of people very angry last year when That was different across apps. We've got rid of that weird kind of glass pane that looked like it was sitting above the app you were using. So I think that looks way better. We've just gone back to how it was before And we've got rid of a lot of these icons that existed Um, in the toolbar. So everything now just looks a lot cleaner did in MacOS twenty five So So is going back. Great. Yeah. but it does MacOS. I think that the problem a lot of the problem was that Liquid gllass last year was clearly built for the iPhone first. And it as a result, it look quite good on the iPad as well because they're the same thing On other platforms, whether that was the Apple TV or the Apple Watch or the Mac, it looked a bit weird and not very finished And especially where the Mac has so many objects on the display at any given time you've got windows and sidebars and a bunch of menus and text and images justust looks a bit messy and actually looked It was definitely harder to perceive things and get this kind of clean aesthetic with liiquid glass on the Mac, but it looks like now liquid glass has been specifically optimized for the Mac. U And I think it looks a huge amount better. I agree U, although like I said before, I mean, a lot of these changes, I guess my attention to detail on the Mac is very low because I don't know, I'm just there to get my videos done. I'm focused in Final Cup Rro, I'm editing. I don't really care what these design border radius looks like at this point. I'm just trying to get getet my stuff done U But yeah, I don't know that I would have noticed a lot of these changes, but when they do put it side by side, you're like, okay, that does look better. So it's good good to have for those who are very upset about it. Um Golden Gate is the name. I know last week we mentioned it. I want to ask you again. Do you like the name? I think it's fine personally and do you how did you feel I know we asked you this There was Apple PR in the room, so maybe we were both being a little more reserved Now's your time. How did you feel about the little skit Yeah, it was fine. Craig overall was a lot less cheeky this year, right? Well I don't I don't even think it was that. I just think that this year Apple realized that There was so much pressure around AI and Apple intelligence that this wasn't the year to goof around so much. So the whole keynote had a very different feel like last year. I feel like they would have actually have gone to the Golden Gate to shoot something Yeah We've done loads of crazy shots, but this year, almost everything was filmed at Apple Park, I think actually everything was. I don't remember anything that was not on Apple Park's campus, which I think is a first for one of these prereorded keynotes And everything felt a lot more grounded. I felt like there were fewer cuts between shots there was clearly a lot more handheld camera as well a lot more pauses, everything just felt a lot more natural. And I think that That speaks to maybe a recognition in Apple that A lot of what we've been saying that's Sometimes the keynotes that have pre recorded have just been a little bit too much of a sterile Infomarshall. and this did feel more like a real demo. And I think even the fact that after the demo, they did that Q and A session that I know you are present for I mean, they haven't done anything like that for years almost felt more like a I mean, it was in person demos. was it wasn't an event per se, but it was on stage with these personalities speaking more freely And it was so nice to see. And I feel like if this is a look at a more kind of hybrid format for all of it, I think that is the direction to move in Definitely. everyvery high profile person was there. Tim John sit in front row. A lot of other execs were all there to like listen. So it was kind of a big deal I think that if we can get more like that, that would be a good thing. But it does even make me wonder, is Apple considering going even further than that? because this is definitely the pendulum swinging back in the other direction with events and I think they maybe are learning. We don't need to actually go to the Golden Gate. tell us that the new version of MacOS is MacOS Golden Gate. um, and You know, they still had some some good quips in there and things like that I thought were pretty fun, but it just It felt like it was a new kind of keynote, which it felt a lot more fresh. Even the format we talked about this last week focusing on cross platform features rather than doing What has increasingly become untenable over recent years of splitting things up I thought it worked really well Yeah, I mean, especially if a lot of For this year specifically, if there's not a lot of new features for each one, this is the right way to go. just so that doesn't seem like, oh, is that it? Although I got many texts honestly during the event saying that this was really boring. don't know people just maybe that's a good thing Yeah, everything was fine. I was We just needed to get these features out. We just needed to we knew what it was going to do. It just does what Chap GPT does pretty much That's okay, but that's not going to be the most exciting thing in the world Uh iPad OS twenty seven real quick. Let's try to muscle through this. Undo and redo home screen edits. forgot that was a thing Until just now, U H you used to you mess up your painstakingly created home screen view. Yeah. Now you can click undo, which is good. G'm going to try trying it right now. Let's see. So if I move this over here, I know this is great to listen to Oh yeah, there's a little undo button. Is that on the iPhone too? I have noticed that I actually I don't know, I don't know if it's on the iPhone.'ll find We also get those extra large widgets. There are plenty of features, of course. Everything that's in iOS twenty seven is also on iPad IS twenty seven, but there are still just a handful of specific features such as now you can have the menu BarP persistent top of the screen rather than kind of disappearing and you have to go up there with your cursor. so it makes it a little bit more Mac like. Um You can use image wand with the Apple pencil to generate more photore realalistic images Um using Apple intntelligence, which isn't surprising that's using image playlayground and of course the Siri app on the iPad has a sidebar and windowing support because it's on the iPad. and partarticularly windowing is very useful if you've got notes open and other stuff. if you actually are a power user of the iPad, maybe you connect it to an external display It's good that the SII app is fully supported. I mean, you wouldn't really expect anything less. Lly, as you talked about does have a specific automation now for connecting a keyboard. but that's pretty much it for the iPad. Yeah, going back real quick, works great to undo your home screen on the iPad, does not exist on the iPhone, which is absolutely absurd. Why Who made that decision moood is like now. What do you mean What do you mean? Just make it There's got to be some space somewhere I agree, but. That's what it in there Like in the In the left, you know, it's like the brush and like that's new by the way. and like that's the new icon to like bring down that menu. Why can't you just put undo there? huh Like I mean, I don't Or maybe making a hidden thing. I thought maybe for a second if you like long pressed on the check button to like say you're good. If you long pressed, maybe an undo option popped up. There you go. Apple take that one for free. But like the iPhone is literally one where I would want to have that too because sometimes my stuff gets messed up and I don't want to move it back. Um, I just frustrated when I saw that makes me mad Watch OS twenty seven just dropped a video actuallyually, I haven't put it out. Well, no, yes. when you're listening to this, the video is out just dropped a video going through some of this I think Siri AI makes this a pretty huge update personally. The rest of the stuff, not so much, although I like the dynamic app grid. I don't know about you, but I think it's great. Some people hate it because of course those apps change and their locations change. And so if you want to build a muscle memory to And. To be familiar and get to an appb quickly, you can't do that I imagine in a future version of this, we will be able to pin to specific places, but I love it. I've been saying for years, I want a way to get to a smaller selection of apps more quickly This will be perfect for that. So I look forward to getting that on my next Apple watchatch And Siri AI will be front and center when that comes. So that'll be like the main middle app But also I can understand why people might be upset because Now it removes basically a feature too, because if you double tap the digital crown, it just takes you to dynamic app grid. It removed the what was it the recently used apps, which I did use kind of a lot Um So that kind of stinks for some people myself included. Also, the one person out there, well, I guess the two people out there who use walkie talky, I'm very sorry that has been dropped Did you ever use walkie talky ever? I did use it. I did. When it was first announced, When it was first announced and in the years following, I did circle back to it every now and then with you know family members if you're out shopping or something like that. it is kind of useful The main problem it had for me was it just was never reliable. It always seemed really buggy, never worked very well. And it felt like with each update, it worked Was and wor How would you living have that bug for a while where it would turn on someone's microphone without them knowing so you could hear. which probably did wasn't great for the reputation of that app. put light ons I'm going to be one hundred percent honest with you tested it when it first came out never used it again, notot one time So I have many questions. Completely forgot that that feature exists first off U And I don't even think when I first tested it for a video, like it was so new that no one else had it. So I don't think I ever fully like understood or experienced what happens when another person like walkie talkies you. Maybe I did in the video and we had Julia. It just kind of tapped your wrist and had a specific noise I mean, but when it worked, it was pretty cool automatically Yeah, it had a control center widget, so you could leave it turned on and then that meant you were available for Walkie Talie. And then if someone initiated that conversation, it would kind of double tap and bring up the UI What about when it was unavailable? Did it leave you a message kind of thing No, it just said that person is not available, right? That's what I'm talking about. How How How useless is it? You'd have to keep it on all the time. ultimately, I think you should just call that person if you need to spe. but I liked the idea it was worth trying it, I guess. I guess if you're like an old school like you maybe you're doing a road trip and there are two tandem cars and you want to walkie talkie, because I'm bringing that up because literally last year, my wife and I with our families went to Denver and we had two cars and in the other car, the native Denver person was telling us all of these things like as we were driving through the mountains like look out your left. and we just brought Walkie talk is like, no joke That was our way of doing it instead of like being on the phone the whole time So it was kind of it was useful. Would I have used my Apple Watch for that? No Like, I don't know. And it just seems dumb I'm glad it had its time that feature. I mean, some people are sad to see it go H them, I would have liked to have seen it maybe reengineered, reimagined, made truly cross platform because I think there is a space for something like that as an alternative to a phone call, Bud I mean, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. I guess I should rephrase because there are people that are probably listening that use it and I don't want to upset them. And also I just I truly believe that there's no reason to remove a feature unless it's like Truly no one is using it and it doesn't make any sense for them to keep doing any kind of work or support for it, or it's like a vulnerability So like if I don't use it, what do I care? It's not hurting me that it's on my wrist. So I guess I feel bad that it's being removed ople has the data, right? They know nobody's using it. They have to One of the other changes that I liked is consolidating the find My app because something that's always bothered me about the Apple Watch is you have all these apps Clock app kind of annoys me like that as well, but I guess it makes more sense with the Clock app that you have four different clock apps or doesn't make any. J just do the same thing Maybe next year we'll get that. but in this instance, the separate as it is in W US twenty six, you have finding objects, finding people and then finding devices as separate apps, even though they all look the same Now that is one consolidated redesigned app. So that's great Uh, yeah, I agree. I mean, I don't ever really use it that much U Maybe sometimes it's, you know, I want to get to find my end for some specific things like a device or something, and it's nice that it's just kind of in one app. There's no reason to have three Vision OS twenty seven. honestly, I haven't had a chance to test this one yet. So I did like the idea that series just kind of a bubble that floats around and you can look at it and just start talking. you don't have to touch it or anything. So Yeah, I think it was a pretty good update for Vision OS. I mean, even little features like there's now a widget for Mac virtual display, so you can trigger Mac virtual display without even opening your Mac er very useful because that's such an important feature to Vision OS. And I think that if you're a Vision OS power user, the ability to have Siri there is this floating ball that even casts shadow and you can just look at stuff and that you can you can search stuff up with Siri using that I think that's great. And also now there's this new curvature with windows. so rather than seeming just like a static flat Pain Now they can also curve around, which makes sense. I mean, after all, that's what you can do with Mac virtual display It's good update. The reason why I haven't gotten to it y I'm going to make a video on it and also the reason why I'm going to make a video on it. And here's why I don't do a ton of Vision Ot content to begin with recording is a nightmare. It looks terrible. It's fouated. L there is there is an app and I can't remember where it is. I think it got removed, maybe or I don't know what happened, but there was the third party app that made this better and then I couldn't find it and just doesn't work anymore U But Apple made the recording quality better It's not fooveiate anymore. It's like the full resolution that you would need. So it's going to look a lot better when I do a video on this, hopefully. The one thing I asked them, I was like hoping that they removed and they didn't was the head like movement Can you just remain stationary? That was what the other app did. that was great. because I, you know, I'm an energetic person. I talk with my hands. I'm Italian, you know, I move my head a lot So people are getting pretty mad that they're like, could you just sit still, please? And I'm like I can't I have to look around. so Yeah, that's going to be there still unfortunately. But I gave them that idea. It seemed like, I don't know, when I spoke with them, they were just kind of like, oh, yeah, that would be a good idea. We should remove that. And I was like, what? whyy are you looking at me? if you just thought of this now U But yeah, so screen recording is going to be better. So I will go through a lot of the new features because there are some updates that are pretty good Um TVOS haven't had a chance to look at this one yet Redesigned podcast app. has that haveave you looked at it? Do it look a lot better No, I mean, there's also support for video podcasts for the first time, which makes sense because it's Apple TV. So if you're going to watch a podcast, it's probably a pretty good place to watch it Absolutely. Very small update for TBOS otherwise. O our podcast I working on it by the way. will be on video. so Just hang in there H R lossless. so if you have a set upp that supports that That's a good feature if you're an audio file, but There's really not a whole lot with TVOS, which makes it all the stranger that we've dropped some devices, but I guess it has more to do with liquid glass than anything else We're up against time. So what do you anything that you want to touch on that we just didn't spend a lot of time on before? I don't think so. I think that's the majority of the major features. I think we've done pretty well at wading through a lot of this in just two podcast episodes Yeah, I think this is it for now. There's also a lot of other news that Germman dropped this past week that maybe we'll get to next week if there isn't any other breaking stories, but We're going to hold off for for a little while now on some of these because there's just been a lot. And I know u are probably sick of it, but like I think the one thing I do want to mention The home kit camera stuff. I think I might have said something last time, but you know, again, Apple PR was in the room. Is this this is like another hint, right that we're going to get a camera from them or no. I would imagine it probably has something to do with that. Yeah. And the H hub too because it's like that like whole setup where it was able to like cut through each camera and give you that like that just looks like it would be perfect for the home hub I imagine that these things are done for a reason. Yeah, okay. All right, well, you know, Well, that's that's everything else kind of. I mean, there's a lot more, but we just haven't had a chance to really go through it all because there's so much. And honestly, I don't know that a lot of it is that interesting, but put out a bunch of videos, I'm sure Hartley and the rest of the team has put out a ton more articles on everything. You know, stay locked into everything and of course, we'll catch everybody in next week's episode
