Jace locks the quQueen in her room and convinces Bela to fly with their dragons to save Coralus and his ships. After successfully claiming Sheepstaler, Rna joins to help the battle, but she can't control the dragon. Sheepstealer attacks Jace and Bela while also bathing ships in fire indiscriminately. Byattle's end, it's unclear who truly won police are torched, the sea snake is missing and Jace plus his dragon are Instead that has been your midnight manifest for theouse House of the Dragon seeason three So Before we get into instant reactions For this show, I wanted to rewind because in the last season peopleeople remember, I think That was a let down in terms of just like this was the battle that they were saving. We all were just like, oh we're waiting for a season of Jies to do wh. it was like,ope, you got to wait So Do you guys How do you guys think the show kind of set the table for that because to me, almost just put us back in the world. There wasn't really a lot They was just like, this almost seemed like A strike continuation of where we're at and se to us like, Ohh shit, we are We're doing this, okay? I really I really enjoyed that because to your point, we finished season or season two episode eight and we're like, all right What's next? Yeah. they're like, you got to wa, you got to wait two years. You know, we talk we've talked that nauseum about, you know, HBO cutting the season short, the riter strikes, the whole thing that affected season two. But I feel like and this's why I enjoyed the episode so much because it didn't baby us. It didn in't like, hey, we've been gone for two years here's the d, they're like,. We're back, baby. This is basically season two episode nine. Yeah. Here you go right there. And I just I just love being back in that world just like in general, but also they didn't play they didn't try to play with me. They didn't try to like, Hey guys, rememember this, they're like, no. We're back. I'm very interested to see what the previously on package that we're going to get on HBO when this actually like when the premiere happens, what everybody's going to see for five minutes of like to bring everybody up speed because it was quite jarring to be like, o Wait a minute I need to go back and see this film because I'm like forgot Wait a minute. whereere are we now? Who is this? Yes, yes, yes It was it was brilliant because It was nothing but plot. There was nothing but plot happening in this episode and it was thrilling to see U I think my main sort of like vibe check on where the show is at right now is that this is operating like we know that we are barreling towards a finality I don't know how it like what the vibe is for the show to convey that feeling, but everything is operating at least in this episode of like are pointing towards an ending And all of the meandering that we were gettingetting criticized for in the second season, gone The show and the narrative of the show They can't backpedal for you guys. Like I mean, for for For the audience watching the show can't go back and go, oh, remember this stuff that happened? No, right. Yeah would be like That would be regressive exposition. And I will say this though I watched the episode twice And I did go back after the first time I watched it and watch some YouTube recaps. He doesn't want to go other plac because there's danger out there. He's trying to take the authority close to him to kind of rally the troops around his. But it's this weird stalemate that he actually kind of finds himself in because of the fact that Aegon and Laris have absconded. It's because o, this is actually the closest that I could actually be to locking in some sort of power if I actually stayed put and he doesn't want to stay put He doesn't want to go anywhere. or he doesn he want wants to fight He wants to fight. He doesn't want to stay put is what I'm saying. Oh I don't know. if that's the case. You think that he wants to I don't think he wants No I think he is scared. You can't do all of it. and it like shows that like To me, that was what was interesting about this episode was like Aman having a big swinging dick when like the score is up then when he back is against the wall is just like, who argues? And she became a Targaryen at the end, one of the bad Targaryens when she decided that no matter what King's Landing, Westeros was hers and it was her right. and it was her family's right The friend she made along the way was actually an entire kingdom. She built a kingdom. She had people. She had an army. She had a navy She had people that loved her. She had people that would die for her, people that she had freed. She had a culture that she had become a part of and a culture that she had kind of ruled She had done all of that. she could have ruled somewhere else. She could have built something better than what they had in King's Land. somethinghing freer Yeah, something but she cannot she couldn't lose sight of what and who she was, which is a Targaryen. So if you are a Targaryen, you think this place belongs to me. This is mine. It's been mine ever since my ancestor took three dragons, burned everybody up, and made everybody into my subjects. This is mine In this situation right here We're not even Rini didn't even have that I don't feel like people even feel that. She actually hasn't really done anything for them other than to put them at war Right? The belief is all oriented around succession and who should be next and what is fair and what is not fair. And that's very difficult to be loyal to You have to completely get on somebody else's side to be like, hey, you've been done wrong. I'm gonna put my life on the line for it. And so to me when I saw this, obviously I was like Um I was like the J thing was terrible and all of that, but it also told me It was Great storytelling from the In my opinion from the standpoint of this is what's wrong with her kingdom What's wrong with her kingdom is things that you need to have a kingdom don't exist there. Like like they don't exist there and I'll say again, that is another to me commentary on the fact that she's a woman No of course and the fact that she's a woman means they they respect her a little bit less than they would if that were Damon. No fucking way they're locking Damon in that room. R. No fucking way because he's going to come out and kill everybody. Yeah But but no fucking way they're doing that. They're not doing that. hasas the show because I don't know if this show The thing that I'm constantly confused by is Is Rhaenyra supposed to be a good And what I mean by that is like We see Sansa or or Rob or John or all of these other people We see the things that make them Great candidates for the throne and then terrible candidates. Yeah. And you can kind of situate donon't know over this and now we're in the third season over those first two but now I'm like even know what Rhaenyra wants to roll over, I don't know What are her feats? What are the things that she's doing That's the thing. me people want to follow her. But that's the thing. she's operating purely on the fact that this is her birthright It doesn't matter about what her like she deserves the opportunity to. But is she wise? Like like at what point is to this world it doesn't matter. Is she a tactical genie? Is it like Most of the time she's just making decisions where I'm just like all of Kingss Landing is operated on the fact that like they've had benevolent kings, they've had asshole kings. Yeah. She's never been and she's been denied the chance to be herself right at every turn. I mean, everybody's depicted a lot worse in the books, frankly and Raenyra in the books supposed to be like a f Joy Bookck She's supposed to be like fat, angry. like they the way they position her Yeah. She be what? Fat angry sad. say that like that That's that's what they in the books. That's but you candid us out there Yeah, John J own' say So in the books is it situated? Is this the propaganda that the other side saying that Renyra the things would have been different Renyra's on GOP onees So in the books, it's like she's angry, she's sad. That's funny. She is like she they just like position her as this like to your point, like only just obsessed with the drone. just obsessed with being wise. What's her what's her Be of because of f blood Because of Viseris. what am I doing? Viseris is like, hey, she should be king and then or she should be the next ruler doesn't happen and then she becomes obsessed with it point where her sons die, she gets really sad, but it doesn't really matter it's all about Sin on the throne And that's what happens. That's what happens to a Targaryen that's obsessed with Targaryenness and ruling. It's such it's a part of their bloodline to subjugate and be obsessed with being the ruler. Exactly. Yeah. And so like, yeah, that's like kind of mean it's everybody's downfall, which bringsakes me a second point, which is like a Bigger thing about the story, which is like You know, we're having a lot of fun arguing about like the dump things that these people are doing whatever This story is about the fall, not really like the fall House Trgaryens, but the loss of the dragons of The beginning of the end. The beginning of the end. Yeah, right. In order to do that, You got to you're going to had to do some dumb stuff. You have like a a fifteen old lead on Dragons R? How could you mess up? This whole thing is dumb. This whole whole g is because somebody got somebody It's going to be the whole thing is dumb. And like like there's a little bit like, you know, some wroting stuff and whatever. But like the decisions these characters make are all going to be stupid because when we all when it's all said and done I don't know if this is a huge spoiler, but there's going to be no dragons left I mean we' was sitting there like, how the hell did this happen? So no, I agree with you, but if we go to another HBO show That does this very well, succession. whereere it is like succession goes out of its way to show you like, oh no, the Roy kids idiots But they each possess something that does make them equipped. Like you can tell like, hey, youo, Kendall has no interpersonal skills, but when it comes to thinking about the business He knows more than his siblings. You can tell that like, o, what you w call it? Romans shiv, huh? Romans. Like Roman, you're just like, oh, Roman has that thing where when he's with powerful people, he can schmooze, he knows how to be there. And I'm like the thing that I'm missing in House of the Dragon is I'm like, Well these kids are a lot younger than the R kids are But all the Ries are also in this situation What I will say that that's an interesting comparison, and a really interesting comparison. But the Roy Kids were, they do have jobs in the business So So like they they like they are they run something. They run something. like so they they so they have been m I do love the comparison though I I'm just wondering for mir. what is the thing But that but this this other song Well I mean is what this is what I push back on slightly just for the comparison of succession is because those qualities are good for leveling up to run a business This and it's something that Unitedeven Kingdoms highlights so well is that the only thing that really you need to be accessible to power is for somebody above you to say you deserve this. And it doesn't matter what you how good of a person you are. It doesn't matter how qualified you are. If you are born of a certain way, if you look a certain way, if you have the right armor, if you have the right things to say, that's all you need. So then fairing to buck that Exactly. He was trying to bucket He he was trying to b Okaykay. So what did he see in Rhaenyra? Do we know that? Is there something special inside of her that made him or did he just think that it shouldn't skip her? because This is There's an argument to be made about qualification versus entitlement You can be benevolent in this situation by just saying, hey, you should not have to lose your birthright because you are a woman. Yeah That doesn't make you specifically guys, please, you know, qualify on those. Yeah yeah. All right. That doesn't make you specifically qualified What is trying to what is not and that not all kings and princes are qualified. Most of them as we see this story you go to the story longer definitely most of them or not But what I guess he was trying to say is Her being a woman isn't a deerit that makes her inherently unqualified to rule and I'm going to book that I'm going to buck the idea that because she is a lady, that I have to wait course for somebody else. alsoso There is the situation of her parentage and how the queen might feel about his his queen And about like that and now you have a new family and that family is more Oriented aroundong the lines of politics and stuff like that who you had to marry to have the heir. I don't want to do all of that. I loved this woman. This is our progeny. I want that love to rule even more than I want this person to rule. And I don't want the kids of the lady that I had to marry like after everybody had passed away. That's not how I feel about that. That's not the thing But none of this stuff is earned But none of this stuff, the succession story is about kids who are actually in the business and they can't earn it Like the real thing that happened in all of this is there was a weak king And if there was there was a weak king And he should have stuck to his guns, but he couldn't. couldn't stick to his guns. And so a weak king ended up being the thing that injected so much dysfunction into this entire deal. because if you're going to have a monarchy demand strong kings the French Revolution in part, happen because they had a kid on the throne You know what I mean? I don't know how we got to the first Rolution. But we were talking about this earlier because obviously This is the flag ship Game of Thrones property right now and for HBO, this is something that they're obviously betting a lot on. Interesting this third season coming out in a post Night of the Seven Kingdoms world because I was like, oh, there is a mark there is a difference when You are basing something off of somethingomething that George R. Martin wrote versus having to fill in a lot of the gaps And I could feel it in this episode where I was just like, oh, the characters aren't as strong like the the dial and everything there's just it's not as I mean, I might not do that on this episode in particular because this is a very like Front loaded plot heavy ot necessarily acting light, but it's certainly acting lesser than say the prior episodes. I think that If I were to judge it based on that, I would probably have to wait for like a more I guess dialogue heavy episode. if that makes sense. because I don't think that like this is An episode that proves to me that They're kind of like losing the ball when it comes to character development. I know what I'm saying they've ever had the ball on character development in House of the Dragon. I think it's been a very spotty. I think it's been I think the big characters get it like Rhaenyra, the Daemons, the Allicents when it comes to that So the lower ones with the Jaces, the Belass, the Ryas, that's where I'm like, oh, I can see what happens when you don't when there's not as much text Yeah When you have to almost create characters h Yeah. But I would say that some of those fabrications and liberties that this show has taken were kind of genius sometimes. like they're meeting in the set in season two of stuff that really works. Yeah, a lot of stuff that really works that weren't in the books. And Yes, there's still like conjecture and things because it's like a, you know, unreliable narrator type situations. one book. Yeah, it's one book and it's not written by the people that are in it. But he's right There's like less of adventures. Yeah. And like all it it's it's less adventurous All like all the all the adventures like matter in building characters, especially for TV. Yeah.ss it's less adventures. but I do think that the writers have done I actually just tend to agree with Steve based upon the source material. I think you're both right Not that it matters. There is a level of because To your point, like the Jac', the Belas, the Ryas, like those second level characters. There's there's like maybe like a paragraph about like, oh, they do this. And then it's just like, Chase did this, Jase did that. Chase went here. Chase died. Yeah. That's it. That's it. And then but in fucking the other books man these nigas then gone off And like had hol You know what I'm saying? They didn' they didn't become wizards and they didn't bec assassins and like like all the kids have a lot more. it was just totally this dense high fantasy. You know what I mean? There's actual like characterization to pull from from the books. And so what like I'm sure you're talking about like Nine seven kingdoms and and Game of Thrones at the same time, but like you can you can take Ario story and ye and do the whole thing. Sana, John, Rob, the whole thing, even for Duncan A. Right? I'm sure like we it's only the first Novevela, but there's so much those people in that novella that you you know what dunk should sound like. You know what dunk should should look like. You know what Dunk should feel like on screen. sameame with egg For these characters, brother does it take you out of it What I notice more is I'm like when it's a character Like a Daemon or an Allicent or a Rhaenyra. in the show I'm loving the show. When it dips to all the other kind of ancillary characters I would be like It's What is that like when somebody's on a beach and then a woman shows up and they're like, who are you? And she just says, I'm a witch. moves on. I'm like, o, okay. Yeahah, this She was in thet But you can so many place way it happens where I'm like, oh, the dragon seeds like they don't know what what to do with those characters yet. And like they're gonna be important, but there is a I'm just like, oh, you guys are juggling so fucking much You got toa keep them around, keep them on ice until you deploy. Yeah, whereas with like Game of Thrones what it was really great at doing is like they introduced a lot of characters, but as someone who didn't read the books, I didn't know who was important characterization was so great and they were so three dimensional until they ran out of book. Exactly You you know what I mean? like in in you know So I get what you're saying though is like no, this wasn't a bad episode at all. This was a phenomenal episode. It was just a moment like the episode where I was like Which What were those moments? Okay, so this dragon seed we were putting pin in the dragon seeds for sure. they were theyre barely in epode That wasn't great. I think the Jace Baya Rainna Dragon shit was dumb as f. It was annoying, but it was thrilling though. like it was gutting emotionally to watch them but that was good TV, you? No You look at the battle of the G When when the when the second season ended and all of the book readers were just like, y'all don't know what's coming. Yall don't know what's coming. They like the next episode is gonna to be blah, blah, blah. I'll be honest, the most thrilling parts of this episode weren't actually like the battle Okay, which I like I think there'ays something about the show. L it wasn't like the them flying over the ships or whatever was kind of like, all, whatever. That's never the those are to be honest with you, those are never my favorite parts of the Game of Thrones show. It' like Tver. like there' some really awesome battles. But like, you know, that's nothing you can't get from like Braveart, You know what I mean? Like there's I wanted to spin master and command I' talking about Battle of the Bastards a great battle. why stakes though is the stakes, we understand stakes so much. We understand why people are making the decisions where it's like with Jase for this battle to work for it to come off as this supreme tragedy I have to understand Jase so fundamentally well to really understand Rhaenyra's pain and all of this other stuff. and it's kind of like I don't. Well The reason why it resonated for me so much is because number one, she's already lost a son So now this now what you start to get in this u in this show is the ultimate question, which is like legitimately Why is she willing to sacrifice for this? 'cause it's going into the realm of it costing you everything, E L It's costing you all the dragons, it's costing you all your family. Itsost it's costing you everything. And what I do like that the show is done is it's raised the stakes of that incrementally throughout the shows. At first it was just gonna to cost a friendship That was the first thing Reny and Allison's friendship. Oh now they're enemies. That's very sad. Then it was like, I don't know, man. there all of these other unresolved things that exist that are peripheral to this central story that people already have problems with And those things are going to be kind of caught up in all of this. And the cost keeps rising. Now you're getting to a point to where the other houses are affected, everything's being burnt up. Everyone is in disrepair. Nothing is going right. Is this all worth it? And the way that you can really get to the heart of that is through individual characters. You bury two kids, it had better been worth it. And for her in this situation not only Did she bury two kids? One of them died trying to On her behalf, right? Yeah One of them died defying her all from a situation thates she crereatate? So before we wrap up, we didn't talk about this scene, but it was one of my favorite scenes from the episode And it's what I hope the show will start leaning into is like So Kristen Cole And that whole scene where he's basically like he's still in shock because he is a character now that is realizing he assigned up for going too far whereere he's just like what what does this world mean when we have nukes dropping on our heads? What does it mean about civilty and knighthood and everything that I understood about the society. And I was like, okay, that's interesting because that is when you think about war, that is what the best War movies books are all about, which is just like to your point. What are we actually fighting for? And what are we willing to sacrifice? How many kids and women and men have to burn to the ground and what does it like what does it means to be a knight? And a perf And a perfect counter to that is only if we abandon our principles, do we become those Sies. Yeah. Yeah Um I thought it was I thought we werere off to a bank upp season. This does seem like James Gunn almost recreating what he helped popularize around the Guardians of the Galaxy era. And I'm like I want to see something new. I want to see that you guys can still like wow me in a theater and that doesn't mean with spectacle a lot of times.
