Okay. on today's show though We are talking about a pretty momentous moment in fandom The series, not seasons The series finale of the boys, which show that has subverted challenged U lampooned parody Superhero culture for a very, very long time. and a show That really against all odds when you think about it has managed to cut through Homelander became an iconic villain that everybody knew, that everybody was aware of The show didn't really come in with any. Tremendous AS stars drive it. came in with big conceptual ideas and it It kind of started off, you know, like on a streamer is Not a little engine. Nothing on fucking Amazon could be a little engine. But it's a show they didn't come in with a whole bunch of fanfare and it's managed to kind of And then turned it into their flagship show, arrguably after maybe what would be Amazon's flagship shows I mean, now it might be fallout. Fallout Fallout for sure. Invincible. Yeah. No, but I mean in the beginning days of Amazon Prime, that was the show what kind twenty nineteen six this is like twenty ninet twenty nineteen. Yeah been around a lot. They dropped the first one in a binge. This is a binge situation S time, the second season they went to week to week and fans didn't actually like that. they actually you bombed them because they didn't like it Um, but the show has been able to kind of endure Uh ups and downs, but now this is the end. It's kind of a big deal. Have we covered another multi season finale of a show here. Is this the first and only time we've done this we've gotten to a series finale. We got to a series finale. I mean, I'm going to be honest how many shows and I think this speaks to Eric Kripi and the boys. How many shows have we covered in this age that get this amount of seasons and get usually it's like you get one or two seasason the second season you the series for next like was two seasons. R The Andor was built like a l was built like because Rogue One was like built And then most of the MCU shows only again have been like one and dones. Right Right, right. So this is like it's kind of a big thing. sort of it feels like it feels like we'll get to it All right, Al also we're gonna talk about a brand new trailer. Guys, it's a brand new lanterns trailer. Getting ready to talk about the boys. You're listening to a reaction podcast. The spoilers are coming To begin our reactions, we have to put you in the know. The only way to do that is the midnight Mifest. The only person who can do that is Chuck, Chuck, taking away All right, this is the series finale of the Bys, Blood and Bonees directed by Phil Sagrisia, written by Jalina Neri and re The boys mourn Frenchy ass homeomelander reveals from the White House that the public should treat him as a go Kimico's new soldier boy powers manifest after sister Sage taunts her after the funeral. Sage's super intelligence disappears when she takes a blast from Kimicko, giving the boys a final way to take down Homelander. Homelander tries to win Ryan over to his cause, but his son rebuffs him. The group then infiltrates the White House, and fights and defeats the deep, H and MM take down her father, while Butcher and Kimko face off against Homelander Homelander almost gets the best of the boys, but Ryan flies in to stop his father at the last minute. After seeing a force gohost to Frenchie, Kimico is able to blast away Homelander's powers. This also strips Butcher and Ryan of their superpowers. Homelander begs Butcher to spare him, but instead, the leader of the boys drives a crowbar straight through his forehead. Unfortunately, even if Butcher wins the battle, he loses his personal war becausecause Ryan wants nothing to do with him while his dog Terror died while Butcher was off getting his revenge. Distraught, Butcher takes the soup killing virus of So ofol HQ an effort to kill all superheroes for good Huie tries to stop Butcher one last time, but ends up having to kill his mentor. At show's N, the boys disband, Edgar takes control over Vugh. MM remarries his wife and takes care of Ryan. Kimico spends time in France with her new dog and Hwing and fight crime while waiting for the arrival of their daughter This has been your last Midnight Mifest for the boys. Last one E I mean Until the one. Well for the boys. For the boys. Bys, Mexico, the boys Amsterdam, the boys Japan all this so great. You like that type of shit, don't you That's what you want B bet you want the one in Japan That's when M K kind is really appreciated. What? Huh? Okay, anyway U okay, so all right Frch's funeral, we start with Chemical. Let's talk about the first exit of the soup that we see of a soup that we see, which is sage Charles, I'll ask you Everybody gets a goodbye here Some goodbyes are more momentous than others. Right. Okay. Now I know a lot of people have problems with chemical getting the powers of Soldier Boy basically in a one or two episode run. Yeah. but she has to. And Sage activates them Sage is then made stupid, then Asil Lvista Sj We say goodbye to Sage first. We'll go in order of the heroes we say goodbye to How do we feel about Sag's exit? on the show. I want to get terrible terrible. I was like I was like I want to preface this. This has been a turbulent ride for this season. I think overall they landed the plane with this finidale. I they l land l. I was just like I don't I don't know if the If the happy goodbye I would want for A black woman on the show who was the smartest woman would be like, I'm fraree from being smart. Also, does she really deserve a good ending She'sable. I don't know if she deserved a good ending, but I do think there was a level of it made sense that I'm dumb now. I can go out and live my free life because the weight of the smart is burdener. Sure is her burden. right? And go I get that. It just was a little bit I was like. Okay, they run we Dum means like she's slamming Taco Bell and then being like, Ohh, I'm going to Harry Potter lland. Well, I mean, that was kind of a They were kind of talking about us when they were doing that. It was very funny Yeah like a critique of the audience, almost or a critique of what they think that's like person from Wally almost as she became. So Interesting with her though is with her character, they've always done the most with her specific character to make it look like her powers were burt Yeah where they just talked about everything that she know she knew she say how she was treated because she was the smartest person on earth, the things that she had to live with. They always try to make it seem like she was somehow shackled to her power.. I mean, because she was the dumbest smart person that has ever existed on any show. Yeah So it always seemed as if she was struggling with it and it seemed like she was kind of free from it Yeah to to Steve's point though, like the fact that she like got like a happy ending for her is a little like, she was compllic in a lot of terrible. Yeah. And so the fact that she got to walk is a little silly, but I don't I understand why Kryp and T make that. I mean, I was confused evenven going back to the last episode It was almost like they didn't know what to do sister with Sister Sage. so she became likeike connected to the boys in a way where I'm like Butcher really stand when they're they got Frank's funeral and she's like out there like, you know, on the side. I'm like, whyy are you even watch? Yeah I still here.ike this is over. You've done your job. You can you can go. You don't have to be here for this. I thought that was a little like using her to like egg Kimico on to like make sure that the that the blast works quote unquote. It was a bit of a forced play but again, like Butcher signs on to anything so long as it achieves his end goal, which ultimately did work. I guess the sister stage thing, it like it was never really a fully realized character for me as far as like her powers and like the actual smarts of her So yeah, she doesn't really earn that happy ending I didn't believe that. Don't do that to Steve. I agree. Wait, low hang for. structurally though Do you think that you would have wanted instead of a lot of the bulk of the season being them trying to get the V one If they were all if Kimo getting Soldier Boys power was always going to be endgame, would we have rather have seen that for the bulk of this? Is such an obvious thing? I desperately want to have Kripi and the rest of the creative force behind the show on. If they start the show, It's such an obvious thing, not trying to write their show. but if they start the show with an entire arc. her trying to get these powers like Frenchie having to watch it her being ravaged Frenchy actually having to sacrifice for it. It just seems like It's way more effective And when I was watching this, I'm like, whyy didn't they just do that? It's weird that they didn't and so much so that I want to be able to ask why they didn't. I feel as if like this is One of the things that happens when you only have eight episodes versus like or sixteen or twenty two back in the day, right where you only have eight episodes to get this stuff in, you kind of have to smudge it all together. Here's the problem though You're wrong. Okay, I indict you. Okay, indict me. Because indict. that's a new thing indict you Iite you Iite indictments. I indite you. Okay The grand jury the grand jury? Eight episodes would be plenty enough time to run that Nowour episodes as well. Right. You can't do that and have Chemo and Frenchie's relationship maybe deepen because she can talk now So maybe you have to choose one of your s in that situation. But you 'use like A lot of what they did with her character was so that Frenchie's goodbye was better served. She has to burn a dule. She's in France. Now you can't do a lot of that stuff. Right. Maybe you can only do that for one or two episodes. You're saying swap it It just it just seemed like at the end that was such a big part of how this season reconciled itself that they could have spent more time with it. It felt like you right I mean, it was also, I think there was the Soldier Boy problem of it all whereere it's like giving Kimico Soldier Boy' powers when he is still in the show running around I think they were trying to be like, all right, we have this V one Butot because we need to give Homelander away Pysically be different. I don't age now. I'm a Godd And I think because Soldier Boy was standing next to him, if you add it on top They still have the virus. Now they're looking for the V one and now Kimico' trying to have powers. I think they needed to pick one and I don't know while they were making the season if because I've been reading a lot about fan criticism Anthony what Anthony Starr thought about some of the Trump stuff And I feel like the V one was their way and the religious White House angle was Krypti and Ko's way of being like, this season is going to be very much about Trump And I don't know if you could get there if you can get there if so much of it is Kim Coe getting solder Boyys' powers. Steve, are you about to indict Charles? You look like you're about? No I don' think it's about an indictment of Charles. I think it's more of a Like again, like the indictment of the season we've like we've made those problems of ours known. They should have whittled this down a lot more. I think like Soldier Boy barely being in this season if at all, would have been a benefit to the amount of oxygen that would have been given to more meaneingful character development come the end of this, which again is bit rushed, but it's good What do you guys feel like or Why do you feel like they abort it what it seems like they were clearly going to do. which was set up a dynamic where Soldier Boy was the one to take Homelanders' powers Because when you set up the fact that Soldier Boy can burn the V out of people's bloodstream and take people's powers then you make soldier boy to the theme that is able to render homeomelandnder mortal or normal or whatever But at some point They decided not to do that Right? Yeah. And they decideed to go with Chemicalo. Was that decision made because they Green lit a spinoff show with Soldier Boy? W that decision made because They got to a point in they They didn't want to really explore the father son relationship between Soldier Boy and Homelander More. but it seems like she became that because they decided not to do it with Soldier. I think it is as simple as We've been with the boys, we've been with Butcher and Kimiko and all these characters for so long. ends up being soldier boy who strips like thematically a father stripping his son of power works. I think for how much time we spent with that character, we would have all come in here and be like Damn I've wait I've been waiting this long to see this and Butcher or another member of the boys did not have a bigger role to play. So and I also think that is just what happens with a multi season TV show Especially in this landscape where it was like Soldier Boy was supposed to be able to take him down and then Ryan was supposed to be able to take him down and then Rie and it's like Yeah, but none of those characters are The boys. none of them are the crew that we've grown to love. Right. So it had to be one of the people that we love and so they give Chemical the powers. And then there's also like the far Rising thing The more I think about it, the more I think that like it's going to be one of those shows where they take him out of the ice. Yeah and he's going to be sitting there like man I remember back in my day like that's just one it that's what it's going to be like. And I think maybe in their how they're making that show, it doesn't work if he's the one. to ice out home. Interesting. Now okay, so then we get After that we leave and we have the assault on the White House, which is a fantastic sequence in this. I really like All father. wasas Godfather? Oh father? Oh father. Yeah. I really liked his character Really? I one. I would J He's the first character and the first storyline. I would have jettison from the entire season. I didn't want him to die U my because I enjoyed the portrayal. Yeah. I enjoyed K of the subversion of the very self centered mega pastor that is like latching on to Homelander. I also enjoyed There was a degree a degree of ambiguity with the character, like Homelander. We got to kind of do some of this stuff. But I'm just saying like his character I thought was pretty awesome in this episode as well, but all of the stuff when they got to the White House was amazing. I thought that entire sequence from the JFK sex tunnels. all the way to Killing Homelight. I thought that was like that was really that was really good TV in regards to like the character moments and like what they accomplished, you know, Annie, even Annie flying off with the deep, That whole sequence. I liked it. I really enjoyed it. How do we feel about Ashley and her comeupps She el she brought him me in. I kind of dug it actually, a little bit. Like ye, she probably actually deserved to get killed. With again, all of the things that she was complicit to and aided and abetted with Homelander But I found it very funny when she's just like, no, I'm not leaving office. I did nothing wrong. Immediately impeached and out of office. The show the show list the show does a really good job of not letting anybody slide. Yeah, right? Homelander obviously Butcher Ashley, if you were in any way cappable of like how like even I mean, the boys did their own like at their own things, but like if you were in that vault that center or Yeah they you got you got up out of there in some way Except for Stan, but remember Money, brother, capitalism always wins. Yeah. look I liked what I liked about it was as far as Ashley's concerned I liked that the show What the show did was something that we talk about like in the real world a lot Like what is somebody's breaking point in terms of like what they'll lookcept So Ashley was on for making the soups into these heroes, for making the soups into these cultural icons, for making the soups into these you know, larger than life figures. Everyone seemed to stop short at God Mm. And I think that's probably the biggest um a commentary that they're making on Donald Trump because Just in the real world, they're actually making Donald Trump into God. They're making Donald Trump into somebody whose will cannot be questioned, someone who is infallible, someone whose word is almost endnduring and eternal. like when you look at how his his people believe in him. and They are kind of pushing everybody to that limit and then everyone besides Oh Father basically broke before they got there and the deep who was kind of cast out. like everybody else, you look at Sage, you look actually other people like we don't know if we can do this. And it's the show actually became in these last couple of episodes for better or for worse, commentary on who would and who wouldn't And that's kind of what the finale ended up being. And Ashley, when she broke, I thought it was kind of meaningful It was nice to get her conscious back, you know Yeah in that moment, lock in help the boys I mean, again, she got a Cumppus, but I think to your point, it it was well learned But the deepest star light, Charles. That's what I thought the u episode started earnest. I was just like, okay, these are this is what. we've been waiting for this entire time I like You knew that at some point Annie in the deep were going to have to face off. And I do think that like remembering the first season I'm very surprised that the Dep became the character on the seven that lasted this long Yeah. That's a great point. You know what I mean? where it's like and and it would be fascinating to maybe track just when betrayal and that character was someone that was always going to have to be here for the series finale because also it gives what I think it did help is One thing that I think got muddled throughout a lot of the storytelling was the whole star lightighter Shit her becoming this rebel And Homelander had such a hatred for Starlight But I was like I don't know if it would make sense for Annie to be there for the last fight between with Homelander Yeah because Homelander and Butcher was always endgame. So I did enjoy that like Annie did get a lot of great moments and that to me felt like Not only a fitting ending, but I'm glad that we didn't get too much of Homeland or yelling at Starlighters. I was just like I was happy that we ended there. Yeah. I mean the correct like part of Annie's like The first dislusionment in the series is her going to the tower and being sexually assaulted by the heat Right? And so that just brings that storyline for Sarirl at the end and like Once they took off the air and landed by a beach, I knew exactly what was going do. Yeah. Do you guys think that One thing that I've been interested in in just like charting the boys is How I think in all TV storytelling because there's so many seasons Not only do the fans but the creators end up falling in love with the characters. And what I did find interesting that I think they struggled with is These people are abhorrent. so you start forgetting all of the bad things that they do. and this what this series finale, the reason I think it worked is because finally got to be like, o Yes, the deeep is a terrible person. Yeah. L He almost became such a sitcom character that it wasn't until this I was just like, o yeah, I have been rooting this entire time for Annie to like rock his shit. It's just like when he's on a podcast with Black N Noir and it's just jokes. It's just jokes. It's hard for you to like remember all of the shit because he's pathetic, right? Yeah. They make him so pathetic She actually gives him an opportunity She gives him a chance She looks at him. she pities him to a degree, but she gives him a chance to redeem himself because There's a part of her Despite what's happened to where she might not think he's all bad, right? She's like, dude You are like just in this ridiculously abusive relationship with Homelander Can you see that you're in it and he stops before actually being an actual person. And he does something that's very interesting to me from a story perspective is he abused her like legitimately took advantage of her the first second he got. but then tells her that she is the reason that his life has been destroyed. Yeah, which is an interesting kind of point when you look at the overall Mu movement, when you looked at the way people looked at the Mu movement, a lot of it was this hyper masculini Blaming the women saying that the women made the workplace a place where they can't grab ass anymore. likeike comment people you can't make jokesm. We can't make jokes anymore. L we were having fun until you got here, which in and of itself like assumes that you can only be U you can we can only have fun if we can abuse you Like that's the thing that we can have fun with. If we can't abuse you, then you like you can't be around if we can't debase and belittle you. H. She is like in that scene tootally unvictimized She's powerful. She's brought him out there. She's actually trying to get him to look at hisself and see how pathetic he is He chooses not to and then she has to do what she has to do. So like that scene their full circle situation. It hasn't been too much between Annie and the deep throughout the seasons. We haven't seen it as much in these in these later seasons, but they really did a great job in that in that in that end scene. And I even think like larger when we talk about just the arc of the boys I do think that it's interesting that it starts onene place in our political landscape where we were having these questions about Me to movement Black Lives matter. and you have That And then you get to our current political landscape where Maga You know, white supremacy for now has tria And all of these dorks and nerds who are like, well, if I just ran the world, I would make it better, finally get what they want and it all falls apart V is Vart is fucking A mess. There's no more seven Ryan looks at Homelander and is just like, no, you are not a Godd. People are just afraid of you And I thought one of the really great moments for Anthony Starr was when He's addressing the what he's addressing the public and he gets that line father the father line and he starts tripping up And he found like the mask. drops And he's just like, no, I'm a God. if you do not follow me, I'm going to kill all of you. I'm just like, yeah That to me is way more potent of a commentary because it's saying like When these evil fascists finally get what they want It's still never enough. They're going to burn the entire place down Yeah. Yeah that also is something I I feel like I want to step on Joe That's something I feel like would have been awesome if it came earlier in the season. Yeah. Well, they've always been threading that like, when you think about the boys as a whole, they've been threading that father that fatherhood thing from the jump, right? Like when you look at the end of the show and like, you know, we'll talk about how Hughie and Starlight named their baby. Huwie becoming a father. Huie's like a relationship with his father, Butcher being like a surrogate father for him what's his name? Soldier boy, Homeland or Ryan, Butcher as as Ryan's like so called dad But your relationship to his father These through lines have been like that through line of Father hadad has been weaved in through the story's narrative entire time and at the end we finally see like what it's like when somebody who has been like desperately wanting to wanting a father or wanting to like be a father Toally collapses And I thought like in that moment to get to your point when you se his father, I'm like,h That's going to set them off and it does It also forced him into authenticity, which is like kind of what the season finale gets at. L I think that as Home, I think homeomelander gotot sick of the bullshit as well. the Hlander over the course of this he, you watch. He resented having to pretend that he was this thing. Yeah. He resisted that as much as anything else And it was interesting because I think So like, you know, I love evvil Supermans. and when you read rreredeemable, which you guys, you know, don't like Iirreeemable, I don't know why But when you read irredeemable The thing that really drives the Plutonian crazy is that he's doing all of this stuff but he can hear people they're not appreciating them enough All he hears is people in other places that are saying, Hey, I need help, Hey, I need this. the Patonian wasn't here. He's like, what the fuck is going on with these people? Obviously the whole thing where the woman rejects him is one thing. It's the fact that people aren't grateful, that they don't buy in that he is a hero and that people don't buy into his heroism. That's a very human thing. Like a lot of times Even for us, we're on podcasts or whatever and we're talking with saying stuff that we think is righteous and we get something wrong And you look at people you're like, I'm fucking trying to help I'm trying to help. Why in the fuck are you kicking my ass? I'm one of the good ones Homelander always struggled with that He wasn't one of the good ones, but he was acting like it and people wouldn't like us accept him as such. they were still scared of him So at the end When he saw that, he was like, I'm not pretending anymore. That's something that pushes me to my authenticity. The father, something thing. I can't pretend anymore I will kill all of you. and be completely okay living here by myself So you have a choice. likeike let's get real. The choice is live as a subject to me or don't live at all. I don't give a fuck either way And if that would have come like earlier in the season It would have forced all the rest of the characters to make really desperate decisions about whether or not they could go along with it. Yeah. Well, where No no, and it's really just time. It's time to know when something like that can land and then given the time to reconcile with that mask coming off later to know that like, okay, when When Homeander gets his And we have our epilogue of like everybody basasically come to terms with Hughy and Butcher and then everybody going their separate ways I wouldn't want to like rel litigate the entire season to be like, okay, well what if we like Connors wedding it and we kill Homelander in the pen ultimate episode? And then we make an epilogue just entirely about the catharsis of everybody coming back after that. But time better spent in the emotional state of what Homelander does in the immediacy of declaring himself God While again achieved in this finale, I think could have been even better if we just had a little bit more time to do so That would be my main complaint. I will say My favorite parts of the episode were the catharsis of Homeland are finally dying. The thing I wanted, to your point even more time spent on was always knew deep down that Hughie was going to have to take Butcher out And that had been something in the series that they had always played with, which is Can Butcher be saved And I do like I did like from the storytelling perspective that Butcher finally gets everything he wants. He finally gets the revenge that he's been waiting for for his wife and everything that Home Landater did to her and their family And then justust at the precipice Ryan looks at him and be like, you're a monster too And then the only other creature on the world, his dog that loves him is now dead. I thought it was a great character turn for Butcher to just be like I can't have my happy ending No soups can have their happy ending. I just I wanted more of that. I wanted more of that struggle. I wanted more of Hughie being like, it has to be me.. And I was like, Tamn 'causeuse I thought that the acting was effective, everything about it But I left Walingmore. So I want to talk specifically about the Homelander and Hughy stuff a little bit later, excuse me, Homelander, but the butcher and Huey stuff a little bit later. But Homeland's death. So This is yeah, spoke that peag, babyorry stuff. Grace stufface stuff. So this is a couple of things. Number one I thought Homelander flying the Elon Musk guy to Spain. That was funny.er funny. Seventeen kids. I want to talk to you about my birth rate. I always was I knew Homelander had to die. I think we all knew Homelander had to die, right? Because the world's not gonna to be safe unless Homelanders die orless he's rendered powerless, right Yeah Leaving him powerless in the world would have been interesting, but Butcher would never go for that. Butcher would have to be dead. right now. Yeahah. soon as H home llander loses pers, but' is going to kill him The Homelander Death scene where he is completely unmasked as a superhero by the world because it's all caught on video And we realize all of his power It's synthetic. Yeah. It all comes from the V There is no dignity, there is no bravery U There is no sincerity. He is truly, truly, truly Gravel, dirt, nothing without his power. Yeah I thought it was phenomenal. What did you guys? I thought it was incredible, man. on his knees begging, pleading, I'll do this. I' I'll eat. I was like, this is the we've all known that that character was there. We knew exactly who he was in his final moments to see him to your like unmasked, to see him for what he truly was I was I was like, this is perfect. I even enjoyed there were like small moments when you're realizing, o, This is the first time ever he's had to take a real punch. This is the first time he's been in a fight and has not been the most powerful person And just like the quick realization of like, oh This is what Pain is, this is what it means to be human Similarly, I wanted more of that because I was just like, oh That is interesting because we don't get to see it a lot. like we get to see Supermandy powered in media a lot, but when it is an evil Superman de powered, you're like, it's a different thing because you're just like, oh You kicked all over your humanity. The thing that it's like when you get a paper cut, you're like Now my hour is ruined. Like he doesn't have to go through life like that ever. Right? No I mean, you're right. And U It was funny. When they were all having a fight and it was butcher versus Homelander soup versus soup. likeike this is a really great scene because the first part of the scene is soup fighting Yeah Soup versus soup versus soup. Homelander is trying to escape. When hes he'sical because he knows. Yeah he knows what's he's trying to escape And then Ryan shows up And then when Ryan shows up Homelanded then can't escape becausecause that's the one thing that he can't run from which is the fact that that's his actual son. That's his actual son And then he stays in it and because he makes an emotional decision, he loses powers. and then the scene switches. It's not suoup against sup anymore. It's like a dude against dude. And that's just like how much prepared how prepared you are for. But your in the lab Yeah. But your nose brothers. Yeah Do you this is the thing that like we always see in comics, do you think Homelander needed a Batman, you know, Batman be teaching Superman. He's like, hey, if you don't got your powers. Yeah, you got to little foo Yeah. Captain America be teaching Iron Man. He's like what are you without the suit? you like When Spider Man lost the Spidy sense, he had to go to IFS at Kunal and actually learn how to fight. Yeah. Did Homelander need to lock in with like a black noir or like somebody and just like really get his ship Yeah, but he would never do that. Yeah, never learn. He doesn justt want to learn. I mean you know I mean, the thing about home that it was never challenged Right? There was nobody strong or nobody who could like best him like that builds the superity superurity complex I can talk And so like, that's why like Dany's like, yeah, my God, who's gonna challenge me whatever Like it it all fades into the mindset. Plot hole though It's been so long since I watched it, but The season finale when Soldier Boy Blast Homelander It took a lot of time. Oh yeah. theno just does it and his powers are gone. I'm just like they're they play very fast and loose. I'm I'm going to say that was just like a truncated like, okay, we see the French Force ghost. She has the power of love and friendship on her side. And she's just able to do it in her own time. like I was able to balance Even that scene was incredibly moving. It was was very trying to leverage her rage and like her rage to make her like like unleash a blast, but it wasn't her rage that made her do it. It was like a really, really moving and effective scene. On the Chemo front though, I was a little disappointed and taken aback when Frenchy dies and then she just decides to not talk anymore And like that's a again like that's a It's reduced to a character affect, but I can understand why she now chooses not to talk, but it feels like a bit of a cheap run around to be like, okay, well now I'm back to the old chemico And this is now not like that party. This is how we're going to defeat Homelander and And I'm like Yes, that can be sold, but it can't be sold to me in like twenty minutes I think' it's a bit off. am I crazy? No, you're not crazy at all. I think the reason why didn't bother me that much is because The scene where he comes to like Remind her who she is is a reminder to her not to go backwards. Frenchie gives her permission to move forward to like he's not here anymore. She sees him He gives her permission to say, Hey, this was never who you were. and this is what I always saw in you Don't get weighed down by like rage or grief or whatever Go forward, have your life, and it begins right here and then she rises to the occasion So and I think her not being able to speak was or going back to that was her sort of retreating into who she was and what was comfortable for or who she used to be. It kind of undid the evolution that we had seen in the character and then he goes, no, don't do that. Start right now and become who you are. Um, all right. is very deep. Okaykay. So look, speaking of deep Before we move on deed Tal about plot holes Listen So the nigga, they fall out of the sky. right And then the sea creatures kill him by penetrating. Sometimes I don't understand these powers. So they fall all the way out of the sky, but that don't kill him But then he gets into the water. Right. And it's very funny, but octopus puts their fucking t tentacle through his through his his head. How could that happen? So you remember the first soup that they ever killed on the show? Translucent. How did they kill transranslucent? By going inside of his body threw a bomb in his but Yeah That's what they did. Yeah. That's what they did to the deep b is the weakness The buds the weakness. Remember when always the end game was coming out and they were like That man iss going to kill Thanos. B going small up in its butt and then becoming large, the butt is the weakness.' the weakness. is I do have a nitpick for that. If I have invulnerability, I feel like it would give me in an invulnerable butt hoolding guts I think so as well, right? What is because L cage Luke Cage's butt holle is probably bull for. No Luke Cagees is actually the opposite. Luke Cage is only the outside of his skin Cage. But this also opens up is about Superman though, the Superman have u invulnerable butthole Well this this is happening. He would have to he would have to have an invvolonment. But old father when he got shot Willie bounnce off them when they were shooting Chimico, Annie and Kimo iss not invulnerable. She just heals That's right Yes. So she's notulnerable. She just heals. So the reason So she was blocking the shots, but then she was just going. She was just going to heal. That's why he was carrying her out because she's just gonna to h heal. Homelander dies, everybody sees it. We wrap Homelander up in the middle of the show, which is very interesting. I was like, o, that means that they're going to service our characters after this that we get to Obviously Ryan gets his ending. He gets another ending later. Chemical, the boys all together. And then it comes back down to what the show is really about Yeah which is not A battle of humans versus Soups The show to me has always been about defeining the level of humanity that we all have And that is essentially what is the real schism between Huueie Butcher One of them is a human that has been mutated by their trauma and their strife and their desire and their ambition. and the other one And so then like what wins? Interesting thing. Before I throw it to you guys Killing all the soups is what Butcher always wanted. Yeah. Yeah ye. That's what he always wanted. There's always ten thousand soups out there. We don't need a world with any soups. He always wanted to kill all the soups The real failing of Butcher's character is that he didn't change is that even though he was around Annie, even though he was around Chemo, even though he himself had been a soup, he still didn't change Cheewy stayed the same and that was a good thing. Butcher stayed the same and that was a terrible thing. Right. I mean, there's nothing more realistic than A white man losing his dog and then wanting to take it out on the world out godamn. That was sad though Very sad telling you is we down bath We're really losing dogs this year. We killing dogs. Daredevil no not daredevil punishing. Punish p This this, we killing dogs. story, man. Do we need to to be in danger. This is John vicification. of action where it's like any single time you meet to show that' someone going through it You just killed on.ame The James Gun spepecial. I don't think it' I don't think's that. I think that like, We as people attach like a different level of love and certainty innocence to animals. Right? You heard a human? I really enjoyed it how they handle GenV In this all universe is a failing of the show. And When they drove off the truck, I was like, oof, this is tough. This genuinely feels mean spirited and kind of fucked up. Its I don't know mean spirited, but I think it's We talk about universes and we talk about, you know, the MCU and the DCU and how like all these things are all encompassing and all Everything should matter Right? If you watch a show, this is like one of remember one of our first big arguments Uh on the Meni booys was Are the Disney pllus shows as credit or not? Right required. You have to watch them to also watch movies. I was like, no, you guys, you more specifically were like, Yes, because what's the point of it if they're not. Right? If we don't have to watch them, then what are the Actually if we litigate that You know what I'm saying? Be this prove point Yeah. They treated the GMV character like we watch a GV show, we like man these guys, man. but we gonna come in and do something. Jordan, all these people, man season season five or the boys, they're going matter Guess what Not only did they not matter, they had them ds on the sideline in the warmups didn't even get them didn't get no real burn And then when it was time for the big moment, they were like, Hey, man, thanks for coming out. I woered why like I dis agree like Hey yo couple with us where we give something. If anything, they'd be more involved in the first half of the season when it wasn't all super dire. And then at end maybe because to your, I think one of us mentioned before, it has to be Homelander and Butcher. It has to be Huuey and Butcher. It has to be Annie versus the deep. That I get. you do have to ship those characters off But they have to play some sort of role when the last time we saw these characters in genenV, it was like, she can kill Homeland. But R is one of the only suoups ever created that can kill Homelander. And she she's in two episodes this season. And the last thing we see over is driving M Daisy Chauffur. Yeah. So I don't have big problem with the Jimy characters not being prominently featured in this character in this season. I don't have a big problem with it. The reason why is there's just so much going on Now, if you don't do a whole V one thing Maybe not, maybe you have more space, but then if you don't do that, then Homelander can' become immortal If Homelander can't become immortalally can't become gos. we got to do There's a lot going on. So I will say this though Those characters I think that they might have known that GimV wasn't going to be around way longer than they than they let on. because they sacrifice having the Gen V characters in this season for having Soldier Boy and having bomb sight and have other characters like that in the season, characters that have a future in the universe My big concern or my big complaint, should I say, about the GMV characters is it would be so interesting to see them in the world that exists now. Yeah. Yeah. like as with no homelander W the mask being pulled off of the soups, you wonder, legitimately wonder. What happens at Galcan, right? You wonder what happens with Marie. She doesn't even have to run anymore Hind is gone Like a lot of this stuff is say, but like Vugh is going to reorganize Stan Edgar in his role now The boys is going to look backwards with Vault Rising and they're going to look away The Bys Mexico There is so much story for the GimV characters like right Now that it's a really odd decision to cancel Do people care at this point? And I mean, when Homelander is gone, That's the interesting thing. Is there enough story? We like like, yes, take. Are they gonna care about them in the fifties Are they doing that So I'm saying, so so, so I mean, I mean to your point, I don't know But like Im not bad I stepped on you. No, but like but First two seasons or the only two seasons of GenV were very much built in the Homelander is towering over all of this. Certainly Yeah. And now I'm just like when I think about like the boys Mexico or vought Rising, there is a little bit like Darth Vader is in here I don't care I mean, I'm not saying that that's not true. That world does revolve around or did revolve around Homelander. I personally still I really interested. And what happens in this world now And I got to be honest with you. despite what anyone would say I don't know if we've heard the last from this world don't know if we have, man. I current timeline of the current timeline. I mean, obviously the Boyys, Mexico is coming. sureure, right? I don't know if we've heard the last from this world. These characters are still around, man. like Hueie' still around. Starlight is not just still around Starlight is still fighting crime So it's not like they retired everyone. they didn't take Starlight powers, they didn't take Chemical's powers. they didn't end soups I do not know They are completely done with this this particular time. There's and you have the call with the new president to Hughie and he's like, you want to run the anti or the Soup task force? He's like, no, I'm good that if If we were in a real country man That would just lead into JMV season three where maybe those kids take part in that, right? Maybe they, you know, like in a post homelanded world, they're helping out, making sure like soupps aren't going crazy or whatever. Maybe they go back to Gulk and you. mayaybe it doesn't exist anymore. Who knows. But like that help sets up the future for those characters in a post homeand. Tony Stark problem though The minute you take Tony Stark out of the MCU, It's a shaky proposition and you spend so much time trying to be like Okay, what is the center of our universe Now is the center Huey and whatever the permutation of the Bys is? Is it Marie because like technically she is what now the most powerful soup on the planet If Jen V is to be corrected. Is it Soldier Boy getting unfrozen and Stan Edgar being like Captain America now I could see any of those. I don't know if Any of them can just replace that Homeland Butcher dynamic.ight. I'll say this before we move off this and get into the Hughie Butcher situation is Um, What you're saying is correct. you're absolutely right Big shoes to fill. I'm telling y'all right now Two years from now Three years from now The economy's doing better Amazon still like they're not parent they're not like pruning shows. They're like building shows. Wh should they come back to it Watch The boys or GV. the Not necessarily GV. mayaybe those characters, but this world of the boys. I mean the boys Mexico mightost post homeomeland, Postomeland death The boys in Mexico might be doing. W they come back to? L on what happens after Maybe not a whole season, maybe not eight hours worth, but like definitely like, an hour in change of like what this world looks like for those characters. For to lead into Hughie and Butcher, I couldn't help but feel when Butcher is like really proclaiming that all soups need to die And Hughie won't let that happen It really did feel like it was an ideological battle of like, hey, the superhero era needs to die right now in pop culture And Hughie is not letting that happen. And in a way, the show kind of still kept held that water. interesting way. Spider Man and dooms that coming out, Bro I'm gonna be there on. I know, I get it I mean, maybe. I think that I think that's an interesting That's pretty interesting I think that more so You do that, but then you kind of step on that by leaving superheroes in the world and the last thing that you kind of see in this is somebody actually flying away. Exactly. Yeah Butcher versus Homelander thing, excuse me, the butcher versus Huuey thing life almost broke me emotionally. It was really, really good. It like it almost like it almost got to me because I like, I kind of feel for butcher. Butcher was too broken to survive. He had like he was too It's I don't want to say it wasn't Butcher's fault because he did so many terrible things. many Yeah. but like This is kind of this this conversation I'm always having about humanity Look what wound him up His starting point was being broken. H hisis starting point was losing his wife to this all powerful thing that everybody was saying was a hero. He lived his trauma every single day. Every time Homelanders saved someone Every time he saw a billboard of Homelander, a picture of Homelander, every time Homelander was on the news, the whole deal, he had to relive the fact that this is the person that like killed his wife and made him into this thing It was all consuming and he just couldn't come back from it. and the person that had to deliver him to the hereafter likeike was the original victim of this particular show Butcher I have a Walter White problem where the whole time I was watching it, especially blog post losing his powers. I'm like Wait, where were you dying? Like they did I kept being like, I thought butcher had like supercancer Yeah something. But I think the super I think, oh, the super canancer he had because of the superpowers. Yes. Yeah. I don't remember how it went away, but I think that should kind of did I don't becausecause the whole season, they weren't really they brought it up a little bit, but I'm like Last time we saw you, you were sick as hell and you were dying. But there was a bunch of shit like that that they just kind of like and the Tem and like Yeah. there was a bunch of shit that they kind of just didn't do. They just kind of got away from it. They just decided and I really do in my heart of hearts and I don't know anything in my heart of hearts. I believe it's because There was one part of this where they thought maybe they were going to be Once they were done with this show, they were done with this world And then they weren't. And like and they just they decided to Use this to launch other characters and blah, blah, blah, repeating my I I think the Homelander took up a lot of oxygen in the just the series uh and the homeland or butcher of it all Becauseuse we forget like The basis of this whole show is Huie and Butcher Right? Like they meet And the show the show takes off. And to see them like Butcher and Hughie clasp her hands And Hughy, like I don't know if I think Huey actually does believe this like you're not you're not so bad of a guy, man. You just got dumbed tough head I didn't want to have to do this, but it was this like your point was always going to have to be like this Somebody was going to take you out. probably going to be me because who else could do better. This this show, this particular show showed just how like dangerous butcher is Butcher looked less dangerous because he was in a world full of soups But if you ain't got no superpowers and you find yourself in front of butcher, you fucked Homelanded. He took that gun from Hueie, smacked Huie around And then couldn't do it. His last bit of humanity is what killed him Just like really great story. the vision of his little brother.w his last bit of humanity He's like f is like what killed him And he was he was like, he sat down. he goes I'll know what to do now Like he it was over and he's like, you don't have to do anything. And it's It's like, it's almost oneonder for one except for like a couple of key differences. But I think the thing that this scene gets right that that scene this scene in the boys that Game of Thrones doesn't is that We see Butcher, be human likeike one last time Right? We don't see, we don't get that for Danny Right? That's a character that we loved and we cared about and we really believed could be something, could be good. It was able to create a comedy. at least superhero comedy, a type of humor, a type of superhero action Um And then Homelander Homelander has become one of the big bads of American pop culture right now. And in order for the show to be truly successful, it had to be able to do that So to me, the boys overall whichich is why we saw, you know, the attempt to expand the universe overall was a resounding success to your point. actually kind of established Amazon as a legitimate streamer of original content was that show. This is to me Amazon's house of cards. This is Amazon's Pos This is Amazon. I'm not saying it's legitimately on the same perch of those shows show after show, quality after quality, but this is their show that showed that they could make a show like this and have it reach audiences in this mass way. I think the character trait of Hal Jordan making a a denomination of money with the brring is very on character U I don't know if it works like that though. It probably doesn't, but to make they're the ringss work. No they're rs just a light construct. So if you put it in a jukebox Nothing would happen. No, but if if you make life construct. Yeah. It isn a like construct, but I but like it's more than that though. But it's a physical shape and form. No, it has like physical shape, but it it doesn't have like the physical shape of like touch of money. I think that what they are trying to do like maybe subtly in that scene is demonstrate how much mastery Jordan has over the ring. I guess Ethhos of the show L you said, the show seems to be mixing the elements of that kind of true detective very grounded procedural, not procedural so much as it is like, you know, detective story type of situation Now we're seeing that there are a lot of fantastical elements in it in terms of like you don't see a lot of lantering type of things. Do we know about the story? Do we feel like we know is this Um John and is this the origin story for John is de Green Landon That way we're watching. seemes to be Yeah training montage, coaching up But I'm also like confused because in actual comic book lore The Green Lantern ring is something that like you get esssentially like either passed down to you when another like green Lantern dies or they're searching in the sector, when that sector's Green Lantern perishes or whatever And for this one, it seems like Howal is almost trying to train Stewart to take his ring, but he's not dead Am I misreading the No, that's exactly exactly what I'm like I don't know the circumstances about the show, but it it seems like that H's like even a tad bitit possessive of the ring so far is like you're definitely not earning this right now. Is he trying to ret Is he retiring from being a green Lanter? Is is Pals ring what is or just a ring. Maning is because at one point we see John Stewart Holding The lantern. Yeah the actual. But we also know that H' been green Lantern for a very long time a very long time. So is is he trying to get his ring or is he trying to just like earn him through to where he's going to get his own reign. att the end of this isal Jordan going to not be a green lantern anymore and there's going to be John too because it's never real because we got Gy Gardner, right? Guy Gardner is in this trailer as well. Yeah. So obviously there's more than one green lantern. Is that even in the same timeline though Okay theoretically, we don't know. Is that like is what's happening right now what we're watching? And this show happening in the present day? Is it happening in the future? Yeah. Is it like like when like when is it? obviously some of this takes place long ago, we see a little version of him and we see him, he's younger, at least we're looking back in some kind of way. So like when is any of this even going? So apparently there are two timelines in the season onene of Lanterns, according to this Entertertainment Weekly article with one of the showrunners of lanterns. Not Lind Loft. I got to sc all the way back up U with Chris Mundy And he talks about how there's two timelines in the show. and I imagine that let me see of We're likely seeing like a past Yeah with like there are a bunch of other people from thethology from the Canon, but not other lanterns. We're going we talk about them at different times but they're not going to interact with them in the course of this season Um, it becomes like there's a second mystery becausecause there's apparently like there's a murder that happens. And so I think like it'll be that and then maybe somethingomet about how or or John, Right? I don't we don't exactly know, but yeah, it's so a point like There's going to be stuff in the past there's stuff in the present that we're going to just to be like watching at the same time the repeating line, are you afraid Are you afra Semester, obbviously Yeah, because how, you know, trayed by suestion, rightight? And so like, if you're gonna like That's a tough thing. We talk about u Uh, like with villains and I don't How many green lanner villains outside of Sinestro can we? C we really count? Man hunters. Yeah Red Lantern Cps I mean, the Green Linter in and of itself is it's a really interesting character with an interesting backstory and lore surrounding everything that happens with the Lanterncps, but the Green Lantern is more of a in the larger scope of DC. probablyably supporting character Disapping character, but like that is why h, if you're building out a superhero universe right now Maybe you lean on something like the Green Lanon because there's more land to farm with Green Lanon with no less. Do you think that DC needs more of a unifying aesthetic? Similar to how the MCU developed where it was like the MCU did a very, very good job of basasically being like We're going to make it so that Ironman and Captain America and Thor can all be in the same frame and it does not look weird And lanterns looks a lot different from Superman and looks a lot different from Supergirl. do think that that's something that James Gunn is actually proud of and is trying to be like, no, all of these aesthetics are going to be their own thing. We are not going to MCU almost paint by the numbers I think they see I don't know anything, but I think DC is probably learning lessons from their own world and not from the MCU. Yeah. And if you're learning lessons from their own world then the lessons that you would be learning is that that type of uniformity was ultimately a bad thing U that type of uniformity with Zach who I love a lot ofZack Snyder's movies. I have a lot always say that Zach like having you know, all of this stuff looking kind of the same way and feeling the kind of kind of the same way. It actually ended up being something that hindered them because when you put Wonder Woman in the Justice League, it didn't seem like the same Wonder Woman. It didn't seem like the same type of story.. And so I think that they are probably going to use It's going to be harder.. But I think that they're probably going to use sort of the diversity of the looks and themes and stuff as a strength to say that all of these different characters can exist in this same world. Now when you thread those characters together, your narrative is going to have to be strong. But I think if anything, they're probably learning from you know, lessons from their own universe and not necessarily from the MCU because the MCU did it perfectly. Right. And they are also very draconian about it. Maybe they were bare on four, but Josh Whedon jumped off it. It's like can't do anything like they have too much control. Yeah. So they were very draconian about it. I don't know if Gunn is that interested in doing the same thing, orr maybe I'm wrong, who I mean he's a director. I think he probably is interested in being like, I got to let directors direct. That's probably true. he probably believe he probably believes a little bit more of that I mean, look Stewart is an interesting lantern You know, a boring winter.
