We bring you news from the world of science fiction and fantasy and of course, awesome discussions from fans just like you. I went to a con and I got crud. Oh, wasas that Vegas? Yeah, TMS, Vegas, Scott Johnson and Brian Ebbts thing. I'm not sure I got it there though 'causeuse I didn't come down with it until I'd been back home for like five days Oh, that's probably not likely then. yeah Yeah. And my neighbor said she has the flu And I'm like, oh saw her earlier maybe that's where. Wow, bummer. And you said you feel really tired today, right? Oh my Godd. Yeah. So I was feeling a little better, but my symptoms were kicking in. And then I went to the dentist And as soon as they got back to the dentist stff it was just like really tired. I'm sorry. You think you might have the flu and you went to the dentist. They told me to come In fact, they told me to come. I had an appointment next week. They said, wouldould you like to move your appointment tomorrow? I'm like, I might have the flu. They're like, That's fine What? Yeah We all learn nothing Did we learn nothing? I don't know Maybe they're likeing right now. They're like we have great ventilation and we all wear masks. It's fine. comeome on in Okay. I don't know. It seems seems fine though, they're fine with it. Well, I guess good on. There was no else there but industry people. I didn't, you know hang out with other people. so Yeah. All right. And the next time I took my mask off was obviously when they cleaned my teeth because, you know Yeah. Well, I appreciate you wearing a mask. That's good. That's good Um What are you gwing Today. First of all, wait, how are your teeth Oh, my teeth are good. Good new dentist too. Because insurance won't cover my old dentist and my old dentist was in my neighborhood. I'm like well, did accidentally kill the last one with germs Juryiess I'm not convicted, so no. You can't prove anything Got it. No, he retired. And also, his daughter took over and the insurance doesn't cover them. and it's a forty five minute drive So I'm like, well if the insurance isn't going to cover it, I'm just going to go somewhere closer. So That's what I did F enough. Anyway, then I filled my brand new clean teeth with Perilla oil buckwheat noodles. I don't understand. What do you mean What do you mean What do you mean? What are you say? I know I know those words separately. Yes. I know Pilla oil and I know what buckwheat noodles are. I don't understand the combination of those. use Parilla oil with the buckwheat noodles and soy sauce and seaweed and onions and some cucumbers. And then you create a delicious noodle dish, actuallyually, Eileen creates a noodle dish and says here, eat this And it's nice on the. have to be. Oh. Oh that's beautiful Does it have to be Parilla Uh no, the pererilla oil has a really good flavor and it goes well with the buckwheat noodle. but if you don't if you can't get Parilla oil, you could try something else like sesame oil. It probably work okay. Okay. Yeah. I would eat that. I love buckwheat noodles. Oh yeah, they were so good. But of and my teeth are filled with sesame seeds now Yeah, yeah. we'll floss later, you'll be fine. Exact. I am having another gitentonic. Same drink as two weeks ago. So you don't eat I just just GNTs. Just G andTs. G andT all day long. your new diet book's coming out soon so sad No I haven't This is the first g tonic I've had since that last show, I'm pretty sure. But what makes it special is that I'm using elderflour syrup that my friend Jocelyn made. Oh nice. That's really cool. Yeah we didid they grow the elder fllowers too or am I pushing? I think she might have foraged them. Okay. Yeah. She's a pretty adept forager Um And so she brought a bunch of little vials of that or to make a. It sounds delicious. Really good. Yeah, super gummy Very nice. That's it. Yeah, That's what I'm know. Buckweat noodles and Jin and tonic folks. what's not to love? There you go. All right, everybody, let's hop into the quQick burns I'm so sorry, everybody But there's another Hugoos thing. In fact, everybody posting this, everybody posting this in the quick Burns was like I'm sorry, but there's a Hugos thing U Hugo administrators resigned in the wake of a chat GPT controversy, Uh this is for the Seattle edition of the World Science Fiction Conventionor World Con They used Chat GPT for background checks on information about the participants Uh Okay. they do you they were like trying to find panel members Nothing to do with the Hugo awwards. U Tryke wrote, but it's very much a case of Read the Room guys. Pe don't like AI, especially the artists from whose work the LLMs have stolen to create their database. Elizabeth wrote looks like the difference between the con And the awards presented there needs to be highlighted. It seems the LLM use was by the World Com team, not the Hugo' team, and the Hugo's ad administrators resigned in protest Oh o. Yeah. Okay U Okay I know I'm all over the place on this As an author, I have no problem with the way these models are trained But I know If I were to sit down with most of the authors I respect they would eviscerate me and hold my heart beating heart in front of me and say you are wrong because they feel very passionate about this. and I respect that. My personal belief is we need new rules for how this sort of stuff is trained don't feel like it steals my work But on the other hand, I think if most people want to be asked permission, maybe we should ask permission U That all said donon't know I respect the Hugo administrators saying, we have a line in the sand and we're going to abide by it I don't know that I would have done the same. That's just me As always, Tom, your take is very measured and thoughtful Thank you I agree with you That's it That m's the whole That's the whole thingink That's the tweet. That's the whole tweet. Yeah Yeah, I agree with you. I respect their decision I think that it is a it's a hard line. It's a hard line for sure Um I think AI is a tool. I think we're still figuring it out. and I don't know if I personally also would have made that choice for myself And no way' wrong I'm willing to be convinced that This is the right move. It just doesn't seem like it to me, but yeah, you're my thinks I need more Gen andonic to have a stronger opinion Yeah, I think is what he's in. Yeah. I think that's probably right Ininuating rather. That couldn't go wrong. Stephven said uh SP FB O or self published fantasy blog off ten or Siffo ten has a winner. It's B Blood by Salt by J L. Odum. Oh, SpiffBow. Times announced their winners of the twenty twenty four book prizes with the science fiction Fantasy and Speculative Fiction Award going to Kelly Link for the Book of Lo. Interesting choice because the good Reads reviews are decidedly mixed. Well, you know, sometimes things are A little more A little more subjective. I just haven't come across your work yet and now I have. Congratulations on your award. I look forward to learning more about you in the future I'm trying to be a better interternet person, you guys. You're no good.' I'm trying to be balanced. I'm trying to like Yeah Not talk smack on people. Do you like the new murder bot Clips. I haven't watched them and I haven't really' going friend's house watch It's an interview with Sarsgard So he talks about Skaz Gad. like inhabiting Murderbot Um Pulset didn't really think of the crew as space hippies, which is how Skarsgard describes them. I just thought they were good people Does that make me a spaceyie Probably. Yeah, they might. I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily I can see that. I think the way that their society is described, especially by murderbot throughout the books, the novellas is very Utopian hippie esque for that world, you know, I've that I hadn't thought about it, but I think in my mind I sort of assign the crew Millennial and boomer motivations and Murderbot GenX motivations Okay. Okay Yeah. I can I can kind of see that Yeah, yeah No, I'm really excited and my friends down the street are gonna have us over for a watch party That's exciting. That's fun. On Premiere Night, so' I'm I haven't been this excited about a show in a long time. I'm really I thinkinks it looked good. I was like, what do you think of this trailer? Tld me if you don't like it. it's like, No, it looks good. ust. I'm been trying to get Ryan, my husband to read at least the first one in advance But he hasn't had time yet Okay Ian says the final book in Philip Coleman's Book of Dust is coming out in October The possibly last book in Lyrra' Story, which started in Northern Light. It's been a long wait. Yeah, I mean, we thought the first trilogy was the last in Lyra' story, so never say never. but yes, this is the end of the planned experience and that's great. I haven't ventured into the new series, so maybe I have knower. Yeah, this this article over on Reactor says Finally, six years after the secret Commonwealth, the final book in Philip Pullman's The Book of Dust series is almost here The Rose field is due in October And this is after Lya is grown up So this is years after Amber Spyglass, which is the third book, I believe in the original trilogy So it's's it's a little more adult, I believe. Yeah Yeah. was the, uh, um The goolden compompass our first read It was an economic or no, I mean no American got it was either Amer Golden Compass was our first first read, I believe. One of them was the first podcast read onene of them was the first book cllub read and I can't remember which one was which. I think Golden Compass was the I wantan to say it was the first podast because the movie was coming out No, it was the first one October two thousand seven And then American Gods was the first podcast. Neuromaner came after that Endnder's game was number two Iot that one way quick. That was a long time ago. Yeah it was a long, long time ago. U All right, and is that it? Did I finish No. Okaykay. you've got the last one. Matt Dinnaman will be at the San Diego A H happyy who is in the chat right now That' right? I'm not not going You were fine at the beginning of the show But suddenly you're a little like slippy feel like the old vaginal fantasy dase My husband just left. I don't know where he's going. You left the house? He just left the house? Oh no In the car. Yeah, well It's probably fine. And your son is asleep, I assume. Yeah. yeah, that's fine. Yeah going off for a pack. If he wakes up, it's fine. we can pause Should we do beury your sword then Let's do it. It is time for Barrier Sword, which is our feedback from the audience U Ywn wrote, Hi everyone Hi Jn. My barrier sword for the episode, I am still here. I just don't have time to scour the net for news and post them in the GoodreadsQuick Burns thread as all my waking moments are dedicated to listening to the master himself Jeff Hayes, reading the Dungeon crawler Carl books to me. I am at the Gate of the Feral Godds and already dreading when I am through with the available books. Thanks for getting me hooked on the series I think this is actually the first time I have continued after a Sord and laser Wow the first time. Yeah. That's wild. That's crazy. and I couldn't pick a better series. I're also at the gate of the f. I am also I am a That's before right for Patrick ten off Feral gods? Yeah Yeah. I'm my mom for as well Yeah, you're you're beating me a little bit. You're ahead of me. But I'm got behs twenty five minutes. You finished Mickey seven. I have I did seven. So I delayed to go through. I've been trying to make myself listen to Mickey seeven once a day and I'm enjoying it. I actually like it But I don't like it You don't like the experience of listening to it as much, on't you say? I think that's it. ye That's it, That's it. That's all. It's a good book. It's an interesting book Ruth said, I actually really enjoyed the parts where the AI talks about feet It's just the right balance of gross humor with the underlying sense of god damn, my whole planet has been destyed. Nearly everyone I know is dead have' been forced into a deadlyungeon crawl for the entertainment of intergalactic sickos and capit it all off of' being perved on by an artificial intelligence with a footfetish You know, that'll trp that trope , There's the swword and Laser custom. That looks good. That hat is sick. Yeah. Oh like it That's cool. That's super cool. U Anyway, I agree with Ruth. I actually think that the feet thing is really funny It's disgustingly funny It cracks me up every time. It makes me uncomfortable and cracks me up It doesn't make me uncomfortable. Oh, it makes me uncomfortable in all the right ways. Yeah No, I think I' supposed to. Here you go Yeah. It's supposed to make Yes, it's effective. Right? It's like you smell this kind of thing You know what gives me the ick? What? I hate it when How do I say this right I hate it when my husband wants me to try something that he's cooking or eating. And he tries to like put the spoon in my mouth without like giving me a second to like look at it And like I hate I always go like I recoil like Because I don't know what it is. Get it away. Get it away You're inviting my space But I'm not a picky eater. I just don't It's the one that you want you want to see what's coming. I want to see what's coming. I want to have control over the situation. Yeah, it's your control freak. What? What? I'm actually not a contual. I don't think you are I don't think I am. N at all. She says being a product manager That' fine I guess it's different. a project manager, that's totally different. That's where control freaks are. That's where the control freaks are, please Anyway, PM You're funny, Ruth. I love it. Turp says, I'm glad that so many people enjoyed Dungeon crawler Carl. It wasn't for me, but I enjoyed listening to this episode I also likek Tom's impression of the new achievement soundbpe. Oh, thank you, Tob Kristen I makes me smile I'm gl. Does that mean I got a new achievement You have to get it you have to make it sound a little like I know my cold isn't helping. Oh achievement. Achievement. Yeah. Turp Kristen likes your impression. I don't think it's that good, but she did Reward Whatever. Getting this cheap praise is its own reward ood. Thank prettyty good. Yeah. Yeah cont more than the sound. I think the content was my im my Yeah My imitation is not not spot on, especially Steven says I ripped through all the books last year, one right after another until I had a short wait for book seven this inevitable Ruin. The series has surprising depth. There are some minor characters that are still a mystery even after seven books. Also, if you laser folk don't want to claim DCC, I will gladly put it on the sword side I have so few science fiction writers, I eagerly await their next book I thought you would like one more. Thank you, Stephen Nice, nice. Yeah Well, thank you to everybody who submitted stories for Quick Burns or things for us to talk about for Burner sword Thanks for supporting our pivot to being a Dutch and Crawler Carl fancast probably exists, right? Oh, it definitely does. Yeah Yeah I haven't I haven't looked into that yet. I'm too scared of spoilers. so maybe after I finish the series I'll go back and Oh yeah point. Content Find that content about the things that I'm passionate about d d d Let's talk about the book of the Mth. All right pooor little Mickey seeven So alone. I didn't even put I didn't even put Mickey Seven in the links. You didn't? No I'm so Enamored with Carl. I apologize Mickey seeven. All right. yeah. Yeah. this is'reiv we're giving this book a bum rap. All right. we are not going to be spoilery, but we are going to talk about Mickey Seven. As I mentioned, I'm Uh third of the way through and you're finished, right? F I listened to it in like three or four days. It'. it went through fast. It's fast. Yeah, it's like n I I liked it. I did like it. Yeah. and I like it too It starts different than I thought I think a lot of people are like, yeah, I get the gist. and then you're like, o, this is different So they immediately switch up what your assumptions might be. So I think that's good uh, and then the sort of like, you know transporter problem has a whole new aspect to it is what I'll say to not be spoilery. So yeah, I think it's really good and I'm enjoying it so far Um, We got a thread from Seth called phhilosophical job training. O thing I found interesting was during his training to be an expendable, Mickey gets a little philosophy, the whole shhip of Theseus discussion This struck me as a rather obvious way for the author to introduce some of the philosophy he was thinking of into the book. But perhaps this isn't unheard of. Has anyone ever had on the job philosophical training before And if you don't know, Shpithheseius is the idea of If you slowly replace parts of a ship. Be never replace all of them at once But eventually you've replaced all the parts Is it still the same ship Yeah, versus the ship getting into an accident and you have to rebuild the ship and it is still And this is true for us I mean, they don't really did they talk about this in the book or is this just something I know where like every ten years all of our cells turn over Anry mostost of them. and so are we the same person that we and I are at the same't even you met us. Every seven Yeah. seeven. Mickey seven That's why it's seven? I don't M mayaybe was Pident Daves says phhilosophy has not been part of my training in the forty years I've been in mining We get like ethics training. it's not the same Ethhics is a philosophy, but the kind of ethics training you're talking about is usually not very philosophical. It's more like do's and don'ts But yeah, Phil pointed that out HR services for ethics Yeah, a lot of people mentioning ethics But you're not learning philosophical ethics, right? You're learning practical ethics Don't sexually harass your coworkers. Yeah. that's not And like don't take bak. That's not the philosophical ethics, which is, you, what is the meaning of morality? Like you don't get that from HR Don't tell all of our company secrets. Yeah That's that's that's really what I'm doing. prracticaluff Exactly Yeah, and actually Licarish had an interesting thread about the ship of Theseus So he says, okay, so we need a SOT discussion, Chhip of Theseus The book asks whether or not the expendables are effectively immortal, Is it really you if you die and are recreated As a reminder, Theseus was a Greek king who took a ship on a pilgrimage to honor Apollo By the end of his journey, he had replaced all of the original components on his ship. So was it still the same ship I think the book glosses over some very important points that don't fit into the typical Ship of Theseus philosophical discussion. As Ian Vertram points out in another thread Only one scan is ever made of Mickey's body and it is done at the start of the journey. So how exactly would that work Your brain would have changed considerably in the intervening years In shhip of Theseus terms, you build a ship. Then you take it to the other shipbilders and have it modified. Then over the course of intervening years, you replace all the parts, but do it in a way that makes it identical to the original ship the modified one He goes on to say more, but I get into spoiler territory. so I cut it short I feel like There are there's more than one Question to deal with here Uh, and And what Licorice is doing is narrowing it to say, well, the body isn't So now it's different. but I think what we're getting from the author is Let's focus on the mind. Let's let's take the body out of it U let's focus on you as your memories, which is just a different way of posing the problem If you are like, yeah, but I want to know whether if you change the body out if you're the same, that's just a different problem and it's not what Aston is dealing with here. He's dealing with the more like memories and mental part of it O Ashton, I should have said Ashon. I have a question Yeah I am not I'm familiar with The shhip of Theseus story. Yeah used to take it to is in Okay, but my question is and this is going to get kind of deep and I'm a little fuzzy right now How Why is this a M Why is this story important? Like why Before we knew about transporters. Yeah and cloning like why did people care about whether or not the ship was the same ship? It's not about just totally It's not about you so much. And The ship of Theseus originally was just a puzzle Okay, if you go on a journey and you keep replacing parts and at the end of the journey, none of the original parts are there, is it the same ship 'cause the ship never occurred to me right before you started toing exactly what I was And o, sometimes we just wonder things because we're people and humans. And it was kind of a riddle of like, oh, is it the same ship? Well, it's not because none of the parts are the same, but it never sunk, it never was destroyed So it was a continuous ship. And I think there is something about like, oh, as we age and grow, our parts change and fall off. and maybe there's a little bit of that there, but it's not obviously about transpters I'm reading the chat. they're getting so nerdy tonight They are Very, very nerdy right now Early impressions about characters from a robberator, no spoilers again Rober Rer says I'm about nine chapters in and I don't find any of the characters likable, including Mickey. Am I the only one? I'm interested in the story though, so it's keeping my interest, but typically my favorite books have memorable characters that I'm rooting for or rooting against. I don't dislike anyone enough to be rooting for their demise. But I don't really care who lives or dies at this point Hmm, I see that. Yeah This is a much more plot. philosophical situation oriented book than character I think I'd like to Mickei more towards the end than I did in the first half of the book. That's interesting Personally, that's just me. Yeah But I'm with you. I'm about the same place that Rberator is, honestly. and' I haven't I thought that while I was reading, but now that he points it out, I'm like, yeah, the characters are a little bit, they're not as deep as they could have been, but it's not bothering. And I do wonder how much of my opinion is formed by having listened to the audio book versus reading it. Yeah. Be my brain wanted, as Tomahome recommends, imagining him as Robert Pattinson? Yeah. And I haven't seen the movie yet. I want to see the movie when I'm done. I do. I'm a little scared though Yeah I don't know if it's going gonna be too scary for me N a talk, but I'm worried that the mov might They might play up the jump scare part of it a little bit. And so um I The character's voice didn't really do it for me And so I wonder if I would have liked him more if I just had if he just read it with my eyeballs creating Rubber pat Oers. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's me. Repication from Ian Bertram. over on Discord. The method of replicating Mickey is analogous to the transrporter in Star Trek, think transransporter buffers, which has all sorts of implications. It's supposed to be an exact copy from when the first scan takes place, which means Mickey eight body that is a decade younger than when he started the journey, which is going to be weird as his girlfriend gets older. Good point. Something I hadn't thought about U What happens to the memories of trauma when the body has no scars That would have to be disconcerting Can you imagine hitting the gym for six months and then being stuck back in your flabby body, which hasn't worked out? You're not work. Yeah,'s a. got yeah, weird. Not sure how the tech actually works. I know it's hand wavy, but my brain won't leave it be. Does it need all the proteins and other material used to build the body or does it create it from atoms I think the I think the former Yeah. I how they described it in the short bit that they described Right I mean, how could you feed it exactly the right proportion of proteins each time If it builds from atoms, why not take a scan of a cow Sand's personality and just print loads of cows and have a barbecue Probably the same tech as a Star Tk replicator. That is a really good point That is a really good point Instead of shipping colonists should ship the scans of the colonists and a nanotech self assembly plan to minimize weight. And now we've said, why didn't the owls just drop the ring into Mordor instead of coming Also touche, but those are great, those are great thoughts and very good. I like. I mean, that is the kind of thing that you've been corrected by Chris K. It's Eagles. Oh so eagles. What did I say What did I say? He said you said wls. Oh, I must have been thinking Harry Potter. But I agreed with you. That's okay. Eagles. than you, Chris This is your your Weasley moment Yeah. I'm weaseling out of it Anyway, um, This is the kind of thing that yes, in a perfect world, he might have given you a line that says the reason they didn't do the scans is because blah blah Honestly, I can just fill that in myself.
