I'm still getting used to that intro Yeah, just because we took out the part about interviewing people. Although I'm trying to interview Wesley Chu. I sent him an email. he emailed back. We just need to nail down a win Oh, nice. Yeah. Should we do it during a regular Wednesday? I gave him the option. I was like, if you want to do it on inter over the internet U we record on Wednesdays, you can just hop on the internet. But if he's because he offered to come over to my house. And I was like, but if you want to do it in person, then we can kind of schedule it whenever. Mhm. Nice I mean, I still have to be available, right For both of them, yes, but doing it over the internet thing is easy ' you're already on So if you wanted to do it in person, then it would be bringing you in to big feel figure out I mean, he would be in person with me, not you. You're right. Yeah, I know, I know. I know that's. But it sounded like that was easier to do than do it over the internet. I guess well, I guess he could do it in person I don't know, I think in my mind I was thinking like, well, nobody want to come over in the evening But you're right, you could totally come over during our regular recording time too Whatever. we'll figure it out. Yeah, yeah, exactly. We'll figure it out. Oh good. What are you nbing, Tom Well, I haven't nbed it yet But as soon as we're done recording, Eileen made hamburg steaks or he's making it actually right now Cool, cool. You know the Japanese where they take the ground beef And they they make it like a to will stick out of it No Yeah I could tell you d' own. Yes, kind of. I mean Maybe No. I think I think so It put cur sounds. It sounds like you just make a hamburger and eat it without a bun, but it's like way better than that because they do I believe you. Yeah, you do it like a curry sauce over the top and you can put cheese in it ands it's all kinds of good stuff On the other end of the spectrum, I made vegan enchiladas for dinner. O So peppers I'm not vegan No peppers. How are those chiladas? No squash J cheese? What kind of Oh, not no. You're thinking of poblanos. Fake cheese Enchiladas? no, enchiladas always have cheese in. Need peppers? Yeah, but you don't need No, you don't need peppers, but Some of my favorite enchiladas have like green like. This is about chilies. This is about me, notot about you, Tom. I just can enl lot of. I asked a question of whether there were peppers in it and then you asked me why. So I was answering your question. I don't know what you're talking about. They were fine. I'm not vegan. I miss cheese Yeah. in that recipe. The cheese was fine What was it that besides cheese? anything, just cheese and Sweet potato. Oh beans. Nice. and Greets No No. No What is this first? Yeah Yeahah, they were good. they're pretty good Julian, I'm soo parenting this week, so Oh really. Yeah So it was a It was an afternoon. littleittle guy was pretty. tired and didn't love waiting around for me to make his food Eileen knows what Yeah You get all angry be hgry. Well because I was like, because she was really excited to make the hamburg steaks. And so I was like, when do you think they'll be done? She's like,h I don't know I'm like, well, I'm doing sort and laser from seven to eight. She's like o Ohh yeah, they won' be done before then So I'm like, oh, I better eat something Snacky before I go. alv Kalvy and Chad says I'm confused Veronica can' eat peppers or cheese. No, she can eat both. She just did love. I love both of those things. I love both of those things. I thought Tom, I think I'm having like a misunderstanding problem tonight by your words because like I thought you meant like Enchiladas have to have peppers in them? No, no. becausecause you said they were vegan, I was guessing like, ooh, did you have peppers in them? because they're vegan. Yeah Yeah, I had a rough daying anyyway. that's okay. I'm sorry Shall we jump into the quick burn? Let's do I wears a funny accent sometimes when I feel awkward. Dare you love I do. We don't even know which part of what country we're accenting. Speaking of Ian Bertram, he's probably gonna be annoyed by this accent. Oh, it's turning Australian. There it is Mike Ten years ago, the planet of the Siders was set loose. Good read No, I had no idea Yeah, New York Times article about it that we'll link to in the show notes as well Uh Mark points out that the science fiction Writers Association, is that right? SFW announced that They announced that the recipient of the twenty twenty five Infinity Award is Frank Herbert, author of Dune. The Infinity Award posthumously honors acclaimed creators who passed away before they could be considered for a Daemon Knight Memorial Grand Master awward. I believe Octavia But The Infinity Award will be presented at this year's Nebula Awards conference in Kansas City, Missouri, but it will not be presented to Frank Herberg. because it is a posthumous aw. less a zombie frank her were to arrive U What about maybe one of his sons? what of his kids could pick it up? Sure, sure, but that would not be Frank Herber No, unless he has become a sandwork. Yes Because they're imortal, right? Yeah And we would have it would have been faking his death in that case. which which kids, that's an interesting can you still get the Infinity Ward if it turns out you faked your death to become a sandworm I'm gonna guess no. Yeah. I think they'd be like this is a posthumous award. You could just get the regular Daamon Knight Memorial Grandmaster Award at this point. Fair enough. Paul says Loccus's annual fundraiser is up and the coolest looking thing for sale this year is a special Luxe edition of the Green Bone Sga by Fonda Lee, signigned and personalized with printed edges in a gorgeous binding for five hundred USD I know Tom's a big fan of the series, I'm on book two now and it's pretty awesome, so just throwing it out there There's also a signed Sando book. that's Brandon Sanderson, I'm assuming. Clarark, do you think Yes I think This the answer the I think part. notot the I know part I'll have to double check on that one. I don't want to Build an association where there is none is now is decided Weird that he never thought the check Um Moving on, John says in Kind of sad lame news Audible unveils plans to use AI voices to narrate audioobooks After all the recent praise for Jeff Hay's narration of the DCC audiobook, this is a sobering reality check from Jean. B I think so So here's that is a direct like we are taking jobs from people in the. the facts Here's the facts of the case. Okay, tellell me the facts. They have already rolled this out for independent authors. It's been out for a while. Mhm. This is making it available to publishers shouldould they want to use it Uh the publishers don't have to use it. and in most cases don't appear to be using it except for translation where they would not be able to afford to translate it otherwise Wow. Veronica's just reacting with a big ol yawn It is the right. Whatever This is not a video podcast, Tom. You don't have to tell them. No, that's why I had le becausecause they couldn't see it feeleeling EBi sleey, okay? No, it's sleey. Yeah U So I realize there's a big AI backlash these days, but this isn't as bad as it sounds. If you still think it's bad That's fine. I'm not trying to convince you otherwise, but this isn't Audible is now replacing all narrators with AI. This is Audible is making this feature available to publishers and it's now kind of up to publishers and Audible being a publisher, Audible itself, how often and when they are going to use it And then in my product brain, I'm thinking, this is an MVP. They're testing the waters. They're seeing like how well this technology works. They're figuring out the use cases, They're figuring out the scalability and the cost and all these other things And eventually it will start rolling out as like, test and then it will just become more and more prevalent. And then when the technology gets better, which it is getting better, every minute of every day it will eventually become the norm. Maybe Mbe maybe not Maybe the fact that you have so much AI backlash means a lot of people won't want to get the book if they know that it's AI narrated. They'll want to have the reader. And especially, this is why I'm glad John brought up Jeff Hayes If you have Jeff Hayes narrating it It's going to be a long time. before a generated model can imitate Jeff Hayes. You're not saying it's impossible He's so good U especially with the and then go on to sound boooth in the cast reading that he's only one of the voices on. I think I think those two things will keep this from just like putting all the narrators out of work Is it going to be controversial? Yes. Is it going to be difficult? Yes, Is what Veronica described as the plan? Probably. So I'm not disputing any of that. But I think it's easy to catastrophize. And so I'm not trying to say don't worry. I'm trying to say, don't panic. Does that make sense? And yes, I agree I know you didn't say this either. I just want to be really clear that I don't think I am catastropizing. I think I'm No, and I wasn't saying you were, I'm sorry I know I just want to be pretty You know, I just I think that that's a pretty easy to get to probability of what could happen in the future. I really don't. I really don't think this is going to be as widely used as people think most part because people are so against it. Public pressure is every. I don't know if they'll know. I just don't know if they'll know Like I really don't Like at some point my narrator who used to do the books goes on Blue Sky and says, ye, I got fired. I'm not doing this anymore. They'll know Well, maybe I'm sure they won't I don't think they're going to replace narrators. I think they're going to bs that haven't been read yet or maybe it's kind of like a long tail effect where they're picking books that aren't very popular and then it just keeps getting better and better and then a new book decides to do it and they don't really publicize it or I mean, how many books now have been written by AI that are just out there and people don't realize that the authors you starting AI? Well, yeah, u you start reading. But what I'm saying is I still think it' going be it's going to get better as time goes on. Like we on a hockey stick of capability at this point. No, that's fair. But I do think there'll be a lot of pressure to be like, well, I want to know who the reader is and I still think we'll know We're really, really good. Our human brains are really, really good at figuring out quickly what the tells are of what's made by us and what's not. Every time there's a new technology, it's always like, oh, how am I even going to tell that that's fake? And then pretty soon it's like, tell that's Photoshop, right? So I feel like those two things together. the fact that people don't want it very much and the fact that people are really, really good at figuring out when it It's there and not probably going to combine to make this not happen as often as we're afraid it will And there's the positive side, which is a bunch of audio books that could not make affordably can now be made. Yeah, and that's what that's what some folks are like Tomahome said that in chat as well. Yeah, that that's a likely scenario Anyway, thanks for listening to this episode of Buuss Out Loud. Uh I think we'll just have to dis agree to I think there's a reasonash point. I think it's a reason this digence. disagreement might even be too strong of a word, but like yeah, I think we've both got valid perspectives on this. so. I unfortunately feel as though we are going to get to a post uncanny valley situation before we're comfortable with it And when I was talking about catastrophizing, I was referring mostly to some comments I've seen online, not to our conversation here where people are like, well, that's it. No more audio works. And it's like, I don't I don't think it's going happen that fast. If even if product is right. Don't go on social media anymore. Yeah, yeah only watch Instagram reels about cats. There you go. My dog starred in his dog Walkers reel. They just started an Instagram account and he was Seven was all over their reels today. I was like, Wh, go S Nice. Oodteega was featured on Dogs of Clim on Local climbing shops, Instagram. That's cool. Yeah. Go with Yeah All right. Oh yeah, we've got this one last one. Is this fine or yours? I lost track I don't don' know. Okay, I'll read it. Hill on the Hill and Jason Read seeven says looks like Amazon has canceled the wheel of time Is this sad news? I only watched an episode or two and was not one over The curse of long series is that we never reach the end when televised. We talked about this on Cord Killers today too, and I came up with the phrase that Wheel of Time was a well beloved and well made sci fi fantasy show on Amazon that unfortunately didn't get enough viewers And so they decided to stop doing it. That's the word on the street is that it was just too expensive to make for the number of people viewing it. Whereas Lord of the Rings is not as as well made or well reviewed, but gets lots of viewers. So even though it's even more expensive, they'll probably keep making that Does it get lots of urus? It does.. Lord of the R is popular Millions of viewers. Yeah. Oh wow. Which is interesting because I leave it watching Oh I stopped watching that. I stopped watching both Me too. Yeah. I watched season one of both of those and then never carried on. so I'm the problem te. Yeah. Yeah. I really did not like season two of Lord of the Rings, I have to say. I haven't even started season two of Lord of the Rings. Yeah, I don't know. Anyway, I feel like this is gonna be an episode of me just shitting on things. I'm sorry. I mean that kind ofould I apologize? That kind of day. I get it I always feel bad because I want to be honest about how I feel about things, but I never want to hurt the feelings of the people who work so hard to make them. Not that they ever listen, probably, but you know, like I just I feel bad putting that kind of negativity out there in the world, especially having been the recipient of that kind of negativity throughout my career fail. So I have a hard time being honest about things that I really didn't But if you don't like it, you don't like it. You don't have to be mean about it. You're not being mean about it. It's just it's fair for you to say you didn't like something. Specifically I didn't like u, Suron, I don't want to do spoilers. I don't want seeee I can't do spoilers either. I didn't like his character. I didn't like his hair. He didn't like his hair with his hair I agree with you with that What was their styling? but why were they doing that? Just everything about him was like comically trying to be evil I like My much like his eyeballs L his eyeballs Um Yeah Anyway, sorry Let's jump into Bury your swword, which is our feedback from the audience Happa happappiness writes, Hey y'all, Matt Dinnaman event was great some takeaways Riding awful things was easy because being an a hole is the path of least resistance. Jeff Hayes made and lost a bet resulting in a donoughnut tattoo on his butt The tattoo session was recorded and posted online. mister Dinnaman thinks the video resulted in the first Dungeon crawler Carl audiobook being on the New York Times bestseller list for the first time He has never watched Gilmore Girls or gossip Girl. His daughters are his subject matter experts He denied having a foot fetish. LOL One of his joys with this series is when people tell them Dungeon crawler Carl has reignited their love of reading or got them to read for the first time since high school. When I met him, he commented on my sword and laser hat and told me he recently learned about our book club He stayed past ten PM, meeting with everyone and personalizing books with a name, overall, a really fun event I love that he recognized that h. That's great. Nice job. Yeah. Thank you for the update. doesn't live as close to me as Wesley Chu, Tamahome. so I'm not sure if I can get Matt Diniman over to my house, but maybe we could still interview Um Oh, that makes me happy. I mean, he must have heard about it because of us doing the book pick and maybe it came up somewhere. And I interviewed one of the product guys from Soundboth Theater about the tech they use for publishing in DTNS. Oh, you did. Oh cool So we've got it in there that we should contact and be like Yeah Do we have to add the interview line back into the intro if we do that two interviews? I you know, we can just surprise people with interviews. I think that It's like making I just only m proises that I can't keep on the anymore us interview exactly Tom Hom navigated their bonuses exactly There you go U I love this. Thankk you.s that's really exciting. and I know so the event was fun So very cool All right, Jan says for the new Dungeon Crawler Carl segment of the podcast, apparently. I did not know that the hardcovers for the series had a bonus chapter at the end I don't know if I'd buy these just for the chapters, but it might be interesting for some. Sorry, if this has already been mentioned on previous episodes, but May these be the kind of incentives or something. that we'll be seeing more of in the future. You know, that's really. Are they the epilogues from the audioobooks? I was going to say if you don't read the audiobooks, you might not know there's epilogues in the audiob books And I wonder if they're the same or if they're different. or do you get a different epilogue in the audio book than you get on the hardcover? That'd be interesting to find out Yeah, I just got the um the epilogue about the the change of ownership for the hat Oh, uhuh the beanie Yeah, and what that entails Tghta. Yeah. and cata yeah. I' I am well, I I had to slow down and read Lives of To, which I'm almost done with, but the I' met at the eye of the Bedlam bride. Okay. Yeah, I'm gonna to stop after I have ten more minutes of this audio book, which is all just donut being in the sound booth And then I'm going to listen to Lives of Tao, but we'll move on with that. Al be yeah I did not know that the Chapters were not in the paperbacks, I guess Yeah Soft cover version. interestnteresting I think I might to the Sound Booth Theatater multiast productuctions once I catch up. crawler Carl, I might just take another the lap Nice. Okaykay Did you cry when Doughuts sang All eyes on me Are you even a good person if you didn't cry when she bang all eyes on me Cry? Yes It actually made when when I heard the name the song was All eyes on me, I thought of the B Burnham song. Oh yeah.. lies on me All lies on me I thought of Jesus' song. So yeah, we all have our own eyes on me Yeah, I guess so U And then finally, Trike says, re the ship of Theseus Comedian juggler Michael Davis had a great joke on this topic. He said one of his axes used to be owned by George Washington I've replaced the head and the handle, but it occupies the same space The Acts of Theseus or in this case, George Washington Yeah Cver I used to be Tom Merrittt but I replaced them. long time ago. That's not the same, is it? New and improved. Tom Marrick. Actually, I'm probably not mostostly not the same cells as when we met. Yeah, it's been a minute. Yeah It's been a yeah U Okay, should we jump into the kickoff and the wrap up? Let's do it The Lives of Dow by Wesley Chu is our bookpick for next month. U The explanation of why we picked it is in the book briefing at patreon. com Wesley which I read Be the show. Right before the show. U I wanted to make sure I didn't get anything inaccurate But I'm pretty sure I made most of it up Um Wesley Chu may not have been born on a space station near Jupiter in the eighteen fifties part may have be wrong, but he didid grow up in Taiwan. And then moved to Nebraska in nineteen eighty two when he was six years old moved to Chicago in nineteen ninety and the book takes place a lot, a lot of the book takes place in Chicago. and you can tell that it's written by a Chicago one. What you may not realize if you read the book briefing that is true is that he did beccome a stuntman That was not No That was not made up Um He became a stubman and appeared in commercials with Michael Jordan eet? Yeah. In twenty eleven, he began publishing his first novel, The Lives of Dow, accepted by anngry Robot. And liives of Do was published in twenty thirteen. It is the first of four books in the Dao series and it tells the story of an IT tech named Rowan. who is inhabited by a passenger in his brain called Dao from an ancient alien race U More than that would get spoilery. That's bookjacket copy, but there's a war between two ancient aliens taking place on Earth that none of us realized that shape world events And It goes from there. I'm Bob's your uncle. Really enjoy it. Dow's your unc How's your uncle That's your profus. Um I really enjoy this story. I've been blazing through it. it's good Nice. Well I'll be doing the the audio book So I'm looking forward to that onnce I finish up this last ten minutes of DCC. Yeah. I've been wanting to jump into these books for a while, so I'm looking I'm excited Well, let's get all Theseus and talk about Mickey seeven. Wrap it up. This is going to be spoilery though So if you don't' super spoilering. wantan to be spoiled on Mickey seven or you're about to finish up and you don't want to listen until we're totally until you're totally finished, then you might want to press pause. There's your warning. Thank you. All right Let's start things off with Paul who says, an SF adventure about being hungry. I am three quarters of the way through this book and I gotta say, I was thoroughly enjoying this book at first, but it has really tapered off. I feel like this could have been better as a short story or novella because a lot of Mickey's tangents and backstories are just sort of filler And the majority of the main story lately has been trying not to get caught As a duplicate being uncomfortably hungry and trying not to do anything stupid, but being too hungry to do a decent job of not being stupid My wife and I usually talk about our books to each other as we read. But lately my updates have been he's still hungry I had no idea when I read the synopsis that the main source of tension would be whether or not he'd have enough calories to feel okay after dinner timee There was some talk in the last podcast about not liking the characters. And while I don't have a problem with their personalities, they all just feel sort of flat Like how does Nasha feel about Mickey staying mostly the same age while she's aged nine years? I feel like there's a lot of missed opportunity exploring the relationships people have with someone who only some people see as a real person I was very intrigued by the underground network of tunnels by the Creepers. I was kind of hoping for more of that When instead of just Mickey hiding and wanting to eat Anyways, I have sixty pages left. Let's see where this all leads. Did didid you feel the same thing that all the tension came from whether he was going to get enough calories or not No, I don't think so. Yeah. I don't agree with that. I do agree that I could see it being a lot tighter Light. a lot tighter. I I definitely thought the tension came from Is he going to get caught and Uh How are you going to navigate a world when there are two of you So not even just, I mean, yes, how are you going to navigate and not get caught, but also even with the people when the people start to find out How do you balance that? And, you know, you have a girlfriend in this case, right? and she was dating you. then you are she's used to you becoming a new person, you know, we get that whole backstory. So yeah, I don't agree about the tension. I also think this is very much you if you're like me and that you like to fill in gaps, it gives you lots of fun places to fill in gaps philosophically But if you're not, if you're someone who's like, no, it's the storyteller's job, tell me the story. I don't want to work, then this does leave a lot of room where you're probably wondering like Okay, why?? So I totally get where' Paul is coming from there, but I liked it because I found it very thought provoking. You know, I felt like it was very much a meditation on the meaning of existence and identity Yeah Seri says that story was complete enough that I didn't want to continue with the next book. I feel also like could have been tied up in one book I feel like it didn't need to have more books. book. has more books only because of the movie When the movie Oh yeah When the movie deal was signed They asked him if he could write another book in that universe. and he's like, great, yeah sure And it's not really a direct sequel It is it is in this universe It's kind kind of another self contained story, although it is sequential I see This was meant to be a standaloop Got it. okay, then that because it felt done. Like it did feel like like And then when I found out there was another book, it made me question the ending. and I was like, was there more that I missed Um I don't know I like what Jason Reid said in Chat, which is Mke Mickey E's death was abrupt. He spends the entire book sleeping and complaining about being hungry and then he just dies. I was gonna say, I do question the choice to never do it much with Mickey E But I also kind of found it amusing that Mickey Eight was like, Well, crap, I can get away without doing anything. Soy master. The authorial part of me was like, this character isn't doing anything, but that I was sort of entertained by the idea of like but maybe I would do the same thing if it was him. if I could get away with I really it did make me think a lot about how I would interact with my own self. Yeah And like what would frustrate me about myself and probably a lot. I think that's the case annoying to myself is that We're Often people are annoyed by the traits in others that are like themselves because it's something you don't like about yourself. and so No one's going have that more than you Very true Sorry gosh I sleep It's okay. I Seth's comment. It's the time, not the company Seth says, I don't tend to notice more common words being used too often For example, I was oblivious to the fisting in fourthing, but the word Her severating was used three times in the novel and stood out each time The first was neat. The second, I shook my head And the third made me want to post this to see if it annoyed anyone else. You can use lots of big words if that's your thing as an author, but if you write a book with only one big word in it, you shouldn't use it more than once. at least that's the way I see it Um I uh I wondered if that word had been made up a wor as a word for the universe. and I looked it up and I was like, no, it's it preree existed Mickey seeven. okay. I didn't notice that I definitely had the same It didn't annoy me But I definitely had the same reaction of the first time it just kind of passed by. The second time I'm like, oh, he used that word twice. the third time I was like, is that even a word or is this like some, you know, like space word that he decided to throw in there. So it did stick out to me that it was used three times. That So interesting. Yeah, I didn't notice There There's a bunch of versions of this in the thread here as well and this is a word answer. There's always What's that word in Tomah homeomey mentions, Samuel Delaney likes I can never say that word in cohit in cohit ando it That's one of those words that I've never been yes, thank you, Tom Hom posted in chat I don't know what that word means either It's like the one, I feel like it's Let's look it up Just be and not fully formed or developed. Rudimentary. Rudimentary Cfused or incoherent Incoherent and incohite are Aals Got it All right, I want to read this one. The line between adaptation and in name only, spoilers abound. So this is about the You're going to read all of it Oh my gosh, it's way longer than I realized. Okay. I'll read the first paragraph for. Okay, All right Eric says, I finished the book already, so I watched the movie. It drove me to write the following B adaptations exist on a spectrum On the most faithful end, the canonical example is the comic to movie adaptation of Watchmen. Closer to the in name opening end, many Philip K. Dick short stories that get turned into movies As I mentioned in my review that I knew there would be challenges in this adaptation I'm also more chill about changes that come with adaptations than I once was. But I have to say that Mickey seventeen definitely is a lot further from the point of the book than I thought it would be. Reminded me of those nineties or early two thousands adaptation of Starship Troopers It also seemed to take the plot from dark humor to absurdist, reminded me of a Terry Gilliam film Yeah Go ahead. That can go both ways So I you mentioned Philip Dick as a sort of you know, closer to the in name only end Blade Runner is that? Blade Runner has like a half dozen references that are taken from Do Android's Dream of Electric sheep but is an entirely different story, with an entirely different moral, and an entirely different message. Um I guess maybe not entirely, but a very different direction than to Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. So I kind of I haven't seen Mickey seventeen yet, but I've heard the same thing from other people that it's the same general outline, the same concept, but not the same story I tried to watch the movie last weekend and I leared it. Oh, really? whyy? I cannot remember the last time I turned off a movie So I was sitting there and I was watching it with my husband and I was like, oh, yeah, the book was pretty good. Let's see how the movie is. And we started watching it We both like quietly watched it for like, fififty minutes And then he turns to me and he says Are you liking this? And I said, No, are you liking this? And he was like, why did you keep watching it? And I was like, I thought maybe I didn't like it because it was so different from the book that I was annoyed by it. Sure. And I didn't know that someone if someone coming in fresh would have a different perspective and actually be enjoying it as's like a piece of content that they're just seeing and understanding for the first time and But man, I did not enjoy that. It was weird. I don't mind absurdist humor. I like absurdist stuff. I think you should leave is my favorite show. But this was like bizarre and I think a lot of it did come from Um having read the book and expecting certain things and being like, why is eighteen so bananas? Why is this Mickey so stupid? Like why do they all talk like that? Like I thought the audiobook was just a weird narrator and then to listen to the movie and be like, no, the audiobook is based on his stupid voice in the film. Like that's where he got it from. Who made that decision? Yeah It was unlistenable to me Um, what else Yeah, there was a lot about it that I did not enjoy. I did think the creepers are really cute Aw, really? That was about it. Yeah. Okaykay. Um I don't know if I'm going to watch the movie now I don't think you should. Everyone I've talked to either has a negative opinion or their positive opinion is like, well, the actor, Robert Patinson's great. Well, direction isn't great. The cinematograpy, no one says the story is great The writing was terrible. Like the the But it The writing was terrible There's so much wrong with it It was not violent. No, it was not violent and it was not scary. It was just like really bizarre. Rober Pansson was Too much. He was too much much in this movie, and I like him as an actor quite a bit And everyone just felt very bizarre. Yeah.one wrote the screenplay I don't know. Edward Ashton Oh. And Bong JZhg ho, the director. And Bong un, like the fact that this was a BangZhun. I've I've lik what? All four of Bong Jun ho's U like parasite and snow piercer I liked mother where a lot of people did not So you liked mother? I didn't watch mother. I didn't watch. Maybe I will like Mickey seventeen in a way that other people do not Maybe I'm thinking of a different film. Is that the one with Scarlet Johansson? They need different mother film Okay Yeah, you're thinking of a different film This is the one with Kim Higj Jay Laing Jay Lw, sorry. Okaykay.'s a. you're thinking the genereral for Lawce mother. for Laurece. sorry, Laurence.. This is not that one. This is a different one Yeah, I was like, I didn't think he. 'causeuse I remember was Jennif to Marry that director Um, Yeah, so was I was a I was pretty let down I came in with some expectations goodood actor Good, good director, greatreat director Okay, book to be all right These things happen aybe I'll watch it anyway Maybe I will like. Maybe you will. Maybe I'll like it and just then I'll you. And then I'll judge you How dare you like that? Um Yeah, but I I don't want to be harsh about Mickey Seven. It felt light. is what I will say There you know I stick by what I said earlier about there's a lot of room to enjoy the philosophical concepts of it. And I think those are real and they're If you're looking for them, it's very thought provoking It kind of like lightly skipped through the story in a way that weird when you have such heavy concepts hanging around. Oh, I've one other thing that I really didn't like aboutbout the book or the movie The movie. Okay It like took this really and this is Someone in the chat reminded me of it just now about that it like went super political Who just said that? Oh, the movie does? The movie becomes like is like a statement on Maga America Also which is like way over the top. And it's just like, It felt cringy like it was It felt almost like a u Um Hm That what's the Mike Judge movie Um Oh, idiocracy? Idiocracy. Like it felt borderline idiocracy esque in many parts as well You sure it wasn't? Uh Gg minini hym party that he was making fun of They had red hats. Yeah, the Gg minini him also wear reds Okay, well, what's his face, The actor that portrays the commander of the ship Mark Ruffalo, thank you Crochet Chris is like my second brain right now. Yeah. thank you, Crochet Chrissy. Mark Ruffalo was terrible also and he's great And he was like, oh, this really swarmy The chat is saying he was trying to be like Walter Goggins. I thought he was doing like a really bad Trump imitation. And I feel like maybe that was just my baggage. couldould have just been my baggage there But itel it felt like a really overt political statement too, where it just didn't fit in with at all the storyline of the book. They made up a whole new storyline. That could be a reason a lot of people are put off by it. if they like tried to make a point and that point really isn't part of the story because frankly, having read Mickey Sevven The point of Mickey seeven is that corporations are just kind of like, manh, they don't care about you. that not that there's no political aspect to it, right Yeah I mean, there's a little bit of like the cult or the u the clerics, you know right. There's the religious thing. Yeah. There's a little bit of religious aspect to it but this was different against the What what is he called multiples Multiples. Yeah. Well and just against the idea of having expendables. againgst the idea of expendables at all. Even the Even the cause of everyone's dislike of the multiples in the book is so much better than the reason they don't like them. Oh, really? In the movie. Yeah Like it's so much more like interesting and over the. Yeah ye. So like in the book, there is like this gazillionaire kind of like genius, evil psychopathic genius who goes to this planet and makes all his multiples and takes over the rich colonists and becomes like an entire planet of him, right? Yeah. In the film, U It's one kind of like one guy who worked at the lab that invented them and he made three of himself and became like a serial killer. Oh So it was like they like way toned down actually And it was like not as interesting. Yeah I would have lik to have seen maybe it was too expensive to was it was the as budget.ike it's easier to just do three. Let's do that Nice. Okay, well,s that's all I got. I feel sad. it was an interesting book, but The movie was not for me. All right, fair. I liked the book I'm enjoying lives of Dalmore And let's only say that because I'm currently blazing through liivves of Doubt where Mickey Seven It was the book that I would At the time I had set aside to read the book, I would read the book, but I wasn't really seeking it out and picking it. Good to know. All right. Well, thank you everyone for listening and for giving your feedback and for being my second brain as always. I always appreciate that. my old brain works slow sometimes these days. Blame the paramenopause that's probably on my horizon. You know what I say? My old gray cells just ain't what they used to be. There you go. I need a refresh. I need to do a cellular refresh out to my brain back
