I'm Veronic Velmont. and I'm Tom Merrittt. The Sword and Lazer is a book club, but it is oh so much more. We bring you news from the world of science fiction and fantasy, and of course, awesome discussions from fans just like you. Yeah, in many ways like you. But we're not talking about clones Sorry, I just realized I forgot to enter in what am I nombing? So I was doing that in the back. What are you nombing? 'cause I want you to talk about that because it sounds good. I got to have a pizza party at work today. At pizza party at work, are we seventeen again? What's going on? And we had ice cream afterwards. Oh my gosh. Do you work at a roller skating rink No. But it was it was very exciting. I drove all the way to Vancouver to have pizzaice really My team. Be you can't get it anywhere else. can't have that here. but it's fun. It's fun to have it. What kind of pizza was it? Uh it was, um U it was this pizza chain out of Burnaby think they have a it's something in me Something in me, you guys look it up Burnnaby pizza, something It's not something. It's not the word something. I'm just using that as a placeholder. They look it up. It's actually called something in me. Okay. But we we were doing a special thing for for our. I me what flavor of the pizza? Oh I had a it was margarita and then there was like a veggie And of course someone had to get the Canadian, I mean, the Hawaiian pizza Oh, Yeah Yeah, that's very popular here. I don' mind the Hawaiian pizza. I never seek it out. If it's there, I'll eat it. but I feel like this is not the first time we've talked about this. But it was good. It was fun ice Purita pizza is so messy, you know, with the lime and the salt And all the salt, very salty sometimes. they overdo the salt on the in the tequila Yeah Yeah But it is fun in the middle of the day at work Uh well, I haven't eaten my dinner yet, but Eileen went to the eighty five degrees bakery. Are you familiar Mm. B believe it's a Taiwanese chain and she got an orange muffin So it was a delicious U muffin. Now I say muffin because it was kind of muffin shaped, but the consistency was much lighter than a muffin. It wasn't dense And it had cream inside And an orange slice on top. M is delicious. Was it more like a cruffin Gess, yeah But it wasn't that flaky either M. It actually was like a medal and But it was like four times the size of a Madeeline. so Nice Yeah Chris says wasas it like a cream puff? Kind of like a cream puff. More like a cream puff, I guess, than other things It didnn't have a lot of cream in it. It was just a little layer, thin layer of the orange cream. it was delicious. And you guys have the best food in LA ad I'm not gonna lie. You're really lucky. LA. food is really good. I always thought San Francisco had great food and I've been to Vancouver and Vancouver has great food, but LA kind of has everything. No, I think LA has the best food. San Francisco at one point, I think had really good food and I think now LA has much better food It's just the variety here too, you know. Yeah. Although eighty five degrees is a chain. they haven them in San Francisco, they have them in Austin, they haven't in Chicago. Oh cool. I've never heard of them. That's not a that's not an LA thing itself. I'll have to you have to take me next time I come visit. They probably have them in Vancouver too, but yes, absolutely. We'll take you the next time you I will look, look on the internet and find out Shall we jump into the quick burns? With both feet For both quick burns. And one for each foot. One foot a quick burn. the AI will be very happy when we smooush these Trike pointed out that Frankenstein Nflix November. This is Guillermo del Toros, Frankenstein. And Trke wrote Guermo Dl Toro is going for it. lookooks gorgeous and scary Yeah, I think it might be too scary for me. Did you watch the trailer I have not watched it. I saw like one ad for it. I don't know if it was the whole trailer. I think it looked a little bit too spoopy You couldn't tell if it's the kind of spooky that you don't like though But that's a good point. It might be a good point. It's certainly not like snakes on a plane Well Do you think snakes on a plane was too scary for me? You were worried about it being too scary for you? I was. like literally anxious ever Weeks. Yeah it was get too scary for me. Frankenstein seems like it'll just be dark and spooky, but I don't know if it'll be violent and scary, but it is Guillermo del Toro, so yeah, all bets are off. It creepy, I'm sure. It does creepy and cool looking. Oscar Isaacs is playing the good Dctor Frankenstein. I don't know who's play the monster, but It looks great very similar to what the truck looked like. The low rider truck that Mark just put. Yeah. ye Very similar. Oh, okay Except for notest basisly really. Sorry for the backstory, there was a weird sound in the pre show Nobody knew what it was. and then a tiny little low rider pickup truck Zoomed past my window And it was very confusing because I've never seen that vehicle before. That's so wild. It's not a typical vehicle of the squamish area I will tell you so yeah, I was I was impressed and that kind of is what it looked like. Anyho, Yeah, I don't know if I'll watch Frankenstein, but I will keep my eyes open and I'm looking forward to hearing the reviews Hey, so did you watch Murder Bot the show? Yes, I'm take us on a slightly. didid we talk about this yet? H. I don't remember. I've talked about it so many places. I've talked about it on DTNS, I've talked about it on cord killers. We might have talked about it here and I just don't remember. I swear we've talked about it a little bit here, but yes, I'm up to date. I'm not up to date. I've watched all four episodes. I'm not up to date. I'm only two episodes in. so I have I have to How do you feel two episodes in? Good I was worried at first that maybe they were playing it up a little too cheesy And I It made me self conscious of the other people watching the show who hadn't read the books. Like they were thinking that it was judging it or like thinking it was too cheesy. Yeah, ye yeah Sanctuary Moon was a high point for sure. For sure. Ething that was amazing. so good. I liked Alexander Sararscard more as Murderbot than I thought I would. I thought that his crew were perfect David down Dalmatian Dalmashian Domestan Domestican D David Dalmatian He I love him in everything So It sounds like you're exactly where I was after two episodes, which is like this is a little goofier than I expected But they nailed the casting pretty much and I like Alexander Skarsgard. Do you want to know where I went after episodes three and four Mhm Episode three, I was like A I see what they were doing now it's feeling like murderbot. and episode four is like definitely feels like murderbot. So my theory now is that It's really that longer to do the early part of the novella. then then it would feel like When you read it And so it just felt a little stretched, but they were taking time to make sure you got to know everybody Okay, that's fair. Yeah, I'm looking forward to the next two. I'm with you, crochet, Chrissy. Episode four is my favorite so far. Oh nice. All right ye. Licker says a filmmaker James Cameron, yes, that James Cameron, director of Aliens, Terminator, and a couple of small indie films like Titanic and Avatar is teaming up with author Joe Abercrombie to work on his latest book, The Devils. It's a case of Blue Man Group meeting Gim Dark fantasy. Can't wait. What? Poor Milluan Grove Getting lumped in with Avatar with the Navi. Oh, that's the joke. I think that's the joke. If I'm getting the joke right, that's the joke. Yeah Um But yeah, James Cameron doing the deevils. Wow. Okay. Also James Cameron being a huge Joe Abercrombie fan, right is also kind of cool He's like, Yeahah, I've read the firstirst Law books, especially Best Serve coold. Okay. Okay Why didn't do firstirst law then? Wh must be just something about the devils Iven't read the devil. Maybe So maybe that's I haven't either. I haven't either but I am very curious to catch up on that if I have time, but the King of the deevils will be a part of them. but had I see you deevil Well, congratulations, Joe Abercombie. That's amazing.. Congratulations to James Cameron for hopefully getting to work on that book. I'll be back deevils. July book pick. Have we read Joe Abercrombie as A bookbook before. I Yes we have. We read first I don't know I don't always just have this page open when we do the episode with all our books. R. That would make our life a lot easier. I am looking now Blade itself. Blade itself was an alternate pick However, That alongside World War Z. So we've never actually done it as way then Joe Abercrom Fair game. is fair game. That's a fair game right. I would be super into that Wait is that my pick? So not next month but the month after Next month is my pick. pick but you were supposed to pick a fantasy Whait is devil's fantasy are we sure Oh, good question. Wh did everyone fall on it? It sounds like sounds like it should Okay M Mark says fantasy sounds like the consensus is coming in. We don't have a dungeon crawler Carl situation here where it's Oh my God. I got one of my really good friends to start reading Dungeon Crawler Carl and she loves it already Yeah I've got many listeners to chord killers to read Dungeent Crawler Carl, and then they're all like tearing through all the books. One person was I read them all and I have to wait uill November for the next one. What the hell? L like, yeah, welcome to our lives. Yeahs are our lives. I'm in the situation now where people are telling other people that I recommend good books around town. Oh. So now I have this list of people I don't know very well that I'm supposed to be sending book recommendations to Mm a lot of pressure You're the town book recommendnder L'm like the town book crier. The town book crier hear ye, hear ye. hereere's the Dungeon Crawler Carl. Vonica recommends dungeon Crawler Carl Here's the Jacket copy for the Devils by Joe Abercrombie. Plague and famine stalk the land, mononsters lurk in every shadow, and greedy princes care nothing but their own ambitions. Only one thing is certain The elves will come again and they will eat Everyone O So yeah, definitely sci fi. I'm into evil elves. Evil elves Yeah. Elves could be like the novi There you go. There you just use the same body forms. Yeah. ye. That's why he wants to do the devils. He's just gonna use his three Money saving Yeah There you go U Well good. No, this is good. actuallyctually, I am a fan of James Cameron, which I hesitate to say sometimes because people will judge you. And why I enjoy the avatar movies. don't I don't consider them to be You know, on the same level as Citizen Kane or whatever, but they're great. I enjoy them. I I guess a good rewatching budget movie. said the last one was very long. But it was enjoyable. I still enjoy. I haven't seen Any of them Avatar the way of the people who weren't in the last movie that one. That's what it's called A of people get that wrong. I just wanted to make sure I got it right I just got a totally non secor crochet Chrissy comment that just says bisexual elves. I don't understand. Apparently it's based on Sere saying everyveryone is delicious, according to Elf. He it is Pride mononth I see. I see. Yeah. yeah, right. Good way to celebrate All right, well that's it for quQick burns, but we did just do an episode last week, so I'm not surprised. This is a bit of a bit of a short content wise episode, but we'll fill it up. don't worry about us. We'll find a way. Oh we already have We already have. and now it is time for Barrier Sword, which is our feedback from the audience. U Ruth says, I have to say for me, Mickey Seven didn't feel like a one off book that then had a sequel tacked onto it. For me, the ending felt like a suitable pause rather than a full conclusion, and the sequel felt like a conclusion to a duology That's nice Yeah I, you know, I don't think I We were talking about the fact that the second book you know, came because of the movie, apparently. Yeah Well, I'm going to say I just don't think I care enough to have that strong of an opinion anymore just okay Maybe you'd call it mid key seven W you are just in rare tom formed. What happens when I don't eat dinner before the show A little little punchy, a little punchy. needs us needs us Hey cals Is that what it is? When you No, that's like, how hot the sun is, right? What is a c cow? Well, kill a cow. you could say kill a cow. Yeah. That's from food, right? That' the energy you burn when you eat food. The US the sun. No, but that That is the same. They may be the same, actually. But yes, that is appropriate for food I' it's I thought you were radio station. Welcome again K. I feel like my brain is boiling inside my body right now because you're That's what I feel like I cannot. It is too hot in my office right now. So if I sound a little delirious, that is why Um Tke says I sampled some of the AI narration, and currently, it's bad But next year, it will be on par with humans. A recent estimate said AI will replace ten million jobs in the next three to five years. That's a lot and soon AI could definitely do eighty percent of my job at the TV station. Robots would be needed for the other twenty percent If the system powered up and down by itself and we switched from wireless mics to wired ones, AI could do ninety five percent of my job The recent Chinese robots I saw on YouTube last week are dangerously close to being able to do everything a person can fortunately, we're still years away from them being smart enough to do anything other than pre programm tasks. But it's scary slash interesting how far they've come in just the last five years. Now in the same thread and I think worth mentioning is John Taly saying, I am not worried about AI. John says my first job in the entertainment industry was doing accounts payable for a major indie. I quickly segued into distribution finance. In that time frrame, an analysis was a data dump out of the mainfame by the IT director, which we then added up by hand Any other kind of analysis was a report followed by a tick and tie. It took the whole department working in parallel to do any kind of major analysis. Now, everything is either available immediately from the ERP or on a short refresh into analysis database software. A single analyst can do what a whole department was needed for thirty five years ago Finance departments have not gone down. Rather, they do more analyses and at a deeper level. I expect the same with AI. The work won't go away, it'll just change Yeah. I think that's That's what a lot of people say, and I think that is true I think there will be jobs that disappear completely, most likely for people But there will also be jobs that just change or go more deep like like John Toloney' saying. I'm And some things won't change at all. but I think that's just the nature of progress and technology, you know, happens every generation, and it's a big one this time, I would say for sure, probably on par, in my opinion with the industrial Revolution I think I don't think anyone knows what's going to happen. That's the first thing is like, if you're sure it's going to be horrible, good news, no one knows. If you're sure it's all going to be great, bad news, No one knows What happens historically is Over a longer term We come up with new things to do. There's not a certain number of jobs and if one gets eliminated, that's it. there's no more replacements. What happens is we find that, oh, if we don't have to spend time doing that we can spend time doing this other thing which we never had time to do or was never worth enough to do before because it took too much time and now it doesn't take time Over the short term is where it gets to be a problem. In the short term, it can be very disruptive, in which case you might have people throwing their wooden shoes into the machines to stop them because they're mad Or it could be like almost seamless where whole departments are eliminated, but those people are just reassigned to do other things and they stick around and everybody has jobs. Both have happened And anyone who tells you they know what's going to happen with this one is lying because nobody knows, could be one of the others But I do want to recognize that like the industry or the technology industry, also, many industries are it's hard to find work right now. So I think people on an individual level, like it's gonna it's going suck, you know? I think that's if you are impacted directly, like All of this like it's going to take time to level itself out doesn't really mean much, you know But sure, it it's hard to find a right now because of a lot of things. Oh, I'm not saying it's because of AI Yeahar I'll clear that up. Yeah it's a tough And if we do end up having the more disruptive version of this for a while, they will exactly what you're saying. But I think a lot of companies are saying like, oh, we don't need these things because we're working on AI solutions for X. Yeah. you know, so they may not be hiring as much in those particular those areas. And then The smart companies will take that savings and spend it on hiring people in other areas that give themoney And then hopefully in two years, I'll be like, oh, that didn't work out because we need people again Well, no, no, I'm saying the smart companies won't get rid of people. The smart companies will take the money they save by getting rid of people and invest it in other people doing other things that give them the advantage over. the stupid companies that are getting rid of people and getting. That's always what happens. That definitely happens. just a matter of how fast. Anywho, and then you have the next one. Tessie Dave o, I thought I just readohn Tulon', but that'sine. Tessie Dave says I'll start off by saying I'm against AI narration as a replacement for humans. It's going to happen, but I'm not happy about it. I will always buy the human version versus the AI if given a choice. But Will the AI be bad It is now But it's only going to get better, and I would assume the best companies will still have a human sound editor tweaking the audio to remove any uncanny Valley oddities and smooth out the quality. I expect it will be indistinguishable from humans within a few years AI does have its use. for books that will never sell enough to warrant the cost of a human narrator Also for better on the fly narration for the blind community Yeah, yeah, that last part is awesome Man, the video stuff right now is really freaking me out. It is scary. I know this is a slightly different topic of conversation, but like the VO three stuff. Wh, is too good.. Did you watch u Mountain headad n Netflix, you should watch it. I think you'd find it interesting, but it touches on this quite a bit Um Ver dystopian. Yeah, I've had enough dystopian I'll be hest. Let's read some Joap for Kraee. I was really into dystopian You know, when everybody else was into other things and now it seems like everybody just does dystopiaian all the time. Yeah, I'll still read Joeberromie though you're right. , he's not dystopian. It's different different vibe but definitely not a Not happy go lucky. That's for sure Oh Um, Yeah, AI stuff is weird. Yeah It's we are living in the future every day Very fascinating. Yeah. and it's not the kind of disruption is new Every time disruption happens you don't know where it ends up. So it's easy to say like, well, we went through this before with this and that. and look, it turned out fine When those were new Everyone was really nervous and unsettled by those too. So like it helps a little bit to look at history, but There's always something unsettling about like, yeah, but Who knows, Maybe this time is different, you know? Yeah Yeah. All right, let's talk about the book or just like talk a little bit about what we've been reading so far with the Book of the Month We have selected and have started reading The Lives of To by Wesley Chu. And Wesley's gonna join us on july second. So that's really cool..s he doesn't live far from me. and he's going to come over and be in person here. Of course, Veronica will still be in Vancouver, but we'll be able to chat with her and talk about the episode. So if you have questions about Les of To that you'd like us to put to Wesley, you know send those to us. feeedback at sort andlazer dot com or Tag us in the Dcord or on G good reads or something. We'll collect as many of those as we can. And I've been putting together some notes myself that I want to ask them about. I did finish the book. didid you finish it No, I think I'm about halfway through. I will definitely be finished in time I don't know if it's because I wanted to get back to Dungeon Crawler Carl so fast If that was a subconscious motivation, but I was finding excuses to read this. So even if that was a subconscious motivation, I wasn't upset that I was reading Les of Tao. It was really good. It was really fun. It is good. It's really interesting. att least It's interesting. I'm just gonna repeat everything you say.om Tom is the best. Mark asks will Veronica and Wesley bury the hatchet I don't remember what I was mad at him about. I think it had to do with the Dodgers Mm Yeah. I can see that 's the only I don't really remember When When were you having a hatchet with Wesley Do you even remember when I don't even think he knows I'm mad. No, what was I mad at him about? I was mad He does now He was he was pooping on something I liked. Literally like no No, he was he was Barbie movie, Jason, thank you. You didn't like the Barbie movie. Okay. I love you guys. You guys are so good. smart Second brain man, second brain So the first time I got mad at him was because the Dodgers. This most recent time I got mad at him was because of the Barbie movie. He said something like it was Like it was over hyped I didn't something and I was like Well, maybe it's not for you. I don't know. I said something really like defensive. Maybe it's not for you Oh I wouldn't say that. That's terrible. But yeah Cushi Christy was also mad about Barbie, so There you go. I mean, I think it's because well, we can talk about it on the show. Maybe we'll have a Barbie segment and I'll bring all these bad feelings back into into current time which is always healthy to do. Yeah. But I am a cancer do. You know, I hold a grudge and it affects me deeply and personally. So I think that'sll what we'll accomplish in that episode at least. Yeah, and maybe we'll have time to talk about his book too. Maybe Maybe, we'll see But yeah, I'm looking forward to that. That'll be fun. I think the book is Good. I think it's really good. I'm having similar issues where I I have to remind myself that Ran is not me And he as a character does not need to behave the way that I would behave in. Certain circumstances. And sometimes when a character in a book, in a way that is completely set of how I would react to a situation, I get a annoyed, which is a weird controlling behavior to have as a reader, I think. But It's also a sign of a good character if it's making you annoyed, right? You're believing the character enough to want to criticize it. That's a very generous way of thinking about it. I appreciate that And I'm like So I'm having that vibe too. and I've had that vibe in other books recently, so I'm trying to get, you, just let the story happen, but things are moving in a direction now that I'm very much enjoying. so I'm sticking with it Maybe you maybe you just need to feel superior to Rome. You know, like you could take that tactic of like, well, I obviously would never do that. That dg But I do like it quite a bit I really like the world too. L Chicago It's not a real place, right? Thats He just made that up. There's no such thing as Chicago. Like deeep dish pizza. what' that all That's crazy. That actually exist. You know it wouldd be cool if somebody actually made deep dish pizza in real life the most realistic thing about the whole book is that the cubs lost That is very true Yeah. M I went and went to Geno's East, which is an actual Chicago deep dish pizza place that has a location in LA because of this book. I'm like, I have to go to Go'. I have to go to Genino's now No, but I mean, like the way he has The and I don't want to be spoilery here, but the way he has the aliens, the passengers relate with their hosts. is so much more interesting than I expected or other people usually do Um more will be spoilery and we'll wait for checkens later on to talk about it. But I want to ask him about that of like how how did he construct that? you know, what was he thinking about? because I think this is not spoilery to say, but you would expect them to have more control I think. than they do. Yes. And when they do exert control, it's in an interesting manner It's in a very Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah So Anyone, everyveryone go eat deep dish pizzs I named the episode while you were chatting. Deep d episod sci fi. Deep dishes sci fi It's quite literative, but I like the cadence of the words Yeah. ye. Also it's gonna be a good image I can hard to tell Oh yeah. Oh yeah Oh yeah, it's gonna be good.. Pat. you're a genius. Late stage entry. Fantastic. Welcome to the chat, Pat. Yeah. where you've been all our lives Well how do we how do we work this into the title now? Is it deepci or're just Hi Is the title? Send by Y Do we do Si Pi as the title, but we do a picture of Dep dish in the in the album ar Noight, we can we can workshop y after the. Checkure that out.'
