And we eat. We eat and we talk And not at the same time And no thanks. I know I was trying to turn it into into that, but it didn't work out. What did you what did you get down with today? food wise? Right after the dog threw up and before I did the show. Sorry, that's unappetising, I know. But we did garlic, shrimp and tortllini. Really good Really, really That's an interesting combo. I would think garlic shrimp more with like a spaghetti or buucini or angel hair. Sure. yeah. Trllini is is a new combo. It's just like a cheese tortellini, you know, with a marinara sauce and then the garlic shrimp tossed in there Tasty. Well, I had a very seasonal beverage the other day that I wanted to share. It was a watermelon cooler. of sorts, it was like a Almost like a watermelon milkshake. I don't know how to describe it. Like wow. It was like a cup like two cups of watermelon. and a half of yogurt, like plain Greek yogurt, unfavored Greek yogurt honey salt, lime juice, and ice All blended together and salt. Did I say salt? cooler, that's a smoothie. That's. It was basically And then I put like fresh mint for my garden on top. Oh yeah and put it served it on the rocks. No alcohol, just totally. Just. And oh my Godd, it was so good. That sounded amazing. It was like Citrusy and kind of salty and frothy and like really nice Very good summer drink It's like The makings of a watermelon margarita kinda too, with the lime. But when I tell you, I pee it like four times over night I could not stop being like I almost never wake up to use the restroom the washroom night. And I was just like, I was like, oh no, what did I do I'm so hydrated right now Your body's like, I don't much a hydra. I got nowhere to put all this water. Exactly, exxactly But I highly recommend I'll try to find the Instagram post with the with the recipe in the in the show notes. All right, well, I guess that's all we have for for what are we nawing this week? I don't have any other pre show stuff, so let's jump into the Gquish burns wasird sorry. Yeah. it was as if we you were we have forgot Something but we didn't. There was nothing. We didn't No. Yeah. There's nothing there. Yeah It was weird. Jason Reeds and Jeff both pointed out that the twenty twenty five Nebula Award winners have been announced. The winner for Best novel was someone you can build a nest in by John Wizell in For Someone you can build a nest in in literally in. Okay The Dragon Fly gambit by AD Sui wins bestest Novella, neegative scholarships in the fifth state of being by AW Prihondita, scored novelette. and the short story award went to Wh don't we justust kill the kid in the Omola's hole by Isabel J Kim Why don't we? Why? I' write a short story and find out. Maybe they do Well, congrats to all the nominees and the winner Seth and Tomahome said Goodreads shares their most read books of twenty twenty five so far broken down by category. They say I was really surprised that the fantasy and sci fi sections didn't really contain new books People are reading big authors in fantasy and romanticy And, you know, not really necessarily moving on to the brand new things out there in the world So I was like, huh, that is interesting. And then I went to look and I'm like These are all new authors because they're old. Well, this is tough because it is it goes okay, so there we go. We're getting by categories now. Yeah You go to fantasy a little bit. Matt Hig, Madeeline Miller JJ Klon V Schwab. You know, I'm like they're not reading old authors like T.S. Elliot TSLA to, but it really Cersei Yeah. Madeline Miller. I'm like Cerse's new. Oh, no, it's like ten years old Yeah, yeah, we definitely why do I still have this on as currently reading? Yeah, I think I think you finish that one a minute ago. Science fiction has has a little more of the classics in it like animal farm. George Orwell is on there. nineteen eighty four, George Orwell on there Handmaid's Tale, but that's probably because of the TV shows wrapping up So that's going to bring more people parable of the sewer Octavia E. Butler, so There's Fahrenheit four and fif one. I wonder though If the sci fi peopleople fulfilling like school reading lists. over the summer. I feel weird in my body that I've read every single romantasy book on this list Yeah, Those aren't old romantasy books either They're just all of the popular ones say whyy would people today be reading Orwell I mean, sure There are lots of intelligent reasons why you might want to read Or well. Also, it's on every summer reading list assignment list. We were reading nineteen eighty four an animal Fm when I was in high school in the eighties too. Although in you know then it was actually nineteen eighty four There was that. Um, But yeah, it is interesting that the fantasy is more current The science fiction has a little more older stuff But it's probably just because People don't read new books usually ike your average person when they just go to read a book, they don't go for the newest thing from the breadth of everything that's out there It's only voracious readers like us, Sord and laser shields. that are like, well, we've read all those. let's pick something new I'm also kind of embarrassed to say I've read all but two of the young adult novels. Oh ye No, That is nothing to be embarrassed about none neither romanticy nor young adult are anything be embarrassed about. I suppose so. Yeah Tke speaking of the classics, Tryke pointed out that the TV series on Apple TV plus based on Foundation by Isaac Asimov is coming back for its third season, july eleventh and wrote The mule has entered the chat dun dun IY K H DYK? DYK? You've never read that far into Foundation? No. Yeah. Okay. No. But that also is not really a spoiler if you don't know what it is. Yeah. I love the series, the show, so I will probably continue watching that I have not gotten to see any more murder bot. I've still only seen the first two episodes. Oh no You must catch up They get better. Subscribe Why? want me?' You know Handbs chit, I'm just kidding. would pay for another thing Do you Do you need a gift certificate? Just Okay I put it on the sword and laser card? Yeah, you got a birthday coming up Actually actually you legitimately could put it on the Sord and laser card And that feels weird. And we would expense it as a because you need to watch it to talk about it on the show It is legitimate content As long as murderbots on Let's true or foundation Or foundation. Yep All right, I'll talk to him about it. Yeah, yeah Why do you you put it on the company card? All you gota do talk to him about that I know, but is it like it's like tied, I don't know how to pay for it outside of our Apple account You know, like I have to like figure out how to make that work. Sure. Can I have him write expenses Yeah that's complicated. Itis receipts. You don't have Do you have a family account? Yeah. So you could associate the Sord and laser card to your think and then pay for it But you think if you had to figure that. We know technology, we'll figure it out one way or the other Sometimes I'm sure six people would have emailed us exactly what to do by the time you figurered out. Telling us how to add a new credit card to our family Apple account.. Moving on, the finalists for the twenty twenty five Ignite Awards have been announced. The public can vote for their choices until august fifteenth The Igite Awards began in twenty twenty alongside the inaugural ViaCon, a virtual convention centering the contributions and experiences of BIPOC, with Black indigenous and people of color, in speculative fiction I don't know who wrote this. You're going to have to go back and get the name for this one. So apologies for not crediting the author of this quuick Burn But they go on to say, in my youth, I could keep up with almost everything published in the SFF field. I haven't heard of the vast majority of these underscoring how big and inclusive the genres have become Nice. All right let's see, do I Am I just an old person who doesn't know All the cool Well the point the point of Facon and the Ignite Awards is to expose you to authors that you will not get exposed to otherwise. So true far from feeling bad if you don't know these, you should be excited. likeike oh, cool. stuged. Yeah. I'm being I'm being o, a strike Thank Strike. I don't know. Oh, you know what it was? It was two strikes posts in a row and I think It just got left off because of that. I can't whereere do you find where the finalists I can't see them A finalist you twenty twenty four. Falists About the awards, categories. Yeah. If you go to finalists I think the names on this list, if you don't click on the result buttons are the finalists for this year. They don't really say that on this page Um So we've got a Oh ye book from folks like Neila Hopkinson August Clarkke Justinian Huang Gatambata and Foto sasame, Tamase. I'm so sorry I didn't get a chance to practice that in advance Um Some us maybe. And there's a lot of great authors on here. Yun Ha L is here U I'm trying to I'm doing the thing where I'm just looking for authors I know. that's exactly opposite of the point. But there's a lot of great options to choose from. if you want to pick up something Charlie Jane Anders is up for the Ember Award for Unsung contributions to the genre along with Indra Prumet Dust, Nisi Sheel, Renee, and Sana Sleimman takeake anything away from from Charlie Jane But she's very sung Well, then she may not win the award ofther. She's pretty. I feel like she's pretty. It depends on where you look, right? Yeah. I suppose In certain orarterers, she's she's well sunng. like her because I think she's got an amazing podcast. It's awward winning. She's written a lot of award winning books Yeah I know I know what you're saying. like ye. maybe just in our bubble like more familiar with her work. so. Scott pointed out that storyteller, a Tanneth Lee triribute anthology, is scheduled release for release on july first with a list of contributors that includes Mike Allen, CSE Cooney, Maya Dine Andy Duncan, Roso Rinon, Fernandez Oh Roso Rinkon Fernandez. Theodoregas, C L. Hllison, Getty Hessa. Eia Daon Johnson, Starlene Justice, Amelia Mongan, Michael Yua Montrey, Mariska Picetnei Sichal KT. Wagner and Martha Wells, forward by John Cane and afterward by Anne Vandermer. Very cool. Yeah, lot of new names to me in that contributors list as well. so that's great Scott M. says the twenty twenty five Ursa K Leaguin Prize for fiction shortlist has been announced It's that time of year. There are definitely several on the list with descriptions that intrigue me, though the city in Glass was the only one I had previously heard about Yeah. and they do this like the Booker Priice where, you know, they they do a shortlist And so getting on the shortlist is a is an honor, even if you don't actually receive prize Uh So yeah, Black Heart Man by Nala Hopkinson Fall by Vadra Chandra Sakera, Archangels of Funk by Andrea Herston The Archangels, I should say. The sapling cage by Margaret Killjoy. Remember you will Die by Eden Robins, The West passassage by Jared and a pop upp covered at Jared Pachask The Sitting Glass by Niveao and North Continent Ribbbon by Ursula Witcher. Very cool There's a pretty good list of folks on the selection panel as well All right, and finally, Tom, take it away. Aout Zero O pointed out that Seven Seas Entertainment has announced that their English translation of the first record of Lodos war novel, The Gry Witch will be getting an audiobook release. The series of novels which began as a series of basic dungeons and Dragons replays, kind of like episodes of Critical Role, but written out were later adapted into anime, manga, a separate tabletop rolepling game and video games. The illustrations of the replays and novels ended up shaping depictions of Western style fantasy worlds in Japan, particularly depictions of elves. Fascinating Yeah, not familiar with all of that and audiob books too. so that's cool Thank you, countount zero or as always And thanked to everyone who submitted for Let's jump into Barrier Sorage, which is our feedback from the audience Toma Home says Joe Abercrombie adapting Bruce Sterling in Tamson Mir, and John Skalzy wrote some of the teleplays in loveove and Death and Robots, loveove Death and Robots season four That's what Tamoahome right? I don't I don't remember the Cteext Some home give us whyy did you put it if you don't have the context? I to know. I think it was one of those things where I saw the context. I'm like, good point. And then I just copied that part And then For dinner But yeah, they they all wrote Tleplace. So there you go. some always like I forget. I don't know what the context was either. Francis X said just to let you know that the Amazon Prime Vide animated series called Murder Drones And there is a reboot of the librarian called Chapter two airing on TNT cable Also the context. Also the first one's not a sentence J just to let you know that the Amazon Prime Vide Animated series justust to let you know I think something got lost in the cut and paste, possibly But there's a reboot of libarians called Chapter two airing on TND. That's useful and appreciated. Thank you, Francis. Well now I know that there's an Amazon Prime video animated series called Murder Drve. That too. I didn't know that before. Yeah that did come through. so thank you for that as well Ruth says I'm slightly amused that shortly after I resolved be more positive in my comments on the monthly book pix. We get a pick that I really enjoyed, but that Tom and Veronica both thought was pretty mid. Oh well on a totally different topic. Tom will probably be pleased to hear that I've recently been getting into K pop And I too thought of the Jisu song I heard. Sorry when I heard all eyes on me I think we need a thread, Ruth That's what I think. Jus is a member of Black P You know Black pank I do, I do Yeah in the I know broadest sense. Yeah. Yes, Yes.. Also in that same thread, Tamahome posted about eights at Barnes and Noble, which is another Korean group I'm like, are you an A tiny Telah And then he sayays Saning it in the chat as well. Barnes and Noble had an AT's weekend event. Betes wasn't there though Tronic could or get too excited I'm trying to remember the u Bo Burnham song It's the one all ees on me songs like getet your F and hands up Get on out of your seat. All lies on me, all lies on me. Do you remember that one Get your F and hands up Aain out of your seat, alles on me, Alles on me I'd try to sing you the G Su song, but I have been fun It's almost over. It's just begone. The end That's the whole song No, that's the part I cannd me saying without It's a lot of dancing. You don't wantan to see me try that. It's the bees to flower. I know flower about I could say flower for you No, I think we're good. I should probably stop. Both my mother and my child and my husband D don't let me sing in the house anymore. So Really? even the sun. Oh. Oh yeah. he says, You're hurting my ears. I thought he used to like your singing No, notot anymore. No You're hurting my ears. Well ye, well, your voice is your whole life is hurting Burning everything fen like a mother. I love you, I love you, but man, hurtful, hurtful. The John Taly posted that at about the five minute thirty second mark of the previous episode, Tom says Dark and spooky, which was my daughter's favorite phrase for any room less than fully lit when she was about eight It's dark and spooky. She would then turn and run off That's so cute. I like that. Dark and spooky. Yeah U Well, thank you everyone for the discussion topics, even if they were slightly uh non contextual I think that made it even more fun Even better, even better so we are Are we supposed to interview Wesley? We are next time extra time. Yeah. He's going he's going to come for the for the official for that upp. Yeah. G we're only anyway through the month so ear. Yeah, you' all got to start adding some questions and comments. There's been like very little discussion about this book for some reason. I don't know this is a summer thing. I've got some questions for Wesley Okay we could use more. so Yeah Maybe we need an interview we probably should I you do. Actually it would have been too too early to do it prior to this episode. So yeah, let's do that. That's a good idea. Okay. o But I did make some discussion topics for us to take shoots off. I forgot to put in the link. which I always do in our showown. for the book? Yeah It's okay. And that would have so cleared up the Wesley plans to join us for the july second episode. I see. Yes. I see. Okay, that makes sense Um, I have finished, I assume you have as well. I have Okay. I enjoy it. I also enjoyed it. We will do our best to not spoil anything. This is a mid mononth checkup Sory I' yawning! orry, it's not time. It's the company, huh, Veronica. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh U No, I'm just sleepy I am just EB sleey. So I enjoyed the book. I don't want to get into spoilers obviously. I did, I think, as I mentioned on the previous episode, have some frustrations about We can talk about the broad strokes, right? So like Okay. So if you're like super strict on spoilers where you're like, I don't want even a question that might imply that anything is true at all, then sure, maybe you don't want to hear this, but we're not going to spoil plot points. We're not going tell you what happened in the book, but we can I think touch on broad themes that are you could guess from the book jacket. I think that's very. Yes So Ron has again Jicks in him Who is Tao and now has had many lives. He's got a he's got a not so dark passenger I guess it depends. that's a extxtra reference Um I guess it depends on how you how you see the genjicks. I guess the pro fis. Maybe you're pro fist Maybe you're profus, mayaybe you're Yeah, can I can't think of a good comparison forenchick, sorry. But some of the things I was thinking about during the story are like how would you feel if you had a dow? Like what would I do? Like I already kind of talk to myself, but wouldn't it be kind of cool to have somebody with all that experience But it would also be pretty invasive I think most of my answers to that would have to be spoilery just o yeah, broad strokes. Uh I really likek the way he handled it And I think that would make it easier to do You know what I'm saying? Like it's not It's It can be written in a lot of different ways and has been written in a lot of different ways, you know, and some are more invasive than others Do you have any casting ideas you would want to see us these characters Patrick was. Oh my Godd. All right, so this is coming up. I don't don't I feel bad outing you, Tom Is this okay? I should for. I want a chance to defend myself in the Court of Public opinion Okay This is completely not at all related to the Book of the Month. as many ofthough I think Patrick Gorbton would make a good runan A good roan or Tao Thou and Ron are the same But no but but no. I guess you want a voice actor. Okay, yeah. no, I was thinking Ronan. And Rhon's younger He's pretty you're right. I think of him as being in his like late twenties. No, Patrick Wburton in his late twenties would have been good. Maybe not now Even so, he doesn't fit the body type described in the book at all. What do you Do you even know who Patrick? No, Turns out he doesn't Turns out he doesn't. T doing He does No, you He's not That would be spoilery to describe him, but he's just out of shape Patrick Warburton? No, R That's why it wouldn't be good Well, it wouldn't be good for Patrick Warbward Z Hez to have to play that. No. And he's at his sixties I forgot how old he was. Okay. I was thinking of him as a young man I was thinking about it like like Vventure Bothers era play like you know that he was in Aventure Bros. I do know that he was Adventure Brothers. He was Hank I messing with me. Go ahead out me go ahead. Okay.. All right. so the other day, Tom and I are still listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl, and I think we're both on book six now. We'm I'm on book seven now. You're on seven? Yeah just starting. I just I'm midway through Bedlam Bride and Tom just is on the next one and in the beginning of the audioobook. now I'm worried I'm gonna to well whatever, it's spoilers, I guess for The very first chapter of Bedlam Bride, where they announced the special guestars And in the audio book, specifically, of course Uh, so who was the who it was Who was the other author who is guest starring in this bedlin bride. I I can't believe you can't remember. It was it T. Kingfisher? No. it was u TJ It wasn't TJ. Klon Is someone like that. Legends and Latte's author Oh, Travis Baldy All right, So Traffis Baldry apparently is going to be a guest star in this book And they say it also guest starring Patrick Werbert And so Tom had messaged me the other day being like, o, hey, it's so cool. Travis Baldry is a guest narrator And I was like, Ohh, that is cool. And then I hear the announcement on the audio book and they're like, and also starring Patrick Warburton. By the way, Travis Balry is a guest narrator on an earlier book So when I told you Travis Baldry is a guest narrator, it was referring to that book, not Okay, you didn't clarify that in this conversation. That's the first time Well no I said Travis Baldry is a is a guest narrator before you either one of us had started Bedlam Bride. I'm pretty sure. Well, I didn't you were ahead of me. so I thought maybe you were on that one or Okay So anyhow I pink Tom, and I'm like, wayay to bury the lead about the guest narrator on Bedlam Bride Patrick Warburton And he was like What it o, okay, I got toa read the exact The exact thing that happened here If that's okay You just out of the blue at nine thirty in the morning. May I set the stage as I am preparing for the worldwide deevelopers conference coverage. So I'm scrambling to create a daily tech news show rundown in advance and figuring out where the stream is. and my mind is entirely on that. Caro Yes O of nowhere. I get this text. Nowhere. nine thirty two AM. Patrick Warton. Tom goes We'll treat it Iatberton I have no clue. I just started book six. Oh, that's a level with the hunters, right Never mind, Ha. Am I ahead of you? I'm on book seven, Bedlam Bride Did you listen to Bedlam Bride? Or is that six? I'm on Bedlam Bride No, I'm on book six now, Bedlam Ride. No I am So in the beginning, it says there are two special guest narrators. Oh, I forgot that How did you forget Patrick Warpurn Who's that? Are you kidding me right now I'm not mad, just disappointed. Sorry, it's like five minutes to WWDC. I'm a little scrambled Okay later Tick Among like everything else, Vventure Bothers. Of course, he's basically Carl Yeah, that's the voice And I know what part he did too and it's genius Yeah, they say it in the beginning. I totally missed that in the beginning And Patrick Warburton as I don't want to spoil it, but you can probably guess as a part. And then I say, not just that, he does another part too That's the end, and then I stopped responding Mhm. Did you get to the other part No I got to the first I got to the first Patrick Warburton part Yeah. One little clip and I went, Yes No And I forgot he had played Brock. And I really was like, why are you yelling Mad Warburton at me right now? I have no idea. have no idea what's going on. But you So you do I honestly not know who he is. I do know who he is. and I remember him as the tick when I visualize him and I had forgotten that he was Brock's voice until you reminded me. I'm like, of course. And that is definitely Carl's voice. all of that claim together. It was just I was you had a lot going on. I was not concentrating at all. He was also putty in efld And I don't I don't know that I he's one of those names that I'm like, oh yeah, the guy that played the tick. you know what I mean? Like I don't know that his name stuck in my head as well. So I apologize to Patrick and his family. He's got sons, I think he's got two or three sons And now they more vengeance against me. Well, at least one of his sons is also another Two of them, I think are also voice actors, which cool. Yeah. Yeah. ye. One of them sounds his oldest son is really hot and looks exactly or sounds exactly like him. Yeah If if I had seen that text message any other time the conversation would definitely have gone differently Id probably bring it in I don't know what's wrong with me. I probably should have just not responded until I should have just after WWDC. I don't know why I was like, No, I must respond now while I pos respond. The just kept texting though about it. so No you probably did the right thing. No, it's fine. It made for good content. It was pretty funny. D did It did make for good content. We should read your text more often Like I the penny drops the penny drops and I'm like, wait, that guy. Oh my go That's all right Um to the book that we're actually reading again, the strecasting. So Goddamn a donut. Damn it, dononut How plausible do you think is the u the cover up of this war happening behind the scenes., That's a good one Uh becausecause it is one of those things like They're so good at everything that they could cover everything up. But then they're not good at everything, obviously. And I feel like there's too many humans involved You know, like we already know there were like Mark, for example, kind of an irate human Like he went to the profus, but he could have just outed them all if he wanted to alsoso They have a vested interest in not outing each other So They're not going you don't have to worry about that, right And then it's just a matter of control of information You know, and they're experts at information ward information dissemination. So I think it's it's not likely I think it's possible pllausible I might even go so far as to say it's plausible Hmm Yeah, I don't, I don't if I'm if I'm going take my brain out of like science fiction world for a little bit I don't know. That seems really tricky. Humans are really bad at keeping secrets sometimes. Yeah the time You have to remember these are not just humans anymore Yeah True But they didn't have ultimate control over the human. Sure But when the human goes astray, they can make their life miserable and cover it up and stop it from happening again. And the humans are actually pretty motivated to cooperate, so probably doesn't happen that way I suppose so. I don't know We get we didn't talk about the cing. We don't want to be spoilery, but we get we get an example of of how they deal with that and how it plays out. We'd have to be spoilery to talk I suppose. Well, I' I'm not moving on. I don't know. I'm not good at casting I always have a hard time with this. So me too If you all in chat or on the podcast listening, Cws want to talk about Mbe I'd love to hear it we think would be good casting Yeah for this Usually there's like internet stuff that I can look at and be like, oh, yeah, this person or that person But I couldn't find anything online Re really good casting choices I Thou Mike cast Bng Hun who plays the front man in squid game. from the first season Well he's the front man in the first season, you never see his face, but he's also in the second season And you get to see who is. I've never seen the second season. Okaykay Was it good? It's good. Yeah. I like Yeah. Yeah, third season coming up. It's actually probably better to watch the second and third together anyway. Um, What ancient mentor would you like to have in your head? somebody Aristotle wouldn't be bad Aristotles interesteresting to know what Aristotle, like, yeah, like if Aristotle was aix. Yeah, like what would he With a more modern sent having modern sentiments Yeah having lived? Like what would his what would his vibe be like now? Yeah totally Sunu is not a bad one. I have a lot of, you know u actually Sunsu. Yeahah I want that that pirate queen The Chinese pirate queen. Oh yeah I'm forgetting her name right now, but she would probably be pretty I feel pretty unstoppable with her as as my my k sw Yeah or maybe Joan of Arc But she was we don't know for sure how like Gal you're not maybe sure. She might have true. She might have might have already been again J. exactly Oh yeah, RBG Hell yeah. Give me some ruth up in here. Ruth in my booth title of this episode Is it Chat RBG RVG. C would that be it? Okay Wh smile. Why don't you think this is funny? I think this is really funny. I'm still trying to think of other mentors Mark Camel voic voice acting Dao. That might pretty good M Tomahome prices. Yeah. Yeah. Tomahome was saying Chat Bi as being in his head. Yeah, your' too random. Okay. Okay Sorry U Sorry I said something with no contacts. How dare Veronica suddenly has no contactxts and everybody's mad at Veronica Uh, Yeah Okay, well, then no, I don't know have a good answer on the mentors' thing Yeah You did have a good answer. I mean, I guess but each one of them, I'm like, Yeahah, but Like I haven't hit on the one where I'm excited about it.
