Please D you did not see the image of the house on fire Hello and welcome to the Trawl where we take the week's political headlines, spin, rs, resignations and viral clips. We lay them all out on the table and then we marvel at the state of things. Gobbs open, eyes blinking, heads banging I'm Jemn Forte, and I'm Marina Perkis. And look, we're not saying the UK has gone to shit Having witnessed the racist poggroms that took place in Belfus last week, The only conclusion we can possibly draw is that The UK has gone to shit. And I know, by the way tulers, I know we're late to this. I know they happened on the ninth of June. So we're ridiculously late because I know we recorded last Tuesday. That was the day before it all kicked off. because Jemm and I went away, didn't we? We did. We took a little bit of time out. And I've got to say it was extraordinary. If you felt like we did seeing those scenes unfold. It was like the color had gone out of the country. It did seem gray and hue and very often and I can't lie to us, I'm sorry about this, but we ended up somewhere with sparkling sea and blue sky and warm sun and wonderful people and it seemed a million miles away and it was very, very good for us, I think catching. We did mutter to each other for sort of Maybe sort of forty minutes on racist Have you seen what's going going on? And then we put it away. Yeah, and then we put it we put it away bit. We did, which is great. It's like charging. It's like plugging yourself in the wall. It's amazing how good for the soul. just even a short break can be. Anyway, look, so much has happened and we are back raring to go. So we've had a social media band from the sixteen s introduced by Labor The world has its first trillionaire. The World Cup has started. if you're listening on Wednesday and your're English, you'll probably be around your tellies tonight F England game. The defeense seecretary and the arrmed Forces minister have resigned. Oh, Gwyneth Poutrro has really offended people even more than when she bought out a candle that smelled like her fanny. And Trump has turned the White House into a sort of tacky, homo erotic vile version of Chesington World of Adventures So you might not be surprised to hear You're getting three dralls this week. Yeah. Do you know? it could have been four drolls, I reckon. If we had time, it could have been four dwlls, but it's a good thing. We've stocked up on some rest We've absorbed a bit of sunshine so we can handle it all without going stark graving bloody mad, at least for a little bit. Although talking of going stark graving mad, I did share a room with Gemma on this holiday for nights, Three nights. All I'm going to say is let's talk about in the Gss because there's lots of funny things that happen When you share a room with Gemma Forte. Tal Thief. Marine T Tal Thief. We had a Dom and Doma moment. I'm going to let everybody know about that. right You're at the shower, okay? And I'm like, Marina, is there a towel in there? And she's got big nice, nice white fluffy towel wrapp around her doing her makeup before we go out. She's like, No, baby, there's only one. I's like, Oh I there no problem. I'm tabing myself with basically like a flannel. Yeah H Anyway, she gets up to me and she's like, Oh shit, sorry, I had two aroundound me. We did chuckle. It go. It was funny. It's nice been roomies It is. There was actually only one moment on the break where I did see Gemma's smile turn upside down and that is when she saw the BBC newews headline announcing that artist David Hockney had died aged eighty eight. Yeah. Nobody else seemed particularly affected, so maybe this is niche. I don't know. but I have been a fan of David Hockney since I was a kid He inspired my pretty shit art G CSE. I remember trying to design one of his swimming pool, iconic swimming pool paintings onto this piece of pottery I was making. But I don't know, talking of colour you know, that's what he represented to me. and I have been to more exhibitions of his than I could count on two hands over the years. And yes, as I've previously mentioned, We are going to talk about the disgusting bastards in Belfast and the ones encouraging all this sort of disgusting violence and mindless racism that we've witnessed that is literally casting dark shadows over our lives. And Hockney really did do the opposite. A Yorkshireman, of course. And recently, his exhibitions have been works that he's done on our iPad. you know and so into his eighties, innovating and creating He used to get mistaken a lot for another brilliant Yorkshirean, the playwright Alan Bennett and so many tributes poured in Yeah, as D Campbell said, exactly a year ago today we went to the David Hockney exhibition in Paris. breathtakingly brilliant. Tree of the day is any tree he painted because he did it so often and so well. What a talent. and how much joy will be given to so many for the rest of time RIP and thank you. Yeah. He had another big celeb friend, Paul McCartney wrote an absolutely beautiful tribute again, talking about how his paintings gave off a feeling, you know, of great joy. And there were lots of brilliant anecdotes as well. Chain smoker He was out and proud as well. Now, did you see the painting that he did of Harry Styilles a while back?? Be that got a lot of attention. And I love Harry Silles. and the painting was pretty bloody iconic. and Harry Styles is doing twelve dates at Wemby Stadium. I'm going next week.. And he paid a tribute to Hotney during his concert, which was pretty amazing. displayed a big on screens around the stadium. But Marina, we'll end this section here before we dive into everything else that's been going on and we'll end with a wonderful piece of advice that actually came from Hockney. The Archbishop of Banterbury posted this clip as did many people. So this happened during a live BBC news interview following his death. and somebody called Scarlet Clark was asked, what advice he had given her. So what advice did he give to you? Well, I mean, I mean the same thing really. I mean, he just said to enjoy and paint what you love and just Yeah, just fuck everyone. Oh, sorry. Apologies for that. I'm so sorry. Oh Scarlet Clark,, thank you for coming in. J again, apologies if you weren't offended by the language They're in part of that interview from Scarlet Clark That is genuine. That was BBC. BBC. Yeah, absolutely brilliant. Yeah, he just said, Yeahah, fuck everyone. Oh, couldn't agree more Marine purcus You've got social dialed in. Search is doing its thing. Acast Acast d. com slash advertise I get ready tralllers to drain all that lovely color away So we know we late to it, but we can't ignore what happened in Belfast or indeed Why So here's Cody Darl up with the overview. Now the race riots in question were caused by the murder of eighteen year old Henry Novak in Southampton in twenty twenty five by Stabby Psycho Viram Digwar, and the attempted murder of a man called Stephen Olevy in Belfast last Monday by Stabby Psycho Hadia Lodin. Now no points for guessing that the two Stabby Psychos in question are not white. Hence in Southampton, a far right group called the Southampton Patriots got the wrong address for Vikram Digwa's family home and instead terrorized a complete randomers semetached for two and a half hours. Lovely Red strip sir. I like my patriotism served with a blood alcohol level of how the fuck is he still standing up as well. And in Belfast, gangs of men in Balaclavas committed a poggrom by setting fire to the homes of immigrants and ethnic minorities. The clip's much longer, but he gives such brilliant overviews and he does go on to explain how these things don't happen sort of without being whipped up and without being encouraged. And actually, it's not happening in the sort of shadows on apps like Telegram anymore. It's happening in broad booddy daylight on X. Elon Musk's X platform is where people are encouraging the most barbaric behaviour and giving instruction to go and do these violent, mindless acts Yeah, Elon Musk himself tweeted, murderous migrants beheading innocent people in their hometown is what's making people angry, not social media. I mean, there have been countless reports whereby I mean the proof is right there that X is skewed to the right, that even if you join as a completely neutral person, the algorithm will push you to the right. You will see more and more right, right, wr, wr content I do as well. Think about your if you're still on there. I am and I mean it's a assess pit, but the for you column It's not for me it is so much right leading content. In fact, I've actually noticed it on Messa recently. I'm like, What's all this showing off my Instagram now as well? I feel like I'm being service content, which is not made for me. alwaysways skew to the right, never to the bloody left. Zach Belansky actually responded to Musk's tweet there and said This man is a threat to our democracy. He backs violence and extremism Blaming a group of people for the awful actions of an individual leads us to a very dark place. Musk, Low, Farraj Robinson. These men don't give a shit about this country. They want to rip us apart. Kevin Mcuire from the mirror said The family of the North Island stabbed man say many migrants make valuable contributions to the UK. They condemn disorder and don't want to divide people or fel violence. And again, hard and far right extremists like Musk, Gaxi Lenin f and low, they fan the flames. And we've been talking about how What happened was basically a pogrom. And I thought it was really important that we define that. So the dictionary definition of a pogrom is a violent, organized riot or mob attack aimed at macring or expelling a specific ethnic religious or national minority. and it frequently involves the destruction and looting of the groups, homes, businesses and places of worship. So that is spot on. That is exactly what was taking place. There was absolutely no way on this planet you could describe it as a ri or a protest, absolutely bloody not. which is why some of the coverage has been so frightening, frankly. So fucking alarming and ghoulish. We've seen commentators justifying this behaviour. We have seen and this was before again, before we pissed off on a jet plane. We have seen politicians. The one I'm thinking of is Chris Phil. I saw him being interviewed and then he sort of said, yeah, you're absolutely terrible. However However, no howvers, no butts. You can't do anything in your right mind apart from condemn what's happened. And we'll get into some of the worst takes just to sort of demonstrate this. but first let's hear from someone who's been really good on it, already clear, very responsible. and actually hearing her makes the clips that will follow all the more alarming. So politics Joe posted this, is SDLP leader Claire Hannah and she doesn't hold back Children in my constituency and others lifted out of their beds as their homes burned, masked men roamed the streets going door to door, menacing and setting fire to cars and buses and homes, terrorising people on the basis of the colour of their skin or the sound of their voice. People from Sudan People from India, people from Ukraine and people from Belfast and today businesses are shuttered, medical appointments are cancelled, schools are being closed for fear of getting young people home. So many people are frightened to walk the streets and frightened to be in their own homes tonight. And for all the online agitators who stoke this stuff up when they move on to their next target, we willll be the ones left to pick up the pieces. People are of course entitled to their views on immigration, and of course government policy is imperfect, but this hasn' not been a debate or a conversation. There haven't been proposals, there ha't been honesty about the trade offs Mob justice and some of the same old, same old proposals for a hardened border on the island of Ireland. Political leaders have a duty to lead, not to lean into people's worst fears and anxieties. That video of the awful crime in North Belfast was unusual in its brutality, but the cycle of deflection and disorder has not been unual We have seen this movie too many times before. In Belfast we know all about blaming an entire community for the actions of others. We knew all about scapegoating. we knew all about tit for tat violence and we knew all about street justice. Yeah Do you know what while she's speaking, I know you can't see at torders, but there's footage of the pilgrims and it's just worse. it gets worse, the more footage you see, the more stories you hear. Can you just imagine like the children? having to flee their homes. There was one family. they've already had to flee Ukraine. They were there from Ukraine, having to flee again I actually hold every single politician responsible. I don't care what party. for those people that have done exactly as she said and leaned into it. whereere they try and justify? whereere they try and say yes, but there are legitimate concerns. No No and no. Yes, sometimes there are, but never bring out that kind of justification against a backdrop of this This is how you make it worse. We have not been tough enough. and it actually frightens me that in those scenes Where is the police presence? I feel like those families behind those doors of those houses being just kn door by door by door, they're just on their own They'd just been kind of left the police were there. I think they were just very overwhelmed We're just looking out What does that mean? when is the next time? the mobilization of this, like we've talked about from these giants on social media The mobilization is getting more and more threatening. You told story, didnn't it that a Ugandan lady? Oh my gosh. yeah, this clip it absolutely broke my heart. So it was an ITV news clip. In fact, we'll play it You'll hear a Ugandan student nurse She had to flee her home during these disgusting riots and how can you not feel anything sympathy for her. I only go Th Some the house. And the only thing I did not get from the house what the letters my children wrote for me because that is all I have from my children. The letters that they wrote for me three years back when I was leaving them back home. I think that is the only thing I didn't get. I only got my passport, my laptop and my uniform because I have to go to work. Absolutely heartbreaking. Taj Aliro, I don't want to hear any bullshit about legitimate concerns and working class revolts. It's working class black and brown people being pushed out of their homes. This is racist violence and intimidation. Don't dress it up as anything else. I saw a thread actually yesterday And it was really interesting because the person said what's say the most I don't know, prominent white privilege And so many people said the same thing, It's being able to do something and not hold your whole race responsible Because if a white person murders, if a white person is a pedophile, if a white person is a thief it doesn't then become representative of the entire white population, but other ethnicities do not enjoy that same privilege. Certainly not in our country. Oh that cl that lady's absolutely dumped me in. I know. fact she still has to go to work. Yes, but she obviously doesn't want to be here. She's left her children, right for a better life. She also to send her money back home And that is how she's treated The people doing this, the people doing this to be rounded up Rounded up and just shucked in a bloody whatever prison. just get them gone. And I know we're going to talk about it in another episode, but the fact that that Cube faced and m which one Musk, he's got so much money. And like I'm going to do it in another episode, but the point is if I had loads of money like that and I saw that lady on the news probably go and just reunite her with their children and give a million quids and give her a fucking house. Yeah. because I couldn't bear it. Why don't nice people have a trillion pounds? Because there's no justice, Gemma. and there's no justice. another point to make regarding justice is It was actually Dan Hodges of the Mail on Sunday who wrote this Okay, this is significant. It appears the alleged Belfast attacker was actually fast tracked through the asylum process by Senna Bravman and Robert Generick. Yeah. He wrote, I've just found the following letter from Generick to the UK Statistical Authority on the seventeenth of april, twenty twenty three. It says We are taking urgent action to accelerate decision making and speed up processing times. Bloody blood, blah. Essentially, that man that Sudanese man who committed that monstrosity of a crime was fast tracked. It appears under. generate Bvan of reform. Inconvenient truth, that. Right. Are you ready everybody? I know we're thinking football mainly at the moment, but actually we are going to go now Two, the Olympics Make sure you bleep that one out. I't bleep that one out that was quite early. I actually saw that in the running or I was like she's not gonna stay The Sab Olympics she Oh, he just did. Yeah ye am. Reflective of the mood. And we're going straight in for gold. Yes. and a winner as far I'm concerned just straight out. although we've got two We've got joint joint gold medals setting. Caram Malone on a show We goo on on Jeremy Vine. this, I thought, was absolutely appalling. But you know this is the result. first and foremost, riots of this kind start off as peaceful protests and then the idiots and the thugs come in and then they do what happened what we saw last night politicians were calling for callarm isday because they knew what was going to happen. But let's just look at the basis of the rice It's anger. It's anger from people not just in Belfast, but from all over this country who are sick to death. Every day, every week, we say migrants who shouldn't be here. And I know you're going to say this guy should be here because he's got a de not. But every day in the courts we see them and they're up for some offense for violence or for sexual offensces, whatever. peoplee are sick of it, We're angry And when people get angry, that's what happens and this is going to keep happening. These riots will keep happening. as long as this system, as long as we have this immigration system where anyone who comes you could see Rey the fury is there. Now I don't even know where to begin with that. You're basically saying, Yeah, yeah. no, this is happening because everybody feels like there's no sort of like Wow, as you say, this was not protesting. it was like anybody of colour threatened. I mean it wasn't even that Gemous. sometometimes they were going to the houses of white people and starting to like bash their cars about And actually only when the person came out the house and hey, that's my car and they were white. they went, Ohh okay, sorry about that and moved on to the next. But also her points about immigration are just so off. There's no fact. Well, this is it she' saying in that clip. you know, people were sick of seeing them in the courts and this was them hanging talking about courts. Yeah What are you saying again Are you saying people of colour What are you saying? peoplee from what part of the world? or is it just anyone of colour And yet when it's a white person is totally okay is it? And this is the thing that's come out since then and people have gone to great lengths to show are there have been some absolutely awful crimes committed, attempted beheadings, you know, the pedophiles, this and the other by white British people And we just there's been no bloody uproar Yeah. I know. but also I really like Tattoo Dave sixteenzero eight on Instagram And Carol, this is what I want to do ay back to her Those who come here illegally are not entitled to benefits or housing Private landlords are pricing working class people out of renting. asylum seekers aren't allowed to work. Refugees, once they are legally allowed to stay, join a waiting list for housing. If they need it, they don't jump ahead of others. It's just so stupid These people are not the problem. And who are you talking about anyway? Yeah, is these sort of We're so sick of seeing this happening in the courts. Who's going to these courts? What you say you're so sick of criminals. you'reick sick of crime. We're also sick of crime. We're not all so stupid as to point the finger at one particular ethnic minority or one particular color of person. And we know full well you could eliminate all of the asylum seekers, all of the immigrants, whatever. You're still not going to be happy. Those thugs are still going to have their as to grind because they're completely bloody disenfranchised, lost, failed Whatever from a system that is not going to benefit them if these people were ever to or be deported got rid of. Yeah. when need to happen? L we're never, you know, how are we going to get there? They're so useful. they're such useful frigggin idiots. Makeerfield by election this week as well Yeah. It's all happening, Marina. It's all happening. We did we did a little chat on the day I said u Oh I said, o Burnhams Burnham's in the lead in the polls. Jim was like, donon't you talk to me about polls? Yeah I can't I can't I can't can't believe anything 't believe anything until it happens. Yeah she was saying, peopleeople won't say people might not want to admit that they're going to vote reform. I was like, it'd anonymous poll Do like lotots of skepticism coming out of Jem I've changed, Tllers. I have hardened. I am bitter. I've become sour Is it because of people like Beverly Turner that you've become sour? Yes, it might be. This clip was insane. It went massively viral. She is talking to Matthew Stadlin, who's a sort of centre left commentator who does his best on JubBie News. was Asthing There weren't riots. There weren't riots. There weren't people marauding through the streets with pitchfalls. There was a house set on fire, Beverly. There was a house set on fire. We've seen numerous pictures of fires ablaze in Belfast. This is disgraceful, violent behaviour that ist bodies piled up in hospitals. Someone' house being burnt down in a riot is not that dramatic. What are you saying, Bev going out of your mouth. No riot. There was no riot. There was no riot. There was not a house that has been burnt down. There are no riots. The police are't even. Did you did not see the image of the house on fire?en Belfast. Yes, but I've That's not that dramatic. It's pretty dramatic to me. Definition. When you use phrases like far right we're going round in circles Not what that is. You're not calling that a riot. What do you wantan to call it? Fres? What do you want to call it? No not calling it a riot. What do you want to call it then? I'm not calling it a riot. What why are you calling? People in hospital tonight because of what's gone on there There aren't people in hospital, and I think you are precisely the problem in that you are problem not people You are exerating. You are exaggerating the t called me When I'm calling out for violence My show, commentators come on the TV like you and say, This is outrageous. These were riots tonight riot tonight, Matthew. There's a few teenagers who have set alight vehicles and it has been a busy night for the police and I am not diminishing the reaction. W, I imagine those Tenagers came to Beverly Street And did that to her house? her k might have ye, she might she might want to describe it slight differently like bizarre you're right H You are Benly? No, she's actually not. She's not I was having this debate with someone actually, whether it's done Does she believe in what she says or is she just saying what she needs to to keep her job on GB newews? The thing that's quite unhinged about her is I think she believes what she says Tolly TB said, That was Beverly Turner with I don't predict a Rriot from her new album. I'm talking Bllocks again. And David John Green wrote Beverly Turner is the woman that scoffed at a weather expert when told that the previous heat wave was dangerous. The ONS death stats showed a significant rise in deaths over the period. Turner should be made to apologize to the relatives of the deceased for laughing at the risks. I actually remember that clip. We featured it on the tra. Yeah we did. She was saying how, but she bas start laughing about how hot weather isn't a risk Yeah it's just nightices weather. It's just nices weather and that's just like that's not riot That's not a riot. There are someone who' that fi to a house's to normal. Just a busy night at the police. Yes,s just like it's what I do and I'm just in a vaguely bad mood Okay, weird, Sir Tomalot said, The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. it was their final most essential command. Precisely. Yeah. and HS FairTch said Bev clearly has the IQ of a room temperature. Yeah. Anyway, look, what an absolute ight there is a little bit of light in the dark and it was reported all over the place. There were anti racism rallies following all of that unrest in Belfast. and that gladdened my heart. Sarah Kay posted an aerial partial view of the anti racist anti fascist crowd in Belfast right now, City haall to the left for scale. This is the real Belfast Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. I think that's another dimension to this. obviously anybody knows their history. Bloody hell. I think the people of Belfast of a certain age have seen enough unrest to last in a lifetime.s just so depressing. Yeah, But you know it was well covered byider was Goodall on the news agents's pod which is that you don't tend to see sort of Catholics and Protestants come together for a cause and yet actually These riots did bring together those two sides Pose whatever it is that opposing people of color. Anyway, Aden Benkov wrote very well on Substuck about all of this and made a very pertinent point. The fact that you had hundreds of masked men in Belfast terrorizing families. The attacked were very organized, prominent public figures, including the richest man in the world openly promoting and glorying in the violence online And yet, despite all of that, only nineteen individuals have so far been arrested By contrast, a largely peaceful demonstration outside Woolwich Crown Court happened on Friday against the conviction of four Palestine action protesters led to a total of one hundred seven arrests I know an example of the wrong bloody people. Can we get back on the plane and go, Kate, Kate, you need to have another birthday. Immediately we were out there for Kate's fortieth, Kate. Organize that again. Thank you very much. twenty seven arrest, Palestine action protesters. Yeah nineteen arrests for those broaking problegrams. And of course, the protests in Woolwage were happening because the High Court overturned the ruling that the prescribing of Palestine action was lawful because it was unlawful, lawful No Anyway. Basically we're all stuffed, more pensioners carted off. Yeah. Politics UK reported Palestine action activists have been jailed for a total of twenty two years for causing one point two million pounds worth of damage and fracturing a police womoman's spine at an Israeli weapons factory. So look We're not condoning that. If that was my kid, I'd be like, what are you doing? You idiot, you've basically messed your entire life up because they're behind bars now And so as reported by the BBC Samuel Corner twenty three denies charges of grievous bodily harm He says what happened is he hit a police officer with a sledgehammer fracturing her back because he heard someone screaming and he feared his codefendent was being injured by security Their intention was to shut the weapons factory down and sort of damage it. so that it couldn't in turn damage Gaza and damage Palestinians. but yes, I think we can all agree, they obviously needed to face the law you know, grievous bodily harm, you know, criminal damage Are they terrorists they their bloody kn. And that's our issue is they have been charged As terrorists So look,, the point is here, if you cause that kind of criminal damage, if you know you w' humans, you human damage, then of course you should face the full wrath of the law But what's terrifying is that Th activists, whatever you want to call them They have been jailed under terrorism charges. So in fact, someone else pointed out that Palestine actction was not a designated terrorist group at the time of the offenses And the case is believed to be the first time convictions for criminal damage have been classified as being connected to terrorism It feels like they are being made an example of. Somebody called Harriet Williamson over on X said the lady Chief Justice said the prescription of Palestine action struck a fair balance and that Palestine action is not a peaceful civil disobedience group like the suuffragette. She got absolutely walloped for that one. as Robin Hanford said, this is historically illiterate I can think of at least one instance where a suffragette supporter planted a bomb in public transport. Suorters of Palestine action have not gone nearly as far in their actions. Didn't they attack Parliament as well? Yeah, they did. they did. you know, there, they were quite violent Anyway it's yeah all it bollocks. Do you want to hear from somebody? Do you want to hear from somebody who was outside the court? This is one of the protess Rsted, I'm in a holding pen surrounded by the leice. This is ridiculous because I've been arrested as a terrorist just for holding a sign that expresses my opposition to genocide, my view that saving lives is not terrorism, which I think is a fairly ordinary and controversial view. and my support of people that are actually taking effective, non violent action to try and stop a genocide that is being committed as we speak here today, and our government is not doing anything about it, so it is up to ordinary people to take legal necessary action. I'm not a terrorist. Free Gaza, stop the genocide. Now, call me old fashion. I think I'd rather encounter her in the street than one of those masked fugs in Belfast. Not much we could do about that. Hopefully we'll brighten en up of it in the next couple of episodes we're going to stuff It's be busy to be busy Marina. Trump is looking even less with it, more deimmented by the day. He's at the G seven right now actually, just sort of like just looking like a lost man that's escaped from an old people' home Yeah. I mean, my go, the White House by the time he's finished with it They're going to have to rebuild it, aren't they? No. We'll talk about that tomorrow's episode because it is trarailer Parksville over there. Yeah, and Gwyneth, how gross she's been. Anyway, let's do a few underrated and then we'll leave you with pudding as ever. So I just found a little thread I don't know why it made me laugh. It was posted by A daddy issues and this person said, I'm bored. Tell me something that gave you the ick about someone you were dating. I mean the pettiest and most unhinged reason I need inspiration. I'm sure most of you know what an ick is and it's literally a moment where someone you previously fancied or quite liked You just go, o and it just you go off. So this is before you've cemented it and fallen in love, right? early days and just it can be the smallest thing. So somebody called Jade Duchch said, just the ticket when I suggested a place for a walk Oh, that's quite a sweet one jacket. someone else said He wore a utility belt on a lunchime walk with one of those absolutely huge tape measures on.
