See y you this summer Today's show is supported by Garmin, and thanks to their tax trainers, I don't even have to leave the house to get a proper ride in Mine's literally set up all year round. There are so many reasons that I jump on it instead of heading outside. like when it's snowy or icy? Or I just want to do some clean intervals. Or I don't have much time. Or I'm dog sitting? Or I want to ride at unsafe times of the day. Indoor training is totally different and a much more pleasant experience now than it was when I started cycling Yeah, stuff like the motion plates are a game changer. You just have way more ability to simulate a real ride. The road feels, steep virtual climbs, sprinting. And when you pair tacks with an edge head unit, rally power pedals, your Garmin watch, or a heart rate monitor, you get a full indoor outdoor training system backed up by heaps of data. So big thanks to Garmin supporting the show It's the world I guess who's back. Back good good Probably not for very long though I'm convinced that I'm dying. Yeah I, this is probably one of the last ones for me I don't know it's old age but allergies are killing me. Oh same. but I've always complained about hay fever. Jimmy complains about a hay fever. hay fever is one thing but now of a sudden it's morning wke up, my ears were swirlllen on the inside. I mean, I can't prove, but that's what it felt like and I took an allergy tablet and it's gone away A couple of weekso Laure tried to kill me Geez tried to give me some academia and N to try and then I was in full on like just everything's swallowed. Double tablets. So I don't know, like This was never a problem before Nature is just waiting me out. I do think it is an age thing I think the older you get, the more your body is trying to tell you You're done. No, but mean that's not how like Whenever you small you've got allergies, everybody says, arere you going to grow out of it Yeah, because becauseuse you' why am I going into it? Be because your body's giving up. It's had enough. Yeah. Exactly what Your time is done Just wind it in. justust d you. Get a good life insurance policy and move on. Put your name on it. Exactly.. I'll get a good life insurance policy in your name and we'll move on. Put my details in the bottom in the comments so if anybody else wants to get a policy as well at the same time. Yeah, good investment Welcome to the Wild O's podcast, The show where we chat about bike stuff. I am Jimmy, and this week we are joined by prodroucer Emily. Hello and friend of the show, Nick the Mechanic, subbing in for Francis. Thank you taller than him, but yeah, a little bit. we had to raise the camera slightly. And of course, thanks to Garmin for supporting this show. Well, thank you for joining us, Nick. Good to have you back.. Last time you turned up in a cowboy hat A jean shirt. Jeans, boots, Yeahah, dressed down today. Tamling my inner, you know, yes, but like white t shirt it's still very cowboy. Dn't bring the hart. nextxt time How are you, Jimm? I'm good, I'm good. I feel positive. The weather has been pleasant I've been riding bikes. We've been doing lots of cade stuff, the house renovation is renovating, which is good And I started looking at fields just for For business or pleasure? Pleasure, I'd like to own a field. Yeah and preferably have I don't know if rescuing animals is the thing that I want to do, but I'd like to have a place where animals need a home could have a home. Allright, T Bir Pino, calm yourself done Have you must have seen this story, have you, Jimmy? Well, yeah, I'm aware of the story. Okay. Tibo pino The retired pro is basically living your dream right now. He is. He very much is This was in the our of France Chain documentary, I'm sure as well. He retired from cycling and then bought a farm in the countryside somewhere And now he has goats, he has sheep He has Sow some cows. I think there's two very stark differences though to how he's doing things and how I would. One. Every single bit of his farm setup is like clean. Yes, I do have to say clean, you could say. Can you trust a farmer where everything is completely spotless. No is the answer. And the second mistake he's making is he's inviting people into his house to watch the tour de France with him Yeah. I think he's setting up an air he's setting up a B andnb and he's partnered with Airbnb and he's going to let people stay there during the tour And I'm assuming there's a long term goal to maybe open it to the public. I'm assuming it's like one person gets to win it, first come first served I don't know someday, find out yourself, I'm not doing his PR for him, but I'm assuming when that goes live, there's no current prices. That's going to be a pricey trip. I feel like a helicopter ride was included in the itinerary for this trip. I think the tour de France do these like media packs because we've been invited on it a few times where it's ride in a team car, go up in a helicopter, go to a VIP thing where they'll give you a glass of prosecca or something or other. Champagne, I'm hoping, it's Tour de France. That's the jo Does this mean he's the only ex pro cyclist that's not Tecking up gravel racing I guess so It is tough graft though, having lotads of animals. What people forget is that it's not the The work is hard, don't forget that, but there's no holidays. Yes I'm going to go for three weeks. Let's just let the sheep. sort themselves out for three weeks. It's My mom has lots of sheep and chickens. S Shetland pawnies with thes two pawnies and they have three eyes between them And when she goes away, we become the farm hands instead. but she reciprocates because she takes Bella when we go away. so fair trade. You have actually massively oversold has loads of sheep because when you say someone has loads of sheep, most people will think hundreds because that's how many sheep are on the far It's thirteen? It's a small holding with Eleven sheep. To me that's a lot of sheep. Well there is a lot of sheep because they're like a normal person. normalount of sheep for people isn't zero. Yeah. So eleven is quite a lot, I think. It is, yes. but when you're talking about sheep, people think you're talking about farm In which case you go with' leaven and sheep, they'll be like, oh, okay. fine. okay. well I feel we've tangented Sufficiently enough. Yes, suufficiently. tangent over, I'm gonna to bring us back ono. Oh Bike stuff. Bike news. firstly There's been big drama at the transr Balkan ultra race The organizers got a tip off that the race leader was cheating and they went full on detective Moore to catch him in the act followed this guy who's a Polish rider called Rlavsky. And they secretly filmed him sitting in what looked like a support van when he thought no one was looking, but that is against the rules because it is a self supported event He was disqualified seventy kilometers before the end of the one thousand four hundred kilometer race There has been some dispute about the extent of the help that he actually received. Race organizers say they saw this van multiple times at multiple checkpoints and that he received a full supply, Radoslav However said Wh he accepted the disqualification, he maintains he only took a bottle of Cke and a banana of his partner without thinking. B that bottle of Cke was delicious though. Worth it Nick, I can't help think that perhaps you know this man's pain and injustice Yes, I mean outrage. So for those of you don't know, Nick was in a similar situation. He got disqualified from a self supported ultra event for I want to say getting help, but I'm not sure if it was a help or if it was a hindrance. D't you end up in your mate's house drinking some wine? Yes Yes So firstly I don't do this for living, I didn't do it for a job. I was not really interested. I couldn't care less about the disqualification or finishing it. All I wanted was the straver that said five hundred and eighteen odd kilometers. That's it. That's what I was interested in. Right. So in my head, my only rule for the event was Don't take any shortcuts ride the full distance. that's what I did But Turn comises in We were rolling to Tineneemouth to get some food. Last stop we get food and things and I had a brilliant idea of bringing my friend Rob and asking Are you at home G gonna cook us some food I Little Josh here some reason didn't get disqualified, rolled in with me. We had some wine some food. I had a shower And then we carried on with the trp. Sorry, are you snch snitching O obviously this was happening now and people are snitching at each other Who snitchs on you? How do they find out? U Josh the video I think's really funny not realizing that he's in the video as well. So Josh is a YouTuber, Josh Reid. He was filming the event and filmed you. So you weren't trying to hide anything No no, no, say. I mean, I think fair enough on the organizers, rules is rules. And I think same in this case, rules is rules. And I like that they have gone full sleuthing mode. They've received some reports by the sound of it of foul play and they've gone to great lengths to prove it for themselves. literally they post this stuff on Instagram and it's little Zoomed in videos of him sat in a cl. In all fairness, I do think it's a much more serious thing if You arere racing and he's winning it. Yeah I mean, you kind of like if I was racing and there's people that I mean the event that I did was called The Land Between. It's a brilliance event organized by Rich Rothwell Um Wh's currently trolling me, sending me messages saying like it'd be very sad thing to have a DQ as my final result. need to do it again this year I'm never gonna suffer like that ever ever ever again U This guy was winning. If we were doing it and I was taking away a win from somebody by doing stuff, then yes, by all means all taking it as a serious thing I literally did it as a bike ride where supposing this guy was Job I'm assuming if you' winning a race like that Quite handy so yeah don't know. it's It's very difficult to police these events really, isn't it by the nature of them? A lot of them are very off road, remote, rugged, Yes, so there's loads of rumorss going for the years and years. I've been hearing all the ultra riders complaining to me saying that People are cheating with they're pre booking hotels And things like that all the get to places and they've got somehere to stay getting supported. Apparently this is quite a that's been going on for ages. Nobody's getting tested either. So what is the level of doping? Obviously that's a I don't know. I'm just saying but it's not. Not a UCI event. So Yes, that's what we need. The UCI needs to crack down ultra racing. That's what we all want. You can say some really controversial things on this, but it's a strange sport. I think people are the racing aspect of it I'm not really that interested in because very few people win these races and anybody I've done this as a test asked people afterwards like who won the race And noobbody can tell me. unless it was one of their friends. So like, I know who won the trucker ultra Maddy because I know Maddie. I said, But if I don't know Maddy, I' I don't know who came second. I don't know who won the men's race So it's yeah. I think lots of people know Maddie now because she has such a big personality which shone through unbound that she's now kind of pulled up to a new level, I think. Yes. But I mean there's I don't know when the men's unbound. So I think that's the best thing about adventure racing is that If If you take away the event being just about winning and performance, then all of a sudden it's about participating. And that was fundamentally the whole point of it. And then if you take away the benefit of being first versus fiftieth, then you can also then make it a safer event because then you have not everyone trying to ride through the night or not resting enough or taking dangerous risks. They can actually go, well Actually, if I have a bit of extra sleep, I'm safer for riding and it doesn't matter if I come fiftieth or thirty first. It's the experience. So yeah that's what it should be. Back to the one I did There's so many stories. Every day I remember something different that happened. I mean I slept in a public toilet on the floor for an hour. We just had loads of crazy things happened, which was fun And then the flip side is the kid that won Ollie who rides with us on Saturday sometimes. Um His story is insane. Young lad, I mustiss be about twenty one, twenty two years old guessing, I don't know exactly how was, But yeah, he rode with a camel back with Come a backpack with water in it a bag of sugar and some salt. And then he had two bed ons on his bike, each was just filled with energy gels that he just squeezed in. And then I think you stopped for something like twenty minutes for the full event And the twenty minutes was essentially spent putting more water in that bag for more sugar and salt Um, I mean, how' that to live for twenty five hours worth of riding gets a job done. Yeah, But I mean it's yeah it's just suffering. And this is some people, you know, you say that's this is what it should be about is just enjoying the experience. Jimmy, there are always going to be people who want to compete and want to race and I'm not saying that's what it should be about. Yeah. What I'm saying is by it not having just emphasis on who won it Yeah. It allows it to to be participation. Yeah true. You get good stories regardless of whether there are winners or losers. But you get that in also, I think grandours and stuff like that. if you actually step back from the results, there are quirky other stories as well. I would say big for me, a big thing is Dirt Ra versus Gralock is a good. So Dir Ra and Gralock's two events in the UK. The one is a UECI gravel race and the other one, even though people say they win the Dirt Riva, it's not a race.'s sportive essentially. But it's just two completely different atmospheres. They have the same amount of entries, roughly two thousand people. But the one is like more of a festival party vibe and the other one's a race So I don't think either's better, but for me, I personally prefer the the social aspect of things Trans Balkan. did we talk about me doing a DNA test and finding out that actually loads of my DNA is from the Balkan region? Oh yeah, you're Balkan. Yeah I'm Balkan. I don't really know much about the Balkans. I didn't know what the Balkans was. Neither did I. Tell me what the Balkans is I do still don't really know, but with this being trans Balkan and it goes from Slovenia to Montenegro and I know I have blood comes from Montenegro. packaged in a jiffy bag or I've got blood waiting for the end of the race. Be you used to always tell me that you're Italian, but now now it turns out that you're probably just a slave. Well very like the Roman Empire. Yeah ye. Yeah. because Montenegro parassed. was under Venetian rule for a long time. So yeah, Jimmy thought he grew up with lots of very Italian culturally. Italian and culturally, but it's potentially because of the Venetian owned ass. cororrect. Yeah. The history is really fascinating, I think. Yeah. I think we should go. Yeah Maybe not do the transrans Balkan's maybe a bit too much riding for me, but I'll do the riding, you can drive a sport van and give me bananas and cook co on the way Speaking of monumentally huge rides, Dr. Sarah Reugins who we had on this podcast a couple of months ago, she has started her world record attempt and she is absolutely flying. So Sarah is aiming to set a new fastest time riding from the bottom to the top of Europe It's a full distance of six thousand kilometers, which is about three thousand seven hundred miles, and she is already over a quarter of the way. So at the point of recording, she had averaged about five hundred forty kilometers a day, which is about three hundred thirty five miles and hit those targets, she is only sleeping for ninety minutes a day sounds absolutely horrible and terrifying It's not as risky, quite as risky as it sounds. She does have full support crew medics monitoring her for cognitive function and everything. You know, it's a proper, proper pro setup So although it is incredibly incredibly risky and arguably very dangerous, they are doing it incredibly professionally. Ultimately what I'm getting at is, donon't try this at home, please Why should doing it all upheal It really north just sou North, north up south down. Everybody knows this Yeah, she's absolutely flying. She said her personal goal was to find the limit of her endurance rather than break the worldld record book Right now, I think she may be on target to get that record. She's ahead of schedule at the minute. Yeah, ag. But of course, you would expect the distance per day to start coming down , but I've been following it on Socialun and she just looks so locked in at this point did you see Lail Wilcox also She rolled out this week. She is tryrying to be the fastest person male or female to around the world. personerson, ye. Yes unpopular opinion, but I'm sick of this around the world, nonsense. What do you mean? I mean don't get wrong, I really like Leil. I mean, I think what she's doing is excellent But everybody's riding around the world at the moment And they've got these records, but it makes no sense to me at all because there's some weird guidelines And nobody is actually riding around the world. I want somebody to ride around world you know I mean? What in like a pedalo? No, so for instance, okay, I'll give you the exact route that you have to do otherwise I'm not taking you serious. Wa,a, wait,'re not saying that you're not gonna to take Lil Wilcock seriously. I'm not taking anybody' serious. Okay I'm not singling her out. I'm just saying that you're singling everyone. Let's say you live I'm going to use England as an example. You live in England You can get the ferry across to Amsterdam or France, wherever you want Then I expect you to ride over the whole length of Europe, the whole length of Asia Head up to the top of Russia, go to called the Bearing Strait. The Bearing Strait into Alaska. What ride the bearing strait with a peddler Oh wait for No, s noow way. At that point, I'm happy if you take a boat. Okay. When as far as you can go with land. Right. T the boat for a little distance. You're in Alaska. Then you have to ride across Now the furthest point you can go towards the east would be in Brazil, I think. So you're saying go down through Central America, down into South America. Exactly. Yes, if there's rivers or boats you have to cross they by all means use the boats, not airopplanes. Yeah. Then when you get there Brazil, I think it' Brazil. Don't quote me on this. You can just check what's the furthest furthest Yeah. R. You can get a flight over to Gambia which is the furthest west part from Africa R up gets off back to England, done. You've ridden around the world. Okay. W, I've seen people doing around the world where they the ride to Turkey or somewhere and then flying over to other side of the world and writing more because I've got all thesees weird guidelines. I would say to clarify, I think what you're saying, you don't hate the player, you hate the game. Y. And the game, I think was designed by Guinness World Records. I've had a look at their official rules And to get an around the world record, you have to do a minimum distance of twenty nine thousand kilometers, eighteen thousand miles, the journey should be continontuous in one direction, either east or west, west or east. You have to cross every line of longitude and go to opposite an tipodil points. you have to be at furthest points from each other at some point, and the total distance traveveled, including flights and ferries should exceed the length of the equator, which is something like forty thousand kilometers, twenty five thousand miles So Fine with that record, but what you're saying is you want a new around the world challenge to be ridinging as much land as you possibly can, basically. Exactly. I don't know the exact rules, so don't quote me on any of this, but if you plan this properly, you can most likely pick countries that it's easier to ride in. Australia, America, things to be western countries where the roads are all serviced and in good condition. I'm not saying there's places in the East of'nock, but as an example, we pllaces where you can speak your home language and then just ride a bit more zigzaggy to cross the distance and then fly in between places. I can cheoose. you now that doesn't meanin B is do what you want do but it doesn't work for me. I guess the I take your point and I think it's slightly tongue in cheek. I guess the practicalities end up being that if you're, for example, going to go across Asia, do you end up in parts of Russia, you know, we saw that guy that got arrested at the border because he didn't have the correct papers and stuff like that. Is there actually a practicality element about safety or just speed as well. Well yeah, if you're just going by these Guinness rules, you're always going to optimize it as much as you can. If it gets over the line and it gets this record, you're going to do it in the least friction way possible.' But you didn't ride around the world. Okay, fine. You flew and boated around the world is better cycling in between. Oh dear. I'm not king its way to this one. On the topic of the man in Russia If you just waited a week, could have had his visas and gotten in the train and it wouldn't have had a problem. Yeah, but you wouldn't have got the record either He wasone for a record. Well, but add that into the record like in the How long it takes you to get a visa . I actually think what Nick is talking about is the inaugural Nick Vieri ultra Distance Rise where he sets the route and the rules and rid abed by them otherwise you're own. I think money where your mouth is or doesn't count. Now I'll start the race. I'm not gonna do it, but'll why do it? organize a cot do. Why can't do it things to do.. You have to wrecky it. Tueue. The thing is, I guess what so in all of these you get to choose your route What you're talking about is, I think, it sounds like a set routot, basically, isn't it To an extent, I'm happy for you to take detours on certain roads and things, but it doesn't sound like you are. What I want to say is how I wouldd make the set Rice a start point. And then essentially points where you're allowed to use crossings Yeah. So you can fly from these airports You can use the boats from these places, but your flight has to go to this airport, your boat has to go to that dock and that's it. In between, ride howver you want, but you're riding your bike How long is this gonna to take? actuallyually it's a multi stage ultra that you're talking about You did it a one ago, but it's like it's your time and you have to plan. So then it's a whole fun thing. likeike I do these dootwashing things is quite good because you like look at them and like, o, the ferry iss leaving at this time. If you miss this ferry, you're going to wait six hours for the next one. Who's going to make it on to there And some guys realize, okay well we'm going to miss a ferry. so might as well sleep now, take it easier catch it when it gets across and then make up it's like leapfrogging, um Have you also there's another ultra called, I don't know if this will do it all points north in the UK And you've got points you have to ride to, where you can make your own routes in between, but you have to go to the points. And then it's essentially everybody's got their own idea of what's going to be the best thing. what's hillier, what's flatter, what's going That's similar transconti and stuff like that as well, isn't it does checkite Yes, but've yeah, and they've got set things you need to try, yes, but not really. Transcante to an extent, yes, but it's a small linear We're all points north at points are justird. Yeah, you can't make them in the loop. you have youre you're going to back up on yourself at some point. Yeah, I guess the difference with all points North is planning is integral It's Like really integral to whether you're competitive in it or not. Yes. And then the weather because some people go east some go west and then the one side of the Pen Ises it's raining and the other side's dry So some of them are like getting washed away while the other halves Unlike Nick, I I'm aware of two groups of people currently riding around the world, Leail Wilcox and Amy Cycling Adventgures and her husband, who I can't remember is his name is Kyle, even though he is absolutely lovely. And I do accept that they are all riding around the world. I let it go I let it go. I accept that they're riding an incredibly long way and it's going to be incredibly difficult and hard and massive feat of endurance and ustain power, but around the world I also want to make the point that Like, I'm not making excuses for you, but this is not a good look when it's both women doing this. But you had a problem with this right now. I'm not saying them. loads of people that the rules have been the same. It's not like they've He's always hated. If you're a man in doing it, he also hates you. Let's quote this They haven't changed the rules. They're just following the rules. It's the rules that's a problem, notot them Yeah. It's the same thing with the our record. What a lot of nonsense that is these days. I mean people with faster bikes and oh you've won an ar rcket in this category or that category. it's No, no, like M M stardzers So good, so good. Download the State Farm app or go online at statefarm dot comot like a good neighbor State Farm is there I mean I am going to move this on. because Everyone is talking about the UCI's latest move to ban big bike computers Honestly, I am sick at this point of talking about the UCI on this show. So we are going to make this one brief. They don't want head units getting any bigger They say it's potentially unsafe because it increases riders's cognitive load So they're proposing a new maximum dimension. The dimensions would be bigger than the largest head unit currently available on the market from the major brand. So it actually doesn't really affect anything right now. It just means that we won't see outfront laptops in the Peloton in the future, I guess Some commentators have pointed out that screen size doesn't actually have that much impact on what's going on on the screen So DC Rainmaker argued that a larger screen actually makes it safer as it's easier to see data field at a glance, and you can also see maps in greater detail for tricky desents. and fellow YouTuber GP Lama pointed out that potentially distracting software functionality like alerts and notifications happen at any screen size. So their question was, if this is about safety Does it actually work in practicality Al alsoso Don me from wrong, riders usually opt for the tiny ones anyway because they're weight saving So you know, honestly, who knows with this one, but none of us race anyway. so who actually cares Yes. I don't think that makes any sense what they said over there because Um, who people you quoted. Okay. Yeah. Biggest screen. It's got more details and stuff but if you've got more details and more things on there and stuff you can read You spend longer looking at it. I still remember when I got my first slightly bigger head unit I did ride over a pavement and smash my wheel. Right Be I was looking at Stravver, they had this feature where you Pro still have it like w the cow in It gives you a live update on what you're doing in your KRM And I ended up sprinting just looking down on my screen the hallway The flip side to it is I know an ultra rideer a Dutch one, and I know the UCI is not involved in that side of things one of my friends who actually watches television. While doing the long rides, he puts his phone on his handlebars and then he's got films download on and he just watches that. I mean I'm sorry but that's dumb. No, no, but exactly. that's what I mean. It's the bigger screen. yeah The W Ace is massive and that's one I think they're talking about. That's the biggest one. I'm not sure if there's anything bigger. and Yeah, it yeah a nonstarter. You are onto something though, because because But maybe the UCIs realized that the Gen Alpha iPad babies are turning sixteen this year the first iPad came out in twenty ten which means the next generation of pros coming through Basically don't know how to cure boredom or self soot without a screen. a bd. I mean, I'm being very fstigious here. listen, the UCI knows that the twenty one day grand tour is a long, tedious, boring suffher fest, and it's only a matter of time before De Cathlon are deploying Sans to prelad Blueiey onto thirteen inch garment head units so that the riders can disassociate while they're going at Montfontu. Wow. That's outrageous. I'm joking. They are already b computers where you can load third party apps on. There are bike computers out there that you can watch shows on it. Txt messages, emails, you can put I know people that are like replying to their things on their head units and reading reading reading like the emails and stuff on their Hed uniness well going on. So it's like yes, yes, slightly less UCI. But all of that doesn't actually come down to screen size. Like, yes, fair enough if you have a bigger screen size, maybe you can see it better. But actually if they want to police that, they're going to have to start going into software functionality. And then you open a can of worms like look, what they're going through with SRAM right now in that you know, stuff's already brought to market and they're trying to retroactively ban it and it's going to courts and stuff I think if they delve into the software side of stuff, they're going to have a problem. but if they actually want to start policing safety in that way they're going I need to cut inike This only applies to UCI races. It is incredibly boring. You said we weren't going to talk about it for aes. please can we wrap up this boring section and move on Not at UCI but I'm happy for all the big boys. UCI and Sram and everybody see each other non stop. you know if it means they stop seeing small bike shops and cafes using names and branding, know so yeah Fine Move on. Lastly, the women's eo ended in victory for Demi Vollering. She finally completed the full set of women's Grand Tour wins and in magnificent style too It was a little bit of a we to dejar vu for poor Anna Van Breggen She was in the pink jersey up until the final weekend, but again on the final day. However, it did make for incredibly exciting watching. And I had a lot of unpopular opinion submissions this week along the lines of women's pro cycling is better and more inviting to watch than the men's right now. It is It absolutely is. Yeah. if you like stuff happens. Yeah, if you like it not to be obvious who's going to win. I mean, I think I would say Demi definitely was a favorite, but at least there is a battle up until right at the end. Also because they're shorter, it makes it more intense of a battle. But regardless of whether we think a particular person is going win, it's attacking cycling and that is what is exciting. there is explosions of activity happening throughout the race and that's bike racing. Yeah. I also don't think you have to say one is definitively better than the other just both citing When when we talk about cross country mountain bike racing, women's racing is better. It's not about it's not even debatable because's more like exactly what he said, it's just more exciting that they compete against each other in the main's one. shows up and he wins everything. Well there you go. I mean, it sounds like it's not so much of an popular opinion because I heard it a lot this week. Demi rised the final stage on Francces's beach crruiser just to make sure that she was definitely over the six point eight Bike weight limit. didid she? Yep Y. And still won. And still won, believe it or not? Well, she didn't win the stage, did she? She won the jersey. She won the jersey He was fourth, I believe, in the stage It will be exciting to see what happens at the tour. Kid Fantasy League round up Congratulations to the winner Fazzini, second place was Woody and third place was X six J eight X. How did we do? Well, out of me, you and Benny who were in the league. I'm assuming I won. Benny came last, you came second. No, Benny came First of us, he came tenth overall. What? Second was me thirteenth. thirird was you twenty sixth So sad, never mind. Right, enough news. We've had enough of the UCI. We have a bike mechanic with us in the studio, so it would be silly for us to not take advantage of that We wanted to find out what a bike mechanic knows that the average rider might not little habit shortcuts, a bit of advice that gets overlooked. So we've asked him to come prepared with a list of things he wishes every rider knew when it comes to bikes, maintenance and dealing with mechanics So Nick What's number one on your list? Well, the first mistake you made was telling me to come prepared make some stuff up as we go These are no particular order, but the first one is Don't buy or set up your bike Oh One event or one ride justust think of longer term. I mean, unless you're only using the by forone event, obviously that's a completely different thing B big thing that I see in bike shops, lo of people coming to me talking to me about the pros have done this or somebody's done that. I was like, yes, but They have the luxury of changing the bikes for every stage and not buying them in the first place The other thing that I see is People talking to me about gearing, so they're putting some crazy thing on their bike and it's like, for One event they're doing once a year or one trip they're doing to the Alps ' as a guess, what are you doing for the rest of the? I'm not saying it's not going to work, but it's just Second consideration was to do ninety percent all the time, not ten percent of the time and then buy or build your bike perspective of that if that makes sense. So yeah it's my first tip And if you guys got any questions What would you do if You live somewhere that's predominantly flat And you do do an annual trip to somewhere like the Alps, which is incredibly hilly because on that basis you would build a bike that was didn't have a vast gear range and perhaps could be a heavier more aero bike. But maybe if you were going to the Alps to do a monumental week of riding, you'd want something with more gear ratio. I keep hearing this repeatedly about gear jumps, gear jumps., gear jumps is just not a problem anymore It's something people have it's one of those things that The internet just likes to repeat. It's an easy comment when you do a review of something and things like that. Most group sets these days, all the modern ones have very small jumps R roodad and gravel group says small jumps for the bottom end of the cassette and then as it gets to the climbs it jumps up. So you can do to some extent for both when it comes to gearing But at the same time again, it's If you're only doing one trip a year and everything else is flat, then either rent bike when you go on the trip you can't, I don't know, personally, I just don't think you can build a bike for you one trip per year unless that is highlight of audoocycling But I mean, you're going to say you want something, this is we're talking about gear ration now, for instance. you're doing it for one ride and then the rest of the year it's not ideal for you So it's a bit of, yeah And I saying there' options of getting it to work for both, but People can go in and comment's going go crazy but just think about what you're doing if that makes sense what you are yeah. Fair enough, okay, what else you got for us? Washing your bike Too much is arguably just as bad as not washing your bike at all if you don't know what you're doing and It also depends on way and how you are riding. Washing your bike entails two different things Be greasing your wife and washing your bike wo separate aspects. So your drive trarain, you want to keep it free of too much grease and gunk build up But also doesn't mean you have to spray your whole bike down every single ride Um So yeah, it's just finding the right balance, depending on the season and what kind of conditions you're riding in. So if you're riding somewhere dry, even in England We have a week every year where it doesn't rain. For that week, you don't need to wash your bike every day But it doesust is not going to do anything to it. I Yes, kind of find moderation in the two or know what you're doing. Yeahah. So what will happen if what bad thing will happen if you're washing your bike all the time? So we get a lot of people overwash their bikes and they just wash all the grease out of everything. Right. And then essentially there's nothing protecting the metal surfaces in the bearings on the chains and the cassettes end every single like nook and cranny in the bike and then Essentially that causes you more problem than not having washed it. So it's too clean and then they're not reg greasing. Yes. So if you're going to be diligent with your washing, you need to be diligent with your regreasing. Yes, exactly So it actually turns out that I wash my bike the perfect amount of time Bizarly, it was the first time I would give you because I never really ag. I've never had issues with your bike. We're gonna agree on something for the first time ever Oh my goodness. But then I don't know if it's because you cycle through so many different bikes that I don't know which one. there's work bikes and your bikes but yeah yours have never been that bad. Franc is on the other hands nightmare. Oh yeah, he's terrible Whereas I work on the basis of just keep if it if it If it sounds bad It needs a clean And if it's dirty, it needs a clean is basically what I go with. Yes. And I mean, I know people can down in the comments and I'll say, Ohh, but if you back your bike, your chain, then Do doesnn't get a dirt. Yes,. But then you also have a third of the amount of time a week to actually ride it Yes, but this is where I think this is I mean, I don't go too much of a tangent, but this is where there's balance. like in the UK because there's weight most of the time I like a more lube based thing. So if you're going to use Wax use a drop on lube one for that because you can put on every single day without having to take your chain off. But I live to we' really dry And you're not going to wash your bike if it's not going to rain, then by all means hot wax it. and leave it for a while. or use a oilingetss Basically, what I'm saying is just find balance. Everything in moderation what's next on your list? Third one is they are some basic maintenance things Every writer should know and not purely rely on a professional at the bike shop, including fixing a puncture yourself. You need to be able to fix your own punctures. becausecause if you're rid byself in the middle of nowh And that happens, nobody's going to come and save you I feel like everyone knows that one. Yes, but there's a few more that I think I don't know if that's true. Although we did used to ride with someone who was a very accomplished triathlete And they did not know how to fix a puncture. We've probably ritten with more people than you've realised don't know how to fix a puncture. Fine, okay. if I'ing your punctures level one, what else is there? So for me, the main thing in the shop is adjusting and tightening your headset loads of people kind of know it's loose or possibly don't know that it's loose and they just ride with it for ages and that will destroy your bike You keep doing this, this is one of the things where what they call the ring of deeath on your stereot tube and it could kill you So yes, that's a very extreme Mind And but that's something you should just be able to adjust because it's Technically three bolts.. and just knowing the sequence could save you so much effort, especially also if you buy a new bike, eventually after in the first six weeks or so your bike is the h is going to come loose. That's just a fact as it beds in and your writing. So Everybody needs to learn how to adjust and tighten the headset, I think. When you first said that Shock entered my mind that someone wouldn't know how to enter how to set up, how to tighten their headset But actually It's me. But I think you actually would. No, I'm not ping a lot. I think you actually would know how to do it. The point I was going to make is at first I was it seems so basic, but actually The the way that you preload the headset on a bike is so weird Like it is an odd design. And like yes, it works and it makes sense and once it's all set up there's generally no issues with it. Yeah, it is actually it's like it's like a How would an alien design the steering on a bicycle and that's what it actually is like. Yes, but it work. but the whole thing is just that's one of the aspects of things you can learn. I think in Emily's defense, I think you make up one of the eighty percent. Yeah. would I would go as farast as say twenty percent of people know and eighty percent don't. Yeah. I agree with that.. And even then, I have seen people that Understand the basic concept, then miss a few steps because There's several aspects to it. So yes, I can go into detail, but Go see a bike shop or somebody that knows what they're doing and get them to try and Honestly or also just do a Google. there is there are Good, so, things on the internet. Google for all the other tips The one that I would say to go see somebody is a headset. Okay becausecause the problem is with everything else on this list that I'm going to talk about, you can use talk settings and things like that. A headset is the one bit where In theory, there is no actual talkr settings for it. It T settings for some of it, but not for all of it. Some of it is off feel So if I go into a bike shop with my cananyon and go, I don't know how to adjust my headset, can you help me? I'm going to get laughed out the shop on. I didn't buy the bike off them and Why should they help me? No, it's two aspects, obviously, you haven't bought the bike, but if you're getting it serviced over there or if you're willing to pay for the time U Yes, if you've bought the bike from a shop I would say the bare minimum they could do is show you how to do it if you ask because I mean, that's what you've paid for the service. I would say. And I might be wrong, I don't think I think there's probably fifty fifty of people who are buying their bikes online versus at a shop maybe even less. But if you've bought it online, you've generally bought it cheaper Yeah so they then spend the money. bas money. So during your service, which you're paying for, could you just say, I'm a little bit concerned that I actually don't know when if my headset is tight? Could you just show me so that I know I don't get myself. The big thing is it's a different thing for bike mechanics to teach how to service a hub Yeah, take a bottom bracket in and out. A headset adjust is a very quick job. It's one of those things where Bizarrely add on a price list in my shop forel the last twenty something years And I've never ever charged anybody for tightening a headset purely because Takes three seconds to do it. Oh, that's an exaggeration. Takes ten seconds to do. Think how rich you'd be if you had But it's almost one of those things where I can't justify because it's skill but not a skill you don't have to be skillful at it. just Once you know, you just need to know. Yeah. You just need to know if that makes sense. You're better off just showing the customer how to do. If you're going to charge a customer at least and show them what you did So they can do it the next time ye. Okay, fine. What other basic things would you say Brakes? P Brake pads. You need to be able to check your own brake pads to see if there's pad left stop you. It's just one of those things where it's a visual check. But also knowing the nuances of you can't use all of your brake pads. Yeah. So your brake pad are worn out when there's nothing left They worn out when there's only one third left in essence, some brake pads will have Markings on to help you Letespecially was room bak This break, I think Campbag for a short while made the p had little cutouts So when the cutouts was missing New York your braak pazzle wner. Learn how to do that. That's just an essential skill everybody should know. You should not be relying on somebody else for that What about rotors and rim brake braking surfaces? So rotors become more complicated because different rotors have different widths. you can measure it with the Vernia caliper. like a measuring device, but the problem is they need to know what the measurement is at's minimum. Some rotors out there now have started putting weight indicators So like little dots or when you use Jaguar as an example, they've got their logo. imprinted on the room on the D spke road to surface As soon as you can't see the logo anymore or you can't see the dot anymore Yorde This brake is worn out. and that's when you replace it D definitely Shimana will say they have minimum measurement. Yeah, but you have to have an to do that with and know how to use it properly You can get vonar calipers where they wear out and then they develop play and it's not going to be. And we're talking about point one of a millimeter tin measments. So that's why I think if anything Fine rotors worth weighing the cases on them. It's just much easier because when it Gone it's gone You know, it it's worn out Rum Bak surfaces becomes a lot more complicated because they hollow out and there's actual tools you can buy, well, no, I'm saying buy.'s tools they used to make back in the day. You can do it visually, but that's a bit harder because how much we is too much. without measuring it properly probably that's one I would Again, switch to the other way, say go see your bike shop. What else you got on the liston? Check tyre wear. Damage to your tyre is one thing So you can look at your ties, see if there's any holes in it or The carcass is sticking out or massive cuts or Um The rubber is cracking really badly. that can just do visually. In terms of we of the tyre, I think the easiest way to do at the moment is feel the tire. If it feels flat Um, the surface then yes generally worn out. So it goes from round to like a flat surface. I always find that For me, the indicator that a set of tyres is knackeered is it they start picking up loads of punctures. Okay, so next one is feeleeling if there's play in aspects like your wheels, your hubs, your bottom bracket, your cranks set, things like that, so just This is also difficult to explain, but you can feel if you hold your wheel and you wiggle it from side to side, if there's play if you can feel it rocking from side to side as lose something is wrong get it to a bikehop Same with your crank set, or even a mech really, isn't it on a rear Mac you can give it a wobble. Yes, wobble and play ye Yeah. Just make sure things aren't loose U thoseose are just stuff you could do yourself. It's going to take you ten seconds looads of videos on the internet will talk about M checks So going through that Um This is just stuff people should know, notot wait for a bike shop to do. Yeah, it's interesting. Basically what you're saying is When you have a piece of equipment that is related to safety, you should check for wear and tear on it regularly. And you're not saying that you then have to like diagnose it I don't know what the problem is, but it's an indicator that you should get it into a bike shop maybe even if you are getting a yearly service or a I think the problem is, yes, the services go loads, but loads of things that I've noticed over the years is people bring in this service when something is drrastically wrong. Yeah So brake pads of warner completely. the bike's making horrible noises it's not stopping, Ah, I'll take my bike in for service. Generally speaking Your brake pads could be worn on long before you need the service. So essentially just a few things you could do It just means that your bike's going to be much cheaper to maintain in the long run. Lastly is tighten your wheels. You don't want them falling off Lads of people is something you should check before every single ride to make sure your quick releases are tight and your through axles are tight You'd be surprised how many people come just shopping. It's been riding a bike with The wheel is effectively loose. and it's just dangerous and there's no excuse for it. It's not hard We gather here tonight to bring women back to their rightful place. Generally speaking, your rear tyre is going to wear faster than your front tyre A lot of people that I have customers come in just swap a set of tyres, but generally speaking I would always say you get a bike with a set of tyres and then you replace your rear tyire and then you replace both again and then just your rear and then both That makes any sense to you guys. Yeah. so one front for every two re. R highers, yes unless you cut a front tyire or damage it in some way You don't need to be buying two tyres every single time. Does the same go for brake pads Yes and no. Brake pad is quite an interesting thing. so what we've realized is you get front dominant Breakers and rear dominant breakers and some people that breraak evenly on both So guys at Graham that I ride with one of my friends, he uses his front brake pads almost five times as much as his rear brake pads. I wear my rear brake pads way more than my front brake pads So that's not a set thing that depends on how you ride your bike. Next one is Bring your bike kacked in mud or grace to a bike shop It's just rude. Yes, I know. I mean I like washing bikes. A the same time, if I'm doing a full service on your bike, some cases I've had where it takes longer to wash the bike than it takes to service it. And it's not a case of I'm complaining about washing some mud or some dirt off it when generally speaking it comes in completely caked and it's spinning hours scrubbing u Greece or things and it's just, yeah, it's just try and do itself beforehand or unless you're happy to pay for the washing. The difficulty is that How do we charge for that? Do I charge you if the washing is taking longer than the service? A I charging you more for the washing than I'm charging for the service? and people don't seem to want to accept that Sound advice. What we got next? The next one is once again, this just our bike shops out Creaking isn't always your bottom bracket Everybody comes in, my bike's crereaking and it must be at the bottom bracket. Yes, eighty percent of the time, maybe it is But your pedals can cause creaking, your saddle can cause creaking, your through axles can cause creaking, your hubs can cause creaking, your headset can cause creaking. that sounds like it's coming from the back. Your handlebars, your stokes oke Saddle rails I've even had. Yeah, saddle rails. Broken saddle. You can use Jimmy's name pedorry, shoes Shoes crereeak. Yeah. And you get people coming in and the bike shop rides like, oh, this there m's noise and the customer gets back, Ohh, I've just had my bike and still creaking and then it ends up being shoes. Ultimately, what you're saying at is if someone has a creaky bike and they want it remedied from a bike shop because they can't find it themselves, it might cost an absolute fortune trying to discover all of the possible places that it could be coming from Yes, Is this actually just a sales pitch for you saying? anyyone shows up on my shop with a creey creeaky bike You're going to charge them a thousand pounds for diagnostics. I did once think of making a creeak free service as an option But like I say, you could tighten the through axle and that fixes a problem. and then didn't even need the service at all. So the difficulty is is just have some understanding when you go to your bike shop that I've got customers who come in, My bike's creaking, Can you service a bottom bracket or Pe bring in your bike can you service my bottom bracket? S service the bottom bracket? and they come back, are you don't service my bottom bracket because the bike's still creaking. service the bottom bracket just means the Gree is not coming from there anymore coming from somewhere else Also in some cases, you have separate things creaking because generally if you overwash your bike and there's no grease in it orr if you haven't washed your bike and all the grease is washed out as well from all the mud and dirt Several things can creak. So one creak can be fixed, but it doesn't mean All of it's gone. So Yes. this is a mindfld. also Just because you can hear a crreek coming from one point doesn't mean it's where the creek is coming from. U and some bikes elevate creeks. so very light bikes with hollow carbon tubes tend to be louder because's like you'll understand more musical instruments essentially. So ye What's next? A very fast, spinny bottom bracket or bearing isn't a good thing It's generally a really bad thing. Yeah, but I've seen those videos on all over the internet where someone spins a crank and it spins for ages and everyone's like, Y. So why is that not a good thing? If it's spinning for ages, then there's no friction. That's an excellent marketing thing, but You can do that on all bottomackets. It doesn't matter what is. Here's a challenge We can make a video It doesn't matter what bott bracket it is or what bearing I can make a spin fast and how I'm going to do it is I'm going to take the seals out and I'm going to take all the grease out and then it'll spin incredibly fast. Meaning if it's spinning really fast, there's only two reasons doesn't have enough grease in it or the seals aren't touching properly So it's not seeiling properly. Whyy the way it's bad If there's less friction without grease, why do I need the grease? There's no grease in there and ass metal and metal it's going to wear out get damaged, generally if it's a chromium steel bearing I' not going to go in death and barriers, because please don't I'm I could go for hours. And secondly If is not sealed Uh, Yes, you could spein fast and be fine on your one dry ride, but the next day when it rains. All the little grease that' left in there is gone again. So you know, it's not a good thing. So essentially what you're saying is no Greece or insufficient Greece means bearings will wear Isn't there a thing though about people saying yeah, but it's ceramic and ceramic doesn't wear or something or other? No, Well, generally speaking, ceramic into a chromium steel bearing it will wear bowl will be hoter on the rice and cut into it There's exceptions like XD fifteen which are know endeura Bearings makes, but a few other bras Camping knowol as Colt bearings is a very good example of this. They run their bottom brackets on oil because the surface it's not that it's harder, but it's more Wear resistant, they w't weigh each other out case it' will work quite well, but it can you get ceramic balls with a ceramic race? No So you can but it won't work Sicide. So a ceramic BB is always ceramic Balls with a steel race A type of metal, yes, or a different type of st stainless steel, chromium steel or nitrogen infused steel. And you're saying that that will still wear because the race will wear rather than the balls. If it's chromium steel or stained normal stainless steel, if it's nitrogen infused stainless steel, it should not wear really is a briving geek it's just Okay, so the high level of it is just the high level of it it the mking. Generally speaking, if you had a bike, so to get back to the base point is if you take your bike and you spin your cranks and they just go incredibly fast or wheel bearings They're generally worn out. Right. And they need servicing. Get your bike to a bike shop. That's not a good thing. You're not riding faster. It's just yeah. Yeah fine. It's worn out Last as well is listen to your bike. Generally speaking, you can hear noises. You spin your cranks spin your wheel and it makes a Sounds like a metal or metal noise Your bike needs a service Second last one, A lot of bike shops these day and it's a good for a good reason specialize in certain areas, whether there's mountain bikes or road bikes or gravel bikes sometimes a bit of a crossover That just means That's what they optimize for. So if you take your bike into a shop and they turn your way because they don't like you. it's just sometimes not what they work on and be aware of that. And they're not the right person help the right person. And it's got to do multitude of things, specialist tools, mechanics can focus more in a set area. U sppace and p at their stock. So people aren't aware of this, but let's say I get a mountain bike in and I need a special mounts and bike specific part In some cases, I can pay up to fifteen pounds shipping just to get that one part to the shop if it's not with one of our regular supplies So is the customer going to pay that U and that could be on a two two pound park doesn't have to be on something expensive. so be understanding. It's the same as going to a sushi restaurant and trying to order mistake I mean, it's yes, you can get one, but it's just not what you want to be doing? Fair enough. And the last one is be honest with the bike shop You know how to go yourself or your mates had to go justust tell them rather than afterwards finding out it's just not, yeah, they'm not going to get upset with you. It's just so they know where the at and what's been done So what's an example of that? So if someone's attempted to bleed the brakes themselves and it hasn't worked. And it might be because they've done something completely wrong, you'd rather know because then you go right, okay, I'm resetting rather than try to find an issue. So a good example of that is newew bikes needs a six week service And generally speaking with mechanical bikes back in the day six bk service comes in, you know the cables are going to be stretched slightly and you need to tighten the like is So all as a bike mechanic you would have to do is just turn the barrel adjuster a turn or two where if you've Had your mate stick your screwdrivers into the mech do all these things and already as a bike shop w know, okay, well, it's point just trying to do that just startart again, loos in the cable tightenet, reset all the limit scres Let start from the beginning So yeah, it's just kind of makes everything a bit easier. We've yeah, that's it's I can tell you horror stories over the years, but yeah, a good bike shop will keep a record of everything's done with your bike So and another notice if you come in and says, odd was It was in two weeks ago. They will remember if it was three, four, five, six months ago. Anther aspect that I've seen as well, which is a bit of a tangent is A lot of people know they start cycling and they don't ride much. And then all of a sudden the next year the cycling bug bites and they start doing ten times the mileage And then they come and complain to the shop saying My bike's not lasting because the new bike I've bought isn't as durable. So though you'iding you're riding ten tes more than what you did last year, it's not that it's not lasting. it's just You're doing more to it. Y. or you're riding more on the rainway in the past you wouldn't have Yeah, it's be realistic Okay we're gonna to finish off with some listeners takeover. This one is from John who says Hello, mechanic Nick I' broken the Rar Campagolo Ecar derilleur on my gravel bike four times in the last five years I ride a lot of woodland trails and there are always branches on the ground. Every time a branch got caught in it and the derailleur itself broke, not the hanger. Is this normal Is it an ER design problem because the derailleur has so many openings, or does this just happen often on off road bikes? And is there anything I can do to protect it? At this rate I could never buy an expensive electronic group set and even long bike packing tours have started to feel a bit risky Also, Is there a way to convert the chain into a temporary single speed setup after a derailleur failure so that I can at least pedal home? Wow way. I've never snapped a mech before Yes, but have you broken mech hanger No You're not beholding, you never did off road or gravel riding until you got electronic group sets. That's the answer. Unfortunately, I don't think this is a Camanota a carar problem. I think mean, I don't know which bike he's got, but the first thing I look into is he's Mech hanger Mack hangers are designed to fail on purpose. That's what they're there for. protect your your re derailleur so that you hit something it bends and then the hanger snaps off and that saves your derailleur in an ideal world, you just put a new spare hanger on your back back on that and off you go. Some companies are making really robust neck hangers And that's the problem because the mech hanger is supposed to snap but it doesn't break because the mech hanger is too strong Right? Okay. so you made it stronger than the actual So you're saying if if the deraille is breaking not the hanger, then actually investigate whether the hanger is too strong. Yeahight. And the design because you can design a hanger to be really strong, arguably stronger than the mech There's a balancing act with this because the problem is So I used to say, I'm going to use Scott. I always say Francces' Bikeax' hangers are made out of cheese because they were bending really easily otects the max Yeah, which is not a bad thing. It just means that you need to look after your bike a bit more downside is with some of the really bulky electronic gravel and mountain likeike mech are bringing out. They're really heavy on the hangers and strong motors so that if your hanger is too soft It could just bend with time as you're shifting gears So they've made the hangers more robust. then those mechs have devices built into them. So SrAam and Shimano, for instance, on their mountain bike and gravel stuff, you can just kick the mechs. And or just disengage yourself and then reengage itself protected, but the mechanical stuff like ER and the older GRX doesn't have that. Right. So if it's then on a stronger hanger, it would just but clean off So I'm not saying this is definitely what the problem is It was quite a call Single speed fix for getting home. You did this once, didn't you Oh no, you just fixed your chain. No You got to start chain and then just fixed it. I carry a sped link. Yeah, but you don't carry a speed aerillila So you don't know that. So what's the fix? is There is a point you would have got carried. This is not to be ideal, but just so you can ride your bike is yes, just run your chain over the cassette You can try it in the middle of the cassette to start off with and over one of your chain rings, I would ideally say The smaller one Um, and then just fixure chain to be. as short as you possibly can for that distance and then ride it There is in some instances based on chain line where your chain can then slip down the cassette. I chain with out of hanger case of trial and error but at this point, you're not eracing anything. you're just trying to get home. Yeah, I'm assuming that because of chainline it will kind of force it somewhere onto the cassette. So what I have seen in the past is This is a weird one. You can have an instance where if you put your chain to the closest link that it can get it's got quite a bit of slacks too loose um ack you can do, which I don't advise for long term but just to get home is they to putut it onto that And then try and turn your pedals while using your fingers to slightly push the train up u intonto the bigger one and that'll tight the nle up for you With old school fixies and fixed gar bikes, you can adjust a rear wheel to gets the chain tension, but you can't do that with a derailleurt bike generally. So yeah Thank you very much
