Did George Russell slam Verstappen exit route shut in Austria? — Jun 29, 2026 — starts at 0:00
This is a global production. Statement win for George Russell, if we just recap on the Lewis Max battle, Did Max Pitt at the wrong time were witnessing a slightly off form Charles Lecler. They looked absolutely S who you have a crystal ball? He's never going to agree to that to speed It's W, it's David. Welcome to up to speed. And it's a big week Silver Stone Week It feels It feels like this is what centers Grand Prix racing. You know what? It kind of does, doesn't it? It's like everything is sort of the lead up to Silverstone. and then once Silverstone's done, you're kind of on that downward slope towards the end of the season. and it all goes really quick. It does. and clearly towards end of the season brings jooy happiness to some. Yes. But it also is that point where if it hasn't quite worked out on the Journeysis Oilverson. teeams start turning off the tap of development, start looking to the following year all of that sort of good stuff where I suspect for Aston Martin, that happened straighta away after Melbourne. Yeah, pretty much. pretty much. David have got their big upgrade to come. We've got I guess you could call it a big upgrade this week. Two interviews to come your way. One with Avid Limblad, one with Zach Brown. They'll be coming later this week. so make sure you're subscribed, wherever you're watching, listening. and then you'll get your notification as soon as they pop up. It was a fascinating weekend at the Red Bull Ring Most importantly, statement win for George Russell Only a second of the year, can you believe it? felt He came into it into the season with so much kind of promise, so much potential. Th then Kimmy went on that run. And it completely sort of dislodged itself in my head that he hadn't won more than one Grand Prix coming into Austria. Yeah, I guess with the Mercedes machine being so successful, Anet' been erace since Kimi obviously w you know after the Euphoria of Lou is winning in Barcelona then yeah, it is surprising. he's not had more success and he's definitely had Bad runner ofuck as well. He's been unfortunate But he ticked all the boxes at the weekend. He knew the rules. I guess we're going to talk We will get onto that. Yeah, very much soir. So he knew the rules. It looked like in the Grand Prix, a bit like in Barcelona that he was, you know, hot out of the traps and then fading towards the end of the st run. Yeah But luckily for him and out of position Kimi A Tanelli who was beating himself up because he was still angry at the start apparently and that's why he ran way at turn one and that's why he ran way at turn three Crucially, that put him back a few seconds that you had to then find later in the race. And George did enough. So well deserved victory brings that championship battle. He's now back into second. Y, forty points behind. Sounds like a lot, but it's not, it's not not at this stage of the season. No. and also we know Mercedes have been little bit questionable on the reliability. And then we had Carlo Signs in the Williams, which has a Mercedes engine in the back basically launch itself on the start finish, R, you know how our commentary bes look down across the circuit over to the pit lane, which is actually a brilliant l to watch But as they wheeled that car through into the pit lane, there was a big puppy puddle of oil which says That's not anlectic electronic field. Yes. that is a mechanical f. Another another one. We had a great battle between two multiple world champions Max Lewis. it was I loved it. It was just great fun Pretty fair between the two of them, great side by side wheel to wheel action at multiple sort of junctures during the race Loved that Really, really enjoyed it. Well, you've seen Lewis do all of that good stuff through his F two journey as well. Yeah as you were there working with the F two guys. We didn't really get to see much of Max until he arrived in Formula one because what was it Euro Forma three or German onene year of F three and it straight into and that just as a reminder to our listeners He he was basically headed decision. He could go with Mercedes or he could go with Red Bull And Red Bull having two teams, Toror Rossu was called at that time allowed him to become a they said, we'll drop you straight in. Yeah. and Mercedes weren't prepared to do that. So that journey began with Red Bull, which has led to four world championships. And I think that's part of the reason why Toto having missed out on that opportunity, realizing that Kimi is a great talent. rushed him through the lower formulas and put him straight into the Grand Prix car the belief that he's good enough you know to use a puy analogy. once again, he'll pee the carpet occasionally forsees you and he'll come because he's real house trainer Yeah, which if you think a year ago in Austria He te bone backs at turn three on the first lap Yeah. and then you look where he is now. he's come off the back of a flawless season. you know, that running wide at turn one and turn three. He only did it because he could. if that was at Monaco and there was metal barriers never would have gone there. So you know, I just see that as him exploring the opportunities, but otherwise the guy' being phen I just I loved watching Lewis and Max. It took me back to twenty one and the battles they had then, but you know, less on the line now. and so a little bit more measured, a little less pushing each other. But it kind of it reminded me again of those those quiet years from twenty two through to twenty five where Lewis wasn't happy in the car And you think of the battles that we had in twenty one, what could have been twenty two, twenty three, twenty four if he'd had the comfort level with the car of watching those two fight, you know, two, we now know G champions, great multiple champions, guys who who define their generations, Lewis his, Max his, seeing those two, you know, wheel to wheel It's just it's just marvelous. And I think because they probably to have that hugely, you know, Lewis may find himself in a championship battle this year, We'll get on to the difficulties that Ferrari had in Austrria this week.. but just watching two guys who really don't have much to lose at the moment who could just take that fight to each other I thought that was that was that was That was a hell of a lot of fun.. But of course, through it all, George Russell coming through as you were saying for the win It was controlled, it was composed, it was everything that I think he needed it to be. it was no stress. I could saying no stress. Maxus Maxmus c end on two stints Um For George, you know, what's that going to do? do we think for him? just in terms of kind of reigniting a championship charge, letting him know, you know I can win races. I do win races. That's what I do. Yeah. Interesting you say that as if you're putting yourself and say, Jorge your skin. We've been around this game for a long time and we can tell in the eyes of a driver, whether he's confident, whether he's defensive, whether he's relieved and there was a certain amount of relief when we spoke to George after the race. And he was actually going through that process of going You know, this was important to show that I can still do this. It was almost like he was doing a sort of self help session whilst in the interview going, George, you can still do it. amazing. Wh you know, having been there and had highs and lows in my career, you do go through those moments of doubt. Why is my teammate able to do that? and I'm not able to do that? And then you suddenly find yourself back in form and you're going, well why is he not keeping up? it goes the other way as well. So it sets us up beautifully for what is coming in a few days time. There will be question marks though, because we saw it in Barcelona when Kimmy was catching him and ultimately passed him before his own DNF here those two last stints, Max was catching him. Was that Max do we think being able to better utilize the ties orr is it a George issue that actually he's overworking them And then the second half of the stint his times are tailing off. Yeah, I think that is a good question you raise, of which we Barcelona was the first really hot race that we had. And clearly he was not able to manage the tyres or the stint for whatever reason, whether that was set up of his particular car O the way he drives Austria, there was slight indication, certainly in the first stint. There was a much bigger indication in the second stint or the final stand where y was just much quicker. Yeah. He was just much quicker than anyone at that point. So had he been at the front it would have been him disappearing off. So that's going to be worrying. Don't want to take anything away from the victory from George because he earned it especially on the Saturday. Okay, so let's look at Satday because it didn't come without its controversies. Obviously the yellow came out for Max's crash George was deemed to have lifted Enough under a yellow flag. that yellow then became a double wavave yeellllow and once it's a double wave yellow, all qualifying attempts are Nullified, you can't you can't improve at all u under a double waved yellow George was cognizant to the fact it was a single yellow. His interviews afterwards were like, well, you can see the diagonal flipping. like that's what it means. There's that awareness to George, isn't there? Like he knows the rules inside out And to have that awareness at that speed on a full maximum commitment push lap that he needed to take the poll from the two Ferraris.. Just brilliant awareness. It was and it'd be worrying this far into his career if he didn't know be rule and regulation. And it remind us of you know Vettel when he was in his career. winning World Championships, he was overtaking people in pit lane and things like that in the area where he knew it was allowed. Yeah He just knew the rules and exploited the rules and the Gs, I think, do that. So that puts George in that great awareness category Uh The big question, of course was when you have a car that far embedded in the tyres at a high speed corner When would it ever not be a? I think it took about fifteen seconds between the accident, Kimi going through and lifting more because I guess He felt it was doing the right thing. maybe wasn't quite sure did I see a double yellow The drivers will have in their cockpit a blue light, a yellow light, a red light, but As I sit here, I don't believe it kind of flashes to tell them it's a double yellow I may be wrong, but let me do some research on that after the show. But George, I think it was a case of If you got a penalty then it just sort of compounds what's been a difficult season. If he didn't He gets poor position. Yeah. and He didn't He didn't get penalized and he got poor positition. He did ultimately what was right per the regulations, right? He showed he'd lifted. The track evolution was such that even with the lift, he still improved U and was enough to take him toall There's a moral. question though, that extends beyond did he do the right thing which is are the rules around yellow flags in a qualifying session Are they fit for purpose? Because you've got a driver who stuffed it and is, as you said, in the barrier at one of the fastest points of the track At what point is it okay to literally just like show you've lifted and scream on through Yeah, if you then screw up in the in the same way and I hate to bring up, but, you know, I roll back to We're going back over a decade, but I roll back to Gil Biankque, you know, Jul's accident happened under yellow because he was pushing to make up the delta time under yellow, which was allowed at the time because virtual saafety card didn't exist back then and we were robbed of a great talent who was doing what was allowable within the regulations But is that right? shouldhould that be allowable under the regulations? Because the first thing you're taught When you go to your local cart track, right? the first time you ever sit in a go cart and you get the video with Martin Brundle telling you the rules and the regulations of the cart track Um You see a yellow? back off, right? And now it's like if it's a double waved yellow, then you have to slow and be prepared to stop. But you're always taught from when you're a kid, you see a yellow Back out. Yeah. and is is a simple lift and back on. Is this enough? and And I don't know if I have answ for that. Like's it's a moral far deeper consideration. The r drivers The competitive animals they are Someone else's failure is your opportunity. So no one wants to see someone get hurt But if somebody blows up or somebody crashes out then that's advantage for you. and it's just the way of the world. and if maybe not the way of the world, but like in boxing, you're not punching them in the face just to score points, you're punching them in the face to put them down. And so there there's a sort of gladiatorial element of that in the race car. What George absolutely wouldn't know is who'd gone off, unless he' even told on the radio And whether they were stuck in the gravel or they'd hit the barrier, We've got the benefit of seeing it all. That corner, as you know The approach is it's slightly over a brow. Yeah and you don't see the apex of the corner until you arrive at the corner. So he had no idea who was off, where they were. If it's a single yellow, that would suggest that it could be a minor incident. Double yellow tells you that's it, the laps off. So it really comes back to the restdirector I think when they look at that again And life's about learnings. Yeah, they will not wait fifteen seconds. If a car goes into a tire barrier at high speed. It's not going anywhere in a blind part of the track Yeah as well. because he could have been if it' a if it's a yellow and you come over that brow They might be slow on track. they might be, you know, two wheels in the gravel, two wheels still on the curb and you fly through there and it's under a single yellow. I don't know. it's an impossible thing to answer. I'm just I think no, I think they will change it for the future. because there's enough evidence to suggest that it was in such a gray area that it benefited some And it was disadvantaging to us. Do you think they they'd ever get to the extent of sort of Americanizing it and just going as soon as anyone goes off during qualifying full course yellow, noobbody improves because that tells everybody It's done back out we're done. Aguably that would be the fairst thing There will be certainly circumstances, given that we race in know American footballs in a football stadium, like we go to spa. it's you know, square kilometers of racetack. It would seem a Yeah if someone crashes at Au Rouge, is it fair to penalize somebody who's already down at Blanchemont? Yeah. So I think the answer to that would be no. Yeah. That's fair But he took advantage of it U absolutely the right thing within the regulations, held his nerve, knew the rules and then delivered a brilliant win from pole position. as you said, forty points the gap at the top. Absolutely meega. Not the weekend for Ferrari after a brilliant victory, brilliant strategy led victory at Barcelona all fell apart for them in Austria. it's fascinating because we've talked all season about how good the Ferraris are on low speed corners All weekend, but particularly in the race, they looked absolutely turd coming out of three like out of three theread nothing. Yeah struggling for that. There's a male ofation change there. so it's it's some Yeah you rise up and it it's like vertical into downhill. it's So I think possibly that was giving them some issues, it's a really tricky callaton for you to power off because of the fact that You know, the card just doesn't sit flat as you rise up over through the apex differenterent the compound of tyres had shifted. So we always have the soft medium and hard by name, but they're different physical compounds track to track What you would see is track temperature was very similar to Barcelona, but maybe that tire Tyers didn't really work for from. Lewis has said that it's never really been a great circuit for him. whichich is amazing for the guy that's redefined the history books and victories and equaled the championships. And I know that's another debate that will forever rage on For as long as Max has been racing though it's bogy track for everybody because Max has just been so good. He's been so strong. Yeah, absolutely. But yeah, Feri, a little bit on But let's before we got to the race suuddenly in qualifying, it look like could it really been a one too. Yeah, the track ramped up right at the end. But what we know of course is the would have been beaten in the grand Prix when the longevity on the towers just wasn't there. So So the strategy That was out of necessity, right? It wasn't a we're trying to do something smart here and beat everybody. It was literally our tyres are going to drop off a cliff. Yeah. And you see that Lewis was sort of driving that from from the cockpit. he said in his interview afterwards the team wanted to do two. I was like, no We need to do three and that was the best option for him. Charles was maybe a little bit more on the fence on that and then it put him into a sort of no man's land. I think actually for me, the story of Ferrari still overall it's positive because they're back in a sort of competitive space But I think the big question mark there now, and would just have to deal with the data and the factaxes We're we're witnessing a slightly off form Charles Leclerc probably for the first time in his career. Yeah. that' f Yeah. He's always been a little bit Trash comes in qualifying from nowhere because he's pushing so hard. but otherwise he's just been a sort of consistently fast driver I don't recall him being in this sort of form before No me Kn me Is it and look, we talk about, you know, Lewis having those years where it fell off for him Is this generation of car just not A Charle lecler type car or is it something is it something simpler than that? Be it's because it's becauseuse it's not the child of And he's got a new contract in pock, right? There's no probleure Youve got every reason to be happy, happy, happy. But I am reluctant to endorse that some cars don't suit some drivers. the great level. What I've witnessed through my time watching Formula One and then being involved as a driver in Formula One and then in retirement, but still working in Formula onene Is it? E quick guys somehow find a way to drive that car. We've had so many different What do we put What do we put what do we put Lewis twenty two to twenty five down to, right? Because he didn't forget how to drive overnightointment after twenty. Right was it that much of a gut punch? Was it it didid it kick the crap out that hard that it was three four years of potentially, yeah and also he's been around for a long time. I can only speak for myself who doesn't know doesn't deserve to tie the shoelaces of Lewis Hamilton in terms of talent. I did fifteen seasons and I was I didn't fall in love with Formul onene. I was just tired. It was mentally and physical. I put everything into it. That's why I'm amazed that Lewis and Fernando turn up dririve the cars the way they do, still do the same media pens, still do the same marketing events. They're essentially answering the same question they've been doing for twenty eight years in a slightly different just the way Oddly enough it's the people asking the questions that get tired quicker Yeah quick. And so you've got the new people com in and asking the same sameame stuff they've been they've been asked for for so long. So it's amazing that they've got that sort of resilience. I think actually, I'm not a big cricket follower, but Ben Stokes apparently announced his retirement international mid match. likeike Michael the announcement came out in Monza Yeah in twenty two thousand six. Mid Grand Pri ye, Mid Grand Pri they confused everybody. Like I think it confused Michael. I don't think he I don't think he knew he was retiring until he was told after the races to be fair to him Yeah, Mad, that, isn't it? Yeah. But anyway, Charles. Charles. Yeah, it's a weird one It's a really weird one. You know also was weird when I was doing the top three interviews. The changes around sometometimes you're just doing one individual driver at a time and you deal with them and they wander off This particular one, it was three drivers all lined up and they're given a nice little circle and they're encouraged to stand in front of that circle. and I'm encouraged to keep them in front of that circle And um I think midway through the first part with George, Kimi kind of wandered off to do something, wandered back. I'm not sure if that was a shot. But I'm there watching that and trying to listen to George's answer so you know I can pick up in a relevant second and then go through the next phase of questioning and then come to George for the final question. And at that point, my accent and Kimy just wandered off. It was like being decided, Well, we've heard enough. Yeah, that's it, done. done. We haven't really talked about Kimy brrings home another podium bit wild in the opening laps and obviously he got that post race penalty in Barcelona for running off track a few too many times Ran off track a few too many times in the opening lapse. without that If he'd kept it within the lines if he hadn't have left himself open to get past Does his race start to look Very different. Given the p showed at the end, you think you would have won? Yeah, absolutely. one hundred percent. he was the fastest car over the Grand Priit distance. Interesting. And if you take out those mistakes, that would have put him in front. and overtaking was possible as we witnessed he was before we went into the driver interviews, I was just standing there talking and he's so enthusiastic and he's so open and he's great. There's no question about it and he's going to me e I was driving angry. I was driving angry. And I said, why? And he said because of my mistake in qualifying with the yellow flags and I was like, Oh, wow, okay, it's amazing you carried that over. Yeah, yeah yeah. it was amazing and wonderful that he was just open to kind of share that moment with me And I was like, well, it kind of worked out after that, didn't it? You' the quickest guy at the end of Gnd Prix and he's going, Yeahah, I was the quickest guy. was I was seriously on it.. So he knows what he's got in his fingertips kind of get the feeling like Kimmy Kimy is so fluid and so fast. it feels like Silverston's going to be a very Kimmy circuit. Yeah, it's going to be interesting. Certainly on the evidence of what we saw in Barcelona and Austria Boy boy was fast The big dream, of course is that we'll have a fast You know, a fast Lewis and a fast Max and not taking away from the other drivers there, but George, you know, Lando's got a grandstand with a George was amaz fans The fans want to fast George, a fast Lando and a fast Louis to be fighting for the win down there But actually one thing I love about the British Fans is there'll be people there in their numbers with cadillac shirts and h shirts. Aston Martin shirs, teams that are not particularly strong right now. Well A are doing good solid job, but you know, Cadillac in the first year. Cadillac a bast thats over. Yeah, abbsolutely. Aston Martin. Yes as well. So they'll be able to develop the car and bring bits over. Poor old Cadillac, neither the car even saw the fifth Lap. Um Desperately, desperately disappointing. Wekend disappointing Wekend for Colton Hurter and F two as well, much to be done, much to learn, much to change at Cadillac going forward. Right. Cing up We are going to talk more about Max Verstappen's race and his Red Bull future as F one's silly season ramped up again this weekend. What do you think about Russell's race in Austria? What it means for him and what it means for Silverson, As always, our socials at up to spepeed show, subscribe Give us a follow and let us know your thoughts It just happened Y in Austria at the rebel Ring. Yes. A lot of upgrades car. like he was you know able to exploit potential. after ali Even with the crash, I was going, well, look, that was qualifying, Max is awesome at that. But looking at where Hadger was, it was like, hmm, okay, maybe this upgrade It's a step forward. and I think what we've got confirmed in the Grand Pri years, it was definitely better. Yeah I did talk about managing some break issues And I think this seems to be a sort of common thread across the teams because of break by wire, because of the amount of energy they're harvesting and then having to deploy It was a little bit more evident in Austria than we'd seen maybe in the last few races. fair. That sounds fair. I think It's interesting hearing Toto at Mercedes being wary of the number of upgrades that Ferrari and Red Bull have put on their cars and being like, how are they doing this under the under the budget cap And perhaps Toto's finance department needs a bit of work if they're not able to put on the same number of upgrades as Red Bull and Ferrari have thus or maybe Redbull and Ferrari are going to run out of money and steam three quarters of the way through the year. but Um Friday didn't look great for Red Bull, then from what we're hearing, a massive stint from Sebastian Buemi who's there, Sim driver, obviously races in Fmula E, former F one driver himself massive S sh overnight on Friday kind of ironed out the creases so that when they went into Saturday That upgrade package was firing. And they've got to be feeling positive, I think, coming out of that race on any other day Max might have won it. You know, I think you've got Max and you've got Kimmy as two drivers who will leave Austria with equal parts frustration. in not winning the race, but huge positivity with the knowledge that they carry from it that they absolutely could have done Did Max Pit at the wrong time? Did he stay out too late, you know, before he took that final stop. Hsight Hindsight's always twenty, right? Given how quick he was catching George in the second half of those stints, given what we know now from Barcelona and from Austria about George seemingly struggling in the second half of stance Maybe those extra, what was it five laps? Yeah. Maybe it was too much. Maybe it was too much. Yeah I think because it was ten it was within a second of him and then after those five laps, he's ten back. Yeah. and then there was a virtual safety c as well. I guess the rolling off the dice was if you did stay it a bit longer. Yes, you gave yourself fresh retires at the end. If you stay it out a bit longer and there was a safety car and you got a pit stop or a versus safety car, then you know yourre quid's in. So they've never been scared of being brave when it comes to strategy overall and certainly talking with the team after the Grand Prix There's a positivity there. The new power train is working The new upgrade is working. All of the rebel owned cars finished in the top ten, which is a major achievement as well. bothoth Limblad and Lawson had very strong races, you know, not seen by the front runners. because there' there's definitely a two tier three tier formula one, but yes T t you that they theyve back, you know, they The Red Bull, the Ferrari, the McLaren, the Mercedes there a good half a second pretty much quicker than the next group of people Then You got to look at, as you said, racing bls, another race in which both drivers scored points. B of the rest at the moment, that team absolutely superb Alpin not in the points. But I think what is it full races in a row now for them with both drivers in the points, which is their longest streak as What are we calling them this year? Racing buulls RB, V cararb, whatever, whatever we're calling them. Yeah, it's their longest longest run. Tora Rossso Longest run of both drivers in the point. So good stuff from them. But yeah, what might have been for Max, hadad that strategy played out a little bit differently? Had they stopped a little bit earlier? wouldould have been great to see But still, the talk about Max to talk about his future. U It came to the fore once again going well. Where's he going? Silverstone. likeike know I know you have a crystal ball that you I'm like I'll quote Seb. I've got balls, but none of them are crystal. Yeah, I I I get it, right? so there's this Reportedly there's a clause in his contract that if he isn't second in the championship by some given point in time that we're not sure what it is, then he has the ability to leave the team and doesn't have to tell the team until like a month later or something.ith either way, right? Where's he going to go And that's my big question right now is like if there was a space at Ferrari, Mercedes, even McLaren I think that the silly season chat would be stronger. And certainly when I look back over the last few years and there was the rumors of Mercedes are talking to Max and blah. You could you could see there was There was purpose, there was possibility. It'surarry have got Lewis and Chhl signed up they've just signed Charl onto a new contract. McLaren is super happy with Oscar Andlando Mercedes George is locked in for the next couple of years, they're definitely not getting rid of Kimmy So where's Where's the opening? And honestly, right now, if it isn't Mercedes Why would you go? Be I't I don't really understand where he'd wish to be other than Red Bull. Yeah,'t I said this before in a previous part, I don't see him going anywhere because I don't see a natural fit for where he is in his career, his needs the way he likes to work, I think Rebul is the perfect fit for him in that respect. So the only thing if he felt he needed a recharge would be to take a sabbatical and then come back as and when it suits them, but you know, we will find out in time. I mean, if If you're a Mercedes, if you're a McLaren And Mac suddenly becomes available. Are you going to make space like, if you're McCLaren, do you have to weigh up Do we need to rid of Oscar? becausecause we're not going to get rid of Lano because he's a running worldorld champion Do we drop Oscar and bring Max in? If you're Mercedes, do you drop George and bring in him in, I I think any of these teams would would react to that. I think they would do whatever they can to get Max in the car because they know what he brings, which is absolute commitment behind the wheel. And I'm not taking anything away from Lando Oscar Charles George Kimy who clearly do that as well But we have to acknowledge sort of super humuman performances. Max is m Max Max. So I do believe that you spend millions developing the fastest race car So of course you would spend millions to have the fastest driver abbsolutely be behind the wheel. whether they get that option or not is is the other question. And as I've said before, I think it's it's unlikely. Others would get that option if they had to offer him the same contract in terms of doing marketing and media and all of the things that Max is not going to like a McLaren contract because he's going to have to times by ten the amount of marketing um, you know, appearances and filming days and stuff that he hates doing He's never going to agree to that ver ever U also Solov the Red Bull junior. in the lead up to Austria, it was announced somewhere on some website that he has a seat at racing Bulls for next year. Racing Bulls very quick to pull back from that and say we haven't decided anything for next year I don't know why they would drop either driver at the moment because I think Lawson's doing a stellar job, Lindblad As a Rokie, I think is doing a stellar job. We've just said, the number of races in a row now that they've scored points with both drivers We're not in the helmet Marco era anymore don't have to keep this thing on a constant rotation with those young drivers I don't know why you would drop Lawson or Ly Blad right now. I think they're both doing brilliantobs. I agree. Credit where it's due because yes, we do criticize when somebody is not performing. and how do we judge whether they're performing? Well, we do it relative to the teammate Right now, Lawson' doing exactly what you'd expect and sort of laying down the lap times for Limblad to show how good he is and being right there But that's the order you would expect them to be finishing. The more experienced one and the younger driver who's showing that he's got all of the minerals to be in Formula one. So yeah, they are a very strong team right now. When you look outside the top four teams For me, there's Lawson Lyn Blad Gasley Probably the three best drivers outside those top four teams. I don't know why anybody would be looking at replacing any one of those three because for me personally, I think they're doing I think they're doing a stellar job. Yeah I concur Awesome. Well, that was easy. When we talk about Red Bull drivers though, maybe not so much the young drivers, DC, but those let's say experperienced. you got to take part in the Red Bull Legends parade. I know you're feeling it Oh yeah, my lower backsone So I've got a little heap pad on as we sit here. That's the aging process and also I don't train like a Grand Prix driver. Oh, here's the thing. I don't train. And also they didn't give you a seat. Yeah, I was on a sitting on a What do you call it a tyre blanket? I love it. I love this. notot even a cushion. They gave him a tyre blanket.as it W it heated up at the time? Nfly not that that might have It sort of eased the back pain if you had. But what a privilege. It was RB six, Sebastian Vetel, Mark Weber red that car, Vetel won the worldor Championship with that car. Rubens's Maricello was out in and I saw you guys catching up. a nice hu? Yeah, that was that was great. C Rub Hows Rubens doing? He's doing great. He's still racing in Brazil. Yeah he is. We first raced against each other in nineteen ninety. What back in F three? No, Ool lototus. No. Yeahah, right Right from pre forula fe. So O those kind of formula four Yeah that time And my first teammate, Jiles de Feron, who sadly is no longer with us, but I remember the first time I met Rubens, Gilles was the translator between the two one of didn't speak English at that time and my Brazilian has not improved at all since then. But he clearly does speak English now. But we we had a brilliant moment where we were just kind of looking at each other reminiscing on Racing against each other in the early nineties, pre formula one, seeing how our journey of life has gone, his son's racing. Of course in the support series, my son was racing at the weekend at Donnington, had a win, thanks for asking, had a second, thanks for asking in one of the other races. I was not aware that he was racing this weekend. Congratulations. That's alost in the third race, unfortunately Exactly. So that was nice. So we're all kind of in that next generational phase of our life. but to be I always kind of feel a bitbarrassed when they say leegends because I definitely am not a legend. I'm a legend. I was a grandrie driver who won Grand Pries. But for me legends are the ones that have won world Championships and have become iconic with the sport There was a number I think you're doing yourself down. Well, I'm not looking for the sort of Anybody like people could put it in the comments here like anyybody who thinks that you are not a legend. I again. A legend of a legend of this sport mate. They don' they don't know which sidess up. I wish had longevity. I've been around a long time. But anyway, it was a beautiful example of six wheel Tyrells. There was a Brabam fan car which was AC, Mark Weber was in a Braham who he basically didn't fit in the car. You know he sort of tiny little geariver down beside his leg. But it was great to see the crowd young and old and everything in between loving seeing the history of Formula O and that's kind of heartwarming. U so let's let's just, you know, put that down as one of those wonderful weekend experiences. You get to do these parades and they're awesome I still would love to see a return of a leegends race. So back in like it only need to be five laps. I't thinking it was going to fitness this to do more. Was it W was it back in the eighties or nineties when they used to be the BMWs. Yeah the pro cars. The pro cars, rightight? And you would goac cllown. Yeah, and you'd get the legends of the sport would jump in and go and have like a ten lap race. I think it'd be awesome to get you and Rubens and Jean Laci and Webber and everybody together in a one make, you know, make it, make it road cars, make whatever it needs to be Get you guys out on track for ten laps on five, six weekends a year. and just go and have fun. Would you be up for that? The idea or is the racing bug gone? Yeah, the idea is lovely, but For me, the fire is out and fulfilled in the journey that I had. So to do anything just for fun is, I think taking away from what the fans pay to see they pay to see commitment They pay to see professionalism And that, therefore is not where I think You know, over that you've got the from the threeree guys. their future depends on every lap they do. the forula two guys. they're so close to Formula one, they can smell it, they can touch it And then you got the formula one guys who are, you know, they've earned the right and they're there because they're the best that's currently available and has the experience. So I don't think that we need a playday for old guys at a Grand P weekend. We should reminisce. We should bring them on the podcast and sit around and talk about our best crashes or our best races. But I don't know, do you think there wouldd be a hunger between any of your anyy of your other legendary mates? Of course there would. do. There would be. It was interesting then just to wrap on this Rubens and I had a chat before. so he's in the V ten Ferrari I' in the V eight Red Bull and I was like, look, I'm going to be flat on all the streets, but I'm going to be breking at one hundred fifty. Yeah Well maybe not two hundred fifty, but you know only break at one ten rather than ninety, which you know it's all prettyd late breaking there Just so you know if you're behind me. You're not going to get surpris. I said it'd be quite nice if we probably did a little bit of swapping around on the street and gave people a shot, gave people a shot So we do the parade, we do a sort of rolling start with everybody in all these old beautiful cars. And of course, the cars from the seventies are way way slower than the cars we We go through the first corner, we accelerate up to turn three and the V two has more torque and more power and it starts to pull away. Rubens, did he slow down and let me overtake him at the next thing? He buggery. He He's a racing driver. rac in the whatever they call it in Brazian touring cars, Touring cars.. So I'm retired and therefore wanting to have some fun. You want to win. No. So that's why we shouldn't do it because ye We're in a different main too. Oh mate, I imagine the repair bill would be extortionate as well.
