Castamatic is one of the most complete Podcasting 2.0 clients on iOS, quietly built by an independent developer (Gunp Media Productions) since 2015. If the words "Podping" or "value-for-value" mean anything to you, Castamatic implements them.

Origins

Castamatic launched in 2015 as a niche power-user iOS podcast app and has been steadily shipping updates for a decade. It's never had a viral moment or been the app the tech press writes about, but it's the one specific listeners recommend when they want everything Podcasting 2.0 has spec'd out working on their phone.

What makes it distinctive

Castamatic supports the modern podcasting stack about as thoroughly as any iOS app on the market. Chapters, transcripts, cross-app comments via podcast:socialInteract, guest bios via podcast:person, and Lightning-based value-for-value payments to hosts and contributors all work here. Podping support means new episodes appear in seconds via a decentralised signal rather than waiting for a normal feed poll, and live-podcast notifications tell you when a show goes live without switching apps.

The April 2026 release ("Castamatic 13") added Magic Transcript and Magic Chapters, generated on-device using Apple Intelligence, so private and membership-only shows can be transcribed without sending any audio to a cloud model. That capability sits alongside the Podcasting 2.0 spec transcript support, so if a publisher ships a transcript in the feed it uses that; otherwise it makes one locally.

Where you get it

iOS App Store, free to try, with a paid unlock for the full feature set. iOS only.

Current stance

Actively developed by a small independent team, and the Podcasting 2.0 support has been landing steadily since the spec started to solidify. If you're on iPhone and you want maximum Podcasting 2.0 coverage in a single app, Castamatic is the pick. Its natural comparison is Podverse, which is cross-platform and open source but has fewer iOS-specific polish beats. Both are legitimate choices.
