How to sync podcasts across all your devices

You're halfway through an episode on your phone. You get home and want to pick up on your tablet. Or you listen at your desk during work and switch to your phone for the commute. Without sync, you're scrubbing through audio trying to find your spot. With it, playback picks up exactly where you left off.

Most podcast apps support some form of cross-device sync, but the quality varies wildly. Some sync everything instantly. Others sync subscriptions but not playback position. A few don't sync at all. Here's how to set it up in every major app and what to do when it breaks.

TL;DR

  • Apple Podcasts syncs via iCloud across all Apple devices automatically
  • Pocket Casts has the best cross-platform sync (iOS, Android, web)
  • Spotify syncs everywhere but lacks podcast-specific features
  • Overcast syncs across iPhones and iPads only (no Android or web)
  • Most sync issues are caused by being signed into different accounts or having sync toggled off
  • OPML export lets you transfer subscriptions between apps that don't sync with each other

What actually syncs (and what doesn't)

Not all sync is equal. Here's what each level covers:

Full sync includes subscriptions, playback position (down to the second), queue order, episode status (played/unplayed), and download preferences. Pocket Casts and Spotify offer this across platforms.

Partial sync covers subscriptions and playback position but may skip queue order, star ratings, or custom playlist filters. Apple Podcasts falls here; it syncs well within the Apple ecosystem but can't reach Android or web browsers.

No sync means each device is an island. Some smaller indie apps and older apps don't sync at all. If you use one of these, OPML export is your backup plan.

How to set up sync in each app

Apple Podcasts

Apple Podcasts syncs automatically through iCloud. To verify it's enabled:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad
  2. Tap your name at the top, then iCloud
  3. Scroll down and make sure Podcasts is toggled on
  4. Repeat on every Apple device you use

On Mac, open the Podcasts app, go to Podcasts > Settings > General, and confirm "Sync Library" is checked.

What syncs: Subscriptions, playback position, played/unplayed status, and show settings. Downloads don't sync; each device manages its own storage.

Limitation: Apple devices only. No Android, no web player, no Windows app.

Pocket Casts

Pocket Casts is the strongest option for multi-platform sync. Create a free account at pocketcasts.com, then sign in on every device.

  1. Open Pocket Casts on your phone
  2. Go to Profile and sign in (or create an account)
  3. Sign into the same account on your other devices (iOS, Android, or web at pocketcasts.com)

Sync happens automatically in the background. If something seems out of date, pull down on the podcast list to force a refresh.

What syncs: Subscriptions, playback position, queue, filters, up next, played status, and starred episodes. With Pocket Casts Plus, you also get desktop apps and cloud file storage.

Limitation: Some filter settings require Pocket Casts Plus ($4/month). Free tier covers the essentials.

Spotify

Spotify syncs podcast progress alongside music. If you're already signed in on multiple devices, podcast sync works out of the box.

  1. Sign into the same Spotify account on all devices
  2. Play a podcast episode on one device
  3. Open Spotify on another device; it should show your last position

What syncs: Subscriptions (followed shows), playback position, and your episode queue. Spotify also syncs listening history across devices.

Limitation: Podcast-specific features are limited compared to dedicated apps. No smart playlists, no per-show playback settings, and no OPML export if you decide to leave.

Overcast

Overcast syncs via its own servers across iOS devices.

  1. Open Overcast and create an account (or sign in)
  2. Sign into the same account on your other iPhone or iPad

What syncs: Subscriptions, playback position, playlists, and episode status.

Limitation: iPhone and iPad only. No Android app, no web player, and no Mac app. If you listen on both iOS and Android, Overcast can't bridge that gap.

Podtastic

Podtastic syncs your subscription list and playback progress across iOS and Android through your Podtastic account.

  1. Sign in with the same account on each device
  2. Your podcast library and episode states sync automatically

What syncs: Subscriptions, episode status, and playback position. Downloads are managed per-device since storage varies.

Troubleshooting common sync problems

When sync stops working, these are the usual culprits.

Different accounts. The most common issue. If you're signed into iCloud with one Apple ID on your phone and a different one on your iPad, podcasts won't sync. Same goes for Pocket Casts, Spotify, and every other app. Check that you're using the same account everywhere.

Sync toggled off. iOS lets you disable iCloud sync per app. If podcasts stop syncing after an iOS update, check Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Podcasts and make sure it's on.

Stale cache. Sometimes an app caches an old playback position. Force-close the app on both devices, reopen, and wait 30 seconds. Most apps re-sync on launch.

Slow propagation. Cloud sync isn't instant. After pausing on one device, give it 10-20 seconds before expecting the other device to catch up. Wi-Fi is faster than cellular for sync.

Conflicting downloads. If you download an episode on your phone and your tablet, each device keeps its own copy. This is normal. Downloads are device-specific because storage capacity varies.

Moving between apps with OPML

If your current app doesn't sync where you need it, you can transfer subscriptions using OPML, a standard file format that stores your podcast list.

To export: Most apps have an "Export OPML" or "Export Subscriptions" option in settings. This creates a file listing every podcast you subscribe to.

To import: Open your new app, find the "Import" option in settings, and select the OPML file. Your subscriptions transfer over. Playback progress, queue, and episode status won't transfer, but at least your shows are there.

Apps that support OPML: Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, Castro, Apple Podcasts (via Mac), and Podtastic. Spotify does not support OPML export or import.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does syncing use a lot of data?

No. Podcast sync transfers tiny amounts of metadata (playback timestamps, subscription lists) over your network. It's negligible compared to streaming or downloading episodes. Audio files themselves don't sync; each device downloads or streams independently.

Can I sync between iPhone and Android?

Only with apps available on both platforms: Pocket Casts, Spotify, and Podtastic. Apple Podcasts and Overcast are iOS-only. If you carry both an iPhone and an Android device, Pocket Casts is the safest bet for seamless sync.

Why is my playback position wrong after syncing?

This usually means one device uploaded a stale position. Force-close the app on both devices, reopen on the device with the correct position first, wait for it to sync, then open on the other device. If it persists, sign out and back in to reset the sync state.

Do downloaded episodes sync between devices?

No. Downloads are device-specific in every podcast app. Each device manages its own storage and downloads independently. Your offline listening setup needs to be configured per device.
