What's New in Podtastic — April 25, 2026

This week was about the invisible stuff: the moments when an episode should keep playing after a phone call, when an app should pick up where you left off, and when downloads should just work overnight without you thinking about them. Every change below removes a tiny bit of friction from your listening.

Playback holds steady through calls and Siri

Phone calls, Siri requests, and voice assistants used to throw Podtastic into an awkward recovery dance. Sometimes playback paused and resumed correctly. Sometimes it auto-resumed during the call (which it shouldn't). Sometimes it stayed paused after the call ended.

All three scenarios now behave the way you'd expect. Podtastic pauses cleanly when something else needs your audio, stays quiet while the call is happening, and resumes the moment the call ends. The same goes for Siri announcements, navigation voice prompts, and any other app that briefly takes over your speakers.

A fresh onboarding experience

New users now see a rotating feature carousel on first launch that highlights what Podtastic actually does differently: Smart Summaries, Smart Topics, Smart Playback, and Jump Ahead. The new cards are tighter, more colorful, and better balanced on phones of every size. If you've been meaning to show a friend why they should try Podtastic, the new onboarding is the walkthrough you'd have given them in person.

Overnight processing on Android matches iOS

Android users have been asking for this for months. Podtastic on Android now processes downloaded episodes in the background, including overnight, so they're ready when you wake up. Previously, processing happened when the app was in the foreground or actively playing. Now a dedicated background worker keeps things moving even if you haven't opened the app.

You'll also get a lock-screen notification when episodes finish processing, so you know they're ready to listen. Notifications are grouped if several finish at once, so your lock screen doesn't fill up.

Better recovery when your connection wobbles

iOS and Android both handle bad networks more gracefully this week. When your Wi-Fi cuts out or your cellular signal drops, Podtastic now waits patiently and retries with sensible timing instead of failing fast. The status badge on the episode list updates in real time so you can see what's happening ("Waiting for Network," "Checking," or "Ready") rather than silently stalling.

Downloads pick back up the moment a connection returns. You don't have to reopen the app or manually retry anything.

Jump Ahead now snaps to the cleanest cut

Jump Ahead (the feature that automatically tightens gaps and pacing so episodes flow naturally) got smarter about where it trims. It now snaps to nearby topic boundaries when one is close, so transitions land on meaningful moments rather than mid-sentence. End-of-show detection is also more accurate, which keeps outros intact instead of cutting them short.

Smaller fixes

  • Fixed an issue where the player sometimes lost its position after reopening the app
  • Queue drag-reorder on Android no longer snaps back to its original position
  • Apple sign-in works reliably again on the Login and Register screens
  • The Settings screen now separates Delete Account from Sign Out under a clearly labelled "Danger Zone" section
  • Update prompts moved from a persistent banner to a one-time alert at app launch, so they don't keep interrupting you
  • Android tablets now use a cleaner two-column grid for recommendation cards
  • Billing state recovers automatically if an Android purchase gets stuck mid-verification
  • Library search filter clears correctly when you navigate to Discover
  • The "No Topics Detected" grey badge is gone; episodes show either a green Ready badge or the active processing state, never a dead-end in between

What's coming next

We're deep into improvements on Smart Topics quality across shows with long, rambling intros, plus a set of upgrades to Smart Playback that should make your queue feel more personal without any manual tweaking. Expect those landing across iOS and Android in the coming weeks.
