What's new in Podtastic — June 26, 2026
Podtastic 4.2 shipped this week. The headline change is a way to train Smart Skip with a single tap, plus a new full-swipe action in the library and proper downloads for members-only feeds.
Train Smart Skip with 👍 and 👎
Smart Jump Ahead is now called Smart Skip — same feature, new name.
Smart Skip has been doing the work for months. It watches what people skip past in episodes, learns the patterns, and gently nudges you over the bits you'd probably want to skip too. The new bit in 4.2 is on the jump banner and the detail sheet: a thumbs-up and a thumbs-down right there in the player.
Tap 👎 when the jump was wrong and Smart Skip avoids that pattern on future episodes for you. Tap 👍 when the jump was perfect and the model leans into it.
The ratings are private to your account, applied to your listening only, and you can change them later from the episode detail sheet. Over a week or two of normal listening, the model gets noticeably more tuned to what you think is filler.
If you've never used Smart Skip before, the guide to how AI is changing podcast listening in 2026 walks through the feature in context.
Full-swipe library action: pick your default
The library list now has a configurable full-swipe action. Settings → Library → Full swipe action, and you can default it to Mark as played, Archive, or Delete. Whatever you pick is what a confident left-to-right swipe does on any episode tile.
For a lot of people, "swipe to mark-played" is the move you do dozens of times a week and never want to confirm. Now you don't have to. The shorter partial-swipe still shows the full menu when you want a less common action.
We wrote up the full feature, plus the way the secondary actions behave, in our dedicated swipe-to-manage-episodes guide.
Members-only feeds: downloads, artwork, the real name
If you subscribe to a paid podcaster directly (Patreon, Apple Podcasts Subscriptions, Memberful, etc.) and you've added their members-only feed to Podtastic, 4.2 finally handles all the awkward edges:
- Downloads now hit the real members-only enclosure URL, not the public placeholder.
- The podcast's name is hydrated from the channel feed, not stuck on the generic label some hosting providers serve to logged-out listeners.
- Artwork from the members feed renders correctly.
It's an unflashy fix list, but if you pay for a podcast and listen to it in Podtastic, this is the release where it just works.
Quieter, more reliable downloads
A bunch of work went into the download path under the hood. The headline change you'll feel: when a podcast host starts rate-limiting (which they do during big release windows), Podtastic now backs off cleanly and resumes once the host calms down, instead of burning through retries.
You'll see fewer "download failed" toasts on busy mornings.
The smaller fixes
- A Mac-specific crash on the welcome flow has been fixed (it affected a small number of users running Podtastic via Mac Catalyst).
- Re-downloading an episode you'd previously deleted now clears the stale "deleted by user" sentinel cleanly, so the download proceeds without manual intervention.
- A handful of internal logging tags that were left on at launch have been cleaned up.
What's next
We're testing two onboarding flows in 4.2: a "freemium-first" path that lets new users explore the free tier before seeing Smart Features pricing, and a more traditional path. If you're a new user, you might see one or the other on your first run. The goal is to figure out which gets people into a habit faster.
Listen smarter with Podtastic
Want to try these improvements yourself? Podtastic is a fully featured podcast player for iOS and Android, built around Smart Features (the AI features) and Audio Enhancements (deterministic DSP tuned for spoken-word audio):

- Smart Topics — key topics surfaced across your favourite shows so you can jump straight to what matters
- Smart Skip — auto-skips commonly-skipped sections of an episode (intros, recaps, asides), powered by AI topic detection plus aggregated listening data; a single tap on any control surface jumps you to the next Smart Topic on demand
