What's new in Podtastic, July 18, 2026

This one's a big visual and interaction update. The maxi player got redrawn from the ground up on both platforms, a live transcript view now scrolls with the playhead, and every glyph in the app moved to a new icon set. Here's what shipped.

Redesigned maxi player

The now-playing screen was starting to feel crowded. Everything sat on a single page and the artwork's accent colour was doing nothing useful. So we rebuilt it.

The backdrop now takes its tone from the podcast artwork you're currently playing. Dark artwork gets a dark tint, bright artwork gets a bright tint, and the whole thing follows your device appearance so it never fights your OS. On iOS the transport controls sit on a glass scrubber that reads through the backdrop tint. On Android the now-playing screen resizes its artwork responsively so it fills the space cleanly on tall and short displays alike.

A handful of smaller polish items worth calling out:

Smart Summary dark-mode contrast uses an adaptive purple background now so summaries stay legible against any wallpaper
Toolbar glyph groups are inset from the edge so they don't hug the capsule
Empty-state glyphs render at a proper large size instead of shrinking to body text

Live transcript view

This is the headline. Tap the transcript tab from the maxi player and you get a live-scrolling transcript that follows the playhead in real time. Tap any line and playback jumps to that exact word.

Two modes:

View mode: read along, tap to jump, standard transcript behaviour
Report mode: a toggle at the top of the transcript switches you into review, where you can flag anything the app got wrong so we can fix it. Skipped rows are shown in the same visual treatment in both modes so it's always clear what got auto-jumped past

If you've ever wanted to see what a show is actually saying while you're listening, or catch a name, quote, or link that flew past, this is that. It's also a way to feed corrections back to us: your report clicks help improve how future episodes are handled for everyone.

Jump-to-Video for video podcasts

For shows that publish a video feed alongside the audio, there's now a Jump to Video pill on the player. Tap it and you're in the video version, same episode, same timestamp, no scrubbing.

The pill only appears where a video feed genuinely exists, so it doesn't pollute the interface for audio-only shows. The button label is lowercased ("jump to video") to match the app's overall voice, and the icon is a monitor rather than a microphone so it's obvious what tapping it does. If you follow video-first shows on the Vergecast, Waveform, or similar, this saves you the phone-to-YouTube dance.

A new icon set across the app (and the marketing site)

Every glyph in Podtastic moved to the Phosphor icon set this week. That's 216 call sites updated on iOS and roughly 100 on Android, plus a matching swap on the marketing site. Phosphor's ink weight and geometry match the app's typography better than the previous mix of platform-native symbols, and it gives us one consistent visual vocabulary across iOS, Android, and web.

There's also a new sync-playback glyph used by the transcript sync toggle above.

If you spot anything that looks weirdly sized or off, especially transport glyphs like play, pause, and skip, send us a screenshot. We did a full sweep but there are always corners.

Under the hood

A few things worth mentioning that don't have a screen but you'll notice indirectly:

The YouTube match pipeline no longer halts everything when it hits a single 404. Some playlists get retired without notice; we now log and skip rather than backing off from the whole batch
The marketing sitemap loads for Googlebot again, which matters for how easily new posts and shows surface in search
The health-check watchdog now catches background workers that are technically alive but throwing errors every cycle, so drift gets flagged fast
